Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of “hide and seek.”

Update the flooring. Tired, outdated carpeting or other flooring can use an overhaul. While solid hardwood flooring may be preferable, there are many types of laminate flooring that mimic the looks of popular wood colors and styles for a fraction of the cost. Plus, many are sold at home improvement retailers and even at warehouse clubs or online for reasonable prices. Laminate flooring also may be a potential DIY job for a skilled homeowner, saving even more money.

Stripe smut

The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Fresh produce: Farms big and small are bursting with produce come the fall. You can find the last vestiges of summer crops mingling with the first fruits of autumn. Grab the last of tomatoes and start thinking ahead to apples, squashes, lettuces, and grapes. You can even get an early start on pumpkin season - both for cooking and carving.

Stock the car with reusable tote bags and scour the farmer’s markets for seasonal finds. Chances are you also might pick up some extra treats, such as fresh honey or canned jams.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE

Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, youcanfindwaystodigdownand improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

DID YOU KNOW?

The number of people who smoke is on the decline, as a 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the percentage of adults in the United States who smoke cigarettes declined from roughly 21 percent in 2005 to 15.5 percent in 2016. That decline has no doubt helped reduce overall cancer death rates, though the figures regarding smoking-related deaths are still staggering. According to the CDC, smoking accounts for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The 2018 report from the CDC indicates that men (17.5 percent) are more likely than women (13.5 percent) to smoke cigarettes. In addition, the report notes a correlation between education and the likelihood of smoking cigarettes. While smoking was lowest among people who had graduate degrees, with only five out of every 100 such adults being smokers, smoking rates were highest (40.6 percent) among adults with graduate education degree certificates, or GEDs. While people who had no high school diploma were less likely to smoke cigarettes than GED recipients, the CDC report found that smoking rates declined the more education people received.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

How to Best Utilize Compression Stockings

DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please address how to use compression socks? I sit most of the day, so wearing the socks helps my legs to feel less heavy and tired by the end of the day. Are there people who should not wear them? And what about wearing them during exercise?

ANSWER: Compression stockings are most commonly used in people with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in middle-aged to older people. The major symptom is swelling in the feet and lower legs. The swelling is usually minimal or gone in the morning and gets worse during the day, especially with prolonged standing and even sitting.

The underlying problem is that the veins, which carry blood from the legs back to the heart, get leaky over decades, and the fluid accumulates in the legs under the force of gravity. Your doctor can prescribe the right size, length and strength of stocking based on your personal condition. The fact that you feel better with compression stockings suggests that you might have venous insufficiency, but it’s still a good idea to ask your doctor about them. Compression stockings are pretty safe, but should not be worn by people with serious reduction in arterial blood flow to the legs.

Arterial disease is completely different from venous insufficiency. It’s caused by blockages in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the legs. An expert, such as a vascular surgeon, is an appropriate consultant for a person with arterial insufficiency before they consider using compression stockings.

Unless you have moderate to severe arterial disease (in which case you should check with your doctor if you aren’t sure), there is no harm from wearing compression stockings during exercise. There may even be some benefit. Compression stockings should not be worn by those with an acute clot in a major leg vein (a deep venous thrombosis). Once the clot is stabilized for a few days with medication, compression stockings can help treat and even prevent swelling in the affected leg.

People with moderate to severe heart failure should exercise care before using compression stockings, which put the leaked-out fluid back into the circulation and can worsen heart failure. Again, this is an issue to discuss with your regular doctor or cardiologist prior to using compression stockings on your own.

Finally, severe venous insufficiency can cause breakdown in the skin. A person with ulcers or open wounds, or with any kind of acute infection, should be evaluated and treated prior to using compression stockings. A wound care nurse is an ideal consultant in this case.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

Q&A Master Gardeners

Preserving Native Bulbs

with the

New times bring new technological devices, new generations, new lifestyles, and gardening is not the exception. We crave the new and differentandthereforebetter.Really?

This recalls many gardeners attracted to the new hybrids: the latest color, size, and number of blooms in different vegetables, flowers, and fruits.

Personally, I admire the heirlooms, those plants that were grown in our gardens for centuries, loved and appreciated, and passed down through the generations. So, here it

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

is, late September, the time to plant those charming, trouble-free, longlasting, and self-proliferating spring bulbs. Many of them have been with usforaverylongtime, suchas:

•OrnithogalumUmbellatum, known toallastheStarofBethlehem, iseasy to grow, and sometimes strays, in gardenssince1593!

•Scillasiberica,orSiberiansquill,as its name implies, survives a negative 40 degrees Farenheight and carpets dapple shade in a flush of blue in AprilthroughMay.

• Another blue charmer, Chionodoxa, known as Glory of the Snow, arrived 100 years later in 1788.

• Muscari or grape hyacinths showeduparoundthesametime.

• Mount Hood daffodil, 16-18 inches high, blooms pale-yellow andfadestoivory.

Enjoy these old-timers and keep historyalive!

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest when the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely won’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allowing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

Here’s a tip

* Cellphones get dirty, especially touch-screen phones. Be sure to wipe the surface of your phone daily during cold and flu season. Use an approved antiseptic wipe for electronics.

* I have found myself with an abundance of peppers from my garden, so I cleaned and chopped them, then froze them. I am able to take out what I need, and they won’t spoil. -- C.E. in Florida

* To keep windshield wipers clean between replacement periods, dampen a so cloth with rubbing alcohol and wipe the length of the blade.

Before the pumpkin spiced latte took over, the American fall was marked by hot ciders and other spicy beverages.

Hot Mulled Cider

1600s The European Colonization

Europeans spread through the continent and propagate apple farming and cider, which is the most common beverage of the period

Nothing speaks comfort like fall, and nothing speaks fall like wrapping our hands around a warm beverage. As the temperature drops and days become shorter, lay cozily on the couch, turn on the T.V., and let the powerful scent of apple, nutmeg, and cinnamon fill your home — it’s time to celebrate National Hot Mulled Cider Day. While most are acquainted with mulled ciders, on September 30 we bump it up a notch and mull it with spices, cinnamon, cloves, orange peels, and nutmeg to celebrate the arrival of fall.

Since it’s smelling like fall it needs to look like fall!

As the cider brews in the kitchen, replace the summer décor with fall pumpkins, gourds and fall scented candles.

Thank you to my “garbage plate” angel

I am a female senior citizen with poor hand movement due to arthritis. My foolish self thought I could handle carrying my huge garbage plate takeout container from the restaurant to my car. However I was not able to park in a handicapped spot and so on the way to my further away space, I dropped the whole container! Luckily not much fell out and a very kind gentleman was in the parking lot to help me pick it up. He also noted that my plate hadn’t come with diced raw onion. “That’s integral to a plate,” he said. So true! Luckily he had some diced onion leftover from his plate he donated to mine. I deeply enjoyed this meal. Thanks to that parking lot angel and I will pay it forward!

Stopped Traffic!

Thank you to everyone who stopped their cars on Veteran’s Memorial and to everyone who helped me catch my dog after he slipped his harness! I cannot express how relieved I am that he is safe and sound, and the recipient of a new, better fitting harness!

Inconsiderate dog owners

Please, dog owners (not all by any means, but many of you), leash your dogs! Just because you love your dog like a child doesn’t mean that I do. We are fortunate enough to have many terrific walking and hiking trails in the area. Nothing ruins a morning jog or an evening stroll like an untrained dog barreling towards you as the owner says “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Guess what? I don’t care! It is about time for legal enforcement of the signs stating the fines for unleashed dogs!

Local elections

Am I the only one who’s already sick of the commercials, flyers, and in person discussions of anyone who spends more time attacking their opponents and less time saying what they will do for us?

Overuse of perfume/cologne

Attention aids, nurses, people in the medical field, home health aids or visitors to the hospitals, senior apartments or nursing homes. Overuse of perfume/ cologne that lingers in the hallways makes many elderly people ill. Please consider the necessity of having to wear it in these places. It affects people with asthma, COPD, and many other illnesses. Respect their living space. It would be so much appreciated.

The Iron Fireman of Honeoye Falls: A Storied Past of Good-Natured Thievery

When you travel through Honeoye Falls, chances are you take in the falls themselves or check out the small shops around the four corners, but don’t even notice the Iron Man standing tall atop East Street’s Village Hall. e five-foot-tall iron figure of yesteryear’s fireman dons a helmet, red shirt, blue pants, and holds a fireman’s horn, a popular sounding signal. Even locals pass the figure without notice, but it has quite an amusing storied past, interconnecting area fire departments.

Originally property of the fire department in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada, the Iron Man was a symbol typically carried in fireman’s parades and at conventions. Since it was such a key symbol, fire departments tried to “steal” the Iron Man for possession until the following year’s convention.

At one point, a fire company in Rochester, NY gained possession of the Iron Man, and rumor has it that Albion may also have had it. Later, by agreement or otherwise, the figure came to Avon. Firemen there decided to reinforce the figure and place it on display atop their fire hall. e Honeoye Falls firemen looked with covetous eyes at this cherished trophy and decided to act.

According to the Honeoye Falls Fire Department, the following is first-hand information gathered in 1963 from three firemen who took part in the escapade: Capt. Charles B. Pierce, Harry Pilsbury, and William Desmann. e raiders planned their attack, gathering ropes, saws, files, and other tools, then boarded a carriage and wagon for a cold night’s ride to Avon. A last-minute addition to their equipment was a ladder borrowed from their own fire department headquarters.

Finding the Avon firehouse deserted, the three men set to work. Almost all of their plan succeeded and two men reached the roof when the alarm went out. e Honeoye Falls men got away but without their ladder. e following morning as little as possible was said about the attempted robbery, and it was assumed the failed plot would be abandoned.

However, minds were sharp and the HoneoyeFallsvolunteers were determined. e following night, October 29, 1891, the HF raiders made another trip to Avon, while Avon firefighters were supposed to be in the Livingston House celebrating a birthday party, leaving the firehouse guard down.

Between 1:30 and 2:00am, the HF men crept stealthily along the Avon fire property and set up their equipment. ey stationed guards at strategic spots facing Main Street to warn of passersby. Others working from the ground handed up climbing rigs and tools for those reaching the roo op. Still other men stood in the dark alley holding strings attached to the climbers’ elbows to signal warning if the enemy approached. ose reaching the Iron Man carried saws to remove him from his perch.

e upright bar holding the Iron Man was inches thick cast steel, very difficult to saw. With each slight pull of the cord attached to their arms, work halted. Twice the signal was given, once when two railroad workers stopped on Main Street to bid each other good night, and again when a guest from a nearby hotel opened a window to gaze out into the cold night air. Apparently, no one noticed anything unusual going on in their quiet, peaceful little town.

When sawing was complete, the cutting men forgot to rope the steel figure, and the Iron Man went rattling down the roof side and crashed with a deafening thud in the alley below.

e Honeoye Falls Marauders quickly gathered their tools and the Iron Man, rushed to their wagon and carriage, and le Avon before the community knew of its loss.

At dawn in Honeoye Falls, the crusaders, gloating over the success, woke the villagers as they drove into the village. A er chaining the Iron Man to a counter at Pride’s Hardware store and assigning two guards, theyassembledatthebarintheWilcoxHousetoacceptcongratulations.

Shortly, the local gunsmith, Mike Tucker, reconstructed the body of the Iron Man to withstand the weather of both winter snows and summer rains and to attach a rod of Swedish steel through its center. Inspired by Avon’s site selection, the Honeoye Falls firemen erected the reconstructed Iron Man to its high post on the Village Hall spire in Fall 1891.

Several fire companies, such as Rush, Lima, Geneseo, and West Bloomfield, have tried to remove the Iron Man over the years, but without success. He remains there today as tribute to the daring and fortitude of those who captured it and as tributetothethousands of volunteer fireman of the nation who give tirelessly to protect life and property from fire.

is why the Iron Man is the official emblem of the Honeoye Falls Fire Department and why all HF apparatus include the words “Home of the Iron Fireman.” If you happen upon Honeoye Falls’ intrepid firefighters or attend the Fireman’s Parade in June, see if you can spot the figure and its references around town.

ANSWERS TO COMMON PET FOSTERING QUESTIONS

What are common expectations? A foster program will explain their specific expectations. These may include training the pets to void outdoors or in a litter box. Foster parents may be expected to teach a dog to rest in his crate or basic commands.

Cats are coveted for a variety of reasons, including their regal countenance and graceful movements. Many people are surprised to learn that cats boast several characteristics that make them wonderful pets.

PAW’S CORNER

Cats get allergies too!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Tushy, sneezes several times a day, and her eyes water almost nonstop. is has been happening for a couple of weeks. She didn’t seem to have this issue before. My local veterinarian’s office is booked up for another two months, so I’m not sure what I can do in the meantime. Can you help? -- Harriet G., Roanoke, Virginia

DEAR HARRIET: It sounds like your cat is suffering from an allergy to something in her environment. at could be airborne irritants like pollen, dust or molds. Or, it could be a reaction to something in her food.

You can try to figure out what’s causing her reaction in a couple of ways. First, dust and clean your home thoroughly, and consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the room that Tushy spends the most time in.

Next, try a different brand of pet food for a couple of weeks to see if that makes any difference. Some cats are sensitive to certain ingredients in pet foods, and because those ingredients vary from brand to brand, it’s difficult to figure out which one is causing the allergy.

When Tushy is able to see the veterinarian, bring along your notes about her symptoms and what effect, if any, the environmental and dietary changes above had on improving her condition. e vet can offer additional treatment and support, such as adding essential fatty acids to her diet or prescribing a steroid to help with her symptoms.

In the meantime, monitor Tushy’s symptoms closely. If they suddenly get much worse, or if she becomes lethargic, vomits frequently or shows other signs of serious illness, take her to an emergency vet immediately.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW

Be brief yet effective

A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB

Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
