THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE Economics: The effects of climate change on crops and livestock may force farmers to change the nature of their farms. The UCS notes that farmers may be forced to choose crop varieties and animal breeds that are suited to the new conditions sparked by climate change. Going in a new direction could force farmers to make potentially costly investments in machinery and other changes as they make the transition.

Put paint to work. Paint is another way to make the most of a limited space. Painting certain pieces of furniture the same color as the wall can make the furniture blend in and feel less imposing. The result is a room that feels calm and open, even if there is less space to move around than homeowners might have grown accustomed to in their larger homes. •

Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE

For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families.

Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Brown patches: The National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that brown patches in a lawn often develop after heavy snowfall. Such patches tend to develop where large piles of shoveled snow were deposited, so homeowners can inspect alongside driveways and walkways. The NALP advises homeowners to rake away part of the brown patches first. If green tissue is emerging beneath, then the lawn will likely be fine in due time. However, if the area beneath is not green and surrounding areas are already turning green, homeowners may need to rake up dead tissue before applying topsoil to the affected spots. Once topsoil is spread, some grass seed can be spread and the grass should regain its green glory. Leftover

Make the most of mulching

Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed.

First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE AN APPRAISER’S VISIT

Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Get necessary permits: Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project. A permit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan.

If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape.

Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

EXPLAINING PRECISION AGRICULTURE

What are some examples of PA technology? Sensors are a prime example of PA technology that helps make farms more efficient and productive. Sensors serve various functions by helping farmers gather data on the availability of water in soil, the level of compaction in soil, leaf temperature, insect and disease infestation, and other areas.

Weather modeling is another component of PA that can help farms be more costeffective and efficient. Whereas in years past many farms would need to manually assess certain variables to determine when to harvest, weather modeling technology has enabled some farmers to generate remote readings, saving time and money.

VENT BRIGHTER

Thank you to those who sat with my grandfather!

Last weekend our beloved Popop had a fall outside Lift Bridge Bookstore. Our family wants to thank Joey from Lift Bridge and the Girl Scout who sat with him to wait for an ambulance. We are grateful to you and the bookstore itself who gave us a phone call! He is doing great!

Door slamming neighbors, please be mindful!

Starting at 7am or earlier, my neighbors slam their car doors repeatedly. I don’t even understand how or why this is necessary! If you are making loud noises during the village quiet hours, be mindful that others might work late shifts, have babies, or just wanna sleep!

Corporate America! WAKE UP!

Kindness Can Come to a Person When Least Expected

My wife and I are senior citizens and at 6:30pm I realized I had forgotten to go to the store to get breakfast items for the next morning. I grabbed my car keys and told my wife that I’d be back in a “jiffy.” I got to the store in 5 minutes, parked near the entrance and ran inside, gathering my few items in a “jiff.” However, there were only two checkouts with a cashier. Both of them had customers with loaded carts that they were about to unload. Also, all the self checkouts were all taken with people in line. As I got behind a woman who was about to unload all her items onto the conveyor belt, she saw me and allowed me to go ahead of her. Then as I was about to pay, the cashier said the woman behind me would pay. I thanked the lady, but declined. At home I told my wife what occurred. She stated it was probably because the lady saw me with shirt worn inside out and wrinkled with my hair sticking up.

I am tired of robot telephone servers who can rarely help me with a problem. I am tired of too few workers doing too much work and thus not readily available to assist me, whether on the phone or in person. I am tired of being placed on hold for too long. I am tired of being pressured to go paperless when in fact the paper remains at my expense. I am tired of being pressured to go cashless with everything when I am not confident that my accounts will not be compromised. People need to work! Hire enough staff to serve your customers! Stop trying to get the most profit at the expense of customers and staff! Customers will be happy, your people will be happy, your business will thrive, and perhaps America will be the nation she once was and no longer beholden to foreign nations, especially China. God will bless us once again if and when we return to being just and ethical in the workplace.

Here’s a Tip

• “My roses really look beautiful. When I am cutting stems to put in a bouquet, I use a clothespin to grip the stem. It saves me from getting pricked by thorns, because it has a bit of reach to it.” -- L.E. in Georgia

• For even distribution in sowing seeds for your garden, use a saltshaker for tiny seeds. You can get a cheese shaker for larger seeds, if necessary.

• To keep your brick walkway clear of grass and weeds, sprinkle salt in the cracks.

• “If you have to cut a nylon cord or shoelace, you can use a flame to melt the end into a nub that won’t run or fray. Use a little heat and press it together on a hard surface very briefly. It works fast!” -- R.S. in Maine

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS

Study what you want to capture. The best photographers do their research. If you want to grab a great photo of an egret by the water’s edge, spend time watching these birds in their habitat and learning their behaviors. This might help you predict when to snap the best photo.

YARD SALE TIPS

Be reasonable when pricing items. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Pricing items at one-third of their initial cost is a good starting point. This leaves room for negotiation.

Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Vocal Cord Becomes Paralyzed After a Cold

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter, 45, has had a paralyzed left vocal cord for about a year now. We have been to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor who ran at least a half dozen tests, including several scans. These didn’t show a reason for the problem, and everything else appeared to be normal. She had a cold before this happened, and we were treating her for a lingering sore throat.

The doctor has told us that there is nothing to be done to unfreeze the vocal cord. I would love your opinion on this matter, as she has a lot of pain associated with it, and she coughs trying to get out what feels stuck in there. -- K.P.

ANSWER: Paralysis of the vocal cord is often the result of damage to the nerve that leads to the vocal cord; there’s one on each side. The left side is particularly vulnerable and may be damaged during surgery (especially thyroid surgery), but a big fear is that a mass (especially a cancerous one) can damage the nerve and cause paralysis of the vocal cord. This is why her doctor did a CT scan.

There are other less-common causes, such as nerve damage from other occurrences (stroke and multiple sclerosis); inflammatory diseases (lupus and others); and infections (such as Lyme disease). It sounds like the ENT doctor looked for other possibilities such as these. (But if not, then it should be done.)

When a cause can’t be found, we call it “idiopathic unilateral vocal cord paralysis.” This often seems to happen after a viral infection, and it sounds like your daughter might have had one. Many people with this condition get better by themselves during the first year, but now that it has been about a year for her, she isn’t likely to get better without treatment.

I am not an expert in treatment, but ENT surgeons have several types of surgical interventions to improve hoarseness, cough and discomfort. It’s time to go back to her ENT doctor or get referred to an expert in the surgical treatment of this condition.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

PAW’S CORNER

When tick removal goes wrong

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A er taking my Terrier “Hank” for a walk around my subdivision yesterday, I noticed when taking off his leash that a tick had attached itself to the back of his neck! I don’t even know where it came from; we stayed on the sidewalk. I quickly tried to remove it with tweezers, but Hank is kind of a wiggly guy, and just as I tugged on the tick, he moved and the body of the tick broke off! It looks like the tick’s head is still embedded in his skin. What can I do? Will this hurt Hank?

York

DEAR JOE: Since the tick’s body was removed, and you noticed it pretty quickly, Hank’s risk of contracting a tick-borne illness is low. However, an infection might develop where the tick’s head is still embedded. Treat the bite spot with an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment. Monitor the spot for a few days. ere may be a little redness around the bite area as the skin reacts to the foreign object, and with luck, the head may be pushed out enough for you to grab it with the tweezers and remove.

When should you contact Hank’s veterinarian? If you aren’t able to remove the tick head a er a few days, it’s time to make an appointment with the vet. Or, if the redness spreads or if Hank seems distressed, lethargic or otherwise out of sorts, get him to the vet right away.

Removing a tick as soon as it’s found is important, because even though dogs can be vaccinated against Lyme Disease, other tick-borne diseases can be transmitted to your pet. Ticks are becoming active earlier in the year, so consider starting flea and tick prevention earlier, too.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

National PLAYGROUND SAFETY WEEK

April 22–25, 2024

Playgrounds in Germany were built for childhood development, but the first purpose-built recreational area open to the public was in Manchester, England in 1859. Thus, designated play areas were built to protect kids from the dangers of the road and into securedareasinstead.

Ellen Foos Returns to Webster, Crafting Verse with Wit and Wisdom

As founder and publisher of Ragged Sky Press, the words of Webster’s Ellen Foos weave through the tapestry of life with grace and insight and she has carved a niche for herself in the literary world, leaving an indelible mark with her evocative verses. Working for Ecco, Graywolf, and Princeton University Press, she has been surrounded by literature.

Foos’ foray into poetry began as a renaissance, a resurgence ignited during her pursuit of a BA a er a 25-year hiatus. “I started writing poetry in earnest pretty late in life,” she says, explaining that she only began as part of a writing class required to finish the abandoned degree. Her debut collection, “Little Knitted Sister,” published in 2006, marked the inception of a literary odyssey that continues to unfold.

Reflecting on her poetic genesis, Foos fondly recalls her favorite poetry teacher, a collegiate reminiscence colored by the backdrop of Phoebe Snow’s “ e Poetry Man.” Amidst the pages of the NortonPoetryAnthology at the time, she found inspiration for her poetic expedition.

Foos finds inspiration in the tapestry of existence, navigating the realms of childhood nostalgia, familial bonds, and the panorama of the natural world. She says, “I try to add a little wry humor or biting wit if I can,” evoking both levity and introspection. Foos eschews formal style to write short lyric poetry, brevity capturing the essence of fleeting moments.

Foos’ writing habits reflect a sense of ritualistic devotion, with mornings serving as her most creative time. Evolving from the constraints of professional life when she’d write creatively during breaks, now in retirement, she immerses herself in workshops, leveraging the camaraderie of fellow wordsmiths to stoke the fires of motivation. With a process involving editing as she goes, Foos sometimes worries that she’s condensed her ideas too much, confessing the perennial struggle of every artist in pursuit of perfection.

Foos finds solace and inspiration in the literary community, mostnotablyinvolvedwiththeweeklyUS1Writer’sCooperative, the annual is Broken Shore journal, monthly reading series, as well as residencies at MacDowell and the Vermont Studio Center. Such networks serve as crucibles of creativity and camaraderie.

Coordinating events and reading series, publishing Ragged Sky Press, and organizing Ragged Sky Press poets for the annual NYC Poetry Festival reflect Foos’ commitment to fostering literary culture and community.

To Foos, poetry transcends artistic expression, instead serving as a transformative force in everyday life. She says, “Children are very lucky if their parents read to them, especially poetry. When given a chance in school to write poetry, it opens

up real channels of comfort and creativity. Adults who read poetry are better listeners and observers in other aspects of their lives.”

To developing poets, Foos offers sage advice: “Don’t be shy! Don’t be intimidated by the great poets. ere will be nuggets of wisdom once you get started and those are what you will enjoy developing.”

As Foos embarks on a new chapter back in Western NY, her website, raggedsky.com, serves as a beacon for enthusiasts eager to immerse themselves in her poetic tapestry. She weaves threads of experience into the fabric of human consciousness. With each stanza, she invites us to embrace shared humanity.

Packet Drawer

I love people who organize with clarity, light bulbs in one place, batteries in another, things that keep forever, that never spoil but sometimes become obsolete.

Ann Page cinnamon in a tin box never ages, while my skin looks progressively different in the bright sun, like a mold-infested leaf.

I think of things I have stored away, buttons I will never sew back on, panties never to be flashed before a lover. Still, I might use pouches of mustard, mayo and ketchup. Saving for a rainy day, bringing home party le overs, hoarding what must only bring tears to loved ones in the days a er you die.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY

Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40.

People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.
