Printing We’re very excited to announce our long-term investment in new printing equipment that will arrive in February. DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution.

For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.

We were able to distribute over 6,400 toys to approximately 1,900 children through our participating partners due to your generosity. Many of these children would not have been able to enjoy a Merry Christmas without your help. All toys that were collected in Ontario and Livingston Counties were distributed within those counties through the various participating agencies. We are very grateful for their help.

Seasonal [Local Bridge] is BS Why is the [local bridge] closed in the Summer? It makes it pretty tough to ride a bike between [local town] and [local town]! Also, why didn’t they make the thing 20 feet higher than it is? Seems like they could have done a lot better job with that bridge than they did!

Would it really be so tough to change the schedule to let people get across in September, October, and April?

We need authority to step up I work at a store in my local town and in my dept. we had a bullying situation.

This person tried to ignore the individuals who would harass them, made rude comments or just blatantly gave dirty looks just to get them going. It was horrible to see them stressed or in tears because of this unnecessary drama.

This person went to the two different managers to tell them what was going on. Their response was “Just ignore it” or “I’m not a HS Principal, just figure out a way to deal with it.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When we first start we have to watch videos on harassment and bullying and afterwards we need to sign a paper stating that we watched it.

The video clearly states that if you are experiencing uncomfortable situations like this, the person to go to was your manager. And they have the audacity to tell them to just ignore it? Do your job as a manager and help protect the employees you’re supposed to oversee and help keep protected from situations like this!

Effie May Cottrell Marble: A Legacy of Service, Love, and Community

Effie also served as the first chairman for the Bristol Home Bureau unit. Her bimonthly Family Life Letter in the newsletter the County Extension Services sent to Home Bureau members was famously quoted by State and USDA Extension services.

According to a 1948 Farm Journal article about Effie, shee was touted as “Farm Neighbor” everyone looked to as the “chipper little whitehaired woman” who’s the ‘spark plug’ of Bristol Valley on Baptist Hill.” So young in spirit, she connected with young and old in the community. In her Family Life Letters, Effie shared wisdom such as: “Love, sympathy, patience are a little like vitamins. They work best when you use them every day.”

ffie May Cottrell Marble, born in 1879 and laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Bristol, NY in 1979, led a remarkable life that left an enduring legacy in her community. A glimpse into her life unfolds through various newspaper articles and notes, offering a testament to her dedication to family, community, and public service.

According to a reporter in The Daily Messenger in 1954, “Romance began early for the Marbles, who were born in the same town, West Bloomfield, and attended the same class in the three-room village school. Affairs at the West Bloomfield Congregational Church where they worshipped made it possible for many meetings.”

On March 21, 1900, daughter of Henry and Mary Plimpton Cottrell, Effie Cottrell married Harry R. Marble in a ceremony at her parents’ home in West Bloomfield. The young couple started their life together on the farm owned by Harry’s father in West Bloomfield before purchasing the farm of Harry’s grandfather in Bristol three years later. According to the Lake Shore News in Feb 1948, illness necessitated the Marbles’ 1920 move to the Village of Baptist Hill, where they acquired the home and general store of the late Addison B. Parmele. The couple operated the store for almost three decades until 1949.

Effie and Harry Marble were actively involved in civic affairs and local politics. Over 35 years, Harry served as an assessor, supervisor, and NY State Assemblyman in the Town of Bristol. Effie, too, played a significant role in community service. She organized juvenile grange units in Canandaigua, Oaks Corners, Victor, East Bloomfield, Bristol Valley, Bristol Springs, Naples, Honeoye, and Seneca grade at Stanley, serving as the county juvenile deputy.

Her commitment extended to the political arena, where she was a loyal supporter of the Republican party. Both Effie and Harry found time to contribute to the Universalist Church of the Bristol Valley, demonstrating their deep-rooted connection to their faith and community.

“If you show someone how to bake bread and the bread fails, nothing of too great value is lost. But when you speak a word or express an idea it exists for good or ill.”

Effie Marble’s dedication to preserving local history is evident in her role in chartering the Bristol Historical Society. Her efforts, recorded in 1953, laid the foundation for a society that focused on local history through presentations, open to both the public and members. This initiative showcased her commitment to the community’s cultural and historical richness.

Despite their active public lives, the Marbles were deeply committed to family. They cared for their grandchildren, Jack and Joan Terry, after the passing of their daughter, Ethel Marble Terry. The tragedy of losing another daughter, Dorothy, in a car accident a few years earlier, added a layer of personal grief to their lives.

Effie Marble’s enduring legacy is evident in the establishment of the Bristol Library, which, for years, found its home on the second floor of the Marble store. Her impact reached beyond her lifetime, with the Honeoye Falls Times of 1970 recognizing her instrumental role in the library’s establishment. The sentiments expressed in the Farm Journal article capture the essence of Effie’s spirit—forever young and active, endearing her to the Bristol Hill community.

Every one of the sources I scoured said that even as Effie spent countless hours in her various roles managing her home, extensive church and grange work, community meetings, Red Cross activities, and helping in the store, Effie “always found time to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors,” which may explain why she had left such an indelible mark on the community.

Effie May Cottrell Marble’s life reflects a profound commitment to family, community, and preserving local history. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched and in the institutions she helped establish, leaving an indelible mark on the Bristol community.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Please explain Hashimoto’s disease. I have heard that it is rare, but two colleagues have recently been diagnosed. We all work in a very high-stress field. -- J.H. ANSWER: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not at all a rare disease. It occurs in up to 10% of the population and much more frequently in women than men.

Although people can be diagnosed at a young age, it is more common at older ages. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction to different parts of the thyroid, with thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies commonly found. TSH receptor antibodies are found on occasion.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis most commonly causes low thyroid levels, although there may be a period of time early in the disease where thyroid levels are high. Not everybody with antibodies will develop low thyroid levels. The thyroid is sometimes enlarged, but a careful exam will usually show that the gland is firm, showing that immune cells have infiltrated the gland.

Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the gland can no longer make. The dose depends on body size to a certain extent, but needs to be adjusted based on lab results.

Most people are treated with levothyroxine, also called T4, which is the primary hormone made by the thyroid.

T4 is converted to T3 (also called triiodothyronine, the active form of the hormone) in various tissues outside the thyroid. T3 only stays in the body for a short while before it is destroyed, so a once-daily treatment with T4, which lasts longer, allows the body to convert T4 to T3.

Most people do very well with T4 treatment. A minority of people cannot efficiently make the active T3 form, in which case-combination treatment can be considered.

Unfortunately, T3 must be dosed twice daily.

It is thought that stress hormones play a role, since stress does seem to increase the risk of developing an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s.

Does Pet Insurance Extend to Pet Sitters?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I left my dog Shep in the care of a pet sitter for a week while I was away on business. The sitter texted me that Shep cut his paw during a walk in the nearby woods, and they took him to my veterinarian for care. Shep is doing fine now. I have pet insurance, but I don’t think it’s my responsibility to pay for this. The injury occurred while the sitter was walking him. The sitter says that injury and illness are my responsibility to cover. Who should pay? -- Bill in Chicago

DEAR BILL: Did the sitter give any details of how Shep was injured?

The circumstances are important. For example, if Shep was on-leash and stepped on an unexpected piece of debris in the path, that’s different than if Shep was let off-leash and was running free in the woods. But, if you normally let him off-leash in the woods and instructed the sitter that it was OK to do that, then that’s another consideration.

Talk more with the sitter to get more details. In the meantime, pay the vet and submit the reimbursement claim to the pet insurance company.

Professional sitters routinely include a statement in their contract with clients that any illness or injury is the responsibility of the client. This protects them from financial loss if something does happen. However, if they are accused of deliberately neglecting or abusing a pet in their care, that statement won’t protect them.

HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS DINNER Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships.

Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues.

Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu.

Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake.

Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant.

Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage.

Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first.

Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies.

Serves 6 generously 2 pounds beef shoulder, cut into 2-inch pieces (see note) 1 onion, cut into large dice 2 carrots, cut into large dice 2 stalks celery, cut into large dice 2 dried bay leaves 4 sprigs fresh thyme 7 sprigs fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns 1 bottle red wine Salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/4 pound slab bacon, cut into large dice 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups beef stock 2 large Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice 1. Put the beef chunks in a large bowl and add the onion, carrots and celery. In a piece of cheesecloth, tie together a bouquet of garni of the bay leaves, thyme, parsley, and peppercorns and add to the bowl. Pour in the bottle of wine. Cover and let marinate in the refrigerator overnight, stirring the mixture once or twice over the course of the evening.

2. The next day, remove the meat from the marinade and dry the pieces in a shallow pan lined with several layers of paper towels. Remove the vegetables and reserve them separately, along with the bouquet garni. Reserve the wine. Season the beef with salt and pepper.

3. In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the canola oil. Add the bacon and cook until browned and the fat is rendered, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pot and set aside. In single-layer batches, brown the beef chunks on all sides, then set aside. Brown the reserved onions, carrots and celery, about 10 minutes. Add additional canola oil to the pot if there is not enough bacon fat to brown all of the beef and vegetables.

4. Return the beef to the pot with the vegetables and add 3 tablespoons of the butter. Sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring, for about 3 minutes. Add the reserved wine and deglaze the pot, scraping up all the browned bits from the bottom. Add the bacon and stock and bring to a boil. Skim off the scum that rises to the top; once the scum is removed, add the bouquet garni. Simmer, covered, over medium-low heat until the beef is very tender, about 11/2 hours. Remove the bouquet garni.

5. Toward the end of the beef’s cooking time, bring the potatoes to a boil in a separate saucepan covered generously with salted water. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes.

6. In a medium sauté pan, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium-high heat. Add the pearl onions and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the onions and cook until both onions and mushrooms are golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

7. Serve the stew in bowls, garnished with the pearl onions, mushrooms and potatoes.

Note: When shopping for beef, you won’t find a cut labeled “beef shoulder” - what you want is either a chuck roast of some sort or, from a bit lower on the shoulder, a cut labeled either “arm roast” or “round bone roast.”
