The popularity of outdoor living spaces has been growing for years. A 2014 study from the home remodeling and design platform Houzz found that 56 percent of homeowners were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. Similarly, nearly 60 percent of architectural practices surveyed by the American Institute of Architects in 2016 said outdoor living spaces were popular features in the homes they built.
Outdoor living spaces may also be sound investments for homeowners looking to improve the resale value of their properties. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2017 “Cost vs. Value” report, outdoor living spaces returned between 55 and 71 percent of homeowners’ initial investments at resale.
When planning an outdoor living space, homeowners with ample backyards have much to work with. However, to make the most of the space while simultaneously hoping to get as strong a return on their investments as possible, homeowners should look to create spaces that offer broad appeal and are not too personalized.

Nothing beats the flavor of fresh-picked fruits and vegetables, but growing your own food benefits more than just your taste buds! Here are a few more great reasons to start a vegetable garden of your own or a community garden:
• Eating just-picked ripened vegetables from your garden lets you enjoy peak nutritional value over food that has been harvested, shipped and distributed to a grocery store.
• Gardening promotes functional fitness through movement. It also treats your body to fresh air and Vitamin D from the sunlight.
• Growing your own food reduces use of fossil fuels traditionally needed to transport produce from farms to grocers.
Getting started is as easy as picking an area that receives at least six hours of daylight exposure, whether it’s a plot of earth or a raised planter box. Find out what grows well in your area by talking to neighbors or vendors at your local farmers’ market, then start small with something you really enjoy eating!
• Plant gardens in raised beds. Raised beds can eliminate some garden infiltration by small critters that come up and under from the ground, such as rabbits, gophers, groundhogs, slugs, and some other crawling pests.
• Prepare homemade insecticide. The environmental information site Treehugger provides information on making a homemade insecticide from vegetable oil and a mild soap. Use one cup of oil with one tablespoon of soap (such as Dr Bronner’s castile soap). Add this mixture to one quart of water in a spray bottle. This concoction can eradicate aphids, mites, thrips, and more by coating insects’ bodies and effectively suffocating them. Soap-and-water sprays or even neem oil sprays work similarly.
• Sprinkle diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth, commonly known as DE, is an abrasive powder comprised of fossilized algae diatoms. It’s commonly used as a filter medium in swimming pools, but also makes an effective pesticide. The material’s abrasive and absorbent qualities draw moisture out of insects, essentially dehydrating them to death. DE can be sprinkled around the base of plants, but will need to be reapplied a er rain and watering.
• Space out plants. Tightly planted crops create a breeding ground for fungal diseases and also provide hiding spots and warmth for pests. Leaving room between plants can help avoid these issues, according to Gardening Channel.
• Use row covers or garden mesh. Many plants can be covered all year long as long as the covers are li ed during flowering if the crops depend on pollination by bees. Veggiemesh® is a cover that can be laid over plants.
• Interplant crops in the garden. Interplanting is a technique that involves alternating crops, herbs and flowers to confuse the pests so they have a difficult time finding what they want to eat. Alternate rows of vegetables with herbs and flowers that appeal to beneficial insects.
When did we own a pickup truck? Recently, we placed old material and debris curbside for our municipal “Clean Up Day”. Upon the next day, we discovered four (4) pickup truck tires added curbside. We do not own a truck! Ugh!
The May 23rd article about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Highland Park was excellent. Thank you for sharing it with your readers. I hope it inspires those who have never been there to visit it. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve in our military, especially those who paid the ultimate price with their lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our local towns for their meaningful and moving Memorial Day tributes. Your efforts to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country remind us all of the true significance of this day.
It seems [local town] gas stations now have the highest price per gallon than any surrounding town. I just drove around [local town], [local town], [local town] and they all have lower prices. How is this possible? I can’t possibly figure it out, what a conundrum... I wonder what NYS would have to say about this?

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS
Study what you want to capture. The best photographers do their research. If you want to grab a great photo of an egret by the water’s edge, spend time watching these birds in their habitat and learning their behaviors. This might help you predict when to snap the best photo.

The US Social Security system formally began as we know it in 1935, with precursing Civil War and company pensions to take care of aging and disabled employees. With an aging population and fewer people working to pay into the system, polls show people overwhelmingly oppose cutting SS benefits. What should be done to solve the looming crisis as funds to pay these benefits diminish?
- Raise tax rates to cover benefits
- Raise the retirement age - Reduce benefits paid out
- Reconsider the whole system

Are screening centers worth the money?
Q. A.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I see screening tests advertised often. For $160, I can get screened for conditions that might cause strokes, heart disease, aneurysms, etc. My partner and I are in our early and mid60s. Should we get these done? -- K.S.
ANSWER: Sometimes screening tests make a great deal of sense; other times they don’t. It all depends on how likely it is that a person would have the condition in question. For example, screening for an aneurysm of the aorta has been proven to save lives in men between 65-75 with any history of smoking. It can also be considered in other people, especially if there is a family history of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
On the other hand, many stand-alone screening centers offer ultrasound evaluations of the carotid arteries in the neck, but expert groups such as the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommend against it in people without symptoms. They have concluded that screening for blockages of the carotid arteries in people without symptoms is more likely to result in harm than benefit. The main harm comes from false-positive ultrasounds, which must often be confirmed by an angiogram.About 1% of people get a stroke during an angiogram, which is more than the expected benefit of finding and treating blockages in a person with no symptoms. Some people would be helped by screenings, but more people are expected to be harmed.
I have also seen an unfortunate lack of timely follow-ups. I had a family member get a screening done, and shortly after he died of a heart attack, a letter came from the center saying that he should follow up with a cardiologist.
In my opinion, screening tests should be decided on by your doctor, who knows your medical history. I don’t recommend going to places that just do screening, even if the price (in money) is affordable.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old man in fairly good health, I think, except for osteoporosis. Three years ago, I had a very weak pulse rate and was hospitalized. My wife thought I was having a stroke. The cardiologist had a pacemaker implanted, and I’ve been good since.
But two months ago, the cardiologist listened to my chest and said I had a murmur, a word I didn’t know. She also said “sinuses” and “plaque” and “valve.” She ordered an echocardiogram, which I’ve had, but don’t know the results of yet. Am I in danger? If so, how much? -- W.C.G.
Q. A.
ANSWER: By now, I hope and expect that your cardiologist will have told you not to worry. A “murmur” is just a sound that doctors can hear from the heart, which sometimes means that there is damage to one of the four valves of the heart. Guessing by the terms she used, I think your cardiologist is concerned that you may have calcium (“plaque”) in the aortic valve, which is supported by the sinuses of Valsalva in the aortic root. Calcium in the aortic valve by itself may not cause problems, but it can keep the valve from being able to open all the way -- a condition called aortic stenosis. It isn’t always easy to hear the difference between aortic valve calcification and aortic stenosis, but an echocardiogram gives a very accurate measurement of the aortic valve opening.
If you have aortic stenosis, she will discuss your options, which may include surgery if it is severe. However, if you have the more common calcification without stenosis, she will make sure that your blood pressure and cholesterol levels are controlled and will likely redo the echo in a few years.

DID YOU KNOW?
Dogs are wildly popular pets. The American Pet Products Association saysthereare63.4millionhouseholds in the United States that have a dog, and with the exception of 2002 and 2015, that number has steadily risen since 2000. Certain breeds remain especially popular among dog owners. In August 2021, the pet insurance providerTrupanion released the most popular dog breeds of 2020, and the top five breeds were:
1. Labrador retriever
2. Golden retriever
3. Goldendoodle
4. German shepherd
5. Labradoodle
My name is Yoda and I am 1 year old. My mom and dad did a DNA test and I am part Norwegian Forest cat. I like high places and playing with my brother MOXIE. I don’t meow but I do alot of chattering. I am a foster failure. My mom and dad took care of me when I was still being bottle feed and fell in love with me. So I found my forever home and family.
Exercise the pet. Dogs need daily exercise to maintain healthy body weights and keep them from fits of boredom. A dog that is not properly exercised may engage in destructive behavior around the house to unleash its pent-up energy.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This Memorial Day, I hope you can call attention to the sacrifices made by war dogs, who have served side by side with American troops for over 100 years, taking on missions that their human counterparts could never do so well. Many gave their lives protecting others.
-- Charles B., via email
DEAR CHARLES: Absolutely. Military working dogs, often called “war dogs,” are an essential part of America’s armed forces. They provide security around the world and are trained for specialized missions like drugs and explosives detection, sentry duty, scouting, and search and rescue. Military working dogs are even part of special forces units. Over the past century, war dogs have played essential roles. In the past,German Shepherds were the primary breed used as military working dogs. Recently, the armed services have shifted to slightly smaller breeds. The Belgian Malinois is the preferred breed for military working dogs today.
Sadly, during the Vietnam War, thousands of military working dogs overseas were euthanized or abandoned when their service was done. In 2000, President Clinton signed a law that allowed war dogs to be adopted once their service was over.
More than 400 military working dogs have been killed in action since World War II. It’s estimated that they have saved over 10,000 lives. Today, a War Dog memorial stands in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania, to call attention to these selfless heroes, as well as a War Dog statue outside the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
As we remember the sacrifices of American troops this Memorial Day, I hope you’ll all take a moment to remember the loyal, highly trained working dogs who gave their all to keep their comrades in arms safe from harm.

Change suppliers. Many partnership opportunities can be effective even if they’re less public in nature. Global supply chains were in flux during the pandemic and have yet to return to normal. That makes now a great time for local businesses to reconsider their suppliers. When doing so, look into local suppliers and let it be known that your products are locally sourced. For example, local restaurant owners can highlight the fact that their foods are sourced from local farms and manufacturers. That may impress foodies with a fondness for freshness, and also should reassure customers who want to keep as many of their dollars in the local community as possible.

Stretching regularly can help alleviate pain, protect joints, prevent injury and maintain mobility as we age. Incorpora ng stretching sessions into your daily or weekly rou ne is a simple and effec ve way to enhance your health and well-being; a er all, you can do it anywhere, any me, without the need for any equipment. Here are a few ps to help seniors – or anyone – stretch safely:
• Warm up your muscles before stretching by walking or moving around for at least five minutes.
• Stretch gently and slowly, taking in a deep breath and exhaling as you stretch.
• Hold stretches for about 30 seconds, allowing muscles me to relax.
• Avoid bouncing while stretching, and never stretch to the point of pain.
Experts generally recommend 20 to 30 minutes of strength training two or three mes per week. Here’s why:
Preserve and build muscle.
Muscle mass diminishes with age, increasing your body fat percentage. Strength training can help turn the tables and keep body fat in check.
Strengthen bones.
Strength training increases bone density and reduces the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
Manage weight.
Increasing your metabolism and muscle with weights helps you burn calories more efficiently.
Maintain flexibility and balance.
Weight-bearing exercise can protect your joints from injury and reduce symptoms of arthri s, while also lowering your risk of falls by improving balance.
Enhance mood and quality of life.
Strength training can help reduce symptoms of many chronic condi ons like depression, back pain, heart disease and diabetes. Research also suggests that exercise may help support cogni ve func on in older adults.

The pinnacle of birthday celebrations, if there’s no piñata to break open, is when the birthday cake comes out and party attendees serenade the guest of honor. The song everyone harmonizes to is among the most widely recognized and well-loved tunes in the world. The “birthday song,” also known as “Happy Birthday to You,” is in the public domain in the United States and the European Union. The song originally was penned as a classroom greeting song titled “Good Morning to All,” written by sisters Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill. Both were educators and developed unique teaching strategies to assist students. The song was composed by Mildred and the lyrics were written by Patty to be used in kindergarten classrooms.
It is unclear who changed the lyrics and turned the song into a birthday ditty, as none of the earliest references to the song included credits or copyright notices. Two tales circulate regarding the eventual copyright of the song. One has The Summy Company registering a copyright in 1935, crediting authors Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R. R. Forman. The other says Jessica Hill, sister to Mildred and Patty, who was working with publisher Clayton F. Summy Company, copyrighted and published “Happy Birthday to You” in 1935. Eventually Warner Chappell bought the company that was originally The Summy Company, and argued the birthday song was under copyright until 2030, making performances of the song illegal without paying royalties. However, a federal judge ruled in 2015 that Warner Chappell’s claim to a copyright on the song was not valid. The judge ruled its registration only covered a specific piano version, not the melody and lyrics. Therefore, “Happy Birthday to You” can be sung both privately and publicly without being subject to royalties or other restrictions.

Today marks seven days since I’ve watched the television news. For a news junkie, that’s a very long time. But I feel much better for having taken a break.
It can’t be good for us, either mentally or physically, to be constantly bombarded with information that causes stress and likely has a health impact in the form of higher blood pressure.
The chronic chaos shown to us on television news even impacts us socially when we don’t know anymore what the safe topics are, and sometimes we just give up and don’t talk much at all when we’re with others. Gone is the spontaneity (and the joy) we once felt, and we eventually stop socializing altogether because of the additional stress it brings when in the company of others who insist on talking about negative news topics.
The news comes at us from several directions: the computer, the television, our cellphones. Add to that the stream of breaking news alerts either on the television or notifications chiming on our phones, and we just don’t get away from it.
Before I could go cold turkey and avoid the news, I knew I’d have to keep up with weather. In my area it’s safer to know what’s coming. To stay ahead of possible bad weather I use the Weather Channel on TV and Wunderground (www.wunderground.com) on the computer.
Not that I can do this indefinitely, of course, avoiding the news. At some point I’m going to have to check back in with the rest of the world. But it’s been a relief not to be bombarded with constant chaos, hysteria, sensational crawlers on the screen and differing viewpoints about world events.
I invite you to try it for yourself, even if it’s just for a few days. You’ll feel better. (c) 2025 King Features Synd.,

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Ratherthanstatethatyouwereresponsibleforprovidingcustomerservice, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence.
If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.

Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
