DEAR DR. ROACH: Please explain Hashimoto’s disease. I have heard that it is rare, but two colleagues have recently been diagnosed. We all work in a very high-stress field. -- J.H. ANSWER: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not at all a rare disease. It occurs in up to 10% of the population and much more frequently in women than men.

Although people can be diagnosed at a young age, it is more common at older ages. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction to different parts of the thyroid, with thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase antibodies commonly found. TSH receptor antibodies are found on occasion.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis most commonly causes low thyroid levels, although there may be a period of time early in the disease where thyroid levels are high. Not everybody with antibodies will develop low thyroid levels. The thyroid is sometimes enlarged, but a careful exam will usually show that the gland is firm, showing that immune cells have infiltrated the gland.

Treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis involves replacing the thyroid hormone that the gland can no longer make. The dose depends on body size to a certain extent, but needs to be adjusted based on lab results.

Most people are treated with levothyroxine, also called T4, which is the primary hormone made by the thyroid.

T4 is converted to T3 (also called triiodothyronine, the active form of the hormone) in various tissues outside the thyroid. T3 only stays in the body for a short while before it is destroyed, so a once-daily treatment with T4, which lasts longer, allows the body to convert T4 to T3.

Most people do very well with T4 treatment. A minority of people cannot efficiently make the active T3 form, in which case-combination treatment can be considered.

Unfortunately, T3 must be dosed twice daily.

It is thought that stress hormones play a role, since stress does seem to increase the risk of developing an autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s.

We were able to distribute over 6,400 toys to approximately 1,900 children through our participating partners due to your generosity. Many of these children would not have been able to enjoy a Merry Christmas without your help. All toys that were collected in Ontario and Livingston Counties were distributed within those counties through the various participating agencies. We are very grateful for their help.

Seasonal [Local Bridge] is BS Why is the [local bridge] closed in the Summer? It makes it pretty tough to ride a bike between [local town] and [local town]! Also, why didn’t they make the thing 20 feet higher than it is? Seems like they could have done a lot better job with that bridge than they did!

Would it really be so tough to change the schedule to let people get across in September, October, and April?

We need authority to step up I work at a store in my local town and in my dept. we had a bullying situation.

This person tried to ignore the individuals who would harass them, made rude comments or just blatantly gave dirty looks just to get them going. It was horrible to see them stressed or in tears because of this unnecessary drama.

This person went to the two different managers to tell them what was going on. Their response was “Just ignore it” or “I’m not a HS Principal, just figure out a way to deal with it.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When we first start we have to watch videos on harassment and bullying and afterwards we need to sign a paper stating that we watched it.

The video clearly states that if you are experiencing uncomfortable situations like this, the person to go to was your manager. And they have the audacity to tell them to just ignore it? Do your job as a manager and help protect the employees you’re supposed to oversee and help keep protected from situations like this!

Does Pet Insurance Extend to Pet Sitters?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I left my dog Shep in the care of a pet sitter for a week while I was away on business. The sitter texted me that Shep cut his paw during a walk in the nearby woods, and they took him to my veterinarian for care. Shep is doing fine now. I have pet insurance, but I don’t think it’s my responsibility to pay for this. The injury occurred while the sitter was walking him. The sitter says that injury and illness are my responsibility to cover. Who should pay? -- Bill in Chicago

DEAR BILL: Did the sitter give any details of how Shep was injured?

The circumstances are important. For example, if Shep was on-leash and stepped on an unexpected piece of debris in the path, that’s different than if Shep was let off-leash and was running free in the woods. But, if you normally let him off-leash in the woods and instructed the sitter that it was OK to do that, then that’s another consideration.

Talk more with the sitter to get more details. In the meantime, pay the vet and submit the reimbursement claim to the pet insurance company.

Professional sitters routinely include a statement in their contract with clients that any illness or injury is the responsibility of the client. This protects them from financial loss if something does happen. However, if they are accused of deliberately neglecting or abusing a pet in their care, that statement won’t protect them.

On this note, I’ll add that sitters should purchase liability insurance that specifically covers them and their business in case a claim is made against them -- or worse, if they’re injured while caring for someone else’s pet.

Strings in Harmony: Ken Luk’s Journey through Music and Education

en Luk, a prominent figure in the Rochester area music scene, wears many hats, both in his professional career and as a musician. Ken is a lecturer of guitar at SUNY Geneseo and Alfred University, an instructor of gamelan at the Eastman School of Music, and an instructor of guitar, mandolin, and gamelan at the Eastman Community Music School. He is also a co-founder of Rochester Classical Guitar, and the Rochester Mandolin Orchestra.

Ken’s journey with different instruments began early in his life.

Ken says that while he has no memory of it, his mom says he asked for piano lessons at age 5. By the time Ken was 7, when his younger brother started violin lessons, Ken would pick up the instrument and play all the tunes his brother had learned. The brothers ended up taking violin lessons until Ken was 19 and left for college in the US. As a teenager in Hong Kong, Ken and his friends listened to a lot of Japanese rock and with inspiration to start a J-rock cover band, Ken bought a bass and his friend bought a guitar. Though his friend soon lost interest in playing, Ken borrowed his guitar and learned those parts as well. When he came to the US, circumstances inspired Ken to pursue classical guitar studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.

While the classical guitar remains his primary instrument, since graduating in 2018, Ken has delved into mandolin (Brazilian choro and classical) and fingerstyle ukulele. Inspired by Annibal Augusto Sardinha (better known as Garoto), the Brazilian virtuoso on multiple plucked string instruments, Ken occasionally explores the sounds of a tenor guitar and a lap steel guitar.

Ken says he appreciates learning about the culture behind the music he plays. He acknowledges the spiritual connection he feels with certain styles he pursues. He loves collaborative music-making, emphasizing the joy of learning complex pieces with fellow musicians and the shared experience of a live performance.

One of Ken’s most notable moments as an educator occurred last Spring at SUNY Geneseo. He organized a concert for his guitar students, playing solo or in small groups. The concert culminated with an arrangement of Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man,” where all 20 of his students performed as a guitar orchestra.

With his musical versatility and adaptability, Ken is deeply engaged in various musical projects, showcasing his diverse talents across the area. He is part of Mosaic Foundation, Janus Guitar Duo, Trio Ghidorah, Rosa Boemia, fivebyfive, Scatter the Mud, Rochester Mandolin Orchestra, Eastman Gamelan Ensemble, and more.

Ken has played in a variety of venues, but especially appreciates the intimate setting of the Little Theatre Café, as well as their support of a wide array of musical acts and styles.

Additionally, he enjoys playing at outdoor, family-friendly events like the Lilac Festival and Fairport Canal Days, relishing the joy of people having a good time while appreciating music.

Boemia. These mark his first serious foray into music composition, and Ken is eager to see how they resonate with audiences. Additionally, Ken is finalizing the details of the Rochester Guitar Festival, an annual classical guitar festival in April that brings international touring guitarists to perform in Rochester.

Ken Luk’s journey as a musician and educator is a testament to his passion, versatility, and dedication.

From teaching at multiple institutions to performing with various Rosa Boemia - from left to right: Bernardo groups, Ken continues Marcondes, Darien Lamen, and Ken Luk to push boundaries and explore the rich tapestry of music, creating a lasting impact on the local music scene and beyond. The future holds exciting possibilities for this multifaceted musician.

The Rochester Mandolin Orchestra will host the Classical Mandolin Society of America convention in October 2024. Attracting world class musicians to Rochester, the RMO will also present a concert, and convention participants will all present a mandolin orchestra concert (in the past convention, the orchestra has had 120+ musicians, so imagine that!). “It’s going to be a really unique event!”

Ken says. “I look forward to hosting my mandolin friends from all over the country in my hometown and presenting the classical mandolin to the Rochester general public.”

A SWEET TREAT FOR GET-TOGETHERS Yields 64 Crust 21/2 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cups butter or margarine, melted Filling 3 cups pecan halves, divided 2 cups packed brown sugar 3 eggs 4 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt Powdered sugar, optional Preheat oven to 350 F. For crust, combine flour, powdered sugar and baking soda in a batter bowl. Add butter; mix until crumbly. Lightly press crumb mixture over bottom of stoneware bar pan; roll lightly. Bake 15 minutes; remove from oven to a cooling rack.

Meanwhile for filling, reserve 1 cup of the pecans for garnish; chop remaining pecans.

Combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, eggs, butter, vanilla, and salt; mix well. Pour filling over warm crust, spreading to edges of pan. Arrange remaining pecan halves over filling. Bake 17 to 19 minutes, or until filling is set in center. Remove from oven; cool completely.

Sprinkle with additional powdered sugar, if desired. Cut into 32 squares using a utility knife; cut each square in half diagonally.

Henry L. Peck January 18, 2024 Henry L. Peck, age 83 of Atlanta, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, early on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at the Vincent House in Wayland.

Henry was born on October 7, 1940 in N. Cohocton to the late Adrian & Mildred (Sauerbier) Peck. He graduated from Wayland Central School in 1957.

Henry started his working career as a potato farmer; later he would join Local 832 out of Rochester and became an operating engineer running heavy equipment. Henry retired from Babcock Enterprises of Dansville, NY after a successful career.

Henry married Margaret “Peggy” Kelly on September 5, 1964 and together they raised three children: Tracy, Henry and Matthew. He was a devoted father and attended every event his children were in. Henry was instrumental in the building of the NCA Sports Club. He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and Life-Member of the Atlanta Fire Department as well as the NRA. In his free time Henry enjoyed being outdoors. He was an avid hunter & fisherman and liked to play golf. Henry loved being in his vegetable garden, making spaghetti sauce and salsa, plus canning & freezing a large amount of vegetables. More than anything, Henry loved spending time with his children & grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Henry is predeceased by his sister, Carol and his nephews, Mark & Jeff.

Henry is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Peggy; his beloved children, Tracy (Nicholas) Masucci of Syracuse, NY; Henry (Deanna) Peck of Yulee, FL; & Matthew ( Jessica) Peck of Albany, NY; his grandchildren, Cindy, Nick, MacKenzie, Trent, Samantha, & Jacob; sister-in-law, Susan Kelly of S. Carolina; and several nieces, nephews, cousins & great-grandchildren.

At this time there are no funeral services planned.

Jerry was born in Wayland on December 31, 1941, the son of Harold and Gertrude (Gessner) Fox. He grew up in Wayland and attended high school there. Jerry resided in Springwater from 1963-1985 when he then moved to Rush for 5 years. In 1990, he moved back to Springwater where he resided ever since. Jerry worked for Lewis General for 5 years and then began a long career with the City of Rochester Water Supply, retiring as the Superintendent of the City Water Supply.

Jerry’s hobbies were many! He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening (both vegetables and flowers). Watching NASCAR with his son-in-law, Brent Quackenbush was definitely a favorite pastime for him on Sundays with Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. being his favorite drivers throughout the years. He loved cooking and especially enjoyed his smoker. Spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren was also very important to him. Jerry and his companion, Paulette Henry had been together for 29 years. They enjoyed travelling to Florida together for the winters and spending time with family and friends.

Jerry was involved with many different organizations throughout his life that included Life Member and Past Chief of the Springwater Fire Department; Life Member of the Springwater Rod and Gun Club; Life Member of the Dansville Moose Club and a Life Member of the NRA. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Gertrude Fox; and his brother-in-law, Harold “Tootie” Plain. He is survived by his companion, Paulette Henry of Springwater; his daughters, Bonnie ( John) Steff of Naples, Shelley (Brent) Quackenbush of Wayland and Becky (Dan) Van Allen of Dansville; his stepson, William Henry (Kerrie Weed) of Dansville; his grandchildren, Chelsea ( Jason) Huff, Hannah Steff, Brittany (Curtis) Minster, Taylor Quackenbush, Jordyn Quackenbush, Dillin Quackenbush; his step-grandchildren, Shelby Hoag, Morgan Henry and Michael Henry; his great-grandchildren, Giana, Cecilia, Liam and Clayton; his step great-grandchildren, Carter and Cooper; his sister, Ginnie Plain of Elgin, TX; and many nieces and nephews; Paulette’s siblings, Sharon Hoffman of Wayland and Chuck (Kim) Swink of Dansville; many other extended family members within Paulette’s family.

Jerry’s family and friends called Thursday, January 18th from 4-7pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. His funeral service was held Friday at 11am at the funeral home. Committal prayers and interment took place immediately following at Covered Bridge Cemetery in Springwater.

Colleen M. Renno January 14, 2024 Wayland – Colleen M. Renno, 68 years of age, passed away early Sunday morning, January 14, 2024 at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.

Colleen was born October 26, 1955 in Cleveland, OH, the daughter of John E. and Corrine M (Bock) Corcoran.

Throughout the years she resided in several different areas including Cleveland, OH, Brighton, West Bloomfield and in 1983 she moved to Wayland and remained there ever since. Colleen graduated from Brighton High School in Rochester and earned an AAS in Accounting from Monroe County Community College.

Colleen and William C. Renno were married February 27, 1984 and celebrated over 36 years together prior to Bill passing away in September of 2020. Colleen loved quilting. She was a member of a quilting group with her friends for years, making quilts for charity that included veterans, children and nursing homes. Colleen and Bill loved going to Florida for the winter, camping in their motorhome. However, Colleen’s greatest joy for the past several years had been doting on her only grandchild, Violet.

Colleen was predeceased by her parents, John and Corrine Corcoran; her husband, William “Bill” Renno; and a sister, Mary Alice Zimmer.

She is survived by her son, Dennis (Marjorie) Renno; her granddaughter, Violet; her stepsons, Douglas Renno and William “Skip” (Patricia) Renno; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; her sisters, Cecile ( Jay) Chapin and Anne (Bret) Rockwell and her brother, John P. Corcoran; along with several nieces and nephews.

Baseball UMPIRES Wanted 4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day.

While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day.

1. Embrace organization tools.

Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations.

2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients.

3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction.

4. Reconsider your commute.

Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day.

Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
