LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY

Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior.

While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly. •

Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. Curb appeal can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home.

TRICKS TO KEEP FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FRESH

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a small mutt from the local shelter and named her “Moxie.” She’s adorable but really energetic. She’ll actually jump straight up in the air as high as my waist! She also tugs hard at the leash when we walk. How do I tame all of this energy? -- Janice F., Hyde Park, New York

DEAR JANICE: Congratulations on your new pet! Moxie sounds like a bundle of joy. But I can understand that all her energy can be tiring.

In addition to walks twice a day (or more, if you can swing it), give Moxie plenty of puppy toys to play with at home, and spend time with her on the floor just playing fetch and helping her work off more of that energy.

She may also respond very well to a consistent schedule of walks, feeding and bedtime (yes, bedtime). Build certain predictable routines around each of these events. When it’s time for a walk, call Moxie and have her sit while you put on her leash. During walks, keep the leash short and work on the “heel” command. But when in a safe, open area, give Moxie more room on the leash to explore. When it’s bedtime, create a routine that is the same every night -- one that is positive, with a little play time and a signal to settle down and rest (such as turning down the lights).

Now, if Moxie’s energetic behavior is morphing into something more serious, like destroying furniture or being aggressive toward other dogs or humans on walks, that’s a problem you’ll need to address as soon as possible. Talk to Moxie’s vet about ways to reduce her hyperactivity and anxiety (if those are the causes). If she isn’t responding to basic behavioral training, hire a trainer to help.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Monitor water temperature: The temperature of the water in the vase should coordinate with the flowers on display. Do not use hot water or the stems will cook. Room temperature is best for most flowers, except for blooms from bulbs that flower during cooler months, such as tulips and daffodils. They’ll be more likely to thrive in cooler water, according to Consumer Reports. St.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

DID YOU KNOW?

Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

Grateful to Alert Driver

Excess Noise

Saturday, April 6th just before noon on 15A in Rush, a child ran into the road right in front of my vehicle. There was no other option than to slam on my brakes. The driver following me in a black SUV quickly veered into the other lane, avoiding striking my vehicle, which surely would have been catastrophic for the child as it would have propelled me forward and into the child’s path. I am extremely grateful for the driver’s alertness and defensive actions and wish to express a very sincere THANK YOU. From the Red Honda CRV

After attending a weekend celebration I have to ask: Why does the band or music have to be so loud? Even when sitting the furthest away you have to turn your ear within a foot to hear someone talk, that’s ridiculous! Then everyone around has to raise their volume. To come home with ringing in your ears and a sore throat ruins the fun.

Young People in Management

Eclipse brings “sunshine”

While some of us may have missed out on a clear view of the eclipse, warmth reigned even as the temperature dropped, as we shared and connected with others. So many people spent time with friends and family that traveled for the unique event. Many small towns hosted gatherings for community members to make memories with families, friends, and no-longer-strangers. Thank you to those who hosted events for such amazing, once-in-a-lifetime memories! Because – even though it may have been cloudy, the people around you made it feel warm and sunny!

I don’t think young people belong in management positions. There’s so many reasons for this. For one, they walk in without any experience and not truly prepared for what needs to be done. Everyone knows with age comes wisdom. They’re just not comprehending how to run a place properly, or listen to concerns and then sometimes they don’t really know what to do about it. Sometimes it’s just laziness. Some sit around and do nothing. Walk around, looking around, flirting. Please choose better or pay attention to what’s going on.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Constant Aleve

and

Ibuprofen Consumption Can Cause Damage

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, age 70, had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his neck, for which he would take Aleve to relieve his discomfort when needed. Just before Christmas last year, his back began hurting so much that he went to his doctor, who said to get up and move more. (We have always exercised and remained active in life, but he did slow down due to his pain.)

My husband then added ibuprofen to the Aleve he was already using. His doctor said that the pain is due to osteoarthritis in his mid-back area. Apparently, there is nothing to do for it but take Extra Strength Tylenol at the recommended dose. Ibuprofen or Aleve isn’t recommended because it causes liver and kidney damage. So, we bought Tylenol, and he used this medication instead of his usual. But his pain only got worse.

So, this morning, he switched back to Aleve and ibuprofen. It is what helped before and is helping again now. In addition, he is using a drug-free Aleve Direct Therapy pad that uses waveform technology. He also uses Icy Hot pain relief cream and a heating pad. These reduce his pain, but his back continues to hurt since before the holidays.

Our question is, should he use Aleve and ibuprofen instead of the Tylenol that doesn’t seem to help? He has actually used Aleve for a very long time. He just had his blood tested, and the doctor said his liver and kidneys are good. Is there anything more we can do to relieve his osteoarthritic pain? It is hard to see my husband in so much discomfort when he was previously a very active, pain-free man. -- S.F.A.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis in the neck is a common and painful condition, and there are not always good treatment options. In terms of medicine, anti-inflammatory medicines, like Aleve or ibuprofen (Advil and many other brands), can be very helpful for some people. However, taking both doesn’t improve pain relief. It does increase the risk of toxicity, so he should never take two anti-inflammatory medicines -- choose just one. Tylenol helps some people, but in my experience, most people do better with anti-inflammatories instead of Tylenol. Tylenol does have a smaller risk of side effects. In addition to liver and kidney problems, Aleve and similar medicines can cause stomach problems, ranging from mild upset to life-threatening ulcers; though, this is uncommon with over-thecounter doses. I often recommend a trial of Tylenol to see if it is as good as the anti-inflammatories. Since it’s not for your husband, he should tell his doctor this, and it seems reasonable for him to go back to taking Aleve alone. However, I can’t tell you to disregard his physician’s advice. Some people benefit from Tylenol on top of Aleve.

Beyond pain medicines, the Aleve Direct Therapy pad uses electricity to relieve pain without medicine. It’s fine to combine this therapy with medicines. Creams -- whether they are antiinflammatory, menthol and camphor, or topical anesthetics -provide some relief, but they tend to be better on the hands, wrists and knees than the neck. Though, they still may be worth trying in combination with medicines.

In more severe cases, injections can be used before considering surgery.

From Environmental Anthropology to Free Verse, Keith Tidball Lauds Creative Writing as the “Free-ist” of Speech

Keith Tidball is a distinguished figure in environmental anthropology and natural resource management, with a career spanning over two decades at Cornell University, including serving as Assistant Director at Cornell Cooperative Extension for the past five years and Senior Extension Associate in Natural Resources and the Environment for the past thirteen. Directing civic ecology initiatives at Cornell for a decade before that, Tidball has emerged as a leading voice in recruiting citizen conservationists and “cultivating a 21st-century land ethic.”

With a PhD in Natural Resources from Cornell University, an MA in International Development Studies from George Washington University, and a BA in Anthropology from the University of Kentucky, he effectively uses his expertise to improve the world. Grounded in cultural anthropology, disturbance ecology, and environmental psychology, Keith’s expertise is fortified by his diverse experiences, including military service and international disaster response across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Beyond academia, Keith is deeply committed to understanding the role of outdoor recreation in fostering resilience and recovery, particularly among veterans and trauma survivors. An avid outdoorsman himself, he finds solace and balance in the wilderness, actively mentoring others in hunting, angling, and woodcra . Residing on a farm overlooking Cayuga Lake in upstate New York with his family, Keith’s dedication to environmental stewardship and community engagement continues to inspire and drive positive change.

Tidball also writes poetry, and to honor this year’s National Poetry Month, it’s a pleasure to share his story. He says his writing started as earlyasjuniorhighschool,with“silly,love-smittentypesofpoems,filled with self-conscious vocabulary and naive chivalry.” Now, his poetry is mostly free verse, featuring rhyming and alliteration but not in formal patterns. Not afraid to sample haiku, acrostic poetry, and even a few odes and epics, Tidball follows the muse wherever it takes him. Most inspiration for creative writing, he says, comes from experiences in nature or relationships. He says, “I think the commonality is intimacy in its many configurations.”

How would you describe your writing habits? “How” do write your pieces?

My writing comes in fits. I feel it well up and then it’s time. I am currently reading a book gi ed to me by a creative friend called Daily Rituals by Mason Curry. I am struck by how many talented artists and writers are very regimented and productive. My process is to do other work and wait confidently for the arrival of the muse. In a superstitious way, I believe I must respond immediately, though, or I might not see the muse again for a long time. I o en obsess over cadence. e order [and] the pace of the words must be just right or I am sleepless.

What are your favorite topics or themes to write about?

I love writing about natural phenomena that can convey multiple meanings or layers of meanings that get at essentials, at essence. I love to write about that which compels.

What writing groups/networks do you connect with?

e Hazmat Journal community back in the ‘90s was really inspirational and formative for me. Norm Davis, Emmit Michie, [and] others. Nowadays, I lurk in various social media poetry, writing, and arts groups, seeking kindreds and compunction.

What are your favorite accomplishments?

I think my greatest accomplishment as a creative writer is to have exposed and inspired my grown daughters to appreciate literature, art, and writing – to live artfully, to live with and know what to do with the urge to express through other means.

Whatroledoescreativewriting and/or poetry play in everyday life? What role should it play?

Today we are bombarded with distractions, with conscriptions. Creative writing, and reading and appreciating creative writing, is a pathway out of indentured servitude to consumerist and uncreative society. We should protect and cherish creative writing, perhaps the “free-est” of speech.

What advice would you give a budding writer?

I would give them two pieces of advice: First, one of my mantras, something I coined in my early twenties – “All distractions are equal.” Second, write like you dance when no one is watching. Let yourself out first and then dra from there.

Tidball shares much of his writings and visual art pieces on his blog, “When I Wax” at https://wheniwax.blogspot.com/. Find other writing on www.keithtidball.net.

Tumbler

Her cowboy without a horse is wiser than waking except her rebel without a cause is in his seventh duplication. He bristles blue like an indigo snake flexing his artichoke mane while shaking his tumbler from the post-eclectic days he mumbles

“Faith Burns” – hell of a name.

Unction

Remembered impulseinstinctual child-like obedience to tilt the head and swallow when thunder calls.

Turn off your notifications.According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS

Take the foreground into consideration. When you find an inspiring landscape to photograph, skip the empty landscapes and think about zeroing in on something interesting in the foreground. This can be a particularly attractive flower in front of a vast field, or even a rusty watering can left out in a row of crops. Items in the foreground impart interest in the photo.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB

Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
