TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Seal cracks and gaps around your home’s windows, doors, and vents. These can be a considerable source of energy loss, allowing conditioned air to escape and unconditioned air to infiltrate your home, placing stress on your furnace and air conditioner in the process. An easy DIY solution is to caulk around windows, doors, and vents, and install or replace worn weatherstripping. An average home loses up to 30 percent of its energy through air leaks, so sealing your home is a worthwhile exercise.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Dec. 13, 1621, the first American fur exports leave for England aboard the Fortune, only to be stolen by the French. Real Estate Easy Ways to Increase Appeal Make a more enchanting entrance. The very first part of the home prospective buyers will see is the front door. Typically, the house number is located right near the front door, so the buyers will be looking for the number and once they see it they can’t help but look at the door itself. A decrepit or older door will not make a good first impression. If you don’t want (or need) to replace the door, touch up the paint job. Other ways to improve a home’s entrance is to make sure the doorknob or doorknocker is polished before showing a home, and to ensure the doorbell is functioning as well. These are small and easy projects, but if neglected, they’ll give buyers the impression that other, bigger things might have been neglected as well. If your home has a front porch or stoop, be sure to inspect it for cracks. An older porch or stoop should be replaced, and any chips or cracks in the steps should be fixed.

The holiday season is a special time of year to give thanks and spend time with loved ones. While the holidays are an inherently happy time, that joyful mood can be marred by the crooks who like to take advantage of people’s generosity, as well as their propensity to pay less attention to their surroundings as they do during less hectic times of year. Instances of certain crimes, particularly theft and identity theft, increase around the holiday season. Allstate Insurance advises that break-ins in residential areas may increase during the holiday season as well. That’s because thieves know that many homes are empty or cars are full of highpriced presents. Put the focus back on good cheer, delicious food, celebrations and gifting - protect yourself and your property this holiday season.

Mooney’s LeRoy

1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons super fine sugar 1 tablespoon Cointreau or Armagnac (optional) good quality cocoa powder 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Scant 1/2 pound dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa solids Scald the cream with the sugar by just bringing to the boil and then removing from the heat immediately. Whisk in the chocolate piece by piece until you have a smooth emulsion. Allow to cool slightly then whisk in the butter, again in pieces, followed by the alcohol if you are using it. Chill the mixture in the freezer 20 minutes. Now stir the mixture well and, using either two teaspoons if you are dexterous or your fingers if you don’t mind getting messy, fashion the truffles into small balls. Place on parchment paper or foil on a baking sheet and put in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or so. Roll well in the cocoa powder and leave in the refrigerator at least overnight before serving.

Feel Festive with Florals An easy first step to bring your home into the holiday season is to add festive fresh or dry floral arrangements. Evergreens and poinsettias always convey the essence of the season, but blooms in hues of rich purple, crisp white and even funky fuchsia will add cheerful energy to any room. A small floral arrangement on a bathroom vanity, for example, adds warmth and color - a particularly nice touch if you’re hosting guests.

Some people may think they know how to wrap gifts, only to realize it’s harder than it looks once the paper, scissors and Scotch tape comes out. Relearn the basics by viewing online tutorials prior to wrapping gifts so the lessons learned remain fresh in your mind. Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars  Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Why Is Alcohol Banned With Antibiotics? DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/ GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CROWN PERFORMANCE When a tooth is missing or so damaged that it requires extensive repair, a dental crown is the restoration of choice. Also known as a “cap,” this type of cosmetic restoration has the longest life expectancy of all others. When cemented in place, a crown completely encapsulates the remaining portion of tooth and fully restores the damaged or missing tooth’s size, shape, function, and appearance. While gold alloy crowns last the longest, porcelainfused-to-metal crowns have a more natural appearance and are made to match the color of adjacent teeth. All porcelain or all-ceramic dental crowns provide the best natural color match, while pressed ceramic crowns have a hard inner core that replaces the metal liner used in the

all-ceramic crown-making process. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we perform a variety of procedures, including crowns. We recommend regular check-ups, periodic cleanings, and x-rays when needed. We stress preventive dentistry for all members of the family. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we strive to teach you good oral hygiene. In the long run you will have better dental health. Please call 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment. P.S. Pressed ceramic crowns are capped with porcelain, which provides the best natural color match. They are also more longlasting than an allporcelain crown.

Cooking for one or two Seniors face many changes as they move into their golden years. Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common, as is implementing certain changes to improve quality of life. Many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. Supermarkets are increasingly offering larger packages of food products as well as “family size” offerings to compete with warehouse clubs. Buying in bulk can help individuals save money, but it may not always be practical for people living alone or with just a spouse. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. Otherwise, look for bulk items that are individually wrapped to maintain freshness. Many canned and jarred items can be covered and stored in the refrigerator after containers are opened. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. Broiled or grilled chicken can be used to make soups, stir-fry dishes, fajitas, and sandwiches. The fewer ingredients you have to buy, the smaller the risk of spoilage.

Hobbies for the golden years W hen deciding on a hobby, you can first take an inventory of your skills and interests. If you have alw ays been handy around w ood and construction, perhaps a w oodw orking hobby w ill be enjoyable and also may w ork as a source of income revenue. Other activities that require the use of the hands and mind include knitting, needlepoint, painting, puzzles, quilting, scrapbooking, and crocheting. These can keep the mind active and improve dexterity and fine motor skills.

• Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. Then the containers can be taken out as needed and heated quickly in the microwave for fast meals. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. If you’re accustomed to cooking larger portion sizes, do so and then spread the wealth with others in the group. Then sit back and relax when it is your opportunity to have meals delivered to you.

(585) 343-0022 604 E. Main St., Batavia, NY woodsidegranite.com Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Light Hill / Canandaigua Comfort Care Home opened nearly six months ago to care for our residents at their end-oflife. Prior to that, there were months of renovations at the hands of several extremely talented and skilled volunteer craftsmen. The home’s operation is only possible because of our incredible family of volunteers. They have come for different reasons from different backgrounds, willing to care for our residents with a caring heart. NOVEMBER is NATIONAL HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH, the ideal time to express our deep gratitude for the love, care and compassion with which they fill our homes every day. In addition, there are many more who keep our place running just like any other home. Every day at Light

From the man in the red truck and his dog Skipper: I’ve been taking my dog Skipper for rides in my truck for many years now. He looks forward to it and enjoys it! I’m sure it bothers many people, for he is barking all along the way. It was so encouraging and kind of the neighbors on Chick Rd. to write up a positive comment. Thank you for seeing the bright side of our story!

Wouldn’t it be nice at this time of THANKS GIVING…That we remind ourselves of how fortunate we are to have loving people and warm surroundings to our table of blessings. Perhaps instead of acrimonious debate, we could bring warm thoughts and good conversation to our table of gratitude. May it be so… Namaste… Randy Pawley

The remainder of S601 & S602 should be read by all-- covers the fines and being arrested for failure to comply. NO LAW TO KEEP CATS INSIDE.

It was great to see the Homecoming Parade. As I have done for SO many years, I took a plastic bag with me. This was PARTIALLY to collect the candies and gifts thrown by the participants. But after the parade is over, it is ALWAYS the same ~ I backtrack and go along the route to the beginning of the parade picking up the wrappers left behind by the litterbugs. It would be SO nice if one year, I went along, and found NO WRAPPERS left behind. I am sure the residents along the route would agree! As for the candy that is missed, think about this: I am sure the residents along the route appreciate the ants that the missed candy brings. PLEASE look around to be sure you haven’t missed any candy! You can ALWAYS donate what you don’t want. PLEASE also look around to see if you can pick up wrappers!
