On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, I dropped a portfolio of legal papers in Routes 5 & 20 between Parrish St Ext and Route 21 in Canandaigua. By the time I realized what happened, papers were strewn about on both shoulders of this busy highway. While picking up papers from one side of the road, I noticed a woman had stopped on the opposite side to get the papers which had blown there. In my state of panic, I didn’t think to ask for her name, but she definitely saved the day for me and restored my faith in the kindness of others.

Our six-month-old great granddaughter’s bunny rabbit was inadvertently left at Egypt Park a couple of weeks ago. When Great Grandpa returned later that night, the bunny rabbit was sitting and waiting on one of the picnic tables. Thank you to whoever rescued him. You saved the day (and night). Thank you, thank you!

Obesity is on the rise among pets.

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016.

That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago.

Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot.

Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers.

Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt.

Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person.

Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

GREEK SALAD IN JARS Courtesy of Simply Recipes • Makes: 4 salads Salad Dressing: Salads: 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/4 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus additional, to taste 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved pinch of black pepper, plus additional, to taste 1/2 large English cucumber, sliced 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 yellow or orange bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon honey 3/4 cup California black ripe olives 5 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup (4 ounces) crumbled feta cheese 4 pint-size canning jars with lids 4 small handfuls fresh baby spinach or other dark, leafy greens 4 pita bread rounds, halved (optional) To prepare dressing: In small bowl, whisk together vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano and honey.

Gradually whisk in oil. Taste. Add additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Divide dressing between four pint jars.

To assemble salads: Divide onion between four jars. Divide tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, olives and feta cheese between jars. Pack remaining space with spinach, compressing leaves slightly.

Secure lids and refrigerate up to two days.

Heart Attack Symptoms Not Always Painful ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My very healthy husband collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. They worked on him for a long time but could not revive him. They didn’t do an autopsy, and they declared his death as “atherosclerotic vascular disease.” He was 79 years old and had no health problems. He came into the house and said that something was in his throat and he couldn’t swallow.

He tried to cough it up, but nothing came up. He then collapsed.

He had no pain. I am still puzzled by that symptom of a heart attack. Have you ever heard of that? I am really curious and still in shock. I hope you can explain. -- T.S. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I think he likely did have a heart attack, which is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world.

Although many people have symptoms of heart disease that they ignore, some people have no symptoms until sudden death.

Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol plaque and calcium in the blood vessels of the heart, almost always is present in people with a heart attack.

The initial symptom of a heart attack varies widely. Throat discomfort is not rare. Cough is a common symptom, as the heart becomes damaged and the pressure in the lungs increases.

The classic symptom of chest pain certainly does happen, but there are many variations. Both men and women can have atypical presentations. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Parkinson’s disease.

He also has a stent in his heart. We have been to many doctors to address a breathing problem: fast breathing. He experiences this daily, and we are told that it is anxiety. It is difficult to watch him go through this. It sometimes happens before he is due for his Sinemet, but other times right after taking it.

He has been prescribed Xanax, clonidine, cannabidiol-infused gummies and a few others. One doctor says it is from Parkinson’s, but the rest say it is anxiety. -- E.W. ANSWER: Shortness of breath can have many causes, but someone with Parkinson’s disease has an unusual possibility, called “respiratory dyskinesia” (which just means “abnormal movement of the muscles of breathing”). This is an involuntary rapid breathing that causes distress, and it usually happens an hour after taking a medication like Sinemet. Changing the dose can help with diagnosis, and working with a neurologist to adjust the dose of the Sinemet (which comes in fast-acting and slowrelease formulations) can solve the problem. I would start with an expert on Parkinson’s. Keeping a diary of when he takes his medication and when the breathing trouble starts and stops will be helpful, as would a video of what it looks like when happening.

Having Parkinson’s doesn’t make someone less likely to have other causes of shortness of breath, and anyone with a stent in the heart (meaning a history of blockages of at least one heart artery) is at risk of developing further blockages. Poor blood flow to the heart is another potential cause. Get the Parkinson’s evaluation first.

I would not recommend anti-anxiety medications unless there is clear evidence of benefit. Ascribing a physical symptom like shortness of breath to anxiety without a thorough workup is unwise.

Questions older drivers can ask themselves to see if it’s still safe to drive Men and women know that adjustments must be made as they get older. Athletes nearing their golden years may not be able to push themselves as hard at the gym as they once did. Professionals nearing retirement age might not be able to pull long hours at the office like they used to.

But aging affects more than just work and play. As men and women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness and reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities.

How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Association notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs and pedestrians, and handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems.

Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination and flexibility can make it hard for aging men and women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal and difficulty turning the steering wheel.

Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles.

Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs and traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians. Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, and some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations.

Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly.

Do I drive with passengers? Drivers who routinely drive with passengers, especially young children, carry extra responsibility.

As a result, such drivers owe it to themselves and their passengers to honestly assess their driving abilities.

Various remedies can address age-related driving issues, and drivers should discuss them with their doctors the moment they feel as though their skills behind the wheel are starting to diminish.

Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies.Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

Seymour Library: Brockport’s Award-Winning Gem

I

n honor of September, National Library Card Sign-up Month, we are taking a closer look at some of your favorite, local libraries!

Seymour Library is the award-winning, Brockport-based library which has embraced the challenge of serving three municipalities at once: Brockport, Clarkson and Sweden. This year, Seymour Library received the annual Library of the Year award from the Rochester Regional Library Council.

“It is quite an honor,” said Seymour Library Adult Services Librarian, Abby DeVuyst. “All the libraries in Upstate New York are considered, and we won in the public libraries category, thanks to our wonderful patrons and the postcards they wrote in about why they love us and need us and about why we are important to them.”

Every program offered is free. “Nobody is charged for any kind of programming, which is wonderful,” said DeVuyst. “Everyone is welcome. We are an option for people who do not have the funds to go out. There are so many amazing things they can do here. This is a huge community service, and, while it may be forgotten sometimes, it shouldn’t be.”

DeVuyst mentioned a wide variety of needful services the library provides from Alzheimer’s programs to help searching for employment to assistance signing up for health care. “This is so important to us because I think a lot of times, when people are doing well in life and they do not need our services, they forget about us, but we continue to help people from all walks of life,” she said.

The 53rd Annual RRLC Library of the Year Lunch and award ceremony took place on June 6th. “Several people complimented us on providing the level of service we do considering we serve three communities,” recalled DeVuyst. “That was really wonderful. It was a nice nod to the fact that we are relevant, utilized by the community and span the age spectrum. We are so proud and happy to be that source of community center our members are asking for.”

Of course, being that center requires funding. In the past, Seymour Library had to shorten its open hours by two hours a day due to budget constraints. Thanks to a generous donation, this was reduced to a current decrease of one hour per day. “We will always do whatever we can to remain community and patron focused, providing the best service to everyone,” assured DeVuyst.

One indicator of Seymour Library’s importance to its communities is its continued growth. Established in 1936 when it was donated by the Seymour family, the library outgrew its original Victorian home, and its much larger building was constructed at its current location on East Avenue in Brockport. Further expansions, such as the space which now serves as the History Room, were subsequently added.

Even now, four study rooms are being built to provide quiet spaces for the community. “Libraries are no longer as quiet as they used to be,” explained DeVuyst. “They are vibrant hubs for the community.”

In addition to its many useful and educational services, Seymour Library offers many enjoyable programs each month. “We have many new and different kinds of programs,” DeVuyst said. “Aside from local history, my arts, crafts and skill learning programs are the most popular. Our members are so open to expressing themselves artistically. That is what stands out to me the most: the talent and the creativity of the patrons we serve.”

While Seymour Library provides many participation opportunities for children and adults, Abby DeVuyst pointed out its “huge, vibrant” teen population. “This is unusual for many libraries,” she said. “We have many teen volunteers, and during the summer months, many of them give up their time freely to help with children’s programming and around the library. In the fall, they start up groups, help in the library, do community service other activities.

“Coming up in October, we will introduce Draw Down, a comprehensive plan created in a think tank by geniuses to address our global warming situation,” said DeVuyst. “I attended the program myself, and it was the first time I left such a seminar feeling hopeful.” October will also usher in Haunted Ghost Stories of the
