Will lavender grow in and around small stones if it has some soil under it?

Lavender is a sun worshiper, loves heat, and grows best in infertile, welldrained and slightly alkaline soil. Of course, lavender plants need soil, but will do just fine in an area where there are many small stones. Avoid heavy clay soil that does not drain well.

Plant in the spring when danger of frost has passed, mixing some compost into the soil to get your plants off to a good start. Some lavender growers recommend putting a layer of crushed oyster shells or limestone

in the bottom of the planting hole to improve drainage and to increase the alkalinity of the soil. Also, some suggest mulching around lavender plants with pea sized gravel. The theme, good drainage is essential. Fertilize sparingly or you will get leaves at the expense of flowers. Lavender thrives in dry conditions so be careful not to overwater to prevent root rot. Also, dry heat helps to release lavender’s strong and wonderful fragrance and because of that aroma, deer generally stay away.

Garden stores generally stock two cultivars, ‘Hidcote’ with silvery foliage and deep purple flowers and ‘Munstead’ with green foliage and a violet or blue-purple flower. In the past few years, one called ‘SuperBlue’ has become more popular and is one that I find does very well here. It is a little shorter and heavier blooming cultivar than the two mentioned above.

Rare Disease Causes Hard-to-Diagnose Rash ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was diagnosed with lymphomatoid papulosis. It’s not a bad case, but it’s enough to make me worry. I know it’s rare for this to turn into cancer, but there is always a chance. Doctors often misdiagnose it, but thankfully I have the best pathologist in the world. My daughter is being treated with UVB light, which worked in the past, but now is not helping. I don’t want to do methotrexate. I worry about every dot that pops up on her, and if it doesn’t go away, I think the worst. -- M.W.M. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease, most common in people in their 40s, but can happen in children and older adults as well. The cause is unknown, and although a virus is suspected, it hasn’t been found. It is not contagious.

The rash of LyP is not specific and needs to be confirmed through biopsy. Spots are relatively large (but less than an inch), and usually red but with a white center that can turn black. The rash comes and goes. A skilled pathologist in combination with an experienced dermatologist is necessary to make the diagnosis.

Adults are treated with methotrexate if the lesions are in a cosmetically important area, especially the face. UVA light is better studied than UVB light, especially in children, but an expert would be the most appropriate to recommend the best treatment.

Your concern about cancer is understandable. Rates of associated cancer -- specifically, lymphoma, a blood and bone marrow cancer -- have been reported in 5% to 50% of people with LyP. Unfortunately, apart from people with a specific gene rearrangement, there’s no way yet known to predict who is likely to get lymphoma nor any way of preventing it. She will need to be vigilant. Fortunately, the lymphomas, if they do develop, are usually effectively treated.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently opened up some stored tuna that my son had saved for me. He loves to hunt his own food.

When I ate it, I realized that when he had gone to Alaska, he had not only hunted tuna but also black bear. He had used the black bear grease to cure the tuna. I was mortified that he had used a protected animal to preserve his tuna. I reluctantly ate it anyway.

Now, I am worried about my health. Will anything happen to me health-wise because I have eaten the grease from a black bear from Alaska? The bear was wild, so could it have had a disease, like rabies? I’m sure it has never been vaccinated. -- Anon.

ANSWER: Black bears are hunted in many states, and although it is regulated (you need a license) in Alaska, they are not a protected species under the Endangered Species Act. Black bears are hunted for both sport and meat. The major health risk from consuming bear meat is trichinella, a muscle parasite.

The meat must be heated to a high temperature to be sure of killing the parasite. Grease from the bear should not have trichinella risk. Another concern is rabies. Rabies is possible but rare in bears. I doubt it could be transmitted from grease, though, as rabies virus lives in nervous tissue, not fat.

In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic.

Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper.

Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender.

Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks.

Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender.

To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook.

Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired.

Texas Pete Brow n Sugar Glazed Bacon (Family Features) 1/3 cup Texas Pete original hot sauce 1 pound thick-cut bacon 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon brow n sugar (for finishing) Preheat oven to 350∞F. Lay bacon in even layer on parchment lined sheet tray.

M ix 1/2 cup brow n sugar & hot sauce together. Using pastry brush, brush thin even layer of mixture over top of bacon & bake 10 minutes. Remove tray from oven & brush bacon w /glaze; flip bacon over & brush w /glaze. Return tray to oven for another 10 minutes.

Repeat every 10 minutes for one hour, pouring off excess bacon fat as needed.

Sprinkle top of bacon w /1 tablespoon of brow n sugar before last 10 min. of baking. Watch bacon carefully near the end of bake time as it w ill begin to brow n quickly. Remove from oven; let cool for 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

Fostering a Pet vs. Adopting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the difference between pet adoption and fostering? -- Jess in Knoxville DEAR JESS: An adopted pet is going to his or her forever home, a successful story every animal shelter wants to see replay again and again. But many pets aren’t quite ready to be adopted. They may be too young. They may be recovering from abuse and injuries. They may need to be observed to figure out what home environment is best for them.

Sometimes, a shelter runs out of space. And some rescue organizations don’t have shelter facilities at all.

In all these circumstances, this is where foster families come into play.

A foster is a temporary arrangement, either for a predetermined amount of time or until a pet is adopted.

Rather than being stuck in a chilly kennel with little interaction, a foster pet stays in a warm, loving home -- an arrangement that vastly reduces their stress and helps them heal.

Some pets are never ready for adoption and remain a foster for the rest of their life. Others are adopted by the foster family if approved by the rescue organization.

(NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.

We adopted Nyah from Buffalo Pug Rescue in January 2019 and she is fitting in with our family just perfectly! She enjoys hiking, kayaking, playing fetch with Bo and Luke and going for ice cream!

What do we know?

Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control.

Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.

Who (or what) is at risk?

While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general.

However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.

On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July.

We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.

You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s.

United Way of Genesee County: Generosity through Crisis

I

n the communities of Genesee County, like so many communities across our nation, COVID-19 has economically impacted families.

Some lost their jobs, often waiting extended periods for unemployment insurance, and others faced reduced hours during the shutdown. During this challenging time, many of those in need have looked to the nonprofits supported by the United Way of Genesee County for much needed support.

“There has been fear,” said Tammy Hathaway, Executive Director of the United Way of Genesee County (UWGC). “There was fear of how to pay the bills and fear of how to feed their families. Those who hadn’t needed to access services before didn’t know how to do so, and those who did weren’t coming out to resources like food pantries for fear of being exposed to the virus.” Suddenly and across socioeconomic statuses, people found themselves all facing the same challenges.

Hathaway and others working with the United Way of Genesee County rolled up their sleeves and focused on helping directly. “From experience, I can say that those of us who lead nonprofit work might spend a good majority of our time in the office, procuring funding, but now, we were all volunteers for each other,” she recalled. “This united us as never before. Especially at the beginning, we were all working together, bringing food to each other, swapping needed items and making sure all the needs in the community were being met.”

This hasn’t been the only benefit. Hathaway has also been making new connections. “I delivered eggs and milk to two food pantries today that I didn’t even know existed a month ago, and they were right in the western part of our county in which I had been looking for ones!” she exclaimed. “While a lot of our efforts tend to be centrally located because Batavia is our city, we have now blanketed the entire county with services of some sort.”

Dedicated volunteers and generous community members have made these advances possible. “Many of the nonprofits which directly serve households have remained open during this time, even with volunteers on the brink of exhaustion from working so many additional hours,” shared Hathaway. She explained that those organizations listed on the UWGC website are those which are supported by its Community Impact Fund, and several others are supported through specially designated funds sent to the UWGC, as well.

Increased need also requires increased donation. According to Hathaway, that hasn’t been a problem. “I have said it many times; we are like no other county that I have experienced,” she praised. “The community was immediately very responsive. If I expressed a need, it was quickly met. People were constantly asking what we needed and finding ways to get it to us.”

The work has been much more physical than usual. “Before COVID-19, I worked a lot more with my brain, and I looked forward

Nonprofits like the Salvation Army have taken on new roles in the community. “The Salvation Army has been administering housing stability monies from United Way and has worked with Foodlink and the USDA to plan food distributions and to keep food pantries full,” Hathaway stated. “The community has rallied around them and other food pantries like that of Community Action.”

As Genesee County moves forward through the reopening process, the influx of needs it has been experiencing is expected to gradually subside, but for the UWGC, these needs are their reality.

“My hope is that people remember our nonprofit groups and the good work they are doing now and realize that these are services many people still need year-round,” said Hathaway. “Many of these nonprofit groups rely on us, and the services many provide are critical. Please consider donating through workplace campaigns, individual pledges or even with necessary goods and volunteer service.”

Looking back, Hathaway is deeply moved at all Genesee County communities have done. “I don’t know how to thank the community enough,” she said. “There has been just a remarkable outpouring of help and support from the people here, and I am so proud to be a part of these communities.”

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.

There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7

Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Cancer and COVID-19

The COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 caught many people, particularly those in the western hemisphere, off guard. As the virus spread, the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout North America and Europe changed dramatically and seemingly overnight, prompting many to wonder if they or their loved ones were going to get sick.

No one was thought to be immune to COVID-19, though many people were unfortunately believed to be more vulnerable to the disease than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people with serious chronic medical conditions are at the greatest risk of getting sick from COVID-19.

The American Cancer Society notes that cancer patients, like groups with an elevated risk of getting sick from COVID-19, must do all they can to avoid being exposed to the virus. That’s because the immune systems of cancer patients, particularly those in active chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant patients, can be severely weakened. In fact, in March 2020 officials with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center warned that early data from China and Italy, two countries which experienced early and widespread outbreaks of the disease, indicated that cancer patients would be at increased risk of getting the virus.

Are all cancer patients at risk?

Dr. Steve Pergram, the medical director of infection prevention at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said that patients with blood malignancies are most at risk for COVID-19.

Blood malignancies include non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. While people with these forms of cancer may be most at risk of getting COVID-19, it’s important to note that all cancer patients, including those who recently concluded treatment, are vulnerable. Those who concluded treatment should know that the aftereffects of treatment can linger long after treatment programs have ended, and those aftereffects may continue to compromise patients’ immune systems.

Keep Your Spirits Up Depending where we live, many of us are still in lockdown. Still, there are ways to keep our spirits up.

Plants can make all the difference in how we feel in our environment. Check your local nursery's website for small plants you can either have delivered or pick up at the curb. Some of the easiest to grow are pothos, spider plant and philodendron. Beware, however, if you have pets. Be sure you can either hang up your plant or put it up on a bookcase where the pet can't reach it.

Books we enjoyed a long time ago can take us back to a time and place that was calm and safe. Look on your own bookshelves or consider getting an e-reader if you don't want to take a chance going into your own library, assuming it's open.

Baking can fill the house with lovely smells. Since finding flour is impossible in many parts of the country, look online for hundreds of recipes that don't require flour. No-flour banana bread, flourless chocolate cake ... you can even make oatmeal muffins. Just be certain you can acquire all the ingredients before you set your heart on making a recipe.

Zoom is the online conference program that so many companies are using for business meetings. We can learn Zoom, too, and stay in touch with family and friends if we have a computer or device with a camera. Explore the basic free version of Zoom. You'll be limited to 40 minutes in group meetings, with no limit on one-toone meetings. Your first step will be to read online instructions and get comfortable with the steps to set up a connection. What can cancer patients do to protect themselves from COVID-19?

Cancer patients should embrace the safety protocols recommended by the CDC, including social distancing measures and limiting direct contact with other people. Seniors in cancer treatment should take advantages of opportunities to limit their exposure to COVID-19, such as visiting grocery stores during seniors-only hours and opting to participate in digital religious services instead of in-person services. In addition, patients can work with their cancer care teams to devise ways to continue receiving treatment without elevating their risk of exposure to COVID-19.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day.

While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day.

1. Embrace organization tools.

Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations.

2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients.

3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction.

4. Reconsider your commute.

Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day.

Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
