Comfort Care Homes rely on donations. Suzanne’s has no paid staff and we do not receive any income from insurance, medicare, etc. Churches, businesses, and individuals have been so generous to us. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water.

Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Sheltering Pets During a Disaster

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just moved to a new part of the country, where natural disasters like floods are more frequent than I’m used to.

When checking out available emergency services, I found out that there is no emergency shelter nearby that allows pets.

What can I do? -- Charlie B., via email DEAR CHARLIE: Knowing ahead of time what emergency services are available in a disaster is an excellent move.

You won’t have as many unpleasant surprises during the high stress of a natural disaster. But it is a bummer that the local disaster shelter doesn’t accept pets.

First, locate the nearest disaster shelter that does allow you to shelter with your pet.

Develop a contingency plan for evacuating to this shelter, if possible. Another option is to identify pet-friendly hotels within an hour or two of your home; if you need to leave for more than a day, these may be an option.

Next, find out if there are designated shelters just for pets during or after a natural disaster. You wouldn’t be able to stay with your pets, but they would be safe.

Third, get engaged with the local government and animal shelter. Talk to your new veterinarian, too. Find out if there’s a local emergency management office and call them. Are any plans in place for taking care of pets in a disaster? If not, ask for steps to be taken to include this contingency.

During California’s wildfires in 2018, there were very few facilities just for animals, and no shelters allowed them. The need was so great that empty strip malls were repurposed to care for pets and abandoned animals. Stephen Michael Ditzel April 17, 2020 West Pueblo, CO/Batavia, NY: Stephen Michael Ditzel, age 29, passed April 17 in West Pueblo, Colorado. Stephen was born September 26, 1990 in the City of Batavia and was a graduate of Batavia High School. He leaves behind his mother, Mary Ditzel; father, William Ditzel; sisters, Christine and Tina Ditzel; nephews, Willie, Malcolm, Brody, Malik and Marshall; and nieces, Christine, Brooke, Faith and Paralee.

Stephen was a free spirit who loved to travel and spend time exploring the natural world, a passion that led him to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. He enjoyed creating music, studying botany and horticulture, exercising and watching documentaries. For several years he resided in the small town of Crestone, Colorado, nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Range, where he pursued his love of exploration and desire to meet new people who shared his interests and aspirations.

Stephen will be missed dearly by his family and friends who recall his humble, kind and compassionate demeanor and willingness to lend a helping hand. His family encourages all to honor and remember his life in every mountain they climb, every trail they walk, every smile they offer to a stranger, every hand they reach out to shake and every unknown road they choose to travel.

A procession to honor Stephen will take place Sunday, May 17 at 1pm beginning on North Lyon Street in the City of Batavia and ending at the Genesee County Park.

Thank you to local school districts for working tirelessly seven days a week to provide learning activities and support to children and parents. The decision to keep our kids out of school has caused tremendous sadness for teachers. We hoped NYS would allow us to finish our school year face-to-face in class with our kids. Teachers are putting extended time into preparing lessons, creating activities that can connect to curriculum, attending virtual meetings with staff, training themselves on the digital environment, volunteering to pass out food and supplies

so judgmental. Also, to the person complaining about people going out in public, you are out in public as well.

You should not be so judgmental about a person that needs to go to work. They might not have the luxury of being able to stay home.

Filing for unemployment is not an option now because of all the people who are out of work. They may have a family they need to feed, a house to pay for, bills to keep the gas and electricity on. People are becoming so nasty anymore. If someone must work, then that is what they must do, if someone must go to the store, do not be rude about what they are buying.

I want to thank the Farmington TOPS for their above and beyond efforts for maintaining COVID-19 precautions and sanitizing. They wipe down every cart after use and have areas for cleaned carts.

They wash the carts after they are brought back inside. This is time consuming and a lot of work. There is tape on the floor at registers to help give people the 6ft distancing. Isles and spaces are much more open. They have some dedicated shopping hours for seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Like many other stores, they close early have to

work, March 15th. I am selfemployed and have no income.

I cannot work under new Pause order. Also, I have preexisting health issues that prevent me from taking an essential worker job. After many calls to complete an application, I received a call on April 17th. It took 20 minutes for the lady to say that I am approved, and I will get money in a few days, but I must recertify by Sunday. I did so only to be told I cannot recertify because my application is not complete, and that I must call the other number. I have called many times so far and have been hung up on each time after the systems says to hold. If it were not for food pantries, I think a lot of New Yorkers would starve to death! Each day that passes is one day closer to my company going bankrupt.

Shame on you. People put a lot of time and love into the one spot they can go and visit their loved one. If it ever happened to you, how would feel? The grave sites of loved ones are so private and personal to whoever visits, and to think someone would destroy their love and hard work is sad and unbelievable. It is against the law, and you can only hope that no one saw you and will not go to the police with the information. With all that is going on in the world right now, we have people like you doing more destruction to this world in just another way.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old white male. I take one 20-mg pravastatin per day to manage my cholesterol. One of the side effects is joint pain. Are you aware of a substitute that does not have this joint pain side effect? -- H.L. ANSWER: Statins are one of the most common medicines used, and although they have relatively few side effects, so many people take them that there are many reported untoward effects.

Muscle aches are common. Muscle breakdown is serious and, fortunately, rare. But joint aches are not a common side effect. In the package insert, “arthritis” is listed in less than 1% of people.

Of all the statins, pravastatin tends to have relatively few side effects. It is metabolized differently from how the others are, so have a discussion with your doctor about taking a different statin, such as atorvastatin (Lipitor). Lipitor is much more potent than pravastatin (Pravachol), so the dose you will need is likely to be much lower. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion on screening for ovarian cancer in a woman with a family history (in my case, a sister)? One gynecologist stressed an annual ultrasound, while the other discouraged me from doing so. I am worried that if I wait until symptoms develop, the cancer might be pretty advanced.

-- W. ANSWER: I really understand why people with increased risk for ovarian cancer are interested in screening. Unfortunately, we still don’t have any screening tests, such as an ultrasound or CA-125 blood test, that are good enough to recommend yet. I hope this changes soon. Promising work is progressing.

Consider genetic testing for a familial cancer syndrome, such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome. People with one of these cancer syndromes are at high enough risk that screening may be of benefit, and there are ongoing studies to help identify the best strategy. Speak to your gynecologist about a referral to a genetic counselor. If you test negative for these genetic syndromes, you are at lower risk (but unfortunately, even low-risk women still may get ovarian cancer).

You certainly should be vigilant for even mild symptoms of ovarian cancer; these are nonspecific and may include abdominal discomfort, bloating or swelling. Urinary urgency (a sense of needing to get to the bathroom right away) also should prompt a visit to your gynecologist, more so than in people without a family history. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible that when immersed in water, you absorb it through your skin? Whenever I spend more than 30 minutes in the pool, I later have to urinate more than when I don’t spend time in the water. Can the absorbed water travel to kidneys?

Can the chemicals added to pool water do some damage? -- E.M. ANSWER: Water is not absorbed to any appreciable effect when the body is immersed. The reason you urinate more may be due to unnoticed swallowing of pool water, which is very common in swimmers.

Don’t worry about the chlorine in pool water. The amount of chlorine is similar to or only a bit higher than most tap water, and is not enough to be dangerous. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life.

People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily.

These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility.

Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright.

Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

6 ways to prevent falls around the house

Despite all of the potential hazards around a house - from electrical issues to fire hazards to carbon monoxide - the National Home Security Alliance says that falls are the leading cause of death due to home accidents.

Falls are responsible for one-third of all home-related fatalities. Although seniors are the group most affected by falls, these types of accidents can affect anyone.

A broken bone may be a minor inconvenience for young people, but fractures are more serious for the elderly. As a result, seniors must take measures to protect themselves against falls. These steps can minimize risk at home.

1. Remove tripping hazards. Examine rooms and hallways for potential hazards, such as slippery throw rugs, floorboards that stick up, loose carpeting, or furniture that blocks walking paths. Remedy these hazards as soon as possible. Address loose floorboards and/or place nonslip materials beneath rugs.

2. Install grab bars or railings. Install grab bars in certain locations for extra stability or where someone may need leverage getting up from a seated position. They are particularly helpful near toilets and bathtubs and in stairways and hallways.

3. Stick to sensible shoes. Sensible shoes fit properly and have sturdy, nonskid soles. Avoid walking around in slippers or even in stocking feet, which are much more slippery.

4. Store items within reach. Store items that are used frequently, such as dishes, in easily accessible cabinets and other locations. This prevents having to climb or reach for them.

5. Install more lighting. Poor visibility can contribute to falls. Lighting in hallways, stairways, bathrooms, and bedrooms - even if it is a small night light - can be enough to light the way.

6. Reinforce your home’s exterior. Falls do not only occur inside. Inspect the perimeter of a property for uneven turf, holes or cracked or uneven patches of walkways. Make sure lighting is working at entryways, and check that exterior handrails are secure.

The biggest difference between reading on a tablet and reading on a Kindle is this: The Kindle has one purpose, which is reading. The screen doesn't have a glare (unlike the shiny glass on a tablet), and you can easily increase the size of the type font.

Now is the tim e to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. M any tires indicate the recom m ended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidew alls.

Cold tem peratures m ay cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on im properly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires w hen they are cold for the m ost accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also w ill im prove fuel econom y.

Exam ine the tires for tread w ear. Any uneven or abnorm al tread w ear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the w heels realigned at the very least. M echanics m ay recom m end rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 m iles, or about every six m onths for the average driver. Wheel realignm ent m ay be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road.

College Life Insights from SUNY Brockport’s President Macpherson

ife dramatically changed for many of us when COVID-19, followed by its restrictions, hit the United States. This was no less true for colleges across the country, including our own SUNY College at Brockport.

Heidi Macpherson, President of SUNY College at Brockport, shares updates about its present and glimpses into its future.

“The world changed right around the time our students were on Spring Break,” said Macpherson. “We had about ten days to transition all of our classes to an alternative delivery format.” More than 1,700 classes transitioned away from a face-to-face format, even very hands-on and interactive courses such as dance, theatre, the arts, and nursing.

“I am so impressed by the incredible creativity of our faculty as they embraced the challenge of thinking through how best to ensure our students met their learning outcomes,” she said. Several policy alterations were made for the semester, including extending the offer of Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading to students for a wider range of courses and employee telecommuting which reduced campus density dramatically.

Some college items were not able to transition. “Sadly, all of our spring and summer events were cancelled,” said Macpherson, referring to various ceremonies such as commencement ceremonies and the high school graduation ceremonies it usually hosts. The decision not to hold the college graduation ceremonies online was informed by the students themselves.

“We surveyed our graduating seniors, and the overwhelming response was that they did not want to have a virtual commencement,” stated Macpherson. “We will hold an in-person ceremony for them sometime over the next year when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we’re hosting a virtual senior class toast as a way to celebrate our seniors,” she added.

Community members thanked essential workers at the Brockport’s Big Trucks event!

Its seniors are not the only ones for whom the college is going above and beyond during these uncertain times. “We created the Golden Eagle Opportunity Fund to raise money for students in need,” said MacPherson.

“To date, we have distributed nearly $35,000 to these students.” The college is also loaning laptops to students when necessary, accommodating the just under 40 students who were unable to return home and rallying to provide for another group: study abroad students.

The College at Brockport was also called upon early in the crisis to host study abroad students in precautionary quarantine, a big challenge they embraced. “When asked to help, we said yes, and got to work immediately,” Macpherson recalled. The college had about a day and half to prepare Gordon Hall, an empty residence slated for renovation, to house these students, bringing in furniture, toiletries, linens, refrigerators, microwaves, and more.

When the students arrived, the new challenges they brought were met with incredible response by the college and surrounding communities. “We had to devise quarantine protocols – including how to monitor health and feed these students,” said MacPherson. The community support that these students received was outstanding, from dropping off requested items that students had asked for to singing happy birthday to one of the students. “I was touched and moved by our community’s generosity and spirit, and it makes me proud and honored to be part of this area,” Macpherson shared. “We received many heartfelt messages of gratitude from students after they left.”

The College at Brockport also supports its surrounding communities. “As a state institution, we feel compelled to serve the public good,” affirmed

Macpherson. “We are a college engaged with community, and one of the goals of our strategic plan, which is Building a Better Brockport.

We were able to donate a lot of PPE as a result of our commitment to public health.

Our experts are also working closely with the county and volunteering as needed.”

Additionally, the college partnered with the Village of Brockport, the Town of Sweden and the Brockport School district to collect and donate hundreds of masks, and it partnered with Foodlink to host a food-pickup. It also SUNY College at Brockport President, hosted a social distancing Heidi Macpherson event, entitled, “Brockport’s Big Trucks,” which provided hundreds of families with a safe way to get out of the house. “The smiles on children’s faces were incredible,” Macpherson reflected. “We have heard so much gratitude from our community for putting the event together. I can’t think of a better way to show our support for our community than to assist where we are able to.”

As for the future of classes and campus life, things are still unclear. “We have created a Bringing Brockport Back committee to help determine what we will look like come fall,” explained Macpherson. “We are thinking creatively, flexibly and strategically, but it won’t be business as usual as we protect the health and safety of our community.”

The college has identified three primary, possible scenarios: near normal with protocols around face coverings, frequent handwashing, increased disinfectant cleaning and social distancing; starting the semester online and then bringing students back to campus partway through; and preparing for the entire semester to be online. “Our planning is in conjunction with SUNY, New York State, and county health officials, and we will communicate with our students, faculty and staff when we know more,” stated Macpherson, adding, “The workplaces of the future may increasingly be in an online environment.”
