HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Hobbies can provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Finding the right hobby requires the consideration of a host of factors, including one’s own personality. The following are some common personality types and the hobbies they might find rewarding.

The Athlete: Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues.

My family and I are currently quarantined, too, and we’re finding online ordering of staples and pet food to be challenging.

Take stock of exactly how much dry dog food you have left -- literally measure it out cup by cup into a container. Divide the total cups by the number of scoops per day that you give your dog.

If the bag has less dry food than you’ll need for 11 more days, you can stretch it out and make sure Corky gets enough calories by combining his dry food with fresh food. Unseasoned, cooked rice and oatmeal, veggies like peas and carrots (but not onions, garlic, grapes or avocado), chicken, beef or salmon (unseasoned) are all safe and healthy options. Replace half to all the kibble per meal with a fresh alternative.

Many communities are also spinning up “helping hand” services. Check the website of your local government, online community pages and even the local library’s site to find out if you can contact someone to drop off dog food.

DID YOU KNOW? The word “prom” is short for “promenade dance,” an annual formal dance held for high school students, typically those in their junior and senior years. While the term “prom” might not be used across the globe, schools in many countries host similar dances for high school-aged students on the cusp of moving on to college. In the United Kingdom, proms did not become popular until very recently. Prior to the 21st century, secondary school students in the UK might have attended formal dances at the onset of summer to celebrate the end of a school term, while students old enough to be finishing secondary school might have attended a “Leavers Ball” to commemorate that milestone in their life. But a 2012 report in the Daily Telegraph noted than more than 85 percent of secondary schools in Britain now host school proms, which range from relatively informal gatherings to more extravagant affairs. BriPen Senior Rides was started in 2017 and is sponsored by the Town of Penfield. It is a wholly volunteer, donation-based service that seniors, without any private transportation, may request one round trip ride or two one-way rides per week. Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right.

It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick.

It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness.

I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves.

But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock.

Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Easy ways to volunteer… and give back to your community Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone.

But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System notes that research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering.

With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018.

It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. · Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. · Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. · Help adults find the right professional opportunities by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. · Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. · Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/or a local community garden. · Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. · Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free tax-preparation services. · Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. · Volunteer at an animal shelter.

enesee County couple, Becky Bartz and her husband, are foster parents in Batavia. Just over a year ago, in February 2019, Becky Bartz started the Foster Closet to help area foster families provide clothing and other necessities for the children they fostered. She knows firsthand just how much such a closet is needed.

“I have been a certified foster parent for about two and a half years,”Becky shared. “My husband and I realized just how little these children often come with. We fostered many children for short-term stays, and the need for such a closet became apparent fairly quickly. You never know what children may be coming your way and what they may or may not have.”

So, Becky created her Foster Closet and began gathering donations from people in her community. “We started collecting clothing, including socks and underwear, baby supplies, towels, wash clothes, burp rags, shoes-the essentials,” she explained. “Now, I know that if, for example, a six-year-old little boy is sent to us, we have everything we need for him, and that is what I want for these other foster parents, as well.”

There is always need. “When children are taken into foster care, the process can be very quick,” stated Becky. “Kids often need the basics like clothes, possibly even shoes, winter coats, snow pants, hairbrushes, toothbrushes-things that you and I take for granted. I go through the donations myself and keep only clean, unstained clothing because if I would not give an item to my best friend to wear, I will not give it to these children. They deserve good clothes, too.”

The impact of being given these items when they arrive is undeniable. “If they get a new pair of shoes or a shirt, they are ecstatic about that, and it warms and breaks your heart at the same time. In general, these kids do not have things that are their own like a stuffed animal or a Becky Bartz’s Foster Closet blanket. Now, they have an item that includes baby gear! belongs to them, that will go with them from their starting point to their ending point and provide a sense of security through all these transitions.”

“We also have a group called the Quilting Guild which is a group of women who make blankets and quilts which they donate to be sent with these children. That way, when they go home, I can give them a quilt to keep wherever they go, something they can say, “This is mine, and no one is going to take it away from me.’”

Along with providing for and reaching out to children who enter foster care, Becky also hopes to ease these transitions for foster parents. It seems to be working. “The Foster Closet has meant a lot to the families we have been able to help; it has been a relief,” said Becky. “Our home finder for Genesee County has shared about us, and our Facebook page mentions this, but my word of mouth can only go so far. I want people

to know that if they are in Genesee County and have their board certification to foster, I can help them, even if they just need one thing. Becky Bartz noted that the Foster Closet was fairly full since she is currently running it out of her home. “I would love to find a place to keep all of these items so that foster families could come and ‘shop’ for whatever they need,” she said. “That is one of our biggest needs right now.”

Becky also pointed out that foster families willing to help these children in need are in short supply, as well. “Our need for foster parents is always great,” she stated. “Even if you are not a foster parent, you can provide temporary respite for those who are, which is so helpful. Foster parents take in children out of the goodness of our hearts, but we need a break, and we have to find someone certified to watch the children we foster.”

I do not understand why some people must sit in their apartments and watch the coming and going of their neighbors or take it upon themselves to play parking lot police. I think that there are some people who are not meant for complex living. Just because they are a frustrated, miserably old woman. Please do not take it out on your neighbors.

I am sad that our Village DPW does not fill potholes. They are not plowing snow nor working in parks nor tree trimming. The least they could do is fill the potholes.

This is to the police officers who read the paper. I understand you need to concentrate resources in larger areas like the cities, but on the country roads, people are literally (and I am not exaggerating) going 100 mph down the roads. I was driving going 60 mph and got passed by two people going over 80 mph at least. This happens every day now because they think they will not get caught, and I, for one, am sick of hearing the rev of engines going up and down my road and the main road.

With a son in a group home and other relatives in rehab and senior facilities, we so appreciate those who care for our dear ones, keeping them safe and healthy. We thank those who go above and beyond normal duties to keep our son in a Heritage Christian Home, actively engaged in jobs and artwork to keep him stimulated in an at-home environment, along with photos and reports on his well-being. A million thanks to our direct care pros who are on the front lines like other essential services such as groceries, pharmacies, and transportation as well as to our older son who, among millions, deliver tons of stuff to our homes and businesses.

A big and grateful thank you to the man who was in front of me at the Tim Hortons in Batavia on Lewiston Rd. on April 11th, 2020. He paid for my bill. I was there picking up gift certificates for my family for Easter. Little did he know he not only paid for me but for my family. So altogether you paid for eight grateful people. I know that God will bless you for your kindness, and I cannot say thank you enough. Stay safe and healthy and thank you again.

This needs to be addressed. To all the people ignoring the rules and going out, what are you trying to prove? Good for you; you are risking others catching the virus.

People pack into the markets and ignore the six-foot rule as well. I am disgusted that you who still go out to gatherings publicly brag in line for others to hear how ‘cool and defiant’ you are being. I literally heard a woman scoff and say, “Well, I’m not staying home.”

Guess what? You and the people like you are the reason we need alerts to our phone telling us to stay in. Thanks for lessening the chances of spreading it. Stay home.

It does not matter where some live, whether it be in a condo, or a complex apartment, or in a house.

Some people are just a piece of work. They think they own the neighborhood. They monitor everything...and everyone. It is truly sad that they do not have a life that they resort to being like they are. They become the town criers as it were. Since they have no friends or family that really want anything to do with them, they take on the job of poking their noses in everybody else’s business. That makes them think that they are important, when in actuality, no one wants to be around them, nor do they respect them. Every neighborhood has someone like that, I guess. As hard as it may be, do not let it bother you. They love it when it does. Stay well.

Regarding Painted Rocks. I saw one of them the other day, and it was so adorable! But from more than 10 feet away, it does look like another piece of trash. I agree that, at the park while enjoying nature, it is nice to see nature and not what looks like trash on the ground, even if it is cute close up.

MEN CAN GET MANICURES FOR THEIR WEDDING DAYS, TOO A variety of wedding day cosmetic preparations are geared toward the brideto-be. Gentlemen generally limit their wedding pampering to a haircut and possibly a self-tanning product to have a golden glow in their wedding photos.

As social norms continue to relax and guys grow more comfortable and confident taking care of their skin, hair and bodies, the list of services men undergo in advance of special occasions may widen. One service that many men have already embraced is the manicure.

Manicures neaten the fingernails and treat the skin and cuticles of the fingers and can be just as beneficial for men as women. In fact, male-geared hand and foot grooming have already sprouted a niche market, including the Hammer & Nails Grooming for Guys franchise that was featured on the popular show “Shark Tank.”

Nail technicians can help guys achieve a clean look and alert men to possible underlying health issues present on their hands and feet. According to Dr. David E. Bank, a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, technicians are trained to recognize possible fungus and other infections within the nails.

Depending on his profession, a man’s hands may be on display and the appearance of those hands can help close deals or present a more professional look. Manicures can help men achieve that. They’re also ideal for special occasions like weddings, when guys want to be groomed to perfection. GQ magazine advises that the occasional professional manicure can offer nice, even nails without out-of-control cuticles - no polish or gel tips necessary.

First-timers may be hesitant to give manicures a try. While salon services can differ, here’s what a typical manicure will entail.

• Nails are cut and filed.

• Hands will be soaked in warm water and/or oil to soften skin and cuticles.

• Cuticles are pushed back or trimmed.

• Moisturizer may be applied, and hands are given a brief massage.

• Clear polish can be used if desired. However, a thorough buffing also can create a healthy shine to the nail.

Men may want to visit nail salons during off-peak times if they are shy about requesting services.

blood test) to herpes 1 and 2, can that person be a blood donor?

Could a person catch herpes by sitting on a toilet seat that has been used by an infected person? Are scientists working on a cure for herpes? -- Anon.

ANSWER: There remains a stigma against people with genital herpes, which is almost always caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, most people with genital herpes will not have major disruptions to their lives provided they take some precautions.

First off, a person with herpes simplex virus type 1 (about half of the population between ages 18-49, higher in older people) or HSV-2 (about 12% of the same population) certainly can donate blood. Second, being exposed doesn’t guarantee infection. Third, blood testing is not perfect. Fourth, getting any kind of sexually transmitted infection from a toilet seat is very unlikely. Herpes viruses have a very difficult time getting through intact skin, which is why most exposures come through mucus membranes, especially of the genitals and mouth.

There is a type of herpes (usually HSV-1, occasionally HSV-2) in wrestlers, called herpes gladiatorum or “mat herpes,” and it can be transmitted from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially if the skin is raw or chafed.

Once a person has herpes of either variety, there is no cure. The virus stays in the nerve cells. There is extensive work being done both on preventing transmission and curing existing infections, but herpes viruses are very good at escaping the immune system. This makes herpes difficult to treat. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Should a person be concerned about serious side effects from long-term use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: That’s a very good point, and one I did not highlight.

“Dumping syndrome” refers to bile being delivered to the intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. It isn’t common, fortunately, and I, too, have found that cholestyramine can be very effective, in addition to eating smaller, more-frequent meals. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable.

But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice.

“Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. UNDERSTAND HARDINESS ZONES BEFORE PLANTING Gardening benefits the environment in myriad ways. Maintaining natural landscapes and preserving green spaces can reduce the collective carbon footprint of the human race. Trees, flowers and other greenery filter the air and create welcoming habitats for all species of animals and insects.

Many home gardeners set out each spring to create landscapes that cater to all of the senses. But choosing plants that are unlikely to thrive in certain climates can lead to dissatisfaction and premature plant demise and may require gardeners to use more fertilizers, pesticides and other not-so-Earth-friendly techniques to help plants thrive.

One of the more important steps gardeners can take before spring arrives is to educate themselves about plant hardiness zones. Hardiness zones are defined by the average climatic conditions of the region and are broken down into various zones. The USDA Hardiness Zone map divides North America into 13 separate zones. Each zone is marked by 10 F incremental differences from the last zone. In some versions of the map, each zone is further divided into “a” and “b” regions.

The National Gardening Association says the USDA Hardiness Zone Map was revised in 2012. The latest version was jointly developed by the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Group. To help develop the new map, the USDA and Oregon State University requested that horticultural and climatic experts review the zones in their geographic areas. As a result, the zone boundaries in the 2012 edition of the map have shifted in many areas. Canada’s Hardiness Zone map, updated in 2010, uses nine different zones.

Zone maps are tools that show where permanent landscape plants can adapt. Home gardeners who are looking for shrubs or perennials to last year after year should recognize that such plants must tolerate year-round conditions, including the lowest and highest temperatures and the amount of precipitation. Snow cover and humidity also can impact a plant’s propensity to thrive.

While zone maps are not perfect, they can be useful in planning and ensuring the survival of future gardens. Plant and seed manufacturer Burpee says that other factors to consider that also affect the viability of plants include wind, moisture and soil conditions. The company offers an interactive zone finder on their website that will indicate the hardiness zone as well as average first and last frost dates. Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements.

Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true.

However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone.

Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look.

Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands.

Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish.

Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers.

Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward.

Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood.

This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions.

Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color.

Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time.

Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.
