IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

Empowering Girls Through Worth More Nation: The Inspiring Journey of Sandy Arena

“You can get wrapped up in yourself, but when you serve others, you find joy.” – Sandy Arena

In a world where self-centeredness o en prevails, Sandy Arena stands as a beacon of selflessness and empowerment. Overcoming her own struggles, Sandy has transformed her life into a message of hope and a ministry of empowerment. Now happily married with three children, Sandy was recognized in 2009 as one of the 175 Empowered Women in Rochester by the Rochester Genesee Valley Club. Her journey from childhood sexual abuse trauma and years of instability to becoming a celebrated advocate for young girls is a testament to the transformative power of faith and determination.

Sandy went to school for communications and worked in journalism a er college. She is an author and freelance writer, as well as photographer, filmmaker, and former fitness instructor. But her true calling lies in being a mentor and cheerleader for young girls impacted by foster care and trauma. Recognizing the crucial need for these girls to realize their selfworth for their well-being and their future, Sandy founded Worth More Nation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering them through fashion and pageantry.

For Sandy, “Empowerment is finding your inner sparkle and inner power. Some of us do less than we can. We are not rising to our God-given destinies because we are stuck. We don’t see ourselves as God sees us. Empowerment is seeing yourself differently, and you do have the power to achieve and walk into the destiny you’ve been created for.”

rough sharing her own story of healing and resilience, she inspires others to see themselves differently and embrace their potential. Sandy appreciates the power of storytelling through movement and opened a faith-based dance school when her daughter was 13 (and her daughter took over the school a er college). Sandy wrote Yahweh Ballet: Learning to Dance by Faith, and produced the film, Arise Sweet Sarah, about early child loss, abortion, and adoption. Sandy reflects that she’s thankful her husband’s biological mother chose adoption, or else the Arena family would not exist today.

Worth More Nation events require community service and girls to stand for a cause they value. Sandy’s own daughter completed 2500 hours of community service in her ten years in the pageant. Pageants build confidence, with encouragers writing compliments for each girl on stage, and the girls take home a packet of compliments from the event.

Every girl is crowned Miss Worth More Nation, receives a banner, and is fitted for a gown and cocktail dress at the organization’s Fancy Frock Closet, full of donated prom, homecoming, mother-of-thebride, and wedding gowns. Participants attend a Queens’ luncheon with upli ing speakers, gi bags, and giveaways. Every girl has the opportunity to feel beautiful and confident, regardless of their background.

At these pageants, Sandy collaborates with her daughter’s dance company to create immersive experiences that blend storytelling with fashion at these pageants, further amplifying the message of empowerment.

Sandy Arena’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and service. Her dedication to empowering young girls and fostering a community of support and encouragement is not just admirable but essential in today’s world. As she continues to watch these girls blossom and thrive, Sandy’s legacy of empowerment grows stronger with each life she touches.

Sandy also reflects that she experienced such unstable times when she should have been in foster care, and she wants to give the second book she is currently writing, I’m Not at Girl Anymore, to the girls she works with to let them know God helped heal her.

Worth More Nation helps girls rise up and find their voices. Every girl is celebrated as a queen, receiving not just a crown, but also a sense of validation and encouragement. Mentors share their own stories of triumph over trauma and remind the girls that their voices matter and they are not alone in their journey.

For more information about Worth More Nation and Sandy’s work, visit worthmorenation.com, sandyarena.com, lifeworkmedia.org, or call or text Sandy at 585-350-9012.

PAW’S CORNER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER:

my cat Flicker is already scratching himself silly with fleas! He has terrible skin reactions to flea bites. How can I get rid of them?

DEAR JESSE: Flea infestations are awful, aren’t they? As the seasons change and the weather warms up, flea activity rises, and pet owners start seeing more evidence of fleas on their pets and around their homes.

Fleas aren’t just annoying. ey can carry diseases that are transmissible to pets and humans. Tapeworms and cat scratch disease are just two of the potential ills that a flea infestation can bring into your home.

Tackle a flea problem head-on, and don’t wait -- because it will continue to get worse as the summer approaches.

Because of Flicker’s allergic reaction to flea bites, he needs direct treatment to repel fleas and prevent them from latching on to his fur again. Talk to his veterinarian about the most effective flea treatments. For example, a monthly or quarterly topical flea treatment may be a good option. Oral medication -- as pills or chewables -- is also very effective. e vet may also recommend medication to clear up his current skin issues.

Reduce the risk of another flea infestation by making your home difficult for fleas to exist in.

--Have your home treated for fleas by a pest control service.

--Pick up clutter from the floor and replace any plush or feltedtoys with new ones.

--Vacuum twice a week to pick up fleas and their eggs.

--Repair or replace damaged window and door screens.

--Remove any debris piles near your home, and shi wood piles farther away.

What does the word Easter mean?

Another theory su ests that the word ‘Easter’ originated from the German word for ‘East,’ also meaning dawn.

SHOULD I GET DENTURES OR IMPLANTS

One or more missing teeth can be replaced with either dentures or implants. When choosing between them, factors to consider are age, jawbone density, comfort, dental hygiene habits, and price. Implants are significantly more expensive than dentures, but they function like permanent teeth and last much longer. Implant roots (called posts) are placed in the jawbone, so it must be healthy enough to support them. Dentures are an option regardless of jawbone health, and they can be used to replace rows of missing teeth or just a few missing teeth. They look like natural teeth but must be secured to the gums with a special adhesive. They also require more daily maintenance than implants, which are maintained like natural teeth.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to help you weigh the pros and

cons of both dentures and implants. We know that what’s best for one person may not be the same for another. With the many options available today to help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, we’re here to help you make the right decision for you, your lifestyle, and your oral health. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre; please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment. We accept most insurances.

P.S. In addition to dentures and implants, dental bridges, temporary partial dentures, and snap-in dentures are also an option for filling the gap between missing teeth in some patients.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

Makes 4 servings

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Lone Star Tick Bites Cause Alpha-Gal Syndrome

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was recently diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). I live in the country, but I do not remember having a tick on me. My husband and I are very cautious and always check for them. I am struggling to understand what exactly are my symptoms, and what I can and cannot eat. I don’t know if I am someone who can have dairy or not.

The biggest challenge seems to be eating out. If I order chicken, fish or vegetables and they are cooked on the same grill as meat, then they are not safe to eat due to cross contamination. Also, dairy, lard and whey are in many food items.

Is there a specialist I should consult? My doctor seems to know about some of this, but is unable to answer many of my questions. Any information you can share would be helpful.

-- S.N.

ANSWER: AGS is an allergy to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, a carbohydrate allergen found in all mammalian meats, such as beef, pork and lamb. The allergy can be serious as people develop symptoms, including various syndromes like skin itching and rashes; gastrointestinal symptoms; and even anaphylaxis, a severe allergy syndrome of cardiovascular collapse.

These reactions are delayed compared to other typical allergic responses, with people often developing symptoms the night after consuming meat -- about two to six hours after consumption. A blood test for alpha-gal allergies can confirm the diagnosis.

These symptoms usually begin after getting bitten multiple times by a Lone Star tick. The tick has alpha-gal in its saliva, which triggers the sensitivity. Many medical professionals are unaware of this newly described condition (40% reported never having heard of the syndrome), which can prevent a diagnosis from being made in a timely fashion.

Because the condition is new, there are some factors that we don’t really understand about it, like why some people tolerate muscle meat from an animal but react strongly to organ meat. There just aren’t answers to some of the questions that you might be asking. For example, milk, whey and gelatin sensitivity have been described with AGS, but not lard (at least that I could find).

Sometimes a person tolerates cooked meat but is intolerant of raw (or barely cooked) meat. Some people lose the allergy over time (usually a few years), but additional tick bites may bring it back.

The ideal specialist in this case is an allergist. You should certainly have and know how to use an epinephrine injector in case of a severe reaction.

***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to

WEDDING INVITATIONS

Created just for your big day, we've put together sets of stunning wedding invitations to perfectly match your style.

GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY IDEAS

Soak up the city lights. Big cities tend to clear out on summer weekends, which can make this an ideal time to visit. City visitors won’t have to contend with the sizable crowds that descend on metropolises in winter, when indoor entertainment is in high demand. That means savvy travelers also may find discounts on live theater and local concerts. It also won’t be as difficult to book reservations at the latest culinary hotspots, particularly for travelers who book early.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE DURING SPRING BREAK

It’s that time of year again when thousands of college students and young adults will flock to the far reaches of the world for spring break. Wherever your travels take you, it’s best to adopt the Boy Scout’s motto,”Be Prepared.”

1. Arrive safely. Traffic death rates are three times higher at night than during the day. This means an all-night drive to Florida or any other sunny locale is not a good idea. If you can’t avoid night driving, have someone stay up to talk you.

2. Secure your hotel room.Make sure your door is locked and important belongings like passports and wallets are in the safe.

3. Ensure you know the name of your hotel. Memorize the hotel’s address, and take a card to give cab drivers (especially if you don’t know the language).

4. Protect your personal information. Don’t tell new acquaintances your hotel name or room number. You never know who has innocent (or notso-innocent) intentions.

5. Employ the buddy system. Never leave a party with a stranger, but if you do, consider carrying a pepper gel key ring with you.

6. Practice safe drinking. Always have one friend who plans on minimal drinking to look out for everyone and watch cups and glasses as well. Only accept drinks you’ve watched get made or poured in front of you.

7. Ask for help. If you need help, call yourself. Don’t rely on bystanders to call for you.

8. Drink water and wear sunscreen. Too much time in the sun can leave you dehydrated and at risk for sunburn or sun poisoning. Take a water bottle and sunscreen when you go out.

FACTS:

ABOUT THE SOLAR ECLIPSE

Rare Occurrence: Total solar eclipses are relatively rare events. On average, they occur somewhere on Earth roughly every 18 months, but each specific location may only experience a total solar eclipse once every few decades.

Viewing Safety: It’s essential to use proper eye protection when viewing a solar eclipse to prevent damage to your eyes. Specialized solar viewing glasses or eclipse glasses are necessary to safely observe the sun during the event.

Animal Behavior: During a solar eclipse, animals may exhibit unusual behaviors. Birds may return to their nests, thinking it’s nighttime, and nocturnal animals may become active.

Scientific Research: Solar eclipses provide scientists with valuable opportunities to study the sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona, which is typically obscured by the sun’s brightness. Researchers can observe and analyze the corona’s structure and dynamics during the brief period of totality.

Here’s a Tip

* What’s the best way to keep sheet sets together? Tuck all the pieces in a matching pillowcase, of course.

* Need to hull strawberries? Try using a straw. You position the straw at the bottom of the strawberry, then push up toward the stem. It works quickly and well.

* If you mount a magnet strip in your bathroom or on your vanity, you can use it to hold bobby pins or metal barrettes. Or mount a ribbon to hold all kinds of hair clips.

* If your entertainment electronics have a clock that is too bright, cover it with plain tape. You will still be able to read the time, but the tape will lessen the glare.

‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help.

For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier HealthcareWorkers Donation Program.”The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com.

“NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.”

The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE

Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.

Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.

The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.

Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.

A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.

Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Birthday celebration thank you

Please don’t close so much

On behalf of 14 women at lunch on March 20 celebrating the birthdays of two special individuals at [a] restaurant in Mt. Morris, we thank you for the generous gesture of paying for our meals. Your act of kindness truly warmed our hearts and made the celebration even more memorable and has left a lasting impression on all of us. Thank you!

From - The Birthday Club

Fantastic County Rehabilitation Facility

We live in [local town] and love our library. We’re always there for books, art exhibits and different programs. However, lately they often close for a day or longer for various reasons. This past weekend they were closed all day Friday and all day Saturday for an indoor miniature golf tournament which was a fundraiser for the library. It’s also not unusual for them to close for a full day for staff training. For holidays they frequently close for two days. These closings are in my opinion excessive and inconvenience many, many people. When it’s time to vote for the library budget, I always go and vote yes. I may rethink that.

Words alone cannot express our thanks to the staff of Livingston County [rehab facility]. My roommate was there for over a month and is now walking. A big thanks to the nurse on the rehab floor, the cleaning dept., the physical therapy dept., and Mike and Erica, were all wonderful! The cafeteria staff, Mike, the food was awesome and they were very courteous. Livingston [rehab facility] was a wonderful place; the staff upon arrival was like old family with their greetings. We also had to use their transportation to go to Rochester to the doctor. Robbie and Holly were awesome on the Mobile Medical. We highly recommend this place. Again, we say a big Thank you! Keep up the great job. We love you all. God Bless You all. Always remember you're never fully dressed until you wear a smile. Thanks again! ~John

Tipping in restaurants

Some restaurants are starting to add a line on your bill to tip the kitchen. Tips are for the servers. Period! The OWNERS should pay their Cooks, Chefs and Cleaners appropriately. With our economy, costs and prices are out of control. I feel it’s absurd to “bleed” your patrons. Some checks have a pre-set tip or an extra line to add a tip but you are on the spot if you choose not to. When I see this, I WON’T RETURN, spreading the word about that restaurant.

EASTER SUNDAY

A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Typically, Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended Sunday services for Christians. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season.

ROASTED BANANA COFFEE CAKE

Serves 8

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus 1 tablespoon at room temperature for the pan

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 bananas

3/4 cup chopped pecans

3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

11/2 cups unbleached all-purpose

flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan with the 1 tablespoon room temperature butteranddustwiththegranulated sugar and tip out any excess.

Place the bananas on a small rimmed baking sheet and roast for 15 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.

In a small bowl, combine the pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium bowl.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated.

With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.
