How to show your support for veterans

S

upporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans.

There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect.

According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come.

• Visit wounded veterans. The United States Census Bureau reports that more than one-third of the nearly 3.8 million men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 have a service-connected disability. Many of these individuals are fighting to overcome physical injuries sustained while on active duty. Individuals who want to show their support for veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility to arrange a visit to wounded veterans.

Such visits can lift veterans’ spirits and reassure them that their sacrifices are both acknowledged and appreciated.

• Support legislation that supports veterans.

Though it might seem like a no-brainer, legislation to support veterans often faces an uphill battle to get passed. By supporting legislation that ensures veterans get the support they need, individuals can send a message to veterans that they haven’t been forgotten and that the very democratic principles they fought to protect are alive and well. Citizens can write letters to their elected

officials, urging them to support veteran-friendly legislation, and raise awareness of bills and laws through social media.

• Help raise awareness about homeless veterans.

Data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that approximately 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night.

But that figure doesn’t tell the whole story, as the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans notes that, over the course of a year, roughly twice that many veterans experience homelessness. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) believes that programs to assist homeless veterans should focus on helping them reach a point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment.

In addition, the NCHV feels that the most effective programs are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Individuals can offer their support to such groups through financial donations or other means so they can continue to ensure no veteran sleeps on the street.

Veterans Day is a time to show veterans that their service and sacrifices are not taken for granted.

Visiting wounded veterans and supporting efforts to ensure veterans get what they need to live full, healthy and happy lives is a great way to send the message that veterans are appreciated.

Too often, people who see a service dog in public will rush up and try to pet the dog or even hug them. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. -- Janine D. in Syracuse, New York DEAR JANINE: Thank you for this timely reminder. Service animals are highly trained to provide assistance to their owners for specific health or mobility issues. Companion animals provide crucial emotional support to owners as well.

With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners.

This is especially important with service and companion animals.

They’re doing a job when out in public. For example, seizure alert dogs are trained to detect an approaching seizure and will gently warn their owners to get to a safe place. Mobility assistance dogs help owners maintain their balance, or with tasks like pressing buttons and opening doors.

It isn’t always evident that they’re working, either. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner.

They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting.

Some good behaviors around service animals include: -- Speak to the owner/handler, not to the animal.

-- Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the service animal.

AUTUM N YARD W ORK GONE ‘GREEN’ According to the Audubon Society, American yards generate tw o tons of clippings each year. A lot of that w aste ends up being bagged and throw n aw ay. Instead of producing w aste, compost leaves and grass trimmings to use as valuable fertilizer come the spring planting season.

W hen choosing a location for your compost bins, be sure to place them a good distance aw ay from the house but near enough to garden beds. M ost yard w aste and food debris can be added to the compost pile. Just avoid animal products, w hich can produce harmful bacteria.

Keep the compost damp and turn it periodic ally to fac ilitate the decomposition process. Soak finished c ompost in w ater to create “ compost tea.” This liquid mixture can be sprayed on law ns in the fall to give the yard a nutrient boost that promotes healthy regrow th w hen the w armer w eather returns.

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom.

The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals.

A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment.

In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men.

Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

Hyaluronic Acid Can Improve Joint Pain, but Isn’t Recommended ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend recommended hyaluronic acid for joint pain in my wrist and hand.

I have been taking 180 mg once a day for a couple months now and have experienced notable success.

I also feel that my neck pain and range of motion in my neck have improved. My question is, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Is it safe, and are there any side effects I should be aware of? -- T.E. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance composed of long strings of sugar.

Because of this structure, it carries a great deal of water, so it acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for several places in the body, including the joints.

Hyaluronic supplements are usually purified from chicken cartilage, but can also be produced by bacterial fermentation. The body makes about 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily.

Multiple studies on injections of hyaluronic acid have shown that it is only slightly better than a placebo at treating arthritis, especially of the knee.

I have stopped recommending injection treatments to my patients with knee arthritis, as they are quite expensive. Oral hyaluronic acid, however, is inexpensive. There have been several small studies showing benefit (again, mostly for the knee rather than the neck), but I couldn’t find any well-done large studies that were convincing.

There is very little harm from hyaluronic acid. None of the studies I’ve read found any serious side effects; however, that doesn’t mean it is completely safe, since supplements aren’t regulated the way prescription medicines are. But I can conclude that oral hyaluronic acid is possibly effective and probably safe for treatment of osteoarthritis.

The studies have mostly used doses in the 100-200 mg range, but I have seen supplements for sale that have 20 mg or less of hyaluronic acid. I’m glad you are taking a similar dosage to what is shown to be effective. ***

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly.

When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. 1. Place the potatoes and onion into a bowl, and stir in eggs, salt and flour as needed to make the mixture hold together. With wet hands, scoop up about 1/3 cup of the mixture per patty, and form into flat round or oval shapes.

2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it shimmers, and gently place the patties into the hot oil. Fry until the bottoms are golden brown and crisp, 5 to 8 minutes, then flip with a spatula and fry the other side until golden.

3. Line a colander or strainer with 2 paper towels, and drain the cooked latkes in the colander. Serve hot.

Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water.

Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Fire Safety Protocols To Keep In Mind When Holiday Decorating • Buy the safest lights. It might be tempting to buy the most inexpensive lights, especially given all the extra costs already associated with the holiday season. However, safety should be the utmost priority when buying new lights. Testing laboratories such as CSA, Intertek and UL certify products to ensure they’re safe for use. Products that aren’t certified should be avoided.

• Use lights and cords where they’re intended to be used. The packaging on lights will indicate if the product is intended to be used indoors or outdoors. It’s vital that individuals decorating their homes pay attention to these labels. Extension cords made for indoors also should not be used outdoors and vice versa.

• Be especially careful with candles. Candles should only be burned when adults are in the room and should always be extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed. When burning candles, place them on heat-resistant surfaces that are beyond the reach of curious kids and pets. Never place candles within arm’s length of Christmas trees or houseplants, including poinsettias.

• Ask an electrician to inspect your exterior outlets and circuits. Ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI) outlets are designed to prevent electric shocks and reduce the risk of electrical fires. GFCI installation is not an especially expensive job, so homeowners should ask an electrician to inspect their interior and exterior outlets and replace non-GFCIs with GFCIs. • Do not pinch light cords. Stringing lights can be a hassle, but cords should never be pinched in doors or windows or beneath interior and exterior furniture. Doing so increases the risk of damage to the cord, which in turn increases the likelihood of fire.

• Avoid overloading circuits. Overloaded circuits pose a significant fire hazard. When plugging in lights, choose outlets that aren’t already occupied by devices and other electronics.

If need be, unplug appliances like televisions and devices while lights are on and plugged in.

Pembroke Jr/Sr High h School Veterans Outreach Club Honors Veterans for Wreaths Across America Day

n 2008, the US Congress declared December 13th Wreaths Across America Day, commemorated by festive, symbolic wreaths laid upon the headstones of US veterans in cemeteries across the nation.

According to Wreaths Across America, these wreaths are each made with care, full of symbolism in every piece. Wreaths are made of ten balsam bouquets, symbolizing the ten special qualities veterans embody: their belief in a greater good; their love for each other; their strength, work ethic, and character; their honesty and integrity; their humility, selflessness, and modesty; their ambitions and aspirations; their optimism for America; their concern for the future; their pride in their duties; and their hopes and dreams that didn’t always come true, but left them with no regrets.” Evergreen components symbolize longevity and endurance, the red bow symbolizes the veteran’s great sacrifice, the forest scent symbolizes purity and simplicity, and the circular shape symbolizes eternity.

What started as one individual’s (Morrill Worchester of Maine) small project to honor US veterans at Arlington National Cemetery expanded over the years to a nation-wide program helping citizens honor our fallen veterans. In 2007, the Worcester family and veterans’ organizations and individuals across the nation formed the 501(c)(3) organization with the simple mission to “Remember. Honor. Teach.” Just a year later, over 300 locations participated in all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, and 24 overseas countries, with 60,000 volunteers helping honor the veterans.

The program continued to expand. In 2022, Wreaths Across America and its volunteers nationwide placed more than 2.7 million sponsored wreaths on veterans’ headstones at 3,702 locations including the Western New York National Cemetery on Route 77 and Indian Falls Rd in Pembroke. When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran’s grave on National Wreaths Across America Day, the organization encourages them to speak that veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life.

Wreaths Across America is committed to teaching all generations about the value of their freedoms, and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms. “Our service members and veterans deserve (and sometimes need) our support all year-round. At WAA, we believe it’s our responsibility to invest in our living veterans so that they may thrive in our communities.”

The Western NY National Cemetery is growing at an extraordinary rate. Last year there were just 750 headstones, and this year there are 1,600.

The Pembroke Veterans Outreach Club, a student organization at the Pembroke Jr./Sr High School is selling the wreaths on behalf of the Memorial Council. Club Advisor, Matt Moscato, says last year the club sold or collected donations for almost 500 wreaths, and they hope to sell enough this year to place a wreath on each of the now-1,600 veteran headstones.

The Veterans Outreach Club and Pembroke Schools also help the council facilitate the Wreaths Across America Day event. Beyond selling wreaths, the kids set up, stage the wreaths, pass them out, direct participants to the proper rows, clean up and help break down the event. They then collect the wreaths at the end of the season.

Moscato says, “It is truly a community-wide event.” Last year there were well over 150 attendees helping lay wreaths on veterans’ headstones. Local fire and police departments help with parking and traffic control, and the Pembroke School transportation department shuttles attendees to different sections of the cemetery.

Junior club President Lilly Senko leads the Veterans Outreach Club. Lilly has been an active member since 7th grade. She has led many club activities, including dinners with the Eagle Star House, collection drives for local veterans, patriotic activities with the elementary school, the opening ceremony for the Pembroke Veterans Wall of Honor in 2021, helping run the Purple Heart ceremony, and helping coordinate the club’s recent trip to Alaska. Lilly is also a talented artist who designed their Alaska trip t-shirts. Lilly plays a major role organizing this year’s Wreaths Across America Day events.

The Outreach Club appreciates the community’s support in honoring our local veterans during the holiday season and helping support the good work of the WNY Memorial Council.

Following the ceremony, family members with loved ones buried there will lay wreaths on their headstones first, then the club will adorn the remaining headstones.

Kudos to Honeoye Central PTA On Friday, October 27th, the Honeoye Central PTA hosted a Trunk n Treat in the parking lot in front of the school. Weather was ideal and so, so many turned out with their children to trick n treat. Thank you to the PTA, the parents that had their vehicles decorated, Richmond Recreation Department, and to the Richmond Fire Department, who all were passing out treats to the many, many children that came. Taunting Neighbors I clean up the leaves by our property line. The neighbors come through after I clean and push their leaves into the area I just cleaned, on my side of the property line. They do this repeatedly every single year, sometimes several times a week. Every time I clean they purposely push their leaves into my yard. They do it solely to taunt me. Guess what, ladies? • Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

• Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant.

• Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.

• Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings.
