Charles E. Palmer September 27, 2019

Furniture Sale

LaGrange- Charles E. Palmer, age 77, of LaGrange, New York, passed away peacefully, Friday, September 27th, surrounded by his loving family, at the Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester. He was born in Albion, New York, June 20th, 1942, the son of the late Edward C. and Katheryn R. Yell Palmer. Charles graduated from the Albion Central School in 1960 and attended RIT. He was a resident of Wyoming County since 1988 and previously resided in Albion. Charles worked as a cashier in mutuals for Finger Lakes Gaming for 27 years before retiring and working part time as a greeter at the Warsaw Walmart. He was a faithful member of LaGrange Baptist Church. Charles absolutely loved bowling and he enjoyed harness racing, driving, boarding and raising horses. Charles found peace and relaxation in maintaining his property. He and his wife were fond of traveling to various horse racing tracks nationwide.

Ralph is a professional photographer, videographer, radio personality, paranormal investigator and author. He started doing ghost tours in Rochester, New York, as well as participating in a local cable show called “Mystic Encounters”.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats?

GREEK SALAD IN JARS Courtesy of Simply Recipes • Makes: 4 salads Salad Dressing: Salads: 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/4 medium red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus additional, to taste 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved pinch of black pepper, plus additional, to taste 1/2 large English cucumber, sliced 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 yellow or orange bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 teaspoon honey 3/4 cup California black ripe olives 5 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup (4 ounces) crumbled feta cheese 4 pint-size canning jars with lids 4 small handfuls fresh baby spinach or other dark, leafy greens 4 pita bread rounds, halved (optional) To prepare dressing: In small bowl, whisk together vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano and honey.

Gradually whisk in oil. Taste. Add additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Divide dressing between four pint jars.

To assemble salads: Divide onion between four jars. Divide tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, olives and feta cheese between jars. Pack remaining space with spinach, compressing leaves slightly.

Secure lids and refrigerate up to two days.

The gap that can occur between any two teeth, known as a “diastema,” most commonly appears between the upper front teeth. This gap may result due to a mismatch between small teeth (inherited from one parent) and large jaw bones (inherited from another).

Otherwise, a diastema between the upper front teeth may be caused by an oversized labial “frenum” (the band of tissue that connects the upper lip to the gums between the upper front teeth).

When an overly extended frenum causes the tooth separation, a ìfrenectomyî may be recommended to alleviate the force exerted by the tissue.

Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician.

• Discharge from the nipple: Any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. A milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician.

Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease.

All season, my neighbor has selflessly mowed the lawn at the home I rent.

I am a single mom with two small children, and I also work full-time, so it is hard for me to find the time to mow the lawn while keeping an eye on my little ones. I couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful, caring We have a neighbor that goes out almost every Friday and/or Saturday night leaving their dogs to bark nonstop for hours. The dogs are obviously barking out of separation anxiety, and we have previously contacted the neighbors to no avail.

You would think they would care that their dogs are in distress when they are not home, not to mention we can’t even open our windows on a beautiful summer night.

Please be responsible dog owners and care for not only your neighbors but for how this effects your dogs on a regular basis. Thank you.

When will we stop being so focused on what gives us a sense of satisfaction, our need for making things “neat and tidy” in the landscape, that we destroy others in the process? When will we stop going our merry way without any thought to our impact on other lives?

I enjoy reading the Rants, especially those about poor restaurant service.

However, while venting may make you feel better, a post about an unnamed restaurant in an unnamed city has no effect. Did you complain to the manager? Did you contact corporate? That gets results. Some of my friends cry, “But I don’t want anyone to lose their job!” Baloney!

If the servers have such disdain for their customers, they don’t belong in the service industry. The position will then go to someone who truly needs it and will do a wonderful job.

My question is simple: why tailgate before passing?

Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County, Inc. Turns 30!

t all started several years ago, before services for those with Down Syndrome were widespread. Several parents started the Down Syndrome Parent Support Group of Genesee County, Inc. (DSPSG) to bond together, to have someone to talk to, to support each other during their journey. The group has evolved to serve the GLOW region and offers New Parent Packets, Family Reimbursement, National Conferences Scholarships, Scholarships to High School Seniors and more to its member families.

“I have been a part of DSPSG for 28 years,” said Dawn Fisher, President of DSPSG. “There are a lot of different experiences that we have to deal with as parents which other people do not, but learning how to handle these experiences and grow as a person and as a parent…it really broadens your view of the world. You see what is and what is not important.”

This includes changing perspective. “We want to change the old stigma,” explained Fisher. “So, one of the things we do is go out and speak at area colleges, public events and provide opportunities for people with DS to interact publicly and actively in community life whether it be with students in schools or elsewhere in the community.”

This year, DSPSG celebrates its 30th anniversary. Fisher hopes those with DS will continue to receive more opportunities and more acceptance from those around them. “I encourage people to really include individuals with DS and give them the same opportunities as everyone else in the community,” she said. “Give them the opportunity to show their potential and value them as contributing members in their communities. Also, show your support for their parents and other caregivers. They play a vitally important role.”

Fisher also said DSPSG will continue to advocate for those with DS. “We certainly need to embrace families with DS members, regardless of the person’s age,” she explained.

“We should continue to support those with DS and provide more opportunities for them as they transition into adulthood as well as throughout their adult years. I believe we really need to work on this transition piece and provide greater opportunities for adults with DS and other special needs.”

The community does seem very supportive. “We are truly blessed because the community is very generous,” said Fisher. “We have had so many local businesses which actively donate to our Annual Autumn Leaves Auction each year. We are really lucky in that aspect.”

“We hold family events so that our families can get together,” Fisher explained. “We chat, give each other encouragement and advice. As we go through the different stages in our children’s lives, we have different needs, and our children have different needs, as well. We also hold meetings, have guest speakers who discuss the importance of having a special needs trust as well as how important it is to plan future care for our children, stipends for our family members to go to different conferences and workshops that are provided in the area. Additionally, we offer two scholarships to GLOW area High School seniors who would like to further their education in a field that works with individuals with special needs.”

“We have also provided hospitals and pediatrician’s offices in the GLOW area with new parent packages about having a child with Down Syndrome,” said Fisher. “Parents and caregivers can use this as a tool and are given contact information to connect with our member families. Often, it is a shock to learn that a newborn has Down Syndrome, and having someone to speak with and provide support and encouragement is key. Information about early intervention is also provided, as early intervention is vital for the baby’s growth and development, as well as giving additional support to the parents.”

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918.

Pros and cons of joint replacement surgery To people outside the medical field, joint replacement surgery might sound like a solution that’s considered only after all other options have been exhausted. But joint replacement surgery has become very common, even though some studies have suggested certain procedures are being performed unnecessarily.

A 2014 study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology found that one-third of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery may not be appropriate candidates for the procedure because their symptoms are not severe enough to merit aggressive intervention like surgery.

The decision to undergo surgery is always a patient’s to make.

Weighing some pros and cons of joint replacement surgery can help patients make the most informed decisions possible.

* On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect themselves from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war after the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. * On Oct. 5, 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Singer wrote about Jewish life in Poland and the United States. One of his stories, “Yentl,” was made into a movie directed by and starring Barbra Streisand in 1983.

Pros - The Cleveland Clinic notes that many patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries have experienced dramatic improvement within a relatively short time after undergoing the surgery. Much of that improvement is related to pain, which for many people becomes overwhelming prior to surgery.

Another benefit to joint replacement surgery is the recovery time.

For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support.

While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted.

Joint replacement surgery also can be a long-term solution, whereas the alternatives might not be. The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures will grow as technology advances.

Cons - As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working.

Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life. A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe.

Joint replacement surgeries are common. When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice.
