Halloween on Ambush: A Labor of Love for a Worthy Cause

ach October, Tony DeMatteo’s residence at 15 Ambush Lane in Churchville transforms into a mesmerizing Halloween spectacle.

What started as a modest family project has evolved into a grandscale production “that rivals county fairs and music festivals,” he says.

This isn’t the typical neighborhood display. It involves police assistance and neighborhood preparation, signage, and volunteers to keep everyone safe and having fun, Tony’s ultimate goal with the display.

This marks the display’s fifth year with the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Before that, Tony captivated audiences with a massive cemetery display, following a Super Mario Brothers-themed exhibit that garnered some local fame. Suggested by Tony’s daughter, the Pirates theme has proven to be a hit due to its family-friendly nature. It attracts a broader audience and fanbase than Tony initially imagined. He adds that Pirate Captains Jack and Barbossa will return on select nights this year.

Over the years, the displays have grown in both size and complexity, culminating in this year’s breathtaking 100-foot-long exhibit. The attention to detail is evident in every element, from the colossal shipwrecks to the intricately designed Port Royal and Fort Charles. Each component stands as a testament to Tony’s creativity and unwavering dedication to bringing joy to his community and continuing the tradition. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! even took notice, featuring his creation in their book.

This year, Tony’s display promises to be bigger and better than ever before. It boasts an expanded array of lights, special effects, and even more captivating music. Tony says he’s proud to have achieved his goal of building this magnificent display but hopes to exceed his target for donations, raising at least $30,000 for The Dream Factory of Rochester, a non-profit organization dedicated to granting dreams for critically and chronically ill children.

He encourages his fans to make a donation to the cause online through his website.

Creating this display is no small feat. Tony invests countless hours over The Matteo family several months, designing and constructing each piece. The level of detail is staggering, with every prop and electronic component being meticulously selected or handmade. The process doesn’t solely rely on Tony, but also involves his dedicated family and a close friend who selflessly contributes hours of labor. The result is a display that rivals the complexity of a rock concert setup, complete with intricate wiring and special effects.

Tony says he acquires most items in his display cheaply and used.

Donations of wood and props have reduced expenses, but he’s still invested around $15,000 in electronics and cabling as well as other expenses over the past five years. Regardless of the cost, the Halloween on Ambush display continues to be 100% nonprofit.

He thanks his supportive neighbors, who grant him permission to create this display, and he thanks the local authorities, who help manage traffic and ensure everyone’s safety, even though it’s not a town-sanctioned event. The Churchville community spirit is strong each Halloween.

Several critical aspects are still being fine-tuned with the Town and Sheriff ’s departments to ensure a safe and successful season. With several thousand visitors attending each show night, traffic management is a top priority.

Halloween on Ambush is a remarkable display of creativity as well as a testament to the power of community, compassion, and determination. Tony DeMatteo’s dedication to this labor of love, combined with the unwavering support of his family, friends, and neighbors, creates unforgettable memories for visitors each year.

The popularity of Halloween on Ambush has produced a logistical challenge: the event’s success has outgrown its current location, prompting Tony to look for an alternative venue for future displays, perhaps an indoor location.

Tony hopes the cherished tradition will continue to bring joy and inspiration to countless families for generations to come.

As Halloween on Ambush is meticulously built by hand, the dismantling process is equally painstaking. Tony disassembles the display piece by piece, storing it all in a large offsite storage barn until the following year.

Tony works year-round on the annual display, and he says he loves witnessing the reactions of visitors. From children’s wide-eyed amazement to the joyous responses of the crowd, these moments make the countless hours of preparation worthwhile.

Rochester General Hospital Good Employees Keep Coming I’ve posted two articles this past year in Raves about encountering exemplary assistance from Rochester General Hospital (RGH) ER MD and a receptionist at the surgical waiting room. It happened again in the ER waiting room on October 16. It all started at 2PM in our home.

My wife started bleeding profusely from her right nostril. I could not stop the bleeding and called 911. Two guys came and drove her by ambulance to the back entrance of theER as my neighbor dropped me off in the front entrance of theER. I went to a side desk and inquired when I could see my wife back in the ER area. I was told awhile. After 10 minutes of nothing but the young woman behind the desk seeing me distraught said she would go and check on my wife. She smiled and jogged away. She came back in 10 minutes telling me she was going in a room that she arranged and an MD would see her soon. Then she got a uniformed guard to take me to the ER room. Yah!Yah! you will get flowers.

In my opinion, aggressive driving IS BULLYING! Since October is AntiBullying Month as per the GVPS, I want to state that, as a driver who drives safely, legally, and reasonably, I am tired of being tailgated too closely for comfort, of obscene hand gestures given my way, of loud blaring of the horn to get me to drive the way the bully desires, and of drivers recklessly speeding around me whether on the right side of the road or the left because they deem that I am too slow. Wake up! I am trying to preserve not only my life but yours as well! If you think your behavior is that of a mature adult, think again! I wish all of you could be arrested for reckless driving! Roads are there to transport us from one place to the next and NOT for driving as if we are INDY 500 racers.

Driving is a privilege and NOT a right!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing about your recent article on the pack of outdoor cats that had started hunting in the person’s yard. This person was looking for ways to keep birds and other small creatures safe from these cats. You should have added a suggestion that the neighbors bell their cats so that chipmunks, birds and other creatures have a chance to escape.

DEAR ELIZABETH: That’s a good point, and thanks for suggesting it! One issue that the person had was that only a few of the cats roaming together actually had collars, making them wonder if some were housecats and others were strays or feral cats. They also weren’t sure which neighbors the cats with collars might belong to.

If they knew which neighbors had those cats, they could certainly speak with the neighbors about at least putting a bell on their collars to warn wildlife of their approach.

So, an indirect approach is sometimes the best or only way to address the problem in an area with no animal control department. Join the local community’s Facebook page and post about the problem that outdoor cats are causing for wildlife in the area. Find opportunities to speak to others about it at church, school board meetings and public forums.

Hallow een also can be a lucrative time of year, as the National Retail Federation notes that Hallow een spending equals roughly $6.9 billion each year. But as popular as Hallow een seems, many countries do not celebrate the holiday.

Hallow een observances are limited mainly to North America and areas of Great Britain. In Scotland and Ireland, traditional customs of Hallow een include dressing up in costume or “ guising.” Parties may be held, and some people have bonfires or set off firew ork displays. Filipinos meanw hile return to their hometow ns and purchase flow ers and candles in preparation for All Saints Day, w hich takes place the day after Hallow een.

In China, the Hallow een festival is know n as Teng Chieh. Food and w ater are placed in front of photographs of family members w ho have passed aw ay w hile bonfires and lanterns are lit in order to light paths for the spirits as they travel the planet on Hallow een night. In Latin America and M exico, Hallow een is know n as “ El Dia de los M uertos.” Translated as “ the day of the dead,” Dia de los M uertos is a three-day celebration that begins on the evening of October 31 and culminates on November 2. It is more a celebration of departed friends and family members than a chance to get hordes of candy.

In France, Hallow een w as relatively unheard of until the mid-1990s. It w as considered an American holiday and not celebrated. How ever, the draw of parties and costumed festivities led some French to embrace certain components of Hallow een.

October is Anti-Bullying Month

Educate Yourself and Your Children

P

arents go to great lengths to protect their children.

Keeping a watchful eye is a great way to protect kids when they're around the house, but parents may need to look for more subtle signs to determine if their children are being mistreated when they leave home.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that roughly 20 percent of students between the ages of 12 and 18 experience bullying nationwide. Parents might once have written off bullying as part of growing up, but research has long since indicated that bullying can be very harmful to youngsters. The DHHS notes that research indicates that persistent bullying can lead to or exacerbate feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion, and despair. Children who are persistently bullied also may experience new or worsening feelings of anxiety and depression.

Parents can play a vital role in preventing bullying. Much of that role involves parents educating themselves about bullying, including what it is and what it's not and what are some warning signs that a child is involved in bullying.

What is bullying?

The DHHS website Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power. Bullying behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. The imbalance of power associated with bullying involves the children who bully using some semblance of power they have over the children they're bullying to harm or control those youngsters. Their power may be physical strength, access to embarrassing information or popularity.

What isn't bullying?

Various types of aggressive behavior have the potential to be harmful, but they do not fall under the umbrella of bullying.

For example, Stopbullying.gov notes that children between the ages of three and five are learning how to coexist with one another, including how to share and cooperate. Children in these age groups may be aggressive if they don't get what they want, but their actions in such instances do not constitute bullying. More information about potentially harmful, non-bullying behaviors is available at Stopbullying.gov.

What are some signs a child is being bullied?

The DHHS notes that not all children who are being bullied exhibit warning signs. In addition, some signs might be more subtle than others. But some potential indicators that a child is being bullied include: • Unexplainable injuries • Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry • Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness • Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. For example, children who are being bullied may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch.

• Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares • Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school • Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations • Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem • Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide What are some signs a child is bullying other children?

Parents also should be on the lookout for signs their children are bullying other youngsters. Such signs include: • Kids get into physical or verbal altercations • Children have friends who bully others • Increasingly aggressive behavior • Frequent trips to the principal's office or to detention • Kids have extra money or new belongings but cannot explain how they got the cash or items • Kids blame others for their problems • An unwillingness to accept responsibility for their actions • Kids are competitive and worry about their reputation or popularity Parents have a vital role to play in preventing bullying so all youngsters feel safe and sound inside and outside of school.

BATAVIA HLOM Exhibit: “Memento Mori: Historic Batavia Cemetery 200 Years, 1823-2023” - The Holland Land Office Museum is proud to announce the opening of its next exhibit, “Memento Mori: The Historic Batavia Cemetery, 200 Years, 1823-2023”. On display Wednesday, July 5th through Saturday, November 4th. The exhibit details the 200 year history of the cemetery, lives of some of the famous Batavians who are buried there, cemetery artifacts, as well as examples of how people have mourned the loss of their love through the past 200 years. The exhibit is done in collaboration with the Historic Batavia Cemetery Association. The exhibit is included in the regular museum admission.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly.

When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia for three years, which has been treated with ibrutinib (Imbruvica) and is now in remission. A side effect of Imbruvica is bleeding, and it requires the drug to be withheld before procedures.

I need a colonoscopy and a prostate biopsy now.

Ideally, how long before and after the procedures should Imbruvica be withheld? If the procedures cannot be performed a day apart, how long is too long an interval between them? How often can Imbruvica be withheld?

Also, at my age, how long is the recovery period required for anesthesia when undergoing two separate procedures? -- T. ANSWER: Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia is a rare disease -- a type of blood lymphoma and a cancer of the bone marrow. Ibrutinib is a new effective treatment for many people who have this condition and sustain remissions from the disease.

As you correctly say, bleeding can be a problem with this medicine, and it is generally held for three to seven days before and after surgery (depending on the type of procedure and the risk involved).

Because a prostate biopsy is a low-risk procedure and a colonoscopy has almost no risk (unless a biopsy is required, then making it a low-risk procedure), most experts would only hold the medication for three days before and after the procedure.

There have been reports of the disease flaring up when withholding the drug, so as little time as possible is the best answer of how long it should be withheld. If you can get the two procedures done within a few days of each other, that would seem reasonable to me, but it is your hematologist whose clinical judgment is required. It would be ideal to coordinate the two procedures.

In my opinion, even a day in between procedures is safe from the standpoint of anesthesia risk.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

Just because you’re heading off for parts unknown doesn’t mean you can’t create the impression that life is carrying on as usual within the walls of your home. Smart home technology now enables homeowners to set timers on lights and even home electronics like televisions and radios. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Here’s a Halloween tip

Keep all visitors outside. Stay inside when passing out candy. Do not invite strangers into your home or allow them to use the restroom or your phone. You can also place a bowl of candy on the front porch rather than handing it out. Include a sign that says: “Happy Halloween! One per person, please.”

Keep a clear pathway. Keep all walkways, both inside and out, clear from flame-lit jack-o-lanterns, oversized decorations, and home décor. Removing items that pose tripping hazards will not only help keep aging loved ones safe, but also the children coming to the door whose vision may be impaired by a mask.

Avoid using candles: Instead, use battery-powered lights to illuminate your jack-o-lanterns. Flames from candles can pose a fire hazard. Part of a costume could catch on fire or, if forgotten, it could cause a house fire.

Hang a sign: Sorry, out of candy. If you’re not handing out candy or if you run out of candy before trick-or-treating hours end, leave a sign on the front door or porch.

This will deter ghosts and goblins from walking up to your front door and ringing your doorbell. Don’t forget to leave your lights on.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Tamoxifen and raloxifene belong to the family of drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). SERMs act like estrogen on some tissues in the body, but block the effect of estrogen on other tissues.

Treatment with tamoxifen lowers the risk of estrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ in premenopausal and postmenopausal women at high risk. Treatment with raloxifene also lowers the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. With either drug, the reduced risk lasts for several years or longer after treatment is stopped. Lower rates of broken bones have been noted in patients taking raloxifene.

Taking tamoxifen increases the risk of hot flashes, endometrial cancer, stroke, cataracts, and blood clots (especially in the lungs and legs). The risk of having these problems increases markedly in women older than 50 years compared with younger women. Women younger than 50 years who have a high risk of breast cancer may benefit the most from taking tamoxifen. The risk of having these problems decreases after tamoxifen is stopped. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this drug.

Taking raloxifene increases the risk of blood clots in the lungs and legs, but does not appear to increase the risk of endometrial cancer. In postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (decreased bone density), raloxifene lowers the risk of breast cancer for women who have a high or low risk of breast cancer. It is not known if raloxifene would have the same effect in women who do not have osteoporosis. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this drug.

Other SERMs are being studied in clinical trials.

WORKPLACE GIFTING ETIQUETTE: GET GIVING RIGHT Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate.

And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip.

According to a poll conducted

by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly.

Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments.

Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised.

Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking.

That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift.

Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment.

Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift.

Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift.

Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals.

It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others.

Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.
