• Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

Rockin’ Red Velvet Trifle Makes 8 servings 1 packet hot cocoa mix with 20 to 25 calories 2 tablespoons mini semi-sweet chocolate chips 1⁄2 cup moist-style devil’s food cake mix 1⁄2 cup moist-style yellow cake mix 1⁄4 cup fat-free liquid egg substitute 1⁄2 tablespoon red food coloring Dash of salt 4 ounces fat-free cream cheese 2 tablespoons Jell-O Sugar-Free Fat-Free Vanilla Instant pudding mix 2 tablespoons Splenda No Calorie Sweetener (granulated) 1⁄4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 8-ounce container Cool Whip (thawed) 4 cups chopped strawberries Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray an 8-inch by 8-inch baking pan with nonstick spray.

Place the cocoa mix and 1 tablespoon chocolate chips in a glass. Add 1⁄4 cup very hot water, and stir until mostly dissolved.

Add 1⁄3 cup cold water.

In a large bowl, combine the cake mixes, egg substitute, food coloring, and salt. Add cocoa mixture, and whisk until smooth.

Pour batter into the baking pan, and sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon chocolate chips.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean, 26 to 28 minutes.

Let cool completely, about 30 minutes in the pan and 30 minutes out of the pan on a cooling rack.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir cream cheese until smooth.

In another medium bowl, combine pudding mix with Splenda. Add vanilla extract and 1⁄4 cup cold water, and vigorously stir until mostly smooth and slightly thickened. Add cream cheese and 1 cup Cool Whip, and stir until uniform. Cover and refrigerate.

Cut cake into 1-inch cubes.

In a large glass bowl or trifle dish, evenly layer half of the cubed cake.

Spread all of the pudding mixture over the cake layer. Evenly top with half of the strawberries.

Continue layering with remaining cubed cake, Cool Whip and strawberries.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, the average American spends 25 minutes commuting to work each day.

However, Citi’s 2015 ThankYou Premier Commuter Index says the average commute time in the United States is 45 minutes.

The reasons for that disparity are unknown, though if one accepts the latter statistic as more accurate than the yearsold Census Bureau data, it’s fair to say Americans spend far more time getting to work than their neighbors to the north. But commutes in Canada also can be lengthy, as Canada’s National Household Survey found that, in 2011, commuters in Canada spent an average of roughly 25 minutes traveling to work each day.

While many people enjoy their daily commutes, feeling it’s a time to prepare for the day ahead and, if using public transportation, to relax and let someone else do the work, it’s fair to say the majority of commuters would like to spend less time getting to and from work.

Many would also like to spend less money getting to and from their offices, and finding ways to conserve fuel is an effective way to do just that.

There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet.

Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet.

Elba Launches Own FFA Chapter with Dinner Fundraiser

tudents, teachers and parents alike are buzzing with excitement in Elba. The town north of Batavia is about to have its own Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter after having partnered with Oakfield-Alabama for the past three years. Now, students will have their own classes and a chapter with additional time and resources.

For years, neither Oakfield-Alabama Central School nor Elba Central School had an FFA. This is rather ironic as the town itself is fairly focused on agriculture. Finally, about three years ago, interested students, families and teachers got together within the two districts and formed an Oakfield-Alabama-Elba FFA chapter with agriculture classes held in Oakfield.

While a resurging interest in agriculture was encouraging, the logistics of bringing students from Elba to Oakfield for agriculture classes was anything but. “It was causing students to miss portions of other classes,” explained Laura Luft, Vice President of the Oakfield-Alabama Elba FFA Alumni Advisory Board supporting both the Oakfield-Alabama FFA chapter and the newly formed Elba FFA chapter. “So, our new Elba Superintendent, Mr. Dale, figured out a way to hire an agriculture teacher. Now, both districts can provide Agriculture classes in-house.”

The FFA provides children with meaningful career education and experience. “We are setting up programs where kids can job shadow,” explained Luft, mentioning that the Elba area has a great group of local business, farms and tractor dealerships. “The FFA offers many opportunities and experiences to help kids become job and career ready as they discover their interests.”

Students who become FFA members have official dress outfits that include the blue with yellow-lettered coats. Recently, the officers of the Elba and Oakfield-Alabama FFAs completed a course on their duties at Cornell. FFA members can attend the state and national conventions, participate in public speaking competitions, job shadow and raise animals. “In Oakfield, the students have a barn for animals they purchase,” said Luft. “This is part of one of their many FFA projects. They track the animal’s feed intake, costs and growth.

Then, they take it to the Genesee County Fair and sell it at auction.

This gives them the opportunity to determine their profits.” Such real-world experience is invaluable.

The Oakfield-Alabama Advisory Board that supports the Elba and Oakfield-Alabama FFA chapters is made up of parents and local business owners from the community, and the advisors from the FFA along with both schools’ superintendents. “We came up with the idea to hold this type of dinner to support both FFA groups, and we are hoping funds from this dinner will help the kids receive funds for items they need, such as the official dress clothing,” Luft

All funds raised during the FFA dinner event will be split between the two districts. “Our First Annual FFA Alumni Dinner and Dance will take place on Saturday, October 26th at the Elba Fire Department Rec Hall at 7143 Oak Orchard Road in Elba,” said Luft. “Our goal is to raise funds to help offset expenses and enhance and expand the programs of the Oakfield-Alabama and Elba Chapters of FFA. We are looking for donations for our silent auction as well as sponsorships from local farms, agricultural businesses and other businesses and families.”

The evening will begin with hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction when doors open at 6pm. A basket raffle will run throughout the evening. Dinner, served at 7 pm, will be catered by the always exceptional Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. There will be a cash bar, and after dinner, Savage Cabbage will provide music for dancing. The Oakfield-Alabama Elba FFA Alumni Advisory Board members will be present to host along with their officers: Kendra Lamb, President; Laura Luft, Vice President; Pete Zeliff, Jr., Treasurer and Melissa Haacke, Secretary. Potential treatment options after a breast cancer diagnosis A breast cancer diagnosis is something no one wants to receive. But the burden of breast cancer is substantial. In fact, the World Health Organization notes that breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide.

Thankfully, breast cancer survival rates are high in many parts of the world, particularly in developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan. While survival rates are lower in developing countries, it is encouraging to know that the average five-year survival rates are as high as 90 percent in some nations. That suggests that the strategies used to successfully fight breast cancer in developed nations may one day prove as effective in developing nations, potentially leading to a sharp decline in global breast cancer deaths.

Upon being diagnosed with breast cancer, patients will be educated about a host of potential treatment options. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that breast cancer is treated in several ways, and the course of treatment a doctor recommends will depend on the kind of breast cancer and how far it has spread. In addition, breast cancer is made up of many different kinds of cancer cells, which often necessitates the use of various types of treatments to get rid of the cancer.

by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020.

Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period.

1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen.

Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year.

2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020.

3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you.

The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency.

4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as nonemergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others.

5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day.

While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day.

1. Embrace organization tools.

Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations.

2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients.

3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction.

4. Reconsider your commute.

Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day.

• Ensures the highest standards of catered/special events.

• Works with Director to ensure Dining Room is decorated for seasonality.

• Involve culinary team with resident interactions, problem solving and new idea generation.

QUALIFICATIONS Education: Associate’s degree (A.A.S.) in Food Service or Culinary Arts with three to eight years’ experience in a leadership capacity in a restaurant or dining environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with a variety of cooking methods and procedures. Ability to create a menu reflective of resident preferences that can be supported through sequencing of available kitchen equipment. ServeSafe Certification or willingness to obtain it within first 90 days of employments.

Supervision: Direct supervision of 1.25 FTE’s of cooks, .5 FTE’s of utility and 1.5 FTE’s of servers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include: training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints and resolving problems in the overall scope of his or her responsibilities.
