LOCAL museums The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum Where History Takes Flight

Celebrating his groundbreaking contributions to flight, the museum showcases a remarkable collection of early aviation artifacts, motorcycles, automobiles, and bicycles.

Curtiss, often referred to as the “Father of Naval Aviation,” made history with his 1908 flights over the frozen waters of Keuka Lake. His relentless drive for innovation led to the establishment of the Curtiss School of Aviation in 1910, where he trained many of the world’s first pilots, including those who would form the foundation of the U.S. Navy’s aviation program.

LOCAL museums The museum complex consists of two main buildings: a Replica Cooper Shop and the Wine Museum, which also houses the Walter S. Taylor Art Gallery. The Cooper Shop pays tribute to the art of barrel-making, featuring a remarkable collection of cooperage tools and a 70-minute documentary on the craft. Greyton H. Taylor Wine Museum A Journey Through Winemaking History

Taylor Wine Museum explores the region’s rich winemaking heritage. Founded in 1972 by Walter S. Taylor in honor of his father, Greyton Hoyt Taylor, founder of Bully Hill Vineyards, the museum is located on the original Taylor Winery site—where the legacy of New York State’s wine industry was shaped.

Inside the museum, visitors can explore an extensive array of antique winemaking equipment, Prohibitionera artifacts, and a unique collection of Presidential wine glasses dating back to Abraham Lincoln’s time.

Each piece tells a story of resilience, innovation, and craftsmanship that shaped the industry.

Art lovers will be captivated by the Walter S. Taylor Art Gallery, which showcases over 200 original works

Finger Lakes Boating Museum Preserving a Century of Maritime History 8231 Pleasant Valley Road, Hammondsport www.flbm.org Located in Hammondsport, the Finger Lakes Boating Museum (FLBM) is a premier destination for enthusiasts of maritime history, craftsmanship, and the boating heritage of the Finger Lakes region. Open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM, the museum houses an extensive collection of watercraft, artifacts, and interactive exhibits, offering a deep dive into over a century of Finger Lakes boating traditions.

A highlight are the historic boat tours on Keuka Lake aboard The Pat II, a beautifully restored 1924 tour boat.

Originally serving in the Thousand Islands and later Skaneateles Lake, FLBM acquired The Pat II in 2014 and began a meticulous seven-year restoration. Now powered by a quiet, eco-friendly electric motor, The Pat II offers scenic daily tours from June to mid-October, sharing the lake’s boating history and lore.

FLBM is also an educational hub, with the FLBM Academy offering courses, workshops, lectures, and youth programs, as a leading educational institution for Finger Lakes boating. The museum’s two active boat shops allow visitors to witness boat restoration firsthand, engage with volunteers, and learn about ongoing projects.

The museum also houses a research library and maintains a growing list of past and present Finger Lakes boat builders. FLBM hosts events like “Coffee with the Captain,” boat-building workshops, and Keuka Dragon Boat Club, where participants can experience the thrill of team racing on the water.

LOCAL museums Saunders Finger Lakes Museum Celebrating Culture and Ecology 3369 Guyanoga Road, Branchport www.fingerlakesmuseum.org On the north end of Keuka Lake, the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum (SFLM) stands as a beacon of education, exploration, and appreciation for the Finger Lakes Region. With a mission to inspire and celebrate the area’s rich cultural and ecological heritage, the museum offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to engage with the landscape and history of this unique region.

The museum recently underwent a significant transformation, becoming the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum in honor of philanthropist E. Philip Saunders and his family foundation. This renaming reflects a momentous step in the museum’s evolution, aligning with its growing presence and development. The museum’s refreshed logo still features the majestic bald eagle, a species that symbolizes the region’s environmental vitality, and a color palette inspired by the stunning natural hues of the Finger Lakes.

While the museum’s main exhibit building is under construction, progress is well underway. The infrastructure—including utilities, concrete, and steel—is complete, with roofing and exterior work scheduled for the coming seasons. In the meantime, visitors can still explore the museum’s expansive campus, which offers a variety of outdoor experiences. From the TownsendGrady Wildlife Preserve, a vital water filtration system for over 160 square miles, to a boardwalk and octagon pavilion overlooking Keuka Lake, the museum provides a rich natural escape.

The SFLM campus is home to a vibrant range of activities. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy bird walks, StoryWalk trails, and a Playscape natural playground experience. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks at the self-service floating launch on Sugar Creek. The future main building, designed to reflect the rolling Finger Lakes hills, will feature interactive exhibits, a community center, and educational spaces.

With its dedication to education, nature, and community engagement, the Saunders Finger Lakes Museum promises to be a premier destination for visitors of all ages. While awaiting its grand opening, guests are encouraged to participate in seasonal programs and witness the exciting progress firsthand.

Yates County History Center Preserving Yates County History

107 Chapel Street, Penn Yan • www.yatespast.org Located in the heart of Penn Yan, the Yates County History Center (YCHC) is one of New York State’s oldest historical societies, dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Yates County since 1860. With four historic buildings, thousands of artifacts, and an extensive research collection, YCHC offers a unique glimpse into the region’s past. Open Tuesdays-Fridays year-round.

Oliver House Museum: Built in 1852, the Oliver House is an elegant Italianate-style home that now serves as the cornerstone of YCHC. Originally a residence for the prominent Oliver family, this 18-room house is filled with period furnishings, historical artifacts, and fascinating exhibits. Visitors can explore the lives of the Oliver family, the role of Irish domestics in 19th-century Yates County, and the medical legacy of the Oliver doctors. Families can also enjoy a hands-on children’s room featuring interactive farm-themed activities.

L. Caroline Underwood Museum: A devoted educator, traveler, and collector, L. Caroline Underwood dreamed of creating a public history museum, and her vision lives on at 107 Chapel Street. This museum showcases Caroline’s vast personal collection, from antique toys and fine jewelry to her famed pink ceramic pigs. The long-term exhibit, Caroline Underwood: Collector, Teacher, Traveler, brings her passion to life, while rotating displays offer fresh perspectives on local history. The museum is also home to the Spencer Research Center, where visitors can explore thousands of digitized historical documents and photographs, including all Yates County newspapers.

Scherer Carriage House Museum: Behind the Underwood Museum, the Scherer Carriage House is home to a compelling exhibit on the Public Universal Friend, a unique historical figure and founder of the Society of Universal Friends. This exhibit features rare artifacts, including the Friend’s portrait, Bible, and personal belongings, offering insight into the life and influence of this religious leader. The Carriage House is a must-visit for those interested in early American religious movements and Yates County’s pioneering past.

A GUIDE TO EXPLORING THE GEM OF THE FINGER LAKES Keuka Lake, named for the Iroquois “canoe landing” or “bent elbow” depending on the source, is a captivating destination in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region. Known for its unique Y-shape, Keuka is often heralded as the most picturesque of all the Finger Lakes, with its panoramic vineyards and inviting, warm waters that make for perfect swimming throughout the summer.

Nearly 20 miles long and 2 miles wide, Keuka Lake holds approximately 379 billion gallons of water and reaches a depth of around 100 feet. Its watershed spans 110,000 acres across ten towns and two villages in Yates and Steuben Counties. This area has been a hub of human activity since early settlers hunted, fished, and gathered wild foods at the end of the Ice Age. The region’s agricultural history began around 900 years ago with the Owasco people, who introduced the “Three Sisters”—interplanted corn, beans, and squash. The Seneca tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy inhabited the area until they were displaced by colonists after the Revolutionary War. Since then, the region has developed rich agriculture, tourism, and recreation.

Keuka Lake is home to the quaint towns of Penn Yan, Branchport, and Hammondsport, all of which are steeped in history and a rich array of amenities and attractions that beckon to people near and far throughout the year.
