Community Service at Heart of Local Bank Canandaigua National Bank & Trust (CNB) has been serving the Penfield community for nearly 20 years from the bank’s branch office in the town’s historic four corners. Located in the former site of the Penfield Tavern, CNB’s Penfield office (1816 Penfield Road, Penfield) has provided financial services to local businesses and individuals since 2004. “Serving the community is one of my passions and I believe that making a difference starts in your own backyard,” said Amity Decker, Assistant Vice President and Penfield Community Office Manager. “CNB gives us the opportunity, support, and flexibility to be a part of our community as that is what our focus is.” Founded in 1887, CNB is the region’s only local, fullservice, community-owned financial institution. The bank has 25 branches in Ontario and Monroe counties, as well as three Financial Services Offices, located in Canandaigua, Bushnell’s Basin, and downtown Rochester. With just over 700 employees total, the bank is currently led by Frank H. Hamlin, III, the fifthgeneration Hamlin to guide the bank. The bank is committed to honoring local history. Prior to opening a branch in any community, CNB works closely with local historians to make each branch unique to that community, often decorating the office with historic photographs and fine art. center is also based locally. “I began my journey at CNB as a customer in 2005,” added Decker. “The tellers greeted me by name when I came in the branch to do my banking and they were always very friendly. I applied to work here in 2009 because I figured that if the customer service was this good then it was most likely a great place to work, and boy was I right. This year I am celebrating 14 years at CNB.” In addition to leading a team of six employees, Decker serves on the board of the Penfield Business Chamber which provides opportunities to learn about the various businesses in the community. “CNB actually talks the talk and walks the walk,” said local multi-business owner Kimberly Rose who runs both DeLand House on Main (1 E Church Street, Fairport) and KRo Events. Rose represents the Penfield branch office on CNB’s Advisory Board which is comprised of influential community members who provide insight and serve as ambassadors to the bank. Each CNB branch has representatives on the Advisory Board. “When they say they are a community bank that actually cares about their community, they prove it time and time again by the programs and practices they put into place. The Advisory Board is a great example of that,” Rose added.

Rose is joined on the Advisory Board by Andrew R. Randisi of Weinstein Randisi Law Firm (290 Linden Oaks, Suite 200, Rochester) and Randy Barkin of Incognito Menswear & Tux Shop (1823 Penfield Road, Penfield). All are CNB customers. “I appreciate the opportunity to give feedback that can actually impact daily operations for the better for the clients of the bank, and not necessarily the bank itself,” said Randisi. “Being a member has also provided me with the chance to learn about new product and service offerings of CNB, and thus the opportunity to make recommendations to my clients that better match their needs.” Decker works closely with CNB’s business clients to ensure their needs are met. Whether it be business accounts, fraud protection, loans, or offering services to their employees for their own personal banking. Additionally, Decker invites business customers to be featured as “Business of the Month” by setting up a display in the lobby to advertise. “I’ve worked with Amity since she was sitting behind the teller’s desk quite a few years back,” said Barkin, who became a CNB customer the day the Penfield branch was opened. “She’s always been a passionate advocate for CNB and the town of Penfield. Since becoming the branch manager she’s been instrumental in helping our business navigate through the Covid pandemic while continuing to support local businesses.” Decker encourages her team to support customers and the Penfield community. Last spring, she took her son to Barkin’s business for a tuxedo for his senior prom. She also referred her daughter’s wedding party. “To me that shows personalized service with attention to fostering the relationships that she’s developed,” Barkin added. Randisi agrees.

“For some, banking may seem a routine or even a mundane experience. Amity has done a great job of making CNB’s client experience something to look forward to and has managed to get a diverse group of business owners together who are excited about continuing to improve that experience,” Randisi said. Another strength of CNB’s Penfield branch is the presence of Margaret M. Whelehan, a Financial Advisor with Canandaigua Investment Services* based at the office. “I never understood what it meant to be part of a community bank until I ‘found’ CNB. I thought that was just marketing mumbo jumbo trying to lure customers in,” Rose said. “It seemed like a huge leap of faith when I made the change but looking back it was the smartest thing I could have ever done.” For Barkin, it’s about CNB’s customer service.

“Without question, it’s the personalized attention I’ve gotten at CNB since becoming a customer,” said Barkin. “As a local business here in Penfield since 1985, my company has been through a number of different banks through mergers and changes due to what I felt was a lack of service, but from the first day at CNB the atmosphere there was different, welcoming.” CNB takes pride in participating in many areas of the community. Town Supervisor Hello everyone, First off, I want to thank the Penfield business community for contributing to the vibrancy of our Town. A strong, diverse business community positively impacts us all in so many ways. Not only do businesses contribute to our tax base, but they also provide valuable services to residents and attract visitors. For that, we say thank you for doing business here in Penfield! As a Town, we are working on several projects to better our community. Of note, I hope you have seen the ongoing improvements occurring in the Four Corners Business District. With funding recently received through a grant from the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority, we’ve added planters in the Four Corners area during the summer season. Banners have also been installed on light poles recognizing local agricultural businesses, and a plaque commemorating our farming heritage is being added in Schaufelberger Park. We’re thrilled to recognize local businesses and add value to the area with the new program. Additionally, last year during the holiday season we added holiday lights on light poles along with additional decorations to the area. This holiday season, we will be installing a 30-foot Christmas tree which is sure to get you in the holiday spirit! Along with improvements taking place in the Four Corners District, we continue moving forward with plans to transform the Clark House into a lodge for community use. The current plan is to renovate/rehab the original Clark House and rebuild the remainder of the building to create an event venue accommodating up to roughly 150 people. When completed, this project will be a great asset for our community and provide much-needed event space. As we’ve been talking about for quite some time, planning is ongoing for the construction of a new DPW facility to replace the current facility which was originally constructed in 1957. It would be built directly adjacent to the existing facility on Jackson Road. The entire community, including our businesses, relies on the essential services our DPW provides. A new facility would improve operating efficiency and continuity of service. The design process is ongoing, and we will continue sharing additional information with our community as it becomes available. With all that we do, our focus remains on making Penfield a top destination to live and work. I am excited to partner with you as we continue moving Penfield forward. I am writing to you as the President and proud member of The Penfield Business Chamber (PBC). The Chamber has played a pivotal role in connecting businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals in order to create synergies and promote collaboration. The Penfield Business Chamber has been a driving force in promoting the growth and success of businesses in and around the community. Throughout the year the Chamber has organized and hosted numerous events, providing networking, collaboration, and community engagement. As we reflect on the past year, it is evident that the PBC has had a remarkable impact on the local business landscape. Some of the highlights on the Chamber’s calendar included Topics@12, Chamber on Tap, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, our Annual Meeting, Holiday Party, Penfield High School Job Fair and PENFEST, which is becoming a beloved tradition bringing together local businesses, residents and visitors alike. The purpose of this program is to recognize a PBC member business that exemplifies contribution(s) to the Penfield community, PBC involvement, and/or charitable works. Nominations can be made through our website and the PBC Board of Directors make a final selection each month from all submitted nominations. Annual Business of the Year Awards Each year, the Penfield Business Chamber recognizes businesses in our community with three special awards: Business of the Year, the Daniel Penfield Award, and the Penfield Pride Award. The awards were presented in January 2023 for the previous year. We thank all of our recipients for their gracious contributions to the Penfield community!

Recipients from 2022 are as follows:

Business of the Year – Canandaigua National Bank This award is given annually by the Penfield Business Chamber to honor a local business that has significantly contributed to the vitality and success of the Penfield business community. The recipient of this award sponsors several local organizations, including the PBC and beyond. As the only local, full-service, community-owned financial institution in the Rochester area, its Penfield Bank Office is just 1 of 24 locations throughout Monroe and Ontario Counties, but is more of a “community bank” to those in the Penfield area due to its support of the community and PBC. The Penfield Branch houses and facilitates the Penfield Business Chamber’s Welcome Brigade bag distribution to new home owners in the Penfield area. They have also provided a meeting place for the relaunch of Morning Spark, as well as the PBC Board Annual Retreat. This past fall they organized a food drive and donated several boxes of food for the Thanksgiving food baskets for the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf. The Penfield branch is also active in its support of the Penfield School District through sponsorship for the Penfield Patriots baseball, basketball, and Varsity Soccer teams, as well as the Penfield High School Senior Bash.

Penfield Pride Award – Newbrough Piano Studio Each year the Penfield Business Chamber recognizes a local business that rehabilitates an existing building, creates a vibrant new look and becomes a positive addition to Penfield’s proud community.

This year’s recipient maintained the exterior of a most notable landmark in the vicinity of the Four Corners of Penfield. The building dates back to the late 1820s, when it was built as a homestead by Calvin Owen, who made his mark on many of Penfield’s oldest buildings, including the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church. Owen built the home, located at 2129 Five Mile Line Road, for Ira Mann, but later purchased it himself in 1854. Known now as the Mann-Owen house, the building has undergone several renovations throughout its history, including its most recent one. Once a home residence, it is now a residence for piano instruction, provided by Dr. William John Newbrough of Newbrough Piano Studio. The studio, elegantly refurbished inside, is equipped with two grand pianos, a digital piano and studio recording equipment, a sitting area for families, cloakroom and restroom, and a library of piano music and books on piano and pianists. Providing this musical education for children and adults is a welcome addition to the Penfield Community, and helps to enhance its community culture.

Daniel Penfield Award – Sarah Jane Clifford This award is given annually by the Penfield Business Chamber to honor a local businessperson who has positively impacted the Penfield business community through his or her community involvement, business practices and overall character. 2023-2024 Penfield Business Chamber Directory

Daniel Penfield was an American merchant and Revolutionary War veteran whose entrepreneurial spirit brought him to Upstate New York with plans of building mills along the falls of Irondequoit Creek to encourage settlement. Over the years he built or controlled several mills on Irondequoit Creek, including a sawmill, grist mill, distillery, ashery, oil mill, soap mill, clothing mill, and tannery. The population grew rapidly, and in 1810, the township and the adjoining township to the north, were designated by the New York State Legislature as the Town of Penfield. The 2022 recipient of this award is very much like Daniel Penfield in the fact that she was one of the founders of the Penfield Business Association, now known as the Penfield Business Chamber. She is one of the most highly regarded and recognizable business and community leaders in Penfield; dedicated to promoting its community, the people in it, its businesses, and developing programs that help our children to embrace and recognize their strengths, be them physical or character. As owner of a business which has been a staple in the Penfield community for decades, she has always opened its doors to many community organizations, like Penfield Recreation and Penfield High School, and has been actively involved in many community activities herself. And though she has closed her business in Penfield after 35 years, she continues her support and involvement in the PBC and its community. She is a true inspiration and role model to anyone with whom she comes in contact. Ironically, she was also honored with this award ten years ago, and that just goes to show her continued commitment to both the PBC and the Penfield community at large. continued on next page

Penfield Business Chamber Programs and Events

The Penfield Business Chamber (PBC) hosts several programs and events monthly for its members as well as guests. These programs are designed to provide our member businesses/organizations with networking, education, and promotional opportunities. We always welcome other individuals and businesses who may want to attend to learn more about the Chamber itself. PBC monthly events are held on the same day and time so that members and guests can plan their attendance accordingly. Our Topics@12 event is held on the first Tuesday of every month during the lunch hour at various member locations and features presentations on various topics of interest from PBC member businesses, community partners, and a variety of speakers. In 2023, presentation topics included information about the usage of Educational Legislative Updates, How to Craft an Elevator Pitch, Maximizing Your LinkedIn Profile, Cold Calling, Small Business Plan Points, and more! Attendees are encouraged to bring their business cards, guests, and a promotional item from their business/organization to donate for a raffle prize. Lunches for this event can be on your own, or may be sponsored, and the cost to attend is FREE! Another pre-set monthly event is our Chamber on Tap, held on the fourth Thursday of every month at various restaurants/eateries where members and their guests can gather and network and enjoy delicious appetizers, sponsored by one of our member businesses. This informal networking event is usually FREE for PBC members, and only a nominal fee for guests!

In May of 2022, the Penfield Business Chamber began a partnership with the Penfield High School PTSA for a Student Summer Job Fair at Penfield High School, where students were able to visit participating PBC member booths and community businesses to inquire about possible employment and volunteer opportunities! As a result of this collaborative event, several students were able to find summer employment and also volunteered at the Penfield Business Chamber PENFEST event, which provided them with required community service hours, as well as exposure to businesses and organizations in and around the Penfield community! We receive a lot of positive feedback from the businesses and organizations that attend, and especially from the students! Stay tuned for more information on the 2024 PTSA/PBC Student Summer Job Fair. We are pleased that this partnership has continued, and that we were able to participate in another PTSA/ PBC Job Fair in May of 2023! The event included over two dozen businesses and was also featured on local news channels.

Third Annual

PENFEST In addition to our monthly events, the Penfield Business Chamber held its annual event to promote member businesses and organizations, as well as its community partners. This year, the PBC hosted its third annual PENFEST, a family-focused and festive event that was held on Friday, June 9, 2023 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. on the lawns of the Penfield Recreation/Community Center on Baird Road in Penfield, NY. The PENFEST included over 65 PBC member and community vendors, ranging from non-profit organizations to specialty retailers to consumer business and the products and services that they offer. The first 250 attendees received a complimentary Swag Bag (courtesy of the PBC and its sponsors), had the opportunity to visit vendor booths, and received some great promotional items to add to this bag! But most importantly, attendees had the opportunity to meet and learn more about the businesses in and around the Penfield community! The PENFEST was FREE for members of the Penfield community and beyond. The event was well-attended, with over 1,000+ attendees who enjoyed a pre-summer evening with music by Bach to Rock, a variety of food trucks, a KidZone, and a raffle with over 40 amazing prizes, including a gift basket filled with Buffalo Bills paraphernalia, a kid’s pop-up tent, a gaming chair, and a paddle yoga session! Raffle proceeds were split evenly between the PBC and the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf, which serves over 189 families in the Penfield community on a weekly basis! Town Supervisor Debbie Drawe was on-hand to

help kick-off the event and congratulate the Penfield Business Chamber on over 31 years of supporting, connecting, and promoting businesses and individuals working in and around the Penfield Community. The PBC could not have done this without the support of the Town of Penfield, The Penfield Recreation and Community Center, and especially, its members and the many vendors who participated! We look forward to next year’s event – the fourth annual PENFEST in 2024! Stay tuned for the specifics!
