CROSS ROADS HOUSE
A THRIVING COMMUNITY PROVIDES A PLACE FOR ALL.
We have spent 40+ years evolving towards a proven strategy of safety and support for the unhoused in the greater NH Seacoast area, building a commitment to advocacy and respect that local communities and our donors have stood behind from Day One. What started as an opportunity to solve an immediate and emergent need has developed into a formula of success. That original passion has grown along with our organization. As we move forward into the future, we carry our core mission of providing shelter, respect, and collaborative solutions with us while at the same time evolving to meet the needs of an ever-changing demographic and definition of homelessness.
We offer shelter, respect and collaborative solutions to unhoused individuals and families who aspire to return to permanent housing and thrive in their community.

Dear Friends of Cross Roads House
In recent years, we have emphasized how monumental change puts a premium on our ability to adapt and respond to the severe challenges that a shelter community can face. Every day we see the trauma and disruption that homelessness can inflict on the individuals and families that come to us for help. Every day we see the demographic represented in our resident community shift, bringing us so many who we never thought would cross our threshold. The only consistency we can see is that homelessness continues to be a life-threatening issue that creates barriers to the most basic of human rights – shelter.
Our support of this population would not have been possible without our skilled and dedicated staff. While some think of CRH primarily as a physical structure that provides emergency shelter for the area’s homeless, it is actually much more than that. From the moment they become a part of this community, our residents are welcomed by our direct service staff and assigned a case manager. These teams work together to provide for the residents’ immediate needs, helping to
www.crossroadshouse.org
get them to settle and feel safe. They also work with residents to identify and connect to the resources that can address any additional needs, and start them on a purposeful path to post-shelter stability. This work includes active participation from our housing success team to secure permanent housing and provide post-shelter case management to ensure the best possible chances for a positive transition and long-term housing success.
Most important is our ethos of creating a community that recognizes the human element connecting us all and recognizing that each of us, regardless of circumstance, needs dignity and respect.
It is the flexibility, resourcefulness, compassion and dedication of our staff that allows us to continue our vital service for the area. We partner creatively with our colleagues in federal, state and local government, with the area’s non-profit community, and with our donors and supporters, to develop and implement systems to address the escalating housing crisis. We are led by a committed team of missiondriven professionals who are innovative and thoughtful. CRH would be just a building without them.
Since 1982, we have served well over 20,000 residents, providing over 800,000 bed nights and over one million meals. That means we have sheltered as many unhoused individuals as there are Portsmouth residents. We have saved the Seacoast communities in Rockingham, Strafford, and York counties an estimated $70 million by providing for their unhoused and hungry residents.

Often, we reflect on what the Seacoast would look like if CRH was not here to meet the needs of all those that have walked through our doors asking for a meal, a bed, and someone to care.

What do you think it would look like?
Even as we reflect on what we have done in the past, we realize that CRH will need to adapt as the face of homelessness continues to change. Unfortunately, almost daily, we all see, read, and hear evidence of the growing size of the unhoused community, and the increasing challenge of meeting their needs. As the homelessness landscape continues to shift, CRH will continue to evolve as we look for solutions to help build a better and more coordinated ecosystem to support our unhoused. Demographically, we are seeing more unhoused women, children, families, and elderly. NH school districts recently recorded over 3,300 unhoused children in NH’s public schools, a number which school officials acknowledge is likely an undercount. By another estimate, there are currently approximately 15,000 youth between the ages of 16-24 who are couch-surfing. At the same time, the state of New Hampshire needs an estimated 23,500 housing units to achieve housing stability, with deeply affordable and affordable housing development in true crisis mode. And this number is projected to grow.
This all translates into the vital mission that is Cross Roads House.
CRH, for some time, has been building a successful model of service designed to meet the unhoused where they are. It is intensive, customized work that requires adequately staffed professional triage and case management components to partner with providers of physical and mental healthcare; transportation, and housing; food banks; and municipal and State agencies and services to meet the needs of our residents. Advocacy continues to be central to all we do. Whether through outreach, representation, or education, it remains paramount to highlight the critical nature of homelessness, and how it will take all of us working together to finally make this crisis solvable.
As we develop our plans for that future, we must include more space for women and families, and better accommodation of our growing elderly population. This will require construction of a new building to provide more emergency and transitional family housing, as well as more resource space for educational programming, and case management staff. Our main facility – built to accommodate twice as many men as women - will also require reconfiguring to allow us to accommodate the increasing number of women needing shelter access.

We need your help now, more than ever.

Please believe us when we say that we do not take our donor community for granted. CRH is fortunate to exist on the Seacoast, where belief in our mission—and the missions of our sister nonprofits—is committed and deep. Without your steadfast support, CRH simply would not exist. Your generosity leaves us feeling grateful and inspires us. Through our meetings and conversations with many of you, we know that you understand the importance of what we do and the value we bring to the community. As long as that support— both moral and financial— exists, we are confident of our ability to do what we need to do in order to rise energetically to the challenges ahead.
Chuck Silva, President Board of DirectorsIn the following pages, you will read about just a few of our remarkable residents, former and current. We hope these accounts will help to deepen our collective understanding of what homelessness on the Seacoast actually looks like, and who it actually affects. In these accounts you will meet people who are working, just as we all work, toward a better life for themselves and their families. People who are putting in the time and the effort—with guidance and support from our direct service staff and case managers—to gain back the housing stability that each of us needs in order to live our lives and provide for ourselves and our families, and engage in our communities. We are in awe of the obstacles that our residents overcome to achieve these goals.
As you read the accounts of these individuals, please know that these are just a few of the many in our area who have been pushed out of their homes or fallen on hard times. Let us not forget them.
With your support, our work continues.

“I had no idea how easy it was to fail out there. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way, but I know that I am making progress. I’m proud of myself . . . I really am grateful for CRH.”
A young mother of three who had been homeless as a teenager, Jessica had been living on her own in an apartment. She is the first to admit that she was not at all prepared for the responsibilities of managing her life –job, childcare, paying bills, etc. So she gave up her apartment and began to stay with friends and family. That was not ideal or good for her children. When she first came to the shelter, she was dealing with a lot of anxiety and substance issues, but in the time since she’s been here she has remained sober, learned so much and has taken care of her own mental health.
“I don’t know where I would be if I hadn’t come here.”

STABILITY
In 2016 we launched a successful post-shelter Housing Stability/ Eviction Prevention program, taking case management beyond our shelter and into the community. We have since expanded that to include additional Housing Stability Case Manager staff and a Housing Liaison. This position plays a critical role for CRH in the community by connecting with area landlords and property managers, building trust and engagement around the placement of our residents in their properties.
This critical scaffolding, bolstered by the life skills assessments and training done as residents leave the shelter, has proven that these models can and do produce successful outcomes.

TYLER
“There is light at the end of that tunnel, no matter how dark it is.”
When Tyler first came to Cross Roads House, he was skeptical of the programs and the people he met. This distrust was borne out of three years of couch surfing and living in the back of a tavern in exchange for work. It took him a while to feel safe and not feel “like a loser for being homeless.”
Once Tyler realized he was going to be alright and had found the real support he needed, he made progress towards finding housing. He also made friends, found consistent work and learned to like himself again. Before moving out, he shared that he felt protected at CRH and was treated respectfully “regardless of my sexuality or religion or even my skin color. After being here, and going through the program, I realized that there are people who actually care.”

JOHN
“Very simply put, Cross Roads is a safe place. It lives here ... that feeling of home.”
In the summer of 2022, John sat in the parking lot across the road from Cross Roads House, assessing his situation. He had been living with his brother, but for many reasons that was no longer an option. He could leave New Hampshire, after living here his whole life, and drive to Florida, or he could come across the road to us. He came to Cross Roads House, knowing that he still had a choice but this was the one that would save his life. And it did, many times. John stayed with us for 11 months and now resides in senior housing in Portsmouth. “Cross Roads House people are smart, they know what they are doing. They want to help and don’t make you feel bad for accepting it.”

Benefit by the Sea
Cross Roads House’s 21st Annual Benefit by the Sea, held May 6, 2023 at the Wentworth by the Sea Hotel, brought together 200 members of the Seacoast community to help celebrate the organization’s 40th year. This marquee fundraiser solicited more than $665,000. The success of the evening was due in no small part to the corporate and private sponsors who helped to underwrite the event. Guests in attendance were equally generous, offering pledges that essentially doubled the sponsorship dollars.
“As you can imagine, our work for those most vulnerable in our community never stops,” shared Lissa Gumprecht, Director of Development and Communications for Cross Roads. “We have spent 40 years evolving towards a proven strategy of safety and support for them, building a commitment to advocacy and respect that the Seacoast community has stood behind from Day One. Tonight’s event celebrates that shared commitment.”
