The American Institute
of Architects and La Izquierda Fest partner to enrich the annual AIA Sandcastle Competition, this year presented by 811 Call or Click Before You Dig, with music, vendors, and family-friendly activities at East Beach. Competing teams have their eyes and shovels set on winning the prestigious Gold Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance generating ideas, developing designs, and assigning duties. On the day of the event, the teams – stretched along the beach front – meticu-
lously sculpt their piles of sand and work non-stop for five hours. The judging of the sculptures is rated on the originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. At the end of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day at the beach filled with fun, sand, and sun.
Please respect the hard work of our participants by not touching any of the sand sculptures even after the event. Many spectators visit the beach the next day, on Sunday,

The NMFH is working with the support and encouragement of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to open this exhibit on April 27, 2023. National Museum of Funeral History President/ CEO and curator of this exhibit states, “The exhibit will feature a certified copy of the Shroud from the
Archdiocese of Turin as well as displays discussing the established history and scientific studies of the Shroud. It presents the facts about the Shroud and allows visitors to draw their own conclusions about the identity of the “man of the Shroud. The Funeral Museum is a secular setting that provides the opportunity to share the facts and information about the Shroud with a broad cross-section of museum visitors.”

There are permanent collections of minerals, natural history exhibits, a planetarium with laser shows and an Imax theater, a butterfly habitat, a paleontology exhibit with dinosaurs, and a new chemistry hall. This place is very crowded, especially on weekends, and you should call in advance for reservations for the Imax, planetarium and butterfly exhibit.
