Special night to remember

T

he special people in South Devon who have made a difference to so many lives have been saluted at a glittering ceremony. Fourteen stars were feted as community heroes at the Herald Express South Devon Community Awards for 2016 held at the Imperial Hotel, Torquay, But many more were at the ceremony having been nominated for the impact their volunteering and community work has had on our lives.

Altogether some 150 people attended the glamorous presentations night which was hosted by TV and radio’s Judi Spiers.

Herald Express Editor Jim Parker said: “The number and quality of entries this year has been among the best ever making judging and selecting winners an almost impossible task.”

He said of all those nominated: “You are out in the community. You are leaders and heroes out in that community. But you don’t do it for any recognition or gain. You do it because you just do it. Special people doing special things.”

Jim said the judges had heard some remarkable stories of courage, commitment and heroism. “Some make you smile. Others bring a tear to your eye. These are stories that reflect all that is the best in South Devon where its passionate people make it such a great place to live and work.”

Judges were Jim Parker, Sir Richard Ibbotson, chairman of the South Devon Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Judi Spiers, Stephen Criddle, principal at South Devon College, and James Cross, managing partner of Kitsons Solicitors.

Entertainment on the night was provided by Cockington School Choir, the BBC Star for Christmas competition winners.

OME the loudest cheers of the night came when it was announced that this year there is not just one YOung Hero of the Year.

Jo i n t w i n n e r s o f t h e Young Hero of the Year Award (U18) were Lottie Bryon- Edmond, Jaimee Luscombe, Nathaniel Gale, Ella Abraham and Lacy James.

Lottie, five, from Torquay, Jaimee, 11, from Brixham, and Nathaniel, seven, from Totnes, returned home from the British T ransplant Games with a haul of medals.

Ella Abraham, nine, had 11 inches of her hair cut off for the Little Princess Trust.

She has also raised over £750 which was split between the Little Princess Trust and Bloodwise, which funds research and provides support to improve blood cancer pa-

W

hen told he had been nominated as Carer of the Ye a r, M i k e Clayton who has been a Cruse Bereavement Care volunteer for 22 years, thought someone was pulling his leg.

So he was delighted when his name was announced.

“I really didn’t expect it,” he said. “I wasn’t even aware I had been nominated until I had the phone call from the Herald Express.

“I am very pleased and very proud.”

Mike has given his time and expertise to support both adults and children.

He also visits HMP Channings Wood as a Cruse volunteer to support offenders who ask for bereavement counselling.

He has listened to many stories, some quite horrific, but he is always ready to give his time to support someone who needs it.

EAT THAT FROG

S

OME of the loudest cheers of the night were for two formidable fundraisers who shared the Fundraiser of the Year Award.

The winners were Cathy Griffiths who set up ‘Jack’s SCBU Fundraising’ which raises money for the Torbay Special Care Baby Unit and Lynne Hookings an outstanding fundraiser for the Torbay Hospital League of Friends, Wellswood branch, for the past 15 years and now vice-president of the League. The Friends recently raised a staggering £1.6 million for Torbay Hospital’s Critical Care Appeal Cathy set up the fund after she and her baby boy experienced the exceptional care in Torbay Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.

Lynne: “I am honoured and also humbled to accept this award. We both know how hard fundraising is, we do it with the best will in the world.

But it was the whole team behind me, some 450 volunteers which makes the Friends so special, we are all volunteers helping our local hospital.”

Cathy said she was lost for words but paid tribute to three of the nurses who originally cared for her son, now discharged, whose care inspired her to fundraise for the ward — Vanessa Diamond, Jane Read, and Hannah Vernon and fellow fundraisers Sophie, Kayleigh, Jasmine, Sarah,

Susie, Julie, Olwyn, Kathy and Lucy.

“I wouldn’t be here but for the work of these guys. The number of messages we get thanking us for being there not just for the children but for the parents who go through some traumatic times.”

Good Neighbour Award MARION BATT

HERE were screams of delight from her supporters when Marion Batt was announced as the winner of the Good Neighbour Award.

The award goes to a very special person whose acts of kindness mean so much to others and can be life supporting and changing. A person who seeks no regard and acts without thinking twice and whose kindness and g raciousness have touched those around them and deepened the sense of b e l o n g i n g t o t h e c o mmunity.

Typically selflessly Marion, an administrator at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School thanked her neighbours where she lives in Barton, Torquay, Tracey Stuart Roberts and Lyn Comley who had nominated her saying: “They are just as good neighbours as maybe I

She said the award had been a complete surprise.

MIKE LOCK

EAD teacher at Combe Pafford School for more than 20 years, Mike Lock, was named as Teacher of the Year.

Through his work at the school in Watcombe which caters for pupils aged eight to 19 who have moderate learning difficulties, physical difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Condition or complex needs, he has positively influenced the lives of thousands, giving them the chance to shine and take up employment.

He said: “I feel a bit of a fraud because if you work in a school it is not just down to one person but everyone who works there. I am in the sunshine but all the work is done under the water. This is testament to all the work done at the school.”

His nominator said: “Over many years Mike has displayed total commitment to the students, ensuring they thrive in the adult world. He displays great affection for the duty of being head teacher but retains true affection from the staff,

HE special award of the year for a very special person, the Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Jane English, the longest-serving headteacher in Torbay.

It’s another award for Jane’s mantlepiece as the Paignton Community and Sports Academy’s principal, recently collected one of the national ‘Oscars of the teaching world’ a Gold Plato Award in the UK Pearson Teaching Award again for Lifetime Achievement.

“Her enthusiasm and passion for her job, the people she has worked with and the thousands of youngsters she has nurtured, developed and looked after during some pretty tough and challenging times has never waned. She has been an example to others and a true star.”

COOPING the Environmental Hero Award was ‘Dangerous Dad’ Ian Blackwell.

He won the award as a champion on green issues who endeavours to make the world around him a better place.

Ian has been involved in Friends of the Earth South Hams for ten years and also is a regular walk leader for the South Devon AONB. He was project manager from 2012-16 at Plymouth University for The Natural Connections Project, the largest outdoor learning project in the UK, which supported 125 schools in the South West, many of them in Torbay and South Devon.

But he wasn’t able to be at the ceremony because he was in Budapest setting up another of the Dangerous Dads group which he foun-
