S

OUTH Devon’s brightest and best in the tourism and hospitality industry were honoured at the English Riviera and South Devon Tourism and Hospitality Awards 2016. Around 400 people attending the event, held at the Riviera International Conference Centre in Torquay, heard success stories from the very best of the area’s tourism and hospitality sector. Editor of the Herald Express, Jim Parker, introduced the awards as a celebration of the very best that Torbay and South Devon has to offer. The 25 Boutique B&B in Torquay walked away with the top prize, winning the prestigious Tourism and Hospitality Business of the Year Award, as well as sharing Gold in the Bed & Breakfast Guest House and Inn of the Year with Kaywana Hall in Kingswear. They said: “Wow! We are little bit shocked by this to be honest. We work really hard. We have been here for about 18 months and we really love Torquay. Across the whole of Torbay and South Devon we have some fantastic businesses and we all just need to keep working together for the future of everyone’s business. Thank you very much for the award. It means so much.” Colin Matthews from the Babbacombe Theatre was presented with a special award for his Outstanding Contribution to Tourism. Colin said: “What I am not tired of is creating shows that entertain so many people. It has been a wonderful 30 years at the Babbacombe Theatre. You cannot have a successful business without a great team to work with you. I have had the very best and that is why we are still surviving after 30 years. “I couldn’t have possibly done what I have done over the years without a very special lady. She has been the biggest support and I couldn’t have done what I

have done without my dear wife Maggie. “To those who nominated me for this award, which I am so thrilled about, I would like to thank you, and also to all of those who make tourism in Torbay and South Devon and beyond such a success.” Jim Parker said: “By all accounts, it has been a brilliant summer season for some of you, and that’s not just down to that yellow thing in the sky. It is also down to you and the hard work, commitment, innovation and investment you have put into your hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, pubs, cafes and attractions. “It is that resilience which abounds in the room tonight and it is that tenacity and success these awards recognise and we would like to celebrate with you tonight. The awards are getting bigger and better year by year. Entries are up. So are the numbers celebrating tonight and, just as importantly, the quality of the entries is the best it has ever been. “We are once again indebted to Wollen Michelmore, our headline partners, for their continued support without which these awards would not be possible. A huge thanks to Chris Hart, Clive Meredith and the team. “In my humble opinion, Torbay, the English Riviera and South Devon are at the crossroads. The bypass is here and up and running and what a success that has been. But what we need to do – and it has been said many times before – is to make sure that the highway is a road into our resort and not just out. “That can only be achieved with the right message from us - a message that says to developers we are open for business. We want your investment. We want your money and the new jobs that will be created. “We have regeneration projects and masterplans waiting to happen but waiting is the key word here. Actually happening just has to replace it. Let’s get on with Torwood Street and Oldway. Let’s decide one way or the other about the Pavilion, and let’s sort out our town centres before it really is too late.

“We just cannot afford to waste the natural beauty that is the English Riviera. We need to capitalise on that for the sake of our children and their children and put our own desires and somewhat old fashioned wishes to one side.” In his speech, Chris Hart, chair of the English Riviera Tourism Company and also chief executive of Wollen Michelmore, said: “We are keen to promote our involvement in the community of Devon. I have chaired the board of the ERTC for nearly six years and it has been an honour and a privilege to work with such great board members throughout that time. “We have turned the tide and had five

years of continuous tourism growth, in contrast to the decline that seaside destinations have seen nationally. “The more that we all work together in partnership, the brighter the future will be for everyone in the industry across this great county. I can speak for all of the judges and say that this year the standard of entrants across all categories was particularly high, certainly the highest since it began five years ago. “There has been huge investment in many businesses across South Devon and a focus on maintaining a

high level of customer service. You are all winners and are a great success.” The panel of judges was chaired by Richard Cuming. Category sponsors were: Bays Brewery, Bidvest, Bishop Fleming, Inter-Line, Shearings Holidays, South Devon College, Market Walk, TLH Leisure Resort and Warwick Event Services. Entertainment was provided by Bill Ding and the Skyscrapers, who regularly play with some of the UK’s biggest names, including Joss Stone.

HERE were joint winners in the Spa and Wellbeing Experience of the Year category – Ilsington Country House Hotel and Salcombe Harbour Hotel. Richard Hassell, owner of the Ilsington Country House and Spa, said: “I am delighted to have won this award. It is a testament to investment within your business and it is great that it is paying off. “This will help us in the future going forward and the award ceremony makes us strive and work hard to get these awards. “We will continue to work hard and will continue to invest in the area. “I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make sure that we won this award. The new spa opened in March 2015 and is still in its growth phase, enjoying healthy increases month on month. Spa Packages (use of the spa with other services - treatments, teas, meals etc) account for approximately 20 per cent of the growth figures, 50 per cent is from members of the Spa and the remainder from hotel guests. In the last year, more spa packages have been introduced which have contributed greatly to its food and beverage sales and treatments. Re-opened in 2013, following an extensive multi-million pound refurbishment, the landmark Marine Hotel was transformed into a stylish harbour hotel on the edge of Salcombe Estuary, complete with the Harbour Spa, private cinema, Jetty restaurant and wide outdoor terraces; all taking in the panoramic vista. It has already received national acclaim, being named one of the UK’s ‘Ultimate British Hotels’ by the Sunday Times for two consecutive years. Designed with the full guest experience in mind, a multi-million pound refurbishment programme resulted in a hotel that exceeds all expectations, with increased sales, occupancy and average daily rates.

ADIO 1 Big Weekend was named Tourism Event of the Year. Cllr Jeremy Christophers, leader of Teignbridge Council, said: “The Radio 1 Big Weekend was the best thing that I have ever done as the leader of the council. It is only through the partnership of working with Exeter City Council and Powderham Castle as an amazing venue that meant that we could host such an epic event. “We knew that it would extend the holiday season and I know, speaking to lots of people in Teignbridge, that it has been the most amazing summer for tourism, so well done. “The other thing that it did was to reach out to young people. It is only when you to make something rise up out of the ground that they come to play, and boy, did they come to play. They had the most amazing time and our youth really deserve to have fun in the sun. “It always felt very special, but did involve a lot of work in the background.

The dedication that all of our officers put into this was amazing. The tragedy is that it is a one-off, but it was all about doing something for our youth, and we did it.” Charlie Courtenay, Earl of Devon, said: “It was an honour to work with Teignbridge and Exeter councils to bring Radio 1’s Big Weekend to Devon. It was a pleasure to welcome so many West Coun-
