The Boy Scout’s houseboats were designed to be the first rest in a 5-day, 60 mile kayak trail through the Atchafalaya Basin. The project accommodates sleeping, living, and cooking for up to 36 people, as well as a science lab, fishing areas, and storage.

In order to maximize the performance of the boats on minimal energy, their skins were designed to vent or release air when needed for thermal control.

The boats are self-sufficient and intended to transform and operate effortlessly by one’s use of the space.

The skin of the boats consists of curved polycarbonate sheets in a double layer with the interior layer painted black on the southern portions of the boats. This added heat radiation in the wall cavity causes variances in wind and pressure to vent out hot air in the summer and cycle it through the space in the winter.

In Louisiana, there is a strong reverence for the culture of the past reverberating through the generations, however, the same respect is often not given the culture of the present. Humanity is embarking on a period of enormous transference in human connectivity, and this universality quickly pervades existing social, societal, and physical structures. What Louisiana is defines what Louisiana will be. It is not to say that the universality of presently evolving Southern culture is negative in all aspects, however, that the people of Southern Louisiana seem to value the more personally invested, less economically centered culture of past times--moments in time and culture that produced reflections like the stories of Chopin, community crawfish boils, and artifacts carefully crafted for their beauty as well as their purpose--over the unbiased hoarding of information, experience, and wealth.

This nostalgia, if critical, can be a great strength, however, if uncritical, it can cause Louisianans to misattribute the successes of past cultures to the fact that they existed previously, rather than truly understanding why they were successful. Which, consequentially, can be a grave devaluation of the present. Devaluing the people or culture of the present strips people of dignity, causes lapses in accountability, and removes ambition or incentive for improvement. These are the dangers of not critically defining contemporary culture through the built environment.

Once one accurately assesses past accomplishments, these successes can be perpetuated while expanding the culture of South Louisiana into contemporaneous global efforts, rather than simply lamenting on days let slip by. The present condition must be critical of both the existing and the possible, presenting an honest definition for what it is-what We are.

To combat this overwhelming generalization based on economic devotion and personal convenience, emphasis was placed on making the built environment reverberate with ideas and intelligences of and for the Southern commonplace. To encourage a deeper awareness for our consumption as well as discourage the transport of goods over long distances, the Cajun meat market and diner on site can house fresh chickens in the yard adjacent to the intersection, and processing can be handled on site. There are three coups and two ranges that can house 20-30 chickens at a time. In order to not only to promote awareness at the community scale but also the individual, electricity and water consumption meters are placed in each apartment.

A sizeable concrete tower cistern located centrally on site will collect rainwater and recycled gray water from the constructed wetland to be used for irrigation. This rainwater collection and gray water plumbing is visible throughout the building, however, it is emphasized in the Vermillion Waterway Museum, drawing on the ability to make analogies through architecture and geography to community and humanity.

West Elevation

Emphasis was placed on exposing the relationships of different systems as they compose the building. By allowing each system to perform its role and honestly displaying the functions of those systems to the public, awareness can be raised about the roles of users in the maintenance and operation of buildings. Showing users, for example, where a delivery system meets a piece of structure that separates public and private can help them to understand their real physical environment by understanding the purpose of individual elements.

The physical state of Louisiana makes ever more present the geographical symphony of systems that constantly occurs around human affairs. Exposing these systems by constantly evolving, Southern Louisiana’s physical realm contributes to human consciousness about the present climactic situation, as well as inhibits success, as measured from the perspective of modern economic ideals. Louisiana consistently ranks near the bottom in median household and per capita income. Although this may be evaluated as a misfortune, Louisianans are afforded the opportunity to assess criteria for success other than the economic, however, in order to discover these new criteria, one must turn to the restricting dimensions that initially abetted failure in the human system--the landscape.

The landscape of Louisiana is constantly evolving to expand and contract its dimensions both physically and in time. The only intention, if one may be found, is the perpetuation of the interminable contradictions that it consists of.

In attempting to discover its goal by isolating constants and ignoring the wealth of information that is variable--and equally pertinent-one realizes that it is this variability that begets progress. A variability that is inherently evident in natural systems, quite often present in human economic or social endeavors, but absent from many contemporary artifacts or buildings.

This variability is resultant of the absence of singular purpose and an acceptance of divergent outcomes.

As technological capabilities have increased dramatically in recent periods, human foresight regarding technological variations and unintended outcomes has remained relatively static because of this human obsession with the definitive.

The spoil bank is an example of man’s shortsighted manipulation of the physical. Louisiana has a very large economic reliance on oil and the success of the oil industry. Access canals have been dredged through out the state, mostly the southern portion, in order to propagate this revenue system. The material that is removed is placed aside these canals, creating what is called a spoil bank. Spoil banks cause interruptions in ecological and hydrological harmonies at varying scales, however, one of the more dangerous outcomes of the spoil bank is the resulting idea that a static interference in a variable environment can have enduring success.

In order to combat this stasis of physicality, this project was designed with a type of natural variability in mind; its only purpose being to benefit human welfare by manipulating the physical environment. As the state of Louisiana is constantly in physical change, it was conceived that this project should also be in a state of perpetual evolution, not only exploiting its successes but exposing its failures to shape not only the physical environment, but the human consciousness of place as well.

The resulting design is a spined, polygonal skeleton that allows for contortion and movement through space at the mercy of the geolocgical and hydrological forces in the landscape. To reinforce the adaptability of infrastructure through time, the project was designed with a variable programming that can take effect, or not, depending on situational context. As the biodegradable exterior (composed of woody vegetation and fibrous vegetative infill) decomposes, the structure will become more porous, and will begin to affect sediment deposition more than water flow. Continuing further into its lifespan, the structure will begin to move due to the effects of hurricanes, es. flooding, and other natural processes.

This reallocation will maximize the wo effectiveness of the structures final two on, roles, the prevention of coastal erosion, tat and the creation of viable oyster habitat far into the future. ink By attempting to rethink on, the purposes, implementation, and consequences of static or any ize infrastructure, one can begin to maximize ps its efficiency and create relationships rly between interconnected or nearly an connected systems that shape human lives and activity, as well as the landscape. pe.

RITUAL

project description: Do heavy research and develop an architectural response to a social problem.

2015

Architecture should respond as another media for the documentation of human activity, environmental systematic change, and socio-cultural values in a manner more accessible by the typical user. It should be a storyteller of more easily digestible ideas—folk ideas.

This project is intended to bring together those storytelling functions from varying cycles and contexts of program. The resultant building operates as a mausoleum, funeral home, and eatery.

The project is located adjacent to an existing graveyard, and has an axial relationship with the church on site. The program accommodates visitors with recording rooms, within which they may document and store audio files about the deceased, a small restaurant and dining area, for the casual passing on of stories or exchange of ideas, a funeral home for body preparation and memorial services, and a mausoleum that doubles the capacity of the existing graveyard.

Contemporary cultural influences in Southern Louisiana tend to consider success in a binary fashion. This project will seek to expand these considerations by bringing together programs that would previously not have engaged each other, presenting a more humanistically centered place of contemporary existence, and allowing for citizens to dictate more through community engagement and ritualism than through political means.

Storytelling and the process of architectural engagement are beautiful forms for the preservation of information. They both serve to shape the human experience and better human life. By exploiting the abilities for each to cross their standard disciplinary territories, one can explore what is possible in the progression of human understanding while still recording previous engagements with ideas, thereby eliminating the necessity to redirect human intellectual resources to the reengagement of those ideas. This is a model of true intellectual progression, one that neither neglects past successes nor dawdles on them.

The new Broussard and Litel residences, both located in rural areas south of Lake Charles, LA, are 12,000 and 8,000 SQFT respectively. My role in these two projects included completion of the Revit models-drawing foundations, plans, wall sections, and schedules--as well as coordinating with contractors and sub-contractors to resovle any unforseen issues and ensure that the buildings were built to specifications.

VET’S PARK

The new additions to the existing Veterans Memorial Park in Lake Charles, located along the lakefront, are to include 10 water jet cut corten panels representing the 5 branches of the US military mounted to large concrete bases as well as extensive electrical rennovations and additions. My role in this project was to coordinate construction with contractors via on-site meetings, issue ASIs to resolve potential discrepancies between the drawings and the existing site, review contractor submittals, and inspect completed work for quality.

WWTP ADMIN

Following the completion of new treatment facilities for the B and C districts of the City of Lake Charles Wastewater Division, the WWTP Administration building is intended to ease the oversight of these new plants.

The building process included various NFPA concerns as well as required zoning variances to accommodate the necessary inspection labs included in the building. My role in the project included the coordination of construction via contact with contractors, review of submittals and resubmittals, issuances and approv- 33 als of ASIs and Change Orders, as well as inspection of completed work.

DISTILLERY ADD.

The new additions to the Bayou Rum facilities in Lacassine, LA are to include a 6 phase rennovation and expansion of the existing distillery, added site storage and maintenance buildings, an expansion to the visitor’s center and gift shop, as well as an event center and barrel storage facility. The first phase of the project, which I was involved in, is to focus on this event center and barrel storage. My role in the project was in the creation of detailed renderings for approval by the client, as well as the completion of a bid set and construction set with my drawing concentration being on the foundations and site concrete coordinated with structural engineers.
