LOSS OF CORRESPONDENT BANKING WILL POSE SERIOUS THREATS TO THE REGION—PM

—Throws Guyana’s support behind annual US-Caribbean Banking Forum

Bridgetown, Barbados – (April 20, 2022) Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips today stated that the loss of correspondent banking, increase of the unbanked and disruption of the flow of remittance will pose serious threats to the economic and social stability of the Caribbean.

The senior government official made the statement while addressing a Caribbean Financial Access roundtable discussion today in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The Prime Minister joined several CARICOM leaders at the meeting and they all voted unanimously to launch an annual US-Caribbean Banking Forum roundtable meeting.

“Madam chair the loss of correspondent banking and the increase

of the unbanked is a security challenge to the Caribbean, and I’m happy that we’re discussing this and we have arrived at a position where we will have this annual roundtable to deal with the challenges, it will be an opportunity for us to share ideas and cooperate as we move forward.”

The Prime Minister added that Guyana is particularly interested in increasing correspondent banking, more so because the oil and gas economy will “propel us towards becoming an international financial centre”.

Correspondent banking facilitates country-to-country services and acts as an intermediary to facilitate wire transfers, conduct business transactions, accept deposits and gather documents on behalf of other banks.

in the one-day roundtable discussion on de-risking and correspondent banking came at a request from the Prime Minister of the Republic of Barbados, the Honourable Mia Mottley.

In a missive to His Excellency President Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mottley indicated the importance of Guyana’s participation.

“This encounter will provide the ideal opportunity for us to engage with major players in the financial services industry in order to find solutions for these intractable issues.”

She added that Guyana’s “presence will definitely be very instrumental and important in addressing the myriad of problems associated with these

issues”.

Prime Minister Phillips met with Prime Minister Mottley and Chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, US Congresswoman Maxine Waters on Tuesday.

He is also expected to take part in a meeting with the CARICOM Heads of Government and a Special US Envoy led by US State

representative Waters this evening.

The other regional leaders at the event include the President of Suriname, H.E Chandrikapersad Santokhi; the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Keith Rowley; the Prime Minister of Belize, the Honourable John Antonio Briceño, the Prime Minister of Dominica, the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit; the Prime Minister of Grenada, the Honourable Keith Mitchell; the Prime Minister of St Lucia, the Honourable Philip Pierre and the Premier of the Cayman Islands, the Honourable Wayne Panton along with Ministerial representatives from Jamaica and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Attorney-at-law Nirvan Singh

Son of former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Carl Singh, has been charged under the Racial Hostility Act over allegedly calling a female security guard names that were degrading.

The defendant, Attorney-at-law Nirvan Singh, appeared before info@guyanapostonline.com

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on a private criminal charge.

Singh on March 20, at Middle and Cummings Streets, allegedly uttered words in a public place thus inciting racial hostility against Shawnnette Bollers who is of Afro-Guyanese.

He allegedly calling her

‘black monkey’ and also stated that ‘black people have no purpose in life’.

Attorney Singh denied the allegation and was placed on $100,000 bail.

He was also ordered to return to court on the May 18th.

Ms. Bollers is being represented by Attorneyat-law Eusi Anderson.

Street vendors who were given an inch but then took a yard and built their permanent structures where these should have been temporary are being removed. The programme began outside the Stabroek Market and several areas around the market.

These areas were cleaned while markers

were put in place to regularise vending as part of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council Cleanup Exercise.

The Clean-up Exercise which started just after 7:00 hours today, saw many illegal stalls being removed. The surroundings were also cleaned in the Stabroek

area.

This initiative comes months after a request from the citizens and the central government for the council to look into improving the image of the market.

be addressed and several council decisions were made to operate on the markets.

As such, the vendors who were only given temporary permission to sell their goods during the Christmas holidays were removed and the surroundings were cleaned.

Speaking on the exercise, the Mayor of Georgetown, Mr. Ubraj Narine, explained that for too long the market has been in chaos and it’s time to fix the situation and put a system in place.

“The vendors will continue to operate in a

clean, neat, and organized manner. We must put some kind of system in place. I don’t believe that we should only have a clean-up exercise for one or two days.

“We should put systems in place and when we put systems in place; we will be able to regularize those vendors,” Mayor Narine said.

Mayor Narine also said that while the move is one that is commended at this time, there is a need for street vendors to be properly accommodated in the future and that will only come if the Mayor City Council and

Central Government work together.

“If we work together as a team with the central government, we need to get a proper place for these vendors to operate. We cannot continue to crucify and chastise vendors.

They have a role to play as well.

“You want to move them out; you want to get rid of them. What will they do to provide for their children?” Mayor Narine queried.

The Mayor said that vending remains the backbone of the economy.

This will not stop but it has to be in an orderly fashion.

Murder accused remanded for killing 19-year-old teacher

A 21-year-old who claimed that a knife stuck to a 19-year-old girl’s neck was an accident was charged and remanded to jail for murder, yesterday.

The accused, Joel Spooner, of Craig, East

Bank Demerara (EBD) appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge which read that between April 12 and 13, at Craig, EBD, he murdered Chinese Walks, the mother of a one-yearold boy and a teacher.

Spooner was later remanded to jail until a later date in the new month.

Reports are that during the time of the murder, Spooner and Walks had lived together.

TRIBUTES COME IN FOR MR. HENRY RODNEY

Guyanese actor Henry Rodney

The Ministry of Education has expressed its sympathy to the family of legendary Guyanese actor Henry Rodney who passed away on April 7 at the

Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, New York City.

For years, Mr. Rodney kept Guyanese entertained through his many roles on the theatre stage and on television.

Over the past four decades, he performed in shows such as, “Nothing to Laugh About” and the “Link Show.”

He was most popularly known as Franklin, a character he played in the local television sitcom, “Agree to Disagree”.

Mr. Rodney was passionate about the theatrical arts and

made several valuable contributions to society.

He was one of the founding lecturers at the National Drama School. In addition, he worked along with the Ministry of Education in organizing and hosting cultural events.

He also lent his support to the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security as a Child Rights and Women’s Rights advocate.

The talented thespian spent over 35 years in the country’s education system as a Drama, English and Literature

Teacher. He taught at St. Joseph’s High School, St. Rose’s High School, North Georgetown High School, APEX Academy, Cyril Potter College of Education, and the Marian Academy.

He also worked along with the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA).

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, said that she was grateful for his invaluable contributions which she believes will live on in all those he touched. The country is poorer without him.

Mr. Rodney has indeed left his mark on Guyanese society. He was a true son of the soil and his rich contributions to this nation will forever be treasured.

And CineGuyana extends sincere condolences to the family of the late Henry St. Cyprian Rodney and to the Theatre and MultiMedia Fraternity on his passing.

Henry’s excellent talents and refreshing personality enriched the many Films in which he appeared. He was a joy to work with as he

contributed to teambuilding and readily shared his experience and skills.

While he appeared in films produced by CineGuyana, including “The Bottle”, Henry also acted in “Guyana 1838”, “Jezebel” and several music videos including “Boogie Man”.

Guyana is the poorer

by Henry Rodney’s passing, but we are confident that his legacy will be preserved through the work he has left with us.

Viewing of some of his work is being arranged.
