time. I can’t wait for my next trip. I have half a dozen new places to tour already. Keep up the great work. I will keep reading your magazine often for inspiration. Ted Servus First let me say thank you and wow! When I discovered your magazine, it was like a breath of real fresh air - a publication about Guyana that doesn’t bore readers by focusing on race, politics, religion and crime. It’s absolutely amazing because I have never seen Mashramani, Phagwah and other celebrations chronicled the way it was displayed in GEM. Keep on course; I like what you are doing. Thanks again. - Ruth Versammy, Queens, NY

We welcome comments, criticisms and ideas from you. Let us know what you think about this edition. Send comments to letters@gemmagonline.com. All letters may be edited for space, clarity and civility.

We’ve been reading GEM for about 5 years now and find it to be by far the most practical and relevant magazine for Guyana. It is certainly the one we look forward to most eagerly. The Savvy Sister and icon articles and the coverage of all the happenings in Guyana are just great! Keep them coming. – Sasha Ramnauth My husband and I, along with our two teenage sons, live in Toronto, Canada, and we haven’t visited Guyana since the kids were born. We all enjoy reading your magazine and it really is “the only” magazine we subscribe to. It makes for a great gift, be it birthday or Christmas, whatever the occasion. I would highly recommend gift subscriptions for those people who “have everything.” We have been subscribers for 3 years. - April and Dennis Persaud Congratulations on your 10-year anniversary. I came across GEM about two years ago by coincidence. I enjoyed the content especially your travel section. There are so many great places in Guyana to go. Fortunately for me, I am able to travel to the country every year, so I try to visit a different area each time. I am a native Berbician who has been living in New Orleans, USA since 1975. Last year I was blessed to get an opportunity to visit Kaieteur Falls for the first

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the 20 0 4 - 2 0 14 swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. – Ecclesiastes 9:11 New International Version Dear Valued Reader, We l c o m e t o t h e 1 0 t h y e a r anniversary edition of GEM. In the decade since we launched, many competitors have come and gone. Others have attempted to duplicate our concept, but have failed. What they all missed was this: GEM has and will always be about Guyana, you our loyal readers and advertisers and never about us and our egos. I am both honored and humbled to be the Publisher of a magazine that brings together such a diverse and desired audience. It is a responsibility that I take very seriously. This issue takes a look back at 10 years of covering game-changers, places and events which have positively impacted our landscape. This GEM is filled with rare photos, extended features and much more. Let us say we have just about everything in it, except the kitchen sink.

Stage One- Obsession (Age 15-18) I copied almost every single style I saw in a magazine. It was like my personal reassurance that what I was wearing was legit and acceptable for society. Undoubtedly, this was the most expensive time in my fashion lifecycle that I wish to never return to. Consumed and swamped within MTV Shows and American Pop Culture, my wardrobe regurgitated everything that was trending at the time. Either I genuinely appreciated it or not, it really didn't make a difference. I bought it anyway. My purchasing behavior was purely influenced by this weird obsession of wearing "society-safe"clothes. I was literally a walking trend as you can see. The crop top, the skinny jeans and the minimalistic single strap shoe. So predictable... So typical... So forged my name should have been Trend John.

My Fashion Lifecycle Stage Four- Developing (24- to present) The journey to finding your personal style changes as much as you develop as a person. I don't think it can be measured even though I tried to summarize mine. As I continue to develop my personal style in my dear sunshine land Guyana, my journey is only one out of thousands that has been faced with many external influences. It makes me question where our local fashion industry stands. Should local designers re-analyze their consumer bases due to increased external influences? Should this influence affect their craft? Write me back at www.online-runway.com

Stage Two- Confidence and Fit (Age 19-22) I spent approximately four years studying, partying and stalking Ulyana Sergeenko's and Princess Diana's style religiously. During my four year period of living in Cardiff, I started a mental Pinterest board. I was fanatical over, fit and looking comfortable. At this stage I started to dodge trends and tried to become more aware of myself and my body. I gradually started to learn the difference between style and fashion. I thoroughly enjoyed living in a place that celebrated fashion individuality. I was so fixated in wearing what I wanted to, that on my graduation day I wore a fascinator on my head like it was my wedding. Like Chanel said fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.

Stage Three- Individuality (23) After I moved back home, everything changed. Maybe I should say improved. Dressing felt more like a test to some extent. However, it was like a test that I had the answers for. Conforming wasn't on the agenda. I dressed for myself... As easy as that may sound, it's a very difficult thing to do. Guyana is a difficult place to dress at times. However, I started to restore my relationship with custom made garments and bright hues. I found myself stuck in jersey or cotton due to the heat. Trying to maintain some amount of elegance despite the temperature, I started to fall back in love with my own style if this is even possible. I dressed for comfort.

K

.A. Juman-Yassin is a man with an extensive and diverse professional portfolio. In addition to his more than forty years practicing law in Guyana, Mr. JumanYassin has held several influential positions in a number of sports associations within Guyana, all of which he has juggled successfully as a family man. Georgetown born and bred, a graduate of Central High School, Mr. Juman-Yassin, found his way to the United Kingdom to study law in 1966. He relates that from a young age, he knew exactly what he wanted to do in life. He was the first lawyer in his family, much to the 40 | GEM 2014 10th

pride of his parents, who he thanks for their support and guidance. While in the UK, he was called to the bar at the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, officially becoming a qualified barrister. After returning to his home country, in 1971, he was called to the Guyana Bar and has been practicing ever since and is the lead attorney at his firm K.A. JumanYassin & Associates. Over the years, he was also accepted to practice his profession in the jurisdictions of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and Barbados. In 1992, he became a Magistrate and eventually the Chief Magistrate, until he resigned from the post in

1997. Upon his resignation from the Magistracy, he resumed his private practice. During his time serving the Judiciary, he had the opportunity to have sat in most of the Magistrates Courts of Guyana and presided over several high profile cases. He describes his legal career as one that is fulfilling and satisfying and will do it all over again. His active involvement as a sports administrator in Guyana began in 1973 when he became a member of the Everest Cricket Club. He served in various executive positions, as Secretary, Selector and Club President on many occasions. He represented Everest

Cricket Club on the Guyana Cricket Board and was elected the Vice President under the Presidency of Joe Solomon. Under his administration of Everest Cricket Club, a tennis court was built and the Club became a member of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association. He represented the Everest Cricket Club at the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association and became its representative on the Guyana Olympic Association (G.O.A.). He was later elected as a Vice -President of the GOA and in 1996 was elected as President of the GOA, a position which he still holds.

K. Yassin with his wife Bernadette

As President and member of the GOA, Mr. Juman-Yassin had the distinct pleasure of attending several Olympic Games, in Sydney (2000), Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London (2012). He was the Chef-deMission during the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002, when national athlete, Aliann Pompey won gold in the 400 meters. He has also represented Guyana at several GOA conferences, the Association of National Olympic Committees, PANAM Sports Organisation, Commonwealth Games Federation ( and is currently the Vice President for the Americas), Central American and Caribbean Organisation, and ODESUR. In 2003, he became an Executive Member of the PANAM Sports Organisation and served two terms in such a capacity. Even with a very active legal career and his involvement in Guyana sports, Mr. Juman-Yassin finds the time to give back to the community, through his membership and participation in Rotary Club of Georgetown. He joined the Rotary about fifteen years ago and was elected President in 1999

K.A. Juman-Yassin to 2000, and was the AssistantGovernor for the Rotary Clubs of Guyana for the years July 2011 to June 2013. Mr. Juman-Yassin has also spoken publicly about his concerns regarding the back log in the judicial system and the need for proper drug rehabilitation centre(s) to be sent up by the Government of Guyana.

Yassin with President Donald Ramotar (centre) and another guest.

So what is his advice for success? He states it is best, from an early age, that young people decide what they want out of life, and follow the path to achieve that objective. It is not wrong to be ambitious but be honest to yourself, family and community. Life is never static and one must always try to learn new things. One must not be ashamed to apologise for any mistakes made in life, and that pride is a factor that hold many people back. Benefit from your experiences and more so, those of others.

Reignite the Flame in Your Relationship Text: Coretta Corbin-Rival

I

n the beginning of most new relationships, couples are unable keep their hands off each other. After a year or two of dating, however, this passion may fade and the relationship becomes stale, causing their sexual encounters to be routine and boring. This is because many couples fail to realize that keeping the spark in a relationship takes work the way logs must be continually added to a fire to keep it burning. Some ways in which you could spice-up your love life this valentine if it has fallen into a rut are: Enhance the mood: Surprise your special someone by preparing your bedroom as a sensual haven. Turn the lights down low or light scented candles to create an erotic ambience to the experience. Sprinkle the petals of roses, especially red or lavender over your white satin sheets. Research shows that roses have been used for centuries to signal passion in romance, and its scent used to trigger the sensual desires in lovers. A recent research done on 31 male volunteers showed a 40 percent increase in the arousal rate of these men at the scent of lavender.

46 | GEM 2014 10th

Anniversary

Foreplay: In all relationships, foreplay is an essential part of putting and keeping that special someone in the mood. Foreplay should be done throughout the day or take place right before every sexual encounter. One way to start the day this valentine is to give him a racy picture of your self framed and wrapped in gift paper before he leaves for work. If you do not have a picture, put one of your thongs in a small gift box and place it in his pocket or briefcase. This will give him a pleasant surprise when he reaches his hand in his pocket or briefcase during the day. Focus on each other: Spend time having a long bubble bath or showering together. Make sure to leisurely caress every part of his body and have him do the same for you. A full body massage helps to remove the kinks of a stressful day and it is always a great way to spend time together. Taking the time to message and caress each other helps couples to refocus and reconnect. Many experts believe that the simple act of touching helps to induce relaxation by reducing the

anxiety and tension in a person. So, make sure you keep your hands on your partner on cupid’s special day just like you did when you first met and couldn’t get enough of each other. Plan romantic retreat: On this special day, behave as if you are on your honeymoon and surprise your man with a romantic escape to a cozy Inn. Arrange for a limousine to take you there and make sure to order room service complete with wine or champagne for two. While on your get away, take the time to watch the sunset together or to go for a long stroll hand in hand. Be adventurous: Sometimes trying a new position during sex or a new location could help reconnect couples and put the passion back in their relationship. The excitement of a new location or new way of doing things adds an erotic feel to the experience which makes couples feel alive and eager to be together.

HEALTH BEAT

Milk M

ilk has been proven to build your bones and teeth as well as promote the healthy function of your muscles and blood vessels. Recent research suggests that the balance of nutrients in milk may help refuel the muscles after a workout.

is considered nature’s wellness drink pasteurisation (UHT) process to ensure that is free from harmful bacteria, but it is as close to the cow as you can get and has that great milk taste.

Reconstituted or recombined milk is a product resulting from the recombining of milk constituents with fluid milk or water. Fresh milk properly pasteurized is naturally to be preferred to any reconstituted milk because it is significantly more nutritious.

Some nutritionists recommend drinking three glasses of non-fat or low-fat milk daily, to provide 100% of our calcium needs and 75% of our vitamin D needs. Each glass of Moo! is packed full of goodness. All versions of Moo! contain 30% of the daily recommended allowance of calcium. You get all that plus potassium, vitamins A, B12, D, and it tastes great!

Milk reconstituted from powdered milk and other milk constituents go through a number of processes to make it consumer-ready, thus reducing its nutritional value. The apparent digestibility of the protein, sugars and fat from fresh whole milk is considerably higher than that of reconstituted milk.

Moo! Full Cream and Low Fat Evaporated milks are made from 100% fresh cows’ milk and have a rich, creamy texture that can only come from real milk fat. They are never filled with vegetable oil to replace natural milk fat like some of the other evaporated milks on the market.

Moo! is available in Full Cream, Low Fat and Skimmed Milk versions. It is made from fresh milk, never reconstituted from milk powder. Moo! Milk has no additives and is milk the way nature intended it. It goes through the ultra-

Our family also includes Condensed Milk that is made from fresh cow’s milk with no chemical additives and comes in a new, resealable squeeze pack that allows you to savour every last drop of its sweetness. With Moo! Milk you won’t have to walk to the cowshed with a bucket to get it this fresh. We do all the work and you get the goodness. Remember, Moo! Milk products are always made from 100% fresh cow’s milk, never milk powder like many other UHT milks on the local market. That’s our promise to you. What are you waiting for? Drink up! Mithai - Guyana Style Text and photography: NAMILCO

Ingredients: • 1 packet Maid Marian Parsad/Halwa Flour Mix Photograph • 6 ozs margarine • 3/4 tbsp baking powder • 1/4 tin condensed milk • 1/3 finely grated coconut • 1/2 tbsp full essence • 1/2 tbsp ground aniseed • Evaporated milk to form dough • Oil to fry For the syrup: • 1lb white sugar • 1/2 pt.water • 2 pieces of spice (cinnamon stick) • An alternative to the syrup (Sift icing sugar over mithai when they are still warm) Preparation: Combine all ingredients together until the mixture resembles bread crumbs. Mix with enough milk to form dough. Set aside for a while.

Parsad

Divide into approximately 2 or 3 balls. Roll out each ball to a thickness of approximately 1” and cut into squares or fingers. Deep fry in oil until brown. Boil syrup to 2 to 3 thread consistency* then pour onto cooked mithai and gently toss. *Testing the Syrup: To do this, dip a wooden spatula in the syrup and lift out. Allow to cool for a few seconds as it will be very hot at first. Now touch the syrup with a clean forefinger and then touch your thumb and forefinger together and pull apart gently. Keep boiling the syrup gently until you reach the consistency called for in the recipe. Stages progress fairly quickly after a point, so check frequently. Two-thread consistency is when a two threads are formed (and do not break) when your forefinger and thumb are pulled apart gently. This stage is also called the soft ball stage – when a drop of syrup of this consistency is dropped into a bowl of cold water, it forms a soft ball. Three-thread consistency is when a three threads are formed (and do not break) when your forefinger and your thumb are pulled apart gently. This stage is also called the hard ball stage – when a drop of syrup of this consistency is dropped into a bowl of cold water, it forms a hard ball. 58 | GEM 2014 10th

Most resident bird species can be seen year round in many areas, while others like the Guianan Cockof-the-Rock are seen only in remote locations in the rainforest. In the city of Georgetown alone, there are an estimated 200 species from 39 families. There are two main reasons why the city is so bird-rich. One is it's unique geographic position, right at where the Demerara River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The other reason is that it has an important migratory corridor used by Caribbean and North American birds.

Doves on a branch

pigeons, doves, herons and other birds perched on fences, electrical wires, roof tops, in canals and just about any spot where a food source is available. Birds diets vary, but insects, snails, snakes, fruits, weeds, fish and road kills are quiet popular. Other areas known for concentrated bird life are the Iwokrama International Centre, the Botanical Gardens, Promenade Gardens, National Park, along the coast Atlantic coast and the Linden / Soesdyke Highway. Birds in Guyana are quite popular among locals also, as parrots, macaws, towa towas and domesticated fowls, ducks and turkeys are kept as pets, for food or for the wildlife exporting business. As stakeholders in the tourism industry continue to aggressively market Guyana as a birding destination, birding enthusiasts are expected to flock here to try and get glimpses of some of the rarest and most beautiful birds on the planet.
