By Francis Quamina Farrier ONE of the news items in the Sunday Chronicle of February 23, 1986, had the headline, “Council launches campaign against stray animals”. Accompanying the article was a photograph of the then First Citizen of the country’s capital city, Georgetown, Mayor Robroy Whyte. That perennial problem of stray animals roaming the streets of Georgetown has been with Guyanese for a very long time, and it seems to be a problem which is just not

going away anytime soon. However, the Stray Catchers Division of the Ministry of Public Security has been on the job with many challenges.

Thirty years ago, when Mayor Robroy Whyte, who was from Agricola, was some years later succeeded by another Mayor from Agricola in the person of Mayor Ranwell Jordon, the Stray Catching Programme was still the responsibility of the Georgetown City Council. That is no longer the case, and the rounding-up of stray animals and their impounding has been the responsibility of

the Stray Catchers Department which was brought under the Ministry of Home Affairs, now renamed the Ministry of Public Security.

While I did not write that Chronicle feature article of February 23, 1986 about Mayor Robroy Whyte’s comments regarding stray animals roaming the streets of Georgetown, it is necessary for me to inform you that I have written and produced over a dozen printed articles and television news items about stray animals over the past 15 years. There was the instance when the former Minister of Home Affairs (the late) Ronald Gajraj, was challenged, as it were, by a small herd of cattle. Just one day earlier, the minister had made a strong public statement against stray animals roaming the city streets. At that time the minister was echoing what the city mayor had stated two decades earlier; that animals roaming the streets of Georgetown must stop.

At 09:30hrs the very next day, I received a phone call informing me that there were five

cows sitting on the parapet on Brickdam in front of the Ministry of Home Affairs, chewing their cuds, and by their very defiant posture, seemed to have been sending a clear message, if you will, to the minister, as to who was the boss in the situation. Arriving at the location, I took video footage of those cows lying on the parapet right in front of the ministry and included it in my “story of the day”. A brief exclusive interview with the minister was included in that television news item, in which Minister Gajraj alluded to the lawless cattle owners. Years later, the lawlessness continues as cattle still roam the streets of Georgetown.

Minister Ronald Gajraj passed away a few months ago but the problem remains.

Mayor Robroy Whyte also passed away many years ago, but the problem is still with the city, as well as with most other municipal and rural communities.

A worthwhile sacrifice -Son of Bartica massacre survivor still weeping over dad’s condition

By Telesha Ramnarine RAYMOND White is one of the fortunate survivors of the notorious Bartica massacre that occurred on February 17, 2008- exactly 11 years ago. The bullets that penetrated his body on that fateful night, now renders him unable to move, or do just about anything for himself.

Mr White, a father of three, was just 51 years old when he experienced this event that would change his life forever. He was in the vicinity of the Bartica Stelling, getting a ride home in his neighbour’s car.

While his neighbour was shot dead, Mr White, of One and a Half Miles, Potaro Road, sustained gunshot wounds about his body.

He wasn’t a target of the criminals, but was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“After that night when he met his tragedy; from then on, things took a turn for him,” Mr White’s 22-year-old son, Marlon, told the Pepperpot Magazine during an interview at their home in Bartica.

Marlon has decided to dedicate his entire life towards caring for his dad, which means always being at home so that he can attend to his every need. The problem is that Mr. White cannot communicate any of his needs, and hence it is important that someone always be around so as to be able to observe him.

Mr. White’s wife, Erma, is busy during the day working so as to help ends meet in the home. Prior to the incident, her husband, who was a businessman, took care of everything.

And it is this thought that constantly resonates with Marlon. “I love my father because he used to do everything for me; I didn’t have to do anything,” he expressed, shortly before departing from the interview for a while.

Marlon was too emotional to continue speaking about his dad and needed a few minutes to regain control of his feelings.

It hurts him terribly to see how his dad’s life changed from being in control of their family to now sitting in a chair all day long with the radio as his only company on most days.

Explaining what his own life is like at the moment, Marlon says: “My father can’t do anything, so I take care of him. I have to do everything for him; bathe, feed and do every single thing for him.” Of course, other family members pitch in whenever they are available.

But Marlon refuses to complain about his lot in life, and happily embraces the chance he is getting to care for his father.

“I can’t complain; I got to live with it.

A lot of work is involved in caring for him, but it’s a commitment. I choose not to go anywhere because I have to be around him all the time. I can’t go out with my friends; hang out nowhere. You have to be around him in case he wants anything because he doesn’t speak. He wears pampers and when he wants to sleep, you would notice and put him to lie down. When he’s thirsty, you’d notice it too; everything you would notice.

Because of having to be at home all day, Marlon has decided to open a shop and begin rearing chickens, so that he can earn a living.

“This could happen to anyone. I’m getting big and it can happen to me too at a future time, and anyone would like for someone to give them a helping hand.”

PEACE WALK Meanwhile, the Bartica Town Council is scheduled to host a ‘walk for peace’ in memory of the victims of the Bartica massacre today, beginning at 16:00hrs. The walk, through the streets of Bartica, is expected to see participation from government agencies and departments, the Regional Democratic Council, non-governmental organisations, religious organisations, and residents.

“We named it the `peace walk’ because on that night of February 17, 2008, Bartica was basically terrorised, so we’ll continue to push a peaceful agenda, Mayor of Bartica Gifford Marshall told this publication.

The hour-long walk will culminate in a meeting at the Monument of Hope, where Marshall said a simple, but meaningful ceremony will be held. It will see remarks from the commander of ‘F’ Division, the regional chairman, the mayor, and other representatives within the township.

Twelve men lost their lives on that horrifying day. Those who were killed when the marauding gunmen stormed the police station were Lance Corporal Zaheer Zakhir of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo; Constables Shane Fredricks, 35, of 241 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara; and Ron Osborne of 198 Robb Street, Georgetown.

After killing the three policemen and wounding others, the gunmen broke into a ‘steel strong box’ which housed weapons and ammunition and carted away five rifles,

four revolvers and a shotgun, along with

a quantity of ammunition. From another ‘strong box’ which they also broke into, they stole $64,450.

Armed with the keys for one of the police jeeps, the now mobile and marauding gunmen moved along First Avenue where they killed security guards: Edwin Gilkes, who was on duty at the Banks DIH outlet; Irving Ferreira, who was guarding the CB&R Mining Enterprise; and taxi driver, Dexter Adrian, 37, of 581 Conciliation Street, Tucville and One Mile Potaro, who was on his way to buy gasoline.

And, as they hastily made their escape using the T&HD Stelling, they attacked and killed the crew that was aboard ‘Dave 11’, a vessel belonging to the conglomerate Banks DIH Limited, and on another vessel ‘Little Giant’. Both vessels were moored alongside the T&HD wharf.

The men, Ashraf Ally Khan, of Essequibo Coast; Errol Thomas, 41, of 810 Tuschen Housing Scheme; Deonarine Singh of Wakenaam, Essequibo River; Ronald Gomes of Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway; Baldeo Singh, of 153 Second Street, Montrose, East Coast Demerara; and Abdool Yasseen, 23, of 153 Good Hope, ECD, were at the time resting in their hammocks. They were hauled outside and ordered to lie on the wharf and each shot execution-style in the head.

ELC’s upcoming Spring Fashion and Empowerment Tea Party An opportunity for personal growth

By Gibron Rahim THERE are many reasons to celebrate the arts. They bring meaning and beauty into our lives. Sometimes life truly imitates art.

Even more profound is when the arts are directed toward a purpose or cause. This will be the case with the upcoming Spring Fashion and Empowerment Tea Party being hosted by Empowering to Lead with Confidence (ELC).

The Pepperpot Magazine was able to speak to ELC Founder Nadia Thomas Winter to learn about her background in the arts and gain some insight into what attendees can expect from the

Spring Fashion and Empowerment Tea Party.

Nadia has been designing freelance since the early 2000s during her years at the University of Guyana. She related that her interest in the fine arts came from her uncle who is a selftaught artist. “His artwork was very inspiring to me as a child and it’s something I grew to love,” she said. Additionally, Nadia has come from a line of self-taught seamstresses. Her grandmother, mother and aunts all became seamstresses. “Being around them, it was just natural for me to design,” stated Nadia. “Out of my three sisters, I was the only who took up designing.”

In addition to the mantle of designer,

Nadia has also taught Visual Arts for over 13 years. She is also notably a CSEC marker and moderator. She noted that teaching and grooming high school children have both been very exciting and sometimes challenging experience. “Experimenting with new techniques with them allows me to learn as well, as an educator or even as an artist,” Nadia related.

“Every day there are always new, inspiring things to learn.” She pointed out that the pro-

Currently based in the British Virgin Islands, Nadia is an advocate for the arts and all creativities. “Art is very important to a child’s development socially, emotionally and it helps develop their motor skills,” she noted.

She also pointed out that art is connected to mathematics, English, science and history and helps children to build self-esteem. “Through art, it gives a person the opportunity to make a personal statement and build confidence about their uniqueness allowing them to express happiness, joy, and pride,” Nadia affirmed. “As time changes, we focus more on creativity in eitherscience, inventions or creative industries to drive sustainable development and create inclusive job opportunities.”

Nadia cited a UNESCO report which noted that the contribution of cultural and creative industries to economic growth is estimated to generate US $250 billion in revenue a year, creating 29.5 million jobs worldwide.

“This report helps to demonstrate the value of the arts and it provides a good rationale for government support of arts and culture,” she said, “especially in developing countries where there are so many other demands on the public purse.”

The Spring Fashion and Empowerment Tea Party, as previously noted, is being hosted

by ELC, a group of persons who volunteer their time and passion for the arts. Nadia related that the event entails a registration process which will help ELC to collect necessary information of persons who are open to receiving materials for personal growth. It will feature live talks from local and international speakers. These will include local speaker Akola Thompson, Krystal Tomlinson (Jamaica), Ain Earle (Trinidad and Tobago), Serbina Sumrah Kelly (USA) and Dacia Daniels Lowe (BVI).

The event was inspired by Nadia’s own difficulties as an artist and designer in obtaining information and guidance to grow.

“Persons in the business were not willing to share their knowledge and it was always a secret,” she said. “However, at our events we would like to change that, providing the support, encouragement and inspiration for persons to move forward.” She explained that ELC’s aim is to enable the creative growth of persons through education, empowerment and development of brands which will better equip them to compete internationally, sustain themselves and contribute to Guyana’s economy.

It was important for Nadia to bring the event home to Guyana. “I wanted to provide the support to persons at home who are hungry to pursue their passion but are frustrated about not knowing how to move forward,” she explained. ELC, through its events, aims to provide necessary information and support to move forward and showcase our local talent, as well as to bring in persons who will be an inspiration for growth. “One of the things that are important to me is the power of volunteering and collaborations,” pointed out Nadia.

“Every event a person volunteers their time at or celebrates with someone is a learning process.” She advised, “Look at it as professional development as well as giving back to your community.”

The Spring Fashion and Empowerment Tea Party is a great opportunity, according to Nadia. “It is very exciting to come home to be a part of such an organisation, creating events that will help in developing person’s creativity,” she said, “and being able to assist with the necessary connections and materials that will help with personal growth.”

By Marissa V. Foster On Monday, February 11, young activist, Joylyn Conway, hosted the closing ceremony of her beauty with a purpose project STEM Girls Glow Campaign at the Berbice High School. February 11 is also designated International Day of women and girls in Science on the United Nations Calendar. Conway currently holds the Second Princess crown of the 2018 Miss World Guyana Pageant. She also won the ‘Five Year Plan’ and Talent Segments of the competition. Over the past year, she has travelled to schools across Berbice educating young girls on the importance of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) which is an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Conway noted that less than 35 per cent of the graduates of STEM are women, hence,

why this project is very important.

In her address to the crowd, Conway stressed, “Girls of Berbice are full of talent and aspirations.” She went on to explain how she was convinced by a teacher to join the Science Stream of Berbice High School.

She was then unsure but still took the risk of the unknown. Subsequently, Conway managed to graduate among the school’s top 10 students and later went on to become the second best graduating student in the major of Biology at the University of Guyana.

The beauty pageant contestant, in collaboration with Gordon’s Stationary Store, presented books to five deserving Grade 10 girls; Kerensa DeWeever, from the Berbice Educational Institute; Keanna Nichalson of Canje Secondary School; Mia Woolford of JC Chandisingh Secondary; Nyasha Barlow of Berbice High School and Amanda Macintosh of New Amsterdam Multilateral.

It is in that Chronicle feature article of February 23, 1986, that Mayor Robroy Whyte had said that, “Last year [1985] meetings were held at which procedures and techniques that should be implemented when taking animals along city streets to their grazing grounds were worked out.”

In that report, the mayor also spoke of the growing number of pavement dwellers in the city of Georgetown. As an aside, I would like to inform those who may not know, that Mayor Robroy Whyte was a very talented tap dancer and performed in a number of shows at the City Hall Concert Hall, as well as at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown.

He was also the only Mayor of Georgetown who died while in office.

However, back to the issue at hand: the perennial stray animals in the city of Georgetown and beyond; a problem which has caused quite a number of Guyanese to have been injured and killed in stray animal-related traffic crashes. To the best of my knowledge, no compensation has ever been paid to victims of stray animals by the owners.

In order to have an update of the Stray

Catchers Programme by that division of the Ministry of Public Security, I had a very long discussion with the officer-in-charge, who will not be identified by name in this article, for obvious reasons. “Most of the ‘Stray Catcher’ trucks are not in the best of condition,” he told me. “But we are doing our very best under the prevailing circumstances.”

The work of a stray catcher is not an easy one and the safety of those workers of the Ministry of Public Security is not always secure.

There is also the culture of cattle owners who feel entitled to allow their animals to go and graze wherever they so choose, irrespective of the inconvenience to others. Meanwhile, the stray catchers operation continues.

The related issue of dray carts operating in the city of Georgetown has also been discussed and in my survey, I have discovered that there are those both at home and in the diaspora, who have strong opinions as regards the future of dray carts in Georgetown. Has the time come for animal-drawn vehicles to be with-drawn from operating in the city? That will be the hot topic of an upcoming feature article of mine, here in the Pepperpot Magazine.

This, she said, comes in the form of the need for nutritional foods, to help where women would have received radiotherapy or CT scan, also where women may have had the mastectomy (the taking off of the breast as part of their treatment).

The GHF also offers breast prosthesis free of cost, and women who are undergoing or have completed chemotherapy and suffered hair loss can receive wigs at no charge to the individual. At the same time, the GHF also offers free counselling services to both the patient and their family.

Bringing harmony to the people

ERC launches song as part of massive campaign

By Michel Outridge WHEN the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) launched its harmony campaign, it also launched a song in addition to its advertisements, to foster unity among the people.

At the launch at Pegasus, earlier in January, the song was performed live by singers, Mark Fernindad and T’Shanna Cort, and was well-received by a large gathering of invitees including, ministers and officials from both sides of the political bench.

THE HARMONY SONG Composer/author of the song “Let harmony come in”, Burchmore Simon, told the Pepperpot Magazine that he was approached

by ERC Commissioner Neaz Subhan, who gave him some words of the song.

He then developed the words into lyrics and from that, within a short space of time, it was composed into a song, along with Subhan.

Simon added that song writing is a natural part of his being and it makes it easier to compose music,which is usually done at his Duncan Street, Georgetown studio.

He related that after the melody was completed and arranged, he compiled a demo and sent the copy to ERC with his own voice and they liked it, as such, the song was conceptualised.

Simon has been composing and writing music since he was eight years old, he prefers to write true stories into songs but is really passionate about calypso, and has written many songs for our local artistes.

Simon is no stranger to the stage and singing but now he is comfortable doing what he loves, that is, writing and composing music.

He added that although he hasn’t heard the ERC song being played enough on the local airwaves, he was told it was a hit at the launch but noted that the ERC ads have certainly impacted a lot of people.

EXCITED As for the local singer, T’Shanna Cort, a University of Guyana Third-Year Public Management student, she told the Pepperpot Magazine that when she was asked by Simon, who is her manager, to sing the song she was elated.

Although nervous, Cort also performed the song live at the launch as well. “I am a

Guyanese and every time we have elections we experience this change in some people and I want that to change. Let us live normally like we do every day, in unity and with the song, I am of the hope it will bring such a change,” she said.

This spritely young lady has been singing behind closed doors since she was much younger and only came out of her shell in her teenage years.

Cort said she was very shy but is passionate about singing, and it was when she started to sing in public and realised her true potential that she eventually got over her nerves of performing in front of people.

Cort is a two-time Junior Calypso winner in 2016 and 2017 and also placed third in 2017 r in the Calypso Monarch Competition.

Meanwhile, the other singer Mark Ferdinand, had never met Cort before they collaborated and sang the harmony song, but admitted that they were in sync from the start.

Coincidentally, on the night they sang the song at the Pegasus, they both wore the same colours without even consulting each other, which was a remarkable coincidence.

It took him three days to learn the words of the song and he was really pleased with the outcome.

He knew of the song when he received a call from Simon, and he accepted the offer to sing.

Ferdinand told the Pepperpot Magazine that he started singing in church at a tender age and that he also ang professionally in a band on a cruise ship. Today he sings for events, including funerals, weddings, wakes, anniversaries and other special events.

“I was short in school and the teachers used to put me on a chair to sing, I was the little guy with a big voice and I morphed from that person to a better singer today,” he said.

In addition to the song, the ERC’s campaign includes five harmony-themed public service announcements, four posters, a harmony “passport”, designs for two billboards and the Commission’s new website.

ERC believes the campaign, which is in keeping with its constitutional mandate to promote harmony and good relations, is vital in helping to enhance the environment to foster unity among all Guyanese. It remains optimistic that Guyanese will find useful, the materialswhich will be made available to the public and will be conduits to aid distribution countrywide.

Bartica pageant showcases aspects of healthy living A Valentine’s Day pageant was organised at the Bartica Secondary School a few days ago that sought to incorporate aspects of healthy living and care for the environment.

“This touched me because we have been pushing at the municipality for people to change the way the think and treat the environment,” Mayor of Bartica Gifford Marshall told this publication.

He is hoping that more events like these would be organised so that a transformation can come about.

“To see that they were able to incorporate

that aspect of healthy living, that aspect of a better environment, a better individual; it was just mind-blowing for me and the councillors.

If we have more events like these, it can definitely continue the transformation that we want to see in Bartica,” Marshall expressed.

Bartica is known for some time now as the gateway to the interior and while there is much wealth associated with this term, Marshall pointed out how a lot of destruction to the environment is also associated.

“We would have also seen over the decades that people have been abandoning their farms and pursuing the mining industry, but

when you fly over Bartica, there is major discolouration in our rivers, the creeks; there’s

deforestation in some places,” Marshall said.

Therefore, a new mindset is needed so that people can begin caring more for the environment.

“It’s a new mindset, a new paradigm shift, where we need people to understand not to only take good care of themselves, but to care for the environment, and the environment is God’s gift to us,” Marshall expressed.

However, it is also a known fact that men can have breast cancer as well, stating that Guyana does have a record of men that are affected by breast cancer. “Therefore, it is important for men to take this disease as a serious matter and continue to have their prostate examinations done,” she urged. She stated that HEROC fully supports their sister organisation in Guyana, the GHF, in the area of reaching out to families of cancer victims, adding that the GHF also conducts one-week camps for children who have lost their parents to cancer.

THE WHO REPORT According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) September 2018 report :“Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally,

and is responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. Globally, about one in every six deaths is due to cancer.

“Approximately 70 percent of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries…Around one-third of deaths from cancer are due to the five leading behavioural and dietary risks: high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use and alcohol use.”

Further, Welshman-Neblett has stated that the WHO 2014 Report, ranked cancer as the top 25 causes of deaths in Guyana, where there is limited access to the required health care for this dreaded disease. She indicated that in 2015, 125 breast cancer cases were diagnosed and 46 cancer-related deaths recorded at the Oncology Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

These figures, it noted, are only based on the reported cases, since Guyanese are not vocal about having this disease.

HEROC’S OPERATIONS The HEROC team which consists of 20 persons to date, is comprised of health care professionals and non-medical members.

The team is focused on providing assistance through education and awareness to promote early detection and screening, distribution of prosthetic bras and wigs, financial support and counselling and nutrition services for cancer patients and survivors, even as the organisation continues to work in collaboration with the GHF as part of its mission trips to Guyana.

HEROC’s president disclosed that the financial and other resources are obtained mainly from fundraising activities (such as an annual spring tea party in April, a bingo evening in July and a Guyanese-style holiday breakfast in December), private corporations, Federal and State Governmental Agencies, individual patrons, through written solicitations and other non-for-profit organisations within the United States of America.

IX ly involved in activities during October for Breast Cancer Awareness month, where they contribute to The American Cancer Society.

HEROC is a registered New York State Incorporation dedicated to the commitment of health care, education and nutrition for cancer patients and others of the community. “Our goal is to improve and enhance the well-being and health of individuals within these communities… and will assist in providing the adequate and required help in the fight against cancer,” Welshman-Neblett informed.

HEROC’s advisory board includes Community Activist, Patricia Jordon-Langford; Dr. Harrison Mitchell; Natasha Pinhiero; Christine Blackmore and Elsa Kum. Providing Security

By Indrawattie Natram RESIDENTS living in the fast-developing community of Red Village at Onderneeming Village in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), want to feel safe while they are in the comforts of their homes. They are, therefore, requesting of the Minister of Public, Security Khemraj Ramjattan to establish a police outpost in their community. This request was made during a Face the Community Meeting held recently by the Commander of the ‘G’ Division Khalid Pareshram.

During the meeting, residents were very vocal and expressed their fear of living in the community. They have said that youths in the area are involved in illicit activities, and there were also reports from villagers that there is an increase in the use of narcotics by the youths. Residents voiced their concerns, too, on criminal activities that are committed by youths in the area.

Onderneeming/Red Village residents request Police Outpost In view of these alarming social ills within the community, residents are calling for a police outpost to be stationed in the area. In the meantime, they are requesting an increase in police patrols, especially in the nights.

During interactions with residents, Commander Pareshram assured residents that he will make the necessary recommendations for the outpost. Pareshram spoke on the need for better community-police relationships and the need for residents to see the police as partners. He also spoke on the division’s intention for 2019 in tackling crime and reducing congestion in traffic.

“There will be a continuation of the social crime prevention plan, the presence of team policing and neighbourhood police in your community. We need adults and partners to assist the police in making a difference” Pareshram said.

The commander, therefore, pledged the division’s com-

mitment to working with youths and urged the elders in the community to do likewise.

Other complaints raised during the meeting included, the lack of a good working relationship with members of the Community Policing Group (CPG) and police ranks being too friendly with residents and not dealing with complaints in a timely manner. The telephone numbers of key personnel were then shared with residents.

The Police Youth Group also adopted the community centre ground under its open space projects. The commander was accompanied by the Divisional Detective Inspector, Divisional Traffic Inspectors and ranks from the Suddie Police Station.

‘My profession chose me’

Designing is young Dwight Beaton’s passion DWIGHT Beaton was able to find his true passion and realise his real potential thanks to the loving interest that a teacher took in him. She noticed his artistic skills in class and encouraged him to reach out and do more to enhance them.

Dwight, 25, the youngest councillor on the Bartica Town Council, was born and raised at Caribese Hill, Bartica, and was studying in the Arts stream.

“So, I was always sketching something and my Form Mistress, Lavern Spencer, saw what I was drawing one day and told me I was really good,” Dwight recalled during an interview with the Pepperpot Magazine.

“I don’t know if the stars aligned or something, but that same year, the Bartica Regatta did a designer’s quest and it was opened to students and young adults. In the same week, Ms. Spencer brought the form to me and encouraged me to sign up for it,” Dwight added.

That teacher provided the moulding Dwight needed and gave him advice and reassurance that he was going to do well.

That wasn’t the first time that Dwight’s interest was sparked in this field though, because even as young as 10 years old, he can recall helping to design a gown. “I started designing when I was 10, but I didn’t think much of it. I thought to myself that I was good at drawing; gifted in the

arts, and I just started designing and fashion. It became a reality, and I thought this is the best thing for me and what I should do. I wouldn’t say I chose my profession; it chose me,” he expressed.

Dwight designs dresses, accessories and costumes, and does the ‘Mash’ band for the Town Council. He has been working with the council in this regard for the past two years.

He sews some of the costumes himself but employs the services of a seamstress to help with the technical work.

“Designing just comes to me; I am inspired by anything.

I can be on the beach just hanging out and I could be inspired by the waves. I could be at home and just see some insect or anything, and the inspiration just comes to me and this could be transformed into clothing,” Dwight said.

He’s gotten so good at what he does that he is now able to work with people abroad and regionally. He also works with pageants that are held all across Guyana.

POLITICS Dwight decided to enter politics last year because he said he wanted to fill a void that he observed young people were experiencing. “Being someone in the spotlight all the time in Bartica, I saw that I had a great platform for people to listen to me and gravitate towards me,” he said.

Recently, at the Bartica Congress, Dwight was elected Chairman of Social Development. “So that comes with a lot of responsibilities, and I want to use that position to create a lot of family-friendly events.”

Dwight believes that it is his drive, talent, and passion for what he does that set him apart from any other 25 year-old.

“There isn’t any other Dwight out there,” he proudly said.

He advises that young people should aim to be themselves.

“Be yourself, and people will gravitate towards you for you.

The minute that you want to be somebody else; that’s where the problem comes. Be happy with who you are, find yourself and be responsible and professional.”

Dwight also believes that life is an ongoing journey and that there’s always room for improvement in what someone does.

He is particularly appreciative of some of the effort that government has been making to better the lives of Guyanese. “I applaud the government in terms of the crime rate going drastically down, and I really applaud them on the cleaning-up of Guyana. The country was in a deplorable state regarding garbage disposal. They also show accountability because they don’t cover up anything; they put everything on the spotlight.”

By Shirley Thomas A 44-year-old gold miner working on a land-dredging operation at Kaituma River Bank, North West Region, prior to February 11, had always longed to travel to Georgetown on vacation.

He never got down to planning specifically what time he would visit, the duration of his stay, or how he would spend his time there.

As fate would have it, however, he was air-dashed to Georgetown on Monday, February 11, for the very first time under tragic circumstances.

A few days earlier, Carie Moses narrowly escaped death when he was pinned by a huge block of mud, when a portion of the wall of the mining pit caved in, severely injuring him.

The miner, who is now warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital, is being treated for a dislocated hip, trauma to the head and back, raw abrasions to his left leg, among other injuries. It is not yet determined whether any nerves have been damaged, but his condition is now listed as stable.

Recounting the horrific experience, Moses told the Pepperpot Magazine that it was just after 13:30hrs on Monday, he was in the pit operating a jetting hose which separates the gold from gravel, when suddenly a huge portion of mud broke away from the side of the wall and literally covered him.

“It hit me from behind and pushed me flat on my tummy. The mud covered my entire body and I was thrown face down, with only my eyes peeping out. My neck, back, hands and feet were all covered, and I said, “Well this is death here!”

“I’m not any big Christian, but I called upon God and asked him to save my life and get me out from where I was trapped, and he did it for me, and now I am so grateful to him,” the miner gratefully acknowledged. He stated that he got his exposure to Christianity in the Roman Catholic Church at his home community, in the North West Region.

The men rushed to his assistance and

hurriedly pulled him from under the rubble.

“I blacked out under pain. They fetched me a distance of about 12 to 15 miles to the Black Water Landing which has a dispensary, for me to get medical treatment,” he recalled.

They were forced to walk through slippery muddy terrain because it was raining and the mining camp is deep down in the backdam and trucks don’t go there, he related.

Moses said he remained unconscious for the greater part of the journey. Having set out from the campsite around 13:30hrs, they arrived at the Black Water Landing on foot around 21:00 hrs.

Meanwhile, the boss, while en route to Black Water Landing had called the dispensary at that location alerting them, so that on arrival a boat was already awaiting them.

That boat would take them to Kumaka in the Mabaruma Sub-Region, some 60 miles away by boat, where an ambulance was already equipped and waiting to take him to the Mabaruma Public Hospital for admission and treatment, before he was medically evacuated to Georgetown.

Fortunately, the tide was in their favour and they immediately set out for Kumaka en route to Mabaruma, by which time it was 21:30 hrs. Hours later, they arrived at Kumaka Landing where an ambulance was waiting to the patient transported to the Mabaruma Public Hospital, where he was given initial treatment and later air-dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

It’s been approximately one week since his admission at the GPHC, and Moses has admitted that he is feeling better and is satisfied with the treatment and cooperation being extended to him by the medical and ancillary staff at all levels. Not least, he is grateful to the doctors and nurses who continue to provide efficient and effective medical care, so that today, his condition can be considered as stable.

Further, Moses would like to express gratitude to his boss, Nasiv; his working colleagues who braved the deeply, forested terrain to get him out of the backdam by trekking more than 12 miles on foot bring him to

trip to Georgetown and that he has always longed to visit the Capital City, but never managed to. “But now sickness bring me, and is not a nice experience,” he admits.

Farmer eyes investment opportunity with vermicomposting

HAVE you ever thought of raising worms?

Not as pets, but as a way to create more compost and enrich your garden soil.

This is called, Vermicomposting and it is a great way to put your waste to work and earn some extra cash.

Vermicomposting is the practice of using the California Red Earthworms (Eisenia fetida) to help break down food waste. The end product is called Vermicast and it contains water-soluble nutrients and is an excellent, nutrient-rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner.

Vermicomposting was introduced to farmers throughout the country by the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) through its extension workers. Worms were distributed to farmers and they were guided throughout the composting process.

One such farmer is 65-year-old Rudolph Trotman, who resides at Number 4 Village, West Coast Berbice. Through the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)’s Disaster Risk Reduction project (DRR), a vermicompost bin was constructed in the farmer’s backyard.

The bin is comprised of stones, sand, fresh cow manure, dry grass and mesh to prevent penetration of sunlight. Trotman said he used six inches of stone followed by six inches of sand and eight inches of fresh cow mould in his bin.

Red Earthworms in the bin and covered it with dried grass. “NAREI staff came and helped me set it up and then they would do follow up visits,” the farmer said while adding that he was able to harvest the organic fertiliser within eight weeks.

The worms usually multiply themselves in the bin.

Trotman started with 200 in September 2018 and he now has more than 20 pounds.

“I use to plant cash crop but then people start selling the mould (animal manure) so I just stop with the cash crop and started planting citrus but I start back with the cash crop last year when I got the first Vermicast and the plants are doing great. The vegetables are leafy and they look healthy,” Trotman said.

According to the farmer, after eight weeks, the cow mould becomes powdery and it has a pH of 7.1. “Vermicast is amazing. Everybody who I give it to had nothing but good things to say and all of them what to try it.”

Having seen the benefit of Vermicast, Trotman now plans to invest in another bin.

This will aid him in raising more worms and producing more vermicast to sell to the market. “I want to do my own label and package the Vermicast and sell it to the market because it’s good stuff and it’s organic too. I will sell the worms too because they multiply fast,” he said.

Vermicompost was introduced because farmers have been planting on the same plot of land over and over, and they have been using synthetic fertiliser.

In honour of Isahack Basir Region Two Chairman calls for Museum

By Indrawattie Natram In memory of Region Two historian and former Member of Parliament (MP), Isahak Basir, Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt is calling on the Government of Guyana to establish a museum in honour of the deceased.

Eighty- four-year-old Isahak Basir aka “Tabarak” formerly of Jacklow, Pomeroon, died on February 1 at the Suddie Public Hospital after suffering from heart failure.

Former historian, During a moving funeral Isahak Basir service held at Basir’s home on February 6, Ramdatt called for an area to be used as a museum to display all of Basir’s work. He said that the historian had a wealth of knowledge on the history of sugar estates and landmarks within the region, and as such, his works should be displayed as a way of remembering him.

Speaking on Basir’s dedication, Ramdatt said that he was a visionary who had the people’s welfare at heart. With that in mind, he said, the people of Region Two will forever miss his contributions especially during historical programmes, events and activities. Ramdatt said, he vividly remembered Basir volunteering his time to speak to school children and even residents within the county, on the arrival of Indians to

“Essequibo will surely miss a great soul but in remembering his work we must build something that will be here for the longest while, and that is a museum,” Ramdatt said.

After hearing the chairman’s request many of those who attended the funeral service were in agreement.

“Mr. Basir was a man who knew good history, he had a lot of documents he wrote, and also documentaries he did, we can use same and make our history richer,” a well-wisher who attended the funeral said.

At his funeral, he was described by Prime Minister Moses

Nagamotoo as a healing soul and a man who touched thousands of lives.

His funeral service was attended by hundreds of persons, including representatives from Government and non-government organisations (NGOs).

Basir was a former Member of Parliament (MP);

a former Chairman of the National Congress of Local Democratic Organ (NCLDO); Vice President of the Rice Producers Association (RPA); Chairman of Guyana-Libya Agriculture Company; a social worker; a historian and a dental technician by profession. His body was buried at the Lima Sands Cemetery- a place that was dear to him.

IN 1975, a married couple was on a sightseeing trip at the Le Repentir Cemetery when the wife was attacked and robbed, of her wrist watch and a gold finger-ring by a gold-tooth robber.

Later at a police identification parade that gold-tooth robber was identified to be Vibert Hodge. He was subsequently arrested and charged, tried, convicted and was sentenced to prison.

Dissatisfied with the decision, the prisoner represented by lawyer Malcolm Taharally, appealed to the Guyana Court of appeal.

The State was represented by Mr. Nandram Kissoon, a Senior State Counsel (who later became a Justice of Appeal).

The appellant complained to the Appellate Court that since he was the only man on parade with a gold tooth he considered himself wrongly identified at an identification parade which was unfairly conducted.

The Appellate Court constituted by Chancellor J.O.F. Haynes, with Justices of Appeal, VIctor Crane and Keith Massiah heard an appeal which lasted 3 days.

They allowed the appeal and set aside the conviction and sentence after finding that the identification parade at which the prisoner was identified was unfairly conducted.

The facts of the case disclosed that the appellant, armed with a knife, attacked and robbed one Violet Ramadan of a wrist watch and a finger-ring. While removing the ring, he opened his mouth as if to bite her finger to get it off. It was then that she saw that he was wearing gold tooth. Some five weeks later Ramadan identified the accused at an identification parade as the robber.

At the trial, there were three different versions as to how the appellant was identified at the parade. The first was given by Violet Ramadan who said she identified him initially by his appearance, but in order to make doubly sure, she asked him to open his mouth. The second was by Inspector Troyer who conducted the parade. Troyer said Ramadan asked him to cause the men on parade to open their mouths, and that when they did so she touched the accused on his shoulder.

The third version which was given by the accused was substantially the same as that given by Inspector Troyer, with this difference, that whereas Troyer said that there were others with gold teeth, the accused insisted that he was the only man on parade with a gold teeth, which meant he was urging that the parade was unfairly conduced in that he was identified solely by his gold tooth.

The Appellate Court found that in his summing up the trial judge did not bring to the jury’s attention the apparent conflict between Ramdan’s and Inspector Troyer’s evidence, nor the fact that Troyer’s evidence that the accused was identified after he had opened his mouth, tended to support the evidence of the accused.

The judge merely left it to the jury to find as a question of fact, if they were minded to believe Ramadan and Troyer, whether the identification parade had been properly conducted.

The accused also said in defence that the charge against him was a trumped-up one, that he had been “framed” by the police because he and the policeman who charged him, had an altercation over a girlfriend, and that the policeman threatened “to throw the book at him”. Nothing was said about this important aspect of the defence to the jury, the Appellate Court had found.

The Appellate Court held: (1) That the apparent conflict between Ramadan and Troyer’s evidence should have been pointed out to the jury who ought to have been advised to be cautious about accepting Ramdan’s testimony that she had primarily identified the accused apart from his gold teeth.

(2) The jury should have been told that if they accepted Troyer’s evidence then Ramadan’s identification at the parade was unsatisfactory, hence they should attach little weight to her identification in court.

(3) The jury should have been directed that if they believed that the accused was the only man on parade with gold teeth, the parade would have been unfairly conducted and they should attach little weight to it.

The dash to ‘Mash’ WE are in the countdown to the climax of the Mashramani celebrations. Despite the distractions of the forthcoming national elections, the oil discoveries and the Venezuelan sabre-rattling, Guyanese people are not allowing themselves to be distracted away from their celebrations of “Mash” and the commemoration of Republic Day. The business community, the Ministry of Culture, the Education System as represented by the schools throughout the nation, as well as the various entertainment promoters are all engaged in an active and vibrant medley, to create an occasion which will long live in the national memory.

Though the celebratory aspects of Mashramani have almost subsumed the commemoration of the Berbice Slave Rebellion which began on February 23, 1763, some 250 years ago, the State formally has its own celebration with the raising of the National Flag, a military parade, gun salutes and fireworks which are the major attraction.

“Berbicians” tend to pay more attention to the freedom struggle aspect of the festival than “Demerarians” and “Essequibans” because they have always stoutly claimed that, Berbice was the home and incubator of Guyanese freedom and freedom struggles. They also claim that the majority of the men and women who have struggled for democracy, human rights and workers’ rights have had Berbician roots. Berbice’s role in Guyana’s social, economic and cultural development could certainly provide topics for MA and PhD theses, especially now that Berbice has become Guyana’s oil capital.

Most of the media have concentrated on the entertainment and celebratory aspects of the festival, barely remembering the Berbice Slave Rebellion. We, therefore, think it appropriate to remind ourselves of that important historical event.

The Rebellion broke out at plantation Magdalenenburg in the Berbice River on February 23, 1763, 250 fifty years ago, and quickly spread to almost all the plantations along both Canje and Berbice Rivers. It should be remembered that until the 19th century no plantations had been established on the coast, mainly because of the drainage problems. The slaves, led by Cuffy, quickly seized all the plantations leaving the Dutch pent up at Fort Nassau. In the colony, at the time there were approximately 4000 slaves and 400 Europeans. Cuffy and his army were now in possession of the colony and wished to declare it an independent state.

Cuffy began negotiations with the Dutch Governor Van Hoogenhiem so as to have the Dutch make a peaceful exit out of the colony, but Van Hoogenhiem played for time prolonging the negotiations. In the meantime, the governor desperately sought reinforcements from Demerara, Surinam and Holland. Such reinforcements arrived in the nick of time and Cuffy and his army found themselves outgunned and militarily outnumbered and after a few skirmishes, they were defeated.

Most historians have concluded that if the slaves had not been plagued with internal dissension, they would have been successful and would have been able to establish the first African independent state in the Americas, pre-dating Haiti by half a century. The colony of Berbice never recovered from the Rebellion and only returned to some stability and prosperity when it was ceded to Britain in 1815.

Since February 23, was the anniversary of the first attempt to establish an independent state in Guyana, President LFS Burnham felt it was most appropriate to declare Guyana a Republic on that anniversary. The first years of the Republic Day celebrations were distinctly political - there were speeches by the President, military parades, gun salutes, flag raising and fireworks in all the regions. Linden had long been marking Independence Day in May with celebrations largely modelled on the Trinidad Carnival. The Linden celebrations became absorbed in Republic Day and soon came to be its main element. It was in Linden that the name Mashramani was given to the festival which had evolved to be almost purely celebratory. Mashramani is an Amerindian word meaning ‘relaxation and celebration after a period of hard work’.

Some of the main programmes of Mashramani include the Children’s School Competitions running up to the Children’s National Competition; Mashramani All Stars Concert in Region One and at Lethem; the Chutney Extravaganza Song Competition and Duck Curry Competition held at Bath and Charity; Calypso and Soca competitions running into Mash-

ramani week; the National Art Exhibition; the Literary and Visual Arts Street Fair on Main Street on February 21. The centrepiece of the Mashramani celebrations is the Flag Raising Ceremony in the evening of February 22 at D’Urban Park, followed by the Costume and Float Parade on

February 23.

Mashramani celebrations in the coming years could be enrichened if greater emphasis were laid on literary competitions and performances of the classical music of Guyana’s two great musical traditions, the Western and the Indian. Also, the plural cultures of Guyana could be shown to great advantage especially their performing arts and cuisine. Happy Mashramani!

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

I MEAN, sure – given that February is Oscar month and all, I could have chosen to write about Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma.” I could have highlighted the significance of Yalitza Aparicio’s Oscar nomination, or my reasons for believing why her co-star, Marina de Tavira, will beat out the frontrunners to win Best Supporting Actress.

However, instead of celebrating “Roma” (though I do love the film), I will be drawing your attention to another movie that is quite brilliant in its own right and, yet, has managed to fly under the radar by not gaining as much momentum as Cuaron’s film during awards season. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” like “Roma” is distributed by Netflix and even though the former has only been nominated for three Academy Awards this year (as compared to the latter, which has earned 10 nominations), there is still a lot to love in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” which was written and directed by the Academy Award-winning duo of Joel and Ethan Cohen.

The film is an anthology film – meaning that it is comprised of several stories that are not directly related to each other, but, rather, share similar themes, as well as the setting of the American frontier. The six shorts that make up the complete film, star a wide array of established and unknown actors, and also fluctuate in tone and mood ranging from the comic to the sorrowful. It is a wild ride, overall, but an enjoyable one that presents new stories in the format of the Western, which is a movie genre that highlights a certain bygone era and, therefore, to observe the Cohens’ repackaging of this form for the current generation of moviegoers is illuminating, fascinating, and entertaining.

The first story is the one that gives the film its name. It is the tale of the Buster Scruggs (played to perfection by Tim Blake Nelson), who is an extremely upbeat, singing cowboy whose positive personality is only contrasted by his remarkable skills at killing people. However, the juxtaposition of his charm with his gun-slinging fits right in with the known lore of the Wild West, as, rather than being some sort of creepy sadist, Buster Scruggs comes across as an immensely likeable, folksong-singing hero. His role is reminiscent of many other figures from myth and legend – such as Anansi and Robin Hood – whose attraction and likability has always managed to overshadow the devious, immoral, mischievous, or morally ambiguous aspects of such characters.

We believe education is vital for transformative action, to build awareness, and prompt conversations about the current realities of our planet and provide an impetus for solutions. Speech and ‘tied tongue’ THE ability to speak is a complex act. First, the brain issues a command to the lungs to initiate an airstream.

Before this airstream can become speech, however, it must pass through, or by, the larynx or voice box, pharynx or throat, tongue, teeth, lips and nose. All these can modify the airstream in various ways.

Sometimes mothers attended the clinic with a child seeking help in relation to speech problems the child may be experiencing. Recently, for example, a woman brought her three-year-old son. She complained that he could not speak as yet because he has “tied tongue”. On examining the child I discovered that indeed he had a short frenulum (the ligament

that restrains the tongue from underneath). I explained to the mother that a short frenulum, although inhibits proper articulation does not prevent anyone from speaking. The child, in fact, had a speech disorder.

The front of the tongue is especially plastic and can be controlled with great precision by the nervous system. To pronounce vowels, the tongue, by assuming different positions within the mouth, creates a great variety of resonance chambers, all different from each other, like the shapes of different musical instruments.

To pronounce consonants, the tongue collaborates with the other parts of the mouth to make partial or complete closures, either forcing the air through a narrow constriction ( as in the pronunciation of the “th” sound in breath) or stopping its progress altogether ( as with the “d” sound in breed).

The existence of pathology (disease), either functional or organic, is the basic distinction between true speech disorders and those faulty speech habits which arise from a complex of environmental, cultural, local-regional, educational and socio-economic factors. Another distinction, at the behavioural level, is whether the speech disorder is assessed as a handicap.

Speech disorders, both functional and organic, at the handicap level, affect about 50 000 Guyanese or six per cent of the population. Approximately 40 per cent is due to hearing loss, 10 per cent neurological disease and the remaining 50 per cent a range of other causes.

The highest incidence of speech disorders occurs developmentally among children and youth. Functional disorders in articulation are the leading cause, stuttering is the second and hearing impairment with speech defect is the third. Now, voice disorders, or dysphonias, consist of two main types. There are those arising from speech habits, and psychogenic types arising from emotional disturbance. Both types represent either overactive muscular activity, creating harsh, grating speech, or underactive activity, creating subdued or sluggish speech.

Speech impediments include the following three types, Cluttering (tachypnoea) is an erratic, jerky speech. Lisping, or immature speech (dyslalia), may relate to the abnormality of the external speech organs, for example, in tongue, teeth relationships. Stuttering or stammering (dysphemia), once considered a psychogenic disorder, is now known to be caused by neurological deficiencies present at birth or resulting from an injury.

Finally, other functional disorders include those caused by sensory inadequacies in the family setting, such as the presence of deaf parents. Also seen are delayed maturation of motor or brain function, emotional trauma due to parental neglect or abuse as well as institutional deprivations of adverse socio-economic factors, which result in learning disabilities related to the development of speech.

So, because the final instrument which produces speech is the mouth, the dentist should always be consulted as part of the treatment team.

Books and mental health over entertainment.

However, in regards to reducing symptoms of mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression, self-help books have been shown to be the most effective.

Self-help books are those that are written with the sole intention to educate and instruct readers on how to solve their personal and individual problems. There are self-help books related to any specific problem or you can get one that general-

I RECEIVED lots of emails last week regarding my column on the benefits of healthily watching movies. One in particular that stood out was a mother who asked me to write about books, as she has a hard time not only getting her children to (stop watching TV ) and read, but finding the motivation to do so herself. I don’t think it’s fair or even a good idea for me to argue which may be better- but I’m definitely willing to discuss the benefits of books in general and throw in some comparisons.

There’s a reason why people respect those who are “well - read” as its recognisable that reading improves vocabulary and writing skills, enhances language skills, builds imagination and provides knowledge on an abundance of topics that would be difficult to get elsewhere. Just as we require physical exercise for our body’s health, we require mental exercise for our brain/mind and yes, the easiest way to do that may just be reading.

There have been scientific studies that show the physical and mental health benefits of reading. Reading only 30 minutes a day has been shown to prevent, manage, as well as treat some mental health and neurological disorders.

Reading has been shown to lower symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, as well as reduce the risk of serious illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

One researcher in particular who studied memory decline in over 300 elderly participants determined that those who did not read experienced a 48 per cent faster memory decline rate than those who did read.

Reading continuously improves not only our vocabulary and general knowledge but also our critical and analytical thinking, and concentration skills. This means it greatly improves our confidence and self-esteem, while aiding in building relationships, as well as obtaining and maintaining employment.

Some researchers have also found that reading reduces stress levels by up to 68 per cent.

All of the above actually suggests that reading increases our overall life span.

The type of book doesn’t matter in regards to the general benefits of reading. My research shows that people in high positions (globally) mainly recommend non- fiction books such as autobiographies of other successful people or books that generally promote education and emotional intelligence

(4) The defence was not properly left to the jury. The accused was alleging oppression and victimisation on the part of the police, and the judge should have told the jury to acquit if they believe this was so.

(5) The trial judge was in error when he allowed the accused, after conviction, to plead to six other charges forming the subject of five outstanding indictable offences with a view to having them taken into consideration and to proceed to sentence him in respect of those charges.

(6) The correct procedure is for the judge merely to ask the accused whether he admits his guilt on the outstanding offences. The accused must be sentenced only once, i.e., in respect of the offence for which he was tried and found guilty.

The idea of taking other offences into consideration is merely to measure the appropriate sentence.

The Appellate Court allowed the appeal and set aside the conviction and sentences.

Delivering the judgment of the Court, Justice of Appeal Mr. Keith Massiah had said “The appellant was indicted with and convicted of robbery under arms, contrary to section 222

© of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. The allegation of the State was that while armed with a knife he had robbed one Violet Ramadan of a wrist watch and a ring. There was evidence that, while she was in the Le Repentir Cemetery with her husband on March 30, 1975 , at about 4.15 p.m. the appellant went up to her placed a knife to her chest , pulled her wristwatch from her left hand and opened his mouth as if to bite her finger to get off the ring . Ramadan told him not to bite her and in fear handed the ring to him.

“Five weeks later, on May 4, 1975, at an identification parade conducted at Ruimveldt Police Station, Ramadan identified the appellant as the person who had taken her watch and ring. Counsel for the appellant contended in this court, as the appellant had complained in the court below, that the identification parade was unfairly conducted.

“At the trial three different versions were given as to how the appellant came; to be identified. Ramadan said that she identified the appellant and them asked him to open his mouth “to be doubly sure” and that “the gold teeth in (his) mouth made (her) doubly sure”. Inspector Hubert Troyer, who conducted the identification parade, said something different. He

The appellant, in his statement from the dock, said that the men on parade were first asked to show their teeth and that he was the only man who had gold teeth. He was clearly saying that he was identified by his gold teeth.

“The sum total of Ramadan’s evidence on this issue is that she identified the appellant partly by his gold teeth, whereas Troyer’s evidence suggests that she identified him wholly by them. What must be noted, is that Troyer’s version was the same as the appellant’s, save that whereas the appellant claimed that he was the only person on the parade with gold teeth. Troyer said that there were others.

After citing a number of similar fact cases in which the Court of criminal appeal had allowed appeals and quashed the convictions, justice of Appeal Massiah, who later became Chancellor of the Judiciary, allowed the appeal quashed and set aside the conviction and sentence.

Chancellor Haynes and Justice of Appeal Crane concurred.

The second story, called “Near Algodones,” stars James Franco, as a man who tries to rob a bank. Franco’s character, like Buster Scruggs before him, is another of the smirking, winking, swashbuckling figures that seem to have walked right out of the frontier’s lore. The difference between Franco’s Cowboy and Nelson’s Buster Scruggs is that Scruggs is a killing-machine, whereas the Cowboy laughably comes across as a man trying to do something out of his league by trying to rob the bank. The comedy only gets better in this one, as the Cowboy is chased away and then overpowered by the elderly bank teller who wears a wild, cacophonous array of pots and pans as a shield against the Cowboy’s bullets – and the scene in the film is as absurd as it sounds written here, but its absurdity only enhances both entertainment factor and the weirdness of life on the prairie.

“Meal Ticket” is darker in tone than the previous two shorts as it tells the story of two travelling men who rely on each other for their livelihood in very different ways.

Liam Neeson appears as a travelling impresario whose main source of income comes from what is earned at the shows he arranges on his travels, where his companion, an armless and legless orator (played tenderly by Harry Melling) recites famous speeches and poems. The orator, because of his limited ability to move, relies on the impresario to carry him from place to place and to even feed him his food.

Their relationship is mutualistic, each benefitting the other in some way that is more than having to do with business and finances. The entirety of their relationship is unclear, the backstory is foggy, and their feelings for each other is even foggier, fluctuating between affection, resentment, and resigned dependence. Yet, despite the ambiguity of all this, this particular story still manages to retain a kernel of strong, hard emotion at its centre. We feel for these two characters and their circumstances, eking out a living in the harsh, cold world of the frontier.

“All Gold Canyon” is one of my favourite stories from the six. Tom Waits (better known for his singing) is an old, grizzled, grandfatherly prospector searching for gold in a beautiful valley filled with lush scenery, a merry stream, and random animals. The setting for this story is truly spectacular. The story is really a one-man show, and the audience watches the prospector toil day after day, digging mound of dirt after mound of dirt, working tirelessly to find the gold.

This may seem like a tedious exercise for the audience to engage with, but Waits fills his character with such bounteous joy and perseverance that we feel we are there working alongside him and we want to find the gold as much as he wants to. When he finally does, his joy is infectious. When misfortune befalls him and he seems to lose everything he has worked so hard for, we too are hurt and angry. In the end, this particular tale thankfully turns out to be one of the happiest of the lot and serves as a strong reminder of the remarkable acting skills of the brilliant Tom Waits.

Zoe Kazan in “The Gal Who Got Rattled” is a young woman named Alice, who ends up travelling by herself, after her brother dies while a part of a wagon train, on her way to the site where she will meet the man that her brother has promised her to. After her brother’s death, Alice becomes close with the handsome but slightly brooding leader of the wagon train, Billy, and most of the story is spent building the relationship between Alice and Billy. Theirs is a slow and delicate awakening towards each other, and this is what makes it all the more special. Alice realises that in Billy she can marry on her own terms, to a man who can provide for her, while Billy begins to understand that he is not meant for life forever on the prairie and that he can settle down with Alice. However, a short while after Billy proposes, Alice becomes separated from the train and is embroiled in an attack led by a band of Native Americans. The final scene is a harrowing, dramatic, and sorrowful closure to one of the strongest of all the tales in the film.

I personally did not find the final tale of the six, entitled “The Mortal Remains,” to be up to par with the others, despite the promising premise. Tyne Daly, Brendan Gleeson, Jonjo O’Neil, Saul Rubinek, and Chelcie Ross star as a mixed bag of strangers sharing a stagecoach as they hurtle towards a mysterious hotel, with a corpse tied to the roof of the coach. The motley group engages in various conversations that impart themes as diverse as language, death, love, and class – and yet, it is this sort of bouncing around within the confined space of the stagecoach without settling on something major that throws this story off for me. Maybe there’s some sort of irony in “The Mortal Remains,” but whatever it is, is certainly lost on me – and in any case, despite this particular letdown, there was still lots more to enjoy in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” as the first five stories are all fine representatives of modern cinema speaking of a bygone era.

Spotlighting our Republican status THE theme for Mashramani this year is: “Celebrate Mash 49 with Victory in Mind”. I’d like to believe that this theme in itself calls for a deeper look at our current socio-economic and political situation, rather than just being a tagline that rhymes.

It’s nearing the end of the second month of the New Year. This was a year that the country, arguably, entered into with varying levels of hesitancy about the political sphere, owed to that fateful December 21 and the No-Confidence vote. This second month is important because it facilitates a heightened sense of patriotism.

The No-Confidence motion placed in a spotlight on many of the wrongs that exist at the ‘power’ level of our country. But, aside from the grand scheme to overthrow the elected government of the day, there is the issue of dual citizenship.

There have been tumultuous periods during Guyana’s history. These periods have been characterised by fear and insecurity.

Added to that, there is the pervasive brain

drain phenomenon where people (much like myself, I have no shame in admitting) are drawn to the seemingly bountiful academic opportunities that are beyond these shores, and then stay where those opportunities manifest. These are two reasons I have been using to justify the concept of dual citizenship.

And truly, I often find myself being easily swayed into seeing the best possible reason for everything, but even so, as my representative- how can you feel my struggle and know my fears, if you have the ability to up and leave ”just suh”? Some of my parliamentarians can upturn the entire notion of democracy I have in my head, and just up and head to the other country they have pledged allegiance to. It’s crazy to think about.

I’m still trying to navigate my feelings on this matter of dual citizenship, but now I’ll add in Republic Day. Now Guyana became a Republic on February 23, 1970- 49 years ago. During the very first year after the tumultuous 1960s decade, this country took the step to declare

itself a Republic.

In the simplest of terms, being a Republic means that there is a constitution that governs and protects the inalienable rights of all people. It also means that we have an executive President as our Head-of-State.

Republic Day is better known as Mashramani, or just Mash, which in itself connotes a celebration after hard work.

So these are two ideologies to ponder: the concept of having something that always protects your rights, which is celebrated on a day that celebrates hard work.

In my mind, I see that there’s a nexus between the No-Confidence vote and the Mash happenings. What we are confronted with now, is that we are being forced to remember who we are as a people and what we do. For me, the day is a reminder that Guyana has always emerged out of the shambles it has been thrown in- and so much so that it calls for a celebration. Some might say that’s propaganda, but in the grand scheme of things, any step in the right direction is a reason for celebration.

Now that I’ve established my sentiments on dual citizenship, I beg the question- why not rely on this constitution to serve and protect you- like everyone else? And how can you truly celebrate your Guyanese-ness, and the struggles we overcome (and then celebrate) when you have allegiance to another state?

In my humble opinion, I think that the Republic Day/ Mashramani celebrations fit well into what the country is experiencing.

We are confused, we are hesitant and we are awaiting solid and final answers about our country’s political future (which, by the way, affects our socio-economic future).

But importantly, what I think should be celebrated is that many wrongs have been exposed and we are now poised to correct these. And maybe we ought to let the full process take its course before making any pronouncements, but the fact remains that as a country (and as a people) we are more aware and we know what we ought to do in future. And for me- that’s a victory.

Making sweet music Hanani Ben Lewi

IF y o u are an ardent f o l lower of steelpan music, or even if you are an occasional supporter, there are a few names that would stand out. There are the greats that facilitated the introduction and growth of the instrument not so long ago, and there is the new generation of young people taking pan forward. And among that new generation, you would find Hanani Ben Lewi.

When he steps up to the steelpan, he is mostly an unsuspecting character. He is calm and composed, but there is a hint of playfulness on his face. His 10 years of experience shows.

By the time he begins putting his sticks onto the metallic surface of the instrumentyou would see why he stands out as an artiste.

Every limb of his body moves to the sound of the music he is creating while his face carries the most animated expressions.

“For me, pan is all about expression,” Hanani said. He also explained that it is one of his greatest loves.

So much is his love for the instrument that he made it a profession; he teaches music and English Literature (English B) at the Bishop’s High School and is also the head of the Bishop’s High School Steel Orchestra.

“I am a lover for everything African

and it’s an honour playing such an amazing instrument knowing that my ancestors, who were enslaved, got the skills, opportunity, and creativity to create a wonderful instrument,” he said. “And it’s the only instrument created in the 20th century and I think that this is something all Africans can be proud of.”

As a Guyanese and more so as an Afro-Guyanese, Hanani explained tha,t it is this bit of history on the instrument that underscores why steelpan has become ingrained in Guyana’s multicultural society.

“It gives me great joy that I can share this love for pan and this great enjoyment with people,” he highlighted.

The young man is a member of the Caribbean Airlines Parkside Steel Orchestra, as well, where he’s a section leader of the band.

He is also known for his prowess as a soloist. In fact, at the recent small band PanO-Rama competition, Hanani copped the first place position in the senior soloist category.

This win was his fourth first place solo position, but according to Hanani, he is looking to beat the record of the most solo wins by raking up at least 10 wins in all.

At the recent small band Pan-O-Rama, one of his students, Luana Barkoye, scored third in the junior soloist category.

In his solo category (where he scored first place), his bandmates copped the second and third positions. And in the duet segment, he and another band member copped the second

position while the second place position was maintained in the Pan Jazz category.

“We cleared that up, we were very proud about that,” Hanani shared.

He has also travelled to countries like Barbados and Suriname to represent Guyana, and that, for him, has instilled much pride and he is happy to have had the opportunity to represent his nation.

But for pan, his desire is to see it grow bigger and better in the country.

“I want a band in almost every school because…that would mean a lot more children doing music, and music helps with discipline and brain activity,” he explained.

Even if each school cannot have their own band, Hanani related that he hopes that there can be more bands like the Pan Wave Academy- which allows young people to learn the instrument after school. “[Young people] really want to do wholesome things, but if we don’t create that opportunity for them, the devil makes work for idle hands,” he said.

And of course, he said that he would like to see more ‘big bands’- just so that there’s more competition for him and his bandmates to devour.

“Once we have a large set of young people playing the instrument, we know that we have a future because we are investing in the young people,” he said.

On the frontline of Guyana’s natural capital THE key to effective governance is the complete dedication to the service of its people. Otherwise, how can the people reap all the benefits of citizenship?

In this edition of Government in Action, Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC), Mr. Trevor Benn, talks about the steps that the Commission has taken to better serve the people by increasing their access to land and by protecting the land.

SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT “The Sustainable Land Management project is designed to help… transform the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission… into a more modern organisation. It is our hope that by the end of this project, we could have an updated Land Information System that allows for our clients to be able to access real-time information about their individual transaction.

By the end of this project, we hope that we will have a more modern interface for the way we do business with members of the public, and it is our hope that we can bring down the time that people wait for these individual transactions,” Mr. Benn said.

The project is in its first year of implementation, but the Commission has already sought consultations on land policy issues, geospatial policy issues, and has completed a draft policy for geospatial information. Perhaps the most notable achievement to date is Guyana’s hosting of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) Conference, a convergence

of global land experts.

“Our major focus is updating our capacity to serve the Guyanese public in real time, to be able to respond to requests for land, to open up new areas, to be able to have our databases updated to allow for geospatial information, [and] to be available to set up coordination information across geospatial agencies,” he said.

Commissioner Benn also outlined the numerous ways Guyana stands to benefit from the successful implementation of this project.

“People can come to the office at the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, at any one of our regional offices and access real-time information about land availability.

We can reduce the amount of time that people take to receive a house lot or an agriculture lot,” he said.

Mr. Benn noted that real-time knowledge of the nature of land spaces will ensure that landowners receive the highest quality land for building or industry purposes.

“We [will] be able to tell the farmers, ‘this is a good rice producing area… as against sugar’ … and students doing research, geography or contractors, who want to know what the soil type is before constructing a building should be able to come and get that information. The Ministry of Public Health should be able to get… a map [that] shows the hot spots for measles … or the hot spots for water-borne diseases. We should be able to do that on a map for them across the country.

The Ministry of Education - we should be able to say this is where your schools are located on the map of Guyana and how to get to those schools… This is where we are heading with

Lands and Surveys so that this [office] could be a one-stop shop,” he said.

The Commission, Mr. Benn said, remains in the service of all Guyanese. “The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission is a non-political organisation that has the responsibility as a technical service agency to all Guyanese.

The service we provide here does not have a face…so, every Guyanese, any Guyanese, requiring the service can come to this office…

We have tried our best to make sure that everyone who comes through the door at Lands and Surveys has fair and equal treatment…

It is our obligation, once you approach us, to assist as best as we can. The staff at the Commission has been so advised… Regardless of who comes to the Commission, they must be facilitated,” he said.

A LESSON IN PREVENTION Land degradation occurs when land is negatively affected by human or natural disasters. Although prone to flooding, Guyana is relatively low risk for land degradation but Head of the Land Policy Planning and Projects Division, Ms. Andrea Mohammed, does not take this status for granted, instead, she says, the Commission stays on the front lines of prevention.

“The principle of prevention is better than fixing the problem after it has occurred…

Guyana wants to be in a state of preparedness and we do not want to have to go through some of the issues that other countries… in terms of the cost of land degradation and the cost of reclamation… We want to have policies in place… We want to [build the

capacity] of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission and our stakeholders to ensure that we do not go through some of the impacts of land degradation which affect livelihoods.

It affects investments. Land is very important.

It provides our food, where we live, areas for investors. We do not want to [disrupt] that,” she said.

This effort is bolstered by a thorough Land Use Policy, currently being drafted by the Commission, which will ensure that updated and timely information is being provided to all stakeholders. This, Ms. Mohammed said, paired with up-to-date mapping, provides response personnel with essential information in the event of a natural disaster.

“As soon as an area is affected… the mapping is supposed to be so updated that whoever is responding should be able to go directly to the targeted area that is affected…

Having updated maps and detailed maps mean that extension officers [can] quickly go to their computers, access these maps, and know directly where to go… So having a very good database… and having it linked to the maps means that we can have very quick access to address a situation,” she said.

Ms. Mohammed further explained that having updated maps would allow stakeholders, to determine who, or what is affected during an emergency and to what extent.

“Having updated maps, with all of this information, means that you would be able to assess the kind of response needed. You would know who the stakeholders are, who should be there, and what kind of actions are required for disaster response... We would have knowledge information of whom and what is being affected,” he said.

PROTECTING OUR PATRIMONY In January 2018, Guyana signed on to the four-year $15 million Sustainable Land Management Development Plan, financed by the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund (GRIF).

Minister of Finance, Mr. Winston Jordan, who attended the signing ceremony, said that the project, once implemented, will be a guiding light in the sustainable use of Guyana’s Land.

“The overarching goal of sustainable land management should be to contribute to Government projects and programmes that are aimed at achieving poverty reduction [and] economic growth while promoting the full utilisation of land resources in a sustainable manner. As such, issues that have to do with improving land tenure security, enhancing the efficiency, transparency and improving service delivery and enhancing local government capacity to undertake land

“Reckless use and management of land can impact adversely on the environment and citizens’ quality of life. Land degradation has the potential to affect food security, sustainable livelihoods, poverty reduction and social stability. Guyana, therefore, recognises the importance of protecting its land assets. It knows that land degradation

will result in natural resource depletion which, if not controlled, will lead to underdevelopment.

The Head of State added, “We shall also promote more efficient mining and logging practices, including post-extractive land reclamation; push sustainable forestry practices including reduced-impact logging and improved forest monitoring and pursue mineral mapping so [as] to identify areas of marginal, or less than viable, mineral deposits. These are some of the steps at the international level to which Guyana has agreed in order to protect its patrimony and in order to provide environmental services to the rest of humanity.”

The Government of Guyana continues to protect the integrity of this great resource while ensuring that all of Guyana’s children have access to her land and her natural patrimony.

Books more aid in memory improvement because it takes more brain power to remember characters, situations etc. in a book than it would in a movie, mainly because it is not from visual memory. You simply have to remember descriptions that you personally have enhanced. We have all had that experience

when watching a movie where you remember a character by simply his face, even though he/she didn’t play a big role.

This is not an option in books and can make our minds lazy.

I think the most important is that reading takes you into your own imaginative world. With television, a person, place, situation – an entire world is built for you. However, when reading, you envision your own world – what people and places look or act like beyond the description. An example

The launching of the Green Note can be seen as a step forward for the agency, as we seek to expand our communication platforms and enlighten the public on not only the work of the agency, but also current environmental events through a convenient and “easy-to-read” medium.

THE KEY PURPOSE The agency is committed to raising awareness and educating the public on pertinent matters relative to human health and the environment. The Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05, Laws of Guyana, mandates the agency to “provide information and education to the public…” on matters relating to environmental conservation and management. Ultimately, this reader-friendly magazine comes on the heels of the agency’s TV programme, “The Environment Matters” and complements the existing communication and awareness tools.

The Green Note is intriguing and captures not only articles about the EPA and its work, but a wide cross-section of stakeholders from non-governmental organisations, the private sector, government ministries etc. There is an article of interest to everyone, including youths and children.

Additionally, the magazine provides an overview of the country’s implementation of the Green State Development Strategy.

WHAT’S INSIDE? As readers flip through the pages of the magazine, there is something for everyone- young and old. The agency is proud of this accomplishment and is confident that this publication will increase the organisation’s visibility and positively change the public’s perception of the EPA as the lead Environmental Regulator in Guyana. Likewise, Green Note serves as a conduit for relevant and up-to-date information being diffused into the public and private domains; locally, regionally and internationally. Within this publication, there are features that would interest; farmers who might be intrigued by green technology used in agriculture; a teacher looking to start an environmental club; a housewife looking to find sustainable ways of disposing domestic waste; a developer seeking information on Environmental Authorisation; or anyone interested in the measures that are taken locally to transition Guyana into a Green State.

THE LAUNCH The Green Note magazine was officially launched on Friday, February 15, 2019, at the Umana Yana. Representatives from various private and government organisations were invited to witness this historical event. The agency will be distributing many more to all the ministries and other agencies. Society and menstruation SOMETIME ago, I stumbled upon a meme online that read, “Condoms should be sold and sanitary pads should be shared for free, sex is a choice while a woman’s period is not.” I was bemused by those words because I came to the realisation that a woman’s period is actually a marketing strategy for many brands. In fact, studies have shown that some brands actually make medications with the same ingredients of a regular pain killer and label it as ‘period painkillers’. They tend to retail the ones ‘for menstruation’ at a more expensive price compared to the regular medications. Sanitary pad commercials showcase the “gallons” of liquid a pad can absorb, but yet still the average woman uses 10,000 to 15,000 sanitary pads in her lifetime. You can do the math to come up with the excessive amount of dollars women have to spend.

Why is it that in high school my friends and I came up with nicknames and phrases for our periods (red car, time of the month, Pee-pee)? Or every month a woman is so paranoid that she asks her friends to check for red spots on her light colored pants or skirts? Last week’s column was focused mainly on what the menstrual cycle is, while this week’s piece shines light on the social perception of periods.

Aleeya Sugrim, a young teacher at the Berbice Islamic School shared her thoughts on the topic: “Within our culture we are told that menstrual functions are something to be hidden, something shameful. That is why persons find all these different code names for it, so as to hide it. [One] superstition I heard was that if I touch a tree, it will become barren and die or that if anyone touches me, they become unclean.

Menstruation is a normal female body function and should not be hidden. Women do not deserve to be treated as unclean because our body is having a normal function.

I would say to the young girls to get themselves educated about menstruation. These negative attitudes are shown towards menstruation because of the lack of information about it. We tend to believe cultural stereotypes when we don’t have enough information so let us educate ourselves on this normal body function.”

One can only imagine how awful it must be to be homeless or financially unstable and also have your period every month. Homeless and less-fortunate women would use reusable rags and cloths. Next time you see a desolate female, make sure you share some of your new sanitary pads with her. With the exception of pads, there are also menstrual cups, tampons, period underwear and slowly emerging, there are now bio-degradable sanitary pads because 90 per cent of traditional pads are made with plastic.

For centuries, women have always been controlled by the social oppression of the idea that periods are disgusting and should not be talked about. Track your periods by means of modern period tracking apps; talk to both female and male colleagues; educate them more on this topic, speak up and against someone who discriminates women and periods.

Menstruation and sex are complimentary, from the beginning of time women have been giving birth and experiencing menstruation. Never be ashamed, it is a gift to be a woman and birth life. Our female ancestors before us struggled. They had no idea what a pad was, what sex education is or was; were always taught to be quiet about the passing of blood through their thighs, so stop hiding your pads and tampon boxes on the way to the bathroom or when you’re shopping at the grocery store. I’ll end this by sharing a poem that seeks to celebrate the humanity of women: ‘Menstruation is the only blood that is tied to creation, but you prefer the kind that is tied to death, because the red dripping from a man’s head is strength but the red dripping between a woman’s thighs is filth even though that is the only kind that brings life.’

The IAS launches Annual NewsLetter ‘Getting to the heart of Stigma’

“WE must start the difficult conversations, take action when we bear witness to a stigmatising incident, and hold ourselves to higher and more inclusive moral standards.”

So says Chief Executive Officer of the International AIDS Society, Kevin Osborne. He was at the time alluding to ‘stigma’, a damaging reaction meted out to Persons Living with HIV/AIDS. The occasion was the launch of the IAS Annual News Letter on Valentine’s Day. Cognisant that stigma drives HIV underground and of the damaging effects it could have on persons living with HIV/ AIDS, the International AIDS Society has, this year, dedicated its fourth Annual Letter to addressing the underlying issue of HIV: stigma.

IAS ANNUAL LETTER 2019 The IAS Annual Letter was launched on February 14 under the theme: “Getting to the heart of stigma.” The Annual Letter will serve as the start of a stigma-focused agenda that the IAS will prioritise throughout 2019 and build on for the future,” the CEO said.

The CEO has expressed confidence that: “Together, we can all change the narratives that fuel HIV-related stigma, by starting the difficult conversations, taking action when we bear witness to a stigmatising incident and holding ourselves to higher and more inclusive standards.”

“The #HeartofStigma campaign is aimed at shifting the narratives that drive HIV-related stigma,” the CEO said, adding that it starts with the IAS Annual Letter as the core statement, in addition to featuring personal stories and experiences by people ‘in all shapes and sizes’, regardless of social or economic standing, gender or sexual preference, geographic background or skin colour.

“We can get to the #HeartofStigma by both calling out the discriminatory laws, policies and practices across a range of settings around the world that further encourage stigmatising behaviour as a social norm, as well as where stigma is being successfully challenged,” he said.

Remembering Kescia Branche

The murdered school teacher, Kescia Branche (left) and her twin sister, Kessandra, in happier times.

By Michel Outridge MORE than 15 months later and the relatives of former Richard Ishmael Secondary School teacher, Kescia Tanya Branche are still awaiting justice following her brutal murder back in 2017.

She would have celebrated her 24th birthday last Tuesday (February 12, 2019), along with her twin sister, Kessandra, who is married and lives abroad.

Branche, a mother of one, who resided in Cummings Lodge, Greater Georgetown, was last seen on November 4, 2017, when she left for a night out with friends. It was the last time she was seen alive.

That evening she was observed at several places, but her movements after that remain unknown, until she was found on the roadway mortally wounded.

She was found in an unconscious state in the vicinity of Princes Street and Louisa Row the following day. Her left leg was broken and there was evidence that she had sustained multiple head injuries.

The young woman died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) two days after being found battered.

A post-mortem indicated that she died as a result of a brain haemorrhage.

Branche’s mother, Sonita Scott, who wasa teacher in the Bahamas returned home after her daughter’s murder, and is still here along with her youngest daughter, Kereece.

The grieving woman reached out to the Pepperpot Magazine, still pleading for justice, she contended that she needs closure and wants the person(s) responsible to go before the court.

Scott told the Pepperpot Magazine that since her daughter’s demise she has never been the same, and is still trying to come to grips with the loss, two years on.

Following Kescia’s murder, several persons were questioned but one Matthew Munroe, 47, a taxi driver was charged in December 2017 for the crime and is in jail awaiting trial.

Chicken, Spinach and Nut Stew Recipe

INGREDIENTS 1 chicken, 2-3 lb 10 bundles spinach (spear-shaped leaves) 1 onion, chopped 2 oz margarine 1 pt stock 2-3 tbsp chopped parsley 2-3 tbsp chopped eschalot 1 lb parched nuts, finely chopped METHOD 1 Cut chicken into pieces and season with salt and white pepper.

2 Clean spinach and cook in boiling salted water for about 5 minutes.

3 Drain spinach and chop finely.

4 Saute onion in the margarine. Add chicken pieces and fry lightly.

Add stock.

5 Cover and allow to cook thoroughly.

6 Add celery, eschalot, chopped spinach and nuts, and cook for a further 5 minutes.

7 Remove from heat. Serve with yam foo-foo.

Serves 8-10
