Guyanese heroes in our midst

A YEAR ago, in the midst of the early raging of the COVID-19 pandemic onslaught which engulfed countries worldwide, including Guyana, 33 brave and patriotic Guyanese got together with dedicated minds. Their mission was to establish another branch of a well-known and respected organisation. It was the newly established Rotary Club of Garden City, Georgetown. The decision by those patriotic city folk proved that there are those Guyanese who do not go around only complaining and criticising every person and possible thing they can.

On the other hand, some set out to improve their communities. They are those citizens who look for and do the positive things as often as they can, and usually, as best and as quietly as they can. They “Just Do It,”

many times unconsciously, to improve the quality of life for themselves and others.

A good percentage of Guyanese look for solutions to the problems and challenges around them and get on with it to solve those problems. In their minds, like thousands of fellow Guyanese, they realise that the country is far behind where it ought to have been along the Highway of Development at this time. For example, after well over 55 years of independence, Guyana is still grappling with the lack of dependable electricity supply in the city and across the country. There is also the issue of the poor quality of service with public transportation, which is responsible for a high percentage of the public’s transportation needs.

about many times in the past, hoping that there will be improvements in the future.

on minibuses being driven over the lawful speed limits.

Minibus operators need to understand and show by the service which they deliver that their job is one of service to their paying customers.

They need to do everything within their power to provide a service of comfort and safety. Indeed, there are those minibus operators who do deliver excellent service and can be regarded as unsung heroes in our midst.

Waiting for more heroes A prediction has only just been published, stating that Georgetown will, by 2035, be submerged under feet of water. Some citizens

are predicting that there are those structures which are now standing, will probably collapse due to their poor construction.

There are some buildings in the city that allegedly have been constructed with more stories than were officially approved. While it is true that some buildings in the city seem to be poorly constructed, many seem as though they will stand the test of time and will be standing strong decades to come; especially those constructed with clay bricks such as the National Insurance Scheme building on Brickdam in Georgetown.

Some citizens make themselves part of the solution to whatever are the

problems in the society. For example, if they lock eyes with someone of another race, they would immediately flash a smile which would mean so much for race relations. A genuine smile more often than not brings inner joy to the recipient. Maybe those who share smiles freely should also be considered as heroes in their own way, bearing in mind, more often than not, how smiles are infectious to friendliness. The work which has already been done by the Rotary Club of Garden city, Georgetown, during the past year, is to be commended and to extend to its 33 members best wishes for continuing service in the coming years.

International Men’s Day 2021 Guyanese Environmental and Human Rights lawyer with a passion for gender and equality issues

SAEED Hamid seeks to manage his time well by planning ahead for his day and gauging his work daily to ensure that he is not just putting out an optimum level of service, but that he’s keeping on top of his mental health as well.

Work tends to get overwhelming at times, and being the young legal professional that he is, Saeed’s plate is quite full as an Environmental and Human Rights lawyer. At just 28 years old, he’s already held a few prestigious offices and is yet on his way to another in January at the Guarini Law Center, New York University.

Passionate about societal issues, Saeed, a graduate of the University of Guyana, the Hugh Wooding Law School, and the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, has a special interest in gender and equality.

Climate change and other environmental concerns are also top of his list and he is especially keen on observing how these matters affect everyday life and human rights.

Apart from these, Saeed, a former student of St. Rose’s High, is also interested in migration issues such as the influx of persons from all over the world to Guyana.

Reflecting on how it all got started, Saeed told the Pepperpot Magazine recently that he’s always had a liking for debating in high school.

“Having to do the research, prepare the presentations and then having to deliver them intensified my interests in these areas and that’s what led to me pursuing law and doing a masters.”

Currently, he’s working on a Marine Plastic Pollution project at the New York University (NYU) to eventually be able to formulate a treaty to prevent plastic pollution.

“Plastic is something we use every day and it poses a problem because plastic lasts for over a thousand years; it can’t be broken down. So by 2050, there will actually be more plastic than fish in the sea,” he pointed out.

This project affects many CARICOM countries and small island states that may come together to form a global solution to tackle marine pollution.

Saeed spent two years working at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and after just the first year, he was promoted to head of the legal department. “It was kind of unheard of for a 27-year-old attorney to be heading a legal department. When I’m always the youngest in the room, there’s always that kind of pressure, but you also feel a sense of pride at being among all these luminaries; you feel a sense of accomplishment,” he shared.

“My goal at the end of it is to become an ambassador for Guyana and to contribute to national development and to ensure that Guyana is portrayed on the international scene for what it really is - a true haven,” he expressed.

Saeed also manages a non-governmental organisation called Frens, that works with underprivileged youths and persons with disabilities. Having co-founded it in 2016, the organisation helps to raise money to help persons with ‘COVID-19 hampers’ and back-to-school items, etc.

As mentioned earlier, Saeed is big on proper time management. “I try to ensure I take a weekend off, or a road trip, or hang out with a friend or go to the park and take some photos.

There’s this perception that men shouldn’t be concerned about mental health issues, but I try to keep on top of mine,” he said.

As such, Saeed loves to dabble in art and photography and would even feature some of his work at display booths and exhibitions. “I like to ensure a balanced life, because there’s a lot going on in my work life.

I try not to work on weekends and bring work home.

My goal is to do as much as I can now, so I can rest later in life,” he expressed.

At just 28 years old, Saeed has already held a few prestigious offices and is yet on his way to another at New York University.

Men are not in competition with women; they complement women - Local pastor shares thoughts on men’s roles in honour of International Men’s Day

By Dillon Goring Every Year, November 19 is observed as “International Men’s Day”.

This year’s observance was held under the theme, “Gender Equality is the Goal. Not Female Dominance” At times like these, it is worthwhile to hear from notable voices in society, their perspective on the issues surrounding the challenges men face in the modern world and possible solutions.

Speaking with Pastor of the First Assemblies of God, Raphael Jackman, he expressed his belief that the most influential men are the ones who have major challenges in life, but still have resolved that they can’t go forward without seeking help from like-minded individuals.

He noted that only the dead have no challenges and rising up to overcome life’s challenges demands the attitude of not giving up or giving in.

“To overcome demands an assessment of the situation and the Godly Wisdom to see it both spiritually and naturally, and choose to use the wisdom that is superior to the natural world’s way of addressing challenges,” the pastor explained.

“Success can and is viewed through different lenses, depending on the belief orientation of the individual (different strokes for different folks). For me, success is measured with the yardstick of fulfilling my God-given purpose, which demands that I maintain a spiritual outlook on every aspect of my life… and not conforming to the natural world’s system of measurement.”

The pastor reiterated the fact that men folk must realise that they are not in competition with our female counterparts.

It should be clear, therefore, that in every man’s mind, they are not superior to anyone else, but are given the responsibility to complement females. It is achieved best by serving them

with excellence, which in turn opens the heart /mind of female counterparts to respond in like manner, he said He detailed and spoke to the issue of overcoming life’s challenges while at the same time giving way to new opportunities.

“Overcoming every challenge demands having a different perspective of the challenges, which gives way to new opportunities,” he said, explaining that crisis often gives way to an opportunity to make things better, or watch it get worst.

“When I consider a crisis as an opportunity, my renewed mind can only think of the purpose or reason this crisis is manifested in my life. In my past I would blame myself and others for my situation, but I have also learnt the principle, ‘whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap’,” he said.

Teaching Point for men As a religious leader, the pastor, naturally had some advice from a religious perspective on how men can overcome their challenges. First, he advised that men must speak positive or negative things into our lives.

“It is God who dictates what we have to deal with in this life, hence, he protects us from some things, and he guides us through some, and delivers us from some,” he said. He added that manhood is God-created so it must be realistic, it would be wise to accept who you are created to be.

“I have seen men get married instead of living home, runaway husbands and fathers return to their families, and wayward boys accept counsel and have found their niche and become an asset in society,” he said. “Men who were contemplating suicide have a change of heart. There is one way that I know that can make a man influence for good and that’s by finding his purpose …influencing other men to look forward to the next generation to who discover who he is, and what his responsibilities are as a son, brother, uncle, nephew, and last but not least a husband.”

However, the relationship of tourism with the environment is complex. It involves many activities that can have adverse environmental effects. Many of these impacts are linked with the construction of general infrastructure such as roads and airports and tourism facilities, including resorts, hotels, restaurants, shops, golf courses, and marinas. The negative impacts of tourism development can gradually destroy environmental resources on which it depends. On the other hand, tourism, specifically eco-tourism, can create beneficial effects on the environment by contributing to environmental protection and conservation. It is a way to raise awareness of environmental values and it can serve as

The Infrastructure and Project Management Department at the EPA is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that tourism operations are compliant with the agency’s rules and regulations. This entails the Environmental Authorisation process, which identifies potential sources of pollution and proposes measures that would minimise negative impacts.

The department also conducts inspections of existing operations such as hotels and resorts and works with the Communications Department to produce educational materials for the sector. Some environmental considerations in the tourism sector include water quality and availability, solid-waste management, sewage, and impacts to local communities.

Various types and components of tourism operations produce very different environmental impacts, requiring very different environmental management tools. This is why the EPA’s permit conditions vary for the different types of activities that fall under the tourism sector. Most environmental technologies used in tourism already exist in other sectors.

The agricultural village of Lochaber A quiet place for a good family-oriented life

By Michel Outridge THIS week the Pepperpot Magazine visited the quiet farming village of Lochaber, West Canje Berbice, to highlight the way of life of the locals.

This small agricultural community is located about 15 minutes from New Amsterdam and is bordered by Sandvoort and Vryheid villages.

With just over 150 residents, the people are familiar with each other and the locals are of mixed ethnicities, with the majority being East Indians and Afro Guyanese.

The people are humble and lead simple lives as rice farmers, cash-crop farmers, livestock and poultry farmers, some small-business folk and some private and public sector employees who work outside the village.

Lochaber Village has a Primary and Nursery School housed in one building, one the main access road which is about a mile long, is an all-weather road.

It has a Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) facility, a cellphone tower and a newly painted bus shed just opposite the school and some small shops. The village also has a community centre ground.

is usually played there when the weather is good and people would utilise the wooden pavilion for comfort.

The nearest health centre is located a village away in Sandvoort and it has several churches, mandirs and a mosque.

Most of the adults are employed at the Blairmont Sugar Estate.

The village comes under the Wyburg/Caracas Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), which oversees three villages along that stretch of road.

Most of the women are homemakers and small-businesses operators and a handful are poultry, cattle and

livestock farmers.

In almost every yard, the people grow their own fruits and vegetables and have gardens of bountiful plants and flowers.

Lochaber Village has two internal streets, several small alleyways, and a trench on one side.

The locals, most of them have lived their entire lives in the village and the people co-exist in relative peace and calm.

It is one of those villages where nobody is in a rush and things seem to move along in slow succession with the intermittent passage of roadside taxis and cattle that break the silence of time.

In this village, the cows and other animals such as sheep and goats roam the community freely, since there is no pasture for grazing.

Lochaber Village is a tranquil place to reside and the people seem very comfortable in that side of Berbice, where they go about their daily routines in an absolutely carefree manner with little or nothing to worry about.

It is a very safe village where doors are not locked, there are no strangers, and the people look out for each other and there aren’t any thieves.

The people of Lochaber Village

IT is often said locally that no matter where we go, we always return to these shores, Guyana, the place of our birth, our oasis, and the same can be said for holidaying Sandra Nowrang, who resides overseas but is home for the holidays.

She wanted to have a traditional Guyanese Christmas with black cake, Pepperpot, ginger beer and all the local goodies usually prepared for the festive season.

Nowrang told the Pepperpot Magazine that Lochaber Village, West Canje, Berbice, is her home village and she grew up there and is familiar with the people, but migrated and would always find her way back here for some time.

She recalled growing up, they used to know the time because of the Canje Estate whistle/horn which blew at certain hours and they would use that to get ready for school or wake up in the morning to prepare for the day.

Nowrang was at her sister’s house, which is part of a large corner plot, family-owned and it also has her house, which is outfitted with a vegetable garden and a flower garden.

The overseas-based Guyanese reported that Lochaber was a plantation when the Canje Estate was in operation; she was a small girl and her parents had a little house back then.

Her house overlooks the canefield, where there is a canal.

Nowrang added that her mother is still alive, she is 81 and her sister would take care of her and ensure that her needs are met.

She stated that her parents were hard working-class people who put food on the table and made sure they went to school and had a lot of livestock in those days.

The family was large with seven siblings and her parents; it was a full house but back then, things were simple and less complicated.

She pointed out that they enjoyed their childhood and the things they did then for fun, were catching fish in the

their bicycles to go out the village, especially when they had to go to New Amsterdam, which is about a 15-minute drive away.

Nowrang stated that they also went to church in Sandvoort, the neighbouring village, and the people co-existed all the years and nothing about that has changed over time.

“The best part about growing up here was the smell of burnt sugar-cane when the estate was in operation. I remember we used to get a few pieces to eat and it was really a good smell,” she said.

Realising her dream of being self-sufficient in Lochaber Village

By Michel Outridge LIFE for some, living in the city or an upscale neighbourhood, is a ‘big thing,’ but for Viola Alexander, these things do not excite her, since she is accustomed to residing in a small rural village in Guyana.

The villager stated that the best part about living in the community is that she is by herself and has the privacy she needs and has been there for the past 24 years.

“Around here, life is how you make it and for you to have a good life, you must be working, an income must be coming in the home from somewhere and the best way to have your own money to spend is to work for it,” she said.

According to Alexander, she came to the village and heard that Lochaber means looking after each other and she sums it up, saying: ‘It’s like minding each other’s businesses, but this could not be verified, since the elders of the village have all passed on.

“Around here, it is one way, go to work, come home or stay at home and do things to make a living and often if there is any drama in the village, all would come out for the show,” she said.

With a spacious yard, Alexander is cultivating greens and fruits and has 57 meat birds and some pigs, which were in separate pens in the backyard.

Alexander disclosed that after her husband passed away, she had to do things to offset expenses in the home and started rearing chickens and pigs.

The vegetables would be used in the kitchen and the fruits sold or shared within the village to neighbours.

There are two houses on her plot of land: a small wooden cottage which was her first home and the other a newly built one-storey house a few yards away.

She has a fireside and would use it when the weather is in her favour and some dogs as pets.

Alexander is a pleasant person, who is always up for a chat and she has a friendly disposition which draws people to her.

The churches in Lochaber Village have been fostering good relations with the community

By Michel Outridge THE church often has an impact on the community, and in Lochaber Village, West Canje, Berbice, the Seventh-Day Adventist Church does its part in galvanising the relationship with community members.

Bernadette Philips is a member of the church and also the Treasurer and oversees operations of the Community Service Department within the congregation.

She disclosed that annually, between January and February, that arm of the church would go out into the community and they would solicit funds for humanitarian projects.

“A lot of times the church members would put their own money and whatever the people in the village donate it would add up and do a lot such as assisting the sick, pay for medical assistance and Pastor Adrian Austin offer donations if there is a death in the village towards the funeral expenses,” she said.

“Bernie,” as she is fondly called, is well-known in Lochaber Village and she has been involved in church work for more than 20 years and she finds it to be fulfilling, because they have reached out to a lot of people who are thankful.

Philips stated that there are 30 active members in the church on roll, but they have about 50 members in total and the community and church have good relations.

She pointed out that every five years, the pastor of the church would change.

Philips related that the church did a project with the Lochaber Primary School and they constructed the canteen and would yearly donate trophies to the top performers.

In addition, the church also distributed a sanitation hamper to every household this year and they would often visit the sick and shut-ins and make a donation of a food basket.

Philips is originally from California, East Bank Berbice, but moved to Lochaber Village when she got married and has been there for 29 years.

She likes the small village and its quiet peacefulness and also noted that it is a very safe place to live, because the people live in harmony.

“To maintain good relations with the community, we have to continue to make strides in our humanitarian drive,” she said.

The New Generational Rise International Ministry Church Meanwhile, the other church in Lochaber Village is the New Generational Rise International Ministry and the pastor is Adrian Austin.

Pastor Austin told the Pepperpot Magazine that the church’s founder is Indradai Budhan, who hails from Vryheid Village and the church was established 10 years ago.

He reported that on Sunday last they had a harvest and birth-anniversary celebration for the founder, Indradai Budhan, who celebrated her 80th. The people of the village were invited and they showed up.

Austin added that the women’s arm of the church was responsible for pulling off the event and it was a success and the 15 members did well as usual.

He reported that the church is expected to partner with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to embark on several community-based projects and he has only been at the church as the pastor for eight months.

Austin stated that he is in the getting-to-know stage still and is hoping to grow out of that, because there is so much to be done.

“The church is opened to all, even those of different religious beliefs and I would reach out to as many people as I can,” he said.

Austin told the Pepperpot Magazine that in March next year the church is planning to have its 10th-anniversary celebrations and they would like to invite the villagers where public servants such as teachers, doctors, nurses and UG students will be awarded for their contributions to society.

He is also hoping to establish an alumni association and they have been counselling the youths of Angoy’s Avenue (Cow Dam) and their objective is to reform youths in that depressed

community.

Austin related that the church also has a charity aspect and they have since partnered with another church, New Christian Flow Ministry, a U.S.-based church headed by Pastor Dwayne Waterman.

Lochaber Village is poised for development

By Michel Outridge THE Chairman of Wyburg/Caracas Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) is Cheemanlall Youradhan, who owns one of the shops in the village.

Plantation Lochaber, as he refers to the village, was once an estate that cultivated cotton, rice and sugar and the early settlers were freed slaves.

Today, their descendants still occupy the lands, but it is a small village tucked between a few other communities along that stretch of road in West Canje, Berbice.

The chairman told the Pepperpot Magazine that the NDC is responsible for four villages in the constituency, including Rising Sun, which has only about five houses, an up-and-coming village.

Youradhan stated that

He added that the locals

also requested that the internal streets in the village be upgraded, which is in a crush and run state, instead of asphalt.

done to fill the potholes in the internal streets and some new street lights will be installed on the main access road.

He disclosed that the current street lights have outlived their usefulness and there is a need for new ones, which was acquired through the regional administration but are yet to be installed.

Youradhan told the Pepperpot Magazine that the people of Lochaber are simple and some are self-employed, while others work at the Blairmont Sugar Estate or in New Amsterdam.

In terms of development, the chairman noted that they have 15 Community Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP) workers in their employ and they are responsible for the maintenance of drains, trenches and parapets in the village.

He stated that at the community level, they have maintained the drainage canal that runs through the village and that is about 4000 rods of infrastructural works done.

Youradhan added that the village has a Primary School which also houses the Nursery School, a few churches, a bus shed and some shops.

The 69-year-old was a vendor for most of her adult life and she started out selling eggs and layers

her husband, who was a cane-cutter, in bringing in an income, since they had five girls and a boy to support.

Somwaru is originally from Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, but relocated to Lochaber Village, West Canje, after marriage.

Her husband is from the village and in 1970, they tied the knot and began a family.

“Life is very quiet, a good neighbourhood to reside and set a good example for the children, because there are things to do to make a living,” she said.

Today, Somwaru is retired and is taking life one day at a time. Being advanced in age, she would supervise the home in which the extended family lives and sit in her hammock to enjoy some country breeze.

She has a shop, a wellstocked place and one can get every little thing there; it is a mini one stop shop and the locals support the small business.

Her only son would assist in running the shop, but he is not in good health and has a pastime rearing birds; he has about two dozen and a half.

Meanwhile, Somwaru’s husband Mahendra was an estate worker for 17 years and he drove the sugar tractor.

Somwaru told the Pepperpot Magazine that vehicles would pass with fresh greens and other things, so things are within reach and they really don’t have to go

Usually, users are awarded a certificate and token for completing all modules of the app.

HerVenture was first launched in 2018 and was developed to empower and provide women owners and aspiring owners with the knowledge and skills to invest in their personal development and skills, and successfully grow their businesses.

“Through HerVenture, the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women provided access to thousands of women so they can leverage mobile technology, learning flexibility, skills development and business growth at the same time, as well as be empowered to close the gender gap in economic participation,” Simon explained.

The app was first developed and piloted in 2018 in Indonesia and Vietnam; in 2019 it was launched in Nigeria, in 2020 it was brought to Kenya and South Africa and recently in 2021, it was launched in Guyana.

The few small shops are fully stocked and vehicles vending goods and other supplies would visit to ply their trade in this village.

There is no shortage of fresh, organic vegetables and fruits in this village, but other goods are purchased in New Amsterdam, which is a 15-minute drive away.

The villagers are thriving for self-sufficiency and they rely on each other for support in terms of buying and selling greens, fruits and meat.

A handful of vendors reside in this village and they sell in the New Amsterdam Market and other parts of the Ancient County to earn.

Lochaber Village was a plantation and the Canje Sugar Estate had its operation there many decades ago before it was closed.

The people of this small village would catch fish in the trenches and canals in the community, and do other things to make a living.

It is a place where they eat fresh-caught fish, hand-picked vegetables and fruits and drink cow’s milk as part of their daily diet.

Lochaber Village is a good place for a quiet, peaceful family life and it is a place where the children can be seen playing cricket on the main access road.

The village has a potable water supply, electricity, landline and internet services.

The climate talks lived up to my expectations THE United Nations climate talks- COP26- as this year’s conference was more commonly known ended last week. And while those two weeks allowed many to fixate on climate change issues and advocate for greater mitigation measures, I felt as though the event lived up to my expectations. That is, that by the end of it I was as disappointed and disheartened as the cynical side of me believed I would be.

The climate talks started, as we say in our local parlance, “hot and sweaty.”

World leaders emphasised the severe risks of climate change and acknowledged that smaller countries are threatened with significant losses and damage. But, as the talks shifted from the political statements to the negotiations, things started to be very different. That is, it proved that the grandiose statements might have just been empty rhetoric.

Apparently, we don’t care about climate change as much as we think we do.

A colleague in the United States recently asked me why is climate change such an important conversation-for people generally, but young folk like myself in Guyana as well. There are so many ways I could have answered that question, but what was most important to me at that time was the threat of flooding the capital city Georgetown faces.

by Climate Central, using information from the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Georgetown is one of the cities projected to be underwater by 2030.

That means by the time I am just 30 years old, if climate change isn’t mitigated, I wouldn’t only be thinking about building a house, opening a business, or starting a family. I would also have to think about whether the city where I live would be underwater and what that means for life as I know it.

For context, the IPCC is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations responsible for advancing knowledge

on human-induced climate change. And this report has emphasised just how serious the threat of climate change is, more so if all countries of the world do not take the necessary action to slow global warming.

Those actions include less deforestation, reducing the harmful greenhouse gases that we use; using more renewable energy sources such as hydropower or solar and wind energy; and making adequate money available to small island developing states and low-lying countries, so that these countries can build resiliency to the climate disasters.

Despite this report and despite the very real effects of climate change seen (just look at the nationwide flooding Guyana experienced this year), COP26 did not deliver the ambitions we needed (and not just wanted).

What was particularly disheartening was the parties’ failure to establish a new ‘loss and damage’ fund that would help vulnerable countries withstand the effects of climate change and help protect themselves from events such as rising sea levels and flooding. Instead, commitments were made to initiate a dialogue on the “arrangements for the funding of activities to avert, minimise and address loss and damage.”

Disappointed? Certainly.

Surprised? Not the least.

Speaking candidly, I think part of me already knew that getting developed countries to commit to funding for the losses and damage experienced by smaller, developing countries- which, by the way, contribute the least to climate change, yet are among those countries most affected.

At the very opening of COP26, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley lamented that unless crucial measures are taken to limit global warming and protect smaller developing countries from further devastation, the outlook for our countries is a literal death sentence.

And, the prime minister called out developing countries for failing to finance

the US$100 billion sum for Small Island and Developing States (SIDS)—such as Guyana.

Her statements were made at the very beginning of this year’s COP and one can argue that they were a curtain-raiser for the events that would follow and the commitments that would be

made. And, well, here we are without a loss-and-damage fund, despite widespread acknowledgement of the impact of climate change on smaller developing countries.

While I believe that necessary climate finance should have been provided this year, I am comforted by the fact that the “dialogue” opens the

door to further discussions on this and potentially something that makes you hold onto hope a little longer, no matter how faint that hope is.

Maybe next year, when COP27 goes to Egypt, we can see more meaningful commitments, particularly on climate finance. Maybe we won’t. But, the fact that the

possibility exists keeps me going (for now) and keeps my mind off of the impending flooding of Georgetown.

What is significant is that many art pieces ended up in possession of Nazi Art thieves and are still most likely in German and most other Western museums.

Despite the accusations of inferior art and condemnations, the art was not destroyed. Its degeneracy was not reduced to ashes, it was permitted to survive, but it seemed a good promotional campaign to steal the soul of another, after first condemning what you admire or cannot contextualise. The irony of it all, is that the top collector employed by the Nazis was himself Jewish, Hildebrand Gurlitt. How is ‘period stigma’ affecting women and girls in Guyana?

THIS week’s column piece is quite personal and was triggered because of some social media posts I’ve seen recently on the stigmatising of women’s menstrual cycles. I’ve decided to make it personal because it hits home for me. I’m very familiar with the shame, disgust and stigmatisation that surround a woman’s period.

From my very first period to now, after all these years, I’m still puzzled as to why something that naturally occurs to us is “taboo” in

many aspects of our culture and everyday life. You’d think the year is 1950 if you ever listen to some of the present-day opinions of people on periods and the menstrual cycle.

This “period stigma” is holding women and girls back. The shame and disgust surrounding it sometimes would force women into hiding for those 3-7 days—away from work and school. It demotivates women and girls from learning and understanding more about their bodies as

if it isn’t a part of their sexual reproductive and health rights as human beings. These conversations are important and it should be a necessity for every gender and every age to learn more about periods. We ought to break these cycles of misinformation and misrepresentation. Some young girls are so scared of openly discussing their periods that they can’t even say the word “period.” They were taught to call it “the red car,” “that time of the month,” or anything that sugarcoats the

actual name of this naturally occurring phenomenon that has occurred from the dawn of time amongst women.

Apart from the stigmatisation of periods, women are also faced with “period poverty” and a lack of sufficient quality sanitary products. Women and girls in Guyana should have their menstruation without shame, discrimination, or fear.

I remembered in school, whenever I had my period and it was known, some children would stay away from me during those days. Or I was met with faces of disgust by both girls and boys whenever there was a period accident on my school uniform. I remembered the question, “can you

please check my back?” We girls always asked whenever we got up from sitting down because we were terrified of having any blood stains on our uniforms. It’s as if it’s an innate and biological fear that’s embedded into most of us about our periods, even before we even know what it is or what it looks like.

I hope that we can someday teach more about periods in schools as part of a comprehensive sexual education programme that is age-appropriate and gender-inclusive. I also hope that we can find ways and means to continuously educate all Guyanese on sexual education, specifically periods and the menstru-

al cycle. There are grown folk walking the streets of Guyana, raising children and grandchildren of their own—educating said children with misinformation that was passed down generations upon generations.

While schools can educate children at an appropriate age, their first set of socialisation and education occurs in the home. As such, it is important that parents are equipped with the right set of tools and information to help their children. Instead of demonising women and girls for having periods, we should promote and foster nurturing environments for them.

Oral health for diabetics

THERE are thousands of Guyanese who are living with diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you may know that the disease can cause problems with your eyes, nerves, kidneys and heart, as well as other parts of your body. Diabetes can lower your resistance to infection and can slow the healing process. The most common oral health problems associated with diabetes are tooth decay; periodontal (gum) disease; salivary gland dysfunction; fungal infections; lichen planus and lichenoid reactions (inflammatory skin disease); infection and delayed healing as well as taste impairment. =It’s essential to keep your medical records up to date. Let your dentist know if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, if the disease is under control, any other change in your medical history, and the names of all prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are taking.

When diabetes is not controlled properly, high glucose levels in saliva may help bacteria thrive. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning once a day between your teeth with floss or an interdental cleaner helps remove decay-causing plaque. Plaque that is not removed can eventually harden (calcify) into calculus or tartar. When tartar collects above the gum line, it becomes more difficult to brush and clean between teeth thoroughly. This can create conditions that lead to chronic inflammation and infection in the mouth. Because diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection, the gums are among the tissues likely to be affected.

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gum and bone that hold your teeth in place. Periodontal disease often is linked to the control of diabetes. For example, patients with inadequate blood-sugar control appear to develop periodontal disease more frequently and more severely, and they lose more teeth than do people who have good control of their diabetes. See your dentist immediately if you notice any of the following: gums that bleed easily; red, swollen or tender gums; gums that have pulled away from the teeth; pus between the teeth and gums when the gums are pressed; persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth; permanent teeth that are loose or separating; any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite; any change in the fit of partial dentures.

If you smoke, have high blood glucose levels or often are required to take antibiotics, you are more likely to have a problem with fungal infections in your mouth. Diminished salivary flow and increased salivary glucose levels create an attractive environment for fungal infections such as thrush. Thrush produces white (or sometimes red) patches in the mouth that may be sore or may become ulcers. It may attack the tongue, causing a painful, burning sensation. It also can cause difficulty in swallowing and compromise your ability to taste. Your dentist may prescribe antifungal medications to treat this condition. Good oral hygiene is critical.

Preventive oral health care, including professional cleanings at the dental office, is important if you are to control

the progression of periodontal disease and other oral health problems. Regular dental checkups and periodontal screenings are important for evaluating overall dental health and for treating dental problems in their initial stages. Your dentist may recommend more frequent evaluations and preventive procedures,such as prevention, to maintain good oral health.

In addition to brushing twice a day and flossing or using an interdental cleaner once a day, your dentist may suggest using an antimicrobial mouth rinse or toothpaste to control gingivitis. Watch for signs and symptoms of oral dis-

ease and contact the dental office immediately when a problem arises. Practice good oral hygiene at home; follow your physician’s instructions regarding diet and medications, and schedule regular dental checkups to maintain a healthy smile.
