How Guyana took

Christmas cheer to the children of South Africa

HERE was no Christmas cheer for the children of South Africa for decades during the period of Apartheid, when the minority white-ruled government of that wealthy country of gold and diamonds, oppressed the black majority of the population. It was the period when in South Africa, Santa Claus forgot all the little black boys and girls. It was during the decades of apartheid when blacks and whites were officially kept apart. While the white minority enjoyed the best that the country had to offer, enjoying the good life, the majority-black citizens of South Africa were treated less than second-class in their own country.

For example, there were “Whites Only” signs posted in many public places such as parks and washrooms.

Many countries around the world, Guyana included severed diplomatic and other relations with South Africa. The United Nations expelled it as a member. After a long and bloody struggle, Apartheid was dismantled in 1991 and democracy returned to that country.

They were not even permitted to vote in their country’s general elections. They had no representative in the country’s parliament.

Christmas, as the rest of the world knew it, was not experienced and enjoyed by the black Children of South Africa at that time. The fight to end Apartheid was also at a cultural level. After the ban on his books was lifted by the South African government, Guyanese author of “To Sir, With Love”, E.R Braithwaite applied for and was issued a special visitor’s visa as an “honorary white”. The highly respected international Guyanese author then paid a visit

During the most depressing years for the black South Africans, the white minority government, with all their military might - guns, tear-gas, bombs, fighter jets - which were available and used to keep the black citizens in subjection, Guyana was a friend and supporter of the oppressed masses. Like the adults, the black children of South Africa suffered during the years of Apartheid, when Christmas for them, was just another day in their miserable lives; when Santa Claus never visited them at Christmas time.

Guyana and many other countries were not silent or inactive about that horrible situation, especially when over 60 unarmed black children were gunned down by the white police during a peaceful demonstration in what became known internationally as “The Sharpeville Massacre”.

Like many countries around the world, Guyana became very involved with the struggle by the Black South Africans for their freedom and gave financial and other tactical support to the anti-Apartheid leaders and freedom fighters.

Some of the leaders were made “Honorary Guyanese” and

While there, he secretly interacted with the black South Africans, and from his findings he wrote the Book “Honorary White”, exposing many details about the sufferings of the black South Africans. Another high-profile Guyanese of international standing, Plaisance-born superstar Eddy Grant, composed the anti-apartheid song, “Johanna Gimme Hope”, which was a cry for the dismantling of the evil system of Apartheid. That song became very popular with fair-minded and peace-loving people all around the world and helped with the dismantling of Apartheid.

More recently, since the return of democracy to South Africa, Guyana established diplomatic relations with the democratically elected government of South Africa and appointed Dr. Kenrick Hunte as Ambassador. This year, the Ambassador and his wife Claire, along with members of staff of the Guyana Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, have already taken Christmas cheer to dozens of children in South Africa.

In more recent years, there has been a growing number of Guyanese who have been visiting countries in Africa, including South Africa. The Guyana Embassy there has noted that most of those Guyanese make organised visits to such areas of the country as Robin Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, also to the well-known town of Soweto, where they establish relationships with schools and other groups of children.

They would then send tangible assistance for the children.

The Embassy plays an important role in facilitating such humanitarian projects. Ambassador Hunte and his wife, who both have a background in education, have been very proactive giving assistance to the children of South Africa since their arrival - Christmas cheer inclusive.

And last weekend, at the Miss Universe Pageant held in the United States, a beautiful black young South African woman who grew up in a country in which decades before, little black girls never had a visit from Santa Claus, was crowned Miss Universe. She is Zozibini Tunzi, Miss South Africa 2019 and now Miss Universe 2019.

Many Guyanese are celebrating this achievement, which, had it not been for international support, especially from Guyana and Cuba, to crush the evil system of Apartheid, would never have happened.

South Africa, has now given the world a brilliant, beautiful and black Queen and the children of that once sad country from whence came the book, “Cry, the Beloved Country”, is now about to have Santa Claus bring them Christmas cheer again.

T

hough born in the French island of Martinique, artist and instructor Elodie CageSmith considers herself to be very much Guyanese, having lived, studied and worked in Guyana over the last 10 years. Elodie, who is also married to a Guyanese, absolutely loves Guyana. This love can be seen in various aspects of her work, where the country’s map, flag and bits of its culture along with aspects of Caribbean history are interwoven into her pieces that are currently on display at the National Art Gallery Castellani House. These pieces are part of her first solo exhibition ‘Portals amidst the deep’ which opened on December 5 and runs until January 11, 2020.

“How I see my art in general is very special. Portals allow you to travel and defy time and space and this is what I do when I paint.

My paintings allow me and allow those who view it to travel through time and through history, particularly Caribbean history,” Elodie told the Pepperpot Magazine.

A walk through the halls of Castellani House reveals a common theme of wealth and Afrocentrism, all of which are intermingled with deep shades of blue and rich gold tones to create an ethereal finished product.

Each piece is also uniquely textured using mixed media- a technique that Smith admitted she loved working with.

“Mixed media add vibrancy to the work and create a lot of contrast. Most

of my paintings have dark backgrounds and I am a lover of gold. I like my paintings to look like me; the way I aspire to be – they are gold, rich; they look wealthy so while talking

The artist stated that in a place where she speaks a language that is not her mother-tongue, art also serves as the perfect communication tool. “Art has allowed me to express myself. This is the best way I communicate with others.

When I paint, I am in my zone and I can be myself and express myself the best,” she said.

“It’s all about conversation and sharing ideas and having goals and putting a lot of research and purpose into creating art so we want to modernise things and especially give a voice to art in Guyana,” she said.

However, she noted that it is sometimes hard to judge creativity since everyone has their own perception of the world and expresses it accordingly. “This is why as an instructor it is always

a mistake sometimes what they call a mistake is the most beautiful part in the painting. So it’s about having ideas and having a goal but also allowing the piece to express itself,” she said.

About the exhibition Elodie is excited to be hosting her first solo exhibition. Previously, her work was shown at UG and the E.R. Burrowes School of Art alongside others but showing at the Castellani House is a real honour for her, she said. “The exhibition has seen a great response so far.

I feel like people have identified with the work. Guyana is part of the Caribbean and there is richness and wealth in the painting and a lot of history. I believe they identify with what is being shown here. Castellani is a beautiful place. I am happy to have people come and look at my pieces and experience what art is and we can have a conversation and learn from this,” she said.

For the new year, Elodie has much in store for her work but plans on revealing these later.

In the meantime, she encourages persons to visit Castellani house to get a first-hand experience of travelling through time, space and Caribbean History through her works of art.

R

OSIGNOL is a bustling village on the West Bank of the Berbice River. Back in the days, before the Berbice River Bridge was constructed, it used to be busier, because there was a port and the Rosignol Stelling, which was the main crossing point on the western bank of the Berbice River.

It is also a main stopping and exchange point for public transportation travelling along routes 50 and 53. The population comprises primarily people of mixed race and Indo and Afro Guyanese.

Rosignol was home to two cinemas, the Atma and the Ritz (the latter of which was burned down). The

cinemas were popular in their heyday and patrons came from many miles and towns away.

The attraction of the cinemas faded with the introduction of VCRs and later with DVDs. Also located in the village at one point was an adult entertainment house called Sweet Lips Disco and Restaurant; the disco is now defunct, leaving only the restaurant in business. On Saturdays, the village holds the biggest one-day market in the region. The huge Rosignol Fisheries is next to the stelling.

As of 2013, the town had improved a lot with many new businesses popping up on land that was once bushy and unused, and which has now been cleared for building purposes and agricultural use due to an increase in population. It has developed from a

quiet village to being quite busy.

The recently constructed Berbice bridge has taken some of the life and importance of the old stelling, but it still serves as a mode of transportation for people looking for another way to get across the river.

Rosignol has three schools, a nursery school, Rosignol Primary and Rosignol Secondary.

Meanwhile, following its increase in businesses, the Region Five Chamber of Industry and Commerce has been lobbying for Rosignol to be given township status.

THE NARCO HELL

TRUE TO PRINCIPLES OF WICKEDNESS IN HIGH PLACES

A

FORMER addict appealed to me after reading a previous piece that I did in this column.

He was irate that from his view, the government was not doing anything to terminate the drug blocks; that the drug blocks are still in place since 2015, and that people are even now renting real estate to open new drug blocks as if its real business. He not too long ago came out of rehab and is fired with the urgency for a justified crusade. It took some time and heated debate to access a reasonable balance in our conversation. I was patient and did my best to engage what was bent towards an active argument because I understand how he feels.

The grim reality is that if a drug block is closed down, the addicts will not be liberated. If the real estate that the block is on is retained legally, they will drift off to other locations, and if all the known locations are closed down, the addict will move to individuals. Few have witnessed a 3 am morning in the Bourda Market location and parameters, about drug-pushing. A drug pusher I have known well across decades, told me about phone orders and home-delivery services she has conducted and some impressive names came up. We-- me and my former addict colleague-had begun to reason on a more realistic and practical level. The worst epidemic now facing us, we concluded, are pills, ecstasy, “molly”, spice, and several other names for dangerous chemical cocaine-based concoctions offered to schoolchildren, in and out of our

townships, and the chemical ‘Frankenstein’ lab, synthetic marijuana.

I explained to him that even though I’m not rich and economic hopelessness is the strong argument presented for ‘Tekking a chance,’ I rejected the narco trade because of the realisation that most Guyanese are poor, barely making ends meet, with a bold and vain effort to maintain a public show. And drugs have caused untold suffering on families, torn siblings apart, broken up families and have caused too many murders, especially of elderly parental figures who were unable to finance drug habits. I know a handful of people who have turned away from running drug blocks because they couldn’t stand the degradation and loss of manhood and humanity imposed on addicts.

In a Charlotte Street drug yard, a school friend of mine was reduced to washing the underwear of the “Mistress of the Block” after he could no longer earn to feed his malevolent habit. The last time I saw him alive he was crunched on the North Road and Camp Street bridge where the Mr Mod shop used to be, shivering on a relatively hot day. His last words to me repeated a question that ‘Chase,’ a former policeman cast down to the level of addict, who with others washed cars and motorbikes in front of the then Silvie’s Store on Hadfield and High Streets back in the early 90s; and I have no idea what happened to him except the memory of the question, “ Yuh ent know anybody that could do anything fuh we/me?”

The only sensible and workable approach is to remove the current popula-

tion of addicts to a colony outside of any township environment, where an existing project is activated. I’m talking about the physical work of road development, aircraft runaway or construction of camp administration buildings. By now we should have the substance abuse formula to manage the withdrawals. I have witnessed

that physical involvement tasks that result in earning, that contribute to an open mind for esteem engagement, possibly towards a direction of challenge and purpose. Drug addiction is a complex condition driven by hopelessness and humbling situations, where a metamorphosis into the reality of present circumstances as a

result of accepting previous actions is rejected.

I spoke to addicts, who concoct blame scenarios that are incredible but logical fictions. Even those you have known from childhood rely on some external alter ego experience to explain why they engaged in drugs. My concern is that people lie all the time, some, however, do

accept self-blame, but seem to lack the mental resolve to process redemption. I knew people who have lied so much that they begin to believe the fictions as true, completely in defiance of the public who knows the truth.

One such character is a politician who has time and time again failed to be loyal to his own utterances, yet proceeds anyhow.

I cannot understand with all the evidence of the devastation of mind-altering drugs, one would venture into a foul-smelling place of sprawling human decadence to become a part of it? I have read of no clear answer by any professional that explains the phenomenon in this area of self-inflicted misery, especially with adults. With the young, peer and personality pressures can envelop, as it does with sexual, criminal and defiance of one’s better judgement into a miserable memory later, of a regrettable submission, but not at the time.

That there are humans incapable of empathy, who will use office to empower themselves at the expense of others, masquerade well in any momentary guise you expect of them, they do exist. The medical world calls them psychopaths; they are wired differently, soulless, not driven by a life evolved in the “crab barrel.” They never knew hunger, yet they crave ‘presence’ ‘wealth’ ‘power’ and homage if the drug world is a means to that end. Then its misery, casualties and poisonous social impact are insignificant, to be trivialised, as a means to an insincere end, the definition of human evil in high places.

Developing islands and Climate Change

I

N 2017, I met a girl from Dominica, alongside a host of other Caribbean youth like myself, during a leadership exchange programme. She and I spent less than a month together in a foreign land, but during that time we became very close friends. At the end of August, when the exchange aspect of the programme ended, she and I went back to our respective countries, hoping that we would see each other again.

I found solace in another friend, in the Bahamas, who was also on our exchange programme. Each day, several times a day, we would check in with each other to compare what we read or heard. Days passed, anxiety levels raised and soon enough it was the weekend.

I remember this specific Saturday so vividly. I had just gotten to the venue for my Integrated Mathematics

mechanisms in place, communication became better and I heard all about the devastation there from her. But she and her family members were okay, and I was grateful for that.

A few days ago, I read a World Economic Forum report on some research done

by Oxfam (which is a confederation of 19 independent charitable organisations focusing on the alleviation of global poverty). The research highlighted the magnitude of the displacement being

Guyana was out of the hurricane’s path, but Dominica was on alert. I held my breath, up until the threat had passed and Dominica was intact. But then, Hurricane Maria came soon after, and Dominica was hit. I remember feeling my heart in my throat. I remember being at school, frantic but immensely helpless. The power on the island went out, their communication networks were down. Imaginably, I had no idea what was happening.

I remember refreshing my newsfeeds everywhere, all day; I was religiously following #HurricaneMaria and #Dominica on Twitter. I even took to Facebook to message

lessons, and I decided to message her some more just so she would know that I had her in my thoughts and prayers all the time. When I got into the chat, I saw double ticks; the messages were delivered! And, I was suddenly filled with hope that she was okay. I hadn’t received a reply, but I sent a few dozen more messages.

They were being delivered.

Not able to control myself, and without a single care for math lessons, I reached out to the Bahamian friend right away to share the news. He saw the same thing, and at that moment we breathed easily after days. Later that day, I got a single message: “Sissy I am ok”.

Subsequently, as the island began receiving help and putting certain key

What was simply incredulous about this research, however, was that it illustrated that people living in poorer, developing nations are exponentially more susceptible to some of the dire effects of climate change, despite contributing to its occurrence exponentially less.

The report highlighted: “With small island states like Cuba and Dominica among the worst affected areas, people there are 150 times more likely to be homeless

than people in Europe, despite producing a third of the emissions per capita as wealthy countries.”

I immediately thought about my Dominican sister, and how she was forced to live away from her family, in another country, for a few months, because of the devastation caused by the Hurricane. In it a given that us small states here in the Caribbean do not contribute as many emissions, and I cannot get angry when I attend Cli-

mate Change discussion fora and I hear people question why we should be taking action to mitigate against this. Those sentiments are not unjustified, but I can only reaffirm that it is still in our best interest to adopt more environmentally-friendly practices.

This is why I support our government’s ban on styrofoam and the proposed ban on single-use plastics. This is why every time I hear our President

talk about his Green State vision, I am filled with pride, but also simultaneously wary, that our oil and gas revenues do indeed bring this vision to fruition instead of being otherwise used. And, when I think about being more conscious in my environmental decisions (you know, like using fewer plastics, limiting my consumption of meat, and so), it seems less taxing, and more of a responsibility.

CARNEGIE LAUNCHES PROFESSIONAL COURSE FOR CARE OF THE ELDERLY

A REVOLUTIONARY OFFERING

U

NTIL two generations ago, the issue of caring for the aged and infirm never loomed very large in Guyana. The Guyanese society was even more rural than today and the extended family still survived and the villages were closely knit forming, in effect, a familial community. In this milieu, the old and infirm had secure places where they were respected and cared for. The aged were regarded as purveyors of knowledge and their advice was often sought in conflictual situations.

In the last 40 or 50 years, the Guyanese society rapidly became urbanised and the ethos of the extended family faded away and village life became looser and more influenced by the city. In the new dispensation, the elderly lost their special place and some went with their children or other relatives to the city while others were left in the villages to struggle for exis-

tence. Further, in the last two generations, the Guyanese society experienced one of the highest emigration rates in the world and older relatives were often left to fend for themselves despite the receipt of gifts sporadically received.

The Guyanese Society had now become conscious of the aged as a special group as had long been the case in the urbanised developed world and, in a determinist way, there grew up prejudices against the aged. In the workplace, for example, without evidence, it was assumed that older persons were not innovative and were resistant to change and that they eschewed knowledge of IT; in other words, older workers were less efficient than younger ones. The facts, however, in most workplaces, belie these prejudices.

Older people tend to be segregated or ignored. For instance, many minibuses do not pick up or even allow older commuters to enter their buses at the bus parks.

And in cueing up for service at public offices such as the post offices, there are always younger and aggressive persons who would be unfairly jostling their way in front of the aged.

In contrast to the attitudes described above, there is a growing number in Guyanese Society who recognise that the elderly are the custodians of the culture and traditions of the country and are the ones who will hand on valuable experience and guidance in the workplace and may still be able to contribute honest public service. In the banks and some public offices, there have been attempts to provide for the accommodation and comfort of the Old or “senior citizens”, and though they are not perfect as yet, it is a laudable start. And in the streets and public places, there are always one or two persons who would physically assist the aged and infirm. We will attribute the growth of these humane attitudes towards the Old to a manifestation of the

Guyanese ethos. However, Guyana has to make more effort to near the conditions of many developed countries in taking care of the elderly.

In Guyana, governments and society as a whole are becoming aware of their responsibilities to the elderly.

This is evident in improvements in medical care, educational facilities such as giving free IT training to the aged, increase in old-age pensions and so on. The founding of homes for the aged by private persons or institutions had started some years ago and they provide conditions of very high quality of comfort.

Older relatives who could not be taken care of could be housed in such homes. (Such homes should be differentiated from purely charitable institutions such as the Dharam Shala or the Palms.} So far, caregivers for the elderly have been amateurs.

Now for the first time in Guyana’s educational history, professional training in care for the elderly is be-

ing offered by the Carnegie School of Home Economics.

The course was launched last month and Vice-Principal Sharmaine Marshall very aptly remarked: “ I believe this course will change the way care of the elderly is done in Guyana . . . I think what we will teach here is revolutionary, it is trending and it is up to world standard.”

The curriculum is comprehensive and a graduate from the course could practise abroad. Students learn whatever is necessary for caring for the elderly. They would learn of the Psychology of the Old, medical knowledge relevant to the Old such as testing blood pressure or inserting drips, cooking and dietary cooking, the creation of attractive rooms, bed baths and so on. The Diploma course lasts for two years and includes practical training at the Georgetown Public Hospital and the Palms. A three-month part-time course is also offered and this seems to be of the nature of a ‘crash

course’ and this could accommodate family members who are tending their older relatives. Students who have been participating in the 3-month course have been high in their praise of the new world of learning and experience which had been opened to them.

The graduates of these courses could serve in the already established Homes for the Elderly, and hopefully in others to be established by the State; in the Tourist Industry; and having family caregivers rendering their help effectively and professionally.

The course had commenced with 14 students in the Part-time three-month course and eight in the two-year Diploma course and it is quite likely that the number of participants would keep increasing. At the launch of the course, there was only one male; it is hoped that more males would be participating in the years to come.

Dangerous toothaches

arely will a death certificate indicate that a toothache was the cause of death. The blame is usually placed on the effects of a secondary infection somewhere else in the body. Now, a twelve-year-old, let me call him Tommy, as it is obviously unethical to publish the real name of private patients, ignored the pain in one of his teeth. His mother had five children to support and at the time was unemployed. So, visiting a private dentist would have to wait. Before long, the toothache was no longer noticeable. The pain seemed to have migrated into his head. The resulting headache became so unbearable that Tommy’s mother took him into the emergency room at the Public Hospital.

In most cases, dental problems such as cavities or toothaches are viewed as trivial. Many persons do not consider these as ”a big deal.” This is so although there may be pain.

A visit to the dentist can quickly bring relief.

Tommy’s headache was caused by a brain abscess – a bacterial infection in the bran. The infection had come from the infected tooth he had complained about previously. The tooth became abscessed and the bacteria spread, causing a secondary infection in the child’s brain. Some species of Streptococcus bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease tend to accumulate in nerve tissue. From an infected

tooth, they can migrate up through the nerves and into the brain or spinal column, where they can cause a secondary infection. This is what happened to Tommy.

Tommy underwent two surgeries and the removal of the infected tooth. For several weeks afterwards, he seemed to be on the mend, working with a physiotherapist to regain full use of his right arm and leg, which the brain infection and surgeries had impaired. But despite thoroughly disinfecting the tooth socket and taking antibiotics, some of the infection remained and continued to spread. Within a few weeks the infection inside Tommy’s brain returned, and this time with a vengeance. Again, he was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late. Tommy died before doctors should help. The cause of his death was attributed to a brain abscess, but the real culprit was an infected tooth.

In another case of which I am aware of a 57-year-old man was admitted to a hospital complaining of a toothache accompanied by a fever and swelling in his right cheek and neck. The man was a diabetic and suffered from liver cirrhosis due to excessive alcohol consumption. His immune system was obviously overworked dealing with the consequences of poor lifestyle choices. His symptoms worsened despite antibiotic therapy. Infection from the tooth eventually spread to his lungs (pneumonia), kidneys and liver.

After 35 days in the hospital, the patient died of multi-organ failure. Antibiotics were useless. The infection in his mouth continued to feed the systemic infections until it killed him.

Although weakened by other health problems, his death, like that of Tommy’s, was literally caused by an infected tooth.

Relatively young and otherwise healthy individuals are affected as well as those who are older and in poor health.

A 19-year-old woman with no serious health problems had an infected tooth extracted. Soon after, she developed chest pain. Even though she was treated with antibiotics before and after the dental procedure, bacteria from the infected tooth spread to her heart. Thirteen days after the tooth extraction, she died of a heart attack brought on by the infection.

While deaths due to tooth infections are uncommon, they do happen more often than we suspect. In most cases, they go unreported or unrecognised, with the secondary infection getting all the blame. In most cases, the patients suffered from poor nutrition, low immunity ( especially HIV infection), or had other health conditions which exacerbated the situation. If a tooth infection can cause death, it can certainly cause other health problems.

Even people who can eat well and take care of their health can be and are affected by the health of their teeth.

‘Tis the season to upcycle A

S artists, adding value to raw material is one of the things that we do. When we transform raw material into a masterpiece, it gives that object a higher value.

One of the greatest things about being an artist is that one can never run out of materials to create. Christmas presents an opportunity to turn trash into treasure. This process is called upcycling.

Upcycling is the process of recycling something in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item. It’s simple, fun and inexpensive.

Create simple toys, cards and

decorations, using materials you would usually discard from your home. As a child, I made Christmas cards for my family using cardboards and sAcrap materials I had gathered during our cleaning and decorating process. It brought me great joy and satisfaction to give handmade gifts. Last year, I made a Superhero Mansion for my godson using discarded materials. It had three gaming compartments, namely football, basketball and car racing.

Not surprisingly, he loved it.

It doesn’t take a lot to impress young children. Simple gifts may help to expand their imagination.

During this season, encourage your children to make gifts. Some of them would have learnt a lot of new craft ideas during the July-August vacation. Have them utilise those skills now. It’s a great idea because unlike a storebought item, they can make the

toy, play with it, destroy it and remake it. In the end, there will be less complaining over a broken toy. Upcycled toys can take the form of animals such as a monkey, crocodile, dog, etc.

You can also create ornaments using popsicle sticks and plastic containers. There are endless possibilities.

You also develop craft repair skills that will, in turn, save you money. Upcycling is also your contribution to a more sustainable environment. One social benefit is the support it lends to the creative industry. Upcycling celebrates the craftsmanship of individuals who choose to work with their hands.

Environmentally, upcycling conserves the environment by reducing the number of waste products dumped in landfills and elsewhere.

however, have the staying power and are still conducting their businesses as per normal.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Drupattie (only name given) has a food business nearest to the stelling and said she is trying to stay afloat.

The businesswoman added that her small business is still operational because she has the support of the fishermen, school children, bus and car drivers.

“We weren’t here when the stelling was functioning, we came after and we are trying to keep our doors open; we took over the business the same

“I am a boat owner and I have people working my fishing boat and right now with the weather is very windy and not a good time for fishing and fishermen endure a lot to make a living, because being out there in the Atlantic Ocean is no ‘walk in the park’ and there is always the fear of piracy,” he said.

At this time, he added

that most boats are out fishing; with the approaching Christmas holidays everybody trying to accumulate cash to brighten the lives of their loved ones.

Inshan stated that the fishing business is very risky and it is not guaranteed they will get a good catch, but not everyone is cut out to work in offices so there we have fishermen, who risk their lives to make an honest living.

He added that the coop, however, provides support to fisher folk in whatever way they can and their boats are secured by guards when they come in from the sea and during the time they spend at home.

T Murphy’s Dam, Rosignol, West Bank Demerara, the Pepperpot Magazine met Puran Persaud, an overseas-based Guyanese who was happy to be home for the holidays.

He explained that although he is Guyanese he works in Barbados in the construction industry; his father passed away recently, and he had to return home to pay his respects, among other things.

“My dad died recently and gave me this place, so I am here to spend a few days to clean up; I live further down the road, and this will always be home,” he said.

Persaud related that Rosignol is home for him and he’s always nostalgic when he’s there, because the people live in peace and there is nothing like racism and discrimination there.

“Most people here depend heavily on the nearby Blairmont Estate, fishing, and small-scale, cash- crop farming for their livelihoods and it is a nice place to reside for a family life of serenity,” he said.

However, Persaud is very concerned about the welfare of the youths in the village, who wander and lime aimlessly at nights because of unemployment; he believes it is time they become gainfully employed, since they don’t want to work on the sugar estate, fish or farm.

The Pepperpot Magazine also spoke to several business operators, and Mark Singh was among them; he manages a

He reported that he has one person in his employ since the business cannot be managed alone; he has a wide range of ladies and gents clothing, shoes, watches, bags, suitcases and many other things, at very reasonable prices.

Singh said the business was handed down to him four years ago and he is trying to attract customers with his prices and quality merchandise.

“This business is a family tradition, been around for many years and it will remain as such because it is successful as you can see,” he said.

Singh, like others, does not reside at his businessplace; a few doors away is his residence which is comfortably within walking distance and he thinks Rosignol is the place to earn a living.

The Pepperpot Magazine also encountered a young man in the Rosignol Market area, Alex Reis, who was assisting a friend to sell some cotton bed sheets.

He stated that he is from Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice and was trying to sell some stuff in a barrel he received from overseas.

“We just trying to ‘catch we hand’ for the Christmas, that’s why we here trying to sell off these sheets, which are of good quality,” he said.

Another large store owner, Rofeena, said business has been fair and a week or two before Christmas sales are expected to increase, because it is in our blood to make last-minute shopping and utilise deals and bargains.

She has three employees in her store which has in stock a variety of clothing for both men and women, children, household items, electrical articles, shoes, cosmetics, perfumes, brand name watches and other high-end items at unbeatable prices.

The Rosignol resident disclosed that the area is virtually crime-free and certain things they do not have to worry about; because of the many businesses competing with each other, they have to regulate prices to meet the people’s needs, so there is

“Life here is good, quiet; we don’t get any crimes or anything. I try to sell every little thing and business picking up with the season upon us, but people are shopping,” she said.

Mohamed told the Pepperpot Magazine that people would come from as far as Corentyne, New Amsterdam, Georgetown and other outlying areas to do their shopping at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, because of the pocket-friendly prices and good-quality products.

IZAM Ali is a fruit and ground provisions vendor who has been in the business for the past 50 years.

Ali told the Pepperpot Magazine that he started to sell in the city and moved up to West Coast Berbice when his father passed away 22 years ago; he remained in the community where he is earning.

He now resides at Number Two Village, West Coast Berbice, where he has a kitchen garden of greens which he sometimes sells at his stand at Rosignol Line Market. Ali explained that the market is located about two miles from his home and it is easy for him to make the journey.

Ramps Logistics spreading Christmas cheer

THINK the Christmas season is a time when people love, care, share, laugh, smile and more; not forgetting to eat more too. Last year I dropped into Ramps Logistics Christmas party for kids from the various orphanages and the staff kids. I was very impressed and decided to join them again this year,because I wanted to observe the consistency. This year it was held in the National Park and the kids had a blast in the play area with the bouncy castle and trampoline.

One of the things I admired about this party is, the kids from the orphanages were not separated from the Ramps staff kids. The various food stations including Royal Castle, cups cakes, hot dogs, snow cones etc., were constantly busy with super excited kids. The craft booth sponsored

by GTT had the curious, creative minds designing their own concepts and others painting their faces. The kids felt special going up to Santa Claus and receiving gifts with their names on it. I heard some familiar voices from among the crowd of kids and I recognised some of them from the orphanages that usually visit my home at Christmas and other tims of the year. “When are you coming to take me to your house? “ That is what little Jenny asked when she ran to me with a big hug which was priceless. I told her soon and she knows I will.

Those children have added so much joy to my life over the years. Thirty kids are the most I have had come to my house at once from two orphanages. We celebrated my birthday this year watching Dennis the Menace while having cake and ice cream. But back to the proceedings at the park: the photo booth at the National Park was buzzing chatter, laughter and screams. The instant photo booth had a long queue because in minutes they were viewing each other’s

This was one feature that was included this year.

I walked around absorbing the festive environment and commending some of the Ramps staff on another awesome event. They hosted a fantastic event at Palm Court for their clients and staff recently and I had a blast. The synergistic effect the Ramps team displayed at these events was evident that one team, one dream is part of their mission. During the summer they sponsored a cricket camp for a few weeks for underprivileged kids. They have supported many events including the Women in Business Expo and the Living with Intention Tour.

I admire and respect companies who understand corporate social responsibility. Special holiday blessings to the management and staff of Ramp Logistics and the other sister companies. I also need to mention Tower Suites who reached out to us to contribute to The Model Image –Fashioning the Future You. They hosted the dinner for the kids to demonstrate their etiquette skills. Le Treats Bakery is a small business that produces some of the best bread, cakes and pastries in town and also has a habit of showing gratitude. We were raising funds for the Living with Intention tour and requested an item for the tea party and they offered to do three.

They said after the Women in Business Expo the business increased and they were happy to contribute. We requested a donation of juices for the same event and it was unbelievable what they sent. I did not use them because I could not add their name to the list of people who contributed and I subsequently sent them a message mentioning that.

Many expressed how embarrassing and insulting it is when seeking sponsorship from some businesses. Many times you hear a long list of names mentioned at events and think the event was well supported, but I can tell you the contributions are minimal many times. I must commend Mortimer Stewart for making the effort for Banks DIH to support many projects. I also want to thank the Pegasus Hotel, Starr Party Rentals, Impressions, Ming’s Products and Services and Metro Office Supplies for their contributions to their support to various communities. So many companies benefit from communities and find it difficult to contribute, which is unacceptable. A big thank you to all the companies big and small who are contributing to humanity and continue to give because it benefits the world in which we all live.

N Boxing Day 1966, John Francisco De Freitas, in an apparent drunken condition strolled into the “Pinky Galaxy” city night spot in Regent Street, where he shot Cleo Samuels, three times.

Samuels later died in hospital.

De Freitas, identified as the killer was later charged with murder. At his trial he led an alibi defence – alleging that he was somewhere else at the time of the crime.

But the jury rejected his story and convicted him of the lesser count of manslaughter.

Dissatisfied with the jury’s verdict, the accused, represented by Mr. J. O. F. Haynes, Q.C. , appealed, but the Appellate Court headed by Chancellor Edward Luckhoo and included Justice of Appeal Guya Persaud and Victor Crane, dismissed the appeal and affirmed the jury’s verdict of manslaughter.

The Appellate Court had agreed with the trial judge, telling the jury that there was no provocation in the case to warrant manslaughter, but after taking the other circumstances in which the accused, in spite of his alibi defence, was properly identified and that there was only a scintilla of evidence in relation to drunkenness, dismissed the appeal and affirmed

the jury’s verdict.

The main judgment was delivered by Justice of Appeal Crane.

According to him, at about 8 p.m. on the evening of December 26, 1966, at the “Pinky Galaxy”, a city night spot in Regent Street, Cleo Samuels was wounded several times. He was shot at point blank range by a gunman with whom he had an altercation. Samuels was rushed to the Public Hospital where an emergency operation was performed, but he succumbed from bullet wounds on December 30, 1966.

The accused John Francisco De Freitas, was later identified as the assailant, and his apprehension some three months following the incident led to his being charged with Samuels’ murder.

The principal witnesses for the prosecution were three female employees of the “Pinky Galaxy” – Theresa Balkarran, Sylvia Austin and Doreen Persaud.

They were present at the incident and, at the trial, gave eyewitness accounts of it. Each identified the accused as the person who was engaged in a quarrel with the deceased and who discharged a loaded revolver at, and a few feet away from him.

Through them, it was established that the accused was a frequent visitor to the “Pinky Galaxy”,

where he was in the habit of resorting for entertainment; that on the evening of the fatality he visited the hotel, danced once with Sylvia Austin and slapped her on the face when she refused his request for a repeat dance.

This was the beginning of the trouble, for when Doreen Persaud interceded on Austin’s behalf, she too was slapped.

This incident brought about the intervention of the deceased, Cleo Samuels, and the altercation between him and the accused.

The three women also related how both the deceased and the accused were ordered out of the hotel by the caretaker, how the deceased returned some minutes later followed by the accused who pulled a revolver from his waist and shot the deceased at least three times at very close range.

At his trial, the accused raised an alibi supported by one witness, viz., that at the time when the offence was alleged to have been committed he was at his father’s home, where he passed the entire night, and that his identification by Doreen Persaud at a parade was a case of

mistaken identity.

The jury, however, rejected both the alibi and his claim to have been mistakenly identified when they convicted him of the lesser offence of manslaughter.

Continuing, Justice Crane said that foremost among the amended grounds of appeal, is a complaint that the trial judge

failed to direct the jury adequately on the effect of drunkenness on the question of mens rea in relation to manslaughter. It is contended that the jury ought to have been directed that the offence of manslaughter involved some mens rea, that drunkenness could negative it and thus be a complete defence thereto, and that if they were in any doubt about what ever the degree of drunkenness exhibited by the accused in fact negatived his mens rea , they ought to have been told to acquit him altogether of the charge.

According to Judge

Crane, the law remains that a condition of drunkenness at the time of the commission of the offence which causes death may only reduce the crime, if it reduces it at all, from murder to manslaughter.

This is still good law today just as it was restated in 1920; there is therefore no room for a verdict of total acquittal from a capital charge when death is occasioned by the influence of alcoholic excess.

The contrary was, however, the suggestion of the learned counsel who argued for the application of the principle in Church’s case (8); but a verdict of manslaughter arising from the inability of an accused to form the specific intent to constitute murder, stands on a different footing from any other verdict of the like kind and a specific direction on mens rea (guilty knowledge), as suggested, is unnecessary to sustain the verdict.

Contrary to the counsel’s suggestion the accused indeed lost no chance of an acquittal by the absence of the direc-

tion because there can be no complete acquittal, the Appellate Court said.

Justice Crane noted that the only other ground of appeal which it is thought worthy of consideration deals with the complaints on the question of the identification of the accused.

The complaint is made that the judge failed to give a full and sufficient direction on the point as to whether the identity of the accused as the assailant had been properly established.

It will be recalled that the accused was not arrested until the expiration of three months from the date of the incident. He was arrested by Reginald Rogers, the proprietor of the “Pinky Galaxy” at the Atkinson Field motor race circuit where he attended a meeting , and was given in charge of a police constable as the “gentleman wanted by the police to assist in the investigation of a murder which was committed at my premises on December 26, 1966.”

Evidence of the identity of the accused, in which the prosecution was no doubt saying, was provided by the three female employees, the justice of Appeal observed as he dismissed the appeal and affirmed the jury’s conviction of manslaughter .

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is often stigmatised, playing second fiddle to its counterpart, traditional academia. The Council, on the contrary, uses industry cues to design a curriculum to produce professionals who can fill the specific gaps within that industry.

Assistant TVET Officer in the Assessment and Certification unit, Mr. Mark Roberts explains: “We really encourage a relationship with the institution. We encourage the institutions to have a relationship with industries. This whole system of Technical and Vocational Education and Training is really industry-driven. It is fed by labour marketing information. The training that goes in [within our institutions] is a [direct] consequence of what labour market provides. So, if industry demands that there is a need for more skilled welders or mechanics that is what is done at the institutions.”

At the end of every course, participants receive certification that makes them competitive both in and out of Guyana.

“The CVQ [which] is the Caribbean Vocational Qualification is given by the training organisations across the Caribbean. Various Ministers of Education have agreed [on] one certification process.

Coming out of the Caribbean Single Market Economy, we have the Caribbean Vocation Qualification… Individuals who have completed a training programme in any of the institutions that have been registered with the Council will be issued with a CVQ,” he said.

The CVQ is recognised across the Region and internationally, in countries like Australia and Canada. The Council does regular industry

surveys to ensure the graduates are 100 per cent relevant in the work place.

Mr. Seon Hamer, Monitor Inspector in the Standards and Curriculum Unit explains: “The Council and its partners have conducted, in the past, a labour market intelligence survey. That intelligence survey is expected to capture the kind of information that [allows us] to do forecasting so that we are not in the business

of training persons in areas where the need does not exist for them to be absorbed in the industry.”

The combination of theory in the classroom and practical experience in the work place, Mr. Hamer explained, is attractive to trainees and often, they return to the Centre to pursue higher levels of certification.

“The competency-based modularised approach to

teaching and learning allows for the students to be engaged in [the] industry within the first three months while they are [enrolled] at the institution. That would allow the students to have hands-on [training] as to what obtains within the industry and act as a form of motivation. When they return to the institution, they’re eager to complete their training so that they can get back into the world of work,” he said.

Mr. Hamer added that while the obvious choice of training currently may be in the fields related to oil and gas, students should pursue their ‘dream’ careers as Guyana’s overall economic growth will create diverse opportunities in all sectors.

“The oil and gas industry is new to Guyana. As a result, many of the skillsets that are required might not be readily available here in Guyana. [Young people] should not feel as

though they cannot be a part of what is happening.

The truth is with all of the expansion and the development that is expected, once first oil gets here, a number of other areas will pop-up in terms of creating opportunities for employment. Whatever your dream is, whatever your goal is, whatever you have that passion [for] just follow your dreams. Whether it is to be a plumber, to be a carpenter, to be an engineer, accountant, lawyer, just follow your dream and ensure that you do your best. As the industry evolves, there will be an opportunity for all of us,” he said.

“A lot of people look at the programmes and think [that] they are for people who are not really academically gifted, or they are drop-outs, or they are delinquents, but these courses are very challenging. They are very, very challenging and I was surprised… My main reason for doing the course is I have a creative part of me that I like to channel. To be very honest, I like nice things that I can’t always afford. So, my idea going in was that if I can’t afford it, if I can’t buy it, I’m going to build it and that’s basically what I’ve been doing. Technical Vocational Education and Training empowers you that way. It empowers you to be able to create what you want. It promotes self-sufficiency and that’s all about what I’m for,” she said.

The programmes offered

by TVET institutions are credible and certified. Not only can the programmes give you direct access to the industries of your choice, but both the CLBD and CTVET continue to modify their programme lists to benefit all participants.

The CLBD is extending and diversifying their seminar offerings for more well-rounded learning experiences while CTVET has already laid the groundwork for career guidance and programmes, inclusive of the prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR).

Guyana’s economy is growing rapidly and these are two avenues which can be utilised to access education, training and certification in order to benefit from opportunities in the petroleum.

ANET Adeba Ali grew up in a family of lawyers and always had their support along her academic journey. At times, though, it was tough to consider the fact that many of her family members were successful and were looking upon her to be the same.

But instead of viewing this as a problem and giving up, she allowed their expectations to motivate her to work harder and achieve her goals. In fact, at just 23 years old, Janet was admitted to the Guyana Bar Association a few months ago.

Born to Abdul Ali and Sunita Durgah (Headmistress of St. Margaret’s Primary School), Janet attended Happy Hearts Nursery, Redeemer Primary and Queens College. She made her way to the University of Guyana (UG) where she did a year of Sociology to be accepted into the law programme. It wasn’t easy to get in. Janet had to ensure she received a distinction

for the first-year programme.

She did and subsequently received her LLB after doing the law programme for three years.

The pressure continued building up because completing the law programme at UG did not guarantee her a space at Hugh Wooding Law School. Only the 25 students who performed the best would be given acceptance. Being the bright, diligent student she was, Janet earned her space at the prestigious law school and obtained her Legal Education Certificate (LEC) after attending for two years.

On her birthday, last October, Janet proudly stood with her caring family and friends at the High Court as she was admitted to the bar.

“That has been my life plan since I was a little girl,” she expressed during an interview with the Pepperpot Magazine recently, and she also reflected on the fact that several members of her family are lawyers, including her grandfather, aunts, and uncle.

my ability since as a child and they guided me and supported me throughout the years.

My father was my pillar of strength. He closed his business when I was born just to give me the attention I needed. He would sit with me and ensure I studied each day. He would go through all of my books, and whenever I performed well, he would give me rewards,” she recalled, adding, “He would take me to school, pick me up, and today I am really thankful to him for that. Even when I was writing exams, I remember him coming at the school and giving me Milky Way, juice… he was always there for me.”

Her mom, too, was a pillar of strength to her.

“She was actually a teacher at the school, so she would know what areas I needed to focus on, and the past test papers that I could use. Since I was little, my family started planning for me. They saved from since I was a child to make sure I would achieve my goal of becoming a lawyer.”

Today, Janet said

she is very humbled by her achievements. Notwithstanding some serious challenges that came her way in the process, she was able to move past them. she plans to work for a few years in the public system before branching off into private practice.

Janet says studying law requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice. “When I started law, I was very academically inclined, but my grades dropped. I actually failed one of my favourite courses in the first year, and at that point, I felt like my world was shattered. I realised in life there will always be down moments, times when you feel like giving up. But if you persevere and keep at it, it will be worth it in the end.

The sun always comes up the next day so you shouldn’t give up.”

Janet advises setting goals and working at them no matter what comes up. “Always have a plan, don’t overthink things, get enough rest, eat a well-balanced diet, and do things at your own pace.”

'Your disability makes you no different from anyone else’ ▬ Says visually impaired UG graduate

AV I N G t o g o through school with an extremely low vision by no means placed a damper on the confidence and determination that Asif Khan approached his life with. Having recently graduated from the University of Guyana (UG), he couldn’t be happier that he continued to press on despite his many challenges.

The 23-year-old who hails from Bartica was born with

an eye condition that rendered him unable to control the focus of his eyes, and as he grew older, he acquired a second condition that resulted in lots of cloudiness.

Asif can regain a substantial amount of his vision if he would do a cornea transplant.

“I’m not sure when I would be able to do the operation due to cost; that’s the main factor.

From my research, it costs about $1.2M to do one eye, leaving out other costs like travelling and accommodation,” Asif explained during an

interview with the Pepperpot Magazine recently.

While Asif has never been able to see normally, he could have made out large prints when he was in primary and secondary school. But as he approached age 18, things got worse for him.

He attended Bartica Nursery School, but when it was time for primary school, his relatives moved him to the city in hopes that he might receive a better education. He started at St. Agnes Primary, then moved his way up to St. Roses High and sixth form subsequently.

He then began attended UG for four years and studied international relations.

Life was not very easy for

Asif. Two years into UG, he started working as a teacher with visually impaired students. Balancing work and school took a toll on him at times, along with other challenges that came along such as travelling by public transportation.

He also saw that there were major problems early in the 2000s with the country’s education system and its lack of adequate provisions for those in the disability community.

“UG started to receive an influx of visually impaired students and didn’t have many facilities in place to accommodate us. They didn’t have a policy that deals with disability, visual “You basically had

This edition of Government in Action identifies some credible avenues available to help build capacity, boost businesses, and even capitalise on opportunities in the petroleum sector.

The Centre offers training, mentoring, and networking opportunities for Guyanese businesses. It helps to prepare the business community for partnerships with the international companies with basis in Guyana, potential investors and those tangential to the petroleum sector. Then we have business courses which really help to streamline the capacity building of the local Guyanese businesses. We have these in financial management, supply chain management, as well as human resource management… and these are all offered free of charge to the local Guyanese businesses.

Dr. Gaskin-Peters leads the seminars, which usually last about three hours, and teaches the basics, key terms, project life cycles, and business opportunities within the sector. The Deputy Country Director explained that while businesses come to the Centre with a desire to break into the petroleum sector, business growth does not only benefit

oil and gas. Rather, those businesses strengthen Guyana’s economy and increase its sustainability.

“Over the last two years… we [have had] over 600 vendors working in the industry.

This is part of the hard work that we have put in [to] doing gap assessments of the busi-

ties,” she said.

Guyanese businesses, she added, are more than willing to put in the work to build their capacity. Their hard work is already paying off.

“We have seen tremendous growth in the Guyanese businesses. While we’ve put in the effort, the local busi-

‘Dear brown girls, your dreams are valid’

“DEAR brown girls, your dreams are valid” is a phrase I saw on one of the posts Miss Universe 2019 made on her Facebook page. I can surely say that phrase, no matter how short it is, inspired me to write this piece. Pageants have always been seen as a competition of beauty and while some pageants argue beauty and brains, the fact that the word beauty is still in the phrase should still speak volumes. Representation matters. That is something I can personally tell you all. Seeing someone, who looks like you, talks like you and who shares similar values and beliefs; filling great shoes and positions inspires you to become greatness of your own will. That is something Miss Universe 2019, from the beautiful country of South Africa; Zozibini Tunzi proved that we are on the edge of finally breaking barriers and the impossible.

For far too long the standardised idea of beauty has been limited and narrow: long hair, fair skin, slender figure and a slim nose. Well, am I wrong? Colour has limited opportunities and gateways for centuries and unless you’re a victim of it then sadly, I don’t think you can ever fully

understand. Zozibini’s answer to the question, “What is the most important thing that we should be teaching young girls today?” is what mesmerised me the most. She replied by saying, “I think the most important thing that we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time, not because we don’t want to but because of what society labelled women to be.” She continued by saying, “I think we are the most powerful beings in the world and that we should be given every opportunity. And that is what we should be teaching these young girls to do, is to take up space. Nothing is more important than taking space in society and cementing yourself. Thank-you.” If that hasn’t moved you in any way, shape or form then I do not know what will.

Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe 2019 are all women of colour. Guyana also has a woman of colour; Joylyn Conway as our Miss World representative for 2019, will she be next? Are we finally giving our young girls of colour something and someone to look up to? Are we finally allowing young girls to validate their dreams and giving them cemented hopes of a bright future? As far as I know, we’ve come a long way from Vanessa Williams and the controversial story of her surrendering her crown for Miss America (coincidental?

I think not) to Zozibini Tunzi in 2019 for Miss Universe.

With all of that said, I’d like to conclude by finally saying; Dear brown girls, your dreams are valid!

To the family and friends of substance abusers

T

HIS week I saw a few clients for substance use and abuse issues. However, what actually affected me most was seeing the effect it had on those around them. The family/friends of substance abusers are equally if not even more affected than the user him/ herself. The drug might not physically enter their bodies and harm them as it does the user but those close to them are definitely mentally, socially, emotionally and financially affected.

If you are a substance abuser and do not want to seek help for yourself, I hope this article gives you the motivation to stop using for the ones you love. If you are the family/friend of an abuser/ addict, I hope you find comfort in this piece and seek the help that is available for you within our community.

It has long been said that addiction is a family disease.

It affects spouses, children, parents, siblings and even friends. This is for a multitude of reasons. The abuser spends most of his/her time obsessing, obtaining and using the drug, they spend most of their money on the drug, often have issues with the law, and are often unemployed. Additionally, they tend to be unreliable, unkind, and abusive or absent. All of these causes many issues within the family, many arguments, much shame, divorce and even suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

In a typical family unit, each individual has specific role/s. This helps the family successfully function and maintains order. When even one of those individual gets addicted to drugs, it throws the whole balance off as roles have to be shifted between the other members of the family. Additionally, new roles are developed in order to deal with the negative

effects of substance abuse.

When there is drug abuse within the family, there are specific roles taken up by each member. Each role forces one to neglect their own needs and cater to others.

Below are the possible roles.

The Hero Often the eldest, most responsible and hard- working person in the family.

They are over-achievers and perfectionists that take on responsibility that they are not responsible for. They want to make no mistakes to make up for all the errors that the substance abuser makes. This makes failure particularly difficult for them to deal with and often leads to insecurity and low self-esteem.

The scapegoat This is the one that typically gets into trouble (mostly a child). They are blamed for all wrongdoings in the home and are labelled troublesome or rebellious. Everyone is so distracted by their behaviour that they sometimes fail to see the real problem at hand.

This behaviour can be due to a parent being an addict and mostly leads to addiction itself. Mostly, this person/ child feels unheard, neglected and lonely.

The Mascot This is the individual who assumes the role of a comic.

They are often full of energy, jokes, and smiles- whether or not they truly feel that way on the inside. They use humour as a coping mechanism and are charming and fun to be around. They typically feel that this is an important distraction for the rest of the family- laugh to forget the worries. They get hurt like anyone else but mostly hide it for the benefit of others.

The Lost Child This one seems quiet, distant, isolated but yet content.

He/she makes sure to remain invisible as to not cause any additional problems within the family. They do not personally get involved with any issues. They have trouble socialising and developing relationships in general. On the inside, they typically feel hurt, unheard and lonely.

The Enabler This individual is usually the spouse or eldest child of an addict. They pick up the slack and do all the tasks that the addict can no longer do. They become the breadwinner, do the housework, and take care of other family members- pretty much everything. They provide the time and money the addict needs to obtain the drug. Most importantly, they make excuses for the addict, especially in social situations. This, while helpful and kind to the others, has the opposite effect on the addict. An addict is much less likely to seek treatment if they have an enabler in their lives.

Do you recognise any of these roles? Have you adopted them?

How does substance use affect children?

Children are particularly affected by substance abuse within a home. Children raised by a substance abuser are basically being raised by a single parent. The non-using parent (if there even is one) often has to do all the cooking, cleaning, school work, and make the financial living for the family. The children tend to grow up in a home without structure or order.

A child of an addict is more likely to have issues socialising, have issues at school, problems with the law and is more vulnerable to general issues of mental health (any type).

Addicts are particularly

violent and may be so to their children, starting a cycle of abuse. Please remember that children who are abused (physically, emotionally or sexually) are more likely to abuse their spouses and their own children. Children of addicts are more likely to drop out of school than children of non-addicts. Children of addicts are more likely to become addicts themselves, especially alcoholics. Children of alcoholics are four times more likely to develop alcoholism. If the addict is using illicit substances, children are unfairly exposed to illegal activities. Being raised by an addict and experiencing all of the above results in low self-confidence and self-esteem, loneliness, guilt, anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. It results in a fear of abandonment and a lack of respect for the parents; the one for using and the other for staying. Very often, because of parental drug abuse, children are raised by extended family such as grandparents.

How does substance use affect a spouse/partner?

It is very difficult to live with someone who often uses alcohol/ drugs. As mentioned, it causes a multitude of issues such as fear, lack of trust or resentment. The non-using partner often starts to doubt and even blame themselves for their partners use. They habitually believe that they are unloved as if their partner loved them, they would stop using. They feel guilty for not leaving the situation but instead exposing their children to it. They feel sad, angry and embarrassed; they feel helpless and hopeless.

The lack of trust stems from the persistent lying and stealing done by the drug user. They often lie about their use or where they have

been. Often, the non-using partner has to hide valuables as the user steals in order to fund their habit. Sadly, the closest things available go first which means they begin to steal from their families before anyone else.

One using partner also increases the possibility of two using partners. This situation is harder on both partners as well as children. That household would be very dysfunctional and children would be particularly neglected. When both partners are users, there is a less chance of divorce but a high rate of enabling and co-dependency. This means they feed off each other’s habits and unknowingly encourage each other to keep using.

How does substance use affect parents?

I am not yet a parent but the popular consensus is that you will never love another human being the way you love your child. This obviously means that you want nothing but the best for them; that their pain is your pain.

It is incredibly difficult to watch your child struggle- in any capacity.

A child’s drug use causes a lot of issues between the parents. They begin to neglect each other and spend most of their energy and resources on the child. Some even have to stop working due to the guilt, stress, anxiety and depression that the situation may cause.

Many arguments happen due to a difference of opinion of how to handle the situation.

Everyone has different opinions which usually becomes hard to respect when in difficult situations. Many parents blame each other and tend to separate or get divorced over hardships caused by children.

If you are a family member/friend of an addict, the most important thing to re-

member is that it is not your fault, even if they say that it is. It is a very common characteristic of an addict to blame any and everyone else for their habit. Sadly, there isn’t much you can do either.

An addict needs to want to get help. The only thing you can do is keep educated on the pattern so you can pass on information- both to the addict and anyone else in the family. Try not to be an enabler. Seek help for yourself.

There are Al-Anon meetings available in Guyana.

These are specific support groups for the family and friends of substance abusers.

With the whole family involved, it usually starts with an intervention. In the meantime, if you have someone close to you who is an addict, spend the next week researching all you can about addiction, their specific drug of choice and the harms it does to the mind and body. You will need that to be able to conduct an intervention.

Guyanese YouTuber spreading awareness of social issues through the use of creative videos

DITNARINE Sugrim grew up in a little village located in East Canje called Reliance Settlement.

He could remember, at a very young age, always being cultured, taking part in social, educational & religious activities and tak-

ing on challenges in and around his community.

During the past years, Sugrim noticed that many young and vibrant youth

have been committing suicide due to different personal reasons. Knowing this at a young age, he wanted to put a stop to it

but didn’t know how. At the time, he had recently joined a social group in my village. The Golden Om Dharmic Youth Organisation has been working alongside social workers and other professionals, in collaborations to prevent citizens from engaging in any act that might harm themselves. A lot of lives have been truly touched and Uditnarine is happy to

laugh. Seeing others laugh is what made him happy. As he reminisced on his past, he never wished or wanted anything like that to happen to anyone—the way he felt and the bullying he faced.

“That’s how I started to create awareness on what I’ve experienced in short films via YouTube,” he said.

As long as he can remember, he always wanted to be a creator on YouTube.

express that he was a part of that. He took it upon himself to take it a step further, to show youth that they are the future. Sugrim involved some young people from across Guyana and other countries in a short film called “#StopBullying” which was also an initiative started by the said organisation.

Uditnarine was very dispirited as a teenager. At a very young age, he faced bullying and never liked being picked on. He witnessed his very own classmates laugh at him—it made him feel ashamed and embarrassed. He never told anyone because he didn’t want them to see him as weak.

Hence, he would always try to overcome it by spreading laughter. Anytime he was around his friends, he would make jokes just to see them

He enjoys making films and short videos. YouTube has such a huge platform for anyone to showcase their talents and create awareness and Uditnarine plans to take advantage of all of that.

The young content creator has been receiving positive feedback from people who have viewed his films and he surely sees himself continuing down this very path even though it is a difficult task to produce, film and edit, I really do enjoy it. The biggest challenge he has ever been faced with was himself.

As he was being bullied, he oftentimes blamed his self for it. He always held myself accountable for any bad thing that has ever happened to him in the past. In a way, it was sort of a good thing but when he looked at the downside of it, he was really putting pressure on

himself for things he can’t be blamed for. Uditnarine has worked on bettering his self-development for a few years and he can now proudly say that he overcame that type of thinking. He has now developed a more optimistic way of thinking and his life has changed a bit.

Recently, he has been reaching out to persons who might be interested in being in a film that would create awareness on social issues.

He is currently working on a three-part series called “Youths; Empowering the Strength in Youths”. The first part of the series was

HO says regular folk cannot afford to buy brand-name and high-end products just like the people in upscale neighbourhoods? Well, this is possible at a store in Rosignol.

At Ayube Hamid’s Furniture Store (Home Line Furnishings) located at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, customers can afford to shop top-shelf products in relative ease.

One of the chain store owners, Fazeena Mobarakhali, told the Pepperpot Magazine that they have three branches located at Rose Hall, New Amsterdam, and Rosignol; the furniture factory is located at Canefield, East Canje, Berbice.

She related that at the Rosignol branch they have employed 10 persons from the community; their prices are simply unbeatable because they believe that everybody must afford to take

home something of quality.

Mobarakhali explained that the business has been in the family for the past 32 years and before her father passed away, they used to be the local supplier of quality household furniture to mega-stores such as Courts, Fogarty’s and Singers.

The mother of two related that at their furniture store they make furniture from scratch, using the best quality woods to make chairs, tables, vanities, dinette sets, beds, wardrobes, television stands; they also custom-make furniture based on orders.

She added that at their Rosignol branch like the other two stores, their prices are the best and cannot be matched with others; they provide warranties on their electrical products and everything in stock is within customers’ reach.

“We don’t have a high mark-up because we value our customers and we don’t overcharge on our prices simply for all to be able to

afford to take home something they always wanted to buy, but couldn’t afford to,” she said.

Mobarakhali disclosed that all their products are sourced both locally and overseas to ensure maximum quality; they have in stock only the top brands such as Samsung, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, General Electronics, and Panasonic, Black and Decker and other high-quality brands.

At Home Line Furnishings there are washing machines, blenders, gas stoves, steam irons, juice makers, music sets, smart televisions, cellphones and other electrical products.

She stated that the business is supervised by a manager when she is not around and even though she resides in New Amsterdam, she makes the journey almost every day to oversee the smooth operations of the store.

“In this store, we cater for all, no matter how much or little money you come here with; I can assure you can leave with something that is of good quality and a reliable brand name as well,” she said.

Home Line Furnishings Store is opened from 08:00hrs to up until 19:00hrs and they are optimistic that business will flourish with the fast-approaching Christmas season; a time of year when people spend lavishly.

Mobarakhali told the Pepperpot Magazine that right now they have a daily promotion which started since December 1, to select a winner daily at the three branches. Every $5,000 spent earns the customer a coupon.

She explained that they have daily drawings at the three locations to select three winners every day and they take home some fantastic prizes and this is their way of giving back to society this Christmas.

Mobarakhali noted that the store is the official dealer in household appliances, furniture, electronics and other electrical gadgets such as cellphones, etc.

NAREI’s research shows: Non-chemical control of Diamond Back Moth possible

T

he National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) has been encouraging farmers to practice Integrated Pest Management (IPM), an environmentally friendly approach to control pests and diseases.

The Institute successfully conducted a trial to control the Diamond Back Month in cabbage production. The experiment, which included no chemicals, was conducted on Mr. Deodat Seodat’s farm situated at Parika, East Bank Essequibo. The research team comprised NAREI’s Researchers Mr. Howard London, Ms. Oceana O’Deana and Anesha Stephen.

The DBM is probably one of the most studied insect pests in the world, yet it is one of the most difficult pests to manage. It has shown resistance to almost every insecticide. DBM is a highly invasive species. It originated in Europe, South Africa or East Asia, but is now present wherever cruciferous such as cabbage, kale, pak choy and broccoli are grown. The DBM larvae feed on the crops causing them to be unmarketable.

Our local farming community is affected by this pest. The presence of this pest warrants the excessive use of chemicals to salvage the crop. However, through NAREI’s recent research it was proven that this pest could be controlled without the use of chemicals.

According to Dr. Oudho

Homenuath, Chief Executive Officer of NAREI, the result of this trial is very promising.

The research was conducted using organic products, which were able to suppress the pest with similarity to the chemicals which are normally used by farmers. The team has additional work to do, but the objective is for NAREI to provide detailed guidance to farmers on an improved management approach for this pest.

NAREI is working to change the way in which farmers manage pest locally.

Dr. Homenauth related that NAREI has been getting positive feedback from farmers who would have partnered with the Institute in this regard.

“Some farmers are interested in using these organic products even at this preliminary stage. Based on what they have seen, the farmers are convinced that cabbage can be produced without the use of chemicals. NAREI will continue to work towards addressing this pest issue,” He said.

The DBM is highly migratory and wind-borne adults can travel long distances to invade crops in other regions or even countries. Immature stages also hitchhike on plant parts and can establish in new areas. DBM costs the economy an estimated US$5B annually, but its impacts on local biodiversity and habitats in exotic ranges due to excess chemical use are unknown.

IMPROVING YOUR WRITING Use direct Speech in Your Story A low groan that came from a nearby bedroom reminded Georgie that Papa was home. Ever so often work would be slack at the factory and some workers would be laid off.

“Why do you always have to be one of them?” Mama would ask angrily when Papa came home with the unwelcome news. “They don’t seem to want you at all, at all. Maybe you are very slack on the job, so they are quick to lay you off.”

Sometimes Papa would give some plausible-sounding reason, but most of the time he would not bother. He was convinced that his wife did not believe him. But I do, Georgie would say to himself with fierce loyalty. I know that malicious foreman don’t like Papa at all. Never mind Papa – he would look across at the beaten, humiliated father and try to send the words soundlessly, just with his eyes – never mind. One day I’ll be somebody big and you won’t have to be working in that old factory.

NOTE: The well-known passage above is a reminder about another technique to enhance narrative compositions.

Pay great attention to its use of dialogue and an example of simple style. It is much better at times to use direct speech (dialogue) in stories. It makes the characters and story come alive. Example: There is much more interaction between characters, and interest to the reader for the writer to say: “They don’t seem to want you at all, at all,” Mama would say angrily.

More about dialogue use in narrative We’ll now deal with three more dialogue techniques.

1. Sometimes the verb said is overused in dialogue tags.

Choose tag verbs carefully. A dialogue tag is most often used after a character has spoken. You can move away sometimes from using said to using emphasising or vivid verbs that denote differences in a character’s voice tone.

“He’s only in a weakness!” screamed the widow…. “Get a doctor!” she cried.

‘Screamed the widow’ and ‘she cried’ are dialogue tags.

This example also deals with a tag used in the middle of a dialogue. Here a comma is used before the dialogue tag and goes INSIDE the quotation marks. Unless the dialogue tag begins with a proper noun, it is not capitalised. And yes, you can use dialogue every three or four lines of narrative. Listen to your dialogue tags in your narrative, they should not sound slanted; but if they sound right, they are right.

2. In addition to the importance of useful tags lines, dialogues could include action in character description, such as facial expressions, gestures, and mannerisms. Look at this example: “The heat can do a lot of harm too, though,” said the neighbour, absent-mindedly, as he pulled a long blade of grass from between the stones of the wall and began to chew the end of it. (Note the comma after ‘neighbour’ that introduces the description.

This technique also helps the reader to closer visualise what is going on.

3. Is your character aged, uneducated, etc.? Use words and phrases appropriately to make him sound like you are writing his real-life conversation. Play it by ear. Let it sound authentic.

4. Another thing in dialogue is to include the names of those to whom the speaker is speaking.
