As part of the Emancipation celebrations, members of this African group, on Friday evening, held their traditional Libation ceremony at the Square of the Revolution. The event was organised by the IFA house of Santaria. Mother Beverly Bacchus who was leading this year’s Libation ceremony told the Guyana Chronicle of the importance of the ceremony, stating that the libation is a period of reflection and appreciation for the struggles and sacrifices of the forefathers and their fight for the abolition of slavery. She said during the libation a drink offering is brought to the ancestors. “At this time we remember them because it was around this time that we got freedom after their call and fight for us to be free. So this is a customary practice that we give homage to them for the service and the sacrifices that they have given for us all as Guyanese as a whole,” explained Bacchus (Carl Croker photo)
