The story of your Christmas Pepperpot

By Francis Quamina Farrier ONE of Guyana’s popular National Dishes is Pepperpot, which has its origins in the heart of the hinterlands where many of Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples reside. For many Guyanese, Pepperpot is prepared and consumed mainly at Christmas time, while for others it is enjoyed all year round.

For example, in most hinterland communities and also at the Banks DIH Camp Street, Quik Serv, located on the same block with Citizens Bank, Pepperpot is prepared among other dishes every Sunday morning and the sessions are usually well patronised. Many of the customers turn up after attending their Sunday Morning service.

It was cooked over wood fires or in coal pots fired with coals supplying the fuel. But that was a long time ago, and even though the method of preparing Pepperpot has been modernised using electric stoves and pressure pots, the basics elements remain the same.

In Guyana’s North West District (now officially Region One), and other hinterland regions such as the Cuyuni, the Mazaruni and the Rupununi, the Cassava plant is wildly cultivated. While garlic pork and black cake among others are also popular at Christmas time in Guyana, Pepperpot reigns supreme among them and, for many, the making of the dish results in an enthusiastic, “Hooray!”. Back in the day of Christmas in colonial British Guiana, which is before the invention of the electric stove, folks on the coastlands of the

ment and consider the hard-working cassava farmers who toil daily in sun and rain to tend their cassava farms. And as a quick aside, I have to mention the healthy-looking cassava plants which I saw at a farm at East Dangme in Ghana, while on a recent visit to that West African country. One needs to be reminded that although there is an impressive produc-

tion of cassava in our sister Commonwealth country Ghana, there is no Pepperpot available over there.

As we continue to think of those who make significant contributions to our Christmas Pepperpot, let’s now consider the women in Guyana who fetch the cassava for long distances from the farms after the reaping, then grate and process the root crop into the dark, molasses-like cassareep. All that is just the beginning of the process of making our Christmas Pepperpot, the cassareep being one of the principal ingredients. Once the cassareep is acquired, then you have the other ingredients which include beef, veal, pork and other meats such as “wile meat”. Those will have been acquired as a result of other hard-working farmers and hunters; mainly the men.

If the cooking process is done over a primitive fire or fireside, then one has to consider whose job it was to collect the firewood or coconut husks. If the Pepperpot is cooked on a modern electric stove, the manufacturer must be acknowledged. So, too, should those who work in electricity companies, toiling day and night to ensure that the electric stove is functioning to produce the fire which keeps the pot with the Pepperpot, boiling, boiling, boiling.

And of course we must not forget those who manufactured the pot; be it a regular pot, or a pressure pot. Even the manufacturer of the

big spoon which is used to stir the pot should not be ignored. Finally, the bowl or plate and cutlery into which the finished Pepperpot is placed and which is lifted and placed into our watering mouths was the product of a manufacturer, who like all others who contributed to our Christmas Pepperpot, must also be acknowledged.

If you are not a vegetarian, consider the many people who have contributed to that special Indigenous Guyanese dish you delve into at Christmas time, and especially when you request or have yourself a second serving. There is a calypso song entitled, “Santa Looking for a Wife”, in which Santa Claus is advised to come to the Caribbean where he will find the best wife possible.

The suspicion is that the wife Santa will find most loving and rewarding, is one who knows how to prepare a good Pepperpot and teach him, too, how to do so, as well and together they will share out the toys to the good girls and boys and Pepperpot to the good Ladies and Gentlemen. And as Santa goes from home to home here in Guyana and with his jolly belly full of Christmas Pepperpot, he’ll be saying, not just, “ho, ho, ho!”, but rather, HO, HO, HO!”, while on the Radio we hear the classic Guyanese Christmas song by the Four Lords, “Santa Claus on his way, Happy Christmas to you Dear, Happy Holiday”.

A visit to Baramita

THE community of Baramita is located about 20 miles west of Matthew’s Ridge in Guyana’s Barima-Waini Region. Despite facing numerous challenges, Baramita and its residents are resilient and determined to find solutions to their problems. A recent visitor to the community noted that very fact.

Christian Vargas, a volunteer at Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc., sat down with the Pepperpot Magazine to talk about his experience during a recent visit to Baramita. He explained that he has a passion for helping families and working with non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He related that he travelled to Baramita with the Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc.’s project team last week to assess the community’s needs. “This was the main purpose – to identify, in particular, help that the organisation can provide to the village or the community and to identify also the living conditions of the community and some problems that the community is facing now,” Vargas said.

There are two routes to accessing Baramita. The easiest route is by cargo plane. This was the route that Vargas took and he told the Pepperpot Magazine that the view from the airplane is amazing. The other route combines travel over land and water. That route is understandably longer, taking over 20 hours.

STARK DIFFERENCE Vargas recalled reading up on Baramita before his trip. Most of the news he read was negative. However, his first impressions of the community contrasted with what he had read. The picture he had been forming in his mind was different from the reality.

The landscape of Baramita reminded him of the landscape of southern Chile, his homeland. He explained that the community of Baramita is made up of multiple settlements with some miles of distance between them.

Vargas had previously visited the Rupununi and he noted that the styles of traditional Indigenous architecture were different in the two places.

Mining is the community’s main economic activity. He noted that there are no large mining companies. Rather, there are small companies and individuals who practice artisanal mining.

Residents who work in mining walk miles, up to four hours on a rough road, to reach the mines and then walk the same route to return home at the end of the day. Mainly men are involved in the mining sector but there are also groups of women who often take their children with them. There are even cases where entire families go to the mines.

However, they are expected to speak English when they begin attending school. The complications related to the language barrier extend to the adults in the community as well. Vargas related that there are instances where persons are given medication and need to have the instructions translated into Carib so that they can take their medicine.

Chronicle wows with intricate creations Staffers use upcycling to create unique Christmas decorations

By Shirley Thomas INTERIOR décor at the Guyana Chronicle for the Christmas holidays has now been taken to another level thanks to the creativity and ingenuity of two dynamic visionary young staff –Librarian, Onika Gentle and Accounts Clerk, Regina Paul.

These creative and hard-working women, thinking outside the box, have combined colour and glitter with vision and detail to come up with interesting and attractively designed Christmas decorations. And what’s more, they have taken on a green approach, upcycling items- such as plastic sanitary cups, cardboard and the core of the newsprint reeland using them as a base for their creations.

It’s amazing the volume of work these two young ladies have produced in just two weeks, wowing management and other staff of the Guyana National Newspapers Ltd and customers alike.

Adding a touch of class to the environment, they have already created and installed their creations in literally every department within the company. Such works include images of Santa Claus, Christmas wreaths, wall and Christmas tree decorations, a winter warming fireplace and ‘Frosty the Snowman’.

Credit also goes out to the duo for designing and setting up Diwali decorations within and around the company’s facilities in the recent past. Having received their initial exposure in craft making from their loved ones, the ladies have excelled in tibisiri cords, straw hats, handbags tie and dye and Batik among other things.

And now, wowing their bosses and workmates, Onika and Regina have taken the creation of Christmas decorations to another level, pausing to express gratitude to their mothers and aunt respectively, and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year.

‘The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree’

Says Barber Lloyd Alleyne AS a young boy growing up in Albouystown, Lloyd Alleyne was more often than not glued to his television set. Politics intrigued him. He would often picture himself being on TV; revelling in the thought that perhaps someday, he might very well become an ‘important’ figure to be admired like the rest on television.

But as he grew older, he thought to himself that maybe nothing was wrong with picking up another trade along the way; and that sometime in the future, he might be able to return to his original dream.

It was not hard for Lloyd to decide which other trade to pursue. All his life, he’s seen his dad, Dexter Alleyne, do nothing else but barbering.

Born and raised at James and Campbell Streets, Albouystown, the now 27-year-old could not be more happy and content that he decided to learn the trade. He now has his own barbershop at Lot 116 Hunter Street, in Georgetown.

Growing up in Albouystown had its own challenges, but looking back, Lloyd said he always knew what he wanted. The distractions were plenty, but he went to school. He started at Selman Fraser Nursery School and then pressed on to Ketley Primary and Tutorial High Schools.

watching yourself on TV and being that important person that everyone will be seeing…

But I realised that not everything you dream of might come

through” he told the Pepperpot Magazine.

Lloyd started cutting people’s hair in an informal manner; sometimes in their yard or in their homes, and hence became well-known for it. He didn’t actually help his dad to cut people’s hair in the barbershop, but he did help with other work around the shop.

Christmas smiles to 200 children Region Two Department of Culture, Youth and Sport brings holiday cheer

Party bags being presented to children at Queenstown Primary School

BRIGHT smiles were seen on hundreds of children’s faces in Region Two as the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport hosted its annual Children’s Party. The party was held on Friday at the Queenstown Primary and Nursery School and 200 children received toys and party bags with goodies.

According to Culture and Youth Officer Mr. Herald Alves, the party is an annual event and aims at bringing joy to children especially during the festive season of Christmas. He said the party is part of the department’s 2018 programme and gears at building relationships and fostering social cohesion amongst villagers and young people.

Alves said that toys and goodies were donated by friends and associates of the department. “This shows the department’s efforts in networking. [We] just facilitated the party part, everything else was provided by donors,” he said.

This is the sixth party held by the department in Region Two over the years. The

others were hosted in Bethany, Mashabo, Red Village, Onderneeming and Malbrough, Lower Pomeroon River.

Children were excited and were even seen peeping in their party bags. They thanked the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport for the goodies during the season.

Once Upon A Starlight

A Christmas Story

Angela pressed her face against the glass of the toy store window. She looked longingly at the chocolate-coloured doll with the tight black curls, dressed in a white blouse and frilly red skirt. Oh how she wanted that doll! But she knew that her parents couldn’t afford to buy it for her.

It was almost Christmas. The store windows were draped with coloured paper streamers and shiny bits of tinsel. The sidewalk stalls had balloons, starlights and paper Christmas hats. The fruit vendors sat with their piles of pineapples, paw paws, oranges and shiny tangerines. And there was a tall Christmas tree in the park that shone with many coloured lights at night.

Angela sighed as she turned away from the store window. Pushing her way through the crowds of excited Christmas shoppers, she tried to console herself. She could not have the doll, but she did have a paper bag with three starlights. They were not little starlights, but giant ones. Old Miss Hannah, who lived nearby, had given them to her because

As soon as it was dark Angela went into the yard to light her first starlight. Carol watched from the front steps and squeezed her little hands together in excitement.

Angela struck a match and placed it against the tip of the long starlight. A gentle Christmas breeze dimmed the flame of the match. Then as it flared again the starlight sparkled and crackled. Angela held it firmly as hundreds of little lights darted everywhere, like stars dancing away in the night.

“Swing it around, Angela!” shouted Carol. “Make the lights spin!”

Angela was just about to twirl the starlight in wide circles over her head, when she stopped. She blinked; she could not believe her eyes. There sitting on the top of the starlight was a little old lady,

Angela had helped her to set up her stall.

When Angela got home her father was sitting on the verandah. He had been out of work for some time and he looked very sad.

Every day he went looking for work, but he couldn’t find any. Her mother, who was sitting just inside the front door, was busy sewing; she was making clothes to sell to the stores. Angela’s little sister, Carol, ran to meet her.

“What did you buy, Angela?” she called out when she saw the paper bag. Angela showed her family the starlights and explained how she had got them. “I am going to light one each night until Christmas,” she declared “I’m glad that you will have something for Christmas,” said her mother, with a sigh “There is no extra money for presents this year. The money I will get for this sewing will only be enough to buy us some food. I don’t even know if we will have enough to share with Miss Hannah. I know she is alone, and we always invite her to eat with us on Christmas Day ...but things have become so expensive. This has been a hard year.”

Angela’s father looked even more sad.

Angela’s heart pounded with fright.

“Don’t be afraid,” said the little old lady. “I am the Auntie of the Starlight. It was kind of you to help miss Hannah to set up her stall, and I have come to reward you. Each evening as you light a starlight I will appear, and each time you may have a wish for Christmas.

What is your first wish, Angela?”

Angela trembled with anticipation as she thought about the doll in the store window.

Then she remembered her father and how sad he had looked. I still have two other wishes, she said to herself. Maybe I can use this one for Daddy.

“Can I wish for something for somebody else?” she asked in a whisper. “Of course,” replied the Auntie of the Starlight. “ They are your wishes. You can use them in any way that you want.” “Then I wish that Daddy could get a job,” said Angela breathlessly.

The old lady tossed her head, showering sparkles of light all over the place. “You may have your wish,” she said. And before Angela could thank her, the starlight spluttered, and the old lady disappeared with the last little shimmering lights.

“Oh, Angela, that was so pretty!” cried Carol. “Did you see her too?” said Angela.

“See who?” asked Carol. “What are you talking about?” “Oh, nothing,” replied An-

gela, deciding that she must have imagined the whole thing. The next day while Angela’s father went to look for work as usual, Angela helped her mother with the sewing.

“I’m glad you can hem so well, Angela,” her mother said. “We must finish these today as tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I am depending on the money I get for them. Though, how I will mange to fill my next order, I don’t know. This old sewing machine is giving trouble and I’m sure it will cost a lot to fix it.

I suppose I will just have to sew everything by hand. But that will take so long that maybe the store will give the orders to someone else.

“They wouldn’t do that, Mummy,” said Angela reassuringly, though, to tell the truth, she was not at all sure that they wouldn’t.

When Angela’s father came home that evening he looked quite different. He laughed happily as he exclaimed, “I’ve got a job! It’s at a new factory which needed extra help for Christmas, and if I work well the job will be permanent.”

Angela’s mother smiled. “I’m so glad,” she said, “Angela needs shoes to got to school next term and my sewing machine needs fixing.” “Well,” replied her father, “I’ll have enough money for shoes, but that machine is too old now. They don’t even have parts for it anymore. You really need a new one, but I’ll have to work for some time before we can think of that.”

Comfort Sleep celebrates 20 years of support for less fortunate children

IT’S Christmas time again and Comfort Sleep, for the 20th year around has ushered in the spirit of the season for close to 500 less fortunate children, with the hosting of three Christmas parties in their honour, over the last few days.

The parties which, according to organisers brought “good tidings and unspeakable joy” to the hearts of the children, were held at three separate locations and were designed for those who are the beneficiaries of Comfort Sleep’s School Feeding Programmes in Regions Three, Four and Six. The first party which hosted about 300 children was held at the Aracari Resort, West Bank Demerara on December 8; the second was at the Eclipse Halls, New Amsterdam, Berbice on December 9, and the final party

was held later at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, Carmichael Street Georgetown.

That party catered for more than 100 children on therapy, as well as the parent/guardian accompanying them.

There was music, fun and great excitement resonating amongst the children, with bountiful supplies of food, drink and other goodies. Not least, there was a ceremonial appearance made by Jolly Old Santa Claus who signalled his arrival with his usual “Ho! Ho! Ho!”. Santa’s distribution of toys and gifts was assisted by Managing Director of Comfort, Dennis Charran. With him also were: his wife, Sabita Charran and administrator, Amanda Cheong who ensured that every child was presented with a gift.

Christmas is a time of fun and joy

But not for all Veterinarian, Dr. Nicholas Waldron

By M Margaret Burke AS part of many families in Guyana and around the world, dogs and other pet animals play a vital role in the whole setting. Dogs especially can be found as part of a very large number of families globally, while many of them can be seen almost everywhere – in the streets and within the neighbourhoods.

However, dogs and those who have adopted them as family or friends have some serious problems to deal with, especially at Christmas time, New Year’s Eve and generally during the festive season. The same problem is quite evident at Diwali and other such occasions where fireworks are involved.

What the fear of loud noises can do to your dog

THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR FEARS “Basically, because dog’s ears are much, much more sensitive than ours, they could hear sounds that we don’t hear, so the loud bangs and vibrations generated by explosions are over-stimulations for their sensitive ears, so it is painful to them,” one of Guyana’s renowned Veterinarians, Dr. Nicholas Waldron explained in an interview with the Pepperpot Magazine.

He said that the consequences are that some of them would try to escape the loud sounds and because of fear a lot of them even run under kennels. In addition, some of the dogs try to run into the house and might even become aggressive when their owners try to handle them, by snapping at them or trying to bite them.

Dr. Waldron further explained that many of the dogs run out unto to road and get knocked down; some even get injured on or stuck in fences with sharp edges as they try to escape the noise. “Once on the road, they become a traffic hazard; they become a hazard to people who are scared of dogs and might react in a fearful manner towards them and therefore people too may end up getting injured,” he said. “These dogs might end up getting into fights with seasoned stray dogs and then they get injured that way; they may get stolen or never find their way back home, which is anguish for both them, as well as their owners who lose them.”

Overcoming Heart Break extend the pain, trust me. Get the negative energy out in a healthy way- cry, scream into a pillow- whatever it is you need to do to really feel it.

Despite the pain that comes with it, realism is your friend right now- in every way possible. Most people have skewed memories of their relationship after a break-up, only remembering the few good times or personal wrongs. Many forget all the arguments, reasons not to trust and the times where their partner made them feel worthless - the realistic and truthful view of what it actually was (most of the time).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not beneficial to pretend that you were never in love with

LAST week, two of my readers expressed their worry about the possibility of not enjoying their favourite time of year (as they haven’t been enjoying much else).

They were concerned about the heartbreak they are experiencing and asked me for some information on how to overcome the sadness that comes with the end of a long-term relationship.

To feel heartbreak is to feel a deep emotional loss. I know it’s not what you guys want to hear, but it’s meant to be hard and we are supposed to grieve after trauma like that- that’s the only healthy way to get over it.

While all human experiences differ, the universal symptoms of heartbreak are persistent sadness, anger, crying, overthinking as well as an inability to eat or sleep. It really does feel never-ending. I actually think people go through the five stages of grief during the process of a breakup. These are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and, finally, acceptance. For instance, during a typical breakup, we don’t want to believe that it’s actually over which causes us to make unrealistic promises to both our partner and ourselves. We then become angry with or blame the breakup on either our partner or ourselves. We may then plead with our former significant other to try one last time to make things work. When this does not have an effect, we fall into the deep sadness that accompanies this loss until enough time has passed for us to finally accept the situation and move forward.

While time really is the best medicine, in this case, there are things that can be done to speed up the recovery process. The thing about psychology is that it’s a form of science and there has been research conducted to support the effectiveness of everything I’m about to mention- all you have to do

is apply it where you can. A particular research study conducted in the United States now comes to mind.

Researchers decided to test three methods to determine which led to a decrease in negative feelings towards an ex. They recruited newly, single participants and divided them into four groups. The first group was asked to think negative things about their ex- these were the things that really bothered them while they were in the relationship. The second group was asked to accept the feelings they were currently having without beating themselves up – giving them sentences to read such as “It’s ok to love someone I’m no longer with.” The third group was asked to think about things that generally made them happy- things that did not involve their past significant other at all. The fourth and final group was used as a neutral group and were asked to just sit in the room, without thinking of anything in particular – their thoughts could wander wherever. After the participants were placed into these groups, they were shown love themed scenes as well as pictures of their ex. The frequency and intensity of their emotions were again measured by the researchers. All three of the strategies were found to decrease the emotional responses that the participants initially had. This means that by practising any of the three above strategies, they felt less anger and sadness when seeing their ex.

Although painful, I never understood why people regret being in love. Knowing that you’re capable of that emotion, is knowing that you have a loving, caring heart and you’re not afraid of being vulnerable to it. Having said that, accept what you are feeling as the more you fight it, the longer you will feel it. Drowning out the pain with alcohol or other drugs will do nothing but

that person. The key is acknowledging and accepting what qualities you did love about them and believe that you can find those qualities in other people. For those really struggling to get to grips with reality, it is best to list reasons why the relationship did not work out or reasons why that particular person may not be for you. Read this every day if you have to.

Practice forgiveness- with or without an apology. I won’t get into this too much as I discussed forgiveness last week but I’ll say that any anger or hatred that you hold on to will also extend your grief period.

Mangroves Management Programme NAREI researching mud and silt along the coastline Data to inform future investments in infrastructure development THE National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) awarded a $2.7M contract to Surveying and Project Management Inc. to install Graduated Measuring Gauges along the foreshores of Columbia to Aberdeen and Anna Regina to Henrietta, Region Two and Lusignan, Region Four. The project commenced in November and has a two-month duration.

This is part of NAREI’s Mangrove Management Programme, which requires the continuous monitoring of erosion and accretion along the foreshore. To date, NAREI has incorporated periodic topographic surveys in the form of low-cost rapid assessment surveys

as part of the Mangrove Department’s annual monitoring of the coastline. Topographic surveys have been completed in Regions Two, Four, and Six at potential and restored mangroves sites.

According to Kene Moseley, Project Coordinator, “The monitoring of mud and silt along the coastline is part of the department’s research programme that supports the identification of foreshore changes, and provides critical information to inform the design of the most appropriate restoration approach.”

Moseley emphasised that it is costly to complete systematic topographic surveys of all restored and potential restoration sites.

Hence, the Mangrove Department is pursuing a low-cost solution to aid in the continuous monitoring of mud elevation along the coast in the form of installation of graduated measuring gauges along selected foreshores.

In order to implement this new elevation monitoring programme, NAREI engaged the contractor to construct and establish the monitoring gauges, as well as conduct training of monitoring officers and rangers.

She noted that permanent monitoring gauges will be constructed and installed at Henrietta to Anna Regina, Columbia to

Aberdeen in Region Two. Works have commenced at Lusignan, in Region Four, as a pilot to monitor changes in elevation at these locations.

The gauges have been designed to be simple and user-friendly and will allow rangers to accurately read, interpret and record mud elevation points on graduated rods located throughout the sites on a monthly basis.

The objective of the survey is to obtain foreshore and beach level in the vicinity of the sea defences in order to provide a baseline for future monitoring activities.

Big things popping Guyanese makeup artist making it big in New York about ways to make the most of the ‘American dream’.

I stumbled upon YouTube tutorials and was stuck on them for hours. That’s when I decided this is what I want to do. I’m basically a selftaught makeup artist and my artistic talent and skills play a great part in me creating my own techniques.”

She added, “Fast forward to today, I currently have my own YouTube channel- ‘Chocolate Abby’ with 4272 subscribers- which is growing rapidly and I’m very grateful to my supporters.”

She resides in Brooklyn, New York where she continues to build her brand after growing up with a passion

So much so that she was recognised by one of the biggest retail stores in the United States, ‘Macy’s. They invited Abigail to collaborate with them on their VIP event, where she was able to do makeovers and disclose some of her techniques to Macy’s costumers.

She recently started working as a makeup artist for Love and Hip-Hop break out star and Jamaican dancehall sensation, Grace Hamilton- popularly known as ‘Spice’, who only lets Abigail do her makeup when she’s in New York.

Essequibo business sector spreads joy to hundreds of children HUNDREDS of children’s faces in Region Two were lit up as several companies in the region decided to reach out to them this Christmas. The largest crowd was on Sunday, December 9 at the G&P Jaigobin and Son Supermarket located in Anna Regina. Children, as well as their parents, gathered to witness the lighting up of the tallest Christmas tree in the Region. The event is an annual one and every year he adds more height to the tree.

During the light up hundreds of children gathered to get a glimpse of Claus and his troupe out of Disney Land. The crowd was impressed with the performances of Barney, Dora, Elsa, Anna, Frozen’s Olaf, Spiderman and Santa as they took the stage. The cartoon characters danced with joy as Santa pushed the button to light up the Christmas tree.

On December 7, Alfro Alphonso and Sons had their Christmas tree light up on the fifth floor of the shopping centre in Charity and Santa distributed hundreds of toys and gifts to the Children in Charity and the Pomeroon area. The businessman distributed gifts on two days to the children.

The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI ) Anna Regina Branch held their Children Christmas Party where hundreds of children were hosted. They received toys and gifts from Santa Claus and also had their faces painted. They were involved in games and interacted with the staff.

The Essequibo Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry will also be hosting a Christmas party for 400 children this year.

“Yes, I know ,” her mother said. “Anyway, now we can invite Miss Hannah to have dinner with us on Christmas Day.” Suddenly Angela realized that her first wish had come true. Perhaps she had not imagined the little old lady after all.

Perhaps she would really see the Auntie of the Starlight again.

Angela sat on the front steps waiting for it to get dark.

At last the orange sun melted into the deep blue sky. Carol clapped her hands with excitement while Angela lit the second starlight. The breeze rustled through the leaves of the Christmas Bush as the starlight crackled and sparkled.

And then just as before, there on its tip sat the Auntie of the Starlight.

“Daddy got a job,” said Angela. “Of course he did,” replied the old lady. “Now what is your wish this time?”

And just as Angela thought about the doll in the store window again, she remembered that her mother’s sewing machine was not working. Well, she said to herself, I still have my third wish. I’ll use that for the doll. “If you don’t mind,” she said to the old lady, “I’d li “I don’t mind,” replied the Auntie of the Starlight. “They are your wishes.”

“Okay, then,” said Angela, “I’d like a sewing machine for Mummy.” The old lady tossed her head, showering sparkles of light all over the place. “You may have your wish,” she replied. “Thank you,” said Angela, and just as before, the starlight spluttered and the little old lady disappeared with the last little shimmering lights.

Early next morning, Angela, her mother and Carol delivered the finished clothes to the store. Then they went to buy the food for Christmas Day. They bought some sorrel and ginger in the market to make the sorrel drink; they got sweet potatoes from a lady by the side of the road. Angela’s mother said that even a small ham was too expensive this year, so they bought a nice big chicken instead. She said Miss Hannah would probably bring a small Christmas pudding as usual. It would be a great Christmas after all.

That evening, just as Angela’s mother was crushing the ginger and Angela and Carol were picking the red sorrel, their father came home.

“I have a surprise for you,” he said to Angela’s mother with a big smile on his face. “One of the men at the factory knows a man who sells sewing machines. He will let us have one since I’m working, and I can pay him a little each week from my salary. And meanwhile you will have something to use.”

There was a happy light in her mother’s eyes, and her father’s face shone with pride because once again he could help his family. Angela knew she had used her first two wishes well, and now on Christmas Eve she would make her final wish.

She could not stay still. She kept running out into the yard to look at the sky. Slowly, oh so slowly, it changed from a pale blue to gray streaked with pink. At last it was dark.

The two girls stood in the front yard. Angela took a box of matches from her pocket to light the starlight.

Suddenly Carol said, “Please, Angela, can I hold the starlight this time?” “No, you can’t!” replied Angela quickly.

“You are too little. It might burn you.” “I’m big enough. I’ll be careful,” cried Carol. “I never got a chance to hold one before. Please, Angela, please! Let me hold it for just a little.”

Angela thought about the doll. Then she looked at her sister. Her little body was trembling with excitement and her eyes pleaded for this chance. “All right,” sighed Angela, “ but just for a little. You must give it back to me when I tell you.”

“Yes, I will. Thank you Angela,” Carol whispered. After all, Angela said to herself, it is long enough for both of us to have a turn at holding it. I will still have a chance to see the Auntie of the Starlight.

The starlight burst into glittering lights as Carol held it tightly, her face full of delight. The sparks flew in all directions, piercing the darkness like shooting stars, then disappearing like peenie wallies in the night. “This is the most beautiful starlight!” laughed Carol. “Just look at it, Angela!”

Angela thought that this starlight did look even more brilliant than the others. Then, just as she was about to take it from Carol, the starlight suddenly spluttered, and with a hissing sound the lights all died away. The Christmas breeze was now quite strong and Angela wondered if it had blown out the starlight.

“Is it finished already?” asked Carol anxiously. “It can’t be,” replied Angela sharply, as she took it and looked at it carefully. But the starlight was already black and twisted.

Angela fought back the tears as she struck match after match, trying to light it. But nothing happened. “I’m sorry, Angela,” said Carol softly. “You didn’t get your turn.”

Angela couldn’t bear to make Carol feel sad, so she tried to smile bravely, as she said, “It’s all right. I had two already remember?” “Then you aren’t vexed?” Carol said with relief.

“No, of course not,” Angela replied, as she gave her sister a quick hug. “And this one was especially pretty, just for you.” Carol’s hesitant smile, which became brighter as she realized that it really was all right, made Angela feel that perhaps it was better after all, to have made her little sister happy.

She was very disappointed about the doll but she was determined not to show it, as the two girls got their clothes ready for church on Christmas morning.

The first little rays of daylight were just slipping through the thin curtains at the windows when Angela turned over and rubbed her eyes. She stretched and yawned, and then she felt something at the bottom of her bed. She sat up and rubbed her eyes again; and there, sitting on the old chenille spread, was the doll with the white blouse and the red frilly skirt. I must be dreaming, Angela thought. But as she ran her hand over the tight black curls and the smooth chocolate-coloured face, she knew she was awake. It was not a dream at all.

“Mummy, Daddy!” she called. Carol, who was awake by now, was jumping up and down in her excitement. She had discovered another doll in the folds of the spread. It was a baby doll, just the right size for her.

XIX “Thank you, Mummy and Daddy,” cried Angela as her parents appeared at the door. “How did you know just what I wanted?” “Did you put those dolls there?” their father asked their mother, laughing. “It’s a surprise to me,” replied their mother with a secret smile.

And as Angela hugged her parents, she thought she saw something darting along a shaft of light and out through the window; something as small as a doctor bird, except that there was a flash of red and yellow like bandana cloth.

Dr. Waldron said that as a result of many of the dogs going astray because of explosive noises that caused them to escape, a lot of them end up in mating situations, which result in puppies, who once they survive result in many more stray dogs on the streets.

He noted also that many of the dogs can develop mange (which is a type of disease of the skin caused by parasitic mites); have ticks; have venereal disease from being ‘out of circle’, remarking that generally, the problems are as he termed them, ‘multi-sided’.

“It’s not just the dogs and domestic pets; if you look up into the night sky when these squibs are going off you will see all the birds that were resting flying around- all animals

are affected. I have seen cases of horses stampeding down the East Coast road because of the squibs,” he stated.

GENERATING THE MOST FEAR Many current veterinary studies have concurred with the information offered by Dr. Waldron’s on the dogs’ reaction to fireworks. In fact, a 2013 study by the University of Bristol’s School of Veterinary Sciences found fireworks were the most common trigger for fearful behaviour in dogs. Some of the responses by the dogs included trembling, shaking, hiding, seeking comfort, destruction, urination (on self) and salivation (excessive saliva formed in and around their mouths) and many other reactions.

César Millán Favela, a Mexican-American dog behaviourist with over 25 years of canine experience stated,

Chronicle Pepperpot December 16, 2018 “It is natural for dogs to be afraid of loud noises. The sounds trigger their nervous systems, and they can become anxious or afraid; running away from the noise is a survival instinct.”

He said that to the dog, the experience of fireworks is different than other natural loud noises, like thunder; noting that fireworks are closer to the ground, more vibrant, and are accompanied by sudden booms, flashes and burning smells and dogs experience the world through their senses — nose, eyes, ears, stating that such loud noises can be overwhelming to them.

At the same time, it is suggested that having the dog exercise before the start of the fireworks help. In addition, keeping the dogs indoors and if possible in your presence would also help, especially if you are willing to comfort them in every way possible.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE Meanwhile, Dr. Waldron told the Pepperpot Magazine that his message to members of the public at this time is one of peace and goodwill to all. He noted that while it is illegal to sell the fireworks and the squibs and also to possess them, “The problem is we don’t seem to be able to enforce it or we are a bit lax on enforcement because it is a tradition. So we could only ask people to have fun, to be considerate of other people and of the animals because these devices injure people as well. The initiative had the support of key functionaries of the schools and facility, including Director of the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre (PRHC), Cynthia Massay and other representatives of that facility; and representatives of the Schools’ Feeding Programme from which the beneficiaries were drawn.

Massay confirmed that Charran, who has a close affinity for little children, has had an unbroken relationship with, and has been making financial and other forms of assistance to the centre for the last 20 years. It was out of this initiative that the hosting of children’s parties was birthed.

And commenting on what led him to start a Schools’ Feeding Programme, Charran recalled that one day he was buying fast food for his children and decided to purchase one for a little boy who appeared to be needy. Full of gratitude and excitement, the child thanked him but instead of opening up the bag, tucked it away. When asked why he did not open up and eat the meal, the child replied that he was taking it home to share with his mother and brother who were at home and had nothing to eat.

Charran, out of compassion made purchases for the mother and child at home. Following that experience, he said, he purposed in his heart, never to pass a hungry child by, and soon after, put systems in place to establish the Schools’ Feeding Programme, through which he has been able to assure hundreds of children a hot nutritious meal when at school and host parties for them at Christmas time.

‘Tis the season WE’RE just about a week away from Christmas Day. The fairy lights are already up and Regent Street has begun filling up making it quite difficult to travel around Georgetown without a great deal of patience.

What I’ve always loved about this season is that it seems to bring out the nicest parts of people. I mean, I could be the Grinch all year but the minute it changes to Christmas time, call me Cindy Lou Who. And it’s not just me.

Suddenly, at Christmas time, every person is magnanimous.

You pass the red kettles literally everywhere, and suddenly you don’t mind dropping in the spare change. Or you aren’t mindful to give a ‘lil sumn’ to the Masqueraders- which are, by the way, now found at almost every street corner, traffic light and car park.

It is not just these simple acts of doing something good, though. On a larger scale, there are so many individuals and groups trying to do something this season to take that merry feeling to those who might not necessarily have this feeling. It is impossible for anyone to miss all of the Christmas drives and outreach programmes ongoing.

But what I’ve found is that persons want to do very impactful things, but lack the means to do so. The corporate community is approached, arguably, more than ever during this time and understandably would quickly become very saturated.

With this in mind, many of those non-governmental organisations (NGOs) like the Rotaract Club and Potluck that really try to make a significant impact depend largely on the contributions of civil society.

This year Potluck will be continuing its tradition of giving out ‘care packages’ to homeless persons. The aim is to equip them with sometimes the most basic self-care items because even though these persons are without homes, it should not mean that they cannot take care of themselves adequately.

Then Rotaract Clubs of Georgetown and Georgetown/Central have both endeavoured to share the festivities with children. One club will be targeting children from various orphanages while the other will target the children from Plastic City, on the West Bank of Demerara. The clubs will be giving out gifts to children and fete them for a few hours during the day.

These acts might seem simple enough, but this is all to say- if you can, reach out and give something. And if there isn’t something tangible that you can give, share your time.

Interestingly, an article published in the Guardian UK detailed that the merry ole season of Christmas can actually be a very stressful season for many. Aside from the sheer overwhelmingness of the festivities, it can actually amplify feelings of loneliness and grief. So despite this being a season of joy and peace, the festivities can be a trigger for many

persons due to inherent expectations.

And here’s where the simple act of sharing your time with others shows its brilliance.

Some people might not be able to indulge in the festivities, but just spending time with them goes a far way in reducing the stress the season might bring for them.

Adding to this, I think right now in Guyana, there is a huge volunteer culture that has enveloped many young people and I appreciate that my people are willing to give of their time freely. These persons serve, often without anything in return besides a sense of satisfaction, throughout the year. They give their time to contribute to making some positive impact no matter how minuscule. And really, that is the genuineness that is found at

Christmas time.

For me, there’s nothing more festive and satisfying that giving my service to make something, or someone better. They don’t just call it ‘the season’, it is the season of unrequited kindness. At the end of the season though, it’s back to business as usual. Somewhere in that mix, we’ll find time to help out every now and then. As the spirit is there, maybe we can make the best of it while it lasts. And when it’s all said and done, I hope that some things can persist.

I suppose what I am trying to encourage is that for the season, embrace the ‘niceness’ that it brings and make the most of it- for yourself and for the people around you.

Aiming to make a difference Ayodele Roach “I REALISE that if young people don’t get up and go after what we want, then our problems will not be solved,” said 19-year-old Ayodele Roach.

In fact, at this age, she has confidently illustrated that if youth want a seat at the table, they must actively pursue it because it will not be served to them on a silver platter.

During the recently concluded Local Government Elections (LGEs), she ran as the Proportional Representation (PR) candidate for the Alliance for Change (AFC) political party and was later sworn in as a councillor to the Georgetown Mayor and City Council. She is the youngest person on the council presently.

The young woman related: “Contesting this election was my first step in being the change I wish to see, [which was] to give me the perfect stage to stand on and advocate for youth to get more involved in politics and more involved in controlling their future.”

According to her, the political arena in Guyana is filled with older persons and though they might try to represent all citizens fairly, youth

should be the ones representing youth.

Added to that, she said that she wanted her fellow young people to understand the importance of exercising their democratic right- and then actually exercising their democratic right.

Her sheer love for politics also drove her to direct all her efforts in this regard.

During the LGE campaign trail, she worked tirelessly volunteering and campaigning. “With this experience, I learned the importance of LGEs and the process a political party or independent candidate must complete,” Roach shared. But this was not the first time she has volunteered her time and service. In fact, you could even say that she is obsessed with volunteering.

“My passion for volunteerism is something I love to say I was born with,” she said, but explained that it really developed when in her first year of the Christ Church High School. By Second Form, she had already made her mark and was elected the youngest President of the school’s Interact Club- where she served for three years.

In 2017, she was selected as a Youth Ambassador to represent Guyana on a cultural exchange

visit to the USA for three weeks.

“Being involved from such an early age in representing myself, country and school led to me seeing the need and importance of youth involvement within any nation, especially Guyana,” she recollected. For her, however, these are not mere achievements for her to brag about, but instead, she said: “It served as a stepping stone in becoming the person I am today and the person I want to grow into tomorrow and it helped me to create a passion for helping others.”

And adding to all of this, she recently graduated from St Rose’s High School with an Associates Degree in Law and is a first-year student at the University of Guyana (UG) pursuing her Undergraduate Degree in International Relations.

As Roach will now strive to work as a councillor, in the best interest of the constituents of Georgetown, she said that she will always strive to ensure that she does her best.

“In 2019, I will continue this journey of making Guyana a better place and the journey in fighting for youths to be involved in decision-making by being given seats at the table,” she affirmed.

Creating successful local communities why to save. In the 19th century, African freedmen were able to save from the measly wages they earned under the Apprenticeship System and were able to purchase the abandoned estates and establish the villages.

Today, most people seem to think that money should be used merely to satisfy wants; they must rediscover the wisdom that money is used to generate wealth. They must realise that saving is the deferment of to-day’s satisfaction for tomorrow’s betterment.

Educational and cultural facilities should be continuously upgraded so that the differ-

CONSUMER advocates, like most citizens, have an abiding interest with what happens at National Elections. But they do have a deeper interest with what happens at Local Government Elections (LGEs) since the affairs of Local Government are closer to their day to day lives. Though the turnout at the last Local Government Elections (LGEs) last month was below expectations, the consumer community regard these elections as having positive results, the most important being that the political parties have all declared their vital interest in local affairs and will be showing greater activity in them.

We are happy that the political establishment has pledged themselves to give greater focus to the countryside because modern Western Civilisation is a City Civilisation of which Guyana is a part and the main focus is on the cities and in Guyana’s case, on Georgetown, its capital city. Indeed, in a determinist way, and almost unconsciously, many people from the countryside and interior think of Georgetown as being Guyana. Local Government and Local Government elections (LGEs) are therefore welcome reminders to the population that the countryside and interior are just as important, or even more so than Georgetown.

Before the last Local Government Election (LGEs) took place, several media writers attempted to give the historical background of Local Government in Guyana. And one of the main strands of such writings was that the Village Movement of the 19th century was the genesis of our Local Government.

Emancipation of the plantation slaves was legally declared in 1834 but by the Apprenticeship System, full freedom was delayed for four years until 1838. By the Apprenticeship System, the legally freed slaves were compelled to continue work on the plantations at a small wage for several years only after which they were fully free.

In 1838 when the Apprenticeship System ended, a large number of the former slaves, now freedmen, decided to leave the plantations and try to achieve a life of full freedom and economic independence. Fortunately, at this juncture, a number of plantation owners had decided to abandon their estates since they believed that with Emancipation, the economy of the colony had irretrievably collapsed. They, therefore, tried to sell their estates. The freedmen who were leaving the estates were able to buy these estates by cooperative ventures and were able to create villages.

The first estate which was purchased was Northbrook on the East Coast Demerara.

Eighty-three freedmen banded themselves together and by cooperative effort bought

the estate which they renamed Victoria in honour of Queen Victoria. A village was laid out with streets, house lots, recreational and educational facilities and farmlands. Other estates were purchased and similar villages were established all along the coast. All these villages had some form of government, some rudimentary, some quite sophisticated, and these were regarded as the beginning of Local Government. The Village Movement is regarded as one of the proudest epochs of Guyanese History.

The question is sometimes asked why did the freedmen not drift to Georgetown or New Amsterdam. Putting aside the availability of land, the fundamental reason why they remained on the land as farmers was that the City Civilisation syndrome had not affected Guyana in the earlier years of the 19th century and the freedmen, like the Europeans who lived on their working plantations, saw the countryside as the hub of life and a place where they could create an existence of social and economic well-being. This worldview of the countryside has been lost from modern Guyana.

Government has declared that it will not only revive Local Government but will work towards creating prosperous villages and rural communities and develop higher levels of Education and Cultural Life. The new towns which have been declared are expected to assist in the process of making the countryside as desirable as Georgetown.

Government’s commitment to creating attractive social and economic lives for the country communities is laudable and to try to further such commitment, we would make a few suggestions: In the first place, people in the countryside will have to be convinced of the values of country life as against the values of the City and also to demonstrate that one would be able to earn a comfortable living in country communities. Most important, the new towns which have been declared should each employ a competent City designer to design them before they grow into disorganised slums.

Washington D.C. the capital of the United States was designed by the French town planner, L’Enfant and that is the reason why it is so well ordered a city. The Education System and the media should help in this effort of socialising people as to the virtues of the countryside and break the mystique of the City.

Secondly, Agriculture must be promoted and given financial and technical support and new crops such as fruits and flowers for export should be encouraged and markets should be explored. The same could be done with coconuts and spices such as turmeric.

People should again be taught how and

QUALIFYING HIMSELF Soon enough, he found that he too was developing a fondness for barbering. “I find it’s an easy trade once you get to like it and know it. I actually became a fan of hair cutting, so I went to schooling for it and got a Diploma. I guess the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree because my dad is still barbering and now, I too, like barbering.”

Lloyd recalled that his dad would cut his hair as a child, and that of his brother. “I used to help around the shop to sweep up and so on. As I got older, though, I did other jobs that I could find.”

Lloyd said unknown to his father, he enrolled for an eightweek class at Kevin’s Reflections to learn to be a barber. “I went behind his back to get schooling for barbering. He didn’t know about it until I finished. I just wanted to surprise him and make him feel proud. He made a joke out of it and said I could’ve paid him to teach me.”

Lloyd’s father, who operates his barbershop just outside the ‘Six Head’ gym on Calendar Street, Albouystown already had another barber working with him at the time that Lloyd became interested.

Lloyd’s friend, though, Ryan Massiah was operating a barbershop at Camp and D’Urban Streets and encouraged him to start working at the shop. Incidentally, Ryan had no one working with him at the time and was in need.

He continued working at this barbershop for four years until he decided to open his own shop called “The Barber Shop and Grooming Kit.” The business also features a salon.

“I wanted to become my own businessman and since I have become self-employed, I find it very hard to go back to working with someone. The fact that I enjoy doing it so much now, the money doesn’t even matter sometimes, once I am able to help someone. Because of where I came from, I know people’s situations so I don’t mind helping,” he expressed.

BEING SMART Lloyd said that he did not allow the distractions in his community to define who he would eventually turn out to be.

“It’s just about being smart. I even surprised myself that I came out of that knowing what I wanted. I was never arrested for any offences; the distractions were very strong. Peer pressure, drinking, smoking. At the age of nine, I could have gone to any street dance I wanted to. But I knew that was not what I wanted,” he related.

Having spent 21 years of his life in Albouystown, Lloyd is quite proud and happy about the decisions that he has made. “I am very confident about what I am doing and am willing to provide a very good service to my customers.

It’s the passion of a young entrepreneur.”

A Greener Christmas from the EPA to you

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

CHRISTMAS around the world is a festive time for cheers and gift-giving. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most wasteful times of the year. Throughout the year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would have offered practical advice and solutions on how you as consumers can manage your waste, conserve water and electricity and overall be more environmentally conscious.

The festive season has huge environmental impacts in terms of water and energy usage. There is the release of greenhouse gases and land disturbances caused by the production, consumption and disposal of some of our favourite holiday items. If we can all try to reduce our eco-footprint it would go a far way in protecting our environment.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TIPS FOR THE SEASON Some ways we can make small changes, but have a big impact; • Make at least some of your Christmas decorations.

At the EPA we would have shared ideas about reusing and upcycling throughout the year on several television, radio and outreach programmes. This is a good time to put into practice what you would have learnt and make attractive decorations.

CD’s, cardboards, mason jars, glass and plastic bottles and many other items around the home can be creatively transformed.

• Reuse packaging cartons and shipping materials when you go shopping for new furniture and other household items.

• Remember to unplug Christmas lights in and around the home when going to bed or leaving home. This will help you to conserve energy and most of all, save you some needed cash for after the holidays. It also reduces the risk of fires.

• Look for energy saving lights and if you can use automatic timers to turn on and off. This will not only be good for the environment but also for safety and will give you peace of mind while you’re away.

RAMPS CARNIVAL CHRISTMAS AND OTHER FESTIVITIES I AM listening to my favourite Christmas album while writing this column. I don’t get too excited for the Christmas season but have some precious moments I always find memorable. I attended a few events for the season but the two I had crazy fun at were, the Ramps Logistics Children Party and an event at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation

Centre that provide services for people with physical/ developmental disabilities.

I was not feeling the season before the Ramps party which they hosted for the children for various orphanages and their staff kids. They invited our young singing sensation Jovinski Thorne to join us. From the time we arrived the Christmas

Beyond the Runway with Dr. Sonia Noel ... Inspiring lives through fashion songs that were playing set the mood. As I entered it was hard not to notice the impressive layout with the theme for the season. Children were having a blast with games and food.

They had so many things to choose from the wide variety of treats available. I stopped at the snow cone station first and asked for extra condensed milk on my snow cone! I started walking around eating my cone and absorbing the great energy in the air and chatting with some of the kids and teachers I would have met prior to that day. The various stations that were available were Candy floss, cups cakes, burgers, book corn, hot dogs, Royal Castle and some others. The kids had a bar with water, soda, and many flavours of juices served by cautious attendants. The Ramps staff were serving at most of the stations. What I particularly liked was the way all the snacks were presented. The kids were so excited to have their face painted and were thrilled to be in the bouncy castle and participate in other fun games. When Santa arrived everyone was excited to receive their gifts and have a pic with Santa.

All the children were so engrossed with the happenings that when the calls were made to assemble to go in the buses to take them to respective orphanages, after a while they reluctantly obeyed. I had a joyful smile as I observed their body language when they received their party bag and ice cream and of course, proudly holding their gifts. They were SO happy and in the moment. Congrats to the management and staff of Ramps Logistics for understanding corporate social responsibility. I briefly chatted with Akeel Gittens from the company who was super busy ensuring things were executed according to plan. “It was truly a delightful event to take part in this event and is indicative of Ramps Logistics’ culture of not just corporate excellence but caring for the development of our communities,” Mrs Gittens said. I have seen parties for underprivileged kids but this went the extra mile. They made sure they kids had options even for one day. Air-conditioned buses transported them to and from the venue.

My favourite aunt and the person responsible for my signature braids, Corin Gibson, is an amputee and utilise the services of the rehab centre. Last year she was crowned queen of their Christmas party and this year she invited me to join them and provide some pieces for them to display.

Stetchy One Man band set the pace for this year’s party with his musical selections. Whether they were in wheelchairs, crutches or walkers, they were partying and having a glorious time. The music was so good I found myself singing along even though I can’t sing. I looked at everyone and thought about our lives. We have no idea what is in store for us and that is why we can’t judge people or assume what they are going through. We still have to find a way to celebrate even if we were dealt a hand we did not anticipate. My aunt had a difficult time but she adjusted well when we thought she was going to die. When she shifted her mindset, she realised even with the amputation she has a purpose in life and is intentional about living a full life.

I enjoyed the fashion show and the confidence displayed by most of the people in the room. I learnt the children’s party earlier in the day was also a hit. A big thank you to the management and staff of the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, and may you continue to provide an uplifting environment for those persons who probably need it the most.

Let’s continue to care for someone other than ourselves and family as we are about to enter a new year.

Using ATVs to visit the mines

Another problem related to education in the community is the fact that there is no secondary school. While a facility has recently been constructed to serve as a secondary school, there are no teachers available to teach there. Additionally, those who can afford to pursue their secondary education in other communities also do not have the financial resources to continue onto tertiary education. One of the suggestions that the Food For The Poor team offered to Baramita’s Toshao, Sharmain Rambajue was to engage the government on the matter of starting a scholarship programme specific to people from areas like Baramita, allowing them the opportunity to attend university and then return to the community. “And they can speak Carib and English at the same time and understand the problems of their community,” Vargas explained.

Most of the community’s adults do not possess a formal education. “Some parents don’t realise the importance of education of their children,” Vargas said. The Food For The Poor team advised the community to undertake training sessions with the adults in Baramita. Those sessions would teach participants about the importance of education and provide them with skills they can use to better themselves and their community. Vargas underscored the high level of commitment of Baramita’s teachers and those administrating the school and the community.

Alcoholism is one of Baramita’s major problems. High wine was recently banned in the community to attempt to mitigate the issue. Vargas posited that one of the reasons for the problem is that some residents are unemployed. These persons drink to forget the problems they face, including economic problems. This unhealthy way of coping with problems is then passed on to the younger generation. The ban is just one of multiple solutions the leadership of Baramita is considering.

Access to clean water is another issue facing Baramita.

Vargas explained that water is available during the rainy season but access becomes a problem during the dry season.

Residents mainly drink water from nearby creeks or store water during the rainy season. However, contamination of the water supply is an ongoing problem. Vargas noted that, while there is currently no data on the quality of the water, healthcare personnel at Baramita’s health centre have observed that there are high rates of diarrhoea in the community.

SEEKING SOLUTIONS In an effort to find solutions to Baramita’s problem, the Toshao has been working with numerous government agencies since her election, including the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Civil Defence Commission. She has also worked with UNICEF on a risk management programme for Baramita. The community’s leadership is also working with NGOs on engaging youths in the community who have completed secondary school, as well as working on providing training to residents in areas such as farming and encouraging them to collaborate on and participate in various community projects.

One of the greatest opportunities for Baramita is in the area of touris, according to Vargas. He explained that showcasing the community’s mining sector can draw in tourists. The Food For The Poor team was able to visit the mines using ATVs (all-terrain vehicles). Vargas pointed out that, as a visitor to Baramita, the experience was amazing. So too was the experience witnessing artisanal mining. Before the community can get involved in the area of tourism; however, programmes regarding sustainable tourism are needed. He affirmed, “I will engage people to fly to Baramita in these cargo planes and maybe visit for a weekend. It could be very interesting for them.”

No substitute for brushing MECHANICAL oral hygiene procedures to remove dental plaque, including tooth brushing and flossing unequivocally enhance periodontal health. Gingivitis, although nearly universal among children and adults, is reversible. Periodontitis, a more serious condition,

can lead to irreversible and progressive loss of bone and soft tissue that support teeth. The progressive form is commonly called “gum disease� and is the major cause of tooth loss globally.

In addition to removing bacterial plaque by tooth brushing

and flossing, other interdental aids and methods of subgingival irrigation and professional scaling and polishing are helpful in the prevention and control of periodontal diseases.

Chemotherapeutic agents such as chlorhexidine also have been shown to be beneficial. Effective and efficient use of available methods to prevent and control periodontal diseases depends on commercial availability, provider encouragement, and individual psychosocial and family lifestyle factors.

It has been proven scientifically that an unhygienic mouth can also enhance very deleterious consequences. For example, the use of tobacco products in any form is a major risk factor for cancers of the mouth and throat. Depending on the amount and type of tobacco used, there is a fourfold to fifteenfold increase in the risk of developing these types of cancers. The most common sites are tongue, lip, the floor of the mouth, soft palate, tonsils, salivary glands, and back of the throat.

In the United States, more than 90 per cent of all oral and pharyngeal cancers occur in individuals over age 45. Like many other cancers, risk increases with age. Cigarette smokers who smoke more than one pack a day are 1.5 times are more likely than light smokers to develop oral cancers. Although men are more likely than women to have oral cancer, there is concern that oral cancer in women will rise because of their increased use of tobacco products. In addition, the increase in smokeless tobacco use has been associated with an increase in oral cancers in younger populations.

Alcohol consumption also is associated with oral and mouth cancers. Because heavy smokers frequently also drink alcoholic beverages, separating the effects of the two risk factors is difficult. The risk for oral and throat cancers appears to be higher among those who both smoke and drink alcohol. Never starting is the best approach to preventing oral and mouth cancers. For those who have used or continue to use tobacco, there is a need for early detection of cancerous lesions as early detection is more likely to lead to successful treatment.

While oral cancer generally has a high mortality rate, injury to the mouth and oral structures should also be taken seriously. This can be prevented by taking individual and collective steps to make school, playground, and home environments safe. For example, using mouth protectors during contact sports and wearing a helmet while riding bicycles and motorcycles provide protection against head and mouth injuries, which frequently result in loss of teeth and broken jaws. Appropriate use of seatbelts and child restraints in cars also reduce injuries to the head and mouth. Spousal and/or child abuse that can result in traumatic mouth and face injuries requires preventative interventions both at the interpersonal and societal levels.

The 10 Best TV Shows I saw in 2018 most entertaining, weepiest shows on Netflix.

3) “The Terror” – This show has flown under the radar for most people in Guyana, which is unfortunate because it is one of the coolest, creepiest shows I saw this year. It sinks its hooks deep into your mind and you are unable to do anything but keep watching, episode after episode after episode. Set in the early 1800s, it features a journey of two ships into the

WE ARE still in the second Golden Age of television, and in much the same way this age of fantastically executed television shows coincided with the rise of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” I prophesy that the era will begin to wane with the culmination of the final season of “Game of Thrones” in 2019. In the meantime, however, there are still lots to watch and enjoy so long as the season of television (and online streaming services, such as Netflix) continues to last. This year, I was introduced to quite a few good shows, and even though not all of them emerged in 2018, the list below is still a good compilation of the shows I actually got a chance to watch this year. So, in no particular order and knowing that there are many other good shows I did not see, here are the best shows I watched in 2018.

1) “The Haunting of Hill House” – Tense, atmospheric, and very scary, this TV show is a welcome addition to the horror genre. It focuses on a family who struggles to survive a summer in the titular Hill House, where statues move on their own, freakish storms come out of nowhere, and sinister things live in the hidden basement. With a sumptuous and strong Carla Gugino leading the cast, “The Haunting of Hill House” makes an impression with the stellar acting, the technical achievements and the artistry of the show, as much as the screams it wrangles from us.

2) “Queer Eye” – The premise involves five queer men – each focusing on a specific area (food and wine, fashion, culture and lifestyle, design, grooming) who enter the world of people who are in desperate need of pulling their lives together, whether it’s through needing a boost of confidence, understanding how to use fashion in an individualistic manner in the 21st Century, or even if it’s learning to impress a loved one. The Queer Eye guys swoop in, like gay Mary Poppinses, and help people to become their best selves. What could have been an easily vanity-centric affair was made into one of the

unexplored Arctic. Eventually, the ships become trapped in the ice and the sailors are forced to do whatever it takes to survive.

To compound all of this, a terrible and, perhaps, supernatural beast is present on the ice and it begins to hunt the men. Like I said: very cool and very creepy.

Delays in cases if not checked Could erode public confidence in Justice System THE Caribbean Court of Justice, hearing an appeal from Guyana in 2008 commented on the seriousness of delays in the completion of cases and added, “if such delays are not eliminated, public confidence in the justice system in Guyana will surely be eroded.”

However, the CCJ dismissed the appeal brought by former policeman Vibert Gibson

against his unlawful dismissal by the force.

The CCJ found that the appellant had no appeal as of right within the meaning of Section 6 (d) of the Caribbean Court of Justice Act and the appeal lacked merit in any event.

During the hearing of the appeal, President de la Bastide said, “Before concluding this judgment we feel obliged to comment

on the fact that this case was originally filed in July 1989.

The High Court proceedings were not concluded until November 2004, more than 15 years after the case was filed.

Undoubtedly, there must have been reasons for this but we can think of none that could justify a delay of that order.

If such delays are not eliminated, public confidence in the justice system in Guyana will surely be eroded, President de la BASTIDES had said.

The facts of the case disclosed that by letter of 30 June 1989, the appellant Gibson was discharged with immediate effect from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on the ground that his discharge was desirable in the public interest.

He brought proceedings against the Attorney General (AG) alleging that his removal from the force was unconstitutional null and void and claiming damages for loss of salary pension and gratuity.

He contended that he was entitled to the total compensatory package he would have earned had he remained in the force until he reached the age of retirement, and that the court should make no allowance for the possibility of his mitigating his loss.

In 2004, the High Court found that the appellant had been unlawfully dismissed and awarded damages equivalent to 24 months salary.

The Court of Appeal upheld that judgment, but allowed the appeal to the extent of ordering the State to pay to the appellant the pension to which he was entitled based on his 20 years’ service in the force. The appellant appealed to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

The Court invited submissions from counsel as to whether in all the circumstances the appellant had an appeal as of right within the meaning of Section 6 (d) of the Caribbean Court of Justice Act 2004.

The CCJ held that the appellant had no appeal as of right within the meaning of Section 6 (d) of the Caribbean Court of Justice Act and the appeal lacked merit in any event. In order to file a right of appeal the appellant had to establish that the proceedings were concerned with the exercise of the jurisdiction conferred upon the High Court, relating to redress for the contravention of the provisions of the Constitution for the protection of fundamental rights , in accordance with section 6 (d) . The instant action was one for unlawful dismissal and not one seeking constitutional redress for the infringement of a fundamental right.

The claim was not presented as a breach of a fundamental right, nor could it seriously be suggested that the appellant had a fundamental right to salary and pension, as if he had continued in his post until his attainment of the relevant retirement age. Accordingly, the appeal would be dismissed.

The President added, the facts of this case and the circumstances in which an appeal as of right was filed resemble very closely those in the case of Yasseen v A.G. of Guyana [2008] CCJ 3 (AJ), 72 WIR 317 in which this court delivered a written judgment on 26th March 2008. Adopting the same course we followed in Yasseen’s case, we required counsel for the appellant to provide us with written submissions on the issue of whether the appellant was invited to appeal as of right. Those submissions were filed and having read them, we can see no reason to alter the view we took in Yasseen’s case namely, that there is no right of appeal and that the appeal in any event lacks merit and should be dismissed.

The President added, “We consider that the identical reasoning applies to this case. Accordingly we strike out this appeal and for the same reason we declined to order costs in Yasseen’s case, namely that the respondent played no part in the striking out of the appeal, we would make no order as to costs here.” Other Caribbean Court of Justice judges were Justices Saunders and Bernard.

Set aside a grieving time – this has been very helpful with many of my clients. I ask them to set aside a half hour a day to fully feel the pain of the breakup. Throughout the day, the mind will wander toward it but you can say to yourself for example, ‘deal with it at seven’. Find a comfortable and quiet place to look at pictures, listen to music that brings up memories- anything that makes you feel what happen.

Most people cry for the whole half hour and then they automatically start to see the grieving time decreasing- without even trying to.

If you have social media, unfollow your ex-partner.

This may seem childish but it’s definitely not to be mean.

Out of sight, out of mind is a cliché for a reason. Ask those around you not to bring it to your attention. I feel everyone in Guyana does this -’ey I saw your ex out last night, he was happy or talking to this other person’. This is such a hurtful thing to do to someone. Even if you tell them that their ex looks broken without them, you are hindering their recovery.

Do not become friends with an ex right away. I never get how people do this as it is nearly impossible to become friends immediately after a break-up, please don’t even try.

I know that person was once close to you and will remain very near and dear, but you need to have mentally moved on before even attempting a friendship. It’s common to be curious about what your ex is doing but does it feel good knowing that you are actively contributing to your own pain and slow recovery?

Finally, I hope you all know by now how much better we feel when we maintain a healthy lifestyle - eat well, sleep well, exercise and don’t abuse substances. Incorporating these suggestions will decrease the ache until time heals it.

Do not allow this experience to harden your loving heart.

• Donate: give used items in good condition to persons in need or charitable organisations instead of throwing them out. This will go a far way in reducing waste.

• Make a list: Do not be carried away with all the fancy things you see, make a list, stick to your list and purchase durable items, which can be stored and reused another year.

was very hard to adjust since for most people who migrate, prior education or occupation mean very little. You have to basically start over from scratch. I understood that and was prepared to work hard to build a name for myself all over again,” she said.

She credits her alma mater President’s College for helping her to get this far. “I attended President’s College for six years, where I completed both the CXC and CAPE Exams…I truly believe without a shadow of a doubt that President’s College has played a great part in moulding me into the person I am today.”

Her words of advice to women are, “We should never have one option. There is always something we can fall back on and turn around any situation for the better, just believe in yourself and never give up.”

She continued, “Being a makeup artist is very exciting.

I get to meet people from a lot of different countries. I enjoy listening to their accents and stories about traditional beliefs and basically just life growing up in another country. I hope that one day I will be able to visit all those countries they talk about. I’m planning on visiting all the carnivals around the world doing makeup. My clientele ranges from all over the US and the Caribbean.”

The proud mother and entrepreneur said, “I’m motivated by a lot of things, one of

which is being able to provide for my children. I’m a mother of four and like every mother, they are my heart in human form walking around outside of my body. So, making sure that everything is in order where they are concerned is very important to me. Therefore, I only work on weekends while on weekdays I’m a stay at home mom taking care of their needs dropping them off to school, picking them up, making sure homework is done etc., and that’s like a job in itself.”

She also spoke of what her profession does for not only her but her clients.

“Makeup is my therapy, I get lost in my work. The anticipation of what will be the finished product and the smile on my clients’ faces

You can basically change someone’s whole mood by changing their appearance,” she said. “I’ve had women sit in my chair burdened with the troubles of life and at the end of their appointment it’s like a whole different person.

It’s like the depression just went out the window. This often brings tears of joy to my eyes, just to know the difference a makeup artist can make in someone’s life.” Her ultimate dream is working with ‘A’ list celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Beyonce, “Hopefully, God’s willing, that’s next,” she said.

It presents a period in LGBTQIA+ history that has not been explored in much depth for a very long time, which is ironic considering how much of an impact the world of the underground ball culture and its components, such as voguing, has had on pop culture – particularly in the 21st Century. “Pose” unearths the lives of the LGBTQIA+ community and offers narratives that speak to the community’s struggles, while also highlighting their dreams and hopes. Also, the fashions and costuming in this show are DIVINE! 5) “The Good Place” – Kristen Bell plays a terrible human being who, upon death, is mistakenly transferred to the part of the afterlife known as “The Good Place” instead of “The Bad Place” where she really belongs.

The concept is one that a lot of people can relate to, since, for whatever reason, our bad deeds tend to remain magnified in our minds when compared to the good ones, and the show forces us to confront our own fears about the afterlife: what would we do if we were in the lead character’s shoes? “The Good Place” is a hilarious riff on some possible answers to that question.

6) “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” – I have already discussed at length the many merits of this show in an article for this column. I mean, what’s not to love – there are witches (the good kind and the bad kind), familiars, the undead, a pansexual warlock, the witch’s autonomy as a parallel for modern day feminism, loads and loads of camp, and many callbacks and allusions to familiar books and movies. If there was a show from 2018 that best encapsulated the spirit of what it means to be a millennial, it would be this one. Do not miss!

7) “RuPaul’s Drag Race” & “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” – “Drag Race” is now a pop culture phenomenon and this year we already had two whole seasons of the reality show (with a new season of “All Stars” to come before the year is out!). We were truly blessed with all the charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent we were exposed to this year. There were killer lip-syncs, beautiful costumes, shocking eliminations (I’m looking at you, BenDeLaCreme) and enough tea to fuel memes for another year or so! It was wonderful to be introduced to the newest winner on “Drag Race,” the talented Aquaria. As for “All Stars,” Trixie is okay, but Shangela was robbed!

8) “Westworld” – This show continued on with a new season, expanding on the number of characters, the other parks, and the denseness of a narrative that is justifiably complicated based on how many storylines and characters it caters to. “Westworld” is not only a technological marvel or a piece that showcases stellar acting (talking to you especially, Thandie Newton), but it is also a masterclass in storytelling. The concept of a themed (the Wild West, Shogun, etc.) amusement park filled with human-like robots (called hosts) is a ripe idea for a TV show and the potential continues to be fully utilised by the cast and crew of this one.

9) “The Sinner” – This show stars Jessica Biel as a woman, a happy wife and mother, who commits a heinous crime in the very first episode. What follows is a twisty, drug, religion, and sex-fueled narrative that leads us down a rabbit-hole of the character’s past where we hope to uncover the driving force behind the character’s actions. “The Sinner” is unsettling. There is an underlying feeling of disgust and creepiness that one experiences when watching this show that cannot really be put into words. It might be something that can only be experienced, so go watch it now!

10) “The Innocents” – A love story with a twist, “The Innocents” starts off well enough somewhere in the English countryside with two teenagers, Harry and June, running away from home so they can be together and escape the pressure of their parents.

However, while on the run, they encounter a strange man who tries to kidnap June, and during this encounter June’s sentient and supernatural abilities announce themselves, complicating the couple’s lives as they struggle to understand June’s abilities while remaining hidden from their parents and the man who tried to abduct her. “The Innocents” has action, myth (Norse), science, and many other elements within it, but the thing that makes it pure and worth it is definitely the love (and wonderful chemistry) between the two lead characters.

Mauby

INGREDIENTS

1/2 oz mauby bark small piece dried orange peel 2 pieces of cinnamon stick 3-4 cloves 6 pt. water 2 lb sugar INSTRUCTIONS

Boil mauby bark, orange peel, cinnamon and cloves in 1/2 pint of water for about 10 minutes Cool and mix with remaining water and the sugar.

Brew for about 5 minutes.

Fill bottles and leave for about 2 days.
