The hard-working midwife The sky is the limit for Zina Cornelius

However, after becoming an all-rounder at the Kumaka District Hospital as a result of a shortage of staff, she decided she wanted to do more to become qualified in the medical field.

By Michel Outridge THE sky is the limit for midwife Zina Cornelius who hails from Moruca and who has defied the odds and continues to seek opportunities to enhance her life.

“You can be all you can once you believe in yourself,” this mother of seven said, adding that she doesn’t intend to give up but to make life better for herself and family.

Zina came from humble beginnings and when she was faced with assisting her husband to provide for seven children, she sought employment in her community and

HARD WORK At this point, there was no turning back for Zina who applied for the Health Worker Programme in 1998 and she was successful.

She noted that from 2006 to 2009, when it was just the Medex and herself at the Kumaka District Hospital she used to reside in the compound and practically ran the complex whenever the Medex was away. She stated that that was a very important time in her life and she continued to make use of all the opportunities that came her way. Following her experience, today, Zina is a qualified midwife in her community.

Back then, Zina told the Pepperpot Magazine, what she was doing was quite an achievement because she was the only midwife in her community, and she felt proud of herself given all the hard work she endured to get qualified.

“I worked in all the departments of the

Kumaka District Hospital, even in the pharmacy and I have learnt a lot and one day, it occurred to me that I can become anybody I want and I worked towards that goal,” she said. Zina stated that her journey was not easy but when you like what you do it becomes the driving force for upgrading yourself no matter what difficulties may come your way.

DELIVERING BABIES She related that the Kumaka District Hospital which is located in Region One (Barima-Waini) serves the entire sub-region of about 17,000 residents from 11 satellite areas starting from Santa Rosa, totalling about 13 villages.

The midwife added that only the most serious cases are referred to the Suddie and Charity hospitals. On some days, she said, it is often busy at the Kumaka District Hospital and of course, as one of the senior midwives there, she has had more than her fair share of delivering babies.

The medical professional said that she used to deliver babies at home but now, babies are delivered at the district hospitals in their communities. She recalls the days of visiting patients’ homes when there would be almost 90 births per year in that community.

While there are still many deliveries there, she said that most patients are referred to Suddie and Charity hospitals for varying medical reasons and complications. Other patients are also referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), if

LIFE IN MORUCA Zina said that most residents enjoy the quiet life in her village and earn from smallscale farming of cassava, vegetables and coconuts which they sell at the Kumaka Market.

The midwife said, “We are also into farming where we plant ground provisions and vegetables on a small scale for consumption and for retail whenever there is too much for us.”

She pointed out that the main means of transportation is by road and boat. The village has a nursery and a primary school and the secondary school is located at Kumaka, which is about three and a half miles away.

She added that youths engaged in sport activities but some young people in that community are unemployed and for them to get a good job they have to leave the village. “Most youths do not want to leave their families behind to seek employment elsewhere but the possibility of them getting a job there is very slim,” she said.

The lady with the ‘Midas’ touch ‘Aunty Gloria’, took on a lead role along with a few others to solicit help for the Mahaicony-Perth communities after the 2004-2005 floods. They approached both government and international organisations and eventually received much-needed assistance, which is still benefiting the association and communities today.

This association was formed and gained momentum when, as a result of an unusually heavy downpour of rainfall, coupled with severe flooding, most of their crops and livestock were lost. The major economic activity for many people within these communities is farming.

Farmers had, for many years become accustomed to rainfall patterns that were considered seasonal. However, in the more recent years, farmers have begun to experience a different type of weather pattern due to climate change.

“I have delivered about 300 babies back then when I was the one midwife in the area and about 15 babies per month, but now we do not deliver so many babies because of the referrals to other hospitals,” she said.

She told the Pepperpot Magazine that she became a trained midwife in 2004. Now, with more midwives at the hospital, she said that she is able to work shifts which allow her to manage household chores and tend to her children.

FOURTH GENERATION FARMER “I have been in farming for as long as I can remember, since completing primary school. I woke up seeing farming since my parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents were farmers. In fact, my great grandmother was a rice farmer,” Aunty Gloria said. “Also, I have come from a large family. There were 12 of us, three sisters and nine brothers and I am the eldest.

All of us have been farmers. A few of my siblings are overseas now, but when they were here in Guyana they used to farm too.”

She added that as a result of all the farming being done by her and her family members, even the younger members of the family are now engaged in farming; enjoying it and doing well.

DIVERSIFIED EFFORTS She stated that though the challenge of the 2004-2005 flood did shake them up to a large extent, they were determined to do what they do best, which was to continue farming and also to enjoy the success of it yet again.

The Perth Mahaicony Farmers’ Association, located at Central Mahaicony in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) is made up to include and represent the rural communities within the district. Their main economic activities being, farming which is comprised of rice cultivation, cash crops in large variety, fruits, vegetables, ground provisions, dried coconuts and coconut water, fishing and even hunting. Farmers in these communities are also engaged in large-scale livestock farming of poultry, pig – the swine and bovine species; sheep, goats, cows and donkeys.

The farmers within these communities were therefore encouraged to conquer the climate change effects by redirecting their energies towards the planting of a greater variety of crops while engaging in other agricultural products ‘in order to spread their risk’.

‘Medicine has no boundaries’ Young doctor explains her journey towards achieving her dream career

By Indrawattie Natram HELPING others and reaching out to those in her community was always a top priority for 24-year-old Dr. Sodavie Naraine. Dr. Naraine is the Valedictorian of the 2018 graduating batch of doctors from the Guyana-Cuba Scholarship Programme. She scored 99.75 out of a 100 and was therefore given the Gold Award Certificate, an award that is given only to graduates with a GPA between 4.75 and 5.

Ever since graduating from the Abram Zuil Secondary School, as the best graduating student in the year 2010, the Cullen, Essequibo Coast resident had her eyes on medicine and was lucky to earn herself a scholarship from the Government of Guyana to pursue her dreams in Cuba.

“I was inspired to study medicine because it is one of the careers that doesn’t differentiate between colour, religion, economic status, nationality. Medicine doesn’t have any boundaries to good health, everyone has a right” Dr. Naraine said.

Now working in her dream career, Dr. Naraine said she intends to use her platform to transform the lives of Guyanese. During an interview with Pepperpot Magazine, Dr. Naraine said a good doctor not only treats patients with medication but also instills positive thoughts, confidence and care for their patients.

Having returned to her birthland, Dr Naraine intends to help various communities by offering medical care to those in need. She intends to do regular home visits and also provide medical advice.

Explaining her journey towards her career path, she said that she attended the Escuela

Latinoamericana de Medicina (ELAM) and La Universidad de Ciencias Medicas ‘Faustino Perez Hernandez’ University in Cuba with the intention of becoming a professional doctor. She is presently qualified in general human medicine but intends on specialising in Psychiatry.

She interned at the Suddie Public Hospital and the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital rendering her services to those in need. During her studies, she said that she remained determined and was focused on her studies. Her persistence has made her excel in the field, and during her studies she copped top awards at the scientific forums in Cuba and Guyana.

Some of Dr. Naraine challenges during her studies included the language barrier, adapting to a different culture and being away from her home.

But despite the challenges, Dr. Naraine said she would not trade the experience she gained in Cuba as a medical student for anything.

She, therefore, would like to thank the Government of Guyana, Government of Cuba, her parents and her colleagues for making her dreams come true. The parents of Dr. Naraine, Rohan and Badewattie Naraine, said they are happy to have their daughter back after seven years of her studies and are very happy about their daughter’s success. The parents said that they also had confidence in their daughter’s ability since she was a high flyer throughout her schooling. Dr. Naraine is, therefore, advising young people, especially those who are thinking of pursuing their dreams in medicine, not to give up but to approach with determination. She has also urged youths to focus on their career path and to qualify themselves in something they have a passion for.

The Annual Award Ceremonies are held on the last Wednesday of August at the Brooklyn Borough Hall and are usually attended by elected officials and diplomats. Among the 20 Awardees for 2018 were Calypsonian Roger Hinds aka Young Bill Rogers; Actress Bibi Natasha Khan Azeez; singer Compton “Coody” Hodge; Calypsonian Winfield James; Musician Carlo Lachmansingh; Singer Aubrey Mann; Cultural Enabler, 90-year-old Pandit Ramlall Ji; Artist and Costume Designer Bernard Ramsay; Playwright and cultural journalist, Subraj Singh and Jamaica-based Actor and Theatre Director, Eugene Williams, who had his early theatrical experiences at the Theatre Guild in Kingston, Georgetown.

In the Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism, Holland-based Gaitri Pagrach-Chandra was the First Prize Winner for creating “Kiskidee Days”, which is a community of evocative ceramic sculptures with a Facebook page. With “Kiskadee Days”, Gaitri shares recollections of her childhood in Guyana’s sugar belt. It provided an authentic, informative and witty examination of a Hindu wedding in Guyana.

In his address to the audience at the ceremony, Ambassador Ten-Pow said that “Guyanese culture, broadly speaking, is simply the way of life of the Guyanese people,” and commended the hard-working

executive members of the GCA for their “sustained and exemplary work to showcase and preserve our ‘Guyaneseness’, our rich and multi-ethnic cultural heritage and to encourage inter-generational dialogue about its many manifestations.”

The audience was given samples of the rich musical compositions of Guyana by Young Bill Rogers and Gavin Mendonca. Rogers sang “The Weed Song” which was composed by his father, the legendary Bill Rogers. For those who know that original version of the “Weed Song” in which varying types of ‘bush’ were mentioned, it was well-performed by the son of the great man, last Wednesday night in New York, but with a twist at the end. Included by Young Bill Rogers, was a wellknown American bush - George Bush. That bought the house down.

Gavin Mendonca, accompanied with his own guitar playing, was also very well received by the audience who readily joined in as he sang a medley of popular Guyanese Folk songs, including “Small Days”. Also performing at the ceremony was the Classique Dance Company, which is a group of New York youngsters of Guyanese parents.

During the reception which followed the ceremony, the attendees were entertained with folk music by the Guyana Cultural Association Kwe Kwe Ensemble. Other upcoming annual events by the Guyana Cultural Association of New York are Kwe Kwe Nite, Literary Hang and Family Fun Day, which I will report on next week.

‘A business can play a positive role in the community’ Young entrepreneur working to make a difference

Natalya Thomas is a young entrepreneur who is trying to make a difference by empowering young people.

pot Magazine that she was the Executive Operations Coordinator of Miss World Guyana, as well as a fashion designer, before starting AOne Events. “Passion, determination and many sleepless nights got AOne Events to this point,” Natalya said.

“Ever since I was a child, I loved being creative and bringing people together and making them happy,” she recalled. “I was often given the responsibility of planning or helping my family members plan their events.”

At that point in time, Natalya was not yet sure of the path her life would take.

“But one thing that has been constant throughout my life is my passion for creating unique things that would leave me in awe from time to time,” related Natalya.

She explained that she originally started

AOne Events on a part-time basis as she was still with the Miss World Guyana organisation at the time. She would plan events for family friends and other persons.

After receiving good reviews for the events she had planned, as well as motivation from her mother, family and friends, Natalya decided to branch out and officially to start her own business.

A One Events had its official start in October 2016. Natalya related that the events she plans include birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, retreats, bridal showers, graduations and large and small festivals. She is also notably the originator and director of the popular Kidsfest 592.

Being part of this year’s Scotiabank Vision Achiever Programme Business Plan competition is very meaningful to Natalya. “It’s a great platform to, not only put myself out there, but to be a part of the

great training that ActionCOACH actually provides,” she explained. “I’ve learnt a lot from those classes.” She noted that the classes were held for a two-month period during which she learned much about managing and improving her business overall. “[That is what] I will take away the most from the whole competition, win or lose.”

At the same time, Natalya acknowledged that winning the competition would mean a lot to her as well. She noted that the winnings from the competition would act as a stepping stone to do greater things with AOne Events.

Empowering children is a great part of Natalya’s focus. “I have a great love for children,” she said emphatically. The reduction of poverty is another of her focuses. “I intend to use my business as a support base for families through the Kidsfest initiative,” Natalya stated. “And it’s not just for girls, it’s for children of all ages” she pointed out. Doing so she believes will aid her in accomplishing two long-term goals – her professional goal of creating national, regional and global awareness of her business and her personal goal of assisting families who are less fortunate.

One of the greatest ways to empower children is through education, according to Natalya. “It’s my belief that an education is the key to all successes in life,” she said. She noted that, without an education,

it is more difficult to acquire a proper job and create a successful life for oneself and one’s family. It is very important to have a good education, she said, “so that you can be able to accomplish and work for what you want and be successful in your own right.”

As an entrepreneur, Natalya is keenly aware of the role that a business can play in a community. “A business can play a positive role in the community because then there is job creation and there are opportunities to learn from the business,” she said. “It can be a motivating factor and it can actually help to develop the community because with more traffic coming to that community it can open a market for other small businesses to be developed.”

Natalya has both short term and long term goals in mind for herself and AOne Events. She is currently working on her showroom. “This I believe will lead to an increase in sales in that prospective clients will be given a visual of what their event can possibly have and look like,” she stated. She also noted that she is in the planning phase for next year’s third annual Kidsfest 592. She explained, “For next year it’s set to have more attractions and events to boost awareness of the business and also to generate further cash flow for growth and to help to eradicate poverty in some context.”

A void that cannot be filled Grief-stricken family still grappling with their loss Another brother who was at the time preparing for the NGSA Exams was traumatised and having taken his brother’s death so badly, did not do well at his exams and so his parents made a decision to send him to the home of an elder brother in Berbice where he could get some individual attention and improve his grades. “As a matter of fact it is affecting every body’s performance,” Skeete said.

By Shirley Thomas TEN months after the gruelling death of six-year-old Glenshaun Skeete, killed by a falling goal post on the Plaisance Play Ground, his parents and siblings continue to be consumed by grief with each passing day. The memories are haunting and the pain runs deep, his grief-stricken mother, Stacey Skeete told the Pepperpot Magazine on Wednesday.

“It’s a loss we cannot get over and every day the pain grows sharper...His siblings are asking questions and every time I have to deal with it, it’s like adding salt to a fresh wound,” the grieving mother sobbed. “That he was killed is horrifying enough, but when you think about the way in which he died, heaven forbid.”

The six-year-old Glenshaun Skeete, a student of St. Paul’s Primary School, Plaisance, met his death on September 27, 2017, when he was struck in the back by a falling iron goal post. A post-mortem examination performed

by Pathologist, Dr. Neehaul Singh determined that he died of trauma to the heart.

His mother, who was in her ninth month of pregnancy at the time, became hysterical and inconsolable on receiving the news, even as her husband and others tried to calm her.

About one week later (on October 5), Stacey gave birth to a baby girl who is now 10 months old, but even though she cherishes her newborn, the death of Glenshaun has created a void that cannot be filled, she lamented.

The Skeetes are laying the blame for the death of their child squarely on his school which had taken him to the ground to take part in practice for school sports. On being told of the upcoming event, both parents insisted that he should not take part and that information was communicated to the teacher.

However, the teacher allegedly threatened to flog him if he did not take part, and so, out of fear he joined the rest of the class and proceeded to the playground. It was while there that he met his demise.

The parents are now seeking justice for the loss of their child. They claim that even though the Ministry of Education paid for the burial of the child, they are still demanding justice, particularly since she claims that she

has been given the ‘royal run-around’ and was treated shabbily on her visits to the ministry in an attempt to speak with the competent authorities. She said she was made to write a letter to which she has still not received a reply.

The Pepperpot Magazine was unable to reach an education official for a comment.

The child was buried on October 3, at Clay Brick Road, Plaisance after a moving funeral service at the Plaisance Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Skeete is adamant that had the child been killed while under her watch, the Child Protection Agency (CPA) would have taken away the other siblings from her.

“I am insisting that I have not received any justice for my child’s death. They took my child out of school without my consent and now they are not telling me anything.

I want justice for my child,” the distraught mother pleaded.

Skeete is a housewife who does not earn an income and has more than a fair share of trials with which to contend, and says she feels it is unfair that she should be going through such trials.

“We all miss my son; he was such a loving child. Throughout my pregnancy, he would get up early every morning and pick cherries or whatever fruits in season and make juice for me. And every day he would pick a flower and bring it for me. That was the kind of child I’ve lost, so it’s not easy to get over his death,” Stacey said.

Meanwhile, being born and brought up into a close-knit family, the siblings have also been taking their brother’s death badly. “Is every now and then I have to contend with somebody sobbing in a corner of the house or somewhere in the yard. Just a few nights ago, his brother Glenkacia woke up crying and related that his heart continues burning for his brother,” she said.

But what was even more painful, the grief-stricken mother said, was when fouryear-old Jewel, apparently in desperation said to her mother: “Mommy, why you don’t let me, you, baby (10 months), Glenkacia (8) , Tequan 12, and Tyrece (14) go over at the playground and let the goal post fall ‘pon we, then we gon all go to heaven and meet Glensaun there and we gon all be happy.”

By Svetlana Marshall MANY Lindeners had grown accustomed to the thick chemical-filled dust particles that emanate from the processing chimneys called kilns at the bauxite plant situated in Mackenzie, Linden.

Though the ‘bauxite dust’, as it is commonly called, had long been linked to the rise in respiratory illnesses in the mining town, in the eyes of some, it was a necessary evil as

the Bauxite Plant to this day provides a stable source of income for many Lindeners.

But for young Nkofi Hodge, the situation was mind-boggling. Before Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Incorporated (BMGGI) could have installed two dust-collectors at the bauxite plant, many of his relatives had already been diagnosed with Asthma.

nurse not forgetting her roots

Even as she excels abroad

By M Margaret Burke LYNETTE Richards-Lorde is one of those persons who have never forgotten her home-country Guyana regardless of the fact that she has always found herself immersed in activities in the United Kingdom, a place she has called her home for nearly 60 years.

“I was born at 47 Palm Street, Werk-enRust, Georgetown to loving Christian parents.

My father, John Richards, was the Manager for Bourda Market and my mother, Beatrice Dora Richards was a dress designer and seamstress,” Lorde told the Pepperpot Magazine.

She explained that in her family she had one older sister, Nan and two brothers - Owen and Vincent. Her parents, she said were keen on enabling their children to have a good education and also provided them opportunities to take music and art lessons. For music, Lorde said that she attained a Grade Four pianoforte and for art, she was able to do paintings that she exhibited and sold.

THREE CHOICES Lorde said that her head teacher told the students that there were only three choices of careers available after senior Cambridge.

The three choices were nursing, teaching or the civil service. She said that she wanted to do nursing in Guyana but the waiting list was long.

“I decided to work as a civil servant with the Ministry of Health in Brickdam and at the Georgetown Hospital as a secretary to the Radiographer. This was after I had completed my high school education at Tutorial High School and art education at Queen’s College with E.R.Burrowes as her tutor,” she stated.

SAILED ON ORANJESTAD Lorde told the Pepperpot Magazine that her father suggested that as she was only 19 years of age at the time, she should save up her money and take her sister with her to the United Kingdom.

“I did just that; I saved up my fare – £100, which was $480 Guyanese dollars in 1959 and we travelled together to England on the Oranjestad in February 1959. We sailed from Georgetown and arrived in the heart of the English winter three weeks later at Plymouth.

It was a wonderful experience, seeing places such as Surinam, Trinidad and Madeira on our way to England,” she said.

She said that her sister was accepted to work as a nursing assistant at Oxford, and she was accepted for training as a state registered nurse (SRN) in Taunton and Somerset Hospital. “My main aim was to become a midwife, my father’s dream. I wanted to qualify as a nurse-midwife and return home after five years.”

STATE REGISTERED NURSE At the completion of my State Registered Nurse training, Lorde was awarded the prize for the best practical nurse of the year (1962) and went to Cheltenham and to Birmingham to train as a midwife in the hospital and the community. “On successfully completing my formal training I returned home to Guyana to see my parents and if possible to work there. There

were some political problems at the time and my father advised me to return to the UK and come back later. On return, I got married and my daughter was born the following year.”

Lorde told of her experiences as a district midwife; training as a clinical teacher to student midwives in the community; and as a Nursing Officer responsible for all antenatal and gynecology services and staff at the Greenwich District Hospital. She further worked as the Senior Nursing Officer, in charge of three hospitals, the Weir, the South London Hospital for Women, and the St George’s maternity unit.

DIVISIONAL NURSING OFFICER “After six months in the post of Senior Nursing Officer, my immediate boss informed me she was leaving her post as Divisional Nursing officer, the top Midwifery post in the Wandsworth Health Authority,” she said. “I never expected to be considered for this post, but the health authority told me they were pleased with the way I worked and I should apply for the post. I applied, was interviewed and I was appointed. I then became the adviser on midwifery services to the health authority and supervisor of all midwives working in Wandsworth in 1979.”

Lorde said that she was also appointed as a director for Maternity Alliance, UK, an organisation which advised the UK government’s select committee on midwifery services and care.

CONTINUITY OF CARE Later, Lorde was introduced to the subject of ‘Continuity of care’ for mothers; a suggestion that was accepted and adopted as a good care model for maternity services.

At the same time, she became chairman for the association of supervisors of midwives in 1989 for the south-east region of UK. She said that she then became the first nurse-midwife to be appointed to the general manager responsible for medical, nursing, clerical and technical staff. In so doing, she was able to introduce effective care for all general, midwifery and all children services.

After a successful career, Lorde took early retirement in 1992.

VOLUNTARY WORK The experienced health worker was one of the founder members and chairman of the Association of Guyanese Nurses and Allied Professionals (AGNAP) that was formed in the UK in 1989.

“We felt we were in a position to give our services and resources to our home. We are now in our 30th year, and over the years we have provided training and helped develop services such as cancer care, sickle cell and thalassaemia, audiology services and palliative. We also supplied theatre instruments, walking frames and setting children’s library in hospital,” she posited.

She further explained that from 1993 to 2005 she undertook training as children’s advocate with children’s organisations and also worked as an advocate for children who lived in Homes and represented them in schools and in courts, giving them a voice in society.

“It was once rated as one of the best programmes in those times. Earlier and presently it is the only such programme aired in Guyana,” she explained.

Sandra has a great passion to help young people. In her field of Psychology, she deals with a variety of cases including drugs/alcohol, rape and abuse.

The television show motivates students, empowers entrepreneurs, helps young people to become creative, innovative and deals with psychological issues. It engages everyone to become positive change agents.

Sandra is heavily involved in community development projects as a peace ambassador and founder of the Youth and Women Empowerment Movement Guyana. She is always looking at ways to make a difference and impact the lives of the future generation more positively by stimulating their minds.

As a result, she decided to re-launch the “Youths of Today” programme in March 2017 on the National Television Network Cable 69/ Channel 18. The programme previously went off the air in 2001.

Her biggest challenge is seeking sponsors to keep the show on the air and she is determined to do so. She is hoping that the business community will give her the help she needs to ensure quality programming stays on the air.

In addition to good reviews, young individuals coming on the show to share their life experiences and give guid-

After interviewing so many youths over the years she believes, “the biggest problem young people are facing within today’s society [involve] psychological issues. For example, in my counselling capacity and the work I do with my NGO I have dealt with numerous young people who are suffering from profound depression, stress, anxiety, sleeping and eating problems, phobia and fear. They lack the motivation to do things and to understand their unique purpose on Earth,” she said.

She believes that young people need to qualify themselves professionally in areas such as Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering in order to be ready for new interventions and development. “In addition, they need to develop their cognitive ability at such a standard that they can think out of the box. Clean and polish

I AM sure that most of my fellow dentists when they meet a friend often hear, “By the way Doc, I have to come in and see you for a cleaning.” Those who are lucky to still be in the possession of their natural teeth should be intelligent enough to maintain their good fortune by having prophylaxis (cleaning) done at least once every three months. The word prophylaxis means prevention.

Mind you, cleaning does not whiten

inflammation. The supragingival (which is visible above the gum line) deposits are easily removed. Subgingival calculus requires the placing of the instruments below the gingival margin. Scalers are used on the crown of a root to scrape off the hard calculus (tartar) while curettes of an ultrasonic machine fit below the crest.

Root planing is the removal of calculus and “root roughness” from the surface of the tooth. The goal is to leave a smooth

teeth; all it does is to remove plaque, calculus and extraneous stains such as nicotine deposits. If cleaning is not done, persons may suffer from periodontal (gum) disease despite regular and thorough brushing with flossing. These preventative measures cannot guarantee the absolute freedom from any dental affliction because direct vision and objective procedures are essential.

What patients refer to as “clean and polish” clinically means to clean the teeth and polish the fillings. Scaling, root planing and curettage (scraping diseased gums) have been the basic procedures in the periodontal therapy long before periodontics was recognised as a speciality of dentists. Exactly, what are the indications, contradictions and expectations of these modalities of treatment?

The periodontal lesion consists of a pocket. The tooth aspect of this pocket is the dentin and cementum of the root. The soft tissue aspect is comprised of an epithelial lining and connective tissue.When observed under a microscope, the soft tissue displays a chronic inflammatory lesion. In other words, certain types of cells invade the gum manifesting breakdown products as well as a sign of repair. The pocket deepens in response to this chronic inflammatory process. The atypical migration (penetration along the roots) of the attachment results in a deep sulcus (grove).

Prophylaxis includes the removal of dental plaque, calculus and stains, thereby eliminating all the factors causing the

glasslike surface. This accomplishes the removal of necrotic cementum and dentin, bacterial products and endotoxins (poisons) in the decayed cementum. Curettage has a minimal effect on the fibrous or firm gingival pockets. However, in the case of spongy gums, the inner pocket lining is scraped away. The more bleeding that occurs in the process, the better the results. Deep, narrow pockets will not shrink and are difficult to scale due to the adjacent soft tissue walls which are firmly attached. Such areas are often seen in the upper anterior region.

The most desirable outcomes to curettage, therefore, are regeneration and reattachment. Unfortunately, epithelial adaption does not create a stable result.

Healing of the pocket may occur in three different ways: regeneration, reattachment and epithelial adaption. Regeneration is the growth of new tissues. Young cells develop into specialised tissues. Regeneration is the formation of new periodontal ligament and new cementum with the attachment of gingival epithelium to tooth surface denuded of disease. Epithelial adaption is close apposition of gingival epithelium to the tooth surface. This is not firmly attached to the root surface. A probe (dental instrument) will not pass into the pocket, but breakdown can occur with the first insult from plaque and calculus. Generally, there can never be a complete recovery from moderate to severe periodontal disease. Once the alveolar bone is destroyed in the process of the ailment, naturally, there is inadequate support for the

tooth and it now becomes shaky. Depending on the degree of looseness extraction may be the only solution.

In some severe cases, more than one cleaning sessions is required to achieve

the desired result. It is obvious that on a clinical level, scaling, root planing and curettage are interrelated and necessary for the healing of specific types of periodontal lesions.

When the Pepperpot Magazine visited the district recently, it found that the diversification efforts, which the farmers were being encouraged to adopt, had already begun to show much success. In fact, there are numerous adjustments that were made over the years that have proven useful to the farmers. And, it was disclosed that though there were challenges in the early stages of production and productivity, this did not discourage the farmers, who are now experiencing higher levels of value-added profitability. At the same time farmers are quite comfortable with the adapted changes they had to make.

HAM AND SAUSAGE PRODUCTS EXCEL Pig farming, for example, has been singled out for the end-products of pork, ham and sausages. In fact, the feedback received by the Pepperpot Magazine told of the excellent quality of the ham and sausages being produced in the Perth/ Mahaicony district by Aunty Gloria, one of its founder members.

She is said to be the lady with the ‘Midas touch’, producing some of the very best ham and sausages that one can ever purchase locally. However, she told the Pepperpot Magazine, that all she did was to learn well and then she applied her knowledge and skill in the making of the ham and sausages with love and care.

Five members of the association benefited from a training programme under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Agriculture READ project. The activity specifically sought to train farmers in basic processing practices that allowed them to possess the skill of producing hams and various types of flavoured pork sausages. The aim of which was to enable the farmers to remain in the swine industry through the extension of the value chain of activities for pork, allowing them to remain competitive.

Aunty Gloria said it started when the members of the executive of the group sought and got help from the Rural Development Specialist of IICA, who then encouraged the farmers to implement value-added activities, especially for the pork and pork products. This initiative, she said, caused them to redirect their actions towards interior locations where miners utilised the prepared pickled pork product. Additionally, they were advised to further diversify

the pork product, looking at the areas of hams and sausages production.

“The commendation should, therefore, go to Dr. Aubrey Mendonca, Associate Professor, Food Safety and Microbiology from Iowa State University for the value-added workshop and training he offered, through the Ministry of Agriculture’s READ project in the making of these products. It was free and all he wanted to do was to give back to Guyana, the country of his birth. He showed us what we needed to know in order to be successful in the making of ham and sausages and today I am continuing to refine my product,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the small business start-up mechanisms, project management and market support actions were taught to the same set of members by Annette Mendonca. Aunty Gloria informed that at the same time the Sustainable Rural Development Specialist conducted the logistics of the training and was also involved in facilitating training in sanitation and personal hygiene among other areas.

GIVE BACK AFTER TRAINING Aunty Gloria told the Pepperpot Magazine that she will always continue in her drive to ensure success, not only for herself but also for every member of the group, as well as the widespread communities as a whole. She said that much was given to them as members of the Mahaicony-Perth Farmers’ Association that they too see the need to give back – to the communities, as well as to the country as a whole.

She said that the association experimented with and presented the market the different flavours of ham and sausages, which were all received well. Additionally, through the READ project the ham and sausage products receive label bar codes, are placed in supermarkets and are easily competing with the imported brands.

The Pepperpot Magazine was informed that the training in value-added production was executed in the same manner and under the same standard as it is being done at the Iowa State University Food Science Department. Are we heading back to school?

TOMORROW, September 3, schools across Guyana will reopen after a twomonth break. It is the start of the new term and the new academic year but with all that has happened over the past few weeks, are we really heading back to school?

The Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) are at an impasse vis a vis negotiating the demands for teachers or at least moving the process along.

At least up to Thursday, when I wrote this column, the strike was still on. In fact, coming out of the meeting with the Department of Labour and the Ministry of Education just a few hours earlier, members of the Union affirmed that the strike was continuing.

Now, for the first time, for as long as I have known myself, I am not going to put on my school uniform and show up to my school for the new term and that saddens me. But what saddens me more is that people- rather, decision makers-would leverage children and their education to negotiate their demands and their solutions to these demands.

Don’t get me wrong, I personally do not believe that the 40 per cent being demanded is too high, but I will con-

cede that I am ignorant to government finances and the capabilities of the nation’s purse.

But for me, teachers do deserve the increase.

I’ve had teachers who have stayed back into the afternoons to give my classmates and I extra lessons to fix our grammar, pro bono.

I’ve had teachers who worked through an entire syllabus with me, through their lunch break, just because I couldn’t understand organic chemistry the first few times. I’ve had teachers who started classes at 07:30 hrs, three days a week to accommodate conflicting schedules and my tendencies to get full marks on my IAs. I might be biased because in retrospect it seems as though I had fantastic teachers, but coming back to the point on hand, I am just disappointed that the thought of gambling with children’s education could even arise-utterly disappointed.

Ms. Fraser, a very vocal parent at Queen’s College said it best when she spoke to Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, during her visit to the school. For Fraser, it isn’t a matter of siding with the government because there is cognisance that the increase cannot be afforded nor is it a matter of siding with the

teachers because they deserve the increase. It is about the children who need to complete the curriculum in a specific time. And what about the children who have to sit the National and Regional examinations? The ones that need to get their SBAs and IAs done as soon as possible?

And to think, there is a whole (A WHOLE!) contingency plan which seeks to tap retired teachers and students from the Cyril Potter College of Education, to teach children during this strike.

While I’m glad that there’s a backup plan in place, based on what I know of my own school, Ms. Fraser said it best again: “You send a teacher from Cyril Potter’s College to First Form Queens’ College, the children will chew them up.”

Chief Education Officer (CEO) Marcel Hutson, on the other hand, told the Guyana Chronicle recently: “It is so important for our children to receive the best possible education and at the MoE we are keen in ensuring that systems are in place so that our children can be taught and taught properly.”

With this in mind, how can either side even fathom that children will in any way re-

ceive the best possible education with a strike in place or with dissatisfied teachers forced to mould the minds of children in overpopulated classrooms and limited resources?

The argument is out there that maybe not all teachers go beyond their call of duty and maybe few of them only teach the bare minimum because that is all that is required to take home their salary at the end of the month. I don’t know what is the correct counterargument to that, but I do know that teachers, in the public system especially, have a myriad of issues to contend with and they surmount these daily. And teachers are the ones who mould the minds of the next generations.

And I still remember what it’s like to prepare weeks in advance to start out at school on the first school day in September. It isn’t a day that should be tainted in any negativity. So whether the strike is still on or not when you read this, understand that my concerns lie with the students, the hardworking teachers and then the government. In that order. Let’s not think about gambling with children’s education again.

Living life, giving service to humanity Deondra Wishart SINGLE parent families are widespread all across the globe and often times the children are the ones who are most affected from such a circumstance.

But this 27-year-old overachiever is a proud product of a single parent family and gives all credit to her mom who taught her all the values needed to become the successful woman that she is today.

Meet Deondra Alicia Veronica Wishart, the second of her parent’s seven children. Deondra attended Liana Nursery School, Sacred Heart Primary and St. Joseph High where she attained nine subjects at CXC examinations in 2007. She later started at the University of Guyana in 2012 reading for her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. She graduated the University in 2017 with her degree passing with Credit and is currently pursuing a Diploma in Human Resources Management.

Deondra said she grew up with her mother, who was a single parent at that time and it was from this humble beginning that she gained her self-effacing and contented personality.

She shared that growing up with a single parent was not easy but it was because of her upbringing and knowing how it feels to have little and not have the luxuries of others around her, that she decided that she must try her best to give back to the less fortunate.

This early passion for “giving back” led Deondra to the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Guyana, of which she was introduced in 2010.

After her first meeting, Deondra decided that that was the place for her. She became a member in February, 2011 and since then has served JCI Guyana as Secretary/ Treasurer – 2011, President – 2012, Immediate Past President - 2013/2014 and Legal Counsel – 2016.

This young woman propelled herself into a national humanitarian and served on JCI West Indies National Board as National Public Relations Officer – 2014, National Vice President responsible for Training of all West Indies states and assigned to JCI Barbados – 2017, and National Vice President Internal - Assigned to the states of JCI Antigua and JCI St. Vincent – 2018. Apart from serving as a humanitarian, Deondra has also been employed with Banks DIH Limited for the last eight years working within the Engineering Department.

It is her dream to become a certified Human Resources Personnel, since she enjoys working with youths and dedicates her time to help make the society that she lives in a better one.

She is passionate about helping youths achieve their goals and be active citizens in their societies.

Living by JCI’s creed as her guide, with her favourite line being, “Service to Humanity is the best Work of Life”, caused her to be actively involved in the advancement of youths in Guyana and as such, she was recently awarded with a National Youth Award from the Ministry of the Presidency - Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sports.

“My passion is to create a world where youths can express themselves freely and be able to shape their future for the better,” she said.

‘DAYS LIKE DESE’

Season Two to air in September ‘DAYS LIKE DESE’ a new sitcom aired on local television channels NCN11, NTN69, Cable 26 (Berbice) and MTV69 was initially launched with a ‘pilot’ episode in May 2017.

Episodes one to six in Season One were aired from June to November 2017.

There was a red carpet event on Friday June 29 at the National Cultural Centre prior to the airing of Episode one.

Season two consists of six episodes and will begin airing from September 6 and continues until the end of November. Two episodes will be aired per month on eight channels. Each episode will enjoy two airings on each channel.

Why do people drink alcohol?

AS WE discussed last week, Guyanese- some would argue too many of us- consume alcohol on a regular basis. It made me wonder whether people ever categorically questioned why. There are various reasons why alcohol consumption is high – some in our control and others not.

Today I would like to go through all the potential risk factors for both alcohol use and abuse; meaning what makes us want to drink and potentially unable to stop. If you think about the common risk factors for both use and abuse, it’s not surprising that we have such high consumption here in Guyana.

There are a variety of physical, biological, psychological, social and environmental reasons why people may begin to drink and continue drinking alcohol.

PHYSICAL Alcohol is a depressant drug which means it slows down the functioning of our central nervous system and therefore does initially provide a nice, calming and even euphoric feeling. This, however, as most of us know, is short lived.

Some people drink simply because they like the taste and therefore prefer it over other beverages.

BIOLOGICAL A family history of substance abuse makes one more likely to develop the habit themselves. Studies show that one is up to 4 times more likely to use or become addicted to a substance if a close relative (grandparent, parent, sibling, cousin) has been or is currently using. The genetic component that contributes to drug abuse runs deep and is difficult to fully understand.

Mainly because it is not a single gene but rather scientists have found over 50 genes passed on that can impact whether we drink or become addicted.

Additionally, we inherit many personality characteristics through genetics. Some people drink because they are outgoing and enjoy those social situations while others are extremely shy and may drink to reduce their discomfort – both personalities significantly determined by genetics.

PSYCHOLOGICAL Those who have psychological distress or any mental health illness are more likely to use and abuse alcohol and other drugs. Psychological distress includes high-stress levels, any form of abuse or neglect, low self-esteem as well as little to no support for any of the aforementioned.

Those diagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder etc. are also more likely to use substances as self-medication. Anyone who has ever experienced anxiety knows that alcohol can temporarily help to feel comfortable. However, I think most people know that when they use substances to cope with their stress, this unhealthy method of coping brings on a whole range of other issues.

SOCIAL I think most believe that only children are victims of peer pressure but anyone who has ever gone to any social gathering in Guyana should be able to tell you different. Peer pressure is actually one of the most common reasons for drinking alcohol in general. Many people drink because they want to fit in or to avoid the ridicule that typically comes with not drinking.

Others drink simply for curiosity or the want to experiment.

Others, as an act of rebellion because they are not allowed or may not be of legal age to do so. Some people use simply because of good marketing strategies implemented by alcohol companies. I know people who started drinking Stag Beer just because it is advertised as a “Man’s Beer”.

I think the biggest issue when it comes to alcohol is the social norm and acceptance within our society. People are almost expected to drink and it’s weird if they don’t. Alcohol is glamorised and associated with both celebration and mourning- it is a normal part of any occasion. Would you believe that even the job you have may make you more likely to drink alcohol? If the job is highly stressful, has a high risk of injury or even disliked, the individual is more likely to drink alcohol.

Finally, past social experiences with alcohol will determine the amount that people drink in the future. Either good or bad experiences shape an individual’s view, value, expectation and therefore possible repetition.

ENVIRONMENTAL Our environment also greatly influences our consumption in a multitude of ways.

Exposure to alcohol, easy and common access to alcohol, affordable alcohol all make society more likely to have high consumption- all which are present and relevant in Guyana.

People are more likely to drink if they have people drinking around them. Children are more likely to drink if they simply grew up in a house that contained alcohol.

I want everyone to remember two things. No one factor means that you will possibly end up abusing alcohol. Secondly, while we cannot control what our specific risk factors for alcohol use are, we can definitely control our consumption. Despite everything, it still is a personal choice to say yes or no. It is within our control to stop when we have had enough. The best thing to do is recognise (from the factors above) what specifically influences the amount of alcohol you drink. Identify, accept and then challenge them.

Bursary Award of $40,000, a backpack and a gift voucher from Metro Stationery and Computer Supplies. James, who hails from Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice) will be expected to maintain a minimum of 70 percent in her performance in order to receive the bursary for the new school term.

The girl’s mother explained that the scholarship will be a great help financially, especially since transportation for her daughter alone will be a hefty sum every month, given that she will be required to travel from Linden to Georgetown daily to get to school.

“I am thankful to God for her being chosen because it will be a great help. Having to find $20,000 a month for transportation alone when the month comes is nothing easy and that is just one aspect. There are still other things to be done. I wish that Pieces and Things will be blessed not because they supported my daughter but because they are indeed doing their part in terms of giving back,” Barrow said. “So I pray that this business will continue to succeed and that the lord will continue to bless Miss King that she will keep doing what she has to do to play her small part in society.”

Speaking with the Pepperpot Magazine, King explained that this is just the beginning for ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ and that she has lots more in store. In fact, she explained that the launch of the organisation was a long time in the making- it just took some courage to get started.

“About two years ago I was speaking with a friend upon realising the reach that Pieces and Things has and coupled with that reach there is a personal touch and a story behind it, so we also have some amount of influence and I wanted to do something with that influence. So more than just launching a charity, I decided to embark on a mission called ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ and sponsoring this student is the first project of the charity. I wanted to do something that was long lasting; I wanted impact for the organisation,” she said.

She explained that despite naysayers, it was the words of motivation from persons close to her that really made her feel worthy enough to be in a position to help others.

Among those motivators was Avia Lindie of Metro Stationery and Computer Supplies, who- after also hearing about King’s intention to sponsor a student- pledged support on behalf of Metro to also donate stationery.

“I had so many women who volunteered to be mentors of these little girls so now that we have started we have so many things already lined up; so many plans for projects within the very near future. This particular venture we only provided funding for one child and next year if we could get more that would be awesome,” Kings aid.

Among the planned ventures include bringing awareness to mental health, clothing drives and other initiatives aimed at helping women and girls. King expressed her strong belief that it is important to empower young girls due to the double standards in society.

“As a young woman, you are held at these ridiculous standards where your mistakes are held against you and when it comes to your future endeavours and dreams, there is a limit or cap put on them. You are told that you must be bold but when you are bold you come across as abrasive.

It is just a level of double standard that puts a pressure on who we are when it comes to our development as young women,” she said. “So empowering young girls comes from real women sharing their real stories because we have been taught to hide our blunders and when you get to a certain level everyone feels as though it was a peachy walk.

And we turn around as older women and seemingly look down on young girls, and I believe if we can be more open with who we are and more truthful on how we got to where we are despite going through the same struggles, then I think young girls will feel more comfortable and with that burden of self-doubt and constraint being lifted, to know that you can make mistakes and still carry on. I think that will carry our girls even further than we are today.”

King said that she feels honoured to be in a position where she can pledge funding to a young girl over the next five years. She stated that she will ensure that she puts things in place so that the scholarship can be honoured even if the unforeseen occurs.

“It is a special feeling to give back firmly. More than just giving money or a bursary I will be involved, with this parent’s permission, in this child’s life and that’s what My Sisters Keeper is all about,” she said. King explained that it is thanks to strong women in her own life that have made her feel that she can pledge such support in the lives of other young women and she expressed the hope that in some little way, this will be able to make an impact.

CHILD SEX ABUSE AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

OUR offering today relates to the sex scandals which have touched the Catholic Church over the last two weeks. Such scandals have been heard over the last several years but the impact of them has now become more troublous. Cardinal Carlo Maria Vigano, one of the senior members of the Vatican has publicly called upon His Holiness the Pope to resign over the issue, the first time in the 2000 years of church history that such a thing had occurred. As consumer advocates, our Catholic supporters have asked us to make a statement on the issue.

The issue is simply that over long periods a few hundred perverted priests have sexually abused young boys in various countries and these paedophiles were allowed to continue their nefarious activities because the church administration was too laid back and did not energetically punish or expel them from the church in good time.

The effects of these scandals have been very negative. They have shaken the faith and trust of many Catholics in the priesthood and have given a free rein to those whose profession is to disparage and abuse the Catholic Church. Many of these abusers and critics of the church speak as if the end of the church were nigh. The same kinds of predictions were made in the 16th century when the Lutheran schism appeared but the church rode them over, survived and grew stronger.

His Holiness the Pope recently visited the United States and Ireland. He contritely apologised to those who had suffered and he himself suffered much for the misdeeds of the paedophile priests.

The Catholic Church is by far the largest Christian denomination numbering 1.2 billion and there are scores of thousands of dedicated and devoted priests who live up to their vows and continue to make human life brighter and happier. The priests and the church do a vast amount of social and humanitarian work worldwide. An example of this is where the sight of Catholic nuns and priests by immigrants from Africa trying to get to Europe bring them hope that they would receive a meal and be protected from the harshness of the secular authorities who tend to regard them as lawbreakers and criminals.

Millions of children are taught in Catholic schools every day and Catholic hospitals serve millions more. In the big cities of the

developed and developing world, the church provides the wherewithal of life to millions each day. Mother Theresa and her nuns in Kolkutta, are one such example of Catholic beneficence. The church continues to provide valuable spiritual upliftment and guidance to hundreds of millions as its central mission has always been.

The Catholic cathedrals of Europe and other parts of the world continue to be oases of peace and beauty and stand out as beacons of civilisation. When one places the magnificence of the church and its mainstream activity against the few hundred rogue priests about whom so much is gleefully written, they are seen to be very minute.

For centuries since the rise of Protestantism, the Catholic Church has been the most reviled of Christian denominations. The only religion which is far more reviled than Catholicism is Hinduism. But despite the continuous attacks of every possible description, Hinduism has survived over the last 6000 years and remains the oldest living world religion and has quietly continued to contribute to the welfare of man by such things as Ayurvedic medicines, yoga and its comforting and enlightening philosophies. The Catholic Church is now seriously addressing this issue of the several hundred paedophile priests. Pope Francis, for the first time in the history of the church, has issued a letter ‘The People of God’ to the entire Catholic community on the issue.

Media extracts from the letter mention . . . “the heart-wrenching pain of these victims that were long ignored or kept quiet or silenced . . . With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesiastical community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realising the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives . . . we showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them.” His Holiness’ contrition and personal suffering are reminiscent of when Chancellor Willi Brandt of Germany was visiting the death camp at Auschwitz spontaneously fell on his knees, with tears in his eyes and hands clasped in prayer begged forgiveness for the German people and himself for the evil atrocities of the Nazi death camps.

There is no doubt that this black mark on the church would in time be completely erased and the church would emerge stronger and cleaner. The church could protect itself from

any recurrence by profiting from the experience of the Hindu tradition which in its long history of thousands of years had been able to evolve methods of protecting its priests and people of God from falling into the morass of sensuality. They evolved an effective system of mental, spiritual and physical disciplines including types of food intake which is known by the Sanskrit word “Tapasya”. One of the elements of Tapasya which could immediately be adopted is a type of food priests should consume.

During the Middle Ages, the food intake of the monks and priests was far more vegetarian with no hard liquor and with regular periods of fasting. In the modern world, the priesthood has adopted the usual Western middle-class fare which has a great deal of meat and some hard liquor. In the Middle Ages, because the vegetarian diet led to a more meditative and less sensual temperament, there emerged

mystics like St Francis of Assisi. A diet of meat and hard liquor stimulate libido that is sensual desire, which sometimes becomes uncontrollable. Adoption of a Tapasya type of diet could bring comfort and normality to a celibate priesthood.

One type of meditation that could control or eliminate burdensome sexual desire is to meditate on the human body as it inevitably becomes - ageing, sick, dead, decaying corpse, skeleton. This brings home the reality of how fast the human body changes and neutralises the illusion that a human body is permanently beautiful. Some Buddhist monks who may be struggling against being overwhelmed by sexual desire use this meditation, sometimes even meditating in graveyards. Both Christians and non-Christians are now aware that the Catholic Church is cleansing itself of paedophile priests and will grow stronger and healthier.

THE fashion show was a big event in the rural town of Anderson’s Ville. Weeks before the event posters were placed all over to alert the community of the show. Then a car with a loud hailer crawled through the streets twice weekly announcing the date. One week before the show everyone was eagerly looking forward to the event.

The evening of the show saw a mini-invasion of Anderson’s Ville. Models, vendors spectators and buyers (sponsors) all flooded into the small community. It was chaos the type that folks there had never before witnessed. Parking was a big problem. Many visitors with no pace left to park, vehicles just parked in the nearest driveway. This caused a great deal of acrimony. Police had to enter the show and asked to see the driver of the blue/green/white vehicle license plate “XYZ” to “Kindly remove your car from blocking a driveway.” Eventually, things settled down and the show got on the way.

Models were dressed, makeup completed and they were all ready to go. Meanwhile, the crowd waited patiently for the show to begin. As usual, it started three hours late. Lights were dimmed and the announcer called the first model onto the runway. The anxious crowd cheered and the show was an instant hit. Model after model, varied fashions, styles, shoes, hats and accessories were displayed. The majority of people had come to see a show such as this for the very first time.

After all, 10 designers had displayed their collections the finale was announced. Models and designers walked onto the runway to bring the show to an end. When they had departed the Emcee started to make some announcements about future events. He was halfway through this monologue when three new models came onto the runway.

They were all stunningly beautiful and wore magnificently designed clothes. Like butterflies, they floated across the stage with grace and poise. Their beauty was unmatched.

The crowd roared in approval. They gave the three beauties a standing ovation. The models departed but the crowd noisily demanded an encore.

Hearing the outcry the organiser returned to the stage to find out what was taking place. After hearing their requests, she went to the dressing room of the models and enquired about the last three who had walked the runway. No one knew who they were. She was returning to her room when she saw the three beautiful maidens.

“Were you on the stage a moment ago?”

“Yes, they loved us,” one of the girls said.

“I don’t remember contracting you ladies.”

“We only just arrived.”

“Were you on my list?”

“No, we heard the crowd and decided to show up.”

The organiser looked at each one in turn. She was puzzled.

How could such beautiful models be around without she or her people knowing about them?

“Which agency are you attached to?” she enquired.

“We are not attached to anyone. We are free spirits,” one of the models replied.

“Oh you mean freelancers,” She smiled at their obvious mistake.

Then it hit her. This was a golden opportunity to recruit three of the best models she had encountered in her 25-year career.

“Would you three like to work for me?”

“Sure.”

She quickly handed them each a registration form. “Fill them out and drop them off at my dressing room.”

The ladies left and the designer went to her room and continued her work for the night. So engrossed was she in the finances and other arrangements that she did not even know when the forms were dropped off. Just after midnight when she was about to leave she spoke to some of her regular girls.

“Do you guys know anything about the three new models who walked the runway late tonight?”

“No. We’ve never seen them at any other gig,” one girl said.

“Even the clothes designs were unique. Never seen anything like that,” another model said.

I sought the opinion of the then Minister of Health to find out if I could seek help in the UK. This was agreed and my appointment as director was mainly to help with fundraising for providing a comprehensive hearing service in my home Guyana. We sought funding from the Lottery in the UK and the fundraising made of £250,000, she said.

Project 2000 was conceived and a fully comprehensive service comprising of a doctor, nurses and technicians to make hearing mounds and a 4x4 vehicle to take the service over

the whole country were all provided. Many Guyanese with a hearing problem benefited from this service, Lorde stated.

FEEDING PROGRAMME On a visit to her mother’s home village of Beterverwagting on the East Coast in 2005, Lorde said the medical officer in the area told her of children who were having some problems, going to school with just sugared water for breakfast and no lunch. This, she said was confirmed by the then head teacher.

“On my return to the UK, I discussed this matter with AGNAP and also with the Soroptimist International club, for which I had become the president. Help was given. Funds were raised. Links with the head teacher of the B/V school and the parent-teachers group were made. I returned to B/V three months later and funds were provided to prepare meals and for breakfast for 30 children. After six months, Food for the Poor took over the funding of the project.

As a result of members of Soroptimists knowing of the BV school, a school in Catford contacted her offering fiction and nonfiction books. Over 5,000 books were donated and sent to the school, so a small library for children and parents were formed. Ten computers were also donated by an Inner Wheel Croydon member. This enabled the B/V children to link with children in a school in Croydon to exchange messages.

COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES LEAGUE (CCL) Lorde is a member of the Commonwealth Countries League (CCL), an organisation that provides bursaries for girls of the Commonwealth, who are ready for secondary education. The fund enables children to have uniform, books, travel, especially where parents are going through financial difficulties. The funds are provided to the school so that they can be properly accounted for. “Over the past 20 years, I have managed to provide many bursaries to Guyanese girls, children from Jamaica and South Africa,” she said.

She is also known as a champion within the diabetes community, doing work in the UK, as well as in Guyana.

“I became interested in diabetes because it is a condition affecting members of my family and many friends.

I was offered training to become a diabetes community champion. For the past eight years, I have been actively engaged in communities in the UK, in teaching people how to prevent becoming diabetic. This involves going to schools, workplaces, colleges, railway stations and having a stall in my local market, where I display information and answers questions from the public,” she stated. WE are on to the fifth Confidence Becomes You class and I must mention what a joy it is to see the transformation in some people. I am super thrilled to start my Fifth Edition. In order for us to grow, we must develop confidence.

I told a few stories about my confidence and how it benefited me in my book Living With Intention.

I told my cousin, Clem, I was going to be at Motivating the Masses with Lisa Nichols in Atlanta and I will be in the front row. I even envisioned the tiger-print outfit I was wearing

in the front row without knowing how I was going to make that possible. On October 22, I sent a pic to my cousin wearing a tiger-print outfit and sitting in the front row. My faith gave me that confidence and that day is as clear as it was yesterday. I always feed my faith and starve my fear.

A confident person is not always right but they don’t fear to be wrong or fail. People buy into you before they buy into your vision, product or services.

A human mind with the ability to think well is like a diamond mine that never runs out. Teaching someone else to think better is the best gift you can give someone because it represents the gift of unlimited potential. Good thinking shapes who you are so we have to be intentional to engage in good thoughts.

I am sharing with you a few of the things I will be sharing in the class: WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM AND SELF-CONFIDENCE? Self-esteem refers to how you feel about yourself overall; how much esteem, positive regard or self-love you have.

Self-esteem develops from experiences and situations that have shaped how you view yourself today.

Self-confidence is how you feel about your abilities and can vary from situation to situation. I may have healthy self-esteem, but low confidence about situations involving Math (this is true).

When you love yourself, your self-esteem improves, which makes you more confident. When you are confident in areas of your life, you begin to increase your overall sense of esteem.

You can work on both at the same time.

To improve both your self-esteem and self-confidence, you have to be intentional in every way.

Set small, achievable goals and be committed to achieving them.

It’s this commitment that will keep you going on those days when you want to give up.

Hold yourself accountable and be responsible. It is easy to blame everyone else so don’t let us fall into that trap.

Motivate yourself every day and have positive affirmations.

I AM, I MUST, I CAN, I WILL. Just like we have confidence builders we have confidence killers. Comparing yourself to others can damage you more than you know.

Don’t compare yourself to others because you are uniquely you and only you can tell your story best.

OTHER PEOPLE’S OPINION OF YOU If you worry about what people think, it is because you have more confidence in their opinion than yours. We all at some point have to self-doubt and it may bother us but don’t encourage such thoughts to linger. Confidence makes us say, ‘Yes I can then figure it out after’.

LOW SELF-WORTH-I DON’T THINK I CAN It is not the difficult that defeats us it is the lack of confidence in ourselves that defeats us. We will also be discussing how to develop your core message, how to manage your time better and how to present yourself and brand better for you not to rob the world of your amazing contribution. We will also be discussing the 15 Laws of Growth by John Maxwell. What are your plans to raise your self-esteem and confidence level?

Samsung unveils its first 8K TV

Samsung Electronics is set to unveil the Q900R QLED 8K screen, its first foray into 8K displays, which also uses artificial intelligence for upscaling, at the upcoming IFA 2018 in Berlin.

“We’ve worked tirelessly over the years to move the industry forward when it comes to premium picture quality, and the introduction of our QLED 8K with 8K AI Upscaling is an integral component as we look to the future of displays,” says Samsung Electronics Visual Display Business senior vice-president Jongsuk Chu in a press release.

He adds the technology is a part of the company’s longterm vision of pushing 8K quality as the most accurate and life-like screen resolution on the market.

To achieve high resolution images, the screen features Real 8K Resolution capable of 4,000 nit peak brightness – a standard met by most film studios – which Samsung claims allows the TV to produce four times more pixels than a 4K UHD TV and 16 times more pixels than a full HD TV. Using Samsung’s proprietary 8K AI Upscaling technology, users will get the videos in 8K quality regardless if they are watching content through a streaming service, set-top box, HDMI, USB or even mobile mirroring.

It also uses Q HDR (High Dynamic Range) 10+ technology to optimise the TV’s brightness levels and produce colours and images as close as possible to the real thing, according to the company.

“We’re thrilled to introduce the Q900R to consumers and are confident that they will experience nothing short of brilliance in colour, clarity and sound on our new 8K-capable models,” says Chu.

Q.C. Burnham wins ‘improper conduct’ case for police officer

IN 196l, the Federal Supreme Court Chief JusticeHallinan held that the Acting Chief Justice J. A. Luckhoo of British Guiana was right when he dismissed a writ of prohibition to stop the respondent from proceeding with a writ of inquiry against Sgt. Bollers of the Guyana Police Force.

The facts of the case disclosed, a sergeant of police named Bollers, was charged indictably with fraudulent convention of money.

The information against him was dis-

missed for want of prosecution and he was then charged with improper conduct under reg. 54 (44) of the Police Regulations [B.G.], one of the allegations being that he had failed to account for money entrusted to him.

The respondent was appointed as a court of inquiry to investigate the charges and commenced the inquiry. The appellant applied for a writ of prohibition to prohibit the respondent from proceeding with the inquiry and obtained a rule nisi which was

subsequently discharged.

Upon appeal, he contended (a) that reg.

54 (44) did not apply to improper conduct which might be the subject of a criminal prosecution;(b) that criminal charges were not cognisable by the court of inquiry; (c); that criminal proceedings against him were still pending and the inquiry was automatically suspended by the operation of General Forces Order 35 made under regulation 139 of the Police Regulations {B.G.] The Appellate Court held: (i) there was an end to the criminal proceedings against the appellant when the information against him was dismissed. (ii) reg. 54 (44) had to be read together with the other sub-regulations and improper conduct within the meaning of the sub-regulation referred to acts of indiscipline which might be the subject of criminal charges; (iii) the respondent had not exceeded his jurisdiction.

The Court of Appeal ruled that the appeal from a decision of the Supreme Court of British Guiana, dated September 20, 1960, be dismissed.

The appellant was represented by L.F.S. Burnham, Q. C. .

Mr. S. Ramphal, Solicitor General, and Mr. M. Shahabuddeen, represented the respondent.

The Court was constituted by Chief Justice Hallinan and Justices, C.J. Lewis and Marnan.

In his judgment, Chief Justice Hallinan noted that the appellant, a sergeant of police in British Guiana, in September, 1957, had information laid against him charging him with an indictable offence, namely, fraudulent conversion of $128.75, being part of a sum of $1, 908 and entrusted to him as secretary of the Berbice Library.

This information was dismissed for want of prosecution in February, 1959.

The appellant was never called upon to plead to the indictment, the issue was never joined, and there was no decision on the merits or at all.

In May 1960, the appellant was charged with improper conduct under reg. 54 (44) of the Police Regulations, made by the Governor, under the Police Ordinance, Chapter 77 [(B.G.] Three cases of improper conduct were alleged which, without going into details might be described as (1) buying toys on the credit of the library instead of utilising part of the $1, 908 received by him for that purpose; failure to inform Senior Supt.

Griffith from whom the appellant received the sum of $1, 908, that he had done so; and (3) failing to account for $128.75 out of the money entrusted to him.

The respondent was appointed to hold a court of inquiry into these disciplinary charges preferred against the appellant. In June 1960, the present proceedings were brought on a writ of prohibition to stop the respondent from proceeding with the inquiry. The Acting Chief Justice who heard the application held that the proceedings before the respondent were judicial, in respect of which the writ might issue, but no grounds had been made out by the appellant why this writ should go’ Counsel for the appellant relied on two principal grounds of appeal: (1) that subreg: (44) which relates to improper conduct could not be the subject of a disciplinary charge which might also involve a criminal charge. He submitted that because the other regulations in reg. 5l4 contained a number of breaches of discipline, which might also be the subject of criminal charges, the intent of the Governor in making the Regulations would be to enumerate in the Regulations specifically all acts of indiscipline which might also be the subject of a criminal charge.

Continuing, C.J. Hallinan disclosed that Counsel for the appellant had also advanced the argument that the provisions of General Order 3254 should be so construed that in its effect it would deprive the respondent of the jurisdiction to proceed with the inquiry.

Chief Justice Hallinan said that for the reasons he had given, he thought that the decision of the Acting Chief Justice to refuse the writ is right and this appeal should be dismissed with costs.

Justice Lewis and Justice Marnan concurred with Chief Justice Hallinan.

that a lot of Lindeners suffered from asthma and other respiratory ailments as a result of air pollution,” he told the Pepperpot Magazine.

Hodge wondered whether there couldn’t be a mining operation that was more environmentally friendly.

“A town that was prospering economically, but suffering environmentally and socially. Respiratory ailments were rampant in my tiny district in Linden, and I wanted to find a solution to the issue,” Hodge said.

It was that desire to develop Linden economically while safeguarding the environment that led Hodge to register at the University of Guyana in 2014 to major in Environmental Studies.

In November, the 22-year-old will graduate from the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences (FEES) with a Degree in Environmental Studies, but his vision has expanded now that he has been exposed to all the other environmental issues facing Guyana.

The Lindener is now an aspiring Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialist and/or an Environmental Chemist.

“GIS specialist because I love cartography and I want to solve environmental issues and GIS can do both of those things simultaneously. Chemistry has always been a passion of mine so I felt and I still feel that environmental chemistry would add fulfilment to my life,” he explained.

Though he is not yet the holder of a degree in Environmental Studies, the 22-year-old is already making his mark by promoting environmental education through the Eco-Trust Society – a campus-based group. The Eco-Trust Society volunteer said once edified, persons are more likely to engage in activities that are environmentally friend. He shared the example of the EcoTrust’s outreach, a yearly Christmas Drive where children in need are given books, clothing, food and other items and taught about the need for care of the environment.

For major companies like the one back home, Hodge believes that the Green State Development Strategy will act as a guide on how companies can operate in harmony with the environment.

“Becoming a green state is one of the best paths Guyana can take right now. It would put the environment into every decision made, and that’s what I expect and hope to see. The Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) not only seeks to address environmental issues, but also social and economic, which are the three pillars of sustainable development, and without sustainable development, we will never be at peace with the environment. I think that developing sustainably is not just important to Guyana but to all countries around the world,” Hodge told the Pepperpot Magazine.

However, as stated before, a great plan or initiative is nothing without a great execution.

Environmental education is integral to becoming environmentally sound, which is important for the Green State Development Strategy. As the country moves to develop a Green State Development Strategy and simultaneously implement a ban on Single-use Plastic because of its damaging effects on the environment, Hodge is imploring Guyanese to act now in the interest of the environment.

He said persons usually wait for a reaction from nature to start “caring” for the environment but said the time to act is now.

“Young people can use their voices, their time and their energies in the fight for justice for the environment. I think youth should be involved in decision-making, and more so those [decisions] that involve the environment, because the decision made today will not affect [those] that are in the seats of the government and in the opposition, but it will affect my generation and the generations after me. And I’d prefer if I made the

decisions that will affect me,” he explained.

The 22-year-old Lindener noted too, that young people, like himself, can also be inventors and entrepreneurs in the environmental sector, providing goods and services that tackle major environmental issues affecting Guyana, the Caribbean and the world.

“There is a lot of scope for youth in the environment; we just need to take our place,” he added.

The Sophia Night School provides educational opportunities for residents of Sophia, Georgetown, many of whom are desirous of returning to the public education system. He said, “I also volunteer with the Sophia Night School, where education is offered to the people that need it most in Sophia and because I believe that every Guyanese should have the right to education.”

Huawei joins the Alexa-powered smart speaker club with the AI Cube

Forget everything you know about a cube being a 3D regular hexahedron with six identical square faces. Chinese tech giant Huawei is here to redefine the cube, and the first thing you need to know about its interpretation is that it’s… round.

Huawei unveiled the AI Cube on Friday at IFA, joining the ranks of phone makers turning their hands to crafting smart speakers. The Alexa-enabled home hub is a (currently, at least) Europe-only rival to Apple’s HomePod, the Google Home and the OG Alexa speaker, Amazon’s very own Echo.

We can argue until we’re blue in the face about whether Huawei would have been better off naming the AI Cube the “AI Cylinder,” the “AI Colonnade” or the “AI Barrel With A Tapered Bit At The Top,” but what does it actually do?

The premise is simple: It combines a 4G router with smart home assi According to Huawei it’s the sound quality that sets the AI Cube apart from its rivals. The company, which at least until now hasn’t been known for its expertise in audio, has incorporated its own proprietary tech, called Histen, into the Cube, which apparently allows the original timbre of music to be respected.

We’ll leave it to our audio experts to make a call on whether Huawei’s boasts about this tech live up to expectations in our full review. In the meantime, there’s no release date or pricing available yet for the AI Cube, although it will be on sale by Christmas.

Huawei also used IFA as an opportunity to unveil a palmsized curiosity it’s calling the Locator. This black, pebblelike object is a tracking device you could attach to your pet, pop inside your luggage or stick on your valuables to keep tabs on them in real time.

With a long standby time (up to 15 days), precise positioning skills due to the support of four different global location systems and global roaming, the device is designed to ensure you never lose track of your belongings again.

As with the AI Cube, the Locator seems, for the moment at least, to be for the European market only, and there aren’t any details on pricing or availability just yet.

‘Spectrum 14’ Opens with “SASOD is 15!” Short Film

This year, the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination’s (SASOD Guyana) film festival, “Painting the Spectrum”, has reached its 14th edition! Featuring over 40 films from all over the world, the festival takes place every Tuesday and Thursday of the month of September from 18:00 hours at SASOD’s office, located at 203 Duncan Street, Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown. The Festival not only portrays a diversity of experiences from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities, but also features different genres of films, from comedies to experimental shorts, drama and completely-new documentaries.

The first week’s theme “What is Gender, Anyway?” focuses on gender norms, expectations and persons of transgender experience, answering commonly asked questions and creating space for positive discussion and analyses. The festival officially opens on Tuesday, September 4, with the screening of a short documentary titled “SASOD is 15!” and a panel discussion featuring diverse stakeholders who will reflect on SASOD’s journey as a Guyanese movement.

Following the panel, on Tuesday, the feature film “Bixa Travesty” will open the festival. “Bixa Travesty” is a documentary that follows Mc Linn Da Quebrada, a black transwoman, performer and activist living in impoverished São Paulo. Her electrifying performances brazenly take on Brazil’s machismo. The film is one of the most acclaimed recent LGBT movies and was presented at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2018. It also won the Best Documentary award at the Milan International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the Special Jury Award at the Toronto Inside Out Film Festival.

On Thursday, September 6, the festival continues with a screening of 10 shorts on themes such as being non-binary (not conforming to being either being male or female), and the rejection transgender people sometimes face from their families and friends. These shorts come from 10 different countries around the world, including Spain, Iran, India, the Netherlands and Brazil.

“Painting the Spectrum 14” will continue every Tuesday and Thursday of September, with themes such as: “Love, Sex and Everything in Between”, “Our Rights, Our Culture, Our History” and “Let’s Experiment.” For the full programme and more information on the screenings, visit the festival’s website: https://spectrumguyana.wordpress.com/.

Admission to the film festival is free. The films are intended for mature audiences. Persons must be eighteen years and over to attend. SASOD reserves the right to refuse admission to persons who do not have identification to prove that they are not minors.

The film festival aims to both offer a safe space for the LGBTQ+ Guyanese to interact and communicate, and to educate the general public by presenting queer-themed films, which are almost never screened in mainstream cinemas in Guyana.

SHIPWRECK! BEACH LITTERED WITH FARM PRODUCE

By Abdool A. Aziz JUST before dawn on a Saturday morn, a husky voice bellowed “See wha me gat hey? Mo ah dem pan de beach. Boat sink allyuh go pick up free.”

On his shoulder was a bunch of plantains and under his arm was a pumpkin. Around his waist hung a bag of oranges, now there a mad rush to the beach which was half a mile away. I too was in the stampede and though I later brought home lots of goodies I had my behind ‘cut’ for leaving the early morn prayers.

I couldn’t believe it: pumpkins and melons rolled up and down with the tide. Plantains and bananas were stuck in the mud flat. Fruits were everywhere.

The ship was a cargo boat transporting produce to the market in Georgetown. No one paid any attention to the ill-fated vessels or the fate of the crew. All were busy carting off the bonanza. This day, few shoppers went to the market. There were ground provision, fruits and vegetables galore; even coconuts and awara. By noon, the beach lay trampled and deserted. A pig farmer waded into the water to pick up the water-logged oranges. I scanned the horizon to see the shipwreck. No sign of it. Then a stool floated in.

It must have been the captain’s seat at the wheel. But where were the crew members? I felt so sad for this tragedy. Though I got my share of cargo, I still visited the beach to ponder over this mishap.

Before it has set sail, the vessel was laid up on dry dock. The owner demanded that it sail as he was losing money. The captain felt uneasy. She was not in good shape to sail the turbulent Atlantic on his 21mile journey. But he was forced to put her to sea. As she limped out of Pot Laden to the Plimsol Line the captain was scared of the treacherous trip. He took some booze to bolster his courage and at midnight, the ‘Seahawk’ left Parika headed north then east to the Demerara River. The wind and tide were merciless and a storm arose. The navigation lights went out. The steering ‘jammed’ and the beleaguered captain had no control of the vessel that floated like a calabash. Then suddenly there was a loud noise. She slammed into the concrete groyne. Her bow split in two and she went down like a stone. The crew jumped overboard but no one saw them since.

Then a fisherman brought ashore a strange catch – the badly eaten body of the captain still holding the bottle of liquor he had grabbed as the ship was submerged, the other two sailors were never found. Not one of the beneficiaries of the cargo offered a word of sympathy. The free food blinded their conscience. I still recall the sailing a shipwreck. It was devastating, especially when live perished.

The ‘Seahawk’ was put to sea too soon. She was a big risk. The owners showed interest in profit. Now the marine regulations insist on safety inspections, the installation of radio safety jackets and a lifeboat to be in attendance. Shipping in the Parika – Georgetown Atlantic corridor is safer – thanks to the ‘Seahawk’ catastrophe.

One day while combing the beach, I found one of her navigation lights. I treasure it in memory of the crew. I often look out to the ocean and recall that tragedy which could have been avoided.

No, it’s not just you, it’s getting hotter

THE sweaty bus conductor exclaimed “This place hot bad man” as he scurried off to fill the few vacant seats in the Zone 48 bus. A typical bus conductor in Guyana works in the heat with no air conditioning for 8 to 10 hours per day. He is not alone, over 40 per cent of Guyana’s population is not formally employed and who usually turn to sell at different outdoor markets in Georgetown and various parts of the country to make ends meet. Therefore, much of the population is directly exposed to heat on a daily basis. While it might seem like an exaggeration to say that the days are getting hotter (surely we must just be feeling that way), the temperature is, in fact, getting warmer than usual and trending warmer still.

FEELING HOT! HOT! HOT! We are aware that Guyana is below sea level and is it predicted that, climate change will result in rising sea levels of 1-2 feet by the end of the century. Hence the reason, the seawall continues to be built higher and higher? Living in Guyana, we have already witnessed the effects of climate change, through extreme weather events such as, floods, heavy rainfall, and droughts. I have been surprised to find that in Guyana, I have not heard the word “heat wave” as much as I would have expected in conversations given the abnormally hot weather. The danger in a hot country like Guyana is that we do not notice the slow burn of climate change until it is too late.

Guyana is a tropical country and therefore the overall temperature should be warmer than other parts of the world, but in recent years, we have seen and felt the temperature peak at alarming rates. According to a UN study, 2016 was recorded as the warmest year on record dating back to the 19th century while 2017 and 2015 tied for second place, this alarming rate in temperature increase is tied directly with man-made emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane released from burning fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas YOU ARE AT RISK Working outside and battling heat is a way of life for many Guyanese and rising heat will lead to more heat-related illnesses. Equally important, agriculture is one of the main economic sectors of Guyana employing 17.8 per cent of the population, yet climate change is increasing pest populations while decreasing plant growth and crop yields. Lastly, with rising sea and water levels, Guyana faces significant risks from more extreme storms and greater flooding leading to greater property damage and fatalities.

A VENDOR’S PERSPECTIVE Walking around the markets in Guyana, you are greeted by lots of tall, colourful umbrellas, this is the main way many vendors seek refuge from the blazing sun. Sharon Mollyneaux, a fruit vendor for over 30 years at the Stabroek Market, spoke out about the heat, stating that she has felt the difference in temperature and noted it has gotten hotter these past years. When asked how the heat affects her, she said, “Sometimes, I feel dizzy; the sun and extreme heat burn up my fruits pointing to her bananas on the wooden stall. It’s unfit to sell to customers.” Her daughter Keithana Mollyneaux, agrees with her, they are at the market from 06:00hrs to 18:00hrs daily. Keithana mentioned that she drinks plenty of water to keep cool in the hot weather.

Sharon Mollyneaux, added that the government can build proper shades for vendors because the umbrellas she uses is not always sufficient against the smoldering sun and heat.

KNOWING IS BETTER The heat will continue to rise at uncomfortable and deadly levels; therefore systems have to be put into place to address this urgent issue. There are opportunities for businesses to work with government officials to create more indoor spaces, cooling centres and promote smarter water and energy use. Most importantly, citizens should be aware of the effects of heat waves and staying indoors during particularly hot days. These are some of the reasons why it’s important for you to understand Guyana’s Green State trajectory and actively participate in the process. nation that is equipped to address the effects of climate change, the power lies in an informed citizen body, that are aware of the issues concerning the environment and ways they can get involved in crafting solutions.

Asians” was a chance to see a lovely romantic comedy, but, more importantly, it had the potential to allow people to engage with its myriad of important themes that we may encounter in the real world (social class, traditions in a contemporary world, culture clash, etc.), as well as themes that might be far removed from what we are used to (Singaporean culture, extreme wealth, and the Asian-American experience). Furthermore, “Crazy Rich Asians” is one of the films of the modern era which can help to dismantle the hierarchy of race in Hollywood and the ideology behind its existence as a film is one that exists behind many other works of art, movies, books, songs, paintings, theatre, that continue to represent the work of non-white peoples around the world.

Constance Wu stars as Rachel, a Chinese-American woman whose boyfriend, Nick, turns out to be the heir to one of the wealthiest families in all of Singapore. On a trip back to his home, Nick introduces Rachel to his stuck up, filthy rich, traditional family, who immediately take a strong disliking to Rachel and her American ways. While this concept of the family not approving of a potential daughter-in-law is not strikingly original, at least not in the romantic comedy genre, the way in which it is presented in the movie makes the idea come alive in a vibrant, wild, luscious, hilarious display of comedy, emotions, and breathtaking vistas of tropical Asia.

It is truly arresting the way in which “Crazy Rich Asians” makes use of the beautiful locales to full effect in this film, and it is a stark reminder of the importance of the use of locations in filmmaking. Every shooting location, from the Singapore’s famous Supertree Grove and Tyersall Park, to the West Village and the Perdana Botanical Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, there is ample use of architectural and natural beauty that are used perfectly to imbue the central family of the film with the required sense of being extravagantly rich.

The humour in the movie is also quite rich. Awkwafina as Peik Lin, Rachel’s best friend from college, is hilarious, serving lots of loudmouthed sass and tons of energy. Her complete lack of filter and the vocalisation of almost every thought that crosses the minds of audience members give her a chorus-like quality, giving a voice to the audience, verbalising what they think of Nick and his family. Peik Lin’s parents, played by Ken Jeong and Koh Chieng Mun, are also quite funny, satirising the new money wealth of Singapore in their gold-gilded mansion and blatant displays of wealth.

Other characters in the supporting cast are also quite good.

For example, the immensely talented Gemma Chan, playing Astrid Leong-Teo, showcases the beauty and struggles of her character in a powerful way, managing to stand out without taking anything away from any of the other actors. She somehow manages to bring the melancholy and mystery and staggering beauty of the character in a way that is exactly as the character is presented in the novel. It is indeed rare to have an actor perform a role without a smidgen of difference from the portrayal of the same character in another medium, and this is a testament to her strength as an actress.

Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young, Nick’s mother who disapproves of Rachel and considers her son’s choice of a girlfriend to be below the acceptable standards is as strong as she always is. Eleanor is played as a stoic and sharp woman, willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family and her son, while still having an emotion core hidden deep, deep in her heart. Next to Chan’s performance, she comes closest to representing the character exactly as the character appears in the novel.

Sonoya Mizuno and Chris Pang as Nick’s friends also perform well in their roles. Pang plays his character as that solid, reliable best friend that everyone wants, while Mizuno demonstrates her range, playing a light, adorable role after a serious role in “Ex Machina” and a smaller part in “La La Land.” I’m excited to see her in Netflix’s upcoming “Maniac.” Mizuno and Pang’s wedding scene is truly one of the highlights of the film, and in some ways, the trip to the cinema is worth it just for this scene alone and resplendent reception scene that came right after.

Finally, the leads, played by Constance Wu and Henry Golding have very good chemistry and are extremely believable in their roles as a young, passionate, college professor and a secretly wealthy Singaporean billionaire, respectively.

Wu deserves this lead role in a feature film and hopefully, this will serve as an inspiration for more Asian leads in film.

Her eyes are so expressive, that the silent moments when she thinks about the jealousy she has encountered from the girls besotted with Nick or when she contemplates her future with or without Nick are truly powerful moments of acting. The emotions that are brought out by Rachel and Nick, particularly in the climactic scenes are a testament to strengths of both actors and it is enough to make you leave the theatre weepy and forlorn, ready to look for love.

THE PASSAGE A passage of great quality expression Some breeds of dogs, like the Newfoundland and the Labrador, are named after parts of Canada. Of these two dogs, the Newfoundland is bigger – so big that a boy can ride on its back! It is also big enough to rescue people from drowning, especially as its webbed feet help it to swim well. Its shaggy coat is almost always black.

The Labrador is also a good dog, although not as big as the huge Newfoundland. It can also be black, but some Labradors are a beautiful brown colour. Whatever the colour, the coat is smooth. It has a tail like an otter, thick at the base and covered with long hair. Because it is an intelligent dog, it is still used for hunting, especially to find and retrieve game. It is particularly good for fetching waterfowl, as it is an excellent swimmer, even when the water temperature is below zero. In fact, fishermen

have used it to carry messages between ships!

There are other breeds of dogs which take their names from places where they have originated. Still in North America, but at the opposite extreme both location and size, we find the Chihuahua. Chihuahua is in Mexico, in the far south-west corner of North America. The dogs, which originally came from Chihuahua, are so tiny that one can fit into a large pocket! They have bright eyes and smooth short coats, which make them look even thinner. They have a high-pitched bark, but many people like to have them as pets because they are intelligent, quick to learn, and fearless for their size.

Give respect for your weekly circumstances which concern travel, eating, household chores, and leisure activities, among other important aspects of daily living. b) Be aware of the content size for each time-tabled session. c) Let each session have three distinct sections: start-up, study, cooling down. d) Use expected and unexpected short breaks constructively; use breaks for either relaxation or recalling past study; or unravelling a ‘knot’ in a study area. e) Plan thirty to sixty minutes for effective routine study, and have regard for shorter periods seriously. f) Keep on jotting notes selectively to ‘jerk’ your memory. See if you are a person who applies yourself easier to short bursts of highly specific study, or a person who writes brief outline notes on revision cards; or reorganises notes on specific topics; or draws and labels diagrams. Whatever kind of student you are, start study immediately and continue until very close to examination days.

Cassava Bread 4 lb bitter cassava salt to taste

Instructions Peel, wash, and grate cassava.

Squeeze out as much of the juice as possible, using either a matapee or wringing in a towel (juice can be used for making cassareep).

Leave in lumps to dry (slightly) in open air.

Pound, sift, and add salt.

Heat a girdle pan and a metal hoop to the size of the cake required.

Cook until set, using moderate heat.

Remove the hoop, level the surface, and press firmly.

Turn and cook on the other side.

When cooked through, remove cake and sundry until crisp.
