COVER LETTER I’m a motivated and young urban designer & landscape architect. My first ideas about design and architecture were shaped by my interaction with the multicultural hometown where I was born in and observation of its urban transformation. As I grew up, I witnessed how an uncontrolled and bad planning could exterminate the beauty and aesthetics of a city. From then, I never stop venturing into design. Even till now I never stop learning and questioning on how can design help to improve our environments.

Having studied urban design/landscape architecture at bachelor and master’s level later on, I got a better insight into the roots of the problems, solutions and decision-making processes from a broader perspective through contextual, analysis-based and interdisciplinary-oriented approaches. I admire people-oriented urban design and landscape architecture manifesto which is why interdisciplinary design objectives have always been a part of my design.

Having worked on transforming wasted urban areas in the context of Milan in my thesis and worked on different scales of projects afterward as professionally, I envisioned a career to take part in projects that will match with my experience and contribute into world design community. Thus, I am looking for platforms and projects bringing sustainable solutions through lenses of ecological,cultural and historical perspectives.

Umbertide is a small town in the province of Perugia.

The project area comprised of three urban components; a square, a street and a parking area. The project required us to find a solution to one of those three urban components which we deemed to be problematic in the light of analysis process. Among them, I realized that the square could not fulfill its function as a gathering space and focused on rehabilitating that component. Setting the surrounding buildings’ facades and extensions of streets as my reference points, I proposed a new “PIAZZA” having a unique blend of such materials as wooden decks, concrete surfaces and greenery areas. The new piazza would function as a new area where more people would use a gathering and recreation space.

SKET C H ES The aim is to propose a communicative and connected urban design approach which will discover and explore the city of Çanakkale where the legend of Troya had been occurred by considering its huge, deep-rooted history and city’s multi-layers. The city itself is a place where people can easily see many hybrid spaces which can be defined conceptually as a palimpsest. Hybrid spaces provide new opportunities for urban interaction, connection and communication among urban dwellers, ranging from local residents to globetrotters.

These spaces can be also defined as 4th urban spaces which can be created by re-passing unprecedented notions of private and public realm. Thus, I analyzed all problematic and potential urban spaces in the city and tried to create a matrix which will work together and connected with each other. Overlaying and overlapping different activities on these spaces make undefined spaces into hybrid and vibrant spaces.

PARTIAL PLAN OF WATER FR O NT Later on, these multi-layered and reactivated hybrid spaces can create a social network which enables inhabitants to explore and discover that historical city again and again. Focusing mostly water edges, I proposed new and transformed activation spaces, bridge connections, central parks, trepass networks, diagonal paths and new hybrid spaces. All in these spaces it is possible to make multiple public activities at the same time. Most of these spaces have already historical and cultural importance which can be easily regenerated and transformed into dynamic and hybrid places.

The main features of Gaggiano could be represented by three very evident and strong elements residence, industry and agriculture and one dispersed and in-completed element composed by different services and facilities which are disconnected. In this kind of situation I propose to provide the new services that in Gaggiano do not exist in order to cater the needs of the residents. All these services and facilities, considered as the connectors in between residence, industry and agriculture, should be well connected to integrate the urban organism. Using city street as “green connectors”, different public services and facilities are being managed. In parallel, creating ecological and sustainable neighborhood with large public open space is another issue that enables residents to use the area in an efficient way. I try to reuse ex-industrial buildings as public services and improve the existing buffer zone.

Concept Map Considering the three interfaces as the intervention areas, we attempt to create a new city hub to redefine the ex-industrial area in the northern part of Gaggiano, construct a new residential community located at the edge of the urbanized area and re-qualify the existing green system to make it as a whole through a “circulated urban furniture” structure.

The curve green belt, considered as an interface or buffer zone, is situated in-between the residential area and agricultural area. Basically this belt presents already different landscapes in different segments. To take this advantage, we try to divide the green belt into different themes according to their existing characteristics. In the meantime, we will construct “circulated urban furniture” structure in order to form all green segments as a whole.

The Rivoltana road is one of the metropolitan transects on the east side of Milan, looking for a new identity and new development, especially for the industrial areas. The study area is located along this axes in-between the Municipality of Pioltello and the Municipality of Rodano. The railway from Milan to Venice and the Rivoltana road define my intervention area, which covers the chemical pole area with a high percent of land of soil pollution.

However, the site is quite accessible from all directions. The airport Linate is to the southwest of these two municipalities transporting the passengers from a national and an international level. As mentioned before, railway and Rivoltana road are another two main infrastructures that connect the site with the surrounding territories from a regional level. In particular, the train station Limito is located within our intervention area. My project aims at re-generating and re-developing this territory by an urban design approach combing the energy ideology and focusing on people,environment,energy and mobility these four themes to enhance the centrality and attractiveness of this territory in a sustainable way, and more important, to provide a greener living condition for the residents who live in this territory.

The project is about the requalification of the “Trifoglio” area which is a small open space inside the campus of Polytechnic University of Milan.

The project is basically part of ongoing workshop of “Citta Studi Campus Sostanibile” which is “Sustainable Study City Campus Project” supported by Municipality of Milan. Main objective is promoting the pedestrianization in front of the “Trifoglio” building. Open space in front of Trifoglio building is identified as having disturbing elements cause lack of visual profundity that mostly seen in on underpass entrances in the area. Building entrances in which possible to see unrecognizable space conditions are characterized. I understand that these spaces are lack of hierarchy that could be revised in the design process. Initially, the main idea is to guarantee a better connection between the “Trifoglio” area’s heart or nucleus and the inherent spaces related to the “BEST” library and the classrooms at the ground level of the “Nave” building. The new pathway running parallel to the Bonardi street and the outline of the extended green area, after the process of removing unnecessary materials, show the students the trajectories towards that “hidden space”.

Another important intervention is the placing of the Loges system that will guarantee a better usability of the entire area by the visually impaired users. Another the idea is to give the sense of using different materials on the ground which enable students to experience different senses and creating dynamic, livable and hybrid environment. In parallel another consideration is to generate the area attached to slope is designed as a pass way which is integrated by strips of concrete and of vegetation, with a number of trees and lighting structure, which enable people to entertain themselves during the day time. Smart infrastructural system circulates the area inside the “corten steel” starting from the lighting elements attached to the wall and diffuses through the whole area.

“DROSSCAPE” AS A TEMPORARY REACTIVATION TOOL; PORTA ROMANA DISTRICT M A S TE R T H E S I S, M I L A N - I TA LY, 2016 Software: Autocad, Sketch-up, twınmotıon, v-ray, PHOTOSHOP, ıllustrator

The project aims to adaptively reuse and transform of waste urban spaces in an area Porta Romana and Ripamonti close to the center of Milan, Italy. The project site is located in a part of town which contains both the administrative headquarters, heavy infrastructures and lots of industrialized buildings typical for Milan. The design proposal draws attention on both at the dynamics of the local scale and the metropolitan scale by generating a holistic approach with the idea of creating whole connected, permeable, accessible and habitable urban fabric. The scenario is redefining not only the ex railway of Porta Romana but also spaces on the Ripamonti axe and Viale Toscana. The “drosscape” formations are being rediscovered and redefined by reactivating the area with a temporary use. The scenario involves wooden bridges for the connection to pass railway lines easily, green extensions to be integrated with an existing green spaces, gathering platforms and follies for users to gather, wide open recreation spaces and pathways to generate accessible environment both inside and outside. Thus, wooden bridges and pedestrian-oriented paths deal with the increase of the connectivity both inside and outside the site. Furthermore, design proposal involves both hard and soft pavements integrated with the existing urban fabric to allow inhabitants enter the site. Detachable and removable follies and structures generate temporary and hybrid urban spaces in which it is possible to observe not only the site but also surroundings. These follies serve are served as a “vista tower” or “observation dots”. The research design project offers tree-lined paths which orient users to reach another points in the area with an easy access. The important point is preserving the existing plants and green infrastructure in the area to create a compact usage.

The term: “drosscape” points out the residual landscapes in nature, -which are abandoned spaces, vacant lots, vast areas, contaminated soils, factory left overs and somehow scaped, or resurfaced, and re-programmed by human intension with their reactivation potentialities.

Naviglio Pavese is a historcial canal system which is 33 km long and connected the city of Milan to Pavia, and through a flight of six locks to the River Ticino. It is a circulated system that carries clean water from Southern rice fields to Northern city belt of Milan. There is a huge existence of activities and residence attached to canal. First floor of apartments are mostly retail and upper parts are residence. However there is a lack of pedestrian flow because of vehicle oriented system. Cars are passing through canal and they are blocking pedestrian flow. That is why there is no efficient use of water in the canal. Inhabitants do not have an efficient access to the water. It is difficult to see also variety of materials. The project aims to pedestrianize the canal. Municipality of Milan is also one of the stakeholders. By the support of the municipality I propose a landscape design to re-qualify the environment by pedestrianizing the canal. It is aimed to be pedestrian friendly and less vehicle oriented. Besides, I try to diversify the materials to attract people to navigate through the canal in order to use water in an efficient way. Usage of hard and soft materials is one of the main aspect of the project. By implementing wooden decks attached to canal is aimed to attract inhabitants to spend more time at canal side. LED covered grass pavements are another attraction points especially for night time. Canal is allowed cars only for service and emergency conditions.

Sichuan Urban Design project involves 6 major programs to be designed in project area. These programs illustrates mainly Culture & Performances Area, Culture and Creative Commercial Pedestrian Area, Eco & Agriculture Experience Area, Agriculture Industry Model Demonstration Site, Eco Health & Resort Area, Intelligence Sci-Technology Park. I created a master plan for the area including all these programs on a harmonious sequence. I started generating some sketches for analysis and created some initial drawings for contextual and conceptual design. The area is apparently divided into two parts. There must be a scenery lane crossing in the center part and dividing the area seemingly into northern and southern parts. Northern part is allocated for agricultural experience areas, health tourism areas, eco-resort hotel spaces and landscape areas. Southern part is mostly allocated for the residential spaces, cultural and commercial activities, technology parks and industrial areas. Scenery lane is designed for visitors to enjoy through the paths and the landscape suggest people variety of visual, haptic and hybrid expression from different terrain-formations to various colorful plants, while they become an essential part in the circle of region’s flora. In general, paths and curvilinear ways enable visitors through a landscape of hills and paths on curves resembling a river. As inhabitants are diffusing through the landscape all paths are leading to open spaces, plazas, where people can rest, rehab or enjoy. A natural landscape and trees offers semi-open spaces to the activation points.

The MAX Show Center will be located in multiple cities. In order to receive a maximum visual presence, the show center is always placed at a corner of a road crossing. For purpose of outer space and building efficiently as well as economically, the show center was to be designed as a prototype and multiplied in different cities. With no reference to a specific physical or cultural context, the landscape and architectural design started from understanding culture of the company, and rationalizing the show center’s inner/outer structure and space use. The design then is conceived as a “gift box” to present a proposal represented through a physical model showing the company’s vision of development for that area. For visitors the “gift” is revealed through a spatial sequence constructed by an architectural adaptation of the company’s logo “MAX”: M as module of the facade, A as a front desk, and X as wrapping of the gift – floor material and pavements extending to the wall and whole area. The “M” screen and “M” patterned perforated metal panel add refinement and delicacy to be inviting to visitors. The landscape, materials and plants are designed to illustrate the richness of the region,Qingdao, where there is a rich flora. In that sense, mostly typical evergreen and deciduous shrubs of the region are used and it has been chosen according to endemic species and location-based perspective. Mainly oak, maple, pine and fruit trees would be allocated because of the area’s climate and usage. Smooth topographical differences are being created on the ground to increase landscape variety. The show center’s first location is Qingdao, a previous German colonial city. In this case, part of ground pavement was applied with natural stone that is typical impression of old part of the city. Combination of curvilinear and linear paths on the ground are designed to provide visual pleasure as well. Wooden and bamboo surfaces are typical of Chinese culture which are used to represent the feeling of smooth welcoming particularly at the entrance.
