What was this play's seed?

I'm half Puerto Rican, half Jewish, and I was interested in having a character with a mixed cultural background who was dealing with questions of identity. I have very light skin, and the rest of my family has dark skin. I remember distinctly a few times when I was a kid when one of my elder family members would be treated less respectfully than I would be. That left a stamp on my brain. That's where 26 Miles really started out -- I thought it was going to be an issueplay, but it became about a mother-and-daughter relationship.

Why did you decide to set the play in 1986? And is there something distinctive about Olivia being 15?

I was really interested in them escaping--truly leaving behind their lives--and I think that is much more difficult now with cell phones. In 1986, I think it was possible. And Olivia's age means that everything is not yet set in stone for her. Fifteen is a time in a young woman's life when "Who do you want to become as a woman?" is a question you're staring right in the pimpled face.

I love coming-of-age stories. A big influence on this play is the movie Y tu mamá también, which is a roadtrip with two young men. I could so quickly list five road-trip stories about adolescent boys that totally pull my heartstrings. It's much less common with young women, and much less common with a mother-daughter pair.

What does being on the road allow them to experience in a new way?

When I was about 10 years old I went on a trip with my mom to South Dakota, and we stayed on a Lakota reservation while she led programs for adolescents of color. When you're young, seeing things outside of your context is eye opening.

Beatriz and Olivia are completely out of their contexts. Almost like editors, they're able to step back and try on new hats--maybe live an idealized version of themselves, away from the men they leave behind. This story couldn't be told in their two living rooms because it's about: Who am I, if I'm not defined by where I am--or what I'm supposed to be?

I have a background in musical composition, and one of the fun things about writing this

22

Are there other connections to your musical In the Heights, or to Elliot, A Soldier's Fugue, which is also a musically structured play?

This is a very intimate play, as opposed to In the Heights, which was an enormous project with 11 protagonists. I wrote the two plays at the same time, so they balanced each other out very nicely.

Before this, I hadn't written a play that I would consider psychological realism. There's a lot of fantasy in this play, but there are conversations that real people might have, in a language that real people might use. Coming off Elliot--which was much more experimental in terms of language and structure--I wanted to give that a try.

What does Olivia learn about herself on this trip?

She knows she's missing a piece of herself and a female role model, but I think she doesn't realize that she's also missing everything that comes along with that mother figure--a sense of self, of cultural identity. She has to claim it. In the production at the Alliance Theatre, she returned home to her father, and that was that. I thought that ending was beautiful, but it didn't feel like her journey was complete. In this new draft, the ending is the start of something new.

By the end of the play, Olivia's mom and dad have both gained access to her private journal. Why does Olivia give Aaron the notebook in the end?

As long as this play has existed, the last line has been "I made it to Wyoming," but at first I didn't realize it was her line while giving her dad the notebook. She has discovered herself on this trip, and she takes ownership of who she is. She challenges him: You love the concept of me as your little girl, but can you love the person who lives in these pages?

Language and paper form a powerful trail throughout the play : Olivia's notebook and 'zines, the Spanish words she's learning, her mother's letter to the antique dealer, the names they write on pieces of paper and throw out the window.

When I started writing plays, I was interested in exploring spiritual themes--specifically, Santeria, which is an Afro-Caribbean belief system. My mother is a santera, a priest. My first play that was professionally produced, Yemaya's Belly, deals with it explicitly, but I wanted to deal with it a little more subtly. There are elements of Santeria--if you want a blessing, for example--that entail writing your name on a piece of paper and doing something with it. These are people on a spiritual quest, but in a very material world. By writing a name on paper--as opposed to typing it on a computer; that's another reason for setting it in 1986--they're creating a physical object, and that has power.

KRISTEN COURY

(CEO

& PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR)

Kristen founded Gulfshore Playhouse in 2004, after moving to Naples from New York City. Under her leadership, the Playhouse has grown to a staff of 52, an annual budget of $8.2M with no debt, and led the charge to create a $72M state-of-the-art Theatre and Education Center at the gateway to downtown Naples, which broke ground in late 2021. While in New York, she worked on Broadway for Walt Disney Theatrical’s production of Beauty and the Beast and for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, The Really Useful Group, working on Sunset Boulevard and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She has directed many of the Playhouse productions to date including My Fair Lady, The Merchant of Venice, Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, The Price, and the World Premiere of The God Game. Kristen made her feature film directorial debut with Friends and Family, a comedy starring Tony Lo Bianco, Anna Maria Alberghetti, and Tovah Feldshuh, which was released around the US and Europe. Kristen has directed several new works, produced a CD, and worked on a variety of musicals in various stages of development. Kristen is also a frequent investor in Broadway productions, most recently the Tony Award-winning revival of Once On This Island. In 2021 Kristen was appointed to the Greater Naples Chamber Board of Commerce and was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Business Leaders in Collier County. Kristen is a proud graduate of Leadership Collier, and was recently accepted into Leadership Florida, joining top leaders from across the state in a year-long program. Additionally, she was

Productions

Students perform musicals and plays on the mainstage while learning from professional teaching artists, gaining confidence, and improving performance skills.

Classes

Specialty skills are taught through intensive, themed classes for all ages.

From in-school residencies and pre-professional theatre training to community partnerships, audience engagement, and student matinees – our goal is to inspire creativity, encourage self-expression, and support the blossoming of self-confidence, collaboration, and a deep appreciation or the arts.

ThinkTheatre brings theatre-based learning techniques into the classroom by pairing teachers with teaching artists to develop educationally enriching programs. Classroom residencies reflect standards-based curriculum while creating an interdisciplinary learning environment focused on academic enhancement, confidence, teamwork, and self-expression.

Community Engagement

Aiding in the development of theatre classes, clubs, and programs in our area schools, we help ensure every child in the district has the opportunity to experience transformative theatrical experiences.

So Much Drama with the Naples Philharmoic

In this annual partnership, musicalized adaptations of classic works are performed for the entire 11th grade of Collier County. Designed to enhance students’ understanding of the classic text, students additionally receive a unique opportunity to witness world-class performers.
