Most wellness principles aren’t new: movement, whole foods, rest, connection. These ideas are everywhere—but that doesn’t mean that they’re easy to absorb or apply.
Still, there’s power in hearing them again—explained with more clarity, grounded in new research or told through a different lens that makes it click. Understanding why something works, how it fits into daily life and when to skip what doesn’t serve you makes action feel more doable, less overwhelming.
That’s the spirit behind this issue. It’s not about chasing the latest trend or starting from scratch but about tuning in. We explore how our daily food can strengthen our mood, sleep and immunity. We highlight local restaurants that deliver clean,
feel-good meals when the stakes for what’s on your plate are high. We look at the rhythms and routines—like indoor pickleball or a well-timed skincare treatment—that help people feel stronger, clearer and more at ease. And we check in with the Naples family behind the megasnack brand Chomps to see how they live the health-forward values they built their brand around. Across these stories, one thing is clear: wellness isn’t one-sizefits-all. A practice can be intuitive or intense, luxurious or practical, physical or emotional. Often, it starts with simple questions: How do I want to feel?
And how can I help others feel supported, too?
Here are a few places to start.

The latest wellness finds—from the latest skincare treatment to the next wave of pickleball in the region to a sustainability-minded farm for Southwest
The most advanced cryofacial has landed on the Gulf—offering refined, results-driven treatments that calm, tone and brighten with immediate effects.
Forget harsh nitrogen blasts and DIY ice rollers—today’s cryofacials are sleek, strategic and rooted in skin science. In February, Advanced Aesthetic Solutions (aasmedspa.com) became the first in Southwest Florida to offer Glacial Rx—the only FDA-cleared treatment to use cold therapy to target inflammation, a trigger for pigmentation, redness, rosacea, breakouts and oxidative aging.
The treatment—which has three modes—can be used alone or layered with compatible treatments for enhanced effects. A chilled wand glides across the skin to reduce redness, calm irritation and subtly tighten. The effect is a dewy glow that lasts for days—ideal before a gala or to expedite recovery after a peel or more invasive procedure. For hyperpigmentation concerns like sun spots, acne scars and some cases of melasma, Freeze mode goes deeper, using therapeutic cold to break down melanocytes, the cells responsible for discoloration. As the
dead skin sloughs off, a clearer, more even complexion emerges. With proper aftercare and sun protection, new skin comes in healthy and balanced. “If you have rosacea—especially the acne-like kind—or those big, red blood vessels on your face as a man, it does amazing to calm that down,” says Cyndie Witthuhn, founder of Advanced Aesthetic Solutions. “Your skin feels nice and tight—and it looks glassy and glossy for days.”
Glacial Fx, a spa-grade version, debuted in 2023 and is now offered at Karlee Lauren Aesthetics (karleelaurenaesthetics. com) and Mes Amies Medical Spa (mesamiesmedspa.com) in Fort Myers, with Naples’ Woodhouse Spa (woodhousespas.com) set to launch the treatment this summer. It delivers the same chill-and-glow—minus the pigment-freezing power.
Amid our subtropical heat and nonstop gala season, these therapies deliver the perfect solution: a refreshing chill and event-ready radiance in a single appointment.
One of Naples’ most in-demand skin specialists expands her beauty universe with a new 2,000-square-foot studio and a luxurious body line.
Ask any glowing, Louis Vuitton-toting insider in Naples about her skincare secret, and she’ll likely point to Erica Current of The Skin Room. The sought-after aesthetician expanded her world with a standalone spa, a growing team and a retail launch: Body by The Skin Room, a four-piece collection of oils, scrubs and creams crafted with hydrating and tightening ingredients.
Erica, who earned her bachelor’s degree before training in advanced clinical skincare, launched her solo practice five years ago to bridge the cosmetic and
corrective. She now treats everything from stubborn acne to deep-set aging. The new North Naples space takes her from one suite to four treatment rooms, with two additional aestheticians joining to manage her four-month waitlist.
Built around Erica’s long-form, resultsdriven philosophy, the expansion allows The Skin Room to maintain the time, depth and precision that set her practice apart. Each treatment is customized to a client’s needs and often involves a strategic combination of modalities, ranging from microneedling to red-light

Tucked into a residential Fort Myers neighborhood, the Bartleys’ EFC Farms runs on aquaponics systems, designed by David. The result: pesticide-free growing and 90% less water use than traditional farming— plus goats, bees and chickens.
In Fort Myers, Alise and David Bartley are using aquaponics and storm-safe design to rethink how we farm, eat and build for the future.
When Alise and David Bartley took over their South Fort Myers farm locale in 2021, it began as a quiet experiment in sustainable agriculture—an effort to grow differently in a region where high irrigation needs strain the environment. Lessons born of harvests and hurricane setbacks shifted their vision, transforming their personal foray into a center for community engagement and education. Four years later, EFC Farms’ 10 acres are coming into full bloom, with fresh eggs and local honey already for sale by appointment and produce available this fall. The couple—staunch supporters of educational and mental health initiatives, including donating $2 million for the creation of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Community Counseling & Education
Center—anchored their practice on aquaponics, a closed-loop system where water circulates from tanks of tilapia to rows of leafy greens. The fish’s ammoniarich waste provides natural fertilizer for the plants, which in turn filter and clean the water. The system uses 90% less water than traditional farming and eliminates the need for pesticides—all while yielding five lettuce varieties year-round. Other veggies, like vine-ripe tomatoes, spring up out of hydroponic setups. Mango trees bear summer fruit, and banana trees produce all year. The couple work the land themselves, with EFC’s goats aiding in composting, bees producing wildflower honey and free-range chickens laying eggs sold to local restaurants like Rebecca’s in Naples.
The storm-resilient Bartley Education Center doubles as a post-hurricane refuge, with a raised structure and generator that powers showers, laundry and a commercial kitchen after outages.
Community anchors it all. In March, the farm debuted the Bartley Education Center (BEC), a sleek, storm-hardened facility that acts as a 178-person venue for weddings and events—and as a refuge after storms. “We want people to have a place where they can come in from the heat, take a shower, do a load of laundry, maybe get a meal,” Alise says. The elevated structure is stocked with a commercial kitchen and robust generator, originally designated for the Punta Gorda Airport.
Year-round, locals can frequent BEC for workshops and tours focused on sustainable agriculture. For Alise, the joy is in helping people connect—maybe for the first time—with where their food comes from. efcfarms.com

Fort Myers’ new high tea experience exalts the local flora and fauna.
A classic English tradition gets a Gulf Coast refresh with Tropical Tea Time at Jane’s Fruit Farm. Set on a five-acre homestead near Gateway, the reservation-only high tea launches this summer with a focus on fresh-picked fruit and the restorative effects of gathering and nature. The two-hour experience unfolds amid a canopy of mango and banana trees.
Guests cross a bridge to reach an island pavilion, where they sip and savor amid a small lake and a landscape teeming with soursop, avocado and mango (their specialty) trees. “Other places get crowded, but here, the focus is on you,” says co-owner Jane Farrer, who developed the farm-to-table service with her husband, Kevin, inspired by decades of global teahouse visits.
The menu follows a three-tiered format, with subtropical adaptations: banana cake, mango mousse and scones are made with fruit grown steps away. Teas range from classic brews like Earl Grey to fruit-forward, decaffeinated options from Chicago-based Tiesta Tea.
Jane leads the kitchen; Kevin, guides the experience. Held on the second Thursday of the month, Tropical Tea Time welcomes groups of two or four with reservations handled on a firstcome, first-served basis. janesfruitfarm.com

Golden Gate’s new golf course is designed for locals, built for impact and rooted in the next generation.
Targeted for a spring 2026 opening, The Gate Golf Club brings community-centric development to the former Golden Gate Golf Course, with discounted rates for Collier County residents and a home for youth-development nonprofit First Tee—Naples/Collier.
Located at Golden Gate Parkway and Collier Boulevard, the county-owned nonprofit venture—operated through Arthrex and featuring a campus and public restaurant by MHK Architecture—balances local access with competitive golf standards. Plans call for a par-35, 9-hole course by pro golfers Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy, along with a hightech, 30-bay driving range and an 18-hole putting green.
Beyond the fairways, the club will serve as the new home of First Tee. Young players can access a space to tea off that runs parallel to the main fairways, where they can learn the game and foster life skills in a setting designed for mentorship. With its local-first focus, The Gate presents golf as a civic pursuit, built for the long game. thegategolf.org

Local pickleball culture levels up with a wave of top-tier indoor facilities designed for year-round play.
Our pickleball obsession finds its climate-controlled destiny, as 2025 brings an indoor revolution: precision surfaces, temperature-regulated rallies and the liberation of year-round play.
Locales like BeachBoyz Pickleball Center and DNA Pickleball in Fort Myers laid the foundation for this year’s groundswell, which kicked off with the January opening of Oasis Indoor Pickleball (oasis.now.site) at Lely Resort’s Naples Pong. Founders Karen and Pat McAllister added an indoor pickleball court to their table tennis hub as more players turned to ping-pong to sharpen reflexes and kitchen-line control. No membership needed.
Tony national outfits are primed for big debuts. Ace Pickleball Club (acepickleballclub.com) plans to bring its open-play model to Fort Myers and Naples this fall. Long hours (most Ace gyms run from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.), 12 walk-on courts and matches for all skill
levels mean no reservations or group text headaches.
Performance-centric The Picklr (thepicklr.com) hits Naples’ Golden Gate neighborhood later this year as the region’s largest indoor facility, with nearly 37,000 square feet and 15 courts (a Lee County locale is in the pipeline).
Membership perks include access to ball machines, clinics and seamless reciprocity across 86 clubs—ideal for snowbirds and frequent flyers.
Another to watch: The Royal Pickle (theroyalpickle.com). This club (complete with IV drips, cold plunges, steam and sauna amenities, and full-on food and drink) is still hunting for its Naples home. But it could be the area’s most over-the-top pickle playground yet. With more facilities and community centers investing in indoor play for all levels, the pickleball boom is gaining ground—now free from sunburns, sudden showers and bug bites.

Fort Myers elevates the Southwest Florida climbing scene, with a new rock gym-meets-brewery set to open this fall.
Indoor climbing, once the domain of mountaineers and thrill-seekers, now attracts locals looking to build strength, flexibility and focus beyond the repetitive cadence of treadmills and weight machines. This fall, Fort Myers gets a next-level entry point into the sport with the debut of Central Rock Gym, a national brand that turns the niche practice into a community centerpiece. At the heart of the nearly 25,000-square-foot facility, just off Six Mile Cypress Parkway, stand 45-foot-tall lead and top-rope walls (13 feet taller than anything else in the region) and an expansive bouldering zone. Savvy wellness-seekers find a fitness center, space for yoga and pilates, and sauna- and cold plunge-equipped locker rooms for post-climb recovery. A side-by-side partnership with New York’s Resurgence Brewing Co. adds a Blue Zones-worthy pairing: movement followed by the restorative act of good conversation over a craft bevvy (alcoholic or not).
For those new to climbing, beginner-friendly routes, self-paced exploration and a progression-based coaching program transform what can be an intimidating sport into an accessible pursuit, where well-being comes with the satisfaction of always reaching a little higher. centralrockgym.com

WHEN YOUR CALENDAR IS PACKED WITH NONPROFIT BOARD MEETINGS, CLIENT CALLS AND GALA RSVPS, THERE’S NO ROOM FOR GUESSWORK IN THE GYM. THESE ARE THE TRAINERS GULFSHORE LIFE ’S POWER PLAYERS TRUST TO DELIVER RESULTS.
For our Community Advisory Board members—leaders who juggle demanding careers, philanthropic commitments and social engagements—physical wellbeing isn’t optional. Workouts provide the foundation that sustains their demanding lives, giving them the energy to show up fully for the causes they champion and the stamina to stay sharp long-term. When every minute counts, the right personal trainer becomes a secret weapon. These are the fitness pros our advisors trust to deliver results.
Working out at Pure Skill Fitness offers a 50-minute reset for Adria Starkey. “It’s like my little haven,” she says. The Naples studio, which offers both group and private training, uses AI-powered Technogym equipment to track performance in real-time. Group classes follow a circuit-style format—mixing strength, cardio, mobility and endurance drills—while private sessions use the same framework, tailored to the individual.
For Adria, the draw is trainer Jovan Milovanovic. “He knows who I am and works with me from that perspective,” she says of the NASM-certified trainer and corrective exercise specialist.
As president of FineMark Bank Collier County and a trustee for the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF), Adria is wired to push herself—an asset in business, but risky in the gym. “I was notorious for getting hurt,” she says. With Jovan’s help, she broke the cycle. He prioritized posture and mobility before layering in heavy weights, adjusting intensity based on her cues. A typical session includes a five-minute warm-up, weight training, cardio bursts and stretching—but every day varies. If Adria shows signs of strain or fatigue, Jovan eases off. If she’s breezing through, he raises the bar.
With his guidance, she’s seeing the lasting results she used to chase. Now, she’s training smarter, not harder—and feels stronger for it. —Annamarie Simoldoni
FineMark Bank of Collier County president Adria Starkey frequents Pure Skill Fitness in Naples, where trainers like Sergei Fedotov (left) and Jovan Milovanovic lead the 50-minute, circuitstyle classes. “It’s like my little haven,” she says.
Gulfshore Life advisory board president Denise Cobb swears by the 30-minute HIIT sessions with P-Fit owner Zachary Weidemeyer (left) in Naples. “It’s not just a workout—it’s a community,” she says.
The Trainer Who Keeps Designer Dwayne Bergmann Sharp A force in Southwest Florida’s interior design scene, Fort Myers’ Dwayne Bergmann is always on the go. To keep up the pace, our board member trains like an athlete, waking up at 5:30 a.m. to meet with Josh Vogelbach, owner and certified personal trainer at Fort Myers’ 2 The Top. “When you go to 2 The Top, you’re there to work out and get it done,” Dwayne says.
When he hits the jersey-lined gym, the designer has two goals: increase longevity and feel strong day-to-day. Josh’s functional fitness-focused approach delivers. A former college football player, the coach blends foundational conditioning drills, like squats, lunges and box jumps—exercises made for bodies in motion—with a balanced push-pull approach that allows alternating muscle groups to recover between sets. The result is an effective and sustainable combination of strength and cardio training that gets results without burning him out. “The workouts are focused on building strength rather than bodybuilding,” Dwayne says. Thanks to the smart, athletic pacing and emphasis on real-world strength work, the entrepreneur’s morning grind keeps him sharp long after the session ends. —A.S.
The Trainer Who Won Over Our Board President Gulfshore Life advisory board president Denise Cobb had never been inclined toward exercise. She changed her tune after 30 minutes with Zachary Weidemeyer, owner of North Naples’
At these gyms, progress is personal—but no one does it alone. Trainers and fellow trainees help push past limits, even on the toughest days. Each workout is adjusted in real-time during both private and small-group sessions.
P-Fit, part of the Fort Myers-based Platinum Fitness family, founded by Aaron Nash. An NCEF trustee, Denise had dabbled in fitness classes around town, but nothing stuck until she stepped into her first HIIT (high-intensity interval training) class at P-Fit and was hooked by Zachary’s infectious energy.
The industrial-style gym, tucked off Old 41 in a lofty warehouse, hosts 30-minute HIIT classes every 45 minutes, starting as early as 5 a.m. Sessions are small, fast-paced and constantly varied, incorporating moves like squat-to-press combinations, resistance sprints, push sleds and core-stability drills. “It’s like he’s in your head, pushing you just the right amount,” Denise says of her go-to trainer, who walks the room offering real-time cues and personalized modifications, so no one falls behind.
She also loves the community feel. Zachary knows everyone by name—from the teen athlete to the 80-something retiree. “It’s not just a workout—it’s a community,” Denise, a former CNN news anchor, says. “By the end of each session, we’re all clapping and shouting ‘FAMILY!’” —Emma Witmer
Iron DNA Fitness’ Seth Hayes (left) brings a multidisciplinary edge, with certifications in sports performance, functional strength and mind-body coaching.
Between serving on nonprofit committees, raising two kids and being married to Gulfshore Life president Jim Schwartzel, Carly keeps a packed schedule. For her, fitness is about efficiency and momentum. She trains three days a week at Fort Myers’ Iron DNA Fitness with in-demand trainer Seth Hayes. Her coach brings a multidisciplinary approach, with certifications in sports performance, functional strength and mind-body coaching. “He maximizes your time and is completely focused on you,” Carly says. Each hour-long session at the sleek, 19,000-square-foot facility starts with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by a mix of fundamentals (squatting, lunging, running) and strength-building exercises, using tools like a weighted bamboo bench press bar to challenge balance and stability. Training with Seth is less about complicated regimens or flashy equipment and more about building strength with precision; sessions are tailored to how a client moves that day. His prescription proves effective. In December, Carly was doing chest presses with 10-pound weights. By March, she’d jumped to 25s in each hand. “I know I’m going to get a good workout in [with him],” she says. —Addison Pezoldt

LEE HEALTH’S CARDIAC REINVENTION PRIORITIZES PRECISION, PREVENTION AND A NEW KIND OF ACCESS—FOR PATIENTS YOUNG, OLD AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED.
“The number one cause of death for cancer survivors is heart disease—that’s something we can often prevent,” —Dr. Xiangkun (Kevin) Cao, the region’s first and only cardio-oncologist, says.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States—and in Southwest Florida, the Lee Health Heart Institute (LHHI) is rethinking how it’s treated. Over the past year, the healthcare system has recruited 18 new cardiologists, launched programs in cardio-oncology and maternal heart health and broken ground on an estimated $500 million medical campus.
At the center of the health system’s expansion is an ambitious and urgent vision: manage heart disease earlier, treat it more precisely and keep patients, even those even with complex conditions, close to home.
After transitioning from a public to a private nonprofit in late 2024, Lee Health gained the ability to reinvest revenue directly into what the community needs most. Along with oncology and musculoskeletal care, cardiovascular care rose to the top—especially in underrepresented fields like cardio-oncology, cardio-obstetrics and advanced heart failure.
Lee Health’s chief medical officer, Dr. Ian Gonsenhauser, says the initiative aims to harness rapidly evolving diagnostic and therapeutic technologies to address two core concerns in Southwest Florida: an aging population with complex, chronic heart conditions and a rising number of people under 40 developing serious cardiac issues.
The institution’s efforts are already earning national attention. In 2025, Lee Health’s HealthPark Medical Center was named one of the nation’s top 50 cardiovascular programs—for the third consecutive year. They also received the Million Hearts award for their preventative care and access efforts—getting resources into underserved communities, like the more than 750 mothers reached for hypertension support.
The strongest proof of progress is in the physicians shaping what comes next. In the past year, Lee Health has added a cardio-obstetrician, Dr. Kelly Costopoulos-Bass, to integrate heart care into every stage of pregnancy and postpartum months. Imaging specialists Dr. Shant Manoushagian and Dr. Juan Gaztanaga joined from NYU Langone Health, and this summer brings a new chief physician executive, Dr. Daniel O’Hair, a leader in robotic-assisted mitral valve repair. Together, they’re part of a growing roster redefining heart care on the Gulf Coast. Meet four of the standout minds driving the transformation.
Two decades ago, cardio-oncology was barely a recognized specialty. Today, it’s one of Lee Health’s fastest-growing programs—and the only one of its kind in the region, led by Dr. Xiangkun (Kevin) Cao’s vision.
Cao—a proud Gator who graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine—treats patients at the intersection of two high-risk conditions: heart disease and cancer. His role is to prevent cardiac damage from chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy—working in tandem with oncologists to adjust treatment plans and preserve long-term heart health.
“The number one cause of death for cancer survivors is heart disease,” he says. “That’s something we can often prevent—if we catch it early.”
His team uses tools like cardiac MRI and strain imaging to detect cardiotoxic effects before symptoms begin. Some of his patients require cross-hospital coordination, leading to his collaboration with other hospital systems across the country and beyond. “We’ve had patients fly in from Latin America, the Caribbean or New York without any follow-up in place after cancer treatment,” he says. “In many countries, there’s no infrastructure for cardiac monitoring during oncology care. We take over where others left off.”
That commitment extends beyond diagnostics. Cao’s team follows up after hours, schedules same-day visits and makes sure no question goes unanswered. “This is the kind of program I wish had existed when members of my own family were going through cancer,” he says. “We built it to close the gaps.”
This fall, Dr. Katherine Lietz leads the launch of Southwest Florida’s first Advanced Heart Failure Clinic, bringing coordinated diagnostics and therapies under one roof.
Dr. Katherine Lietz:
One of the most prevalent yet misunderstood conditions in cardiology is heart failure. For patients, it often means years of fragmented care: ER visits, a revolving cast of specialists and medications. Dr. Katherine Lietz arrived at Lee Health to change that.
The Advanced Heart Failure Program launched with Lietz’s arrival in 2024—through it, she debuts the region’s first Advance Heart Failure Clinic in 2026 at HealthPark Medical Center. Today, locals with complex diagnoses, like cardiac amyloidosis, postpartum cardiomyopathy or sarcoidosis, must travel to Miami or Tampa for specialized care. The new facility brings diagnostics, medications, left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) coordination and advanced therapies under one roof—offering a continuum of care that rarely exists outside major metropolitan hospitals.
With three decades of experience in clinical practice and research, Lietz offers the rare blend of scientific rigor, organizational leadership and clinical insight needed to build a program of this scale. The Polish-born doctor trained at Columbia University and the University of Minnesota and has been published in the American Heart Association’s scientific journal Circulation and The New England Journal of Medicine
Most notably, she co-developed the Lietz-Miller Risk Score—a tool now used nationwide to identify candidates for LVADs, mechanical pumps that support patients with advanced heart failure. Her contributions were cited in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ decision to approve reimbursement for LVAD therapy in 2009—a pivotal shift in national care standards.
Since then, Lietz has helped establish artificial heart programs at major institutions and chaired the first international guidelines for selecting patients for heart pump implantation. Most recently, she played a key role in clinical trials supporting the HeartMate 3, now the most widely used LVAD in the U.S.
At Lee Health, Lietz is focused on translating her expertise into long-term, relationship-driven care. When the center opens later this year, it will offer consistent, connected care to patients facing the most demanding cardiac diagnoses. “I accompany my patients on their journey with heart failure throughout their lifetime,” Lietz says.
Dr. Juan Lopez-Mattei:
Reading the Heart in High-Resolution
Cardiac imaging is often treated as a diagnostic checkpoint; for Dr. Juan Lopez-Mattei, it’s the foundation of preventative cardiac care. “Imaging isn’t just about what we see,” he says. “It’s about what that image is telling us—about where a patient’s heart has been, and where it might be going.”
Since joining Lee Health in 2022, Lopez-Mattei has served as medical director of cardiac imaging, overseeing a department that supports nearly every branch of the Heart Institute—from structural interventions to cardio-oncology. With tools like high-resolution cardiac CT, MRI and echocardiography, his team can detect disease before symptoms appear. AI-powered platforms like Cleerly and EchoGo help identify plaque buildup in asymptomatic patients, early-stage valve disease and subtle signs of heart failure that traditional testing might miss.
Before coming to Southwest Florida, Lopez-Mattei spent nearly a decade at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he helped define national best practices in cardio-oncology and advanced cardiovascular imaging at one of the nation’s top oncology institutions. Today, he continues shaping the field on a global scale through leadership roles with the American College of Cardiology and Inteleos, the global nonprofit that certifies doctors in advanced imaging techniques.
At Lee Health, that mission extends beyond hospital walls. Lopez-Mattei has worked with other LHHI teams on regional outreach efforts to increase early detection, from mobile screening units in underserved communities to calcium scoring initiatives for Lee Health employees to detect early coronary artery disease. It’s all connected: better images, earlier answers and smarter care.
After nearly a decade at the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Juan Lopez-Mattei now leads cardiac imaging at Lee Health, using high-resolution tools and AI to detect heart disease earlier and guide smarter, system-wide care.
“The best procedures are often the ones we choose not to perform,” says Dr. Nabeel Memon, who joined the Heart Institute in February 2025 as medical director of the Structural Heart Program.
Dr. Nabeel Memon:
Intervening with Precision and Restraint
At the Shipley Cardiothoracic Center—Lee Health’s hub for heart surgery—patients with severe valve disorders or other structural abnormalities affecting the heart’s walls, chambers or blood flow often arrive with nowhere else to go. Some have been turned away from other institutions, deemed too old or too high-risk for standard procedures. Some come with complications from surgeries performed elsewhere.
But in Dr. Nabeel Memon, they find a specialist unafraid of complexity. One of the center’s newest recruits, Memon arrived from Chicago in February 2025 to lead Shipley’s Structural Heart Program. His team performs minimally invasive procedures that once required open-heart surgery: transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), MitraClip for mitral valve
repair and implantation of the WATCHMAN device, which helps prevent strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation. These catheter-based interventions are done through small incisions, often allowing patients to return home the same day.
Memon’s style is measured, intentional—guided by his philosophy of ‘precision restraint.’ “The best procedures are often the ones we choose not to perform,” he says.
Backed by advanced imaging and AI-powered diagnostics, he and his team review cases collaboratively— balancing risk, necessity and long-term outcomes. The result is fewer complications, shorter recoveries and care that prioritizes quality of life—doing what’s necessary, not simply what’s possible.

THE GRAND SLAM–SHAPING MOURATOGLOU METHOD ARRIVED IN NAPLES LAST SUMMER. WE SENT A TENNIS COMEBACK KID TO SEE HOW THE PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN PROGRAM RACKS UP.
For decades, local tennis culture has thrived at private clubs, where the game is often more about social connection than technical refinement. The arrival of the Mouratoglou Tennis Center last August at The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón, marked a shift in the landscape—from club-level camaraderie to international-caliber instruction. Founded by Patrick Mouratoglou, who coached Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, the center introduces Southwest Florida to the coach’s proven, tour-level principles, previously only accessible at his Côte d’Azur flagship academy and other international outposts.
Unlike most traditional training, the Mouratoglou Method emphasizes strengths over weaknesses. From the outset, coaches identify what already works in a player’s game and build from there. A solid forehand becomes
a weapon to build points around in the now, while a weaker backhand is retooled over time. Confidence is earned not just from perfecting form but from making strong decisions under pressure.
Having grown up playing tennis, I’ve seen coaching styles that run the gamut, from strict technical drills to more fluid, strategy-based instruction. As I step onto the Mouratoglou courts, I wonder: Can this strategic, strengths-focused program help
a player like me, decades removed from real competition, rediscover my game?
The steady voice beside me belongs to Claudio Adolfssen, the Naples center’s Chilean-born head coach. Before bringing the Mouratoglou Method to Naples, Claudio played at Belhaven University in Mississippi, coached at Georgia Gwinnett College (a 35-time national champion), and spent years developing competitive amateurs and rising juniors. “Tennis is
“Confidence is everything in this sport,” Claudio Adolfssen says. The Chilean coach leads the program at The RitzCarlton Naples, Tiburón’s Mouratoglou Tennis Center, which emphasizes building on players’ natural strengths.
The new Naples location marks the Southwest Florida debut of the Mouratoglou Tennis Center, founded by star trainer Patrick Mouratoglou—best known for training Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. On the court, coach Claudio blends strategic drills, real-time match play and conditioning to sharpen stamina and decision-making.
a game of patterns and angles,” Claudio says, watching as I reset for the next shot. “Working on [your] strengths is key in order to improve confidence.”
To help players build stamina and sharpen decision-making, coaches may guide them through active drills that emphasize footwork, court awareness and situational shot-making. “While strong form is foundational, tennis confidence is often built through successful decision-making and adapting to match pressures,” Claudio says. “This includes anticipating plays, reacting quickly and selecting the right responses in the heat of the moment.”
Like other respected local academies, Mouratoglou offers programs geared toward junior development, but it stands for its work with ambitious adult players who want world-champion training, tailored to their current game.
One of the brand’s first satellite centers in the country, the Naples locale heralds Mouratoglou’s deeper U.S. expansion. Full-scale academies in Tampa and Atlanta, as well as resort-based centers, are in the pipeline.
As we finish the lesson, Claudio nods in approval. “You’re starting to see it,” he says. “It’s about playing with intention.” At Naples’ newest tennis destination, progress isn’t about reinvention—it’s about rediscovery, tapping into your natural abilities and leveraging your experience as the foundation for what comes next. And, what’s more empowering than that?

FROM BREATHWORK TO SOUND BATHS, LOCAL SPAS ARE PAIRING MINDFULNESS RITUALS WITH TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS TO PROMOTE DEEPER HEALING AND RELAXATION.
Luxury spas are shifting their focus from surface-level results to deeper, whole-body restoration. Increasingly, treatments incorporate mindfulness techniques like breathwork, sound therapy and guided visualization to help reset the nervous system and quiet the mind. The integration of mental and physical care is well-documented: When the body is at ease and the mind is still, circulation improves, inflammation subsides and muscles become more receptive, enhancing visible results and emotional impact. Southwest Florida spa menus reflect the holistic approach, offering immersive experiences designed for inner and outer transformation.
The JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort’s (above) Doctor Babor Wellness Facial begins with guided breathing and meditation. Farther north, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples channels the ease of its Gulfside setting with visualization and massage.
A few deep, rhythmic inhales of select essential oils mark the start of the 100-minute Doctor Babor Wellness Facial at the Spa by JW at JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort. The aesthetician begins with a guided breathing sequence and short meditation, helping you mentally shift out of daily demands and into a state of stillness. “Wellness is as much about mental clarity as it is about physical rejuvenation,” spa director Eric Lopez says. The sense of calm sets the stage: When the nervous system slows, circulation improves and the skin becomes more permeable, better absorbing the clinical-grade Babor formulas used to cleanse, exfoliate and nourish.
Twenty-five minutes are dedicated to the often-overlooked back. Choreographed strokes along the shoulders and neck boost circulation and cue the body to fully relax, setting the stage for the facial treatment and sculpting sequence. Using a cryo gua sha tool, the aesthetician combines cooling therapy with precise, upward strokes to reduce inflammation and encourage lymphatic drainage, leaving the face visibly lifted and refreshed. Post-treatment, you can stretch the experience with full access to the spa’s 24,000 square feet of amenities, including relaxation lounges, saunas and an adults-only pool for uninterrupted calm.
In this unassuming retreat, near Pine Ridge Road and U.S. 41, the deep vibration of singing bowls from India set the tone. “People come from the [outside] world full of thoughts,” says co-owner Almudena Laborda. “The vibration of the bowls helps take [you] inward, to the present moment.”
The spa’s East-meets-West approach incorporates ancient Ayurvedic techniques. The Himalayan Kansa Massage uses warm sesame oil and mixed metal kansa bowls to stimulate marma points—energy centers in Ayurvedic practice, believed to promote circulation and detoxification. Almudena says the natural flow of the massage as it moves from the back to the rest of the body and up to the head carries energy upward, promoting mental clarity. Almudena suggests layering on an Indian Head Massage, which uses tension-soothing herbs to relieve chronically tight shoulders, necks and temples. The session ends with a light touch to the forehead, a technique rooted in Ayurvedic teachings that associates the spot with the ‘third eye’ chakra—a symbolic center of clarity and intuition.
Luxury meets tranquility at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples’ recently renovated, 51,000-square-foot spa. The Mindful Massage combines guided visualization, diaphragmatic breathing and therapeutic touch to bring the body and spirit into harmony. Each session starts with a full-body scan and deep diaphragmatic breathing to ease you into a parasympathetic, rest-and-repair state. A truly head-to-toe treatment, the session incorporates reflexology, focusing on pressure points believed to correspond with different systems in the body, offering relief from muscle tightness, fatigue and emotional strain. The full-body massage then works into tight and tired muscles, while a targeted scalp massage ends the treatment, with a warm, rose quartz crystal used to stimulate cranial blood flow. While the spa isn’t open to the public, locals can indulge in the meditative experience by booking a staycation or joining the hotel’s spa membership.
The Spa at Sanibel Harbour’s Aroma Fusion Wellness Journey draws on the power of aromatherapy. Choose from four essential oil blends—lavender, jasmine, eucalyptus or orange—each paired with a corresponding massage experience. Calming lavender accompanies a detoxifying ritual that promotes deep relaxation. Jasmine evokes tropical serenity; eucalyptus is paired with a sculpting massage; and bright orange energizes the body through an invigorating, awakening touch. “Guests are guided through the experience with fragrance,” says spa director Delainey McPhee. Unlike most massages, where quiet is key, this 80-minute experience invites soft engagement to keep stressful thoughts at bay. The therapist keeps you grounded in the present through gentle cues and sensory guidance meant to relax and focus your mind. Before the massage, you’ll go through a few rounds of guided breathing to absorb the aroma and 30 minutes of body polishing to prep the skin. Massage techniques are then customized to each oil’s intention, ranging from lymphatic drainage to hot stone relaxation. A final round of lotion in the same scent seals in moisture and enhances the sensorial experience.
Marco Island’s JW Marriott has thoughtfully designed lounges and water features that invite guests to linger. The restful amenities—part of the spa’s 24,000-square-foot space—are as much a part of the wellness journey as the treatments themselves.

The Naples family behind one of the country’s breakout healthy snack start-ups walks the talk—building a life around clean eating, intentional living and raising strong, curious kids.
BY EMMA WITMER
BY ANNA NGUYEN
11 a.m., and Pete Maldonado is running behind.
Easter week brought a house full of guests, heavy holiday food and, to top it off, three sick kids under the age of 9. It was chaos.
“He just finished up his morning workout, so he should be out in just a minute,” Pete’s wife, Stephanie, says while picking up a few toys scattered around their bright, high-ceilinged Naples home. She knocked out her gym time hours ago while he wrangled the kids. Most days, the couple’s mornings run like clockwork—balancing workouts and school drop-offs for their three young children. That’s how the couple resets after a stressful stretch: not with a Netflix binge, but by falling back on the structure they’ve spent years building. “I need to go work out and be physical [to be able to focus],” Pete says, emerging from the shower. “I feel best when I’m on my routine.”
Pete is a co-founder of one of the country’s fastest-growing food brands: Chomps, a grass-fed, high-protein jerky that’s dominated social media nearly as much as store shelves over the last few years. After record growth in 2023 and 2024, the start-up fanatic stepped down as CEO, eager for a new challenge. He’s still involved as chairman, but is more focused on investing in and advising other health-focused food startups; Stephanie acts as his unofficial business consultant, helping filter the
frenzy—offering clarity, perspective and the occasional reality check. Their mantra: Put good in, get good out.
Both grew up in the intense, performative fitness culture of the ’90s—Pete as a wrestler, Stephanie as a gymnast. They pushed their bodies hard, but not always smartly. As adults, they sought a better model. Pete became a personal trainer in The Hamptons, helping clients break the type of unsustainable wellness habits he once practiced.
The couple has tested their share of wellness solutions along the way—from tracking macros (weighing the proteins, fats and carbs in every meal) to optimize energy to daily cold plunges. And, while Pete still loosely tracks his macros, and the pair plunges about three times a week, as a family, they’ve settled into something more sustainable: a routine built around consistency, clean eating and plenty of movement.
To keep the couple and kids (ages 2, 5, and 8) properly fueled, Stephanie chefs up whole-foods-focused meals and keeps the pantries stocked with protein-packed brownie bites, low-sugar SmartSweets and ‘sour candy’ grapes, which supply a fix for sweet-toothed littles.
From morning workouts to clean eating, former Chomps CEO Pete Maldonado and his family live with intention. “Put good in, get good out” has become their shared philosophy—and the foundation of their routine.
Pete and his wife, Stephanie, model everyday wellness through consistency—wearable trackers, whole foods and recovery routines—giving their kids a strong start in lifelong health.
Where possible, they automate the basics, making it easier to eat clean, breathe easy and sleep well. Pete wears a WHOOP fitness tracker at all times, and their home is set up like a set-andforget-it biohacking solution. Advanced water and air filtration systems eliminate environmental toxins, combatting daycare germs and upping their helpful mineral intake. Meanwhile, an Eight Sleep mattress uses AI to self-modulate the couple’s temperature, promoting deeper rest. It’s biohacking, yes—but practical. “I got the Eight Sleep a few months ago,” Pete says, tapping his wristband. “Now, WHOOP’s like, ‘Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.’”
Juggling investor calls, work trips, a healthy lifestyle and three kids is no small order. The couple has learned to rely on one another to stay on the path, or give the other the space to rest and recuperate. “I always tell my team [at Chomps], ‘Do not ever schedule a breakfast meeting for me,’” Pete says, chuckling. Morning workouts and nutrient-balanced breakfasts are non-negotiable. But the couple also knows when to ease up. Stephanie, once strict about weighing every ingredient, now trusts her instincts. “I’m not about to backtrack and tell you how much butter I used in the chicken,” she says, laughing. Dad’s also not opposed to the occasional family trip to Häagen-Dazs.
Likewise, routine doesn’t stop them from getting out and staying active as a family. School breaks and weekends bring lobstering in the Florida Keys and wakeboarding on the Gulf behind their Chomps-branded boat—an extension of Stephanie’s Southwest Florida upbringing. New York native Pete brings a love of winter sports to the family, making slope-sliding adventures a staple on the family’s annual calendar.
Ultimately, the high-energy parents are building a wellrounded life so their kids grow up strong, confident and kind, while keeping themselves healthy and present along the way. “Both of us want to be physically fit and able to keep up with them for as long as we can,” Stephanie says. “Just keep moving, that’s the goal.”
Pickleball is Southwest Florida’s favorite sport. Now, local shops and designers are turning it into a full-on style statement. From bold paddles to breezy sets, everything you need to look sharp on the court is here at home.

At 21, Bonita Springs dressage rider Jenaya Olsen trains like a pro— 25 weekly hours in the saddle, neardaily HIIT classes and her mom, Nicole, as coach and compass.
By Jaynie Bartley
by Tina Sargeant
y dawn on any given day, Jenaya Olsen is already moving—heading to the stalls to feed, walk and groom one of the 1,000-pound equine dance partners she’s been training with for months. As the sun rises, she braids the horse’s mane and begins her mental run-through. “I have my two hours of me-time with my horse, and no one can talk to me,” she says. “It’s two hours of me sitting with my horse, visualizing the test and preparing.”
From the spectator stands, dressage presents an illusion of effortless grace—a rider seemingly motionless atop a floating horse, directing a sequence of choreographed movements (called ‘tests’) with invisible cues. But behind the stillness is staggering athleticism. Often called ‘ballet on horseback,’ the discipline requires gymnast-level body awareness and core
strength, and the mental focus of a chessmaster. Every stride, half-pass and pirouette reverberates through the rider’s body, absorbed and adjusted through the legs, core and lower back. Thighs engage like a vise, calves apply calibrated pressure and seat bones shift by millimeters—all while the hands stay feather-light on the reins and the face betrays no strain. The pair moves in perfect harmony.
Meanwhile, the rider balances on an approximately 1,200-pound, thinking, moving partner. “It’s not like track or football, where the track is not going to change,” Jenaya says. “With horses, you rely on them for 80% of what you’re doing.” Riders must memorize and execute complex routines while constantly reading and responding to their horse’s energy, timing and mood. Judges assess the horse’s

suppleness, obedience and athleticism, but the rider’s isometric strength and balance are the invisible engine behind the performance. “You need to be physically and mentally fit to deal with the pressure, the politics, the pure money that goes into the sport—it’s a lot,” she says.
The 21-year-old, who dabbled in track and cross country in high school, trains accordingly, working with her mom and coach, Nicole. The two stretch daily and hit Burn Boot Camp five to six days a week for strength and cardio conditioning, augmenting Jenaya’s nearly 25 hours per week in the saddle and Nicole’s equal time teaching. The high-intensity interval training (HIIT) classes at Burn weave balance and power, building the stamina and core strength needed to take on equestrian sports. Their diet focuses on organic, whole foods sourced mostly from local farmers markets. The regimen is designed to prevent injury and help Jenaya stay competition-ready across a seven-month season (and two summer championships).
Jenaya, who grew up around her mother’s horses, has been training for this since childhood. Nicole had been riding since she was 7. Despite Nicole gifting her show ponies and encouraging her to ride since she was a tot in Switzerland, Jenaya showed little interest until they
relocated in 2011 to Southwest Florida, where Nicole vacationed as a child. Here, a fateful introduction to a Hanoverian named Welcome changed her mind. When Nicole asked her 9-year-old daughter to visit the newly imported mare during quarantine, Jenaya reluctantly agreed. “The moment I touched her face, it was over,” she says. Welcome became her muse, and soon, Jenaya began competing. By 13, she had earned her USDF Gold Medal, a distinction many dressage riders pursue for decades. Over nearly a decade, they competed, trained and amassed top wins together—before Welcome’s passing earlier this year.
As Jenaya’s talents developed, so did the family’s ambitions. After a 30-year competitive career and more than 50 blue ribbons, Nicole stepped back from showing in 2017 to coach her daughter and focus on training horses. That same year, they opened Olsen Dressage at Magic Dream Farm, their Bonita Springs facility where they breed, sell, train and board horses. They also provide affordable opportunities for local youth to engage in the sport. “Our working students get free lessons every day, and they get to ride our horses,” Jenaya says.
The Olsens stand apart from elite dressage’s typical model, where success often
The Olsens take a different path from dressage’s multimillion-dollar norm—no entourages, no imported show ponies. They muck their own stalls, train rescues and raise foals from the ground up. “The horses to me have always and will always come first,” Jenaya says.

hinges on imported horses valued in the millions and entourages of groomers and trainers. Instead, the duo muck their own competition stalls; ride and train their horses themselves; and rely on a few trusted farm staffers, along with current working student Lily Pegeus, to help with chores around their farm. The women save millions by investing in overlooked and rescued horses that have survived injuries or abuse. They also breed foals, cultivating champions through years of dedicated training. “I’m competing against girls that have $200,000, $2 million horses, and I’m on my little $10,000 horse,” Jenaya says. The thought crosses her mind often: I’ll never win anyway, so why am I doing it? But instead of giving in to the doubt, she keeps showing up—and winning.
During the November-to-May dressage season, Jenaya competes almost every weekend. It’s a constant mental and physical battle to stay in the game. On competition days, she spends time near the arena, visualizing the tests ahead of her, down to the smallest half-halts and corners, where she may need to ask for more from her horse. She watches videos of past tests to analyze for pitfalls and victories. With the
right headspace and support from Nicole, Jenaya has seen great success. Though she trained and worked in Wellington and Germany as a teenager, she eventually recognized that her mother was her ideal coach. Today, Nicole guides her development, and they work with Wellington trainer Lehua Custer—all aligned in a hands-on, horse-centered approach.
For the Olsens, the health and fitness of the horse is as critical as the rider’s well-being. They prioritize open pasture time, provide science-backed feed and ensure each horse receives individualized, ethical training. In an industry long criticized for pushing horses too young, too fast, the Olsens take their time, never rushing horses to be show-ready or relying on harsh training shortcuts. Jenaya credits her success to strong bonds with her horses, which she earns by employing gentle, humane training methods with minimal spurs and whips. Jenaya, who dreams of joining the U.S. Olympic team, embodies the ethos. “I’d rather let everyone around me down than let my horse down,” she asserts. “If I’m on my way to the Olympics with my horse and he doesn’t feel 100% fit, sorry, we’re not going.”

With over 30 years’ experience researching, reviewing and selecting Top Doctors, Castle Connolly is a trusted and credible healthcare research and information company. Our mission is to help people find the best healthcare by connecting patients with best-in-class healthcare providers.
Castle Connolly’s physician-led team of researchers follows a rigorous screening process to select top doctors on both the national and regional levels. Its online nomination process is open to all licensed physicians in America who are able to nominate physicians in any medical specialty and in any part of the country, as well as indicate whether the nominated physician(s) is, in their opinion, among the best in their region in their medical specialty or among the best in the nation in their medical specialty. Then, Castle Connolly’s research team thoroughly vets each physician’s professional qualifications, education, hospital and faculty appointments, research leadership, professional reputation, disciplinary history and if available, outcomes data. Additionally, a physician’s interpersonal skills such as listening and communicating effectively, demonstrating empathy, and instilling trust and confidence, are also considered in the review process. The Castle Connolly Doctor Directory is the largest network of peer-nominated physicians in the nation.
In addition to Top Doctors, Castle Connolly’s research team also identifies Rising Stars, early career doctors who are emerging leaders in the medical community.
Physicians selected for inclusion in this magazine’s “Top Doctors” and “Rising Stars” feature may also appear online at www.castleconnolly.com, or in conjunction with other Castle Connolly Top Doctors databases online and/or in print.
Castle Connolly is part of Everyday Health Group, a recognized leader in patient and provider education, attracting an engaged audience of over 82 million health consumers and over 900,000 U.S. practicing physicians and clinicians to its premier health and wellness digital properties. PREMIER MEDICAL WELLNESS
Dr. Joseph Bandeira is a dual board-certified physician specializing in personalized, ageoptimizing care through advanced hormone therapy and medical weight loss.
He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Motivated by a deep commitment to healthy aging, he pursued a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. During this period, he developed a strong interest in biomedical engineering and contributed to several peer-reviewed publications through collaborative research.
In 2016, Dr. Bandeira relocated to Naples, where he built a reputation as Medical Director of Geriatrics at NCH. Upon the conclusion of his tenure, he established his own private practice, originally known as Premier Medical Concierge. In 2022, he introduced Biote® pellet-based Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), helping clients restore energy, strength, and vitality. In 2023, he launched a comprehensive medical weight loss program centered around a next-generation GLP-1/GIP therapy—a dual-action medication shown to outperform earlier treatments–supported by structured dietary planning and lifestyle coaching to promote sustainable fat loss and reduce cardiometabolic risk.
After witnessing the life-changing results achieved by clients in both programs, Dr. Bandeira expanded access beyond exclusive membership and rebranded his practice in 2024 as Premier Medical Wellness—a name that reflects his broader mission to deliver physician-led, evidencebased care focused on vitality and longevity.
Dr. Bandeira’s dual-board certification ensures a rare blend of medical depth, responsiveness, and personalized attention—empowering every client to feel stronger, live longer, and age on their own terms.

The peer-reviewed topDentists provides their list of some of the best oral health professionals in Southwest Florida.
INTRODUCTION This list is excerpted from the 2025 topDentists™ list, a database which includes listings for over 90 dentists and specialists in the Naples/Fort Myers area. The Naples area list was based on hundreds of detailed evaluations of dentists and professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at www.usatopdentists.com. For more information call 706-364-0853; write PO Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; email help@usatopdentists.com or visit www.usatopdentists.com.
”If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”
This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and of course, physical results.
The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as all dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peers’ work when evaluating the other nominees.
Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline
cases are given careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies (Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, etc.) can play a factor in our decision.
Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.
Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

“
I have had really bad teeth my whole life. I’m 61 years old and Dr Skupny was recommended to me and from the first time I went to his office everyone made me feel completely at ease. I had cosmetic/restorative done to all my teeth. I never had any pain and the process was very positive. Dr Skupny is a perfectionist and his work is amazing. I’ve never felt better about my appearance than I do now.

Jennifer Khosla brings over a decade of experience bridging clinical nutrition and holistic wellness. With a background in sports medicine and advanced training in functional nutrition, the Naples-based expert helps clients optimize their health through evidence-based natural solutions. In Gulfshore Life, she helps us explore practical applications for enhanced well-being in paradise.
LONG OVERLOOKED, THE GUT IS NOW UNDERSTOOD TO SHAPE EVERYTHING FROM SLEEP AND MOOD TO IMMUNE STRENGTH. WHAT YOU EAT—AND WHEN—CAN SHIFT THE ENTIRE SYSTEM.
Gut health has evolved from a niche wellness trend to a centerpiece of modern medicine. While we’ve long known that diet influences how we feel, mounting research shows just how deeply food choices affect everything from hormone balance to mental clarity. Along the gut-brain axis—a two-way communication pathway between the digestive tract and the brain— trillions of microbes regulate inflammation, shape immune response and influence brain production of mood-related chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.
Nutrition, in turn, is a powerful lever to support health. Here are simple, evidence-based strategies to strengthen three core systems—sleep, mood and immunity—from the inside out.
Inside the belly’s microbial ecosystem, certain nutrients help make the calming brain chemicals that lull us into stillness. Tryptophan—the amino acid behind holiday turkey talk—is the starting point for the production of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin. But it’s not about eating more turkey (which actually has less tryptophan than foods like seeds and soybeans)—or, any other one ingredient.
Sleep nutrition is part of a deeper equation, requiring complex carbs to help the amino acid reach the brain and do its Anna Nguyen, Getty
job; magnesium, which activates the calming neurotransmitter GABA; and a diverse, well-fed microbiome to support the whole process. Vitamins D, B6, folate, iron and magnesium also act as backstage crew to convert nutrients into their sleep-enhancing forms. Rich in all these compounds, the Mediterranean diet rises to the top as one of the most sleep-supportive ways of eating, thanks to its emphasis on fiber-rich plants, healthy fats like fish and nuts, and anti-inflammatory nutrients.
Chrononutrition—the emerging science of eating in sync with your internal clock—shows that when you eat can affect sleep quality. Blood sugar regulation and digestion are most efficient earlier in the day, when the body is naturally primed to move. Experts recommend shifting your largest meal to earlier in the day and keeping food intake within an 8- to 10-hour daytime window to avoid taxing digestion when the body should be shifting into rest-and-repair mode. Time your last meal for two to three hours before bed to allow time for digestion and sleep-supportive compounds to do their job.
Evening habits have the biggest impact. When I help clients adjust their dinner routines, many notice a profound shift: fewer 3 a.m. wake-ups and more energized mornings. To facilitate sleep-mode, keep your final meal small and centered around fiber for fullness, healthy fats for hormone regulation, lean proteins rich in tryptophan and complex carbs to help it do its job. A go-to could be sweet potatoes with lentils, sautéed greens and pumpkin
The recipes for the house-label nut butters, found at The Bowl’s three locations across Naples and Fort Myers, were formulated by a dietitian. The fan-favorite toasted coconut cashew blend is fortified with organic chia seeds for added fiber and B vitamins, which convert food into steady energy and support the nervous system The combination of healthy fats and complex carbs in the spreads can help regulate cortisol and melatonin production, supporting more restful sleep and steadier energy the next day. While you want to avoid eating right before bed, if you’re feeling peckish after dinner, a small, fibrous snack can satisfy without overtaxing your digestive system. Paired with a banana, these clean, nutrient-dense nut blends—made without fillers or inflammatory oils—make for a calming evening bite.
Complex carbs like sweet potatoes and lentils help tryptophan cross into the brain, where it’s converted into serotonin and then melatonin to support deeper, more restorative sleep.
True teas—from green to oolong— naturally contain L-theanine, an amino acid known to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and support mental clarity. Green varieties, especially matchas, offer the highest concentrations, delivering energy and focus without the crash. At Coconut Point’s Estero Bay Olive Oil and Tea, the standout Sensei Matcha is cultivated from tea leaves grown in shade, a method that boosts L-theanine and antioxidant levels. Owner Diana Todorova draws on her background in herbal wellness, shaped by a childhood steeped in Bulgaria’s tea traditions. Her tea room emphasizes rare, first-flush teas, often considered richer in nutrients and flavor. Sensei is smooth and umami-rich, offering a focused lift without additives. It’s also certified organic and halal, ensuring a clean cup free from the chemicals and artificial flavors often linked to inflammation, brain fog and low mood.
seeds. Avoid heavy, meat-laden or starchy pasta dinners, which can delay melatonin production and keep you awake. A simple switch from white to fibrous whole wheat pasta can help stabilize levels and set the tone for a more restful night. Skip dessert at night to reduce late-night blood sugar swings and wake-ups. If you’re still hungry closer to bedtime, a small fibrous snack, such as a banana with almond or cashew butter, can satiate while delivering a final wave of tryptophan and magnesium, which supports sleep onset, duration and quality.
On the other hand, some seemingly harmless habits can interfere with sleep. Caffeine’s effects can linger in the body for up to 10 hours. Dark chocolate, sodas and certain teas may contain just enough to delay melatonin release. Similarly, a glass of wine can feel like it’s helping you unwind, but even one drink can disrupt REM sleep and cause wake-ups as the liver kicks into gear to metabolize the alcohol. If you’re going to indulge, aim to have your final sip at least three hours before bed.
For those who struggle to stay asleep, tart cherries could help. Naturally rich in melatonin, the fruit has been shown in multiple placebo-controlled studies to increase total sleep time and efficiency, particularly in older adults and people with insomnia.
The connection between food and mood isn’t just about comfort—it’s rooted in the gut, where trillions of microbes pull the strings on inflammation, hormone levels and the nutrients used to build happy neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Microbes also send signals to the brain, influencing how we feel, focus and respond to stress.
Salmon delivers key fats the brain uses to regulate mood, improve focus and keep stress signals in check—plus, vitamins D and the B, which are linked to cognitive function and emotional well-being.
Diets low in fiber, high in sugar and full of processed foods have been linked to inflammation and reduced gut diversity, both of which disrupt brain function and raise the risk of anxiety and depression. Junk food and irregular eating patterns also destabilize blood sugar, which can trigger mood swings, irritability and trouble focusing—symptoms that can mimic or worsen underlying mental health conditions. In contrast, meals rich in whole foods, a rainbow of produce and fermented ingredients support the gut-brain axis, helping buffer stress and sharpen mental clarity.
I suggest building meals around what I call ‘mood nutrients’: B vitamins (especially B-6, B-12 and folate) for neurotransmitter production; magnesium to ease the nervous system; omega-3s to reduce brain inflammation; fermented foods to introduce and support beneficial bacteria; and iron and zinc, which help synthesize mood chemicals. Phenylalanine—an amino acid found in eggs, soy, and yogurt—is also key for producing dopamine, which plays a central role in motivation and focus. Together with tryptophan, which supports serotonin, these protein-based precursors help regulate how we feel, think and respond to stress. My own meals are simple but intentional: eggs with greens and avocado for breakfast; quinoa and lightly roasted vegetables with olive oil for lunch; yogurt with berries, flax and prebiotic oats in the afternoon. Don’t overlook hydration—dehydration can sneakily mimic mood dips. And, go easy on caffeine, which can spike anxiety.
The body may crave a quick feel-good hit from sugar or refined carbs—but that spike often leaves us more jittery than grounded. Instead of letting cravings steer you off course, try these fast,
Certain mushrooms like shiitake, maitake and reishi are naturally rich in beta-glucans—a type of soluble fiber known to help strengthen the immune system by activating key immune cells, such as macrophages. At Stropharia Mushroom Farm in Naples, you can find all three grown fresh, year-round. Brothers Jor’El and Sheth Schustrin started the farm after noticing improvements in their stepfather’s Parkinson’s symptoms while he was taking lion’s mane supplements (research on the functional mushroom’s cognitive benefits is still emerging). Today, they cultivate up to 13 gourmet and functional varieties in a controlled indoor system using organic substrate and lab-grade techniques to ensure purity and potency.
grounding daytime snacks: a few squares of dark chocolate with almond butter, roasted chickpeas tossed with olive oil and sea salt for a chip-like crunch, or a slice of sourdough with tahini and honey. They satisfy, stabilize and deliver the mood nutrients your nervous system can actually use.
Mood thrives on rhythm. Skipping breakfast, pushing lunch too late or grazing late at night can also trigger blood sugar crashes and stress responses, including cortisol spikes. Even minor timing shifts can throw your system off. To avoid the dreaded 3 p.m. slump, schedule meals around the same times each day. When your body knows what to expect, it can prepare, digesting more efficiently and delivering energy more evenly throughout the day.
If you’re running late, don’t skip the meal altogether or grab something sugary just to get through. Reach for something fast but substantial—like a slice of sourdough with avocado and a boiled egg or full-fat Greek yogurt with berries and walnuts—to
restore focus and keep your day steady. Then, return to your usual rhythm at the next meal.
We tend to think of immune health in crisis terms—something to support only when we’re run-down or already sick. But the immune system is always working: identifying threats, regulating inflammation, repairing tissue. To thrive, your defenses need steady support over time—you can’t just ‘turn them on’ with an orange when you feel a cold coming on. You want to nourish the system consistently—and it’s fueled, in large part, by the gut. Diversity is key here. Most immune activity takes place in the gut, where defense cells need a wide variety of beneficial microbes to function properly. A diverse microbiome helps ‘train’ immune cells—teaching them how to recognize real threats and stay calm in the face of harmless triggers to reduce overreactions like allergies or autoimmune flare-ups. Variety also strengthens
While citrus gets the glory, several other foods power immunity. Shiitakes help train defender cells and support faster recovery when you’re run down.
the gut lining, the body’s internal border patrol, so nutrients get absorbed and pathogens kept out. Beyond known gut-friendly fermented foods like sauerkraut or yogurt, whole plants are especially powerful. Many are rich in prebiotic fibers—the preferred fuel for good gut bugs—and even those that aren’t classified as prebiotic often support microbial diversity. Deeply pigmented fruits like berries or pomegranates, for instance, are loaded with polyphenols—compounds your good bacteria like. Aim for 30 different plant foods each week. Rotating base grains and greens—quinoa and spinach one day, farro and kale the next—is an easy way to get there. Garlic and shallots are smart additions, as they’re packed with prebiotic compounds.
Beyond a varied microbe diet, immune cells need consistent access to core nutrients to function well—and they’re easy to integrate, starting with your first meal of the day. I often reach for a bowl of citrus and berries (whatever’s in season), paired with a fat- or zinc-rich food like nut butter or pumpkin seeds. Zinc supports communication between immune cells, helping

them coordinate and multiply. Vitamins A and D, and iron, are also critical, helping generate the right cells to recognize threats and respond effectively. Vitamin D, one of the most common deficiencies, is best absorbed with fat; if you supplement, it’s easy to take it with breakfast, where you can have eggs, avocado or buttered toast.
Next-up: go-to player vitamin C, which defends the body’s outermost barriers (the skin, mucous membranes) by enhancing cellular repair and reducing inflammation. Hydration backs it up, keeping your airways and gut lining moisturized, so they can trap and flush out pathogens. I aim for about 100 ounces of water a day.
Omega-3s, from fish or flax, also go in most of my meals; they help immune cells communicate and calm inflammation. Selenium, found in Brazil nuts and seafood, also aids recovery, pumping the brakes on inflammation and helping the immune system return to baseline after an illness or injury.
Eating with your microbiome in mind is not just about chasing better sleep, fewer sniffles or lower stress; it’s about creating a healthy environment from the inside out.
Asparagus feeds the gut’s good bacteria with inulin, a prebiotic fiber that sharpens immune response and fortifies the gut barrier.

Eating clean in the real world is anything but easy, especially when you’re navigating food sensitivities, health goals or medically restricted diets. Even with more ‘healthy’ menus than ever, it’s tough to tell which places walk the talk: Who’s really sourcing local and organic? Who’s avoiding hidden additives or preventing cross-contamination?
Here, we’ve curated a list of standout local spots that go beyond surface-level wellness branding. All share a focus on local-first sourcing, offerings catered to vegan and gluten-free diners and a serious commitment to transparency.
Living Vine Organic Café, Fort Myers Health coach Sylvie Szabo aimed to bridge the gap for diners with dietary restrictions when she opened Living Vine Organic Café nearly six years ago. The Fort Myers breakfast and lunch spot, which relocated to a larger location off College Parkway in February, specializes in vegan, vegetarian and gluten- and dairy-free meals. Many dishes are made
with local ingredients and layered with nutrient-dense, functional foods. Sylvie draws from her stock of USDA-certified organic producers, including arabica beans from Java D’Oro, a family-run roaster in Cape Coral, and works with area co-ops to source seasonal produce. In the kitchen, the team uses dedicated cookware to accommodate restricted diets, and fine-tunes recipes to deliver maximum flavor and texture, even when swapping ingredients. For anyone who assumes having restrictions means sacrificing indulgence, the Lemon Blue Majik donut begs to differ—vegan and gluten-free, it’s glazed with blue spirulina for a nutrient and antioxidant boost. Other functional ingredients appear in everything from the mushroom coffee lattes to the tapenade wraps to the rotating specials. livingvineorganiccafe.com
At first glance, the menu at The Local reads more indulgent than virtuous—pot roast with polenta, chorizo pizza, blue
crab tagliatelle in uni butter. And sure, it’s not ‘healthy’ in the green-juice-andCrossFit sense—but this beloved North Naples spot hits a sweet spot few restaurants manage: chef-driven food made with clean, local ingredients and surprising flexibility for those with food sensitivities or personal preferences.
This is where you go for a real night out—robust wines, house-cured meats, slow-fermented sourdough—with room at the table for the meat lover, the gluten-avoider and everyone in between.
Chef-owner Jeff Mitchell, a James Beard Foundation guest chef, recently featured
on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives , brings fine-dining standards. He and his team aren’t just open to modifications; they’re ready for them, with separate pans and pantry items like house-made vegan almond cheese or low-FODMAP cheddar at the ready. (Think: bruschetta reimagined with roasted sweet potato slices instead of bread, or a lentil-free riff on their red lentil soup, subbing cauliflower and cream to suit strict keto needs, without losing richness or intent.)
While many restaurants aim to be farm-to-table, The Local, which opened in 2013, makes good on the promise with
every plate. At least 80% of what’s served is sourced from regional farms: produce and eggs from Inyoni Organic Farm and Farmer Mike’s, hormone-free beef from Glades County’s Seminole Pride and Gulf seafood delivered weekly by low-emission ferry from the Keys. Even when the sourcing goes beyond state lines—like the Faroe Island salmon—it’s chosen with intention. “It may be a lot easier to get cheeses and already-cured meats from these other places,” Jeff says. “But going that extra mile isn’t just something we check off on a list; it’s important to who we are and what we stand for.” thelocalnaples.com
Among the various standout juice bars in Southwest Florida, there’s Juice Society Juicery, where the cold-press is made with 100% organic produce and the açaí and dragonfruit bowl bases are blended to order daily, often 15 to 20 times, using only unsweetened, additive-free frozen fruit (never premade mixes or syrups).
Non-dairy nut milks are also crafted in-house for a clean, preservative-free blend. The shop’s level of control and intention has earned it a strong following—and a recent partnership with The Ritz-Carlton, Naples Spa.
After operating out of a stand at Coconut Point for two years, Matt and Kallie Isadore opened their brick-and-mortar at the outdoor mall in 2023. The duo designed the sleek space to encourage lingering over the nourishing menu, which sources all fruit and vegetables from farms in Immokalee and Vero Beach. “It’s not just a place where you stop by, order and head out, but to take in the space, relax and decompress for a while,” Matt says. “It’s about the juices, but it’s also what the juices stand for.”
Before launching, the Isadores consulted a registered dietitian on the recipes,
Green Apron Cafe in Naples prioritizes locally sourced, nutrient-dense staples for flavorful creations like the Cuban grain bowl and Blueberry Crumble smoothie. Kathleen Brennan opened in 2017, following demand for her efforts to clean up kids’ school lunches at local schools and daycares.
prioritizing anti-inflammatory ingredients and nutrient-dense combinations. Favorites include low-fruit, low-sugar options like the OG (Original Greens), with tons of leafy greens, and sippers with functional ingredients, like superfood chia seeds and spirulina, a complete protein packed with antioxidants but best consumed in small doses (like in a smart juice blend). juicesocietyjuicery.com
& Thought 2, Naples
When the original Food & Thought opened near Downtown Naples two decades ago, it helped define clean eating in the city. The team still sets the bar with organic, uncompromising ingredients— and has been doing so long before it was trendy. Food & Thought 2, which debuted in 2022 on Airport-Pulling and Vanderbilt
Beach roads, expands on the legacy with a more elevated, dine-in experience and a stylish, relaxed setting, where raw, vegan and gluten- and dairy-free dishes are anything but restrictive.
At the helm is chef Andrae Green, whose ingredient standards trace back to his childhood in Jamaica. “We grew most everything we ate,” he says. His dishes are built on grass-fed and -finished beef, free-range chicken and eggs, and produce sourced from the parent company’s Oakes Farms, down the road. While the menu includes comfort staples like shrimp and grits and French toast, it’s built with flexibility. Dedicated vegan and gluten-free sections, a health-forward breakfast menu and bar bites like sesame-glazed tofu and grilled cauliflower make it easy for diners to tailor their meals.
Pastry chef Kimberly Williams draws from her two decades of experience for takes on brownies and berry cobblers that are rich, nuanced—and completely vegan and gluten-free. Next door, a small marketplace lets regulars stock up on clean pantry staples, produce and prepared items for a full-circle approach. foodandthought2.com
What began as an effort to upgrade lunches at Community School of Naples, St. Ann’s and other private schools has grown into one of Naples’ most reliable spots for feel-good eats. Owner Kathleen Brennan launched Green Apron after demand grew for her better-for-you kids’ meals, where she’d swap beets for food coloring, Greek yogurt for sour cream. In
2017, she turned the concept into a cozy 20-seat East Naples cafe—with gluten-, dairy- and sugar-free fare. The kitchen’s cooking standards read like a holistic nutritionist’s dream. Food is made to order using produce from Oakes Farms; nutrient-dense staples like farro, quinoa and chia; and clean proteins like wild-caught salmon, wild shrimp and grass-fed beef. Cooking is done exclusively with extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil—no seed oils, no fillers, no preservatives. Sauces and dressings are made in-house with fresh herbs, spices and minimal added salt or sugar.
Still, the menu doesn’t shy away from bold ideas—Cuban grain bowls and veggie muffins sit comfortably alongside a rotating lineup of soups, smoothies and sandwiches. An open kitchen keeps the process transparent, while fridges hold ready-to-go family meals, cold-pressed juices, kombucha and bottles of Kathleen’s popular house-made dressings. “Fresh just tastes better,” she says. We’re inclined to agree. greenaproncafe.com

For lifelong golfer Kevin VanDuser, success on the course starts with the player’s mindset: You have to see yourself as one of the greats to swing like one. The belief drove him to launch GOATED Golf in 2023—a Bonita Springs–based brand turning putters into statement pieces.
The brand’s core line, OG Putters, sets the foundation: sleek, precision-milled blade and mallet designs that blend high-performance with everyday swagger. Collaborations with beloved local names—like Doc Ford’s Beach House and Old Corkscrew Golf Club— bring a sense of place to GOATED’s national following. But its momentum comes from bold, monthly drops of limited-run designs inspired by iconic athletes, teams, films and cultural moments.
April’s release included a pinstripe nod for Yankees fans; May brought The Force, a Star Wars–themed design riffing on “May the Fourth Be With You,” complete with coordinating head covers, ball markers, grips and tees. Each capsule includes 100 to 300 putters.
Whether you’re playing 18 or just want to look like you could, these putters bring a bit of swagger to every swing. goated.golf
