A few days later, they drove to Punta Rassa and took the ferry to Sanibel, where they wandered around the lighthouse and surrounding property. “Little did I know that six years later, I would be moving into the building I was walking under,” he says.

LeBuff joined the staff of the wildlife refuge in 1958 and moved his young family into the assistant keeper’s quarters. “The water was not the best in the world,” he recalls, and the family lived without air conditioning until he purchased a window unit in 1967. Despite the heat and the pesky mosquitoes, his interest in the lighthouse turned into a lifelong passion.

He penned several books on the topic, including The Sanibel Island Lighthouse: A Complete History. He and his family eventually moved to more modern housing on Sanibel in 1979, and LeBuff served as a city council member from 1974 to 1980. He also represented the Sanibel lighthouse Charles LeBuff and his family lived on-site from 1958 to 1979.

“It’s ripe to become a nautical history museum,” Darby says. She notes that the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village has collections of memorabilia that could be beautifully displayed at the lighthouse. One of those objects is the third replacement of the Fresnel lens, designed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel, and referred to as the invention that saved a million ships, since it allowed for light to project in a single direction for several miles, even through dense fog.

LeBuff would also like to see the living quarters restored and an interpretive history experience developed.

While there are no fundraising efforts for preservation at the moment, LeBuff and Darby remain hopeful about a possible windfall someday. “I would love to see a lighthouse lover with deep pockets come forward,” Darby says. “The bones are there and the knowledge [of what needs to happen] is here.”

When singer-songwriter Jan Edwards stumbled upon a 1,450-square-foot space in the Naples Art District, she knew she’d hit pay dirt. Where others might get hung up on the storage-unit vibe, Edwards, who’s been coming to Naples regularly with family since childhood, only saw the potential for an incredible creative space—at first just for her own songwriting, but over time she started to envision the space being filled with other artists and musicians. Maybe it was her background—she’s a former art director for companies like Target and Marshall Field’s, and for the past ten years she’s lived on and off in Nashville, where she’s active in the country music scene—but she didn’t think twice before signing on the dotted line and purchasing the place in January 2020.

Together, they set about designing MuseBox—Edwards’ personal studio, which also doubles as a community arts center, gallery and event space. Make no mistake—this was never going to be a beige box. “When you meet Jan, you immediately see this larger-than-life, colorful personality,” Liegeois says. “She loves color.” Channeling that aesthetic, they set about layering in an abundance of hues, patterns and textures. The process, Edwards says, developed organically, with Jakob Schlaepfer wallpaper serving as a jumping-off point. “I saw this cool wallpaper Judith chose for the wet bar area in her showroom, and I looked through the sample book—Jakob Schlaepfer’s wallpapers are wild! The wallpaper sets the tone.”

Ingrown Toenails

Heel Pain

An ingrown toenail is the result of the nails curving downward and growing into the skin, usually at the nail borders. This irritates the skin, creates pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected toe. If a break is caused in the skin by an ingrown nail, bacteria may enter and cause the area around it to become infected. Even if you are not experiencing pain, your toe may still be infected. Never ignore an ingrown nail as a prolonged infection can spread and may lead to serious complications.

Heel pain is most often caused by the inflammation of the plantar fascia (plantar fasciitis), a condition that is sometimes also called heel spur syndrome when a spur is present. Heel pain may also be due to other causes, such as a stress fracture, hammertoes, tendonitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, nerve irritation or, rarely, a cyst.

However, left untreated issues can begin to extend to the arch of the foot, or other parts of your leg. It is always recommended to have these injuries evaluated by ankle or foot specialists that can use X-rays, MRI, or diagnostic ultrasounds to diagnose a problem. For treatment, 85 to 90 percent of patients do well with conservative care.

Bunions Bunions come in different sizes and shapes. Signs and symptoms include a bump on the outside of the base of the big toe, swelling or redness around the big toe joint, and pain. Bunions commonly take years to form but eventually they can become so painful that even walking can be difficult.

With all the different remedies available to ease bunion pain and prevent it from becoming worse – painkillers, shoes with wide toe boxes, bunion pads, shoe inserts, splints — surgery is still the most effective solution. Our doctors will discuss surgical and non-surgical options that best match your condition.

Minimal Invasive Surgery (M.I.S) - Unlike the traditional surgical methods of removing a bunion, minimally invasive bunion surgery leaves very little, if any, scarring on the foot. A tiny incision is made that requires only 1 or 2 stitches to close. Compared to a traditional bunionectomy, there is less swelling, little to no pain, and a shorter recovery period allowing patients to return to their regular activities sooner.

Lapiplasty (3D bunion correction) - A 3D bunion correction means the procedure corrects the deformity in all 3 planes by addressing the root cause, resulting in permanent correction of the bunion. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, allowing patients to return home that same day. Minimal pain is associated with recovery.

Patients can resume walking with a boot in two weeks for a duration of 6-8 weeks. Swelling and numbness are the most common occurrences after surgery. Swelling may last for up to a year.

Numbness should resolve over time.

Foot Problems Caused by Diabetes One of the leading causes of foot problems is Diabetes. Blood flow to your feet is restricted making it difficult for your body to heal an injury or resist infection. Additionally, diabetes can cause nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) which takes away the feeling in your feet. This could lead to complications resulting in amputation. Our doctors are trained in Microsurgical Limb Reconstruction to treat patients with peripheral neuropathy. If you are diabetic or pre-diabetic, you should see a podiatrist every 6 months minimum!
