INFO

LETTER from the Chair Recreation provides immeasurable value to the physical and mental well-being of individuals, families and the community as a whole. PARC is responsible for providing and maintaining community parks, trails, water access points and facilities and provides recreation programs and services to the communities of Salt Spring Island. To make it easier for participants to find, learn about, and register for PARC programs, we have moved all of our dryland programming and registrations to the Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre and extended operating hours so that the pool is now open seven days a week. In addition, we have launched a new website with the convenience of online registration. Your PARC commissioners and team of staff are dedicated to meeting the recreational needs and supporting the well-being of the community. Thank you for your support and participation in active living.

PROGRAMS

Q: How long have you been coming to the pool? I came to the pool for the first time at the beginning of May 2018. Q: What made you decide to start swimming? Health issues brought on by strokes and arthritis were irritating me. Daily walking had become very painful and did not address many of my needs. My physician Manya Sadouski, and Physiotherapist, Dan Spiess, suggested the Aquafit classes. Q: What benefits have you experienced from coming to the pool? Core strength, endurance and flexibility are returning. It is also much safer, easier and more fun to do balance exercises in the pool with the lifeguards watching out for me. In the pool, I can again happily walk, run, dance and sometimes even swim for hours without pain. Q: What is your favourite thing about the pool? Brenda Akerman’s Aquafit classes are so well-planned , directed and FUN that sometimes you forget how hard you are working. In the two classes that I participate in thrice weekly there are around a hundred of us puffing away as we sing to the music. Everyone is very supportive. Q: What would you tell other who haven’t been to the pool? Come and join in the fun!

SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER, 2018 | GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD

Be Water Wise

Use Only What You Need Water is a precious resource and supplies on Salt Spring are much more limited than in other parts of BC. Please join islanders as we work together to ensure that this summer, and every summer, we use this limited resource wisely. Try these conservation tips: • Keep showers short. • Run only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines. • Shut off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, and washing. • Flush less often. • Inform guests about our island’s limited water supply, and ask them to be part of the solution.

Together we can make a difference
