Rainbow Road

Aquatic Centre On April 1, 2018 the Capital Regional District assumed the operation of the Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre. The operating contract was held by an off-island private contractor since opening in 2008. At that time, outsourcing was viewed as a less expensive and lower financial risk option for the start–up of a new facility. However, an opportunity existed to decrease operating costs long term, while improving service offerings by moving away from a “fee for service” contract model that no longer offered the Salt Spring

Island community the best value. Under the new model, the Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre will increase operating hours and recreational programs. The new service level will include: • Additional full-time, part-time and auxiliary positions at competitive salaries • The addition of 8 weekly hours including opening on Saturdays • Additional weekly aquatic fitness, leadership and swim lesson program offerings

• The annual pool shutdown will be April 1 – 20th. • After April 21st, 2018 the pool will be open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays!

Open House

Come join us for an Open House event on April 21st to celebrate the re-opening of the Rainbow Road Aquatic Centre! Free Swim 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 pm and Open House1 pm - 3pm.

PARC has many things we can offer a partnership such as our online registration program, office staff who can answer questions seven days a week, facility space, marketing experience and course information in the Parc Guide that is printed three times a year. We can also help you to offer new classes that need start up equipment or materials. PARC is dedicated to offering courses that are affordable to the community and ensuring accessibility through the Leisure Economic Access Policy for low-income individuals and families. We want to partner with instructors to increase recreational program offerings, without competing with pre-existing programming in the community.

If you are interested in working with PARC, fill out our new program application online www.ssiparc.ca or call 250-537-1402 to speak with the Recreation Program Assistant.

Maxwell Lake Please Respect the Watershed PROTECT OUR WATER SUPPLY Together, the Maxwell Lake, Rippon Creek, and Larmour Creek watersheds total nearly 540 acres and make up the water supply area for Maxwell Lake. These watersheds are valuable natural assets that provide important ecosystem services such as natural filtration of the runoff that refills Maxwell Lake each year. In addition to supplying water to many island homes, farms, and businesses, the water supply area contains sensitive wetland and Garry Oak ecosystems and provides critical habitat for a number of rare species including the Northern Red-legged Frog. Both islanders and tourists alike have an important role to play in watershed protection by honouring the fact that these watersheds are not open to the public for walking, hiking, swimming, picnicking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, motor biking, ATV riding or any other activity. Use of the watershed increases the danger of wildfire and creates pathways that provide a direct route for nutrients and sediment to enter the lake during the rainy season. This nutrient loading negatively impacts water quality in the short and long term. Healthy and intact watersheds help to filter and purify runoff before it reaches the lake; damage to the watershed will directly result in decreased water quality and increased future treatment costs in order to meet the appropriate standards and regulations for drinking water. The North Salt Spring Waterworks District appreciates your cooperation in our ongoing efforts to preserve this valuable natural resource.
