The Gulf Islands truly are lovely all year round, but it’s hard to deny the special holiday feeling when the sun comes out for the season and the longest days of the year stretch the possibilities for outdoor enjoyment to the maximum. Shops and services are open for more hours, events are plentiful and outdoor cafe patios are bursting with customers. Plentiful island hikes and beaches are ready to explore. See local tourist info centres for up-to-date trail and beach access maps. Art, music and community events are also getting into full swing for summer. The Artcraft show and sale opens for the 2019 season on June 7 and runs through Sept. 15 at Salt Spring’s historic Mahon Hall, showcasing crafts made by 100plus different artists from the Gulf Islands. The Salt Spring Photofest is premiering this year, and will bring photographic art to every major gallery and cafe on the island. Two anchoring shows featuring the joint founding groups will be exhibiting at Gallery 8 and ArtSpring beginning on June 13 and running to June 26. One of the best ways to get a taste of all the southern Gulf Islands in a short time is the Tour des Îles Festival. Running from June 21-23 this year, it features passenger ferry service between ports on Salt Spring, Pender, Saturna, Mayne, and Galiano islands. Each island has its own special events timed for the festival, with ambassadors at the docks helping visitors plan their day. On many of the islands, courtesy shuttles with knowledgeable and friendly local drivers will take passengers to island attractions, such as art galleries, markets and natural wonders. Pre-registration for trips is advised, but those willing to make plans on the fly can usually buy tickets at the dock when space allows. For more information see www.tourdesiles.ca.
