LOVE STORY

JOELY & BEN High school sweethearts start their happily ever after


Joely Pugh was suspicious. Ben Sellers, her boyfriend since the 10th grade, suggested eating at The Chimneys Restaurant in Gulfport on Jan. 20, 2018 — and she thought a proposal could be imminent. However, her best friend was out of town and assured Pugh it wouldn’t happen without her. Plus, Pugh’s mom was supposed to be attending a birthday party that night. But before Pugh had finished prepping for the evening, her mom turned up — as did a driver who was waiting for her outside. In the car, she found a sweet letter from Sellers, recounting their relationship and citing Bible verses about marriage. “We turned down to the causeway by Popp’s Ferry bridge, and I could see Ben standing on a pier with candles and lights,” Pugh recalls. “I got out of the car, and he took me around the pier and talked about how amazing it was this moment was finally here after loving each other for so many years. He read one more Bible verse, and he asked me to marry him!” Although she attended Biloxi High and he went to Gulfport, school rivalries were forgotten when the pair met through mutual friends. They dated throughout high school and during their time at Mississippi State University, where Pugh says they fell more in love. “What I love most about Ben is his selflessness,” she gushes about her groom. “He is such a hard-working man, and he puts others before himself every time.” The couple were married at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Gulfport on Dec. 15, 2018, one week after their seven-year anniversary, and a reception followed at the Event Centre at CLIMB CDC. The moment that stands out for Pugh was seeing Sellers for the first time during a first-look reveal that afternoon. “I started to tear up even when I was still 50 yards away with him turned around…,” she recalls. “Seeing my soon-to-be husband on the day of our wedding was so surreal!” The celebration was filled with special touches to honor people and places that are meaningful to the couple, according to the bride. For instance, Ben’s groom’s cake and several photos on display paid homage to Mississippi State, and Pugh’s sorority sisters encircled and sang to the pair. Lost loved ones were remembered with altar flowers. “We chose to use The Mississippi Gulf Coast book of photos by Timothy Isbell for our guests to sign on our favorite photos of the Gulf Coast,” the bride adds. “We both grew up here and returned to start our professional careers, so it is a very special place to us.” After honeymooning at Secrets Wild Orchid Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the couple has settled in Gulfport. Sellers works as a civil engineer at Machado Patano in Biloxi while his wife is an academic advisor at the University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Reflecting on their journey so far, Pugh says, “Those seven years were so special, but I have to say this time as newlyweds is my favorite!”

Brides find expertise, huge selection at Heritage House

W

hen building a registry, says Heritage House Gifts owner Stacy Pair, brides should stay true to their own taste. “Don’t be afraid of color,” Pair also advises, “and if you are going to inherit your mother’s or grandmother’s china, do not be afraid to pick vibrant new pieces to begin traditions for yourself.” The store, located on Pass Road in Gulfport, carries items to suit any style and budget, Pair says, and a knowledgeable staff will take the time to help soon-to-bewed patrons prepare for their big day. “Some of our bridal consultants have been working with brides for more than a dozen years, and they love helping a bride put together a registry that works for (her),” she says. “Heritage House Gifts also has an eclectic assortment of choices ranging from Herend, Royal Crown Derby, Deshoulieres and French Limoges porcelain to more moderately priced choices such as Casafina, CostaNova and Le Crueset.” A growing trend Pair is noticing among modern, young brides is the mixing of formal and casual china patterns. This practice allows them to incorporate their inherited pieces with new ones. As for color, “White is still ruling the table,” Pair says, “but we are seeing some infusion of colors starting to peek in — especially grey and blues.” Whatever home goods or décor elements a bride desires, she’s likely to find exactly what she wants among Heritage House’s extensive inventory. This timeframe is the most critical when it comes to planning your wedding.

From a practical perspective if you are not an organized person, you should immediately hire a planner or a consultant to help guide you through the process. Many planners on the Coast also do fullservice design so you can have your cake and eat it too by telling the designer what you want and letting them assist you with all of the details. In some cases, a caterer or reception venue coordinator can help you with some details (linen choices, rental items, room layouts or seating plans). But generally, you want your chosen vendors to focus on what they are good at. These are the items you should deal with immediately because in most cases, there are limited options depending on the size of your wedding. During this time period you should: Book your ceremony and reception venues. Select and inform your attendants. Begin developing your budget. Start your guest list. Interview and book the following: • Planner • Band/DJ • Caterer • Photographer • Videographer • Officiant

Purchase your dress. MONTHS Select your wedding party’s attire. Dress availability and alterations can take up to six months, so start this item as soon as possible. Have your guys fitted for their tuxedos as soon as possible as well. Set up your wedding website, hashtag and handles. Register at a minimum of three major retailers with online offerings and at least one local gift registry store. Plan for your out-of-town guests. Reserve a block of hotel rooms at several different hotels with varying price points. These hotels should be as close to reception location as possible. Settle on an invitation design and begin the proofing process. Your invitation may go through several renditions before it’s just right, so give yourself plenty of time. If you are planning on having your invitations hand addressed, hire a calligrapher now. Start planning the honeymoon. Make sure your passport and any necessary shots are up to date if you will be traveling out of the country.

Settle on the guest list and reserve the venue. Finalize invitations and place the order. Some processes can take up to four weeks to print, so give yourself plenty of time to mail.

Print programs. Purchase wedding rings. Meet with your planner or other wedding pros and finalize your day-of schedule. Type up the timeline and send it to all of your vendors (this includes photographer, caterer, baker, decorator and church coordinator). The more you plan, the less stress and drama there is on the day of. Finalize the menu and flowers. If you are having a number of out-of-town guests, plan welcome gift bags. These need be as simple as a bottle of water, a few snacks and a list of some of the more popular tourist sites where you live.

Take note of these top floral trends by Rachel Bond Owner/designer, Pine Hills Floral Designs Brides are saying “I do” to greenery and making other unconventional choices when it comes to their wedding flowers. Here are some of the major trends that are gaining traction:

1. MONOCHROMATIC COLOR SCHEMES

Whether neutral or vibrant, monochromatic color schemes definitely are trending. Instead of adding interest with contrasting color, couples are choosing to stay within the same tone.

2. DRIED GRASSES AND FLOWERS

Dried flowers and grasses are a great way to add interesting texture as mentioned above. Pampas grass popularity is on the rise, especially for fall weddings. Lavender, pods and berries also are great to use when dried.

Photo booths still are as popular as ever at weddings. Now more and more couples are using floral backdrops to set their photo ops apart.

With greenery being all the rage, we’re seeing a shift from soft, garden style greenery to tropical plants and foliage. Couples can draw the eye into an arrangement or bouquet with many different shapes and colors. Plants can transform a room without breaking the bank, and they’re also an ecofriendly way to bring drama to a venue.


LICENSE

License Requirements Marriage license requirements are the same for all counties in Mississippi. As of July 2012, blood tests and waiting periods were removed from the list of requirements. Here is a list of things you need: • • • •

Both parties must appear in person at the Circuit Clerk’s office in the county you reside and present the following information: Proof of age (driver’s license, military ID, birth certificate — any official document evidencing age) and fee (varies by county) If either party has been divorced within the last six months, a copy of the divorce decree is required. If either applicant is under 21 years of age, parental consent is required: a female applicant must be at least 15 years of age to apply; a male applicant must be at least 17 years of age to apply. What to consider before booking a band John Hozey Jr., manager and owner of Blue Earth Productions, tells us about his bands — D”ivine” Play (www.dplayband.com), GOT Groove (www.gotgroovenola.com) and Blue Rhythm (www.bluerhythmnola.com) — and offers advice about choosing wedding entertainment. GCW: TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BANDS AND WHAT TYPE OF EVENTS THEY PERFORM.

HOZEY: All three of my groups are party/variety bands, meaning we have developed ourselves to have a wide variety of music that is targeted to appeal to nearly every age and keep a party going. Anything from Frank Sinatra to Cardi B, we’ve got it and do it well.

GCW: HOW OFTEN DO YOUR BANDS PERFORM AT WEDDINGS?

HOZEY: D”ivine” Play is doing between 60-70 weddings a year, GOT Groove between 40-50 and Blue Rhythm is on pace for 20 in their first year.

GCW: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE BRIDES WHEN BOOKING THEIR ENTERTAINMENT?

HOZEY: Entertainment truly can be the one thing where quality correlates directly with price, so keep that in mind. We employ six-plus people, including sound and lighting techs, for each show. Musicians are not a dime a dozen, and that guitar player you heard at a bar once rip a Grateful Dead or Jimi Hendrix solo might have only one trick up his sleeve. To play in a truly successful party/dance band, you have to be versatile and open to everything. That makes putting together an amazing band so much tougher because you are limited to who is available and able. The players who are good enough need incentive not to jump to other bands or go out on tour, so they must be paid well. Remember, a lot of the good players are fulltime musicians and invest a lot of time into learning your songs and keeping their skills sharp. I will guarantee that the $6,000 band always will be leagues above the $2,000 or even $3,000 bands. If you are dealing with a budget below $3,000, I would consider a DJ due to quality control. P. 38

Another thing to consider and ask your potential vendor about, especially if they are less expensive, is consistency. How often do they sub, and what is their backup plan if someone has to sub? For the good bands, you are paying a premium for that consistency. For example, with our bands, we have a tight sub policy to maintain integrity. For the players to buy in, they must feel like it’s worth it to make that commitment and miss out on other opportunities because they are very talented. To take that a step further, the top groups have a database of qualified subs that can jump in and keep the quality of the show on a very high level. This is so important because we are human; there will be moments where people will be out, although not often, and that’s the reality. Great groups prepare for this.

GCW: IF A BRIDE IS LEANING TOWARD A DJ, HOW WOULD YOU CONVINCE HER TO HIRE A BAND? HOZEY: The top reason is energy. You can’t compare the energy and engagement of six-plus musicians grooving hard and front men/women singing and engaging with the crowd. That would be the main reason, and that’s not even a debate. Most brides want to hire a DJ because they have more options song-wise. Although that is true to a point, great bands counter that in two ways. They have a song lists of over 300 tunes spanning every genre and decade. When you only need 50-60 songs in a night, you certainly will find your flow within most set lists and can trust that they have built a sufficient database. Also, we do provide break-time DJ services, so for songs you won’t find on our list that are must-plays, you either can have us learn them (up to three songs) or put them on the DJ playlist for that break — best of both worlds.

It’s finally here! You are in love, engaged and ready to walk hand in hand into life with your fiancé. After a few weeks, the planning starts, and you find yourself left with more questions than answers. It happens to almost every bride. The options are endless, and everyone is giving you advice or opinions. I’m no expert on all things wedding, but one thing I do know is wedding cakes.

Getting Started

The best way to start planning your wedding cake is simply to look through various inspiration sources, such as Pinterest or The Knot. Save the images that contain elements that speak to you. No one knows your style better than you. Being prepared with styles and colors helps tremendously when it comes to designing your cake. Determining your budget is essential at this stage. Set a figure before meeting with vendors to keep your wedding on track and avoid overspending and stress.

Decisions, decisions

Before meeting with a cake designer, make sure you are prepared to answer questions accurately. Your answers will determine not only the design, but the price of the cake as well. Standard questions are as follows: How many guests will you be serving? Will you have a groom’s cake? Are you planning on saving your top tier? Will alcohol be served? Do you have a budget set?

Finding the perfect baker y

With your plan in hand, make appointments with local bakeries. Yes, actually go to the bakery; do not call or email requesting a quote. When pricing is not provided in person, it may be generalized and not give you adequate information. Meet with more than one cake designer to determine who would best execute your vision. Look through their work and taste samples before making any decisions. Ensure that whatever vendor you choose, if not a brick-and-mortar location, has all the proper credentials, such as a Mississippi Department of Health license, a retail sales permit and insurance. A wedding cake is a large investment and should be approached as such. Read the business’s contract at the consultation. It is important that a contract is put in place to protect your investment. If your bakery needs to coordinate with another vendor, such as a florist, provide that information at the time of booking.

Location, location, location

Always think about the big picture when planning your cake. Consider the location of your event. If it is a private location, rather than a traditional venue, make sure the P. 40

road is in good shape before the wedding with no muddy potholes. You wouldn’t want a cake disaster to happen in the driveway. Do you have the cake table with linens ready? The wedding cake usually is a focal point of the reception and should be treated accordingly. This masterpiece should always be placed on its own decent-size table to keep it safe from guest disruption. Bear in mind that your cake is fragile. Are you having an outdoor wedding? If so, just remember that icing contains oil. Oil liquefies when exposed to heat. To avoid a catastrophe, have an air- conditioned location where your cake can be stored until just before time to cut it.

Most of all, enjoy the work of art you designed. The biggest compliment you can give your baker after the wedding is telling others how much you loved your cake. It is always nice to hear new clients say that they sought you out due to rave reviews from a previous wedding.


Rental company makes weddings as easy as ‘ABC’ David Delk, president of ABC Rental, tells Gulf Coast Weddings about his company, located at 3000 Hewes Ave., Gulfport, with two more locations in Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs. GCW: What does ABC Rental offer, and how long has it been in operation? We offer quality rental items for weddings and events. Why pay full price when you can rent for a fraction of the cost and not have to store it? We add new items to our inventory monthly to keep up with the trends in this market. We are celebrating our 51st year in business. We opened in 1968 and have been family owned since day one. GCW: How often does your business do weddings, and what does that typically entail? We have at least one wedding per weekend, even on holiday weekends, and up to five or six. This includes weddings in which the customer will pick up the items and return them, or we deliver and set up. We offer many things for many different budgets.

GCW: If a bride wants to book your company for her wedding, how far in advance should she be contacting you? What will you go over during a consultation? We suggest (booking) at least 90 days before the event, but event then, items may not be available. We’ve booked events two years in advance. To reserve any item, simply place a onethird deposit on the rentals, and we’ll hold those items for your event. During the initial consultation, we can create a drawing of the reception using our CAD program. We also can show samples of the linens we carry (so many styles), and of course, show you items you are interested in. GCW: What other advice would you give brides who are considering using a rental company for their big day? Don’t do what others do. Mix it up,

and make it your own wedding — a different color linen, a different chair for your reception or a new archway that you’ve seen in pictures in other markets. Do something that represents you. We’ll help you keep in your budget. GCW: Anything else Gulf Coast Wedding readers should know about you or your business? TOP-TIER TRAVEL Couple finds paradise on Turks and Caicos

Between the perfect weather, picturesque beaches and celebratory atmosphere, Megan Pearson only wishes she could have stayed longer on Turks and Caicos. “It was really like being in paradise,” says the newlywed, who married Kyle Pearson Nov. 10, 2018, at the Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort. About 25 friends and family members attended the destination wedding, which was planned by Pascagoula-based travel agent Jessica Drongowski. “It was a great experience to share with our loved ones, and having them there made it even more fun,” says Pearson, a dentist who lives in Ocean Springs. “It was also amazing to get married on the most beautiful beach with the sunset as the background.” When discussing where to hold the nuptials, Pearson says Drongowski highly recommended Turks and Caicos for its kid friendliness — and its unrivaled ocean clarity. “The water was unlike anything we have ever seen,” Pearson says. “It was so clear you could see the bottom of the ocean floor.” P. 42

Among Pearson’s favorite activities were a daylong boat expedition to Iguana Island, which included snorkeling for conch shells, visiting with the iguanas and a stop at Seashell Island to eat conch ceviche and search for shells. Temperatures stayed between 70 and 84 degrees, and rare rain showers lasted 15 minutes or less, Pearson says. She describes the resort staff as friendly and accommodating, with tips not permitted outside of the spa. Guests could walk into any restaurant and order whatever they liked, according to Pearson, because food and drinks were all inclusive at the venue. Overall, she adds, a destination wedding can be a budget-friendly option for any couple. “Jessica helped us plan the wedding during the off season,” Pearson says, “so we were able to get the wedding, cocktail reception, rehearsal dinner and wedding reception included at no additional charge — just the cost of staying at the resort for three nights.” While Drongowski made most of the arrangements, Pearson notes that a

wedding planner on Turks and Caicos helped coordinate with the resort team. The Pearsons have trusted Drongowski with their travel to other destinations, such as Disney World, a Disney Cruise, and Universal Studios. The travel agent has proven helpful and responsive, according to Pearson, and executed their wedding plans flawlessly. “We would not change anything,” she says. CAPTURE YOUR DAY Be sure your photographer knows what is most special to you

Here are some suggestions that will ensure you get the best photos representing your big day. • A solid timeline of wedding events. Include ceremony times and highlights and make sure this timeline includes the names of your bridal party and important family members. For the reception part, actual times (e.g.: “8:12 — first dance”) are less important than an order of events. Your planner will help you stay on track and will make sure all parties needed for the photos are present. • Have a meeting with your photographer to go over exactly what is most important to you. For instance, if your veil was worn by your grandmother, you will want to be sure your photographer knows this so they will make sure it gets the attention it needs. • Don’t burden your photographer with too many details like handing them a list with 100 “must have” photos. Of that 100, probably 75 of them are obvious. You want your photographer focused on the events around you, not focusing on a piece of paper. While it may seem really obvious what photos you want, sometimes a list does help narrow what is most important.
