KNEE PAIN

IS CRAMPING YOUR STYLE? By Michael J. Stonnington, MD

Memorial Physician Clinics – Stonnington Orthopedics & Joint Replacement

Are you suffering from pain in your knees? Is it cramping your style? It may be due to arthritis, injury or overuse. Whatever the cause, there is help available to lessen pain, increase mobility and improve quality of life. Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis, is also known as degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis and is caused by deterioration of the cartilage. It impacts more than 27 million Americans. Projections show around 1.26 million total knee arthoplasty (TKA) procedures will be performed annually by 2030. Approximately 4.7 million people are living with a TKA, and of that number, 3 million are women and 1.7 million are men. Therefore, women undergo this surgery at a substantially higher rate than men.

THE KNEE IS ONE OF THE JOINTS MOST AFFECTED BY OA Knee pain can range from mild to severe to disabling. If you are suffering from OA, it can be initially treated with measures that do not require surgery. Arthritis medications such as acetaminophen, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) like ibuprofen and naproxen, or steroid joint injections, physical therapy, and even weight loss, can offer relief. Over time, the cartilage “wears away” or deteriorates the joint preventing easy gliding, and more effort is required from the surrounding muscles to move the affected joint. This may cause pain that is hard to get under control or limit your range of motion making it difficult to move around easily or unaided. That is when it may be time to consider surgery. The knee joint is a weight-bearing joint. For every pound that you are overweight, your knee experiences an extra four pounds of weight with walking. For example, if you are 30 pounds overweight, your knee sees an extra 120 pounds of weight with walking, and an extra 210 pounds with jogging! It’s not hard to imagine why the knee is so prone to osteoarthritis. The surgical management of knee osteoarthritis involves several options such as realignment procedures, arthroscopy, partial knee replacement and total knee replacement — also known as total

WHY DO MORE WOMEN UNDERGO SURGERY? It is not fully understood why women outnumber men in regard to total knee replacement, but there are some hypotheses. It is known that there are obvious differences between men and women regarding the shape and size of the knee. These anatomic differences between the genders may biomechanically predispose women to the development of osteoarthritis. Whatever your gender, the bottom line is that the “right fit” is necessary for a good TKA outcome. While considering a knee replacement, talk to your family and primary care doctor, then choose an experienced joint replacement surgeon to get the “right fit” for your knee. It’s time to put your best knee forward!

knee arthroplasty or TKA. Knee replacements are very successful procedures, with nearly 800,000 performed annually. With evolving technology in robotics, such as the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted TKA, many people can return to an active, pain-free life after recovery. The robotic technology allows a surgeon to precisely plan the appropriate total knee arthroplasty size and its placement immediately before a surgical procedure. Robotics are then utilized to perform the surgery, which means less risk to surrounding tissues because of the advanced precision capabilities. Data shows promising outcomes for this pioneering procedure.

NEARLY 2 DECADES IN THE MAKING, MUSEUM TRIBUTE TO ‘BROWN CONDOR’ OPENING BY JENNIFER GENTILE

TICKETS

John C. Robinson “Brown Condor” Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum 429 Pass Road, Gulfport www.browncondorassociation.com/Museum. Admission prices: adults $14, children $8, veterans $9. (This is subject to change depending on COVID-19 restrictions). For more details or to contribute to the effort, contact Francisco Gonzalez, project manager, at Gonzaflex1@aol.com or (601) 2992816.

16

September 2020

It started like most successful projects — with a need, a dream and a passion. And despite several setbacks, including a global pandemic, the John C. Robinson “Brown Condor” Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum remains poised for takeoff. Phase 1 is set to open on Sept. 1, COVID-19 conditions permitting. The museum, a dream dating back to 2001, is housed in a former furniture store at 429 Pass Road in Gulfport — on the approach end of the runways at the GulfportBiloxi International Airport. Project manager Francisco Gonzalez got involved in the project when his wife, Rosemary Roosa, invited him to join the John C. Robinson “Brown Condor” Association board in 2005. The board is the brainchild of several black community leaders who wished to honor John C. Robinson, the first African-American pilot to fight in combat in a foreign war. Raised in Gulfport, Robinson enlisted in the Ethiopian Air Force of Emperor Haile Selassie in 1935, joining the fight against Italian fascist forces. Upon returning to the U.S., Robinson promoted aviation among African-Americans. His efforts helped shape the aviation training program at Tuskegee Institute, which produced the legendary Tuskegee Airmen. “The Board of Directors felt the story of John C. Robinson ought to be told,” Gonzalez says. “Later, they felt that Mississippi and Mississippians have contributed so much to aviation worldwide that we as a state should have a place to tell their stories — thus, the Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum.” The museum features more than 16 exhibit halls for kids and adults to explore with their eyes minds and hands, according to Gonzalez, including a main aircraft hall, a mechanics bay, a Mississippi bases gallery, a control tower, a parachute exhibit, a flight simulator exhibit, a NASA and rocket exhibit, an aviation art exhibit, a Hurricane Hunters exhibit, a Tuskegee Airmen exhibit, a Mississippi Aviation Hall of Fame exhibit, a Mississippi Agricultural Aviation exhibit, a uniform gallery and a John C. Robinson exhibit. There’s also an aerodynamics STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) area, a Mississippi State University aeronautics exhibit and more. Displays pay tribute to numerous aviation achievers and pioneers, including Apollo astronauts Fred Haise and Stu Roosa, shuttle astronauts Donald Peterson and Richard Truly, the Key Brothers, Roscoe Turner and Jesse Brown. Some display items were bought from local and national vendors, Gonzalez says, but most were donations. What really makes the museum come to life, he adds, is the influence and guidance of God. “For example, we would get a donation of floor tiles of many colors; we would start laying the tile on a particular gallery, and it would take the last tile available to complete that particular gallery,” he says. “I call that ‘God incidences,’ and you can see them throughout the museum.” One of the greatest challenges, according to the project manager, has been convincing those in power that with community support and enthusiasm behind it, the museum wouldn’t require millions of dollars to reach fruition. However, donations of money, time and materials have been essential. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project lost much of its volunteer force, including military personnel stationed on the Coast. “This is the beginning of a beautiful legacy we’re leaving for our children and grandchildren,” he says. “It’s unbelievable that we got it done against all odds.” John Charles Robinson of Gulfport was an American aviator and activist who was hailed as the “Brown Condor” for his service in the Imperial Ethiopian Air Force against Fascist Italy.

Reimagined

Artist Teri Strauss Gandour gives colorful garments new life in museum mural

BY JENNIFER GENTILE

As she combed through piles of old Mardi Gras costumes, artist Teri Strauss Gandour continuously found items that made her smile and evoked thoughts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. A broken crown, shimmering gold fabric and rhinestone trim became the Biloxi lighthouse. A sequined-lined penguin came to represent the Mississippi Aquarium. Pink and purple fabrics reminded her of the colors in coastal sunsets. After more than 200 hours of creative work, twice as many as Gandour expected, the mural project she’d undertaken for the Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum was complete by May 21 — the museum’s reopening day. “There were several challenges on this adventure; hot glue is not my best friend, and hammering nails through layers of fabric can be painful, especially while standing on a tall ladder,” the artist says. Nonetheless, Gandour adds, “It was fun; I learned a lot and have not regretted a moment of this experience.” Andi Oustalet, Mardi Gras Museum Board of Directors president, got the idea for a mural made of unclaimed, donated and damaged costumes while visiting a Napa Valley winery. She recruited longtime friend Gandour for the project in November 2019 — knowing she could “turn her loose” with very little instruction. “Teri never disappoints; she really went above and beyond and created a coastal scene that I wasn’t expecting.,” Oustalet says. “I love all of the components of the Coast that she has captured, and it really tells a story.”

20

September 2020

Although she can’t remember a time when she wasn’t fascinated by visual arts, Gandour’s formal training is limited to her fifth-grade and junior high art teachers. Growing up, she made greeting cards for her parents on special occasions and designed Barbie clothes as a creative outlet. “This love of fashion and textiles has stayed with me in one way or another throughout my life,” she says, “including making many children’s costumes, opening and owning a boutique for eight years and most recently using unusual materials in creating event-specific costumes.” In the Mardi Gras Museum’s theater room, contractors used four plywood panels to create a sturdy base for Gandour’s 8-by-16-foot mural. Museum Executive Director Tammy Smith and museum employee Anne-Marie Leckich helped cut out sequined designs, rhinestone trim and large sections of velvet, chiffon and other fabrics. “Next, (Oustalet’s daughter) Kate helped me adhere the first background layer of fabric to represent my concept for the sky, sunsets, sand and water,” Gandour says. “The rest of the design ideas were constantly changing as my vision for the mural evolved.” Visitors can view the mural at the museum, located at 792 Howard Ave., Biloxi, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The cost is $8 for general admission, $7 for military and seniors and $5 for children 12 and younger.

SERVING THOSE WHO SERVE

Deborah Brockway, Morale, Welfare and Recreation director at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport

Navy MWR director focuses on caring for military members and the people they rely on BY RYAN LABADENS

S

ervice is one of the defining merits associated with military men and women. Those in the Armed Forces often hear, “Thank you for your service,” from people voicing their appreciation. For Deborah Brockway, Morale, Welfare and Recreation director at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, serving those who serve — and taking care of the people who serve them, namely her fellow MWR workers — has been a part of her management philosophy since she took on supervisory and director roles at Navy MWR facilities. Brockway landed her first MWR job in 1998, working as the snack bar supervisor at the bowling alley onboard Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. During her 14 years there, Brockway eventually worked her way up into other MWR management positions, working in the Chief Petty Officers Club, then becoming the business activities manager — overseeing MWR facilities such as the marina, veterinary clinic, flying club, bowling alley, golf course and movie theater. She gained much of the experience for those various roles on the job. “You kind of had to jump in with both feet, and you had to learn what was going on with them because you needed to understand the terminology for those positions,” Brockway says. She adds that communication with the subject-matter experts in those programs was key in understanding their operations, their terminology and how to help them run smoothly. “You were never going to have the respect of the staff if you couldn’t speak the same language they do,” Brockway says. “While MWR is a big family, every facility has its own language. Talking to people at the flying club and talking to people in the vet clinic, you’re talking about two completely different things, so you really had to embrace it all and humble yourself to

learn what you could from the subject-matter experts in those programs.” Brockway credits several mentors who nurtured her in her MWR career. One was Kathy Schallot, who had worked her way up from a bartender position with MWR at Whidbey Island to become fleet and family readiness director for the Pacific Northwest region. “She definitely instilled in me the work ethic and concept of the reason why we’re here,” Brockway says. “We’re here to serve the service members. What we do isn’t for us; it’s for them.” Her last MWR director at Whidbey Island, Tom Jones, shared his work philosophy with his employees — a list of five principles Brockway has adopted. “The No. 1 thing was ‘Take care of the people’ — that’s the customer — and then the second thing was ‘Take care of the people who take care of the people’; that (means) taking care of our staff because without our staff, we can’t operate,” Brockway says. “The third thing on his list was ‘Do the basics well.’ The fourth one is ‘financial accountability,’ and the fifth one is “continuous improvement.’” She seeks to instill those principles in the other MWR supervisors and workers at NCBC to inspire them to provide the best customer service possible, especially given the challenges caused by COVID-19. “Every day, we come to work, and we try to do the right thing,” Brockway says, noting that this wasn’t always easy, but something she strives for and wants to continue imparting to her workers. “That’s what we do every day; we come to work, try to do the right thing, move forward and do the best we can.” Ryan Labadens is assistant public affairs officer with Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport.

“That’s what we do every day; we come to work, try to do the right thing, move forward and do the best we can.” 22

MODERN

Classic

Owners of Pass Christian home honor past, embrace future BY JENNIFER GENTILE PHOTOGRAPHY BY TILLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Step inside, and you’re immersed in luxury. Custom skylights admit an abundance of natural light. The kitchen is equipped with high-end appliances, and a tasteful, light color palette makes the room feel fresh and bright. In the master bedroom, elegant built-ins showcase top-quality workmanship. Every inch of the Pass Christian property on Scenic Drive appears well thought out — from the designer tile flooring to the soaring ceilings. But the spot that owners Dawn and Scott Brady like best is outside. “I have to say, one our favorite activities is spending time on the front porch looking out at the Gulf,” Dawn says. “We start in the morning having our coffee and end watching the sunset in the afternoon.”

www.gcwmultimedia.com

23

Dawn was born and raised on the Coast and now lives primarily in Highland Park, Texas. However, the Bradys have been spending as much time as possible in the Pass since the home renovation was completed in 2016. “Of course, being able to return home and be near our family and friends is the most special part of owning the property,” Dawn says. “However, the beauty of the view of the Gulf and the gorgeous oak trees really make it a fantastic getaway and ultimately a beautiful place to retire.” Built in the 1940s by artist and architect James Lamantia, the approximately 3,000 square-foot home has four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. Lamantia created conceptual drawings for a rebuild after Hurricane Katrina, but he died before starting construction. Upon purchasing the property, The Bradys embarked on a total renovation of both the main house and an adjoining cottage, which faces Second Street and is where Dawn’s mother now lives. “One of the best changes was the large dormer window that was added to bring not only extra light into the space but allowed us to raise the ceilings to create a dramatic entry,” Dawn says. “It really did change the whole feel of the house and gave it the light and airy feel we were going for.” Cutting-edge conveniences, including a Lutron automation system that controls the lighting, air conditioning and window shades, take the home into the future. Meanwhile, one of owners’ favorite keepsakes — an original Lamantia painting of the street front gifted to them by the former caretaker — pays homage to the past. Classifying her style as coastal modern, Dawn appreciates the area’s historic architecture and also loves the trend toward contemporary design. “The challenge is to blend a bit of both,” she says, “and that is what we tried to accomplish with this home.”

QUALITIES YOU SHOULD BANK ON Whether making day-to-day decisions or trying to achieve long-term goals like home ownership, every choice you make is guided by your personal set of values and priorities. Why BY MICHAEL JOHNS should it be any different when choosing your banker? Aligning yourself with the right banker can prove critical in developing a foundation for your financial future. In today’s world, there is limited differentiation in banking products and services. Sure, there might be some small differences in rates and terms, but by and large, we’re fairly similar in what we provide. However, the manner in which we provide those services is what sets banks apart. Now more than ever, it is pivotal to partner with a banker who has a vested interest in your success rather than having someone simply acting as an order taker. Here are some qualities to look for when starting the conversation with a potential banker:

POSITIVITY

Whether a commercial loan credit, home construction loan or a deposit product, you want your banker to be a problem solver and solution finder. It does not take any effort or creativity to say no; however, getting to yes can take a banker with a positive outlook and experience.

CONNECTION

The best bankers are outstanding listeners and comprehend their client’s business relative to the local economy. Their perspective of how your business fits into the larger picture could give you valuable insights. A solid banker also can help connect you with people in other fields who will be valuable resources to help you better yourself or your business.

RESPONSIVENESS

In a world that is moving faster and faster, the value of having an accessible banker that can quickly meet your financial needs in a timely and decisive manner is more important than ever. As we’ve seen through the COVID-19 crisis, bankers that met the challenge head on and worked tirelessly for their clients made a difference. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but I think it will start you on the right path to identifying the best banker for you and/or your business. Not to be simplistic about it, but a banking relationship is about more than just an interest rate. In fact, it’s about more than just banking. It’s about partnership with someone you are proud to do business with and who you trust will do their best to help you succeed.

COVER STORY

DESIGNER OF

DREAMS Leah Watters brings visions to life BY JENNIFER GENTILE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN PEARSE PHOTOGRAPHY

A

s an architect, Leah Watters isn’t on the front line of any war, and rarely will someone in her line of work be called a hero. In fact, she knows her services are a luxury for most people — but they matter greatly to those who hire her. She’s creating the backdrops for celebrations and family dinners, for serious talks and lighthearted laughter. “Years from now, the home will have the smells and the memories of more than one lifetime,” Watters says. “It’s an honor that we’re invited to have such an intimate hand in crafting something so precious as a home.” Long before she earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Virginia Tech, interned in Germany and Northern Virginia and founded her own firm, Watters had picked her career path — declaring in a fourth-grade gifted class that she would become an architect. Her father told her she could be anything she wanted, and in hindsight, she would tweak his words slightly: “You can do anything you are willing to sink your all into.” “My passion for what I do is truly ridiculous,” she says. “My husband (retired Seabee Tyler Watters) often jokes that

28

September 2020

I would do it without pay – and this is probably why our business runs better with him managing it.”

ROOTED IN THE PASS

Watters has never lost her love for drawing and dreaming — for crafting spaces that help others live more beautifully. Her fondness for the Coast is ingrained, too — dating back to 2007 when she and her parents moved here to be part of the post-Katrina recovery effort. “Volunteer trips from northern Virginia to Pass Christian led (us) to fall in love with the people, the pace, the food and the beauty of south Mississippi…,” she says. “By the time volunteer and recovery needs waned in 2009, roots were too deep to think of calling home anywhere but Pass Christian.” Watters met her husband through The Gulf Coast Running Club, and they married in 2011 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Her dad and brother rebuilt the church, which sustained severe damage from Katrina’s storm surge, and Watters served as architect on the project. “The rebuilding of Trinity Church was far beyond the scope of what would be recommended for one’s first independent

project, and big lessons were learned,” she says. “God gave me grace where my experience lacked.” As she’s grown into her profession, Watters’ family has expanded, too. She and Tyler now have two boys, 6-year-old Jude and 4-year-old James, as well as a thriving business, Watters Architecture, located in Sazerac Square.

PROCEEDING WITH PASSION

When the firm was founded in 2010, Watters expected the business to just be her, working from home on a project here and there, but the team now includes three architects, a business manager and a fourlegged greeter named Tobias. During the years she managed the business alone, she was proud to be both an architect and a businessperson — two roles she considers

“It’s an honor that we’re invited to have such an intimate hand in crafting something so precious as a home.”

“separate entities.” “One entity requires that I stay on top of the latest construction materials and design techniques,” she explains. “The other requires that our relationships in the community are broad and that we do not become stagnant in our presence or lazy in our model.” To stay on the cutting edge, the firm invested three years ago in software that allows for 3D rendering, meaning clients can walk through their home from the convenience of their tablet and projects can be designed in greater detail. Technology may be crucial, but to Watters and her team, nothing is more important than listening. “Our greatest successes are on the projects when someone entrusts their full vision into our hands and partners with us in crafting a project that suits their needs,” she says. “We respect that there will be craftsmen and materials experts throughout the construction process that can improve even the best ideas.”

BALANCING ACT

Commercial projects like Friendship Oak Dormitory and the revamped façade of Pharmacy at the Bay reflect Watters’ modern, crisp and intentional aesthetic. The architect took a leap of faith with a commission for Cat Island Coffee House — basing her design on the clients’ words rather than the images of Victorian-style cafes they’d shown her. “Thankfully they were willing to trust me in the early stages,” Watters says, “because what resulted is just a gem.” For one of her favorite residential projects, the Brady home in Pass Christian, Watters had to strike a balance between Coastal styling and industrial-modern design. The clients’ engineering background ensured each detail was revisited until the right fit was achieved.

30

September 2020

“Not only is (Leah) an extremely talented architect, but she worked closely with us and addressed all our design ideas and concerns along the way,” says Dawn Brady, who owns the property with husband, Scott. “Her character is beyond compare, and it shows through in how she manages her firm.” Watters deems balance essential not only in her work, but life in general. She’s faithful first to her roles as a wife and a mother, then to the needs of her employees and clients. She’s also hugely competitive and likes winning, both with projects and in athletics, but doesn’t claim to be perfect. “I’m utterly incapable of keeping a clean desk,” she admits. “I burn pancakes more often than not. I have a sweet tooth — only slightly outweighed by my love of running.” As hard as she trains to be fast, Watters takes a patient approach to her craft. “Often when something is done with slowness,” she says, “something truly incredible emerges.”

BUILDING HAPPINESS

By the time construction starts, Watters has walked through the finished project countless times in her mind. But no model can show how sunlight will fill a room, or how a client’s face will glow when she steps inside for the first time. The architect delights in seeing her homeowners live well — whether they’re sitting on their porches in the morning as she runs by or posting photos of joyful gatherings on social media. “While others may see a frosting-filled child’s face, I beam inside thinking of every trim and framing detail, every moment with a contractor of finding the best solution and all the little details that a homeowner may not even realize we cared so much about,” she says. “And it’s all a success knowing the house is working for them.”

PUSHING THE

BOUNDARIES Madison Talley isn’t your typical architect

BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Tall Architects is an ironic name for a firm headed by a petite powerhouse. Standing 4 feet, 10 inches tall, Madision Talley says she uses her size to her advantage, as it makes her more memorable. “I also enjoy surprising people with a strong handshake,” Talley says. “My mom taught me this early on, and it’s something that I think shows people that I am a serious businessperson and shouldn’t be underestimated.” Height aside, the architect stands out with an unconventional approach to her craft. After graduating from the architecture program at Mississippi State University, she put her artistic gifts to use creating largescale art installations for Anthropologie — an international retail and lifestyle brand. She focused on art for three years and returned to architecture full time when she and her husband, Mark, started Tall Architects in 2014.

34

September 2020

When people think of architects, they may imagine someone drawing “blueprints” — which Talley finds “an antiquated way to view the industry.” “We architects do so much more than simply draw plans,” she says. “Our firm uses the latest technology to design and document a building, and we’re in near constant communication with the client, contractor and suppliers to make sure things are running smoothly and efficiently.” The wife and mother of one is not a sit-behind-a-desk sort of professional. She’s happiest building a model, researching a material, meeting with a client or walking a job site. In every project Tall takes on, Talley is heavily involved as a creative director. She deems architecture successful when it causes the viewer stop and think. “We go through the day surrounded by architecture, but a lot of the built environment just becomes a backdrop for the everyday hustle and bustle,” Talley says. “Good design makes you pause for a minute and just enjoy the space.”

NAVIGATING THE HOMEBUYING PROCESS

BERKSHIRE

MAKING AN OF FER

HomeServices

Once you find the ideal house to call home, making an offer can be an intimidating part of the buying process. In such a competitive market, making all the right decisions is essential BY AMANDA BRAY to landing your dream home. Below are four tips from Freddie Mac so you can feel more confident about making a solid offer on your next home.

HATHAWAY

Shaw Properties WHERE YOU WORK IS ALL ABOUT LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

DETERMINE YOUR PRICE

Based on your agent’s experience and important considerations, like similar homes recently sold in the same neighborhood, the condition of the property and what you can afford, your agent will help you prepare and present an offer. If you’ve been pre-approved for a mortgage in advance, you’ll be that much more prepared for this step. Moreover, pre-approval will give sellers assurance that you’re serious and allow you to make an offer with confidence as it relates to your budget, expenses, savings and more.

JOIN

M A E T OUR

SUBMIT AN OFFER

Speak with your agent to find out ways to make your offer stand out in this competitive market. Presenting a strong offer is important because your offer may be one of many. Work with your agent on ways to make your offer resonate with the seller.

NEGOTIATE THE OFFER

Sellers often will submit a counteroffer, seeking a higher purchase price or adjusted closing date. You either can accept the terms or decide if you want to counter. Each time the deal changes through a counteroffer, you or the seller have the option to accept, reject or counter again. The contract is official when both parties sign. If your offer is approved, Freddie Mac always advises getting an independent home inspection, so you know the home’s true condition. If the inspector uncovers undisclosed problems or issues, your agent can discuss any potential repairs with the seller’s agent. Your agent should also help you with other important contingencies, such as insurance quotes or a survey so you don’t find yourself locked into an unsatisfying contract.

ACT FAST

The inventory of homes listed on the market today remains well below the sixth-month supply that constitutes a “normal” market. Buyer demand has continued to outpace the supply of homes for sale, causing buyers to be in competition. Presenting an offer as quickly as possible can make a substantial difference when you’re ready to move forward.

THREE RULES FOR THE IDEAL

OUT DOOR KIT CHEN BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Picture it — making everything from bacon and eggs to burgers and steaks al fresco. The pandemic has turned our attention homeward, and many of us are making our domestic dreams a reality – including building outdoor kitchens. Done well, such additions can increase your living space, add to your enjoyment of your home and increase your property’s value. If you’re considering a backyard cook spot, here are some guidelines to follow.

1) PLAN CAREFULLY

Although you’re outside, good design principles still apply. Be intentional with where you place the kitchen in relation to the house, and where you place grills, refrigerators and prep areas in relation to each other.

SOME QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

• W hat’s your style — traditional, contemporary, rustic, etc.? • How will the indoor and outdoor kitchens function together for entertaining? What is the maximum

36

September 2020

number of people you expect to host at one time? • W hat would be handy, like a dedicated gas line or side burner to sauté veggies? • W hat would be a worthy splurge, like a pizza oven? • W hat amenities, like a sink or fridge, would prevent you from having to run back and forth between your home and backyard? • How much storage will you need? • W hat is your budget, and what are your priorities? Factor in the cost of obtaining permits, tools and any professional help you may need with design, electrical or plumbing work. • W hich pieces, if any, do you want to be portable? Overall, be mindful of flow, and arrange the kitchen for maximum efficiency and function. Also make sure your addition complements your home’s design and landscape.

2) CONSIDER MAINTENANCE The hot, humid climate of south Mississippi is hard on any material

exposed to the elements. For exterior appliances, experts recommend stainless steel, which is easy to clean and corrosion resistant. You may like the look of teak, but bear in mind that it must be finished annually with a clear sealer. Concrete and natural stone, likewise, require periodic resealing. The less work you have to do to keep your outdoor kitchen working well and looking great, the more you’re likely to use and enjoy it. Even if you invest in ultra-durable equipment, make sure you protect it with a cover.

3) DON’T FORGET CREATURE COMFORTS

As you focus on your kitchen’s cooking-centric elements, don’t overlook its most important purpose — to be a gathering place. With that in mind, what will you need to entertain guests and make them comfortable? Make sure to provide shade and cover from rain, and heaters are a good idea for cooler weather. It’s also wise to integrate sound and lighting systems into your initial plan rather than adding them later.

SMART HOME TRENDS

Shaping the future

BY JENNIFER GENTILE

We may already be amazed at how high-tech our homes have become, but this is just the beginning. According to Forbes, the value of the smart home device market is primed to grow from $55 billion in 2016 to $174 billion by 2025.

HERE’S A FORECAST OF THE ADVANCES DESTINED TO TRANSFORM OUR DOMESTIC LIVES: ROBOTS

A robotic sweeper was once the stuff of science fiction, but today, Roomba represents about 20 percent of the worldwide vacuum market. Similarly, the robotic lawnmower market is poised to reach $2.69 billion by 2024 — freeing millions from the drudgery of weekend yardwork. Expect robot technology to become even more commonplace in the home and artificial intelligence to take over even more tasks. As smart as our robotic assistants already are, they’ll only get more intuitive and helpful as the technology evolves. How much time could you save if they could assist with cooking? What if they could learn your preferences and do chores without being asked? It’s coming.

40

September 2020

SECURITY

Keeping your home safe is getting more personal. We’re used to biometric security measures on our smartphones, so it’s no stretch to imagine facial recognition scans and fingerprint-enabled locks for our homes. Video doorbells, smart lights and remote monitoring capabilities already are common, but there’s lots of room for home security systems to get even more sophisticated.

HEALTH

During the pandemic, many of us have visited our doctors virtually. Long before COVID-19, wearable technology was available to track our pulse, sleep patterns and other health measures. Take these advances even further and envision home technology that can identify early warning signs of illness, alert authorities if someone falls or even make diagnoses. The smart wellness industry is expanding exponentially – benefitting patients and relieving pressure on the health care industry.

COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

They’re not quite mainstream, but refrigerators already exist that can read recipes for you as you cook or

track which groceries you need. You also can buy a bed that will self-adjust for optimal sleep conditions. For many of us, these luxuries are out of our budget — but they’re a good indication of where things are headed. Bathrooms will become more spalike; you’ll be able to fill your bathtub without touching a tap and program your aromatherapy preferences. Living rooms will change, too; highresolution projectors that shrink or expand with a button or voice command will provide an alternative to traditional TV sets.

INTEGRATION

In general, the key to smart homes getting smarter is greater integration. Can you even recall the days before you could tell Alexa to turn on the lights or play your favorite song? The more systems and devices in our home that we can connect to the internet and to each other — water heaters, speakers, thermostats, kitchen appliances and even window shades — the easier and more convenient our lives become. Increasingly faster networks mean greater speed and efficiency, which creates endless possibilities.

PREPARING TO GET A

MORTGAGE

So, you’re tired of renting and think it’s finally time to own a home? Before making the leap to home ownership, there’s one question you must ask and answer: What monthly payment works best for my budget? From there your mortgage banker and real estate agent can advise you best. Here are some basic tips to consider when it comes to your mortgage options, down payments and budgeting for monthly expenses to help you decide if you’re financially ready to buy a home. CHOOSING THE RIGHT MORTGAGE

The mortgage option you choose will affect all of your remaining decisions about down payments and monthly budgeting. Various mortgage programs are available for all home buyers, including FHA loans, conventional loans, VA loans, Rural Development loans, fixedrate or adjustable-rate loans and the more specialized jumbo loans. Your mortgage options should be thoroughly investigated and understood prior to beginning your search for a particular home.

DETERMINING THE DOWN PAYMENT

Your down payment is one of the most important numbers to consider when purchasing a home. You should take into account your available savings, your comfort level in making the investment and the closing expenses associated with your mortgage when making this decision.

46

September 2020

BY CHANTELLE CHOTTO

YOUR MONTHLY INCOME AND EXPENSES

As you research your available mortgage options and determine your down payment, you will need to consider your monthly income and the expense of becoming a homeowner. Items to examine include your weekly or monthly income, your utility expenses and other monthly obligations like car payments, student loans, groceries and transportation. If you maintain a checking account, you can prepare yourself to answer these questions by thoroughly examining your last six months of statements.

COVERING THE UNEXPECTED

If you’re a first-time home buyer, you may not realize that all those repairs, which you used to call your landlord about, are now your responsibility. Storm damage, plumbing issues or an air conditioner that won’t cool can be very expensive. Rest assured, you have options to protect you; homeowner’s insurance, home warranties and home inspections are the most common. Many of these protections will offer plans with monthly premiums that can be included in either your mortgage payment or as an allocated monthly expense. Partnering with the right real estate agent and mortgage banker will provide you with the necessary information and resources.

STEPS TO GREAT STAGING

BY DARIENNE CROSBY

The key to staging a home is creating an environment that appeals to the masses. Here are some tips for presenting your home in the best light: • Declutter and clean all surfaces and closets. While you declutter, be sure to put away any personal items and photos. This helps to create a blank canvas that a buyer can envision themselves living in. • Keep the walls as bare as possible. Some buyers can get worried about having to fill holes in the walls when they see numerous mirrors, art pieces and photos hung in the home. • Neutralize your home’s color palette. You can start by swapping to white towels, bedding, pillows, and curtains. • Finally, add small decorative plants throughout and display a fruit basket in your kitchen. The bright hues of the plants and fruits will add pops of color and bring a sense of life to your home. Crosby is a Realtor with HL Raymond Properties. SAVE MONEY, REDUCE STRESS WHILE BUILDING YOUR

DREAM HOME

Building your dream home can be a very exciting option if the existing home inventory and the cookie-cutter tract homes you’ve seen are not what you and your family are looking for. But like many people, even if you’ve been a homeowner before, you probably have never had to hire a builder, an engineer or an architect or decide where every outlet and switch should be placed. The build process can be intimidating and scary — and this is before you’ve even decided how to pay for it all (assuming you didn’t win the lottery). Luckily for you, today’s one-time close construction loans save you both money and time with a single closing and low fixed rate. This loan product, which also may be called an “all-in-one,” “single closing” or “onetime close” construction loan, has revolutionized the construction loan process and is the loan of choice for most construction loan borrowers. This type of loan allows a borrower to work with one lender and have one loan closing because the borrower closes on a single loan that funds

the home construction and then converts to a permanent loan after the construction is completed. The conversion usually is triggered by the issuance of a certificate of occupancy (or its equivalent) and your lender’s final inspection and approval. The terms and details of the permanent loan will be agreed upon in advance, and the final principal amount for the permanent loan will be based on the amount disbursed during the construction phase. Building a home can be an exciting process the entire family can enjoy, but for most people, it’s not something they have done before — and that leads to stress and anxiety. Partnering with the right lender and real estate agent will remove a lot of the stress involved in the process and allow you to watch the custom home of your dreams become a reality. A TRUE CUSTOM HOME BUILDER Charlie Gant & Craig Brown have been partners for more than 20 years, with over 40 years of combined homebuilding experience. As a result, Gant & Brown Premier Home Builders know how to deliver a quality product and unparalleled customer service. Having built both large and small scale homes, as well as high-end to moderately priced homes from Diamondhead to Ocean Springs, Gant and Brown has made their mark on the Mississippi Coast. Working with their clients to design each home to meet their needs gives Gant & Brown the distinction of saying no two homes are alike.

While many of our clients have experience in the building process, others are brand new to the process.

READY TO START YOUR NEW HOME?

Farmhouse and cottage style homes are popular with our clients as well as outdoor living and cooking areas. Lighter colors for interior finishes, such as whites and greys, with some darker accents on a wall or island are also trendy.” We are not a large volume builder. More is not necessarily better” says Brown. Gant would agree and says “ We believe our success is due to our quality of construction, attention to detail, client satisfaction and service after the sale”. Gant & Brown works with every client to grant any and every legitimate request to ensure 100% client satisfaction

NEW CONSTRUCT ION WHAT TO EXPECT

When you’re house hunting, new construction has undeniable appeal. Imagine a home with your design selections and floor plan, full of new finishes, appliances and amenities. Think about having more money in your pocket with energy-saving features and, based on the home being built to today’s stringent building codes, lower insurance rates. New construction homes also come with a comprehensive warranty for added peace of mind, making it even more appealing. If you have your heart set on a new home, here’s what you should know:

Visit the community: Go at various times and talk to the residents. Learn about the quality of the homes and builder warranty follow-through.

BUILDERS: PRODUCTION VERSUS CUSTOM

Consider resale value: While you may plan to stay in your newly built home “forever,” the reality is eventually, you may want or need to sell. According to research from the National Home Builders Association, the most coveted options and spaces are as follows: • 93 percent of home buyers want a laundry room. • 90 percent want a linen closet in the bathroom. • 86 percent want garage storage. • 85 percent want a walk-in kitchen pantry.

Home builders come in two categories, production and custom. A production builder builds multiple homes at once using pre-drawn plans while custom builders usually build a one-of-a-kind home based on the requests and needs of the buyer. You also hear the term “semi-custom.” The difference is the amount of modification you can do. Many buyers assume a production builder’s home is less expensive due to the volume of houses built. However, you can build in a wide range of price points. Determining who offers the best value can be difficult because all square footage is not created equal. Pricing depends on materials, subcontractors, location, community amenities and more. Ask what is included in the home to determine which items on your wish list are considered upgrades.

DO YOUR DUE DILLIGENCE

With brand-new everything, how can you go wrong, right? It’s easier than you think. Doing your homework can help prevent complications on your new home journey: Research builders: Be sure your builder is constructing homes of equal or greater value in the neighborhood to keep property values high.

BY SUSIE SIEMIONTKOWSKI

September 2020

Check school ratings: Whether you have children in school or not, school rankings play a huge role in perceived resale value. Anticipate delays: With new construction, any number of factors can cause delays, including weather, labor shortages and issues with materials. Be flexible with your timeline.

A FINAL TIP: BEFORE HOME SHOPPING, CONTACT A LENDER

A lender will review your debt-to-income ratio, a formula that compares your gross monthly income to your entire house payment (principal, interest, taxes, insurance, and any HOA fee). It also factors in the minimum monthly amount on all other debt, such as car payments, student loans and credit cards. The lender uses this and the current interest rate to calculate the total amount you can borrow to meet your desired monthly payment. Your home is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. A little research beforehand can help ensure you invest in the best property for you and your family. Siemiontkowski is a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Alfonso Realty. THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE LISTING YOUR HOME

Are you ready to put your home on the market? Before you do, make sure you’re prepared and that your property looks its best. Here’s some advice for getting the best possible outcome from your sale:

1. FIND A GREAT REAL ESTATE AGENT

You should feel comfortable working with your agent and trust him or her to sell your home for top dollar. Get referrals, conduct interviews and decide. Good agents can help you price your home accurately for a quick sell, assist you with contract negotiations and much more. Choose someone you know will work hard to sell your property.

2. EVALUATE YOUR CURB APPEAL

belongings to those in need. Cleaning and decluttering will make your home more inviting and appealing to potential buyers. A fresh smell and clear space will help them see the full picture. Getting rid of things or packing them up and storing them elsewhere also will make your move easier once your house sells.

4. DEPERSONALIZE YOUR SPACE

Help the new homebuyers visualize themselves in the space by removing family photos, personalized or bold artwork and furniture. The goal is to create a blank canvas on which buyers can project their own vision of living there and loving it.

First impressions are key, and you want to make your home look as inviting as possible. Accomplishing this can be very inexpensive. Try adding plants, a fresh coat of paint and maybe some chairs and garden tables on the porch.

5. REPAINT WALLS TO NEUTRAL TONES

3. CLEAN AND DECLUTTER LIVING AREAS

Lee is a Realtor with HL Raymond Properties LLC. Reach her at (228) 466-6643.

Tidying up and removing excess items helps show potential buyers that there will be ample space for their belongings in your home. This is a good time to donate extra and unwanted

Neutral colors are safer than bold colors and accents. It makes it easier for the buyers to make the home their own with little effort.

HOW TO CHOOSE A

REALT OR

If you are considering buying a new home or selling your current one, you would be best served by working with a professional.

A Realtor is a licensed real estate salesperson who belongs to the National Association of Realtors — the largest trade group in the country. They are bound by a code of ethics to act on their clients’ behalf. Not all Realtors are motivated by money, but it’s important to understand that they don’t get paid until they get the job done. So, how do you pick a Realtor who will act with your best interest at heart? I don’t know if there is a simple answer, and I won’t fill your head with a bunch of fluff. Most people find a Realtor by word of mouth or by driving around and noticing names repeated on signs. Name recognition is a great way to find a Realtor, but you also want to make sure that person suits your personality and needs. If you are a buyer, hiring a Realtor doesn’t cost you anything. With that being said, why wouldn’t you use one? Here are the steps for choosing the right Realtor for you:

STEP 1: ASK AROUND

If you have friends who bought recently, request their opinion and recommendation. What did they think of their Realtor? Did they feel like they were taken care of? What did they like

56

September 2020

most about the person they worked with? What did they like least? Would they use that Realtor again?

STEP 2: INTERVIEW A FEW

Once you’ve got a few recommendations, arrange a time to meet. According to Zillow research, people only ever contact one agent. By talking with multiple agents, you can compare and contrast to find someone who will be not just a good fit — but the right fit for you and your family. In the interview, ask each agent the following: • How long have you been working in real estate? • Do you work with buyers or sellers? • How many clients are you currently working with? • How did you get them? • What type of Real Estate do you specialize in? • Can you provide any testimonials or past clients I could talk to? • How will you determine which homes may match our needs? • What is the best way for us to communicate with you?

STEP 3: RESEARCH

Check reviews on Realtor.com, Zillow, Facebook and elsewhere online. What is the Realtor’s reputation? Is she approachable, friendly and sincere? Is she trustworthy? Is she involved in her community?

STEP 4: TEST THEIR KNOWLEDGE

Ask the prospective Realtor to provide some market information, like what’s available in your desired area, the average cost per home, etc. See how well she listened to your needs, wants and must-haves.

STEP 5: CHOOSE

Once you feel comfortable with the answers you received and the feeling you get, make your selection. Most of the time, you will know right away if that person is the right one to walk with you through the homebuying process. You should have a good feel by now for whether an agent will herd you through like cattle or take the time to get to know you. While buying a home is one of the biggest decisions some of you will make in your life, choosing the right Realtor is almost as important. Without the best guide and advocate, how will you know you got the house that was meant for you?

T IDYING UP

YOUR SENTIMENTAL TREASURES

What’s the most difficult household category for us to sort through and organize? Almost unanimously, it’s sentimental items. It usually takes plenty of practice honing our decision-making skills in decluttering before we can confidently address this category. I don’t suggest it as your first tidying project, but when you are ready, organizing your sentimental items will bring you peace, joy and gratitude as you take the time to honor your unique journey through life.

GATHER BY SUBCATEGORY

To avoid becoming overwhelmed and burned out, pace yourself as you work systematically through cards/letters, then journals/scrapbooks, awards/achievements/trophies, miscellaneous memorabilia and finally, the biggie: photos. When possible, remove photos from albums and frames. Often, there are far fewer individual pictures you really want to keep, and the album itself isn’t in great shape while frames frequently land in the donations box.

CAREFULLY CURATE YOUR COLLECTION

This is your journey. Listen to your heart as you hold each

item for consideration and keep only what you feel great about. Resist the temptation to hang on to something just because you think it might be meaningful to someone else in the future. Remember, it is because something was cherished by you that it might be meaningful to them. That said, you can mindfully set aside specific items to offer others, but make sure to express that they are under no obligation to accept or keep your offering. Acknowledge any emotions that may surface, and aspire to release discarded items with gratitude and peace.

STORE RESPECTFULLY

Once you have selected the sentimental items you truly treasure, make accessibility and prominence your goal. Feature your cherished items in frames, display them on bookshelves and store them in archival-quality boxes or beautiful acid-free albums. Rotate them frequently. These items tell your story. Make it easy for you and others to enjoy them.

In 2020, we’ve spent more time than ever at home. As we’ve social distanced and sheltered in place, we haven’t been able to escape kitchens needing a gut job, outdated bathrooms and anything-but-restful bedrooms. Maybe we were well aware of our homes’ limitations before, or we discovered them during the pandemic; either way, we’re doing something about them. People are tackling home improvement projects in record numbers, and many have enlisted professional help with their renovations. Before you hire a contractor to spruce up your spaces, consider this advice:

HAVE A PLAN

What exactly do you want done? What are your timeframe and budget? Get the basics down so you can compare bids more easily and narrow down which contractors can execute your vision.

Make a list of your top prospects and talk to them over the phone and/or in person. You’re hiring someone to do a job, so approach the process accordingly. Some questions you should ask include: • Can they complete projects of your size and type? • Can they connect you with some of their previous clients? • How many projects do they take on at once? • How do they maintain cleanliness and safety on a jobsite? • When could they start? Also make sure to get a copy of the contractor’s license, as well as those of any subcontractors they will be using. When consulting other clients, ask whether the contractor finished the job on time, within budget and to their satisfaction.

PUT IT IN WRITING

Spell out in a detailed contract exactly what work will be done, as well as deadlines, a payment schedule, materials to be used, etc. Stay involved and in close communication with your contractor throughout the process to ensure you’re happy with the outcome.

CREATE AN INSPIRING

HOME WORKSPACE

BY ADRIENNE ELLIOTT

There’s no denying that our concept of workspace has undergone some major changes lately. Do Zoom meetings with business attire on the top and joggers on the bottom sound normal to anyone else? If you find yourself in your new “at-home office” feeling a little less motivated or inspired, I have some amazing news. Simply editing and accessorizing your new workspace may be the refresh your soul needs to embrace this new lifestyle. Here are four simple ways to add new life to your home office. These pieces also can transition easily into regular home decor once we slowly return to our true offices.

1) START AT THE BASE LEVEL — YES, THE FLOOR

By changing out or layering area rugs in your space, you instantly add color, dimension and texture. Trends I am loving: printed, vintage-inspired and, of course, woven fringe

2) ADD LIGHT!

Light fixtures are a wonderful way to change up a space while adding softness; they are truly one of my favorite things. Table lamps are easily switched out, too. Trends I am loving: brass and acrylic, color and coastal vibes

3) ADD SOME NEW ARTWORK

Target is a great place to score some inexpensive finds.

4) FINISH IT OFF WITH SOME AMAZING ACCESSORIES

Not sure where to start? How about a great tray, a decorative box, amazing coffee table books and an interesting object to place on top of or inside of your decorative box? I would encourage you to think of your workspace as more than simply a “workspace.” Don’t feel you must have your traditional office supplies on display. You can hide them in decorative boxes or desk drawers. This will make your space truly feel like a curated interior.

Welcome to Florence Gardens: ‘The Nicest Place in Mississippi’

NEIGHBORS

HELPING NEIGHBORS BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Resident Hope Goldin loved Florence Gardens before COVID-19 — but the pandemic pushed her to share her feelings with Reader’s Digest. Amid a national climate of fear and unrest, the magazine was looking for places where people were finding strength in each other. Goldin, a stayat-home grandmother, nominated her community — which Reader’s Digest has named “The Nicest Place in Mississippi.” “I am so proud of how our

72

September 2020

neighborhood has come together during this time,” says Goldin, who has lived in Florence Gardens for two-and-ahalf years. “Even social distancing, we have had a lot of fun events that gave us activities to do and really raised our morale.” During lockdown, neighbors have participated in karaoke, trivia night, outdoor movie nights, a Memorial Day parade, performances by professional singers, pop-up restaurants and more. For Fourth of July, they enjoyed barbecue and a band, as well as fireworks and a kids’

"I am so proud of how our neighborhood has come together during this time."

parade. When racial tensions flared, neighbors showed even greater solidarity. “The entire community came together after the death of George Floyd — Christian, Jewish, black and white,” Goldin told Reader’s Digest. “The police chief, the mayor and the fire chief were present with their families at the prayer protests.” Goldin’s three children have homes in Florence Gardens, and under normal circumstances, she and her husband, Alan, get to see their grandchildren a lot

and enjoy the community atmosphere. Because the 450-acre, master-planned development offers everything from starter homes to stately properties, says Director of Marketing Rachel Rath, there is “no typical resident.” “People at all seasons of life make their lives at Florence Gardens,” she says. “We have everyone from singles to young families with children to retirees.” The community has four neighborhoods, she adds — each with its own distinct personality — and numerous world-class amenities like the Pool at Midland Cove,

The Park at Whisper Garden, Magnolia Hall, Butterfly Boardwalk and Hope Academy. When Florence Gardens was established in 2005, she adds, the goal was to create a “true community”— a place residents loved it so much that they couldn’t imagine calling any other neighborhood home. “When we learned that one of our residents had nominated Florence Gardens for the Reader’s Digest award, we were thrilled,” Rath says. “To us, it was the ultimate reward for years and years of commitment to a shared vision.” As the “Nicest Place in Mississippi,” Florence Gardens is also a finalist for the national title. Without expert guidance, a homeowner choosing flooring and home finishes can get bogged down quickly. Paula Gamboa, vice president of Floor Co. Flooring & Design Center, strives to make the process fun and painless throughout. “Our mission is to give customers an experience — the Floor Co. experience …,” she says. “Our objective is to give each client a stress-free experience from start to finish.” In owning her own flooring store, Gamboa is following in her father’s footsteps. When he fell ill and couldn’t maintain his business, Gamboa took over and established a new company with a modern business model. “As an employee of my father’s as I was attending college, I had learned the family business on all and many levels,” she says. Over the past decade as an entrepreneur, armed with knowledge and skills passed down through generations, Gamboa says Floor Co. has seen significant growth and weathered many ups and downs. While the coronavirus crisis has wreaked havoc on most businesses, she adds, hers has been fortunate to stay in demand as people catch up on home renovations and construction continues. The Gulfport store caters

to residential homeowners, residential home builders, interior designers, architects, commercial contractors, government entities and others. Customers can pick from an array of floor coverings, window treatments, lighting, wallpaper and more to fit any design need. The business stands out from its competitors by offering one-on-one customer service, along with products and services that are unique in the market, Gamboa says. Beyond its extensive selection of hardwood, laminate, tile, mosaic, carpet and luxury vinyl plank flooring, the store is a partner for residential and commercial projects large and small — providing repair and refinishing expertise, professional installation and more. The company carries a number of exclusive lines, according to Gamboa, and can accommodate a range of price points — from budget conscious to high end. She is grateful, she adds, for 10 years of community support and the loyal customers who trust the business to execute their vision. “It is so exciting to see the fruits of your labor when the design process comes to life,” Gamboa says. “It is the customer relationships that turn into friendships that make me love what we do.”

REFRESH YOUR TIRED BRICK FOR INSTANT

CURB APPEAL

A simple yet significant renovation homeowners and flippers can make is painting dated exterior brick. Paint for bricks has come a long way, and it’s now available for DIYers at big box stores and local hardware stores near you. Here’s the steps to ensure a successful project: • The first step to any exterior project is watching the weather. You’ll want to have roughly five days of fairly clear weather with temperatures below 90 degrees. • Next, pick your paint color and grab your paint. • Before dipping your brush in the can, prep the house by pressure washing it yourself or hiring a professional. Contact your local real estate agent for suggestions of companies that perform this service. • Let the house dry for 24 to 48 hours. After it’s dry, tape off doors, windows and trim. • Now you’re ready to start spraying or hand rolling your brick walls. Even if you spray, you’ll probably need to return with your brush and use a heavy amount of paint to fill in all the little crevices the sprayer didn’t reach. I’d also recommend two coats of paint to get the even look and color you’re

aiming for. It’s just that easy! With a little hard work prepping your home, your place will be the BY KATIE AIME envy of the block in just one week. If you’re done and still have the energy, time and budget, most Realtors would highly recommend a few more tips for curb appeal: • While you have the paintbrush handy, coat your shutters and door with some fresh color, add a few new plants, change out old plants and make your mailbox as fresh as the rest of your house. If you’re considering selling, buyers will be so impressed with the outside that they won’t want to miss out on what awaits them inside. Best of luck on any home project you undertake! Feel free to e-mail your before and after photos to gulffrenzysales@gmail.com; I’d love to follow your progress. Aime is a realtor and associate broker with HL Raymond Properties LLC. Contact her at (228) 466-6643 or gulffrenzysales@gmail.com.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Why curb appeal is crucial We only have one chance to make a first impression. That’s exactly BY HOLLY how I feel when LEMOINE-RAYMOND someone sees the exterior and grounds of a home for the first time. When deciding on a home purchase, buyers typically look at photos or drive by the home before inquiring or moving forward. Small tweaks can have a huge impact. For instance, painting the front door and adding shutters with a pop of color can make a dramatic difference and highlight the home’s exterior features. I advise clients putting their home on the market to make some small improvements, including: • Pressure washing the outside and driveway • Updating any lighting • Making sure your address numbers are clear and visible • Adding a doormat • Refreshing any landscaping and adding seasonal potted plants. Another great touch is to make the front porch inviting with a swing, rug or outdoor seating. The more inviting your home looks, the greater your curb appeal. Curb appeal is your home's first impression, so make it a good one! Lemoine-Raymond is owner, broker, executive producer and director with HL Raymond Properties LLC and HL Raymond Productions. dorm edition

We moved our oldest child into a dorm in August of last year. There were many emotions that day, but I felt prepared. During Christmas break, I began researching and reading about the best products, tips and tricks for making a college move as easy as possible. College choice and roommate compatibility are understandably more important than what brand mattress topper is on the bed, but dorm room comfort is important. After all, your young adult will be spending lots of time there, so he/she needs a home away from home. In the end, we were pleased with how easy the process was and, most importantly, our son was happy with his room.

HERE’S HOW TO ACE THE COLLEGE DORM TRANSITION • Don’t jump the gun (so to speak). Many websites have dorm room checklists, BY KATIE PRESLEY including Bed, Bath & Beyond, but the one Gulf Coast Moms that counts comes from the actual college Blog contributor your young adult is attending. Many times, certain items are prohibited; our son’s college gave us a list. Visit the college website or call the housing department if you have questions or concerns. • Facebook and Facebook Marketplace can be your friend. Many college students GCW AFFILIATE only stay in a dorm for one year because they pledge and live in a sorority or fraternity house the next year. I have seen expensive, custom-made bedding, headboards and furniture at a fraction of the cost on Facebook and Marketplace. • Hold off on large items. A recliner in a dorm room may sound comfortable, but wait until move-in day is over. Most dorm rooms are exceedingly small. If there is space, always shop resale. We found a leather recliner for our son at a fraction of the price in a home resale store. Remember that college students can be rough with furniture, so spend wisely! • Not all computers are created equal. Some majors require a PC, and some require an Apple. Check with the college or university.

80

September 2020

• Buy a quality mattress topper. Most college dorms have thin mattresses, and a topper can make all the difference. We bought one on homedepot.com, but Amazon and Kohl’s carry them, too. • IKEA bags are a must. We bought eight — and we used eight. The bags are sometimes called “blue bags,” but the name is actually the FRAKTA bag. They are cheap but hold up well. We packed anything and everything in them. I know my son has brought home laundry for me when I see one of those bags. They are indispensable. • Determine what’s already in the dorm room. Some come with a refrigerator and microwave. Some don’t. All are different. • Most dorm beds are twin size. Some people prefer to buy full-size bedding, but sheets must be twin if that’s the bed size. A full-size comforter will be a bit too big. We just bought twin for everything. • Communicate with roommates. Our son had never met his roommate. They talked about the room over the phone, and I talked to the roommate’s mom several times. We decided they would purchase all the bathroom necessities (their dorm room had a bathroom), and we would buy the television. • Label everything. I put wide tape with our son’s name and room number just in case something got away from us or someone was wanting to help us up to the room. I probably could provide about 20 more tips, but part of the fun is learning and going through the process with your young adult. One more tip: Staying positive is key. Your college student may be feeling overwhelmed but not want to show it. I smiled the whole time and waited until I got home to cry. It was hard, but I wanted to make some positive, fun memories for him that day. Need more advice? Grown and Flown (grownandflown. com) is a website, and Facebook page, offering a plethora of information about sending young adults to college. Presley is mom to a freshman college baseball player, a daughter who is a sophomore in high school and a 2-year-old son. In addition to her personal blog, she is now a Gulf Coast Moms Blog contributor. For motherhood advice and insight from Presley and other local writers, visit gulfcoast.citymomsblog.com.

ADOPT A GRANDPARENT DAY ADAPTS DURING PANDEMIC Although COVID-19 has prevented in-person visits, participants in this year’s Adopt a Grandparent Day — which falls on Sept. 12 this year — still will honor and support local nursing home residents. Coordinators are asking people to send cards and letters to 15431 O’Neal Road, Suite B, Gulfport, Mississippi, 39503. Each item will be laminated, sanitized and distributed to local facilities; volunteers are needed to help with this process. There are also plans to fill a treasure box for each facility with games and other items. Recommended items include toothbrushes, hairbrushes, combs, handkerchiefs, small stuffed animals, notepads, small notebooks, writing pens, Post-it notes, emery boards, playing cards, fingernail clippers and word and puzzle books. tips to encourage reading in the digital age

BY DR. RAYMOND J. HUNTINGTON

Parents, as you know, today’s generation of students has grown up with technology. It isn’t an addon, or something they think about separately, but rather, it’s integrated into everything they do in and outside of school. Technology certainly offers many advantages to students of all ages, but does it lead to less reading? While some children choose scrolling social media and browsing the internet on their smartphones over other activities (including reading), there are many ways to promote reading while acknowledging that technology plays a big part in your child’s life. Here are several tips on how to encourage your “digital native” child to read more:

1. MAKE READING MATERIAL ACCESSIBLE

A bookshelf in your home and/or your child’s room is a great way to help him or her start creating a home library, but if your child has a laptop or tablet, he or she can download an app from Amazon or Barnes & Noble for digital reading. That way, wherever you are, your child always has access to his or her book. If your child prefers a separate tablet for reading only, e-readers and gift cards for future e-books make great gifts. Bottom line: make it easy for your child to get books.

2. HELP YOUR CHILD FIND BOOKS OF INTEREST

Today’s students seek stimulation.

82

September 2020

Their minds work quickly. If a book doesn’t capture their attention, they’ll abandon it for something that does. This is all the more reason to help your child find reading material that gets him or her excited. Reading-focused social websites like Goodreads are an awesome resource, and don’t forget about librarians, who can guide your child toward material based on his or her interests, age, reading ability and more.

3. TALK ABOUT THE DOWNSIDES OF MULTITASKING

There’s plenty of research out there that articulates why doing five things at once is less effective than concentrating on one. The American Psychological Association explains that “doing more than one task at a time, especially more than one complex task, takes a toll on productivity.” Help your child establish good habits by setting a time in your household for daily reading (and reading only) and having your child mute all phone and other notifications while reading.

4. MAKE READING FUN

This is an age-old tip for a reason. Put simply, if reading is enjoyable, your child will want to do more of it. Make reading a part of your child’s routine so that it becomes a habit as he or she grows older, but also use reading to create memories as a family. A few nights a week, make hot chocolate or popcorn and have family reading night in the living room or on the patio in the summer. On your free

Sunday evenings, head to your favorite local bookstore or coffee shop for some reading, then go out to eat or come home to make dinner together. Lastly, remember how important it is to get your child help if needed. Your child will never choose to read more or think of reading as relaxing downtime if it is a constant struggle. So, if you notice that your child receives low test scores, grapples with text that seems simple or resists every effort you make to encourage reading, arrange a professional assessment of your child’s reading abilities to see what might be going on behind the scenes that’s preventing him or her from becoming a reader. Discover what your home is missing at

OCEAN SPRINGS MERCANTILE BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Newly expanded in the heart of town, Ocean Springs Mercantile has even more room to house its treasures — meaning patrons have an even greater chance of finding that elusive, one-of-a-kind item they’ve been hunting for. “We are excited about the foot traffic it will bring, as well as the increased square footage we have to house even more amazing pieces,” says proprietor Susan Hagan, who launched the store in 2016. Before the move, Hagan’s husband, Randy, and his crew at Village Building & Remodeling spent weeks transforming the space, which is about 1,250 square feet larger than the store’s previous location. The process included opening up the ceiling and repurposing old doors, frames and antique windows. The revamped store opened at 700 Washington Ave. on June 18 — and the public has responded enthusiastically, according to Hagan. “We have gotten fantastic feedback,” she says. “Our customers have loved it, especially the additional space. “One of my friends said ‘wow’ upon entering, and I think that about sums it up.” The new address “is the perfect location for people to stroll in and browse,” the proprietor adds. Shoppers could spend hours exploring an assortment of home and outdoor décor, T-shirts, local honey, kitchen goods, vintage items and antiques, furniture, art, soy candles, room sprays, accessories and much more. Visitors may recognize Kalija, a near 6-foot wooden Indian sculpture that was lost, then recovered, after being swept away by Hurricane Katrina. During the holidays, the store’s Cloisonné ornaments are in high demand, featuring two original Ocean Springs designs that Hagan created herself. T-shirts are always popular, she says, as well as locally made oyster shell art.

“I hope that my shop is where people come to find something that is one of a kind for their home, or even as a gift,” Hagan says. “I value having a medley of old and new merchandise for people of all ages and budgets.” Before launching her business, Hagan managed a high-end boutique for over 10 years. After Katrina, her husband came to the area to help rebuild, establishing a construction firm, and he and Hagan ended up making the Coast their home “When I left Texas and moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, my creativity needed an outlet,” Hagan says. “I wanted to bring something unique to Ocean Springs.” Before the days of department and convenience stores, the “mercantile,” or general store, was a one-stop shop for an array of household goods. Hagan chose a name for her business that invokes that same friendly, nostalgic feeling — along with the promise of finding exactly what you’re looking for. “I want people to come visit Ocean Springs Mercantile for their home needs first,” she says, adding, “We believe there are no other stores like ours.”

Products both clients and pros are loving this year It’s one thing when I love a product as a makeup artist — but it’s another when multiple clients agree. Let’s look at some of the beauty buys getting all-around rave reviews in 2020: L’OREAL PARIS HYDRA GENIUS DAILY LIQUID CARE FOR NORMAL/DRY SKIN ($17.99, Ulta.com) Remember, the first step in any good makeup routine is skincare. Before applying makeup, I always prep the skin with a good moisturizer. Whenever my clients get a whiff of this product, they always comment on how good it smells and how nice and hydrating it feels. A lightweight gel formula, this will not leave your skin feeling greasy and weighed down. Infused with aloe water and hyaluronic acid, this moisturizer will draw moisture to your skin for up to 72 hours. There’s even a formula for oily skin as well. COLOURPOP BARE NECESSITIES SHADOW PALETTE ($34, colourpop.com) Packed with an array of 30 flattering neutral eyeshadows, this is the perfect

88

September 2020

affordable palette for any eye color or skin tone imaginable. The shades range from soft taupes and sandy browns to plummy mauves and sparkling chocolate. There is a perfect balance of lights and darks, mattes and shimmers. Clients always ask me about this palette, as there are truly endless options — whether you need something easy for work or want to go glam for the evening. MAC PRO LONGWEAR CONCEALER ($25, maccosmetics. com) 24-hour wear? Check. Water resistant? Check. Fragrance free and non-acnegenic? Check, check. This is one of the best concealers I’ve ever used, and I’ve used a lot. Several concealers have graced my kit, but this one keeps finding its way back. It packs full coverage in a concentrated, lightweight formula.

If you have blemishes, under-eye darkness or rosacea, this concealer will be your new go-to. One of my favorite ways to use this is mixed in with a drop of moisturizer and blended all over the skin as a foundation. It gives you the most beautiful natural glow while still providing coverage where needed. L’OREAL LASH PARADISE MASCARA ($10.99) Any time I pull this mascara from my kit, a client exclaims that it’s her favorite, too. It’s always a good feeling to know your most loved products are pro-approved. This mascara gives mega volume and length, and it’s packed with ultra-black pigments for that dramatic, false-lash effect. I have spent triple the money on high-end mascaras that weren’t half as good as this one. It’s also available in a waterproof formula.

POWER TO THE

PUFF This blast from the past is here to stay BY JASMINE BALL

92

September 2020

The ’80s are back in full effect. I’m so excited! I’ve always wanted to be a part of this fun, vibrant era, and now I can be! The puff sleeve has gradually been gaining a foothold in 2020, and as you’ve probably noticed, it’s everywhere. At this point, it’s no longer a trend; it’s a classic. The puff sleeve is known for giving extreme volume on top while creating a slimmer, fitted shape in the waist. Although the puff can be bold and intimidating, it’s the perfect risk to take. Within the puff-sleeve family, you have so many styles to choose from. Some may go for the vintage, Victorian feel, giving a nod to the late 1800s. There’s also the elongated puff, which is perfect for flowing tops or dresses. The off-the-shoulder puff sleeve makes a romantic, yet modern, statement. The puff sleeve also has the advantage of being multi-seasonal; it’s the wardrobe element you need to transition from summer to autumn. Making it your own is the best part. I love this mint green, cropped puffsleeve top. It gives me volume while maintaining a light-and-airy, feminine feel. With simple accessories and long bell bottom/ flare jeans, this look is stylish and comfortable while staying on-trend. Jasmine Ball is a Mississippi fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. health

THE BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY

microbiome

The human body is host to around 100 trillion microbes (bacteria, fungi, viruses and other single-cell organisms). The biggest population of these microbes reside in our gut, weighing in at around 4 pounds. This microbiome has profound effects on our health, so much so that it has been referred to as our ‘hidden organ.” It influences the risk of numerous diseases to include cancer, autoimmune disease, heart disease and many others. As it turns out, there are good and not-so-good microbiota. The good news is that we have a lot of control over whether we have a good or not-so-good microbiome. Adequate sleep, vitamin D or sunlight exposure (15 minutes unprotected per day will suffice, but never burn!) and regular exercise all help to promote a healthy microbiome. Antibiotic use has a negative effect, so we should use antibiotics judiciously and only when clinically necessary. Diet has been found to have a profound effect, so let’s talk about that a bit more. Did you know that Africans have one of the lowest rates of colon cancer in the world, but African Americans have one of the highest? Why is that if they are very similar genetically? Strong evidence suggests it is due to the difference in their diets. Africans have a diet high in plant-based foods and low in processed foods. African Americans often have a westernized diet that is high in red meat and processed foods and low in fruits and vegetables. Plant-based foods contain a substance we cannot digest, which is fiber. We have known for a long time

that fiber is important to colon health, but we did not know exactly why. As it turns out, fiber is food for the bacteria in our colon. When the bacteria feed on fiber, they produce a substance called butyrate. Butyrate keeps our colon healthy and protects it from cancer. Our bodies can’t produce butyrate, but our bacteria can. If we eat enough fiber, we maintain a healthy population of good bacteria, which in turn produce butyrate, keeping our colon healthy and preventing colon cancer and other diseases. The less fiber you eat, the more bad bacteria you will have in your gut — bad bacteria that produce toxic substances and increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. Diets high in red muheat and animal fats support a toxic microbiome and should be limited. When consumed, it is best to do with fruits and vegetables, as this has been shown to offset the many of the negative effects on the microbiome. Remember, you are not just eating for you. You are eating for the trillions of microbes that inhabit you. Feed them well to keep you well!

BACK FROM THE BRINK ENCOMPASS HEALTH REHABILITATION HOSPITAL HELPS MIKE MORGAN RECOVER AFTER COVID-19 BATTLE Despite being a relatively healthy 73-year-old, Mike Morgan narrowly survived COVID-19. The retired Pass Christian resident, who worked as an engineering manager in the gas industry, spent 13 weeks in a hospital bed. He was positive for the virus for 60 of those 90 days, of which he spent 30 on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. “While on a ventilator, I suffered a stroke, a cardiac arrest and flatlined for 27 minutes,” he says. “I have an infinite amount of gratitude for the doctors and nurses who pounded my chest and used CPR to revive me while I was a ‘coded’ patient for those 27 minutes.” When his ordeal began on March 27, he initially believed he had a mild sinus infection. At noon, he called his fiancé, Carolyn, to tell her he was feeling pretty good from the medications he’d taken. At 7 p.m., he called her again to say he needed to go to the hospital immediately. He tested positive for COVID-19 and stayed at Ochsner Medical Center – Hancock for four weeks. The next several weeks were filled with progress and near-fatal setbacks, as well as a few hospital transfers. When Morgan was ready to go to a rehabilitation facility, his children researched several options and were impressed with the information Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital presented online.

confirming the opinion of my children,” Morgan says. “I was initially impressed with the openness and caring of the patients by the nurses and therapists. It appeared that the chemistry that the therapists had between each other was outstanding, and it made me feel very comfortable in attending the therapy sessions each day.” He’s equally satisfied with Encompass Health’s home health care service that has been provided since his discharge; he’s being treated by three therapists each week. A partner of Memorial, Encompass Health specializes in helping patients rebound after a life-changing illness or injury. By complying with national standards for quality and safety, Encompass Health has been accredited by The Joint Commission and has earned the commission’s gold seal of approval for disease-specific care certification in stroke rehabilitation. “I would welcome the chance to recommend Encompass Health and to share my experience with others seeking rehab work,” Morgan says. Morgan remains taken aback by how the virus overwhelmed him in seven short hours, and his gratitude abounds for all the medical personnel who worked so hard to save his life. If you suspect you have COVID-19, he urges, don’t delay in seeking care. “My advice to anyone now would be to take this virus seriously,” he says.

Abby and Shane's

TRANSFORMATION STORY BEFORE OUR TRANSFORMATION

Shane and I have always been overweight. We have struggled through years of keto, intermittent fasting, calorie counting, macro counting, etc. We have lost weight, then gained it back plus more. Together, we were at our heaviest in January. Our reason for changing our lifestyle was our children. Our boys, Ben (5) and Teddy (2), deserve healthy parents. We have many years of baseball, soccer and football in our future. We had to get in shape to keep up with our children. They are our "why."

OUR GOAL

Initially, our goal was weight loss. We never dreamed we would have these results. In early February, we decided to give a new program a try. Without knowing what was coming in the next few months (quarantine, layoffs, school closures), we started the week of Mardi Gras. We thought if we could get through Mardi Gras while adhering to the program, we could get through anything. We had no idea what was in store for us in the coming days.

WHAT WE DID

Shane and I were assigned a coach who required us to be in touch every day. Along with that accountability, we had once-aweek check-in meetings with our coaches. Our coaches started by using a Fit3D body scan to get our baseline measurements and general body shape stats. With a grocery list and simple recipes to follow, we found we had a lot of options for snacks and meals. We meal prepped, recipe tested and kicked a lot of bad habits out the door. It felt good to say no to junk!

HOW IT WORKED

The habits we formed on day one are with us on day 135. Shane and I now know healthy portion sizes and smart choices for meals. We saw results immediately and were so surprised at our first weigh-in on day 30. Our Fit3D body scan showed body fat lost, inches lost and weight loss in just one month. We found it easy to stick with the program when we were seeing this kind of progress. Our lifestyle program is designed for sustainable weight loss. What it gave us was our lives back; the weight loss was an added bonus. We are active. We are energized. We are off medications and seeing benefits in every aspect of our lives and

marriage. We can keep up with our children and make healthy choices anywhere we go. We are on day 135 and wearing sizes we’ve never worn before. Shane is down a combined 121 pounds and inches. I am down a combined 80 pounds and inches. Almost every day, we look at each other and say “wow!” I attribute our success to doing it together as a couple. We meal prep weekly and have found a rhythm for easily maneuvering our way through the work week and weekend while staying on track. Being accountable to each other, as well as our coaches, was key in our journey.

THE MOST DIFFICULT PART

Three weeks into our lifestyle change, the country entered lockdown, and Shane and I both were laid off temporarily. Next, our children's preschool closed, and grocery items were hard to find. We managed to sustain a constant weight loss during the most stressful time in our lives as a married couple.

HOW WE FEEL TODAY

I can say that stress eating is a thing of my past. I broke that habit and never want to go back. I was a huge skeptic of things like “one-on-one” coaching” and eating plans that promised large results. I am so happy that Shane and I took the first step with our coaches. We have a lot of respect for this lifestyle program that has taught us how to live better, feel better and be a better version of ourselves for our reasons "why."

Flexing your mental muscle

BY KAROL BRANDT

Think about the strongest people you know. Against all odds, they focus on getting up and getting better. They do not stay down, but crawl, push and rise from the valley to the peak. Despite the hand they were dealt, they express gratitude for what they have rather than focus on everything they’ve lost. They learn from and value the wisdom gained from their struggles and pain. I’ve also seen countless people succumb to their environment. They feel sorry for themselves, deeming their situation worse than others’. They spend time and mental energy stressing about things they can’t control. They resist change, often believing nothing will improve their circumstances. Consequently, they often stay exactly where they are. The tenacious individuals all had one thing in common: an insatiable desire to build their invisible mental muscle. They were determined to reach their greatest potential despite life’s challenges. Those who collapsed in the face of adversity also shared a common characteristic: a static place in life. They often were passed up for promotions, struggled with long-term relationships and battled with emotional ups and downs. We all know it is so much easier to feel mentally strong when life is going well. But sooner or later, you’ll reach a point when you need all the mental strength you can muster. A health crisis, a financial problem or relationship troubles are just a few of the obstacles you’re likely to face. Your mind can be your best asset or your biggest weakness. When you label yourself as not good enough or not smart enough, you give your negative thoughts the power to influence your emotions and behaviors. You can’t create positive change until you take back control of your thoughts. You can’t perform at your peak without a strong mental muscle — an unstoppable mindset.

WHY YOU NEED YOUR MENTAL STRENGTH MUSCLE TO GROW

Picture someone you consider mentally strong. What does he or she look like? Do you consider yourself mentally strong? Whether you’re leading a company or just want to be a better parent, building mental muscle will help you reach your goals. When you’re mentally strong, you become the best possible version of yourself, and that leads to optimal wellness — the best, happiest and healthiest version of you. Building mental strength is the key to greater life satisfaction, enhanced performance and increased resilience. It’s about creating the kind of life you want. What could you achieve if you pushed yourself to your mental and physical limits? How much could you do if you put your time and energy into the things that truly matter? A strong and resilient mind allows you to answer these questions with confidence. Becoming mentally stronger won’t guarantee success, but it will help you learn from your mistakes and rebound from failure. The more mental muscle you build, the easier life’s inevitable challenges become — and you will become unstoppable.

Nurse practitioners WHO THEY ARE, AND WHAT THEY CAN DO What’s a nurse practitioner, or NP? Many people don’t understand what these skilled professionals do, or how they are different from other health care providers. The basic answer: A nurse practitioner is an advanced-practice registered nurse who BY GARY PORTER has completed an advanced educational and training program. The American Nurses Association reports 60-80 percent of primary and preventive care can be performed by a nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners have been providing health care services to patients for more than 40 years, first emerging in the mid-1960s in response to a nationwide physician shortage. Nurse practitioners’ practice authority may vary from state to state. Their role has expanded to meet the demand for accessible health care and the clinical training to make diagnoses that will guide management and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses. Nurse practitioners play a pivotal role in disease prevention and health promotion.

WHAT CAN A NURSE PRACTIONER DO?

Nurse practitioners can strengthen their role in the health care system as they build on their skills and knowledge with continued education. Based on the scope of practice and competency, a nurse practitioner may: • Provide well/sick care • Offer physical examination, treatment and procedures • Prescribe medications • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies • Offer health risk evaluations • Provide coordination of health care services • Provide health education • Perform certain procedures A training nurse practitioner may pursue either a master’s or doctorate degree. Regulations outline the educational preparation, licensure and certification required for nurse practitioners. They may choose to specialize depending on personal interest. Challenges may arise when addressing health risks and implementing patient education, but to ensure a patient’s best outcome, an effective, therapeutic relationship is needed. Despite obstacles, the focus of medicine is to improve health and quality of life through a patient-centered approach — and nurse practitioners play an important role in that process.

OVERCOMING

post-partum depression Katherine Strickland’s wellness journey leads to health, peace BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Katherine Strickland experienced post-partum depression as long days of feeling numb. “When I did feel emotion, it was extreme,” recalls the Gulfport resident, who is now a mother of two girls, 3-year-old Brailynn and 4-month-old Brooklynn. After delivering Brailynn, “I would look at my baby girl, and my heart would explode with love,” Strickland recalls, “and then there were times that I would be in the laundry room doing laundry, and I would drop to my knees, curl up in a ball and cry until I couldn't breathe.” She didn’t recognize what she was experiencing until a friend went through it a year later. In suffering the condition, Strickland is far from alone; one in nine new mothers have postpartum depression, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Women’s Health, typically causing them to feel empty, emotionless or sad for longer than two weeks during or after pregnancy. While dealing with a heavy emotional burden, Strickland’s attention also turned to her physical weight, as she’d gained 63 pounds while carrying her daughter. “I'm 5 feet, 3 inches (tall), so I felt every pound,” she says. Weight had long been a struggle for Strickland, who moved back home after her first semester of college weighing about 200 pounds. Working with a trainer for five months helped her shed 50 pounds, she says, “and with the discipline I learned through him, and the healthy eating habits I learned, I was able to get the rest of my weight off up until pregnancy.” Strickland couldn't work out until six weeks postpartum, but she could eat healthy, so she started there. Her diet consisted of lots of steamable bags of vegetables, chicken, breakfast omelets and water; she set a goal of drinking half her weight in ounces each day. “When I could exercise again, I started by training myself to run again,” Strickland says. “I started out slow, and by three months postpartum, I would run two miles straight.” Once she’d resumed running, she started incorporating high-intensity interval training (HIIT) into her routine three times a week. By eight months postpartum, she was back to her pre-baby weight. Strickland’s family was extremely supportive through her wellness journey, she says, and helped however they could — like watching the baby while she set out for walks. “My mom prayed for me often, and I could tell my postpartum depression hurt her the most,” she says. “As a mom, I understand it more now. Her baby was hurting, and she couldn't fix it.” Strickland’s internal turmoil took a toll on her relationship with her husband, Jordan, during their first year of marriage, but

112

September 2020

Stickland with her children, Brailynn and Brooklynn

they overcame their obstacles. “I am beyond grateful for the man I have by my side today,” she says. Getting into a routine with workouts and dropping weight helped Strickland rebound and regain her confidence. Returning to Northwood Church also facilitated her recovery. “I started volunteering in the church daycare on Sundays, met other church moms and started feeling like I was a part of something bigger than myself,” she says, “which brought meaning back into my life.” Today, Strickland says she feels content. She gained some weight with her second pregnancy, but she’s come to love the bounce back — admiring what the body is capable of and knowing she’ll reach her goal in her own time. Her experiences prompted a professional transition, and the former architectural drafter is now a personal trainer at Club4Fitness in Gulfport. Strickland says the greatest thing she’s gained is a better selfimage. She’s come to love who she is and hopes to impart the same mindset to her daughters and other women. “There were definitely times during my health and fitness journey I abused my body to meet a fitness goal or saw my diet as a punishment for eating bad or for missing a workout; I have overcome this unhealthy mindset through my spiritual journey,” Strickland says. “Keeping close to God daily gives me the constant reminder that my body was beautifully and wonderfully made.”

Saving on your

HOME INSURANCE

Your home is one of the largest investments you will make during your lifetime. There are so many decisions, such as location, style, construction type and whether to buy an existing home or build a new one. Then comes the price tag, including closing costs, monthly financing, attorney fees, utility deposits and the dreaded insurance experience. All this is almost enough to make you change your mind.

WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME OR ALREADY HAVE ONE, HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON BUYING INSURANCE AND HOW TO GET THE BEST VALUE AND APPROPRIATE COVERAGE FOR THE LOWEST COST. • The home itself is a major factor in determining insurance cost. Better-built and newer homes are the least costly to insure. • The homeowner also influences insurance cost. Statistics reveal that owners with better credit history and fewer claims on their record are better risks for the insurance company, which is making an investment in your home. You may be paying $1,000 for your policy, but the insurance company is promising to pay $100,000 if your home burns to the ground. They need assurances that you are a good risk. • A homeowner with a well-maintained property is a better risk because fewer liability exposures will exist, and this will prevent a possible lawsuit from someone being injured on the property. • Being insured properly and having a good insurance agent also are key factors. Insurance companies know their risk is higher with a consumer who chooses to not

carry the proper coverages because there will be more lawsuits in the event of a claim. A good insurance agent can assist you with understanding your specific needs and offer you the best value for your dollar. • Other discounts are available for wind and flood mitigation, bundling your policies with one company and using smart sensors for water detection and alarm systems with security cameras. • Flood insurance is often misunderstood. This coverage only will be used for rising water outside the home – not damage from a leaking air-conditioning unit. Since Hurricane Katrina, authorities have designated many areas along the Coast more hazardous flood zones, which could detrimentally impact the cost of insurance coverage if there is not continuous coverage in place. And remember, there is a 30-day waiting period, so plan ahead and don’t let your coverage lapse. If you ever plan to sell your home, you will want to have a flood policy in place. Insurance is a contractual promise to pay in the event of a loss. Be certain you understand the provisions in your policy contract to avoid unpleasant surprises at the time of a claim. No policy covers “everything,” and insurance is not a “maintenance” policy. You need to use it for any major losses and fix the small problems yourself. Frequent claims will result in higher costs. The truth about annuities BY KATHY ROGERS

One of the few things people know about Social Security is that contribution is mandatory, and when they get old enough to retire, they will receive a certain amount of money per month as long as they live. An annuity has some similarities; when properly designed, it can provide guaranteed income in retirement and help reduce the risk of running out of money. As with all things, annuities have positive and negative aspects. Here are some of the common myths, along with the facts.

MYTH: ANNUITIES CARRY HIDDEN FEES.

Annuities, like almost all financial products, can include fees, although not all annuities charge a fee. Most annuities do have declining surrender charges. However, all fees are spelled out upfront, and your advisor should disclose them in full.

MYTH: ANNUITIES ARE COMPLICATED.

Annuities are, in fact, among the most straightforward and easiestto-understand financial products. An annuity can be designed to provide a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit that works similar to Social Security or a pension and provide you with a lifetime stream of income.

MYTH: ANNUITIES ARE TIED TO THE STOCK MARKET, SO I COULD LOSE MY MONEY.

A fixed indexed annuity is not invested in the market, but it provides the potential to earn interest linked to an index. Indexed annuities have a zero floor — which means when the market goes up, you are credited with the gain,

116

September 2020

but when the market goes down, you are not charged with the loss.

MYTH: IF I BUY AN ANNUITY, I DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO MY MONEY.

Annuities do contain declining surrender charges, but they also contain provisions allowing you to access a portion of your money without penalty during the surrender period. Depending on the annuity selected, liquidity features may be included that waive penalties or surrender charges in the event of terminal illness or a need for a nursing home or home health care.

MYTH: WHEN I DIE, THE INSURANCE COMPANY KEEPS MY REMAINING MONEY.

Unlike Social Security, when a lifetime guaranteed rider has been added to your annuity, the remaining account value is passed to your beneficiaries when the primary insured dies. Although there is a charge, some annuities can provide enhanced death benefits.

MYTH: I HAVE TO PAY THE INSURANCE AGENT OUT OF MY POCKET TO BUY AN ANNUITY.

You are not required to pay the insurance agent to buy an annuity. Insurance agents are compensated with a commission paid directly from the company; the commission is not deducted from your account balance.

You can buy annuities using qualified or non-qualified money, and taxes on your gains are not payable until you begin withdrawals. A fixed indexed annuity also is a great alternative to a bank CD. While both have surrender charges, only an annuity offers you the ability to take advantage of market gains and shield you from the potential of market loss. There are many different types of annuities; they can provide you with immediate or deferred income. Some can provide two times the income in the event you are unable to perform two activities of daily living. You can purchase an annuity with the intent to never access your money but allow it to safely grow and leave it to your heirs. Selection of an annuity requires a review of your financial needs and situation, as no two circumstances are identical. Meet with a financial professional you know, like and trust; tell him or her the truth about your financial condition. Share your dreams and desires. Only after a thorough review can your advisor make a recommendation that aligns your financial resources with the legacy you want to leave behind. As with all financial products, an annuity is not right for everyone. Don’t believe the hype; take the time to learn the facts. can have unintended consequences

hese days, a greater number of people in long-term relationships are opting to live together without marriage. One reason may be the idea that if the couple splits up, they will not incur the property loss associated with divorce. It is true that, generally, a married couple has property rights not available to single, cohabitating individuals. For instance, even if a deed to real property contains the name of only one spouse, Mississippi law grants spousal homestead rights — allowing the other spouse to stay on the marital property even after the property-owning spouse has died. This is just one exception to the general rule that the name on the deed indicates the owner of the property who has the right to live there. Occasionally, the chancery courts in Mississippi use their equitable power to fashion a unique remedy (or “do equity” — a term meaning that the court can do what is just or equitable given the facts, as opposed to ruling based strictly upon the law). In rare cases, such equitable power may enable a person who has cohabitated with someone for a long period of time to remain living in the house. One such instance was the case of Pickens versus Pickens, in which the litigants had been married in the past but were unmarried at their separation. The court allowed a split of assets despite the woman’s name not appearing on the deed. The court stated that due to the work and contributions of the woman for over 20 years, she was entitled to a split of the assets because it was like a business partnership dissolving. Likewise, in Cates versus Swain, the court held that a female, who was not married to the homeowner, may be entitled to reimbursement of money spent on housing under a theory of “unjust enrichment” if she can show her money went toward down payments, closing costs, etc. Therefore, be forewarned that living together outside of marriage may have unintended consequences when it comes to the real property at the death or split of the parties. It is always safer to consult with an attorney about the likely consequences of your cohabitating actions or discuss whether a prenup could protect your separately owned property after marriage. success Financially, Salter is her family’s bread winner, and her salary at the casino was the highest she’d made in her career when accounting for an annual bonus. “I spent most of my waking hours with my work family,” she says. “Now, that’s been taken away from me.” Her son also was laid off from his food and beverage supervisor job at a casino, and her husband, Brian, lost his position as an on-call banquets bartender — although he still has a job as an independent contractor conducting background investigations. “I (also) have a couple of friends who suffered the same fate as I because of COVID and seem to be doing OK,” she says. “No — better than OK.”

“I put my faith up against my fear any day of the week.”

he longer Maria Salter was away from her job, the less hope she had of returning. For three-and-a-half years, Salter worked as a training manager at a local casino resort. Despite being a self-described introvert, she relished being an “edutainer” — a role that required meeting all the new hires, sharing her experiences with employees and helping people progress. On March 13, Salter learned the casino was closing due to the pandemic — but at that point, layoffs weren’t part of the plan. Fast forward to June 4, and a call came from the vice president of human resources to say her position was gone. “I was hurt,” says the Air Force veteran, wife and mother of two. “I cried — ugly cried — a lot.” As the economy buckled beneath the weight of COVID-19, Salter’s job became one of the virus’s manifold casualties. USA Today reports that 48 million Americans made initial jobless benefits claims in just 15 weeks.

The Salter family: L-R Logan, Brian, Maria and Zachary

For Salter, things are looking up, too. She’s now a Realtor with HL Raymond Properties, specializing in helping first-time buyers achieve home ownership. “I find that when I can hand a young couple or a friend a set of keys to their very first house, it’s euphoric,” she says. “My heart smiles.” Salter was a licensed agent before the layoff and had been practicing part time. She knew Holly Lemoine-Raymond, HL Raymond Properties broker/owner, from working in the gaming industry and had always admired her energy and business savvy. “When (Lemoine-Raymond) decided to open her brokerage, she asked me to come along and help her set up policies and procedures — and she kept needling me to get my license,” Salter recalls. “Reluctantly, I did, and now I know why God put that ball in motion over six years ago.” Although she still grieves her loss, Salter says she’s on the right path. She’s staying busy, building her clientele and setting goals. She looks forward to the many opportunities that lie ahead. “I know people have been praying for me and my family; they’ve prayed over our circumstances, and I can feel it,” she says. “So, never give up. Keep pushing forward.” Salter believes that someone gets out of life what she puts put into it,” and people can be victors rather than victims if they’re willing to do the work. Reflecting on the experience, she’s certain God had a plan. “I never feared for the future,” Salter says. “I put my faith up against my fear any day of the week.”

What's next? How to recession-proof your business

BY RYAN GILES

It’s a great time to be in business. While the rest of the world is sleeping or starting to wake up from COVID-19, we should be hitting the gas. Warren Buffett says that “market share is gained in a crisis.” This means some businesses are gaining market share while others are losing it. How do we make sure that we’re gaining and not losing? How can we recession-proof our business?

CYCLES, NUMBERS, AND RAINY DAYS

• You must know your numbers! I can’t over-stress the importance of this. You cannot recession-proof your business without knowing your numbers. • In every decade, most businesses have six good years, two great years and two bad years. Prepare in the good and great to survive the bad. • Have a rainy-day fund (at least three months of expenses set aside).

HAVE AN OFFENSE-VERSUSDEFENSE MINDSET. ARE YOU PLAYING TO WIN, OR PLAYING NOT TO LOSE? • Create a short-term and longterm plan — and execute it. • Measure progress with a scorecard. • Over-communicate and learn to have effective meetings.

120

September 2020

ACCELERATE YOUR GROWTH (HIT THE GAS)

• If your idea of business development is referrals and networking, step up your game. This is not enough.

CREATE A BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN

• This should include how the company will function in a disaster (e.g. hurricane). • Include personnel and financial plans for surviving on 25-50 percent less revenue.

DIVERSIFY

• While there’s “riches in niches,” don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Some industries struggled during COVID-19 while others were busier than ever.

UPGRADE YOUR TEAM

• This could include replacing some personnel, hiring new talent not typically available or upgrading the skillset of your team members. • Focus on culture. Culture eats strategy for breakfast. • Hire for values, train for skillset. • Improve your processes. As I talk to business leaders around the country, many are preparing for a coming recession. While this is possible, perhaps even likely, the future can be bright if we’re prepared. Who has the best BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Craving an American classic cooked to perfection? We can relate. Whether you want a straightforward sandwich or something more exotic, these spots offer some of the most delectable burgers the Coast has to offer. THE PROJECT LOUNGE

On its Facebook page, the Project Lounge boasts the “best burgers on the Coast” — and bills itself as the place locals go for great food and drinks and good times. Online reviewers from near and far support their claim with comments like, “best burger I’ve had in a long time” and “top 10 burger place for sure!” “We have been doing the same recipe for our sauce that we baste our freshpatted burgers with for 43 years,” says Steve Peterson, managing partner. As for what makes the burgers so tasty, he adds, “It’s the combination of the quality of beef, the sauce and the grill”

>> 208 Iberville Drive, Biloxi

CHARRED

While Charred provides an upscale atmosphere, with emphasis on steak and oysters, don’t overlook the burger. Butchering trimmings are used to create the signature Charred Burger, says Chef Milton Joachim — 8 ounces of ground ribeye, filet and New York strip. “After we sear the burger in a cast iron skillet, we top it with a generous amount of bacon jam,” the chef explains, which adds a bit of sweetness and kick of flavor. A layer of aged cheddar cheese seals everything in, he adds — making for a “simple, delicious” burger. >> 1019 Government St., Ocean Springs

from choices like the Bahama burger, the gravy burger and the California burger — made with fresh-ground angus and served with a choice of house-cut fries, garlic Romano mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, fireside beans or tumbleweed onions. “I would describe (our burgers) as flavorful and juicy,” says owner Jeff Glouner, noting that the meat is prepped with a special seasoning blend and cooked on a flat top rather than a char grill to keep it moist. >> 1894 Beach Blvd., Biloxi; 3008 Bienville Blvd., Ocean Springs

WHITE PILLARS

Chef Austin Sumrall and his wife, Tresse, are proud to serve locally sourced, farmto-table fare at their Biloxi restaurant — set in a restored Southern mansion. Even with a mouth-watering menu that’s regularly updated, featuring options like the cast iron-seared pork chop and smoked and fried chicken, the bone-marrow-andsteak burger is a standout. “Our burger is two 5-ounce patties of ground prime strip loin, Shroomdom Farms oyster mushrooms and bone marrow on house-made brioche buns with duck fat aioli, bacon jam, pickles and bibb lettuce,” Sumrall explains. You’ll definitely need more than one napkin. >> 1696 Beach Blvd., Biloxi

MOCKINGBIRD CAFÉ

Everything is made from scratch at Mockingbird Café — an eclectic eatery located just two blocks from the beachfront in Old Town Bay St. Louis. The restaurant’s iconic Mockingburger is comprised of a patty of ground chuck, brisket and short rib, grilled and topped with lettuce, red onion tomato and cheddar. “It’s delicious, but the bun is part of what makes it special,” says general manager Laura Hurt, adding that the jalapeno cheddar sourdough casing gives the burger “a hint of heat with some sweet.” The sandwich comes with a side of chips, which, of course, are homemade. >> 110 S. 2nd St., Bay St Louis

TAP & CRUST’S tasty secret is in the dough

With over 15 years in the pizza business operating a successful franchise, the owner of one of the Gulf Coast’s newest pizzerias decided it was time to try to go at it alone — spending six months developing the perfect crust. Tap & Crust, located in Ocean Springs, is the creation of owner Mickey Culberson, who when it came time to renew his 15-year franchise agreement chose to start a new chapter instead. After coming up with a catchy name, he took everything he’d learned over the years and opened his new business in the same building this past January. With a desire to keep things more affordable while still using premium ingredients, he revamped the menu with a selection of items he knew people would love, hoping word of mouth would help give his new venture a chance. He was right. People have raved ever since. The streamlined menu consists of appetizers, salads, subs, a bun-less burger and, of course, pizza. You will want to start with an appetizer or two, with choices like hummus, queso or large, premium wings tossed in mild, hot, barbeque, sweet chili or Jamaican jerk sauce. On my visit, I had the buffalo chicken dip, which is a secret recipe made daily from scratch that technically doesn’t contain any buffalo sauce. Culberson wouldn’t tell me all the ingredients, but it sure was a tasty way to start my meal. I also

tried the Southern belle, which consists of grilled and seasoned shrimp and Conecuh sausage, which is hickory-smoked pork sausage made by a family-owned business in Alabama. Made with a fantastic combination of spices and served on a bed of spring mix with a side of homemade rémoulade sauce, it was one of the best appetizers I’ve had in quite a while. You also can get the delicious shrimp and sausage combination on a sub, along with other combinations such as chicken or steak, ham and cheese, a BLT’ish (their take on the classic, with grilled onions, provolone cheese and Applewood smoked bacon) or the “tell us what you want” sub, which can be built from close to 40 toppings. On my visit, I also tried the “burn your buns” burger, which is an 8-ounce Angus beef patty topped with fresh mozzarella, sautéed portobella and button mushrooms, served on a bed of spring mix and drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette. The nontypical, flavorful dish will make you not miss the bun at all and is perfect for those on a low-carb diet. A visit to a place called Tap & Crust wouldn’t be right without trying the pizza. Hand-crafted and stone-baked, nine specialty pizzas are available, along with the option to build your own. Culberson worked hard on creating a uniquely flavored dough, using the best flour available, for six months prior to

opening — varying the recipe every day until he was satisfied. “Everyone can buy high-quality meat and cheeses,” Culberson says. “I knew we had the great toppings because I have been doing that for years, but dough is the magic thing that not everyone can come up with. I wanted to make sure we got the crust right. It’s the very best dough that I have ever had. I’m very happy with it.” I got to experience the chewy and flavorful crust on the two specialty pizzas I tried on my visit. The first was the jerky-que, which is topped with grilled chicken seasoned with Jamaican jerk sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions and a barbecue swirl, making for a great combination of sweet and spicy. It’s one of Tap & Crust’s most popular offerings. I’ll also be returning for the meat-filled T-rex. “Everybody has to watch their budgets,” Culberson says, “but when it comes to eating pizza, compromise on something else. If you’re going to go out to eat pizza, eat pizza at Tap & Crust because it’s going to be the best pizza you’ve ever had.” Tap & Crust is open seven days a week, Sunday through Thursday. 11 a.m.-9 p.m., 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekends. There is a full-service bar offering a wide range of beers and featuring 19 selections on tap, which is the perfect place to bring family and friends.

Scrumptious SALADS BLUE DOG SALAD

Recipe serves one • 2 cups 50/50 mix of arugula and spinach • 6-8 pieces of sliced strawberries • blueberries • 2 tablespoons goat cheese crumbles • 1 tablespoon candied pecans • 1 tablespoon balsamic marinated onions • 2 ounces raspberry vinaigrette - Top with a piece of grilled chicken or fresh salmon for that something extra.

Josh Lord is co-owner of Blue Dog Bistro, the first vegan, keto, paleo and glutenfree friendly eatery on the Coast. In opening the Ocean Springs eatery, Lord says he and his wife, Amber, were inspired by the growing movement to eat healthy — and this tasty, nutritious salad certainly fits that vision. “This recipe is similar to a salad my mother used to make with a homemade raspberry vinaigrette and the best candied pecans ever,” Lord says. “The texture of the pecans with the sweetness of the berries is amazing!

SHRIMP MEDITERRANEAN SALAD Recipe serves one • 4 ounces peeled, deveined shrimp 50/60 • 1 ounce Kalamata olives • 1/2 ounce capers • 1 ounce sliced mushrooms • 1 ounce artichoke hearts • 1 ounce fresh minced garlic • 1 ounce sun-dried tomatoes • 6 ounces salad greens • 1/2 ounce rice flour • 1 ounce non-salted butter • 1/2 teaspoon salt-free blackened seasoning

- Heat 1/2 teaspoon olive oil in pan. Add shrimp to pan with garlic, and cook over medium-high heat for two minutes. - Add all ingredients except the salad greens, and toss in pan for another four minutes. - Serve over greens with dressing on the side

Rob Stinson is an executive chef and entrepreneur who owns Salute Italian Restaurant, which features this healthy, flavorful salad on its “Eat Fit” menu — available for lunch and dinner. Salute is part of the Oschner “Eat Fit” movement, Stinson says, which has gained momentum as an alternative to high-calorie options.

The idea for this salad came from the wedding of an Italian chef’s daughter, he adds, “long before a Mediterranean diet was fashionable.” “I love (that) it is freshly seared and served as a warm salad that wilts the greens while you eat it,” Stinson says.

so you just got By Jennifer Gentile

engaged...

here’s what to do next

Perhaps it happened during a quiet moment between just the two of you. Maybe he tipped off your friends and family, so your nearest and dearest got to witness your happy tears. However the proposal happened, congratulations on your engagement! The wedding journey is just beginning, and as any bride can attest, the todo list can get overwhelming in a hurry. Brides in recent months have had an added layer of complication with COVID-19. As you begin the process, consider the impact the pandemic may have on your plans, such as safety precautions, the size of your celebration and vendor availability. Our advice: Go step by step, and make the most important decisions first. Now that you have the ring, here’s what to do next: S HARE THE NEWS

Tell your VIPs, either by phone or in person, before posting the news to social media.

SET BOUNDARIES

Be prepared for a deluge of opinions about when, where and how you should get married, and accept that you can’t please everyone. Avoid committing or agreeing to anything for the first few weeks while you and your fiancé hone your vision. In the meantime, receive suggestions gratefully, but don’t feel obligated to say “yes.”

SET A DATE

SET A BUDGET

Like your date, you need a budget before you can do much else. Be clear on who is contributing what, and communicate early and often, to prevent misunderstandings later. Head count greatly affects the bottom line (not to mention the size venue you’ll need), so tailor your guest list to what you can reasonably afford.

START RESEARCHING VENUES

This step may well determine your wedding date, as it may depend on when your preferred venue is available. When choosing where to hold your wedding, make sure the venue aligns with your vision, fits your budget and can accommodate your guest list comfortably.

You can’t make many other decisions until you know when the big day will be, so first things first. You may immediately have a season in mind, or even dates that are meaningful to you and your significant other, so you can MOST IMPORTANTLY start there. Take care to avoid any — SAVOR THE MOMENT scheduling conflicts for your VIP Coordinating a wedding can get guests, and make sure you give stressful quickly. This is a onceyourself plenty of time to plan in-a-lifetime occasion, so pause — bearing in mind that many to enjoy it before launching into popular vendors are booked a year planning mode. or moreGULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM in advance. 132

BRIDE’S FAVORITE ELEMENT OF THE WEDDING “Before we entered the reception, our wedding planner arranged a private dinner for us to enjoy our first meal together as husband and wife. Those precious, valuable moments allowed us some uninterrupted time to slow down and experience the joy of being newlyweds.”

HER ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES “It is never too early to start planning. If your budget allows, a wedding planner can make your life so much easier. They will coordinate vendors and handle any unforeseen complications on the big day so you can focus on soaking up every minute. It will go by in a flash!”

Meet the Pro

Carol Ann Powell Owner and Operator

The Venue at Southern Oaks 15461 Northrup Cuevas Road, Gulfport (228) 218-1906 www.venueatsouthernoaks.com Facebook: The Venue at Southern Oaks Farm

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS:

I found the venue estate through prayer in 2013 for my long-time dream of opening a wedding venue. We took a leap of faith and purchased the 30-acre estate known as Wildwood Farm in 2014. We spent about a year and half transitioning it from an equine farm to a wedding venue. We officially opened The Venue at Southern Oaks in spring of 2016, and we are now climate controlled and can accommodate weddings throughout the year — “a love for all seasons.”

WHAT WEDDING-RELATED SERVICES YOU OFFER?

(We offer) lighting, draped fabric, decorations, tables and chairs, and a ceremony site with a beautiful old oak tree, chandelier and pews. We offer the option of an indoor or outdoor ceremony. (We have a) 5000 square-foot, climatecontrolled barn and 2,500 square feet of patios with a fireplace and swing on a 30-acre estate of rolling hills, old fence lines and the most beautiful old oaks.

WHAT MAKES YOUR VENUE SPECIAL OR UNIQUE?

The history of our venue is one of the most loved aspects, and it offers such charm and character as a beautiful backdrop for your perfect day. There is magic in draping fabric, hanging chandeliers, accent lighting and aged barn wood that creates breathtaking photography and lifelong memories. We also provide a bride and groom suite for getting ready on site. We have outdoor and indoor ceremony options and allow the vendor of your choice.

WHAT SHOULD A BRIDE BE LOOKING FOR OR CONSIDERING WHEN CHOOSING A WEDDING VENUE? Ask the following: • What does venue include with the package?

142

GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM

• Does the venue allow any vendor of your choice, such as planner, caterer, etc.? • Does the venue provide a list of preferred vendors to help with the wedding planning process? • How many guests will the venue accommodate? • Does the venue provide security? • Does the venue allow beer, wine or champagne? • Is the venue large enough and equipped to accommodate plan B in case of inclement weather? • Does the venue allow rescheduling of your wedding in an unforeseen or emergency situation?

IF A BRIDE WANTS TO BOOK YOUR VENUE FOR HER WEDDING, HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD SHE BE CONTACTING YOU? WHAT WILL YOU COVER DURING A CONSULTATION?

Many brides book a year or two in advance. We also have brides who choose dates in six months or less. Everyone has different desires and visions. We will give a bridal tour of our venue, answering questions and discussing such things as the history of our barn, crowd size, food placement to spark creativity and ideas for your wedding and ceremony.

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN MISSION AND GOAL WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDINGS?

My hope and desire are to provide the space and atmosphere for your family and friends to join together and create moments and capture memories to last a lifetime. It’s a blessing to be part of the most important day in our couples’ lives.

Plan it! ONLINE gulfcoastweddingsmagazine.com

There is nothing more critical when planning a large event than having a good plan. Just like shopping for Christmas, having a list of things in hand at all times will ensure you don’t spend more money than you have to and helps you stay focused so you aren’t busting your budget on things you ultimately won’t use.
