FOR YOUR FUTURE mgccc ad STRONG COMMUNITIES. QUALIFIED WORKFORCE. SOLID ECONOMY.

Find out more about MGCCC’s four-week

GULF COAST WORK READY PROGRAM and how you can train for a new career at no cost to you! Training is available in Massage Therapy, Commercial Truck Driving and Cosmetology.

For more information about the GCWR program and the training available, call 228-563-2220 or email GCWR@mgccc.edu.

September-October 2018

The project is funded via a Restore Act Grant from the U.S. Department of Treasury in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

MGCCC’S NEW SHORT-TERM TRAINING PROGRAMS OFFER CAREER SUCCESS What do Massage Therapy and Commercial Truck Driving have in common? They are both successful programs offered at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s West Harrison County Center in Long Beach as part of the Gulf Coast Work Ready (GCWR) initiative. The GCWR program is designed to aid Gulf Coast citizens in the attainment of basic, employability and specific industry skills needed in high-demand industries. With that in mind, MGCCC started both Massage Therapy and Commercial Truck Driving classes last year. The Cosmetology program will begin this fall, and in the spring of 2019, the college will begin the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) “Gateway” training and credentialing, along with a maritime technology program.

mgccc ad

“The programs we offer are chosen based on industry demand,” said Millie Hyatt Bordelon, GCWR program director. “On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the service and transportation industries are already a large part of the economy, and they continue to grow. That’s why we decided to begin offering those kinds of programs first.” Bordelon said the soft skills training component is vital. “Employers not only want to hire individuals who are extremely well trained in their specific field, but also those who possess the skills necessary for workplace success, such as effective communication, work ethics and problem solving,” Bordelon said. “We want to ensure the individuals who complete our programs are successful in not only getting jobs in their chosen careers but are also able to keep those jobs and be valuable employees.” Leah Bigelow of Wiggins said she is already using all of the skills she learned in the Massage Therapy program at MGCCC. “I completed the Massage Therapy program in May 2018,” Bigelow said. “Part of that training included how to speak to clients and how to promote my business. We also learned LEAH BIGELOW about anatomy, physiology and massage modalities. The program was a wonderful, rewarding experience with excellent instructors. I’m looking

forward to many years working in the industry.” Formerly a 911 dispatcher, Bigelow became interested in massage therapy after receiving a massage herself several years ago. “I had low-back pain issues and had a massage to help. When I saw how much massage therapy improved my back issues and helped to ease my pain, I started looking into becoming a therapist. However, after seeing the cost of local proprietary schools, I realized it wasn’t something I could afford at that time. I was actually finishing up another program at MGCCC when I found out, through a Facebook post, that they would be offering massage therapy starting in the fall semester of 2017 and that the tuition would be covered under the RESTORE Act grant. It was an amazing opportunity I couldn’t pass up!” Bigelow now works at a salon in Wiggins, where she is building her clientele. “When it really gets going, I expect to see five to six clients a day. I love the atmosphere here and really enjoy what I’m doing and helping people.” Amanda Ducksworth of Gulfport completed the Commercial Truck Driving program in April 2018. Now working for a major trucking company, she said the program offered her what she was looking for. “I love driving and traveling, so this occupation seemed a natural fit for me,” she said. “I’m getting paid to do two of the things I enjoy the most.”

AMANDA DUCKSWORTH

Ducksworth said the CDL program at MGCCC prepared her well for her new job. “One of the reasons I was able to get a job so quickly is because of the outstanding training,” she said. “In fact, I passed my CDL exam on the first attempt, which I was very proud of. During the program, we learned to drive a 10-speed truck and about backing procedures, lane changes, equipment knowledge, navigating in cities and more, and we put all of our new knowledge to the test by practicing driving a truck. Our instructors were awesome, and I felt very confident going into my new job.”

Carmen Bird needed a nudge or two. Not that long ago, she had been at the gym every day, part of a group of women who were faithfully working out at One 80 in D’Iberville. When the gym converted to Crunch Fitness Center, some of the women moved to another gym. Being less motivated, Bird’s everyday workout became an every now and then workout. “I needed to get back on track,” she said. “I knew that I was slacking, and I needed a little help from my friends. I knew there were others like me that needed a little help staying on track.” That led Bird to form Crunch Time Ladies Bringing Sexy Back at the gym. “ I formed the group to help motivate, support and encourage one another – more importantly, to hold each other accountable,” she said. “We have a special group of ladies. We come from different backgrounds and different age groups, yet we all have one thing in common: to be better and stronger than we were yesterday! I love these laSeptember-October 2018 16

dies. We’re not in competition with one another but rather we hold each other up and have fun along the way.” Bird, the owner of Tiffany’s Cleaning Service, has a history of struggles with her weight. “In this crazy busy world, it’s hard to balance work, kids and their sports, and the demands of the day. Most women put themselves last on their list of priorities. That’s where we go wrong,” she said, speaking from experience. “For years I put my life on hold with traveling soccer teams, and traveling baseball and dance teams. I was overweight and depressed.” One day she had to take her son to a beach baseball practice at 5 a.m. That’s right, 5 in the morning. “I decided I would walk while they practiced. As I started walking, I thought, ‘You should run and burn more calories.’ I was 50 years old,” she said. “A few months later, I signed up for my first 5K and joined a gym. It was the best thing that has happened to me.” Continued on page 141

W

hat an amazing honor to be selected as a Finalist for this award! I absolutely LOVE what I do. My mission is to transform people’s lives by helping them improve their health. As owner of Wellness Within and an Osteopathic Physician, I help people reclaim their power by utilizing Functional Medicine. I know what it is to struggle with feeling powerless over your body. I’ve dealt personally with weight changes, gastrointestinal issues, migraines and multiple food sensitivities. Functional Medicine has been what has helped me heal. However, my process was not only physical. As a Doctor and Air Force Veteran, I had to address emotional trauma and mental stress as well, and I still do as an ongoing practice. Most of us are trained to think that the answers or cures are always outside of ourselves. When, in fact, we can facilitate restoring our body to its natural homeostasis by using food as medicine, removing toxic environmental triggers, repleting micronutrient deficiencies, sustainably coping with life stressors, and sleeping better.

wellness within ad

This is why Functional Medicine is so exciting! It focuses on addressing the root cause of chronic illness in a holistic manner. My clinic is set up to conduct deeper laboratory investigation to help uncover micronutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, gut microbiome dysfunction, heavy metal or mold toxicity, hormone imbalances and many other overlooked conditions. None of us are immune to life struggles and the effects of stress. When we don’t cope with mental and emotional stressors, we block the flow of love that can facilitate healing. If you are feeling stuck in your life due to health struggles, I urge you to seek help where you feel supported and validated. All of us have the potential for greatness in whatever aspect of life we wish. Wishing You The Best Of Health, Dr. Liana

THE SURVIVORS

Someone just like me Dr. Tyler Sexton’s own challenges help his young patients face their battles When young patients meet Dr. Tyler Sexton, chair of pediatrics, wound care and hyperbaric medicine at Singing River Health System in Pascagoula, they immediately see not so much a doctor as someone with whom they can identify. There are the superhero T-shirts, for one thing. What kid wouldn’t want to hang out with an adult with the Superman shield emblazoned on his chest? There’s Danny, the black Labrador who helps Sexton in a variety of ways, not the least of which is being a patient listener and a cozy pile of floof. But probably the most important bond a child with special needs could make is sensing that this guy knows. He knows what it’s like to not be just like other kids, to have to do things his own way, to make adjustments. He knows what it’s like to get stares and second and third looks, or, even worse, sympathy. The takeaway for them: This guy didn’t let any of that define him. Tyler Sexton, the 2018 South Mississippi March for Babies chair, was born with spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy, which affects balance and movement below the waist; it also can contribute to a “lazy” eye. Born 12 weeks premature, young Tyler defied the odds by surviving,

huge role in Sexton’s practice. The dog accompanies him pretty much everywhere (but not in surgery). Danny’s first responsibility is in acting as a counterbalance for his human, but the dog is a natural ice breaker and ambassador, and even a furry security blanket for scared young patients. “He has changed my life,” Sexton said of Danny. “Kids love him, and everybody wants to know where Danny is. If I have to leave in him the office for, say, a C section, they want to know where he is. “One time, in residency, a girl was afraid. So I put my service dog in front of her and we performed a spinal tap while she was hugging him,” he recalled. When he’s not working, Sexton enjoys time with Laura and their daughter, Harper Grace. Down time will find him hanging out at the beach with family or hunting or scuba diving. That’s right, scuba diving. “I love scuba diving and swimming. The water is one place where this doesn’t affect me,” he said, referring to his balance issue. His love of water sports, in fact, helped define his interest in hyperbarics. Sexton’s story was featured in an episode of ABC’s “20/20,” titled “The Good Doctors.” “We’re all struggling with something,” he said during the televised interview. “My disability gives me credibility.”

What makes

Tina Seymour run?

Tina Seymour Demoran has run full throttle for most of her life. Not only is she owner and managing attorney at Seymour Law Firm, PLLC, she is owner of Professional-Expert Consulting Services, LLC, and co-owner of Matter Removal, LLC. She also has a medical background that helped pay for law school and has benefited her work in later years.

GCW: How did you discover you had colon cancer? What was your first reaction? Demoran: I was shocked. At 35, healthy, with no prior health history or known family history (at the time), I was numb. It was hard to believe I was sick, let alone that I had what I considered the “old man’s disease.”

She also battled and defeated cancer at a young age.

GCW: Share about your treatment and recovery journey. Demoran: I was lucky. They caught it in stage one, so I didn’t have to take chemo or radiation treatments.

[

]

Demoran recently sat down with Gulf Coast Woman to talk about her motivators, successes and finding love later in life. GCW: Why are you passionate about what you do? Demoran: I truly love being an attorney and businesswoman. There is something about taking a complex issue, whether it be legal or management, and working with my client to ensure that they understand every aspect that needs to be addressed and working together through the problems they face. GCW: Tell us about your childhood and how an experience growing up has impacted your decisions/life. Demoran: When I was a teenager, my dad was involved in a horrible accident. Watching him deal with the loss of his legs, a long and painful rehab, and having to relearn how to walk, I witnessed in his battle a quiet strength that has given any hurdle I have personally faced true perspective. GCW: Tell us about your career and successes. Demoran: I have been blessed to follow a career path that has added value to my current companies in a myriad of ways. From my first job as a waitress in my teen years, to being a nurse assistant in my early 20s while going to respiratory therapy school, to working in the medical field as a therapist during law school, each job taught me the value of hard work and how teams work together. Merging my medical and legal backgrounds helped me excel in the medical field. The management experience I gained working in the medical field gave me the courage to open my own firm and small businesses. GCW: What motivates you? Demoran: Watching my team grow and excel. Knowing that I am responsible for shaping and expanding the careers and futures of others. Knowing I am creating companies that are more than merely about making money. Each company is truly a mission to make my Coast and my state better. September-October 2018 42

GCW: What advice would you like to share with other women about taking care of themselves? Demoran: Listen to your body. Don’t let a doctor reassure you that everything is fine, when you know your body best and feel that it is not fine. Go for that second opinion. I’m living proof that the first opinion is not always correct. I just had to have a hysterectomy this year for large ovarian cysts, after my old ob-gyn had blown off my concerns about excessive bleeding and pain at each visit for over a year. Doctors get busy and don’t always listen to you when you are telling them that something is wrong. My new ob-gyn diagnosed the large cysts within 15 minutes of my first visit. I was in surgery less than two months later. Fortunately, they were caught in the pre-cancerous stage.

Caring. Healing. Guiding. Every step of the way. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

In recognition of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, The Medical Oncology Group wants to make you aware of the warning signs of the disease. Signs are usually subtle such as an upset stomach, abdominal bloating, change in bathroom habits, decreased appetite, weight change or pelvic discomfort. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, see your doctor for further evaluation. In addition to expert, all-encompassing treatment, we consider it our personal responsibility to stay by our patients’ sides every step of the way. We oversee every aspect of a patient’s care. I AM A SURVIVOR

GCW: What did you learn about yourself during your health trial? Demoran: That I’m a hell of a lot stronger than I realized. I was in an unhappy marriage and had literally become numb to everything. I was going through the motions but falling back on confidence and my own faith in my ability to overcome obstacles. When I was diagnosed, it was like someone had wiped the cobwebs from my eyes. I saw everything in a new light. I also realized that I was not immortal. It was time to take chances. GCW: How do you deal with failure, major trials? Demoran: I learn from them: Get up, dust myself off – and move on. GCW: As a girl, what did you want to be when you grew up? Demoran: A vet. I loved animals. Still do.

Erin Dale

Plans may be diverted, but keep a positive attitude At 28, Erin Dale of Ocean Springs was looking at a future filled with possibilities. Recently married, she and husband Brian were eager to start their family. Then came something neither of them expected: Erin was diagnosed with Grade 1 endometrial carcinoma, a type of cancer that forms in the lining of the uterus. “Being diagnosed with cancer at only 28 taught me that life happens quickly. We may have plans and ideas of how life should happen, but that isn’t how it works,” she said. “We were ready to start our family and that plan has been pushed so far out behind road block after road block. But I’m thankful to still have the opportunity to possibly have a family one day and thankful that I still have this life. The plan has changed (so many times) but here we are, taking it day by day.” Today, Erin is 30 and the owner of Diversion Charters, LLC. She advocates a positive attitude for anyone dealing with a health issue. “Do not allow yourself to get lost in the negative of the situation,” she said. “You must remain brave and your strongest self. Focus on the end goal of the situation. Let that be your motivator. Attitude is everything; we must not feel sorry for ourselves. The hardest battles are given to the strongest soldiers. Live by that, and fight for your health!”

GCW: Who is your inspiration/mentor and why? Demoran: My Aunt Ginger, my mom (Mama Eu), and my daddy. My Aunt Ginger was the first woman I saw working and putting herself through college. I knew I wanted to be like her. Mama Eu was one of the few women business owners on the Coast in the 1970s. She owned a small bakery in St. Martin, and we used to sleep in the kitchen while she prepped for the next day. Later, when she moved the business back to our home, I was there to assist, help her prep, and help run the events she catered. GCW: Tell us about your family (husband, children, etc.) Demoran: My husband and I celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary on Aug. 23, 2018. We have been friends since I was 12 and he was 13. We never dated in high school, but damn, what a difference a few decades can make when you run into each other later on down the road! We are each other’s sounding board and biggest cheerleader in our businesses. He’s a real estate broker, so he knows what it takes to run your own business – the dedication, the hours, the sacrifices. Philip has a 26-year-old son (Nick), and we have a daughterin-law, Cherie, who is absolutely amazing. They gave us a gorgeous granddaughter, Stella Katherine, in January 2017. We are absolutely in love with our blue-eyed grandbaby. GCW: Were you surprised when you were called about being a cover subject for Gulf Coast Woman? What was your reaction? Demoran: Very much so. I am also extremely honored. GCW: Is there anything else you’d like for our audience to know about you? Demoran: We have four inside animals: two dogs, Maggie Mae and Buddy, and two cats, Roxie and Misdemeanor. And a variety of bayou fur-babies who come visit us on the back porch each morning at our little house on the bayou!

I AM A SURVIVOR

A diagnosis changed her perspective Leah Jenkins’s father gave her some valuable advice after she returned from a doctor’s appointment one day. “I know you are stressed and worried, but you have to stay positive and keep going. If you start getting down, then your overall health will be affected,” he told his daughter, who had been diagnosed with aplastic anemia while in her mid-20s. The employee relations specialist received a bone marrow transplant during her treatment. “Those words stuck with me through my journey. I did not let the fact that I was sick bring me to a negative place,” she said. She also began putting her life into perspective. “The second lesson I learned is you cannot take life for granted. I was 25

Leah Jenkins

years old at the time, just built my first home and was all about brand name items. Finding out I was sick helped me to realize materialistic items do not matter. Things can be replaced, but the time spent with my family and friends cannot,” she said. People quickly replaced possessions as priorities in her life. “The advice I would give to someone who is currently dealing with a health issue is to lean on your loved ones. They are there for you and want to help you. They are in a tough situation, too. They are in the spot of wanting to make everything better for you, but they are not able to,” she said. Caregivers and patients have a complicated relationship.

“Take it easy on your caregivers,” she said. “I was lucky enough to have my mom with me every single day that I was at MD Anderson receiving my bone marrow transplant. I know I was not the most pleasant person to be around some days, but she never once got aggravated with me, or at least show me she was aggravated. I do not know what I would have done without her by my side the entire time. “I would also like to say to the caregivers, please do not take it personally if the person you are caring for is in a bad mood or says rude things to you,” Jenkins added. “Please understand, they have a lot of medication going through them that makes them say and act certain ways.”

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Why does childhood obesity matter and what can we do? By Erica Frank, MD, FAAP

Childhood obesity is one of the most pressing health problems facing today’s generation of children. According to the most recent Centers for Disease Control data, the number of children affected by obesity has tripled in the last four decades. In the United States, 1 in 3 children are considered overweight or obese (body mass index of 85th percentile or higher for age and sex) and 1 in 6 are officially classified as obese (body mass index of 95th percentile or higher for age and sex). Mississippi is among the states with the highest prevalence of overweight and obese children – an estimated 35 to 40 percent of our state’s children fall into these categories. Obesity not only has direct health effects on the individual, the effects on the nation’s and state’s economies are staggering. The CDC estimates that obesity in all ages accounts for $190 billion of direct medical costs and obesity in children accounts for $14 billion of direct medical costs. In Mississippi, an estimated $1 billion in healthcare spending is related to obesity. Studies show that an overweight child’s lifetime healthcare costs are nearly $20,000 higher than his healthy-weight peers. School and work absenteeism rates are higher in obese individuals and their families than in in average-weight individuals. Overweight status in childhood has immediate and long-term effects on physical, emotional and social health. In childhood, obese children are at risk for bone and joint problems, asthma, sleep apnea, early puberty, and liver and gallbladder disease. As the rate of obesity in children increases, we are seeing more children with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Children who are overweight are disproportionally subjected to teasing and bullying by their peers, which may lead to low self-esteem, social isolation and depression. Children who are unhappy September-October 2018 52

with their weight are at increased risk for unhealthy diet and eating disorders, depression and substance abuse. Obesity leads to an increased risk of health problems in adults such as heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cancer. What can we do to stop this trend? A lifelong healthy weight starts early. An obese 4- year-old has a 20 percent chance of becoming obese in adulthood, and an obese teenager has an 80 percent chance of obesity in adulthood. We can start from the very first days of life by encouraging breast feeding in all infants. With bottle-fed infants, parents should learn to respect their baby’s hunger and satiety clues (turning away from the bottle, slowed sucking pattern). As a baby moves toward solids, it is important to encourage consuming a variety of foods, concentrating on vegetables and fruits more so than on carbohydrates such as cereals and crackers. Juice should be avoided as should sugar-sweetened foods and beverages. As your child moves into toddlerhood and beyond, encourage regular mealtimes and snacks. Skipping breakfast has been shown to be directly correlated with obesity. Make eating a family affair and make it fun! Shop together for the week’s meals – who can pick out the most colorful vegetables? Visit websites such as www.choosemyplate.gov for healthy menu suggestions and portion sizes for all ages. Explore local farmers’ markets and encourage your children to talk to the growers about their products. Cook together – even the youngest family member can be a sous chef by helping to toss a salad. Make healthy snacks readily available – have cold water, cut-up veggies, fruits, low-fat yogurt and cheese, and whole grain crackers within easy reach of all family members. Having snacks pre-por-

tioned may decrease overeating. Try to avoid using food as a reward or punishment to help decrease the emotional response to food. Get your family active! Turn off the TV, phones and tablets and head outside to explore your neighborhood on foot or on bike. On rainy days, turn your living room into a dance party. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests limiting screen time to less than two hours per day – challenge all family members to beat this goal! One of the easiest and most important things that you can do to help your child maintain a healthy weight is to encourage good sleep habits. Many parents are concerned about their child’s weight. The CDC offers an online BMI calculator for children and teens and will give their percentage for age and sex. If you find that your child’s BMI is >85th percentile, talk to your pediatrician. She will help you and your child develop a roadmap to healthy living by perfecting healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity (at least 30 minutes a day), and improving sleep habits. Your pediatrician also will monitor for obesity-related health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes and elevated cholesterol. We can encourage healthy weight and lifestyles in all children. It may start at home but it extends to our communities and country. Get involved in your local community to improve playgrounds and walking trails. Encourage schools to keep physical education and free playtimes in the daily schedule. Support programs such as community gardens. Together, we can stop the obesity epidemic and help our children’s generation become the healthiest ever. Dr. Erica Frank is a pediatrician with Garden Park Physician Group. She is located at the Pediatric Center, 15190 Community Road, Ste 330. GardenParkDoctors.com

SHINGLES

Vaccine Philip L. Levin, MD

can prevent virus

Of the many diseases lurking to strike at us as we age, shingles is one of the most painful and, fortunately, one that can be prevented. The rash of shingles presents as a burning string of blisters that can occur anywhere on the body, running in a band from front to back on either side, or on the face. About a third of people develop shingles at some point in their life, with half of those living to age 85 suffering at least one attack. The same virus that causes chicken pox causes shingles. When we had chickenpox as a child or received the vaccine, our immune systems developed protection against repeat infections by developing white blood cells specific for the virus. These white cells have a life span of about 40 years, so as we reach 50 years old, if we’re exposed to the same herpes virus that caused the chickenpox, we can get another outbreak, this time manifesting as shingles. Shingles begins with a burning or tingling sensation in just one area of the body. The site may be hypersensitive to touch or itchy. A day or two later, the rash will develop,

How to choose a primary health care physician At some point we all have to find a primary care physician. Maybe you have just graduated and got your first job, or you moved from another area. Perhaps your doctor of 10 years is now out of network with your insurance and you need to find another one. Or maybe your doctor has moved or retired. Whatever the case, it’s important to be established with a primary care physician. This is your “maintenance” doctor, the one who keeps you current on physicals, vaccines and other concerns. If you are an established patient, 56

September-October 2018

initially a patch of redness, and then small blisters pop up within the red rash. Sometimes other viral symptoms occur, such as fever, headache, or fatigue. The pain may be intense. After a few weeks, the rash will resolve. However, the virus continues to linger in the nerve root near the spinal cord. During times of stress the rash and pain may recur. Possible transmission can occur when the blisters are present. That is, chickenpox is very contagious, and shingles is somewhat contagious, but only to people who haven’t already had chicken pox or the vaccines. Certain factors increase the risk of developing shingles, such as age over 50 or immune diseases like HIV, cancer or diabetes. Some medications reduce a person’s immune system as well, including cancer treatments, steroids or anti-rejection medications. During pregnancy, chickenpox may infect the fetus, causing birth defects. While it’s rarely a life-threatening condition, shingles can be very painful. Early treatment with relatively benign SHINGLES VACCINE continued on page 76

it will be easier to get in to see him or her, should you need an unexpected appointment, such as with flu. First, find doctors within your insurance network. Check with your insurance provider for a list of doctors who are in network. Often insurance companies provide a toll-free number, or you can check online. What expertise matches your general health needs? Do you need a family practice, internal medicine or general practice physician? All of these can be identified as primary care doctors. Family practice doctors treat patients from babies to the elderly. Internal medicine doctors focus on prevention, diagnosis and management of diseases and chronic conditions, such as hypertension. And general practice physicians are much like family practice physicians. This is a category where

osteopaths might be found. Think about distance. How close to you, logistically, is this doctor? If you work, is the doctor’s office within a reasonable driving distance? What are the office hours, and do they work for you? With which hospital is the doctor affiliated? Get referrals. Don’t hesitate to ask friends, family members and coworkers, or even other doctors or a pharmacist you might know. If you’re moving, ask your current physician for a suggestion. If your doctor is retiring or moving, he or she might have their own recommendations. Visit. Schedule a face-to-face meeting with the doctor you’ve selected to see if you’re a “fit.” Do you like the staff and were they courteous? Are you comfortable, at ease with the doctor? How long did you have to sit in the waiting room?

ALZHEIMER / DEMENTIA

Philip L. Levin, MD

Alzheimer’s dementia: A slow-moving killer My mother’s imagination created stories. Tales of her childhood, travel adventures and friends spouted out with the least invitation, or even without one. Each telling came embellished with more details, even contradictory endings. As she entered her 80s, it took us a long time to realize that her confabulations hid the beginnings of dementia, a disease that eventually took her life. The leading causes of death – heart attack, cancer, strokes, or pneumonia – all can be diagnosed with specific medical tests. EKGs, CAT scans and other lab work pin the disease process and outline specific treatment programs. In contrast, mental disease, although just as fatal, often takes much longer to recognize and offers fewer options for cure. Diagnosis must be made by clinical evaluation. Dementia is a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. There are many different types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common cause, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. One in 16 people age 65 or older has Alzheimer’s dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic degeneration of the brain that usually starts slowly and worsens progressively over time. The earliest sign is shortterm memory loss, often manifesting as misplacing objects or repeatedly asking the same question. As the disease 58

September-October 2018

progresses, the sufferer will develop problems with language, disorientation (including getting lost easily), mood swings, and issues with self-care. My mother, who had always been meticulous in her cleanliness, refused to brush her teeth, or let anyone else touch them. The cause of Alzheimer’s disease remains obscure. There is a strong genetic component, although hypertension, obesity, depression, and head injuries seem to increase the risk of developing the disease. Regular physical activity may slow the progression, as might mental exercises, such as games and crossword puzzles. No medications help, although sometimes sedatives are prescribed for the sake of the caretakers. While short-term memories are affected early, long-term memories usually remain. My mother decided I was her brother, and often she would turn to me and relate the story of a time we ran through the park chasing the ice-cream man. Late in the disease, these memories fade, and recognition of even close family members is lost. In advanced stages, the Alzheimer’s patient will lose all self-care, developing incontinence and inability to walk. Death usually comes from a complication of these conditions, such as infected bed sores or pneumonia. Recognizing the early signs of Alzheimer’s in your loved ones can help for planning. A doctor’s certification

will enable the caretaker to obtain power of attorney to prevent the patient being a victim of scam artists. Considerations must be made for visiting nurses and eventual nursing home placement. Dementia is a devastating disease, ALZHEIMER continued on page 76

10 SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER'S DEMENTIA • Memory loss that disrupts daily life • Challenges in planning or solving problems. • Difficulty completing familiar tasks • Confusion with time or place • Trouble with visual images or spatial relations • Trouble remembering words when speaking or writing • Misplacing objects • Poor judgment and decision making • Withdrawal from social activities • Changes in mood and personality (www.alz.com)

At 41 years of age and 17 years in my work field, I found myself in a regretful position of being 40 lbs overweight and out of shape. This was a result of poor eating habits, lack of physical activity, and sheer laziness. It was time to put away the excuses, the blame, and guilt and give Fitlife Studio a much needed call. I can say, almost 40 lbs lighter, that my experience with Fitlife Studio has exceeded all of my expectations. I am stronger, with more lean muscle, and increased endurance. My family member (Kristie Johnson) encouraged me to attend a class with Fitlife Studio and I decided to take her up on that offer. Since joining Fitlife I’m down 40 pounds and off of high pressure medication. It hasn’t been an easy road but definitely well worth it. ARTHRITIS

Manage your arthritis pain Of the many diseases we face in aging, arthritis, with its pain and disability, is one of the most bothersome. Arthritis, meaning inflamed joints, comes in several forms, including the most common types of degenerative and inflammatory. Some will have mild cases, stiff morning joints or a leftover sports injury. Others may be struck with a crippling form, a life changing disease. Common arthritis joint symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. Sylvia had taken up running in her 20s, logging over 10 miles a day for more than 15 years. As the big 4-0 arrived, she noticed pain in both knees

the morning after her runs. Her doctor diagnosed her with osteoarthritis, otherwise known as degenerative arthritis, the most common type of arthritis. In this disease, the joint sur62

September-October 2018

faces wear out; the bones rub together and the joint can be destroyed. This problem is most commonly caused by overusing the joint – that is, wearing it out, or secondary to an injury. A knee or ankle with a torn ligament may seem to be healing, yet get worse over time because of degenerative changes. Low back pain from degenerative disc disease is a related disease. Obesity, with its extra pressure on the joints, is another contributing factor. Many therapies can help the patient with degenerative arthritis. Keeping the joint active seems to help more than rest, although resting the joint during acute pain flare-ups is often advised. Using an elastic support bandage, maintaining a healthy weight and taking non-prescription pain meds such as non-steroidals (ibuprofen, naproxen) help with both the pain and the functioning. Sylvia has traded in her running program for a combination of swimming and bicycling, both of which strength the muscles while putting less stress on the damaged joints. Her doctor suggested she may eventually need knee replacements, but for now she uses daily stretching exercises to keep up with her normal activities. “I want to put off surgery as long as I can,” she says, “though, if it comes, I’ll be ready.” Doctors diagnosed my friend Laura with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JLA) at age 13. “It affects me in every way,” she told me. “I was crippled by age 21, tottering on crutches between my classes.” Inflammatory arthritis causes joint deterioration. Laura reported that she had to have all three bones of her ankle frozen and both hips fused into her pelvis.

Philip L. Levin, MD Juvenile idiopathic arthritis belongs to the family of inflammatory arthritides, joint issues caused by the body’s immune system. This family also includes rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. These types can be relentless, causing progressive pain and deteriorating joints to the point, like Laura, the sufferer may not be able to perform normal daily tasks. Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common arthritis, affecting 15 million Americans. Finger joints are usually affected first, with later development in the wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles. Pain when someone else moves the joint, called “passive motion,” is a sensitive test for identifying RA. The intensity of inflammatory arthritis can be influenced by lifestyle choices and medication. Factors such as obesity and smoking have been associated with inflammatory arthritis. Early intervention with some newly introduced medications have had remarkable effects on fighting this disease, including steroids, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) such as hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) or methotrexate, and biologics, such as Humira and Remicade. New medicines are being tried for these conditions, including gene-specific medications like tofacitinib. Medications can arrest the progress and even somewhat reverse RA and JLA. While there’s no cure for arthritis, like all aspects of life; maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be on everyone’s mind. Keep your body trim, eat good foods, exercise in non-joint stress activities, and avoid smoking. If arthritis strikes, work with your doctor for a proper medication regimen.

Things about shoewear that could hurt your football player this season By Dr. Jess Mullens

As we approach the upcoming football season, it is important to protect our children from injury. In a collegiate football study, 28 percent of players suffered some type of injury that year. Foot and ankle injuries are frequent, and even knee and hip injuries can be a result of the shoe/grass interaction. Injury prevention is essential in protecting players, and selecting the best shoe is no easy task. These facts can help when selecting a shoe. SIZE 12 MIGHT NOT BE A SIZE 12 In shoe stores, the choices can be overwhelming. The shoe designs are all different and the models change every year. Our selections usually are narrowed by our size availability. However, our shoe size might not be what we think. Over 50 percent of the population has different sized feet. Each foot should be measured when selecting a shoe, and some people may need to purchase different sized shoes to match large discrepancies. Excess room or overcrowding in a shoe can predispose the foot to injury. Remember, not all sizes are accurate. One survey looking at more than 45 commercially available 2016 size 12 football cleated shoes found that the inner shoe length might be closer to a size 11/13. Also, the shoe’s inner width can vary up to half an inch. FLEXIBLE IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER Historically, the design of the shoe plate has focused on flexibility to match the position demands. However, a lighter and more flexible shoe is not always better for the 64

September-October 2018

athlete. With increased flexibility comes increased stress across the midfoot and forefoot. One study found that 45 percent of professional football players suffer a “turf toe injury” or hyperdorsiflexion injury to the first metatarsophalangeal joint at some point in their career. A stiffer and more supportive shoe does have its benefits. Studies have shown that an increase in stiffness of the shoe can result in performance improvement. However, more research is needed to determine optimal shoe stiffness and how this relates to athlete performance. SLIPPING ISN’T ALWAYS A BAD THING The shoe/ground interaction has implications when it comes to injury. When a cleat touches the ground during a cut, three things can happen: the cleat slides, the cleat tears the surface, or the cleat holds with minimal movement. While athletes would like to avoid falling, a cleat that grips the grass applies a greater force that can lead to injury. Regardless of which shoes you buy, it is important to keep these facts in mind. Football is played at a higher intensity at earlier ages, and protecting the foot and ankle is essential in keeping players safe. Dr. Mullens, a fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon, joined Bienville Orthopedic Specialists in August 2018. A native of Kansas, Dr. Mullens is a well-trained graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of South Alabama in Mobile and a foot and ankle residency at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. Outside of medicine, Dr. Mullens enjoys skiing, golfing, traveling and spending time with his family at the beach.

INFLAMMATION

How are

YOU aging? This question can best be answered by how often you reach for that Advil or, as some people call it, “Vitamin I” (for ibuprofen), implying they take it daily, or at least as often as they take their vitamins. What does this have to do with aging? Inflammation is the underlying cause of malfunction and dysregulation of our cells, and when you put about 37 trillion of them together, these cells make up, well, us. If they are malfunctioning and poorly regulated, they begin to create malfunctioning and poorly regulated tissues and organs, which leads to poorly functioning organ systems, which leads to what we experience as symptoms of aging. As research inextricably connects these two together, the term “inflammAGING” has come into the vernacular. If you are a regular consumer of ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen (Tylenol), allergy medications, antacids or other over-the-counter remedies for any of the “-itises,” you have chronic inflammation. This means that you are most certainly aging faster than your peers who are not dependent on these things to have a pain- (or nuisance-) free existence. So why are we chronically inflamed and what can we do about it? September-October 2018 66

Shaun W. McKee, M.D. We live in an increasingly toxic environment. Each day we breathe diesel fumes as we drive or walk through cities, bathe in chlorinated and fluoridated water, apply petroleum derivatives onto our skin in the form of moisturizers and makeup, and consume large quantities of the herbicide glyphosate (RoundUp is a brand), with which our staple foods such wheat, sugar, soy, corn, and beets are saturated right before harvesting for our consumption. And we wonder why the incidence of thyroid disorders, cancer, autism, ADD, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are skyrocketing. Under ideal conditions, inflammation is a natural protective response to assaults such as these and would be beneficial to us if it weren’t for its constant presence. Our bodies are wonderful self-healing machines. For example, if you accidentally bang your thumb with a hammer, your thumb will likely be as good as new in a few days. But if you hit that same thumb with a hammer every single day for a few years, you eventually will have a non-functioning thumb. This constant environmental assault on our bodies is taking a similar toll. Our cells begin to lose their ability to overcome the stress, heal and detoxify. The inflammation that under normal circumstances is protective becomes the enemy as it breaks down healthy tissue in a phenomenon known as autoimmunity. Coincidentally, autoimmune conditions are significantly on the rise. Obviously the first step in trying to reduce this runaway inflammation would be to stop “hitting your thumb with a hammer.” Try to avoid crops that are sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. Look for “organic” or “non-GMO,” either on the label or as a matter of company policy of the manufacturer.

The next most important step is to enhance the body’s innate defense systems so it’s more able to “put out the fire” of inflammation. We all have some of these cellular protectors or “good guys” standing by, ready to respond to environmental toxins, chemicals and other “bad guys.” The younger we are, the more we have; healthy children have an overabundance of these good guys, but as we get older, our body’s production of the good guys gets turned down like a dimmer switch. This is unfortunate, because as we get older, we are exposed to more and more environmental “bad guys,” not only because they’re cumulative, but also because our environment is increasing in its toxic load. The good news is that we can turn on our body’s ability to make these good guys. This is done through the power of nutrigenomics, which means targeted nutrition that positively impacts gene expression. The right foods actually turn up our bodies’ production of protective enzymes and proteins and turn down those inflammation-producing proteins that cause us to age faster. When we do this correctly, our bodies produce the good guys at the same rate they did when we were much younger, so we’re once again able to put out the “fire within” and slow aging. Certain blends of healthful foods and spices actually activate master regulators of our body’s protective pathways, and the results are astounding. Not only will you look and feel younger, but your bloodwork will show it, because when we improve our bodies’ ability to reduce inflammation, we reduce inflammAGING! anti-viral drugs can help shorten a shingles infection and lessen the chance of complications. The most common complication from shingles is a skin infection from scratching the blisters. However, more serious complications can occur, such as a prolonged burning sensation after the disease has cleared, called postherpetic neuralgia. If the lesions get into the eye, sometimes blindness results. Encephalitis, partial paralysis, or hearing issues rarely occur. Two vaccines against shingles have been developed. Zostavax, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006, provides protection against shingles for about five years. It’s a live vaccine given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm. Shingrix, approved by the FDA in 2017, is the preferred alternative to Zostavax. Studies suggest Shingrix offers protection against shingles beyond five years. It’s a nonliving vaccine made of a virus component and is given in two doses, with two to six months between doses. Shingrix is recommended for people age 50 and older, including those who’ve previously received Zostavax. Zostavax isn’t recommended until age 60. The varicella vaccine (Varivax) has become a routine childhood immunization to prevent chickenpox. The vaccine is also recommended for adults who’ve never had chickenpox. Though the vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get chickenpox or shingles, it will reduce the severity of the disease as well as your chances of complications. Interestingly, since the introduction of vaccine for chickenpox in children, and thus less exposure to the virus to boost natural immunity, the incidence of shingles has seemed to increase, by as much as 90 percent in one study. While many adults think that vaccines are indicated only for children, taking the Shingrix vaccine will greatly reduce your likelihood of contracting the painful shingles infection and its complications. If you’re over 50 and haven’t already had shingles or the vaccine, check with your doctor or contact your local pharmacy to be sure you’re protected.

3D Mammography

With early detection of breast cancer, the 5-year survival rate is almost 100%. What should I expect during my 3D Mammogram?

What are the advantages?

The process of a 3D mammogram is very similar to a conventional 2D mammogram. The technologist positions you, compresses your breast, and takes images from different angles. With a 2D exam, a woman gets two X-rays of each breast, from top to bottom and side-to-side. With three-dimensional imaging, the machine moves around the breast in an arc, taking multiple X-rays from different angles. This technology allows doctors to examine your breast tissue layer by layer.

Instead of viewing the complexities of your breast tissue in a flat image, fine details are more visible and no longer hidden by the tissue above or below. • Better, earlier detection • Increased accuracy • Greater peace of mind Ask your provider to request the 3D tomosynthesis mammogram when writing the order for this screening mammogram.*

Are heart attack symptoms different for women? Yes, they can be. For women, the signs usually are: • Chest pain (heavy ache or pressure) • Pain in your upper body (arms, neck, jaw, back or upper stomach) • Shortness of breath • Breaking out in a cold sweat • Unusual or unexplained tiredness • Feeling dizzy or light-headed • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea) If you think you’re having a heart attack, immediately call 911. According to an American Heart Association survey, one in every three women said they would not call 911 if they thought they were having a heart attack, and few were aware of the most common heart attack symptoms besides chest pain. Call 911 as soon as symptoms arise.

I’m going through menopause, and a friend says she has had great results from hormone therapy. Is that a good solution for all women? According to the FDA, menopause hormone therapy is not for everyone. You should avoid it if: • You think you are pregnant • You have problems with vaginal bleeding • You have certain kinds of cancers • You have had a stroke or heart attack • You have had blood clots • You have liver disease. The FDA adds that, in some women, the therapy may increase risks of serious side effects such as blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer and gall bladder disease. It should always be used at the lowest dose that helps and for the shortest time you need it.

For four decades, Lee Tracy has been a go-to fashion destination for Gulf Coast women. Today, owner Katie Hinkel continues the personalized service her mother and father, Lee and Mike McLaughlin, started in 1978. “I was an infant” in 1978, Hinkel said. “I have literally grown up in the business.” It all began with Connie Shoes in Singing River Mall in Gautier, then Edgewater Mall, where the name changed to Lee Tracy, a reference to Hinkel’s mother’s maiden name. The store then moved to Grand Casino Biloxi and Gulfport, and now Lee Tracy is at the corner of Government Street and Washington Avenue in downtown Ocean Springs. “Hurricane Katrina put us out of business on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for five years. During that time, we kept watching and waiting for the perfect location and found it in the spring of 2010. We love being a part of such a vibrant community where merchants and customers support each other.” Hinkel enjoys sourcing apparel, shoes and accessories from markets and bringing them back to her clients in Mississippi. One feature of the store is its multigenerational approach to fashion. “At Lee Tracy, we can dress the typical 45-year-old woman, her 15-year-old daughter and her 70-yearold mother from head to toe,” Hinkel said. “We take great pride in our collection that includes apparel appropriate for all ages, shoes meant for comfort as well as style, and fabulous jewelry and accessories to pull any look together.”

Among the store’s most popular items are Julie Vos jewelry, Liverpool jeans, OTBT shoes, Hobo handbags, Karlie Clothes and E Newton jewelry. A third generation could be waiting to put her imprint on Lee Tracy. “My vision and hope for Lee Tracy is to continue growing and be able to pass her along to my 11-year-old daughter, Maggie, who can’t wait to start working summers alongside her old mom,” Hinkel said. She is thankful for customers’ continuing support of the small family business. “We are very grateful and promise to continue to give back and support the communities that have allowed us to live our dream,” she said. 76 76

September-October 2018

We all have our morning makeup routines down to a science. But do you ever wonder if there is a better way you can be applying your product? I have put together a few techniques to help save time and to ensure you’re making the most of your makeup routine. EYESHADOW Apply your eyeshadow first. This way, if your shadow falls under your eyes, it is an easy cleanup prior to applying concealer. Simply wipe away residue with a makeup wipe and you’re ready for the next step. CONCEALER AND FOUNDATION I love to apply my liquid foundations and concealer with a fluffy brush as opposed to a sponge or hands. The fluffy brush will effectively buff product into your skin, wear longer and give you full coverage while feeling light and looking airbrushed. POWDER Powders are a great way to set your makeup and help it wear longer. You can use a colorless setting powder to tap along the t-zone of your face to help control shine. LIPLINER Use longwear lipliner as a lipstick all over your lip. This can help define your lip and act as a base underneath a lipstick or a gloss. EYELINER If you’re looking for something quick and effective, I suggest using a good eyeliner pencil. Get one that is smooth and long wearing, and it will make all the difference in the world. To apply the pencil, press the tip onto the top of the lash line and do small strokes across the lash. You can then use a q-tip to smudge the shadow for a smokey look or an angled eyeliner brush to smooth out the line and define it. EYEBROWS Skinny and micro brow pencils are the best for a defined yet soft eyebrow. Define the brow by drawing small strokes into your natural hairs to mimic real hair. Use a spoolie brush to brush the color into your brow and help it look more natural.

Stylists say every professional woman should own these

6 essentials

By Taylor Tobin via Fairygodboss Figuring out what makes a wardrobe “professional” doesn’t come easily these days. Different industries use different standards, and in this age of frequent telecommuting and “not-sobusiness casual” dress codes, older rules for proper workplace attire don’t necessarily apply anymore. But if you’re trying to build a versatile work wardrobe, appropriate for a wide range of positions and environments, certain garments and accessories will give you both flexibility and polish. Fairygodboss asked a team of stylists to weigh in on the items that every professional woman should have in her closet, and we’re sharing their top recommendations.

less undergarments in neutral tones. “You need some seamless underwear for pencil skirts, and you need to make sure it stays in place,” advises Christina Arenas, the D.C.-based CEO of Duchess of Dupont. The name of the game here is VPL (visible panty line) reduction. If you’re wearing a fitted dress, skirt or pair of trousers, seamless underwear will stay put and won’t bunch up underneath your outfit. Arenas recommends the seamless styles from Barcelona-based Janira, but if you need something more easily available, “shapewear shorts like Spanx will reduce the seams.” A BLACK SHEATH DRESS Dresses can be crucial to a minimalistic yet highly professional starter wardrobe. If you stick to neutral tones and classic silhouettes, these one-piece wonders will become reliable workhorses in your closet. Dallas image consultant Christian Ohonba particularly recommends black sheath dresses for this task. A structured blazer While many modern workplaces don’t require employees to wear suits, anyone working in a white-collar profession will still get plenty of mileage out of a well-fitted and structured blazer. A MULTIWAY SHAWL If you’ve ever worked in an office, you probably know the constant summertime struggle of dressing for your building’s arctic AC temperatures. An easy solution? A lightweight and multi-purpose shawl. TIMELESS, UNDERSTATED JEWELRY As far as accessories go, jewelry offers an easy and adaptable way to express your personality and sense of style. But depending on your industry and office culture, a bold statement necklace or an on-trend facial piercing may feel out-ofstep with office norms. On the flip side, a simple and classic piece of jewelry, like a chic watch, a monogram necklace or a strand of pearls can really elevate your look.

A HIGH-QUALITY HANDBAG The ideal handbags for the workplace involve a combination of good looks and high functionality. For best results, you want to seek out a bag featuring premium materials and strong construction, so you don’t end up with snapped straps or worn corners after toting your files and laptop from place to place. Whether you’re working with a Prada budget or seeking out a more economical option, it’s worth setting aside a few bucks for a well-made tote that can last you for years. Sugar and Spice offers a lot of nice

Lu Morgan

Lu Morgan’s interest in designing and sewing clothing goes back to when she was 10 years old. Today, the owner of Sugar and Spice Children’s Apparel in Ocean Springs gets to channel that love into the store she has owned since January 2016. “I was able to purchase an already well-established, well-run boutique” which first opened in 2004, she said, noting that the name carried over from the previous owners. “When talking with the previous owners, we discussed the love of the business. Love and commitment was a must to own the store, and I felt that I could continue with the same passion they had.” The former teacher had to think about such a life change. “The opportunity to own my own store and use my creativity in new, exciting ways was an intriguing thought. When considering the purchase of the store, I had many mixed feelings: worry, excitement and wonder,” she said. “While trying to decide if this was the best decision, my husband said that I was made to do this — I had to try. He was right. I wanted to start this new adventure and see where it took me. Now I have so many new relationships, friends, stories and great memories from the last two and a half years.”

Actually, it wasn’t too much of a stretch. Her attachment to sewing had never left Morgan, who started staying home with her children and running her sewing business from home. She and J.J. Morgan have been married for 16 years and have a daughter, Patricia, and a son, Joseph. “After sewing for years out of my home, a brick-and-mortar store just seemed like the next step. Working with families to try and find that perfect gift, outfit, special item just seemed to come naturally for me,” she said. Sugar and Spice is located in downtown Ocean Springs on Government Street. “Ocean Springs has such a great, energetic atmosphere that people come back year after year to visit. We love everyone who comes back time and again to continue supporting Ocean Springs and small businesses,” Morgan said. Some of the offerings that lead to repeat visits include Paty and Kissy Kissy apparel, Noodle and Boo bath products and the store’s shoe lines, especially Saltwater sandals. Older girls especially appreciate their mermaid jewelry, made in North Mississippi. Sugar and Spice also offers monogramming for items in store as well as those brought in for the personalization. Other services include baby registries, curbside pickup, online sales via Facebook and a play area for the little ones while Mom (or Mimi) shops. Sugar and Spice sells apparel for sizes preemie all the way

to tween 16 in girls. For boys, sizes start at preemie size and carry to size 7 in full outfits. The T-shirt and fishing shirt line goes from birth up to 18/20. The store also is stocked with accessories, toys, gifts and shoes. “My vision for the business is to see it flourish for years to come. Every day we reach more people, make new relationships and help new families,” Morgan said. “I hope to continue expanding the business online and adding to our already great products in store.” It’s definitely a family business. “If you come see me, it is common that you will see my entire family working. Any time you come in, you will be greeted with a smile and sometimes a lick from our fur baby member,” she said. “Without my husband, children, parents and wonderful staff, the shop could not run as smoothly as it does. Everyone is always willing to pitch in and help, and I can’t thank them all enough for their support.” IF YOU GO 1306 Government St. Suite 1, Ocean Springs Monday to Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; (228) 875-1794 Facebook and Instagram

GAME DAY (SHOPPING) STRATEGIES

Certainly football season means cheering on your favorite team and traveling to the games. But let’s be honest. A big part of the fun is going shopping in another town. And who doesn’t love shopping for fall clothes, with their warm colors, cozy textures and opportunities to layer? Here are some popular shops to check out in nearby college towns.

BATON ROUGE Tiger Mania, 8976 Interline Ave., (225) 928-5255; Tiger People Clothiers, 4250 Burbank Drive, (225) 7718958 – If your blood runs purple and gold, these two shops are where fellow fans recommend you go for a transfusion. Chatta Box Boutique, 17650 Highland Road #C; (225) 755-5702 – This upscale boutique, salon and spa has been keeping sorority girls as well as women in Louisiana’s capital city looking fabulous for 50 years. Bella Bella; three locations: 3064 Perkins Road, (225) 343-2352; 7651 Jefferson Highway, (225) 923-1505; 12724 Perkins Road, (225) 757-0090 – A girl is bound to find something irresistible at one of Bella Bella’s three Baton Rouge locations (the fourth one is in Metairie). Nordstrom Rack, Mall of Louisiana, 9330 Mall of Lousiana Blvd., (225) 508-3030; Dillard’s Clearance Center, Cortana Mall, 9701 Cortana Place, (225) 9231712 – If you love a good bargain, carve out time to visit these two stores. HATTIESBURG United Apparel Liquidators, 1829 Hardy St.; (601) 582-5141 – UAL has been clothing fashion-minded college women for decades. You can find high-end items at significantly reduced prices here. Eva Marie’s Boutique, 3901 Hardy St.; (601) 450-0559 – Eva Marie’s is one of those boutiques where both mom and daughter can find something totes adorbs and at great prices. John White Ltd., 215 S. 40th Ave.; (601) 264-2720 – You’ll find the classics with sass here, along with McCarty pottery and great looks for guys. The shop has been serving Hattiesburg since 1983. Sacks Outdoors, 200 E. Pine St.; (601) 582-8111 – If you are or someone you love is an outdoors person, this is your locally owned destination.

September-October 2018

Being fashionable and keeping up with your peers can be a lot of work! Every person has her own individual style and clothing inspiration, so be yourself. Did you know that the selection of your by Jerika Vincent wardrobe can send signals to peers, friends or even strangers? There is nothing wrong with dressing to express yourself, but always remember that if you want to present a certain image and maintain a good reputation, then finding balance between the attire that is appealing but appropriate is the best way to go. Social media is a huge factor that can make or break one’s image. An example: posting photos with less clothing while gaining more followers or just trying to keep up with peers and celebrities. Please make sure to know your image, and if you fall into the social media buzz, be aware that it can reflect your life in the business world. Fall fashion is coming to the Gulf Coast, so wearing the proper wardrobe to school, work, an interview or any occasion is important because it will get you one step closer to looking your best. The Gulf Coast has unpredictable weather but making sure to wear suitable attire for each season will also help convey your character. During the fall, adding layers to any wardrobe will keep you warm and still fashionable. Wearing shorter shorts in the fall can give the wrong signal; instead, try to wear slim-fitting pants or leggings to highlight your figure. A fashion do during the fall is to wear combat boots with skinny jeans and a black leather jacket. Try to spice up your wardrobe with jewelry and hats to match. Remember that school is a place for education, so be sure to think of that while selecting your attire for class. Heading out for lunch with friends? Active wear is the new attire for an everyday look. People are wearing their athleisure wear for running errands or just going on a casual date with friends. Stay cool and classy this fall with the proper clothes. WATCH JERIKA’S FASHION SHOWCASE WLOX-CBS every Saturday Night at 6:30 P.M.

Who we are Experience the Difference

STEPHANIE SHAW

REFINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEAD, HEART, AND HOMEOWNERSHIP Relationships: The architects of our personal, spiritual, and business endeavors and the primary need of all humans. The reason why more than 2.3 billion of us are on social media. And perhaps our success in choosing, developing, and sometimes ending relationships is indicative of our overall success in our personal and professional lives. Stephanie Shaw, Broker/Owner of Latter & Blum Shaw Properties in Gulfport, is keenly aware of the importance of cultivating relationships and could be described as a “client relationship expert.” Stephanie grew up working in her family’s business, Danette Shaw & Company, which joined forces with Latter & Blum in 2005. Her mother Danette has been selling real estate in Gulfport for 42 years. In addition to her success as REALTOR®, she has held numerous positions with local, state, and national real estate associations. She is a John Maxwell Certified coach, sought-after public speaker, and published author. Yet she always makes her agents and their needs a priority. Now in her 10th year at the helm of Latter & Blum Shaw Properties, Stephanie has married her professional achievements and talents. She teaches her agents to simplify, focus activities, and sustain motivation in the face of challenges. She reinforces the importance of relationships in building a successful career. Her boutique real estate company has produced some of the top-producing REALTORS® in Mississippi and the Gulf Coast over the past decade.

“We do more than show pretty houses: we educate, negotiate, and advocate for your interests. These are the pillars that inform our professional conduct and support our ability to deliver the best outcome for our clients,” explained Stephanie. “We are primarily in the relationship business, but we are also in the results business.”

ASHLEY ENDRIS

Joined Latter & Blum Shaw Properties 2008

Just ask ASHLEY ENDRIS, who consistently ranks among the top five producers in the Gulf Coast Association of REALTORS® and among the top 30 of 1,400 Latter & Blum agents throughout the Gulf South. Ashley has been with Stephanie’s team since the beginning of her career in 2008. “Stephanie has a great relationship with all her agents and listens. She’s always there when I need her, and that’s important to me,” commented Ashley. Real estate is almost like dating: you have to put time and energy into your relationships and listen to understand the other person’s needs. And you have to be prepared to handle www.gcwmultimedia.com 101 the unexpected. Each day is a new discovery.”

What we Believe

ALIGNING HEAD, HEART, AND HOME

The company’s motto, “Aligning Head, Heart, and Home,” summarizes Latter & Blum Shaw Properties’ agent-client philosophy. “We understand that the dream of homeownership begins in the heart, so we align our ‘heads’ with your heart to find the perfect home for you and your family,” explained Stephanie. “To become good real estate agents, we must first become great listeners. Our relationship as a trusted advisor begins with our first conversation and goes far beyond the sale,” she added.

STEPHANIE COWART Joined Latter & Blum Shaw Properties 2017

Stephanie Cowart, who joined the team in 2018 explains what attracted her to the company. “I was drawn to Latter & Blum Shaw Properties’ well-respected brand and its local, client-centered approach. We focus on truly listening to our clients to understand their specific needs to develop a tailored plan. There’s no ‘cookie cutter’ approach applied to real estate transactions here.”

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS What does the next decade hold for Latter & Blum Shaw Properties? “One thing is constant in real estate: change. I look forward to helping my team navigate the complexities of the market and training them to be as prepared as possible with informed, sound advice. My agents are like family. I’ll continue to love and respect them and cultivate my relationship with them. I’ll cheer their successes and applaud their growth as great listeners and advocates for their clients,” stated Stephanie Shaw. 102

I have so enjoyed working in the kind of atmosphere that makes the Latter & Blum concept work. Stephanie Shaw, our Broker/Owner, is always willing to go to bat for the agents and this is very reassuring. She is constantly finding new training material to keep her agents informed and engaged. I have strived to do an outstanding job throughout my September-October entire 2018 career, and I feel that I am on track to do the same with real estate.

Jennifer Parker Joined Latter & Blum Shaw Properties 2017 I love my Latter & Blum family, and I really mean family when I say it. We are all close-knit and support each other. Our overall goal is to make sure we give our clients 110%, and that they have a positive experience with their buying or selling needs.

Todd Duncan Joined Latter & Blum Shaw Properties 2017 I was attracted to Latter & Blum Shaw Properties’ focus on agent education and their client-centered approach. I enjoy the boutique, family atmosphere of our office. If I ever need help, there’s always someone willing to assist me.

Donna Lishen Joined Latter & Blum Shaw Properties 2018 Moving to Latter & Blum Shaw Properties from a large, national brokerage has really energized me. I wanted a franchised operation that would be around for the long haul, yet offered a boutique atmosphere. We are focused on providing the very best client experience, and we do that with preparation, preparation, preparation!

Kristen Garriga Joined Latter & Blum Shaw Properties 2018 Honestly, everyone here is more like family… I love that I get to come to work every day and always have something fun and entertaining to work on. I’m able to network and work alongside so many wonderful people in this community and my office. Being with this company has opened many doors for my family. I can’t wait to see what it will open up for us in the future.

by Dr. Stephanie Barnes

You have to move away from the wall

I remember the first time I went ice skating. I was 37 years old. I was very apprehensive about learning to skate so late in age. What if I fell? Would I break my wrist? Bust my lip? Knock out a tooth? All of these fears swirled in my head as I went toward the ice. When I put my first skate on the ice, it was incredibly slippery and I feared there would be no way I could remain upright. So I clung to the wall for dear life. I looked up and smiled at a guy laughing at me. I am sure that he and his buddies were taking bets on how quickly I would bite the ice. I took little choppy steps, barely moving forward, still clutching to the wall. As I inched along, there was someone else in front of me, also an older novice, so I could not go forward. I had two choices: I could just shuffle along behind the woman in front of me or I could step out and try my luck skating away from the wall. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LET GO? And just like a metaphor, I stepped out. I stepped out away from the wall and I began to skate on my own. At first, my movements remained stilted as I continued the short, choppy steps. But eventually, I began to take longer glides. With each glide, my confidence gained and I no longer feared falling. When I let go of that fear, it seemed as if I began to skate better. The fear of falling was robbing me of the enjoyment of the thrill of learning to skate. I could not hear the music. I could not even really see the people around me. I was focusing only on my feet and ensuring that they remained firmly attached to the ice. But when I let go, I really began to enjoy myself. After a while, my steps became more and more assured, and with each rotation around the ice rink, my fun level and ability soared. Before you know it, I was gliding to the rhythm of the music. I began to skate as if I had been skating for years. Now, I didn’t try and get too fancy. After all, this was my first time skating. I just skated to my own rhythm. I was having a wonderful time. The cold wind in my face was exhilarating. Who knew skating around millions of times on a piece of ice could be so much fun! I began to notice other novice skaters still holding on to the wall. The lady who was in front of me on the wall was still there. Still skating timidly. Still looking scared. Still skating in fear. There was another woman doing the same thing. I immediately felt sad for them. I wanted to scream out, “You’ll do much better if you just let go. Don’t be afraid. Let go!” 116

September-October 2018

A WALL CAN BECOME YOUR CRUTCH There are many times in our lives where we are clinging to a wall that we need to let go. We use our walls as crutches. These crutches don’t help us, but become tools of dependency. We hold to these walls for dear life because we’re afraid of what will happen when we let go. While bad things can happen, so many great things can happen, too. This reminds me of a poem that asks, why do we fear the power that we have within us? Why are we just as afraid to succeed as we are to fail? Sometimes we just have to let go of the wall. Letting go strengthens us beyond our imagination. We learn new movements. We engage new muscles. We employ new skills. When you hold onto the wall, you don’t need to rely on yourself. Your reliance on the wall stunts the development and slows learning. The best way to learn is to do. The best way to overcome your fear is to face the thing you fear. I am glad that I faced my fear that day. I did not fall one time. Most importantly, I had a fabulous time. Every day, I will let go of the wall. I hope that you will too!

EMPOWERING

WOMEN

IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

MRS. DEBBIE PEARSON Office Manager

Debbie started her career in New Orleans at Bernie Dumas Buick, in 1971. Her first job consisted of learning how to answer phones, greeting customers and processing warranty claims. Strong and persistent are the words that best describe Mrs. Pearson, she has always been up for a challenge and learns quickly. Over the years, she worked through every role in a dealership office. Working as a service cashier, title clerk, billing clerk, payables, receivables, literally every role in an accounting office. She was quickly building her career when she met her husband in 1974. They fell in love immediately and married only two short months later. A little over a year went by and they had their first daughter. Wouldn’t you know that she was back to work within two weeks. Her second daughter came two years later and again back to work in two weeks. Strong and persistent. Debbie fell in love with the Mississippi Gulf Coast when visiting her husband’s mother in Waveland. In the summer of 1982, she and her husband found a beautiful house on the water in Bay St. Louis while she continued to commute to New Orleans. She finally decided to find a job closer to home after hydroplaning across I-10 on one of her morning commutes.

Debbie spent the next 20 years working her way up to office manager between Charlie Henderson Ford and DeRussy Motors in Waveland. During hurricane Katrina, DeRussy motors was submerged under 8 feet of water! Cars were flooded, files lost, and the staff was working out of trailers! Sticking to her strong and persistent nature she remained there through the turmoil of the hurricane and through the great recession until the dealer decided to sell the business. In May 2010, she even adopted her 3 grandsons, welcoming them into her home full time. Strong and persistent. Debbie has now been part of the Allen family for 8 years as the Office Manager. She oversees the entire accounting office and ensures that the financial statement is printed accurately and on time. Her depth of knowledge, amazing work ethic and strong and persistent attitude has helped lead Allen Hyundai through hard times and helped find extra success during good times. Debbie encompasses what it means to be a strong woman in a male dominated work place.

Leadership, management and accountability

How do you hold someone accountable? Accountability is not a dirty word. In fact, your staff wants to be held accountable. That’s right, the “right” employees want you to take an interest in their work, help them plan for their future growth, cheer them on when they meet their goals and ultimately help them be the best team members they can be. So, how do we hold people accountable? The secret is not to focus on accountability, but to focus on being a good leader and manager.

Leadership + Management = Accountability Previously, we discussed what it takes to be a good leader. Just like leadership, you can learn to be a better manager. What does it take to be a good manager? It can be boiled down to five tasks:

by Ryan Giles Ryan@TractionStrong.com

1

Keep expectations clear. When it comes to managing your staff, do they know what’s expected of them (goals, roles, measurables)? Do you know what they expect and need from you?

2

Communicate well. Do you know how to have a conversation with your staff without barking orders? Are you a good coach? Do you listen more than you talk? Do you ask more questions than you make statements?

3

Meet regularly (as a team). Do you have regular (weekly) team meetings for the team to bring up and solve important issues? Do you have a team scorecard to measure the team’s progress toward important goals?

4

Meet regularly (one-on-one). Do you have regular (quarterly) one-on-one meetings with each member of your team? Do you work with each team member to set a quarterly goal, discuss their role within the company and talk about company values? Do you use this opportunity to get feedback on how you can be a better manager?

5

Reward and recognize. Do you give positive or negative feedback quickly (within 24 hours)? Do you criticize in private and praise in public? Do you remember that you’re their boss first (before friendships)? Do you have a formal disciplinary process for handling poor performance (a process that is always followed)?

Can you answer “yes” to each of the questions above? If not, pick one and determine to work on it over the next 90 days. Giles is an EOS implementer with Traction Strong. Find out more about him at www.TractionStrong.com or reach him at Ryan@TractionStrong.com.

Create a legacy in your room design First, identify your values. What is it about you that you want to be most remembered for by others? A favorite quote, saying or verse stenciled or framed in the entrance of your home, in your dining, breakfast or living area. Second, begin gathering your resources: pictures, quotes and things of interest. Something that merits or tells of your heritage. Third, plan how to bring your design to life. A family tree, collection of keepsakes or assorted pictures from past generations framed as a collage. English poet Robert Southey says, “There is magic in that little word ‘home.’ It is a mystic circle that surrounds comfort and virtues never known beyond its hallowed limits.”

Camping made simple with rentals

Photo courtesy Gulf Coast Camper Rentals

Story by Lisa Monti / bslshoofly.com A savvy entrepreneur and nature lover finds that making camping easy for others isn't just fun – it's a growing business. Meet Kristine Lyons of Gulf Coast Camper Rentals. Lyons has held on to fond childhood memories of family camping trips to Buccaneer State Park, exploring nature trails and pulling in fish and crabs on the seawall with her brother. Those special memories were so strong that she wanted her own kids to have similar experiences, so Lyons continued the tradition of camping at Buccaneer with them as they grew up. Lyons knew that the camping tradition was successfully passed when her daughter asked to go camping on a visit home from college. But there was a hitch. But Lyons takes it one step further by offering delivery and set up of the campers at several campsites in Hancock County and beyond. Her brother, Robert Miller, and his wife, Michelle, take care of delivery and pick up, servicing and cleaning up everything when you’re headed back home. Yes, all the renters have to do is show up and, well, camp. “That’s what we do the best,” she said of the delivery, set up and pick up service. “We’re living in a society where nobody has enough time. They would rather me do the work so they can just show up and have fun. Our motto is, ‘We do the work, you enjoy the adventure!’ ” Locally, Gulf Coast Camper Rentals sets up at Buccaneer State Park, McLeod Park, the campsites connected to the Silver Slipper Casino and Hollywood Casino and nearby Flint Creek in Stone County. The convenience will cost you an additional $85 for locations in Hancock County. Farther afield you pay by the mile. Lately they have set up for campers at the new Reunion 126

September-October 2018

Lake facility in Robert, La., as well as at popular campgrounds in Lumberton and throughout Louisiana and over to Gulf Shores, Ala., and Destin, Fla. Lyons said the campers aren’t used strictly for camping. They’re popular with participants at festivals, Cruisin’ The Coast, ATV events and the annual Gulf Coast Winter Classic horse show in Harrison County. “People use them for mother-in-law suites in their yard and for weddings. Film companies use them when they’re shooting commercials and just to hang out in.” She’s also thinking about adding some special packages for honeymooners and customized services customers may request. “We’re flexible. We just want you to have good time,” she said. It seems that when people get a taste of camping, they enjoy it enough to want to do it again, and that means plenty of repeat business for Gulf Coast Camper Rentals. “Some of our best customers owned campers in the past and are not interested in owning one now. They want to camp a couple of times a year, and renting is cheaper.” The success of the camper rentals led Lyons to buy a building on Mississippi 603 and open a camper store, which is stocked with camper parts and supplies, everything from water hoses to backup cameras. “We’re doing camper service now, too,” she said. She and her brother are newly certified recreational vehicle inspectors available for those looking to invest in an RV. “We’re trying to be a one-stop shop,” Lyons said. And she’s keeping the family camping tradition going these days by taking her grandchildren camping at Buccaneer. “Basically, camping is making memories,” she said. “Even the most miserable times we had camping we still laugh about today.”

How to estimate tax payments Receiving income from sources other than a W-2 may cause you to pay estimated tax payments. Some common income sources are interest, dividends, capital gains, winnings and income from self-employment, partnerships and S corporations. If your income is steady from period to period, paying four equal installments based on the prior-year tax return may be your best approach. If your income fluctuates, it may be better to annualize your current year tax to determine each payment. The annualized approach is more complicated but has a better matching by TIna Perkins of your tax payments to your varying income levels. The IRS likes to receive the tax on your income as you receive the income. They will penalize you if you under pay or skip a payment, charging you the federal interest rate on your underpayment for every day your payment is underpaid. QUARTERLY DUE DATES The quarterly due dates are on the 15th day of the fourth, sixth and ninth months of the current year and the 15th day of the first month of next year for both calendar year and fiscal year taxpayers. As with all IRS due dates, if the due date falls on the weekend or holiday, the due date is extended to the next day that is not a weekend day or holiday.

(A holiday is any legal holiday in the District of Columbia.) These quarterly due dates do not coincide with the calendar quarters. 2018 income periods Jan. 1 – March 31 April 1 – May 31 June 1 – Aug. 31 Sept. 1 – Dec. 31

ESTIMATED PAYMENT METHODS The easiest method to estimate your tax is to look to your prior-year tax liability. Make sure that you pay in 100 percent of it. If your income tax withholding does not cover your tax liability, then you need to pay estimated tax payments to cover the shortfall. This safe harbor method is simple and saves you from paying a penalty if your tax is actually more. However, it could leave you short on covering your total current-year tax liability, since it is only an estimate and does not factor in changes you may experience. Examples of personal changes are an increase in income from your flow-through business, a divorce, or a loss in the child tax credit. It also does not allow for the changes you will experience from the recently passed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act tax law. The annualized method means taking the actual income, deductions and other events that occurred during the www.gcwmultimedia.com

period (from the beginning of the tax year through the end of the quarter period) and adjusting them to annual amounts. The formula to annualize is income (or deductions) multiplied by a ratio of the “number of months in the year” divided by the “number of months of data.” For example, say your net income for January, February and March is $8,000, $16,000 and $12,000, respectively. The annualized income is $144,000 calculated as ($8,000 + $16,000 + $12,000) x 12/3 months of data. Your quarterly tax payment is then calculated on your annualized taxable income. This formula is recomputed for each quarter using the data from the beginning of the year through the month prior to the month payment is due. PAYMENT MEANS There are several ways to pay your estimated tax. Pay by direct transfer from your bank account, or pay by debit or credit card using a pay-by-phone system or the internet. Send in your payment via check or money order along with a Form 1040-ES payment voucher. ESTIMATED TAX PAYMENTS AVOIDED Instead of making estimated payments, you can increase your withholding through your employer by filing a new W-4. You can also have your prior year’s tax refund applied to your current year tax obligation.

ESTIMATED TAX PENALTY If you didn’t pay enough tax through payroll withholding or timely estimated tax payments, your estimated taxes are underpaid and you may have to pay a penalty. Generally, you will not have to pay a penalty if any of the following are applicable. • Your withholdings and timely estimated tax payments are at least 100 percent of your prior year tax liability. (Higher income taxpayers will have to substitute 110 percent for 100 percent if their prior year adjusted gross income is more than $150,000.) • You paid 90 percent of the current year tax liability. • You owe less than $1,000 when you file your tax return. • You had no tax liability for the prior year which represented a full 12 months and you were a U.S. citizen. If you figured your estimated payments using the annualized method, you will file Form 2210 – Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates, and Trusts to mitigate or eliminate the penalty for under paying your quarterly taxes. Remember, everyone’s tax situation is different. You should talk with your tax advisor to determine what is right for you. Exit stage right – or exit stage wrong

Most business owners are people with a dream who are willing to do whatever it takes to make their dream a reality. They work hard to start their business and to see their dream become a reality of success. Often, it is not until they began to approach retirement age that they begin to think about their exit strategy. For all their hard work and planning to be successful in their business, they fail to take into consideration what will happen to their business – and their income from it – when they are no longer willing or able to run it. They often simply assume that their children will be as passionate about their business as they are. Unfortunately, this is very often not the case. Sometimes what the business owner believes will be a wonderful discussion about turning over the business reveals that their child’s passion is very different and the child has no desire to take on the responsibilities of day-to-day operation. A business owner also may be confronted with the fact that the child has very different capabilities and lacks the skills necessary to successfully continue the business. Next comes the realization that the business must be sold. This presents its own problems. Often, for various reasons, the business owner keeps the business cash poor. To a prospective buyer, it appears that the business has nowhere near the value that the current owner feels it has. What happens now? Do you sell your business for a fraction of its worth? Do you try to help an employee buy it? Do you simply close the doors? According to a 2016 BMO Wealth Report, “Most Small Business Owners Not Prepared for Retirement,” the majority of business owners between 45 and 64 years old are not financially prepared for the retirement they envision. The report states that when asked how much they had saved for their retirement, 75 percent indicated they had saved less than $100,000 and only 8 percent indicated they had saved more than $500,000. Four out of five of the respondents indicated they had saved only $25,000 or less for their retirement on an annual basis. As a business owner, planning for retirement is made even more complex by fluctuating profitability, cash flow and the need to continue to draw income from the operating business. Here are some financial planning tips that can help you, as a business owner, prepare for your retirement. CREATE A WRITTEN BUSINESS PLAN This can be a great tool to help you and others understand where you are now and you plan to implement your 136

vision for the future. This is also a document often required by lenders should you need to borrow money. BUY CORPORATELY OWNED LIFE INSURANCE Life insurance is an effective way to protect the assets of your business should one or more of the business owners die. It can be used to buy out the interest of a surviving spouse or family member and thereby allow remaining business partners to retain control of the business. Seek out a local life insurance professional; in planning or time of crisis it is much easier to deal with a local professional you know and trust than someone at a call center. FIND SOURCES OF CAPITAL Business lines of credit, business credit cards, government loans and venture capital are all ways of sourcing capital. A financial professional can help direct you to the most suitable type. DISCUSS TAX PLANNING Hire a tax professional; he or she can help you enhance your personal wealth through your business by discussing different types of corporate entities. Your financial professional also can help you with options to help reduce your taxes in retirement. Develop relationships with local professionals you know and trust who can help you navigate the items I have listed above; it can make a lot of difference for the future.

FAMILY

1. Help them make a plan

Develop a strategy for dealing with homework. On heavy homework nights or when there's an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child to break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a schedule and make sure to take time for breaks. Once you find a plan that works for your family, stick with it.

}

Turn off the TV, Netflix, the phone (or put it on Do Not Disturb/Airplane Mode), and any other potential distractions. Close unnecessary programs on the computer. Be mindful about the type and volume of music. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.

3. Make sure kids do their own work When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers. Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that someone will do the work for him or her when it gets tough. Homework is a great way for kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills.

}

4. Know the teachers

Meet with your child's teacher to discuss the nature of the approach to topics that your child is being taught. Go to school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved.

5. Be positive about homework

Tell your child the importance of school. Be a motivator. Show interest and ask about assignments, quizzes and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework and make yourself available for questions and concerns. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child picks up.

A mother's perspective

GCW AFFILIATE

When your child is diagnosed with CANCER By Jennifer Bell, courtesy of Gulf Coast Moms Blog

Samantha Bell, left, pictured with her mother, Jennifer Bell, is the Honored Hero for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk.

JENNIFER'S ADVICE • Try as best you can to remain positive and hopeful, even during the darkest times. • Pray, pray and pray some more. Keep your eyes focused on God. • Listen to the doctors and nurses. Ask questions if you are not sure about a recommendation or course of treatment. Feel free to speak openly with them about your feelings and frustrations and any other concerns about the course of treatment, side effects or any other issues that arise. • Reach out to people for help. Many people want to help but just do not know how or what may be needed. The help that they provide, no matter how big or small, will free up your time and energy to focus on your child.

September-October 2018

It was the summer before my daughter Samantha’s freshman year. Like most teenagers approaching high school, she was entering a new and exciting phase in her life. She was social, always planning fun activities with her friends. She was also athletic. She played softball and soccer and had just made the cheer team for Gulfport High. On June 28, 2016, our lives changed forever. Sam had just come back from a week of fun at Disney World with her father. The next day she was struggling with strength training at softball practice. We knew something wasn’t right because she was in tears when she got in the car after practice. We were supposed to have lunch that day but made the decision to take her to the doctor right away. We were thinking maybe she was anemic. We were not prepared for what we were about to hear. The doctor ordered blood work and a CT scan. An hour later, the doctor told her to go to the ER immediately. I was scared, and so was she. We didn’t know what was going on. So, we prayed. I distinctly remember asking God for his blessing of wisdom and discernment over the doctors and nurses so that they would be able to quickly diagnose her and get her the best treatment. The ER doctor came into the room where Sam, her father and I were waiting and said, “I’ve got to tell you what I think is going on with Samantha. I think she has leukemia. But more tests will have to be performed to know for sure.” In that moment, her life, and ours, changed. This was not a part of the plan she had for her life. Without time to process my feelings, I immediately asked the doctor, “If she were your child, where would you take her?” He quickly responded, “Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.” Less than an hour later, the three of us were in an ambulance headed to New Orleans. We received news that Sam had T-ALL leukemia, which is an aggressive type. The doctors and caregivers at Children’s Hospital were our first answered prayer. Sam

quickly bonded with her oncologist and the nurses At the time Sam was diagnosed, she was 14. Her father and I felt that she was old enough and mature enough to hear what the doctor had to say and to take an active part in the decisions regarding her treatment. At first, she was scared and unsure that she even wanted to do treatment. But I told her that was not an option — she would have chemotherapy as the doctor recommended. I was amazed by my daughter’s resolve during those early days and on the toughest days of treatment. After the shock of the news sank in, Sam was determined to be upbeat and positive. She relied heavily on her faith in God . We lived life one day at a time. It was amazing to see God’s grace through the journey, especially as people — strangers — showed so much love and compassion to us. Sam’s first stay in the hospital was about three weeks. We would go back and forth to New Orleans for treatment every few days or sometimes weeks, depending on her treatment cycle. After missing her Freshman year of high school, Sam, finally in remission, was able to rejoin her friends and return to school! She continues to excel in her studies, always raising the bar. She now works out at the gym again and is very conscientious of her diet as well, with meal preps. She has truly been an inspiration to watch. She is my hero. I believe there are two things that helped Sam fight cancer: the advancement of medicine in today’s treatment for leukemia and her faith in God’s grace. Thanks to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the treatment for leukemia today and the chance of survival are so much more advanced than they were 20 years ago. My wish and prayer is that no one has to go through this awful disease ever again. And with continued funding, the advancements will allow survival rates to reach 100 percent.

Continued from page 16 At age 51, the woman who had never played sports as a child won her first race trophy. Four years later, she is 40 pounds lighter. Bird has run 13 half marathons and six marathons. A big one is coming up this fall. “In November, I along with my good friend Latisha and Kathy Ruthrauff, will be running the mother of all marathons, the New York City Marathon. Growing up in NYC, watching those crazy runners year after year, I never once dream that one day I would be one of them,” she said. “I get emotional just thinking about it. It doesn’t matter your age or your skills. I had none. You will be amazed of what you can do with a good support team.” Remember that 5 a.m. walk on the beach? That time has become golden to Bird, who gets up at 4 a.m. to be at the gym’s class an hour later. “Getting up at 4 a.m. to get to the gym for 5 a.m. classes was a little hard at first, but soon you get used to it. The 5 a.m. workouts are perfect. You are up early, you take time for you, first, and still get home to send the kids off to school and/or to get to work on time,” she said, adding that the early workouts set the tone for the rest of her day. Monday through Friday, the early birds enjoy a variety of classes, such as spin, HIIT, TRX and B.BT. The women also meet up for early morning runs and Sunday long runs on the beach. “We have some pretty amazing women in our group. Some have lost 42 to 100 pounds, with beautiful transformations."

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT

El Agave:

By Chris Dearman

Serving flavor with flair

Owner Mercedes Carranza, who celebrated the restaurant’s fifth anniversary in August, offers a place to escape and relax while enjoying expertly prepared dishes using only the finest ingredients. “If it’s not on the menu, let us know and we’ll personalize it for you,” Carranza said of his philosophy of making his customers happy. “We’ll make it any way you want it. We always say ‘No rules. Just enjoy your food.’” When you come to El Agave, you will want to enjoy an appetizer or two, with options such as delicious dips, salads, nachos, and other traditional. Complementary homemade chips and salsa can be enhanced by ordering additional cheese, bean or guacamole dips. If you want a real treat, you can also try the Agave Dip, which combines all three and is topped with pico de gallo. “The four-layer dip is fantastic,” Carranza said. “When you combine all four of those flavors on one piece of chip, you’re like, ‘Wow, I didn’t think about all this working out.’” The salads are a great choice as well, with varieties including avocado, taco, tamal, fajita and guacamole. I had the avocado salad topped with perfectly grilled shrimp. All the September-October 2018 142

fresh ingredients combined into one of the best salads I’ve had in quite some time. If you are a fan of nachos, El Agave has you covered with their Classic, Supreme, Fajita Style, Nachos Al Carbon, Shrimp, Chicken, or Steak varieties. If you’re open to trying something a little different, you can get Nacho Fries with your choice of grilled chicken or steak on top of french fries, covered with a delicious cheese sauce, a side of jalapeños, sour cream, and pico de gallo. From there, you can choose from time-honored Tex-Mex favorites to traditional Mexican fare, with a huge variety of steak, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian dishes found on both the lunch and dinner menus. The Chicken & Queso is their most popular dish, with grilled chicken strips seasoned to perfection, covered with cheese sauce, and served with sautéed onions, rice, beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, and flour tortillas. Mouth-watering fajitas are also favorites, with classic steak, chicken, shrimp, or if you are looking for a healthier alternative, try the Zucchini & Red Onion Fajitas. Cooked to perfection in south of the border seasoning, with onions,

bell peppers, and tomatoes, it is indulgent without the guilt. On my visit I tried the Dirty Chick “Anne” Burrito, which is a large burrito stuffed with shredded chicken, rice and beans, and smothered with a delightful green chile pork and cheese sauce. Pairing it with an exquisite Blood Orange Margarita made for the perfect meal that won’t soon be forgotten. “Once you come to El Agave, you are going to pass two or three restaurants before you get here. So we have to make your drive worth it,” Carranza said of trying to keep things affordable so the whole family can enjoy. “We have to draw you in. We have homestyle dishes that no one else has. We have something for everybody.” El Agave is open seven days a week except for holidays. There is a full bar with a Happy Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Be sure to ask about the Kid’s Eat Free on Sundays Monday Seniors Get 25% Off Entrées and Happy Hour All Day

COAST CARES

By Stacey D. Stewart President March of Dimes Here are some highlights of our goals through 2020, which will inspire you to keep fighting for the health of all moms and babies. • We’re accelerating new interventions and solutions with a focus on equity and lowering preterm birth. • This will include a national campaign in at least 30 states, commissioning six research studies integrating social and biological sciences and expanding our Supportive Pregnancy Care program sites. • We’re building a movement by mobilizing people to generate more than 15,000 advocacy actions. • This will include a 5 percent increase in public awareness of disparities around birth, expanding our digital subscribers to 1M and mobilizing 100K volunteers to take action. September-October 2018

Celebrating 80 years of fighting for the health of every family This year March of Dimes is celebrating our 80th anniversary. The world has changed so much since our founding, but the work of March of Dimes is as relevant as ever. As president of this historic organization, I often reflect on how we can meet today’s challenges and continue to serve as the leader in mom and baby health. I am proud of the advances we’ve made in 2017, in particular: • Launching the March of Dimes Prematurity Campaign Collaborative in March • Launching the March of Dimes Perinatal Safety Center in May • Earning GuideStar’s highest level of recognition, the Platinum Seal of Transparency • Rebranding March of Dimes to match our champion spirit and unrivaled legacy And while we gave nearly 4 million babies in this country the best possible start last year, that doesn’t change the fact that nearly half a million of those babies were born prematurely or with birth defects. This urgent health crisis called preterm birth is not going away. In fact, provisional data for 2017 shows it’s getting worse, and U.S. preterm birth rates have risen for the third year in a row. Even though the U.S. is one of the most highly resourced countries in the world, 20 high-income countries have lower

preterm birth rates than every state in the U.S. Shining a light on another problem in this country, women of color have an up to 50 percent higher rate of preterm birth than white women. Our work for all moms, all babies, all families is crucial now. Here’s where March of Dimes can turn things around. We have a history of mobilizing individuals to address a public health crisis – that’s just what we did under Franklin D. Roosevelt, who founded this organization to solve the epidemic of polio. Our commitment today is to combat preterm birth with the mobilization of communities near and far. At March of Dimes, we’re implementing solutions to reduce risk — solutions like group prenatal care — and investigating the underlying causes of preterm birth and maternal and infant death. Answers, preventions and courses of treatment for all families in this country will come from new approaches and data, including collaborations such as our newest March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at Imperial College London. Eighty years of fighting for the health of every family has made us the strong, reliable and empowering organization we are today. We ask each of you to channel your inner FDR to be part of the mobilization—to lead this country toward birth equity and a brighter future for us all.
