Perhaps it happened during a quiet moment between just the two of you. Maybe he tipped off your friends and family, so your nearest and dearest got to witness your happy tears. However the proposal happened, congratulations on your engagement! The wedding journey is just beginning, and as any bride can attest, the to-do list can get overwhelming in a hurry. Our advice: Take the process step by step, and make the most important decisions first. Now that you have the ring, here’s what to do next:

Tell your VIPs, either by phone or in person, before posting the news to social media.

SET BOUNDARIES

Be prepared for a deluge of opinions about when, where and how you should get married, and accept that you can’t please everyone. Avoid committing or agreeing to anything for the first few weeks while you and your fiancé hone your vision. In the meantime, receive suggestions gratefully, but don’t feel obligated to say “yes.”

SET A DATE

You can’t make many other decisions until you know when the big day will be, so first things first. You may immediately have a season in mind, or even dates that are meaningful to you and your significant other, so you can start there. Take care to avoid any scheduling conflicts for your VIP guests, and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan — bearing in mind that many popular vendors are booked a year or more in advance.

Nuptials honor couple’s Vietnamese, Catholic heritage

At the end of a rose petal-strewn path, Linh Nguyen Bui’s future was waiting.

The evening of March 18, 2018, already had promised to be special.

Linh and her boyfriend, Kevin Cuong Bui, were meeting their parents for dinner at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson. When they arrived, Kevin left and asked her to wait for him in the lobby — where his mom came for her a few minutes later.

“As I walked outside to this gorgeous courtyard, I saw a rosepetal path that lead to Kevin waiting by a bridge,” Linh recalls. “The courtyard was filled with balloons, bubbles, lanterns (and) candles, and the song ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri was playing in the background. I was astonished and completely caught by surprise.”

He pointed to the rooftop, where the couple’s family and friends were holding a banner that read, “Will you marry me?” With tears obscuring her vision, Linh says, she didn’t even see what her ring looked like.

“I will never forget our proposal day because it was truly the best day of my life, knowing I would be marrying the sweetest man with the most amazing soul,” she says. “I feel incredibly lucky.”

Since meeting in August of 2012 at the University of Mississippi, the pair have become best friends, Linh says — supporting one another unconditionally. Although they appear to be very different, Linh and her husband have much in common — including similar tastes in food, music and hobbies.

“We are some of the goofiest people you’ll know; we just enjoy being silly and live life to the fullest,” she says. “On our road last trip, we learned the lyrics to some of our favorite rap songs!”

When they married on July 27, 2019, the pair was intent on paying homage to their Vietnamese and Catholic background. They held the ceremony at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral, in Kevin’s hometown of Biloxi, and the Rev. Anthony Quyet Nguyen conducted mass in English and Vietnamese.

“It was truly a magical moment to be able to share our love with everyone …,” Linh says. “(Our wedding) was very sentimental, romantic, glamourous and elegant.”

The couple honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico, and now live in Birmingham, Alabama, where Kevin is a neurology resident and Linh is an optometry student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Linh says her spouse inspires her every day with his motivation and work ethic, as well as his selflessness.

“Kevin’s love for me is just indescribable,” she adds. “It was something I thought never existed.”

According to Gail Pav, sales director with Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry in Gulfport, brides are embracing of-the-moment accents that reflect their personality and grab attention.

2020 will be the year for untraditional shapes and colors, with more of a bohemian vibe. Now is the time to express yourself loudly and proudly. It’s time to be unapologetically, uniquely you.

Yellow gold, which is new to millennials, has resurged in popularity, adding even more color at the base level.

Stacks (stackable rings, bracelets, etc.) and layers (layering necklaces) add a certain flair and individuality to the mix. Even stone shapes have evolved from the traditional solitaire or round to oval, pear and emerald cuts.

These are the items you should deal with immediately because in most cases, there are limited options depending on the size of your wedding.

From a practical perspective if you are not an organized person, you should immediately hire a planner or a consultant to help guide you through the process. Many planners on the Coast also do full- service design so you can have your cake and eat it too by telling the designer what you want and letting them assist you with all of the details. In some cases, a caterer or reception venue coordinator can help you with some details (linen choices, rental items, room layouts or seating plans). But generally, you want your chosen vendors to focus on what they are good at.

This timeframe is the most critical when it comes to planning your wedding.

10 - 12 MONTHS

M eet with the officiant and then plan your ceremony. If you are required to attend counseling or attend classes related to your particular faith, begin these as soon as your officiant says to.

A rrange transportation for yourself and any guests.

O rder your cakes.

S tart your day-of timeline. Work with your planner and other vendors (DJ, photographer) to schedule any special moments you want to be sure are documented.

5 - 6 MONTHS

Purchase your dress.

S elect your wedding party’s attire. Dress availability and alterations can take up to six months, so start this item as soon as possible. Have your guys fitted for their tuxedos as soon as possible as well.

S et up your wedding website, hashtag and handles.

R egister at a minimum of three major retailers with online offerings and at least one local gift registry store.

P lan for your out-of-town guests. Reserve a block of hotel rooms at several different hotels with varying price points. These hotels should be as close to reception location as possible.

S ettle on an invitation design and begin the proofing process. Your invitation may go through several renditions before it’s just right, so give yourself plenty of time. If you are planning on having your invitations hand addressed, hire a calligrapher now.

S tart planning the honeymoon. Make sure your passport and any necessary shots are up to date if you will be traveling out of the country.

I f you are having a number of out-of-town guests, plan welcome gift bags. These need be as simple as a bottle of water, a few snacks and a list of some of the more popular tourist sites where you live.

B uy the shoes you will wearing and bring them to your first dress fitting.

P urchase your veil.

P lan a hair and make-up rehearsal with your stylist.

Make sure they are available for your big day.

V isit your DJ’s website and peruse his or her playlist.

Be sure to let him or her know what songs you definitely want (especially your first dances) and more importantly, those you don’t want to hear at all. If you are planning on live entertainment, make sure they can perform your first dances or have the availability to play them digitally.

P lan the rehearsal dinner. Settle on the guest list and reserve the venue.

F inalize invitations and place the order. Some processes can take up to four weeks to print, so give yourself plenty of time to mail.

4 MONTHS

T rack your RSVPs and call people who haven’t replied.

N o more than 30 days ahead, get your marriage license.

M ail rehearsal dinner invitations.

T hird and final dress fitting.

P ay your final fees to as many of your vendors as you can.

1 MONTH

M ail invitations. RSVP cut off should be about 10 days before the wedding.

This item and the one just above about boutonnieres, while a good idea, is more about practicality and cost savings. While it is certainly a nice thought to pay for these items, one person (usually the bride along with her planner) should handle all of the floral/ decor needs for the wedding so nothing gets forgotten in the shuffle.

If the two of you are paying for your own wedding (which more and more couples are), you might want to head to your marriage counseling classes before you tackle this one. Setting a budget is easy, sticking to it is another matter altogether. Even if your families are going to assist with paying for your big day, you should be respectful of everyone’s budgetary limits.
