Dr. Mary S. Graham, president of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, has led the institution since 2011. During that time, the college has grown to 10 campuses and centers, with more than 3,400 credentials and degrees awarded annually. Recognized nationally as a Top 100 Associate Degree Producer, Military Friendly School, Military Spouse Friendly School, and Great College to Work For, Gulf Coast has reached new heights during Graham’s tenure as president.

From the lush marshes of Louisiana to the warm waters of the Mississippi Sound, the mood and energy of the Gulf Coast are unmistakable.

Equally distinctive are the works of Ocean Springs artist Mary Louise Porter, who captures the region’s essence with a canvas, a paintbrush and an inexhaustible supply of enthusiasm.

“I have always known what I wanted to do in life – create,” says the Shreveport native. “It was natural to pursue my passion for painting and teaching as my life’s work.”

Porter received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in painting from Louisiana State University, and her talent yielded artist-in-residence opportunities in New York, California, Costa Rica and Chicago. Her paintings appear in the permanent collections of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport, the Alexandria Museum of Art in Alexandria, Louisiana and the University of Arkansas in Monticello, Arkansas.

Besides painting professionally, Porter has taught in several public and private schools and at the university level at Northwestern State University of Louisiana and Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

“I am proud of my various achievements in life, but I am also very proud of all the students I have taught,” she says. “Watching them have that ‘ah-ha’ moment of learning to see something new for the first time, that makes it all worthwhile — sharing my passion of what I love with others.”

Travelers passing through the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport can enjoy a selection of the artist’s contemporary

landscapes, which have been installed on the second floor of the terminal building. Porter also created a line of versatile scarves carried at Mimi Reinke Designs, a boutique in downtown Ocean Springs, and an exhibit showcasing her work is planned from December 2024 to May 2025 at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

“I will be featuring examples of my work focusing on the relationship between sea and sky,” she says, “especially that ethereal moment when the two meet on the horizon.”

With their ever-shifting colors, light and movement, landscapes have long intrigued Porter. In graduate school, she painted in oil, but that soon changed to acrylics and other mediums.

“I love the freedom acrylics give me, enabling me to layer color upon color in my paintings,” she says.

Some of Porter’s personal favorite pieces depict the Gulf Coast’s dramatic sunsets and sunrises, which she describes as “some of the most amazing I have seen in all my travels.” Nature, with its abundant beauty and vulnerability, provides an endless source of inspiration to the artist, who depicts winding rivers, peaceful lakes, bountiful fields and other picturesque scenes.

As she steps into the private world of her studio each morning, a fresh cup of coffee in hand, Porter never takes the opportunity to create for granted.

“I have been painting most of my life, and every day is a new learning experience,” she says. “I would not want to do anything else in life.”

EVER WONDER HOW AND WHY THEY CAME TO BE?

THE HEART

As early as the 1250s, a French manuscript titled "Roman de la Poire" (Romance of the Pear), depicted a man offering his heart (which looked somewhat like a pinecone) to his beloved. Heart-like shapes cropped up frequently in medieval art, and during the Renaissance, the symbol’s popularity grew as it was used to depict the sacred heart of Jesus.

By the 18th and 19th centuries, the familiar heart shape had cemented its status as a motif of love and romance.

CUPID

In Roman mythology, Cupid was the god of erotic love, attraction and affection. His Greek counterpart, Eros, was said to play with the emotions of gods and mortals alike — carrying golden arrows to arouse desire and leaden arrows to inspire aversion. Eros was depicted as a handsome man, but by the time Cupid started appearing on Victorians’ Valentine cards, he’d morphed into a playful, mischievous child.

RED ROSES

We also have ancient mythology to thank for associating red roses with romance and devotion. Consider that “rose” is an anagram of Eros, the aforementioned Greek god of love. As one story goes, Eros’s mother, the goddess Aphrodite, ran through a thorn bush to warn her lover, Adonis, about a murder plot against him. The thorns cut her ankles, and roses were said to grow from the mingling of blood and tears when she found she was too late.

The Romans used the flowers for confetti, medicine and perfume, and rose crowns topped the heads of newly married couples.

Later, Shakespeare would show his fondness for the flower by mentioning it more than 70 times in his works. In the Victorian era, when lovers relied on flowers to express

feelings they couldn’t convey verbally, red roses were a simple way to say, “I love you.”

WRITTEN VALENTINES

While imprisoned in the Tower of London, Charles, Duke of Orleans, penned a love note to his wife, Bonnie — referring to her as “my very gentle Valentine.” History records this as the first-known Valentine’s letter.

Valentine’s Day gained popularity in the 1700s, with notes and flowers being exchanged.

In 1913, Hallmark — then known as the Hall Brothers — released the first commercially produced Valentine’s Card.

Limitless determination

Dorothy Shaw reflects on legacy of service, leadership

That’s the lesson Dorothy DuBose Shaw, director, ethics, EEO/DE&I, Ingalls Shipbuilding, learned when she began her 51-year shipyard career fresh out of college.

“I have been in human resources for more than 40 years,” Shaw says. “I did not choose this field. It chose me, and I am grateful that it did.”

Shaw was born in Shubuta, Mississippi, and at age 8, she moved to Moss Point with her family. After graduating from Magnolia High School, she attended Jackson State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. A few years later, Shaw returned home to Moss Point and accepted a job at Ingalls in the lowest-paying clerical position available at the time.

“I only planned to be at Ingalls for six months until I decided what would be next for me,” she recalls. “The six months morphed into many years. I worked in various positions in engineering for four years. I was offered a position in human resources and decided that this presented a new challenge for me, so I took the job. That was perhaps one of the best decisions of my career.”

Shaw now understands her decisions led her to the perfect niche.

“I can deal with people in a way that I never imagined,” she says. “I have the opportunity to

help others by offering them employment, helping them solve work-related problems and guiding them through career decisions.”

However, that career choice was not without its challenges.

“These things were occurring during a time when career opportunities for women, especially women of color, were somewhat limited,” Shaw says. “I was

A Legacy of Shipbuilding

For 85 years, thousands of shipbuilders have found a home at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. In addition to building ships that defend our nation, Ingalls also builds legacies within the families of those shipbuilders, bringing together generations of people who have worked to contribute to a mission so much bigger than ourselves. The generations of shipbuilders who have worked at Ingalls are part of the fabric of the company, weaving together a quilt of unique people and their stories. Here are just a few of the shipbuilders who are following in the footsteps of loved ones that have come before them.

Although she often felt like giving up, Shaw stayed focused.

“Especially when I was told by a male that he would make sure I would never succeed in a leadership position to which I had just been promoted,” she says. “I proved him wrong, and he later acknowledged that I mastered the position.”

That determination and passion for helping others feel important and part of the team remains strong today.

“As an AfricanAmerican female, I have experienced various forms of discrimination in the professional arena,” Shaw says. “It was always my desire to ensure that others did not experience some of the issues that I did. I wanted to work hard and show others that success was attainable no matter your race or gender. I knew what it was like to be the invisible person in the room, and my goal was to ensure that everyone in the room was visible.”

One of her fondest career memories was teaching Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, how to pronounce Pascagoula.

“I was on a national board where Bill and his father were members,” Shaw recalls. “When I started telling him about my employer in Pascagoula, he had difficulty pronouncing the name. We worked on it until he got it right.”

She still serves on numerous boards and organizations throughout the Gulf Coast because she believes communities thrive and grow when residents take an active role.

“I have been a community activist my entire life,” Shaw says. “Giving back is in my DNA. My desire is

always to leave a place better than I found it.”

She attributes that desire and her work ethic to the strong mentors in her life—her mother, the late Dr. Dorothy I. Height, and George Canaga. She recommends finding a wonderful mentor to help uncover your greatest success tools.

“And never ever give up,” she adds.

Now, 51 years after she accepted that first low-paying clerical post that she only planned to stay in for six months, Shaw will retire from the shipyard on Feb. 28.

“My goal is to leave a lasting legacy, and I want people to know that a good work ethic is important,” she says. “I want people to know that they can succeed and should not let things like race or gender stand in their way.”

Her plans include spending more time with her husband of 23 years, Kevin, and their blended family of three children and seven grandchildren. There are also theater and symphony plans to make, leadership books and biographies to read and surprising passions to

pursue.

“The next chapter in my life then begins,” she said. “I will remain actively engaged in the community and perhaps find time to host more tea parties.”

Laura and Angela are both active volunteers in their community. Laura has served on the Hancock Community Development Foundation Board of Directors and is a graduate of Hancock County Leadership. She has served on the board of directors for Knock Out Cancer and on the grant allocation committee for the United Way. She has logged numerous hours for Habitat for Humanity and the Work-Ready Mentor program, which provides mentors to high school students. She

is an active member of American Legion Post 139’s ladies auxiliary.

Angela, who also volunteers at American Legion Post 139, was accepted into the Hancock County Leadership program for 2018/2019. She was a member of Junior Auxiliary of Hancock County, served as a Hancock County Chamber Ambassador, and also worked with the Hancock County Work-Ready Mentor program. Her civic and professional involvements include participating in Rotary Club, Exchange International, Gulf Coast Association of Realtors, Pearl River Board of Realtors as an affiliate, and Business Networking International. She, along with Laura, also served on the grant allocation committee for United Way. Angela taught a homebuyers course at Mercy Housing and Human Development, which provides ownership preparation, financial literacy and counseling, foreclosure prevention, and a variety of educational programs to low-wealth and minority South Mississippians. Angela also has served as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Laura and Angela offer their knowledge and expertise to borrowers in the surrounding counties and parishes. Their business grows from referrals from past clients, friends, family members, local builders, and real estate partners. Both Laura and Angela make themselves available to anyone in need of their services.

Cynthia Joachim

As a broker associate with Coldwell Banker Alfonso Realty, Cynthia Joachim is continuing a family legacy. Her great-grandfather, B.F. Joachim, had successful businesses in New Orleans before moving to Ocean Springs, where he owned and operated businesses and started a waterworks company that became the Ocean Springs Water Department. Cynthia’s grandfather, U.S. “Jack” Joachim, made his mark in real estate when he sold acreage on Fort Bayou that was developed to become the Gulf Hills neighborhood. He also developed the Greater Biloxi subdivision, owned rental properties, and owned and ran three hardware stores and two hotels. Cynthia’s father, Harry J. Joachim, joined the family businesses after World War II and also had a strong interest in real estate. He opened Joachim Realty in downtown Biloxi, which became Harry J. Joachim REALTOR before merging in 2010 with the Alfonso family, who owned and operated Coldwell Banker Alfonso Realty.

Harry opened the first real estate school in Mississippi and opened new state chapters of several professional organizations. He served as state president of the Mississippi REALTORS and of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Board of REALTORS. In 1973, Gov. Bill Waller appointed Harry to serve on the Mississippi Real Estate Commission. He was reappointed by subsequent governors and served 18 years on the commission. He was the only commissioner from Mississippi to serve as president of the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials, representing all real

estate licenses in the U.S. and Canada. He was known as the Dean of Gulf Coast Real Estate and was a highly sought-after speaker and real estate instructor.

Cynthia learned the importance of a demonstrating a strong work ethic, earning an impeccable reputation, and giving back to her community and the industry. She would make her father proud. She has served as president of the Mississippi Association of REALTORS and served as regional vice president of the National Association of REALTORS. She has also earned many professional designations and is a well-known and highly respected real estate instructor, having been four times named the Mississippi Instructor of the Year.

Following in her father’s esteemed path, Cynthia has given much back to the profession. She has chaired major committees for the National Association of REALTORS and has twice been named among Mississippi Business Journal’s 50 Leading Businesswomen.

Like her father, Cynthia is known for providing outstanding customer service, and she is often consulted to give her opinion on matters of ethics and compliance.

Cynthia has built her reputation by keeping current in the profession, by being diligent about every aspect of real estate, and by being devoted to the principles of trustworthy service upon which the Joachim family built its legacy.

A Family-Owned Pharmacy and Gift Store Serving the Gulf Coast Community for Over 70 Years!

French Drug Company was founded by Ed French in 1950, originating on Second Street in Gulfport. In 1960 Ed Bourdin became a partner and the store moved to its current location on the corner of Pass Road & Courthouse Road.

David Lawrence joined French Drug as a pharmacist in 1976 and purchased the store in 1994. That same year John Pittman was hired and started driving the delivery truck. John continued working at French Drug during his college breaks until he graduated pharmacy school from Ole Miss in 2002 when he became a pharmacist at French Drug.

In 2003, one of John’s regular customers, Joanne Blades, insisted that John call her granddaughter, Jessica Martin, for a date. After a blind date in 2003, John and Jessica married in 2004.

John & Jessica purchased the store from David Lawrence in 2014, and David stayed on as a part-time pharmacist until he retired in 2020.

Shortly after purchasing French Drug Company, Jessica left her job as a registered nurse to work beside John to run the family pharmacy. Jessica has completely updated and merchandises the gift shop section and runs the business side of French Drug, helping with scheduling, payroll, etc.

Together John and Jessica have 3 children and 1 grandchild, Tyler’s little girl, Naomi, who is 3.

It’s a true family affair. Tyler (24) has been known to help make deliveries. Paige (16) helps her mom with computer work and stocks shelves, and Charlotte (6) taste tests the candy and tries out the new sunglasses.

While family loyalty is strong, French Drug also owes its success to a legacy of long-time employees. Sabrina Whitehead, a 41-year employee, is Jessica’s right hand! Brian Price, a 37-year employee, is a pharmacy technician. Crystal Fulford, a 25-year employee, is a pharmacy technician.

French Drug stands by their motto of community service for over 70 years. It is the reason everyone loves it. French Drug never closed during Katrina, working tirelessly even without power to fill prescriptions and allowing customers to “I owe you” so they wouldn’t go without medicine. Personal curbside service is offered by our pharmacists to the elderly for immunizations and prescription delivery. Local delivery is a hallmark service that so many elderly and ill depend on. This is what separates us as a family-owned, independent pharmacy from big chains. Our community is at the heart of French Drug.

Suzanne C. martin

Real estate is in her roots.

One could say that Suzanne C. Martin has been in real estate all her life, that her roots are in the business. She grew up watching and eventually working with her father, Kenny Smith, who owned and operated Smith Homes Inc. before opening Coldwell Banker Smith Homes in 1984. Suzanne earned degrees in real estate and insurance from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1988 and has worked as a broker since that time. She served as manager of several Coldwell Banker Smith Homes’ offices before taking the helm of the business in 2017 when her father retired.

Today, some 40 agents work with Suzanne in the Coldwell Banker Smith Homes’ offices, where the focus is on strong customer service that goes beyond expectations. One recent example of that was when Suzanne and an agent met at the home of a client who’d closed on their home a few weeks earlier but had been out of town and were just moving in. Suzanne had kept the homebuyers’ keys for them and had gone with the agent to deliver the keys and a closing gift and to ensure that everything was in order. The buyers mentioned having had some issues with the water, so Suzanne investigated and discovered that a pipe had burst, so she called a plumber, who made the repair the same

day. To Suzanne, that stellar level of customer service is simply living up to her philosophy to do anything and everything to make sure the customer is satisfied and is taken care of to the best of her ability.

Suzanne also gives back to her Jackson County community by serving in numerous civic and professional organizations. She believes that getting out into the community and really knowing and understanding the people who live and work there is rewarding for both her and for the community in general. She is happy to give of her time, talents, and expertise.

Suzanne is a member of many organizations, among them the Gautier-Vancleave Rotary Club, for whom served a term as president. She has also served on several committees for the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Association of Realtors and for the Gulf Coast Association of Realtors. She is a member of the Collective Church of Pascagoula.

Besides devoting her time to the profession of real estate, Suzanne loves to be around the water, to travel, and to spend time with her family.

Starr Chapman is managing partner of Rum Kitchen in Waveland, a hotspot known as a family-friendly restaurant that serves fresh produce, fresh seafood, and craft cocktails.

Besides handling the operations of a busy restaurant, Starr is a tireless crusader for the advancement of women. She has spearheaded many projects, including Winning the Vote, a celebration of 100 years of women’s right to vote; and Women, Wine & Wisdom, an intimate gathering that provides an opportunity to share concerns and ideas with state elected officials.

Starr is a graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican College, where she earned a B.A. in speech and drama. She moved to Waveland with her husband, John “Chappy” Chapman, in 1983. Together, they opened Chappy’s Seafood Restaurant in Long Beach, which remained a premier destination on the Mississippi Coast until Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

In 2016, Starr returned to Waveland and opened Rum Kitchen, which in 2018 was named Business of the Year by the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce.

Always seeking to help her community, in 2017, Starr created the Hemingway Festival, which celebrates the life of writer Ernest Hemingway while benefiting the Hurricane Waveland Ground Zero Museum.

Starr has given of her time, talents, and expertise to help the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, CASA, Boys and Girls Club Hancock County, the Magdalena House, A Taste of Hancock, and other organizations. She co-created Dancing with the Relay Stars for Hancock Relay for Life and Krewe of MAP, which is open to all Hancock County children. In addition, she created and hosted the inaugural Krewe of St. Clare Bash for her church. Starr was chosen to design and decorate the 100th Anniversary Dinner for St. Clare Church. In addition, Starr sits on the boards of the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, the Executive Board of the Hancock County Republican Women’s Club, the Hancock Republican Executive Club, and The Church Council of St. Clare. She is also an associate board member of the Hancock County Relay for Life.

Starr’s accolades include winning the 2019 Restaurant Neighbor Award for Mississippi from the National Restaurant Association. She advanced to the national level of this competition. She also was three times honored to be on the list of 100 Successful Women to Know; she was twice a Top Influencer at the Success Women’s Conference and was a 2021 Woman of Achievement finalist for Lighthouse Business and Professional Women. In 2020, she received the Jody Compretta Person of Passion Award, presented to someone who exemplifies what it means to be tenacious, determined, and always striving to advance Hancock County.

Shellene Barton

Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant!

The legacy that Home of Grace founders, Bill and Jean Barton, passed down through their family is one that has become prominent throughout the organization and surrounding communities. After 58 years, Home of Grace continues to be a stronghold for individuals suffering from addiction. This month, the organization is celebrating Women’s Director, Shellene Barton, as she retires in March 2023 after four decades of serving.

“My mom,” Josh Barton says, “began working at the Home of Grace alongside my dad, Billy, in 1979. She has worked in almost every position over the years, from writing newsletters to being the Associate Director of the Home of Grace.”

Shellene has faithfully served through floods, hurricanes, and through losing her husband to Dementia. No matter the storm, she has always risen to the occasion and put the clients first. Shellene looks forward to handing the torch to our new Women’s Director, Lena Crain, who will carry it even further—and to serving the Home of Grace in new ways.

“My heart is full as I witness the evidence of this legacy of faith within my three sons and eight grandchildren as they speak of the Home of Grace with such passion,” Shellene Barton said.

Shellene’s time at Home of Grace has left a deep footprint in her life from the many men and women she has worked with and those whose lives were transformed by the healing found in Christ Jesus.

“I am so privileged to have spent 44 years of my life serving in a ministry as remarkable as the Home of Grace,” Shellene said, “As I look toward this new season, I am reminded of Jeremiah 29:11, ‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ God is so faithful!”

Tyler Pav has been instrumental in expanding their custom design service with his amazing eye for style and attention to detail. Braydon Broome is taking the watch sector by storm from his Rolex-training and certification and his love for all things watches and timepieces.

Dr. Sarah Lee, director of the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Computing Sciences and Computer Engineering, recently received the (ISC)²’s Diversity Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of cybersecurity over the course of her career. The award is designated specifically for those whose work has advanced efforts to diversify the workforce in the cybersecurity community.

(ISC)² is an international nonprofit association for information security leaders with approximately 280,000 members. Dr. Lee is co-founder of The Last Mile Education Fund, which provides financial support for college computing and cybersecurity majors faced with challenges beyond their control.

“We have provided over $2.3 million in scholarships since 2020 through over 2,400 grants, and $1.5 million of that was invested in Black, LatinX, and indigenous women,” the honoree says.

USM ACCOUNTING PROFESSOR NAMED STATE’S TOP EDUCATOR

The Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accounting’s Awards, Education and Scholarship Committee has named Dr. Nell Adkins, associate professor of accounting at The University of Southern Mississippi, outstanding educator for 2023. Only one accounting educator in Mississippi receives this distinction annually.

Peers at USM nominated Adkins, who was honored at the MSCPA Accounting Education Conference in October. She will be further recognized at the MSCPA’s annual convention in June.

“I am very honored to be the recipient of this award,” Adkins says. “However, no one receives this award without the support and friendship of great colleagues like the ones I have here in the USM School of Accountancy. I thank them for their tireless work on behalf of our students.”

MARINE EDUCATION CENTER WINS 1ST SEASON OF SERIES

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Marine Education Center has won first place in the inaugural season of “America ByDesign: Architecture,” a magazine-style television series produced by CBS.

The program shines a spotlight on American architectural innovation, ingenuity and design excellence. The MEC emerged from 10 finalists to secure the coveted title by a unanimous vote. Situated on approximately 100 acres in Ocean Springs, the facility serves as the educational and outreach arm of USM’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, providing an immersion experience for participants in a unique, coastal setting. The education facility includes outdoor classrooms, laboratories, administration offices, assembly spaces, exhibition areas and a pedestrian suspension bridge where researchers have an unparalleled opportunity to learn about the ecologically critical bayou and tidal wetlands of Mississippi.

In May of this year, the American Institute of Architects recognized the MEC design team with one of its highly sought-after Honor Awards. Prior to that in 2020, AIA awarded the MEC one of its Committee on The Environment Top 10 awards. The MEC is the only building in Mississippi to ever receive this designation, which awards 10 outstanding projects each year based on design excellence with environmental performance.

MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM RECEIVES TOP AWARDS

When it comes to accolades, 2022 was a banner year for Memorial Health System.

Mompreneur Rita Green has a full plate, but she wouldn’t change a thing

As a busy wife, parent and entrepreneur, Rita Green has reached a startling conclusion: For moms, there’s no such thing as balance.

“You are a mom first and foremost; the children always take priority,” says Green, who has four kids ranging in age from 4 to 15. “That’s the job. I have good days and bad. I’m here having a human experience, and let me tell you, when the flesh is tired, it’s tired!”

Nonetheless, she wouldn’t trade any of her roles or obligations for the world. As the founder and chief visionary of Geaux Fig Co. and the co-founder and marketing maverick of Geaux Rabbit, she simply has lived by her own best advice: “Do what you can, and leave the rest for tomorrow.”

LIVING HER BEST LIFE

As difficult as it is to imagine today, Green was once a career-driven young adult who never thought she’d hold the title of “mother.” Her post-high school career dream was to become a forensic psychologist for the FBI.

“I was your modern-day gumshoe who loved a good mystery,” Green recalls. “However, sometimes your gifts take you in a different direction.”

She found that the hospitality industry was a natural fit for her personality and went on to work in fast-food establishments, restaurants, hotels and casinos.

“I learned early on in my hospitality career that people just wanted to be greeted with a smile and feel safe when you are in their presence,” Green says. “That is something that I have held with me throughout my life.”

Like many during the COVID-19 pandemic, she lost her livelihood, nest egg and benefits. Previously hesitant due to fear and self-doubt, Green indulged her entrepreneurial bent with a solo venture.

The name of her firm, Geaux Fig, is inspired by life’s “ah-ha” moments, when the solution to a problem appears and you find yourself exclaiming, “Go figure!”

“Good marketing is a form of hospitality, as you have to care about the audience you serve,” she says. “Technology is always evolving and is full of innovation, so the can’t-stand-doing-thesame-thing-twice nerd in me is fed on a consistent basis.

“Couple all of that with the science and psychology of marketing, and I am living my best life.”

NO TWO DAYS ARE THE SAME

The benefits of becoming her own boss have far outweighed any obstacles for Green. The biggest payoff, she says, is the ability to prioritize her family.

“I’ve had so much more time with my children, and more flexibility to escape from reality when needed by way of car, train or plane,” she explains. “I must be honest and say that there have been uncertainties, inconsistent income and

liabilities that become your own, but again, all worth the grind.”

That grind assumes different forms each day, but Green seems to take it all in stride. She is flattered to be considered a “mompreneur,” as the label affirms that moms can be bosses, too.

“I’ve cried over an email, shouted in a grocery store about a signed contract I had been waiting on for ages and packed up my whole family in 15 minutes on a whim to go to New Orleans for a ‘break’ all in one day,” she says. “I’ve spent long nights in the bathtub with a glass of wine, scrolling through TikTok just to unwind, while a tornado of children destroys whatever is left beyond the bathroom door. I’ve had 18hour days and three-day workweeks. The

most typical thing about each day is that you can bet it won’t be the same as the day before.”

With four active children at home, she quips, “you can imagine what my house is like.” Messes notwithstanding, the family she has created with her husband, Dwight, is clearly her pride and joy.

Fifteen-year-old Bryce idolizes Steven Spielberg and aspires to be an animator, voice actor, and film director. Her 14-yearold daughter, Brooke, loves cats, dance and the arts, according to her mom, while harboring a secret fascination for astronomy and how the world works.

Mason, Green’s 6-year-old son, is a natural athlete.

As parents, we want what’s best for our children, and establishing healthy eating habits is no exception. However, we also live in a fast-paced world, where we as parents we are balancing homework and after school-activities along with our own adult responsibilities. How can we help our kids make good food choices when we are always on the go? Here are some helpful tips.

REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU GRAB YOUR MEAL:

1. Watch portion sizes.

2. Just say no to the “happy plate.” In other words, don’t force your kids to eat all their food, or offer some reward for doing so. Let their bodies tell them that they are full. If your children are grazers or nibblers, leave the food within reach so they can eat as their bodies direct them.

3. Swap soda and/or juice for water. Have portable, sugarfree flavor enhancers to add to your child’s water if he or she doesn’t like drinking plain water.

4. Substitute French fries for a fruit, vegetable or dairy (like yogurt) alternative. This will lower caloric intake while being more nutritious.

5. Skip the cheese.

6. Go light on sauces like mayonnaise or ketchup that are high in sugar, salt and fat.

7. Model healthy eating for your kids. Whether you realize it or not, they are watching you. If you want to modify your children’s eating patterns, show them you’re willing to adjust, too.

While meal prepping and eating at home generally are the healthiest options, sometimes your schedule calls for quick and convenient fast-food options. Here are some ideas to help you make fast food options better for your family:

WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER:

We love our fried chicken in its various forms: tenders, nuggets and whole pieces. With so many fast-food places offering chicken, how do make it healthy(ish)?

• Kids menu options often are the best when it comes to not over-eating the fried food.

• If you have a choice to substitute fries for a vegetable or fruit option, do so. You also can nix the fries and order a la carte to make the meal healthier.

PIZZA NIGHT:

• Wherever you order from, thin crust will have fewer calories compared to hand tossed, pan or stuffed crust.

• Make it meatless and add vegetable toppings. This will add fiber and other nutrients that only veggies can provide.

HERE ARE SOME OTHER EXAMPLES OF HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVES FROM THE

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS:

• Chicken fajita instead of a breaded chicken sandwich

• Lean burger instead of an oversized special with lots of fat-laden trimmings

• Baked potato, fruit or salad with low-fat dressing or steamed vegetables instead of high-fat French fries

• Main-course salad from the salad bar with low-calorie dressing (skip the bacon bits and croutons)

• Nonfat frozen yogurt with a fresh fruit topping instead of an ice cream sundae or a large slice of pie

• Pizza with whole-grain crust topped with vegetables like tomato sauce, mushrooms, eggplant and peppers instead of high-fat toppings like sausage, pepperoni and extra cheese

• Low-fat milkshake or water instead of soda or a regular shake

THREE WAYS TO HELP KIDS COPE WITH A

We are living in some very stressful times. The day’s devastating events are overwhelming for adults, and it may be difficult to fully gauge how our children’s little minds are coping with these stressors.

As parents, we can’t ignore the realities of our world and the impact they have on our children. Our role is to help them feel safe and secure, and we must be intentional about our approach — not leaving anything to chance.

Studies have shown associations between toxic stress and changes in brain structure. Toxic stress weakens the developing brain’s architecture, leading to lifelong problems in learning, behavior and physical and mental health. When a child experiences toxic stress, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) hormone

axis is overactivated. This results in higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can result in long-term changes in inflammation and immunity.

We must support our children’s basic needs as we ease them into the reality of our world’s challenges. Although children may not fully understand today’s stressors, they are exposed to them daily. Here are three things you can do immediately to help your child overcome the impact of toxic stress.

1. SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S PHYSICAL NEEDS

Provide a well-balanced diet, encourage water consumption, regulate a strict sleeping schedule and promote regular exercise. You must help your children meet their basic physical needs, which is essential for keeping their bodies working correctly. Healthy habits can decrease stress, reduce disease risk and boost energy. Embrace healthy habits as a family by starting slow and making small but impactful changes.

2. PROVIDE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteering promotes gratitude, increases positivity and promotes contentment and feelings of fulfillment and relaxation by releasing dopamine. By serving others, volunteers report feeling a sense of meaning and appreciation, both given and received, which can have a stress-reducing effect.

A 2020 study conducted in the United Kingdom found those who volunteered reported being more satisfied with their lives and rated their overall health as better. Respondents who volunteered for at least one month also reported having better mental health than those who did not.

3. TEACH YOUR CHILD SPIRITUALITY

Spirituality involves a belief in something greater than yourself. Religion and spirituality are traditional coping methods, as they promote an internal locus of control and provide comfort in stressful situations. Religious and spiritual activities reframe stressful events in a way that helps someone deal with life stressors.

As parents, you should clarify your beliefs and not pretend to have all the answers. Introduce your children to meditation, mindfulness and relaxation techniques to help them focus and organize their thoughts. Encourage them to write their ideas in a journal to help them express their feelings.

And it’s one of the adorable features that earned 11-month-old Calese Stowe top prize in Gulf Coast Woman’s Cutest Baby Photo Contest for 2023.

The tot’s parents, who hail from Ocean Springs, entered her in the contest. All parents believe their child is the cutest, acknowledges Calese’s mom, Carissa Stowe, “and we definitely fall into that category.”

“Calese has a beautiful smile that brings joy to our hearts every time she smiles,” Stowe says. “We wanted to share her smile with everyone on the Coast.”

The proud mom added that she and the family are very excited about Calese’s win, for which she faced some stiff competition.

“All of the kids in the contest were adorable,” Stowe says, “and we appreciate everyone who voted!”

Medical practice puts patients on path to parenthood

Fertility is not simply a career specialty for Dr. J. Preston Parry and his team at Positive Steps Fertility; it’s a calling.

“We really love what we do …,” Parry says. “If we aren’t successful, some couples will forever return to an empty home, so we take what we do incredibly seriously — even if there is a lot of hope and humor along the way.”

While Parry describes himself and his team of nurse practitioners, embryologists and numerous other experts as datadriven nerds searching for the best outcomes, they have more to offer patients than their skillsets.

“I want them to know how much we care before they care how much we know,” he says. “I’m so fortunate to work with an amazing team, where we try to care for people like family rather than (treating

them as) a number—which is where so much of medicine has gone these days.

“We’re open-minded, where we give options, but we also are transparent enough to say what we’d do for our own spouse or children in similar circumstances. Finally, we’re fairly efficient, where we try to cut away the irrelevant and focus on that which gets people pregnant as quickly, but as affordably, as possible.”

That kind of passion led Parry to create, develop and patent the Parryscope, an approach that provides a breakthrough in female fertility testing. It is considered a more effective alternative to hysterosalpingography, or HSG testing.

Instead of using an X-ray to view inside the uterus, Parryscope involves placing a fiberoptic camera, approximately the width of a coffee straw, through the cervix and into the fallopian tubes. Parry then uses saline and air bubbles to determine if the fallopian tubes are open and whether the uterus is receptive to pregnancy. If the bubbles cannot pass through the tube, Parry says, neither can sperm. The entire in-office process takes about five minutes and draws patients from across the South and as far afield as California and New York.

“It’s a gentle, accurate and affordable approach to single-visit fertility testing,” he says. “It combines ultrasound with office hysteroscopy for the gold-standard assessment of egg reserve, the gold standard for uterine evaluation, and it comes close to gold-standard testing for whether the fallopian tubes are open — but without the incisions, pain, anesthesia and cost associated with laparoscopy.”

Stylish or kid-friendly? Your home can be both

Families with young children frequently have the mindset that “less is more” in their home, sacrificing their personal style. However, having children doesn’t mean a magazine-worthy home is out of your reach.

Follow these guidelines to create child-friendly homes that are safe and chic.

OPEN FLOOR PLAN

Consider having an open floor plan dining area and family room. Along with creating an open, airy feel, this layout is conducive to keeping an eye on the kiddos and spending quality time with your family.

WOOD FLOORING OR CARPET

Wood flooring is preferable to tile for several reasons. The objective is to make the spaces rounded, seamless, and devoid of edges. You can create a feeling of warmth and coziness by installing rugs or carpet. Consider rugs with darker hues and patterns, as these will conceal stains. Another useful tip is to

make use of outdoor rugs and carpets, as they are much more durable.

WALLS

Consider painting the walls with washable paint (sticky hands!), and give the little ones a “freedom wall” so they can express their creativity. Chalkboard paint is a wonderful option for a freedom wall or any space where you want to allow the children free reign.

It’s also a nice touch to have your children’s artwork framed and displayed with pride in your home. This use of their masterpieces will inspire your budding artist and lend the room a charming, contemporary look.

FURNITURE

Washable materials are one of the most essential elements of childfriendly interior design. Performance fabric upholstery is an easy-to-clean and long-lasting material crafted from a blend of synthetic and natural fibers. The term originated in the furniture industry to label fabrics that withstand the wear and tear of everyday life.

Another excellent choice is leather, which is easy to clean. Alternatively, you might invest in outdoor fabrics that are resistant to fading and longlasting. Throw pillows, especially

those with vibrant colors and patterns, are a terrific way to liven up a room and are easy and inexpensive to replace if they are damaged.

Think about getting round coffee tables, which will protect your children from bumps and bruises when they are running around and playing. Storage inside or underneath is a huge bonus.

Another good idea is investing in stackable furniture, particularly if you have a smaller home with limited space. This will free up room for playing without compromising seating.

A wooden dining room table without sharp edges is also a great option for a kid-friendly interior due to its versatility and durability.

PLAYROOM

Design a playroom that is both comfortable and entertaining. Display your children’s books like an art gallery. Create a fun and organizational way for them to store their toys. Teaching them to keep a tidy, organized toy area at a young age will help in many ways. Not only does organization have proven health benefits, but it reduces stress and increases happiness and relaxation.

It is important to maintain a balance when designing rooms for children, choosing the minor details that cater to their preferences while

still incorporating timeless pieces that can be passed down through generations.

“ADULT-ONLY” ROOM

Establish an adult-only, toy-free zone. It may take the form of a den or an office, and you also can create “zones” in a large room through floor coverings and furniture placement.

Other things to consider for kid-friendly interiors:

• Anchor drawers and shelves to the wall to prevent them from tipping over.

• Hide wires and cables from the reach of children by encasing them.

• Use socket protectors or guards in exposed sockets.

• Add window latches and locks for any low-lying windows that are within easy reach of children.

• Consider installing a baby gate at the top of the stairs or in the kitchen to prevent children from entering potentially dangerous areas when they are left unattended.

xperiencing other cultures when you live in Europe is not difficult because there are so many other countries close by. I have grown up traveling, even to Africa, but I always have dreamed of going farther, which made studying abroad an easy decision.

However, the idea of studying abroad now came from a place of pain. I lost my mother when I was 6, and my father passed away last year. I thought a change could give me a chance to escape the constant reminders of what I had lost and give me a place to heal. I am thankful that I had a wonderful foster family in Germany around me who made my exchange happen, and I feel blessed to have had them supporting me despite being thousands of miles away.

Choosing the United States for my study abroad was a no-brainer because everyone wants to experience the American life they see in the movies. After being here for almost four months, I can say that many things that aren’t what I expected, and yet many are. My friends from home love hearing stories from my high school, and I say my high school because I feel like I am truly a part of this community.

Being a stranger in a strange land, it is always nice to find something familiar. I have taken French since elementary school, so I knew it would be a class where I wouldn’t feel completely lost. It is by far the most exciting part of my day. I have become close with my classmates and my French teacher because they are obviously interested in learning about other cultures, and I love sharing mine with them.

Doing a year abroad is not just studying in another country, but also living with a host family who make cultural habits a part of everyday life. The U.S. always has been a large and diverse travel destination that you can’t fully experience with a simple vacation. This was one reason I decided to have a whole year of adventures and experiences here.

Many Americans wonder how I speak English so fluently despite coming from a country where a completely different language is spoken.

The answer is that I grew up speaking and learning English and have been learning it at school since the third grade. I'm here to expand my knowledge and get to know the language as used by native speakers.

In my time here, I’ve found that the U.S. is full of life, as well as different cultures, languages and beautiful cities — but above all, people. I was welcomed openly and warmly by everyone I have met so far.

Through basketball and volleyball, two sports I had never played before, I met great and lovely people who helped me make friends. This not only has made me feel welcomed, but I also count these activities among my favorites here so far, and I enjoy practice every day. Additionally, experiencing New York City at the beginning of my exchange was a highlight for me, since it’s the city everyone wants to visit one day. What made it special for me was seeing people from all over the world in one place.

To others who are considering studying in the U.S., I would say keep an open mind. Everyone hears about New York and L.A. and other well-known cities, so they may be reluctant to travel to a less well-known place like Gulfport. I know other students who are studying in larger cities, and they are not having the same experience. The hospitality I have been shown is something I will never forget.

That warm welcome makes me feel so good that I hardly want to leave. I am grateful for each of the incredible people I have met, who have ensured that I hardly had time to get homesick.

I haven’t had one day yet when I’ve regretted my decision. I'm here for a reason, and I realize every day that I am in the right place.

Stop to smell (and prune) the roses

Valentine’s Day means flowers, candy and, of course, roses. By pruning established roses around mid-February, Coast gardeners can help ensure frost will not damage new growth. Plants will start blooming in six to eight weeks. Reduce rose bushes by one third, cutting out dead wood, crossing branches or diseased canes. Clean out debris from bud union with a metal brush.

New canes may have emerged close to another healthy cane you wish to keep. Sometimes you can save both by inserting a piece of waste cane between the two, allowing both to develop.

After pruning, remove all the leaves still clinging to the canes, as well as shed leaves laying under the bush. This will ensure a clean, disease-free bush. Then, apply a dormant spray to eliminate any fungal spores that may be over-wintering in the soil or mulch. The dormant spray should include a fungicide and/or a copper-based product to combat diseases such as rose canker.

HERE ARE SOME OTHER ITEMS FOR YOUR FEBRUARY GARDENING TO-DO LIST:

• Start seeds indoors, following packet directions and timing. Seeds sprout best at 70 degrees; but plants don’t need it that warm.

• Continue to provide feed, water and cover for birds visiting your garden. Squirrels don’t like safflower seed; you might try it in your feeders.

• Assess your winter landscape, noting gaps to fill with shrubs or trees.

• Order plants by mail. Most companies will ship at an

appropriate time for your zone.

• Prepare flower and vegetable beds and rejuvenate old ones by adding organic matter and fertilizer. Turn under the top six inches of soil.

• Water evergreen plants thoroughly when a sudden freeze is predicted. If weather has been dry, water all plants and lawns.

• A 2-to-3-inch layer of mulch should be maintained over root systems of trees and shrubs to retain moisture and reduce weeds. In a bed you wish to encourage reseeding of last year’s annuals, leave only an inch of mulch.

• Now is the time to plant or move shrubs and trees while they are dormant. This will allow newly transplanted shrubs and trees to overcome transplant shock and start establishing roots before the plants must put out leaves.

• If you haven’t already, take a soil sample and have it analyzed for amendments.

• Toward the end of February, fertilize camellias, fruit trees, shrubs, vines and ground covers. Pecan trees need a fertilizer containing zinc.

• Gladioli planted every two weeks will extend blooming for three months.

PRIORITIZE GOOD SLEEP

We all know that getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to functioning and feeling our best, but there is so much more that our brains and bodies undergo during sleep that is essential for good health. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Inadequate sleep is associated with many chronic diseases, inflammation and altered immune function.

DECREASED SLEEP IS LINKED TO WEIGHT GAIN

Poor sleep is strongly linked to weight gain. When you do not get enough sleep, your body produces a hormone, ghrelin, that boosts appetite while decreasing the production of another, leptin, a hormone that tells you that you are full. Lack of sleep will lead you to eat more than you should and gain weight.

POOR SLEEPERS HAVE A GREATER RISK OF HEART ATTACK AND STROKE

Blood pressure and heart rate decrease during sleep, giving your heart and blood vessels a chance to recover. Lack of sleep increases the risk of both cardiovascular disease and stroke.

SLEEP AFFECTS DIABETES RISK

Sleep can also affect glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes risk. Diabetes increases your risk of many diseases like heart disease, kidney disease and cancer.

SLEEP IMPROVES IMMUNE FUNCTION

When you sleep, your body makes cytokines, or proteins that fight infection, and produces antibodies and other immune cells. Just small losses in sleep — seven versus eight hours, for instance — have been shown to impair immune function and increase infection risk.

POOR SLEEP IS LINKED TO INFLAMMATION

Sleep deprivation is associated with inflammation, which in turn is linked to many chronic medical conditions like heart disease, autoimmune disease and cancer.

While you sleep, your body is doing a lot of work that is vital for good health. If you do not wake refreshed, feel fatigued during the day or have trouble falling or staying asleep, talk to your doctor. Make good sleep a priority!

TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP

Many factors can interfere with getting a good night’s sleep, so here are some tips to encourage better sleep.

• Stick to a sleep schedule. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends. This will reinforce your body’s sleep-wake cycle.

• Avoid heavy or large meals, nicotine, caffeine and alcohol within a couple of hours of bedtime. Although alcohol can make you feel sleepy at first, it can disrupt your sleep later in the night.

• Limit daytime naps to no more than 20 minutes.

• Get daily physical activity, but avoid exercising too close to bedtime. More activity is better, but even a 10-minute brisk walk can help.

• Expose yourself to sunlight in the early morning. For instance, you could drink your morning coffee on the porch or near a window. This will help set your circadian rhythm.

WOMEN ARE ALMOST TWICE AS LIKELY AS MEN TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH DEPRESSION

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although the physical symptoms usually are the first thing people think of, emotional factors associated with the disease also can be harmful.

The mind and heart may be more closely related than you think – especially for women. February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to explore the link between the heart and mental health.

People who experience long-term mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, stress or PTSD may have physical reactions like increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to conditions like heart disease over time.

The opposite is also true. Mental health challenges can develop after health scares, like heart failure, stroke and heart attack. These conditions can be brought on from pain, fear of death or disability and financial insecurity.

Women are almost twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression, and according to a study from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, middle-aged women who have clinical depression are at twice the risk of developing heart disease than those without depression.

Depression and heart disease can manifest in symptoms like fatigue, low energy and difficulty sleeping. Although they’re different, some prevention methods like healthy lifestyle changes can help lower the risk of developing both conditions.

Addressing mental health conditions early can promote long-term mental and physical wellness.

TIPS TO REDUCE RISK

Here are a few simple ways to reduce your risk:

• Mind and body care. Practices like yoga, meditation and deep breathing exercises are great stress relievers and help manage feelings that can cause depression. Explore cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac rehabilitation often is recommended to people who’ve had a heart attack. It includes education about ways to live healthier, like finding the right diet and exercise routine. It also includes counseling to improve mental health and manage stress.

• Reach out. When people experience feelings of sadness or isolation while recovering from heart problems, reaching out for support can make navigating these issues easier.

• Get screened for depression. Depression often is brushed off as a period of sadness, but its symptoms actually are quite debilitating. Feelings of hopelessness, trouble concentrating or low energy may be cause for concern. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, reach out to a doctor to learn more about screening options and other resources.

Mental, physical wellness starts with Self-love

I don’t know about you, but it took me some time to find a lot of love for myself in my earlier years.

The lack of self-love in the past may have stemmed from years of being teased in grade school, middle school and high school. I’m sure most of us have experienced some type of teasing in our younger years, or even into adulthood. It can leave you with emotional scars that last a lifetime. I’m confident that we would all love to go back and tell our little-girl selves that there is absolutely nothing wrong with us and that we were created to be beautiful and unique.

After years of intentionally practicing self-love and self-care, I learned how to truly invest in myself, and I’d like to share some tools to help you feel more selflove and self-respect this year. Taking the time to truly invest in self-love and self-care is a non-negotiable for me, and I hope it becomes one for you, too. Love shouldn’t only come from others around us. First and foremost, it should come from within. Accept yourself, love yourself and keep moving forward.

My definition of self-love is how you quiet your mind and reflect on your inner beauty. These are the tools that have helped me practice selflove:

‘There’s never a dull moment’

PATIENTS FIND RELIEF FROM LEG WOES AT VEIN INSTITUTE

Thompson has more than 18 years’ experience as a surgeon and always dreamed of one day starting his own practice. That dream came true in May when he opened the Vein Institute of South Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

A broken heart can lead to the emergency room

There are countless ways to soothe a broken heart, but when overwhelming sadness or stress is too much to take, it may lead to a serious condition for your heart. Broken heart syndrome, also known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy or Takotsubo syndrome, appears to be on the rise among middle-aged and older women, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This condition is characterized by sudden heart failure.

Memorial Health System Cardiologist Dr. Umair Malik, who is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, says, “Symptoms of broken heart syndrome could vary, but classically are known to mimic the presentation of a heart attack, commonly presenting with chest pain, and at times with shortness of breath, palpitations, lightheadedness or passing out. Typically, the onset of symptoms is preceded by significant emotional or physical stress.”

Stress releases certain chemicals from the nervous system, and in high quantities, they can have a negative effect on the heart muscle’s ability to contract.

“Broken heart syndrome is distinguished from a heart attack by the absence of any blockages in the blood vessels feeding the heart muscle,” Dr. Malik says. He continues, “Most patients with broken heart syndrome are

postmenopausal women.”

Most patients with broken heart syndrome recover, but a substantial proportion could experience complications such as shock, respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation or even death.

“Overall studies have reported a less than 5 percent rate of death from the condition during hospitalization,” Dr. Malik says. “In a vast majority of patients, with appropriate treatment, the pumping function of the heart returns to normal within a few weeks.”

Once someone is diagnosed with broken heart syndrome, treatment mainly includes medication. In a small number of patients with complications such as shock or respiratory failure, the use of mechanical support devices may be necessary. It’s also important to manage stress and keep blood pressure and heart rate well-controlled so the heart doesn’t have to work as hard.

According to Melissa Logos, certified mastectomy fitter and owner of Foundations Bra Fitting, 90 percent of ladies wear the incorrect bra size – a struggle that affects everything from their self-esteem and comfort to their posture and how their clothes hang. The purpose of her business, which has a Gulfport location and a new store in Spanish Fort, Alabama, is to give customers of all shapes and sizes a customized fitting experience.

With a range of over 180 bra sizes available, Foundations takes a customer’s size, breast tissue, and shape into account when finding her perfect bra.

“Many times, ladies come in unsure and uncomfortable; once they have the correct size, we see big smiles, laughs and even tears,” Logos says. “For the lady who is a breast cancer survivor, we restore her confidence. For the young pre-teens embarrassed of their size, we let them know how beautiful and perfect they are.”

As a mother of four daughters, including one who was active in sports, Logos once had to travel often to find supportive undergarments. She contemplated starting her own business, and Foundations opened in October of 2014. The first challenge came early in 2015, when one of

her daughters was diagnosed with leukemia.

“Instead of closing the doors, we worked by appointment only,” Logos says. “We are thankful for the many family and friends who helped keep our doors open.”

Valentine’s Day has become so big that it has spawned a spinoff known as Galantine’s Day — a fun opportunity to celebrate and spend time with female friends. You can have a girls’ night out downtown or gather at someone’s house. Break out the bling, get dressed up in the ensemble that makes you feel your most beautiful and top it off with a slick of your favorite pink lipstick. Play with color

If you’re anything like me, you’re looking in your closet and asking yourself why you have so much clothing that doesn’t represent who you are in this stage of life. We’ve all been there. Finding and elevating your personal style can be hard at times.

The best thing you can do is research the trends and see which ones fit who you are right now. Some trends you won’t understand until you try them — and some will be a definite “no.” Don’t be discouraged; that’s completely normal.

Delving into the color trends for the new year is my first step toward reviving my closet. It’s always fun to research color trends because I’m always surprised. A good place to start is with the color of the year from the Pantone Color Institute recognized worldwide as a leading source of color expertise.

For 2023, the color of the year is viva magenta — which is described as “a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength.” Although we’ve seen this color in some form or fashion over the previous year, I’m excited to see this vibrant hue in more clothing.

Other sources like WGSN & Coloro say to look out for colors like digital lavender, sundial, tranquil blue, luscious red and verdigris. One designer that’s already incorporating some of those shades into its pieces is Lapointe, which has always delivered when it comes to color, fashion and style. All these of-the-moment hues are very moody and grab your attention in all the right ways, so keep an eye out for them while shopping. Fresh colors may be your key to transitioning and finding more pieces that feel like you. Nestled within the Silver Slipper Casino in Bay St. Louis, the Blue Bayou Bar and Grill provides an intimate, elegant experience combined with classic comfort.

Upon entering, guests are greeted by the low lights and cool decor of the Blue Bayou Bar, an atmosphere that is at once refined and chic. Patrons may sit at the bar while still enjoying the full kitchen menu, which makes it an ideal place to watch the latest sporting event or dine in a more casual environment.

Adjacent to the bar, the restaurant caters to romantic nights out, dinner parties with friends and everything in between. Its high ceilings, contemporary light fixtures and view of the kitchen suggest an air of trendy modernity while the elegant white tablecloths, adorned with dark blue napkins and the soft light of a single candle, create

an intimate feel.

Blue Bayou’s food, imagined and prepared by Chef David Gooch, exemplifies the essence of fusion cuisine. Gooch said that his vision is to expand palettes beyond the basic “steak-and-potato” options.

“I hope to get people to trust me and to help them try new things, like fusion foods,” he says.

While dining at Blue Bayou, my husband and I experienced several of Gooch’s dishes, each crafted and presented with utmost care and precision. First, we tried appetizers, including a smoked salmon artichoke dip garnished with capers; a chipotle pork belly topped with salsa verde, black bean puree, and pepper jelly coleslaw; and a Tuscan tenderloin meatball made of ground filet mignon and served over cheesy bread surrounded by diablo sauce.

Each time our server brought a new

sampling, we thought it could not possibly be better than the last, but somehow, each dish lent its own mouthwatering quality to the table. While all the appetizers were delicious, my husband and I agreed that we never have tasted such an amazing meatball and likely never will again.

The soup and salad course consisted of chicken chili and a grilled head of romaine salad. While I do not typically enjoy spicy food, the chicken chili won me over by bringing enough heat to make itself known, which faded before the next bite. The salad, topped with candied pecans and bleu cheese, was both delicious and visually stunning.

We shared samples of three different entrees, showcasing Blue Bayou’s land,

sea and regional offerings. The Blackened filet with a cherry demi glacé served with Tuscan spinach, and a blue cheese topping was the most tender, delectable filet I’ve ever tasted and my husband’s favorite menu item of the night. My personal favorite was the Chilean sea bass served over whipped mashed potatoes with a mushroom port demi glacé.

The flavor of the sea bass blended perfectly with the sides, and I could have happily stopped there. However, Chef Gooch insisted we try one final entree, unique for its fusion of regional and exotic characteristics. As our server placed the Southern-fried chicken coq au vin on our table, Gooch told us, “Everyone has fried chicken, but this is something special.”

We finished our evening with the night’s dessert: a brownie waffle with strawberry cream cheese and vanilla bean ice cream. Gooch explained that Blue Bayou offers a new dessert each night with its “Edge” happy hour menu, which is available from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday- Saturday. Regular hours are Wednesday and Thursday 5-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5-10 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for brunch only.

Blue Bayou’s atmosphere, service and food allow guests to experience the exquisite tastes of fine dining while enjoying a relaxing and comfortable environment, which has skyrocketed this coastal gem to the top of my list for evenings out.

DECADENT DELIGHT:

White chocolate bread pudding

with white chocolate sauce

INGREDIENTS:

It’s the season for all things decadent! Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras are upon us, and this bread pudding is sure to be a hit for either occasion. I love bread pudding because it is surprisingly easy to make. Whether your plans involve a date night in or a festive evening out; this sweet treat is the perfect Southern dessert to enhance your celebration.

• 7 ounces French bread, torn into small cubes

2 cups heavy cream

• 2 cups milk

• 2 cups white chocolate (13oz bag)

4 eggs

• 1/2 cup sugar

• 2 teaspoon vanilla

• ¼ teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon butter for greasing your pan

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat the heavy cream in a pot with one cup of milk.

2. Pour in the white chocolate chips and turn off heat; let it sit and melt.

3. In a bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, vanilla and salt.

4. Once the milk and white chocolate mixture has cooled somewhat, add the cold cup of milk.

5. Slowly add this mixture

to the egg mixture while whisking (Note: adding this too fast will scramble your eggs — not good.)

6. Once all milk mixture is added, add your torn-up French bread to the bowl and let it soak for about 15-20 minutes.

7. Butter the pan you will bake in, and pour in the bread mixture.

8. Bake for about 60-70 minutes at 350 degrees.

WHITE CHOCOLATE SAUCE

INGREDIENTS:

• 6 ounces white chocolate

1 1/2 cups heavy cream

DIRECTIONS:

1. Bring the heavy cream to a boil, and turn the heat off.

2. Pour in white chocolate and allow it to melt.

It will look runny, but that is OK. When the bread pudding comes out of the oven, let it sit for a minute so it will “deflate.” Then, you can pour as much as you want on top. You may not want to pour the entire mixture; I usually do not. I refrigerate the remaining sauce for drizzling on top later or save another use.

Sandra Pelas, president of the Women’s Club of Gulfport, tells us about the organization and how it serves the community.

WHAT IS THE WOMEN’S CLUB OF GULFPORT’S PURPOSE AND MISSION?

The Women’s Club of Gulfport is a nonprofit volunteer service organization founded in 1915 that is dedicated to improving our community by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer commitment. We actively support women’s achievements, literacy for all and support for victims of sexual and domestic abuse while encouraging protection of our environment and healthy life practices for everyone.

HOW AND WHY DID THE CLUB COME ABOUT?

Members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs - Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs actively participate in one of the world’s largest and oldest women’s volunteer service organizations. Membership includes clubs in all 50 states and a dozen other countries.

In 1898, Mrs. Fannie Coleman of Kosciusko, Mississippi, led a group of statewide members in collaboration to form the MFWC. This decision allowed the clubs to unite, improving focus and resources for education by establishing scholarships, assembling books for traveling libraries to rural schools

and purchasing art to form a traveling educational exhibit. Our local club joined the MFWC in 1917.

The MFWC has made many improvements in our state. Notably, we are responsible for 75 percent of the state’s public libraries and helping to establish Mississippi Educational Television.

WHAT IS NEW AND EXCITING WITH THE CLUB?

We recently moved into our new clubhouse at 400 Security Square, Gulfport. Will Rich, a generous benefactor, donated our previous location that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Proceeds from his donation allowed us to purchase the new location, providing workspace for activities and projects.

Each club president selects a special project for her administration. We are now partnering with Four Paws Rescue to raise funds for and increase awareness of abused and neglected animal needs. We are encouraging participation in the Purina Purple Leash program, an initiative that supports animal groups donating funds when designated Purina items are purchased.

WHAT IMPACT DOES THE CLUB MAKE ON THE COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE IT SERVES? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT INITIATIVES?

In 2021, our 33 members contributed 8,785 volunteer hours, donated $8,792 in

cash funds and $15,299 in in-kind value to various charitable projects.

Examples of our outreach activities include:

• Acquiring Gulfport Fire Department Rehab Truck supplies and providing funds for Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday staff

• Maintaining the gardens at the downtown and Orange Grove libraries and observing Library and Teacher Appreciation weeks with snacks

• Providing clothing and personal care donations to local schools

• Donating pajamas, socks and hygiene items to Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence victims and providing Santa gifts for senior citizens

• Providing treats to the Gulfport Police during Memorial Recognition Week

WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST THING YOU HAVE LEARNED OR GAINED BY BEING INVOLVED IN THIS CLUB?

The interaction with these community entities opens a window of understanding to the needs of children, the elderly and first responders, as well as the devastating living situations around us. Our state club motto is, “Enjoy living the volunteer life.”

My association with this club has given me the opportunity to help others in need while developing friendships with likeminded, talented women. Everyone can do something to help others.

How deep is your

love?

Some of us used to play “He loves me, he loves me not” in elementary school. We believed this game of French origin was a way to determine whether someone we liked returned our affection. We alternately would say the phrases, “He loves me, He loves me not,” while plucking petals off of a flower. Whichever phrase corresponded to the removal of the last petal supposedly represented the truth of our crush’s feelings.

I am so thankful this game is not a true measure of real love. 1 John 3:18 says, “My dear children, let us not just talk about love; let us practice real love in actions and in truth.”

We know from scripture that Christ’s love for His people is deep, unfailing and eternal, and we are to show this same love to each other.

John 13:34 states, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you.” John also tells us that showing love is not merely talking about it, but demonstrating it out in our deeds. Love is a commandment from God and a characteristic of a child of God.

So how deep is your love? I love this quote by New Testament scholar Clarence Jordan: “The measure of a Christian is not in the height of his grasp, but in the depth of his love.” We need to realize the depth of love Christ has for us. God dwells deep and wide within us, and his love becomes complete in us — His perfect love.

Our love is imperfect, fragile and flawed, yet God loves us deeply and unconditionally. God works through us despite our weaknesses. Our capacity to love often extends beyond human limitations and understanding. As we allow God to work through us, we can give our all — love, share, sacrifice and stand for truth.

We are God’s handiwork, and the ability to love is part of what it means to be created in God’s image. Real love is deeply rooted and grounded in Him. God’s love never fails; it is infinite — a well that never runs dry.

So, how deep is your love? If you are drawing from the reservoir of God’s love in you, it is endless. Let us give freely and live a life punctuated by love.
