PREFACE

"Design is where science and art break even" - Robin Mathew

Now that the dust of the decade-long hype of Parametric design seems to be settling, and the presence of ‘parameters’ in contemporary architectural discourse verges on the cliché, the advent of Artificial Intelligence permeating into the field of architecture is an incredible turn of events. The thesis as a whole debuts new advances of generative design that enable architects to program aesthetic interpretations sustaining through computer-mediated adaptive architecture transforming the two-dimensional architectural drawings into algorithm-driven intelligent models based on user input.

This research project explores design methods and workflows that break the linearity of the traditional design process, while still accommodating the flexible and ambiguous nature of creative exploration. The explorative approach is subjected to the history of architecture and is expanded into information-rich process, where performative goals are considered alongside aesthetic aims -- the study of spatial features generated by AI models, transfiguration of pixels in lieu of walls, subtractive excavation between mass and void, the logic within conflict -- disorganization and regeneration within design constraints.

Owing to the significant changes brought by computer-aided design tools and pursuits in AI’s great influence on architectural design we can raise questions on how we perceive architecture:

• Are we moving away from Art History to AI-driven designs?

• What are the accepted rules of AI based architectural design?

• What kind of aesthetics does AI derive?

• Is AI transforming the way we experience architecture?

• Is interaction with AI taking us towards new architectural design?

Research & Training

Neural Networks were trained with a dataset of Baroque Architecture generating homeomorphic floor plans that were then transformed into algorithm-driven intelligent 3-Dimensional models.

For this project, the explorative approach is subjected to the history of architecture and is expanded into an information-rich process, where

performative goals are considered alongside aesthetic aims. The research here consists of temples with intricate design details, castles with thick poche, churches and monuments.

As a designer, my role is to examine and investigate whether the AI-generated models can be transmuted into functional architectural spaces.

AI-GENERATED FOOTPRINTS

ALGORITHM DRIVEN USER INPUT + AI-generated Colosseum floorplan

& Observation Investigation

The trained dataset generated outputs that formed a relationship with the thickness of poche.

- Depending on the richness of pixels the forms created a relationship between walls extruded from them.

The results show spatial features generated by AI models through transfiguration of pixels in lieu of

walls, creating subtractive excavations between mass and void having the logic within conflict -- disorganization and regeneration of structures with continued design constraints.

It can also be said that the walls act as a graphic material datum that grows into a monolithic structure. The study models here show the cavity produced during cohesion of pixels with varied data inputs.

3-D MODEL RESULTS

Typology

I worked with Casino typology.

The chaos, confusion, mismatch, disorganization and regeneration of space in this model contributed more to the psychology of a Casino where architecturally spaces are designed to make guests stay longer and gamble more.

The program covers Penthouses as a specialty for guests who visit often making its way to the amenities like Urban forest and recreational spaces at the top sharing daylight with events held at the Promenade underneath. In addition to the regular program of a Casino with tables games, hospitality, shopping malls, the convention center comes with Chapel and Banquet Hall, Film Studio, Vintage Museum and Auction Center.

GROUND FLOORPLAN -

The program revolves around the Urban forest giving an experience of the first modern man walking in a jungle and making his way to the labyrinth of walls.

The Ground Floor plan is mainly divided into Casino Space, Dine outs and Retail Showrooms along with hospitality services.

The dining area serves as a banquet hall near the Promenade segregated by a continuous wall that divides Cafe lounges, Restaurants and Service area, which then further continues to the Retail Showrooms on the right. The continuous wall forms display and exhibit areas allowing the guests to walk around eliminating the need of glass showrooms and instead promotes sales.

The Casino Space comprises of open areas for table games and Slot machines with a provision for pre booked private gaming rooms and bar.

TOP FLOORPLAN -

The Penthouse found in midst of the Urban jungle revolves around the bathing areas showcased as a lifestyle luxury - the experience of a wealthy Primitive man indeed. The pixelated wall extrusions liberate the architecture from the conventional wall systems and parameterized undulations; creating functional spaces with customizable niches and platforms enabling the optimal use of the architecture.

The placement of Recreational zone right above the Promenade shares the daylight dissolving the experience of the Casino altogether rejuvenating their guests.

The everchanging vibrant colors and undecipherable interior/exterior labyrinth of pixels captivates attention at the Vegas strip. The effects can be produced by illuminating Corian as the construction material. It reminds me the works of James Turrell casting a perfect place for a film studio. The multifaceted fractals liberate the

architecture from one particular program allowing itself to generate multi functional areas. The labyrinth-like structure which makes it even more interesting to decipher when the exterior ends and interior begins. The complexity of the model is a blessing in disguise enabling people to find spots that suits them.

Mixed-Use Building Construction Documents

The course focused on advanced methods of project delivery and construction documents incorporating digital technologies and investigating new models for linking design and construction processes. It introduced Building Information Modeling as one of the tools for realignment of the traditional relationships between the project stakeholders. Using a single unit residential building located in Los Angles, students analyzed and developed the archi-

tecture by creating a detailed 3D digital model and a set of 2D construction documents specifically tailored for the design challenges of a single unit residential project.

Lectures and site visits to fabricators and construction sites further informed students of technical documentation methods for projects that are operating on the forefront of design and construction.

In architecture practice today, performance and constructability are two of the most important factors in the design and delivery of a project. The creation and use of parametric geometry to create intelligent digital models that integrate and respond to specified sets of performance criteria, offers a more holistic approach to design and its relationship to built form. Using immersive technologies like VR as an integrated tool of design and review also allows architects to anticipate and accommodate issues of collaboration, fabrication and installation globally, throughout the

various phases of design.

This course aims at giving students computational tools to facilitate the practical implementation of performance goals in everyday practice and allows them to seamlessly integrate immersive technology and parametric intelligence into their current and more intuitive design processes. Using CATIA 3dexperience platform, students are working with the most powerful and advanced parametric tools in the industry.

Terraforming of Mars is a hypothetical process of planetary engineering by which the surface and climate of Mars would be deliberately changed to make large areas of the environment hospitable to humans, thus making the colonization of Mars safer and sustainable.

Mars requires less energy per unit mass (delta-v) to reach from Earth than any planet, other than Venus. Research carried out at Louisiana State University found different types of volcanic materials around volcanoes in Elysium Mons. This showed that Mars can have a magma evolution. This leads to the possibility of finding useful minerals for a future human population on Mars.

After the mass of magma has cooled and has mostly frozen or crystallized into a solid, a small amount of liquid rock remains. This liquid bears important substances such as lead, silver, tin, bismuth, and antimony.

Diamagnets may be levitated in stable equilibrium in a magnetic field, with no power consumption. Diamagnetic materials are repelled by a magnetic field; an applied magnetic field creates an induced magnetic field in them in the opposite direction, causing a repulsive force.

• Bismuth is the diamagnetic material found in the magma of Mars.

• Surface gravity of Mars is 38% that of Earth.

The Molecule Lab

On Mars, the boundary between indoors and outdoors can signify life and death. The creation of spacesuits or Mars-suits is, in this context, crucial to face the outdoor challenges while protecting the human body. The habitats that are designed for this extreme environment become the “suit” for indoor activities; a living vessel that can sustain the long-term needs of the inhabitants. Designing a closed loop system for a habitat on Mars can begin with how the food supply system works in full circle. As Adele Peters of FastCompany said “Shipping food to Mars could cost nearly $1 billion per person per

year–so if people want to live there, growing food on the planet is a necessary step.”

This is one of the many reasons Mars City Design® wanted to take this necessary step by creating the URBAN FARMING for EXTREME ENVIRONMENT competition . This contest is open to the public, teams and individuals can submit their designs of a food supply system that can produce a variety of menus for a crew of 9 people living for 2 years on Mars. The winning designs are then subject to be developed and built in the California desert!

Astir University is the project designed for Mexico City University having Graduate and Undergraduate programs using the precedent study sites IIT Campus by Mies Van Der Rohe as a section plan and Palacio de Los Deportes for optical illusionary façade.

It is a research proposal exploring a new spectrum of Kinetic Architecture when merged with Quantum Mechanics.

The project is a combination of still and levitating building parts that can be moved and shifted in any direction to create functional spaces between them. The diamagnetic material such as Bismuth is used to stabilize ‘Tensegrity’ (floating-compression induced by vector fields of magnetic components) and foster substantial levitation for the cloudinspired moment.
