ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you will make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

Countryside or city? Home or abroad? Deciding a location means that you will know where to start looking.

If you’re planning a civil ceremony then check whether the venue holds the appropriate license.

Who’s on your guest list? There’s no point considering a venue which cannot accommodate all your guests!

If you are looking to hire independent caterers then this is something that should be checked with your prospective venue, as you may be obliged to use in-house caterers.

Many venues offer exclusive use. There may be an additional charge or a minimum number of bedrooms you need to book.

If you’re planning to “party all night”, then make sure you ask the venue what time they can keep the bar open and music playing.

Does the venue offer a coordinator to assist you with planning, or to help on the day?

If you’re keen to add your personal touch to the decor then remember to ask your venue what they include. You can then plan any additional extras.

Many guests will be keen to stay overnight. Ask the venue about accommodation options and discounts for wedding guests.

Check out reviews from other brides who have used the same venue.

Finally!

The Unrestricted Wedding

W

eddings have long been a very formal affair with rules and regulations, especially where ceremonies are concerned. Church or Registrar run weddings usually mean getting married at a certain time in a specific place (namely one surrounded by four walls and a roof), and strict rules on wording and phrases. However, with a celebrantled wedding, you can design your personal ceremony wherever and whenever you want, without the rules and regulations. If a unique, personal ceremony appeals to you, check out these top tips for making the most of your unrestricted wedding:

1. Dare to be different Every wedding is special, but why not take a risk or two to make your big day stand out from the crowd? The sky really is the limit want your dog to act as your witness? Not a problem for a celebrant wedding (we meant it when we said there were no rules).

2. Cut out the boring bits With a celebrant led ceremony, you can personalise the day so that your ceremony is exactly how you want it. Your celebrant will work with you to design the perfect ceremony 20

that reflects you as a couple, and the best bit? Your ceremony can be as long, or short, as you want.

3. Don’t forget the legal stuff One important thing to consider is that a celebrant-led wedding is not legally binding, so make sure you get yourself down to the registry office to officially tie the knot before the big day. Then you can sit back, relax and enjoy your personalised, unrestricted wedding day.

4. Make the most of unlimited venues Dreaming of a barefoot, beach wedding? Done. An outdoor woodland wedding? No problem. Celebrant weddings can take place anywhere you choose. So, whether you want to tie the knot on a beach, in a castle, in your garden… you can, the only limit is your imagination.

5. Remember: It’s all about YOU! When it comes to celebrant weddings, there’s plenty of room for customisation. It is the perfect opportunity to get that “this is so them” reaction from your guests. From unique readings to nontraditional songs, personalise your ceremony so that it completely reflects you and your partner.

Wedding Real

After meeting initially through an online dating site, Amanda and Richard strolled through a local park with a trip to the pub for their first date and soon became inseparable.

A

manda had always wanted to go to a three Michelin star restaurant, so Richard decided to book a table at The Waterside Inn in Bray for her birthday. Before their meal, they went out to the jetty for a cocktail, one of their favourite things to do together. There, Richard got down on one knee and proposed! Even more special was receiving some photographs captured by a passerby who happened to be taking pictures of the sunset.

As soon as they walked into The Elvetham, they knew it was the perfect place.

Both love drinking cocktails in “Speakeasy” themed bars. 26

The pair spent one year planning their wedding, both involving each other in every decision that came their way. First stop: the venue! As soon as they walked into The Elvetham, they knew it was the perfect place. They could instantly imagine all of their friends and family there and loved the history of the building. Although the couple decided not to have a specific theme for their wedding, it was important for them to include some personal elements that were unique to them as a couple. Amanda and Richard both love drinking cocktails in “speakeasy” themed bars, so they named their tables after cocktails! They even used vintage teapots as centrepieces, as this is how www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

drinks would have traditionally been served in a speakeasy. With homemade sloe gin as wedding favours, the guests and the happy couple were in their element. The highlight of the evening was their live karaoke band set, which Amanda and Richard opened with a duet of Meatloaf’s I Would Do Anything For Love - the perfect start to the evening entertainment! After the big day, the couple enjoyed a five day mini-moon in Florence, and have planned their dream honeymoon to the Caribbean for early next year. GfB The Wedding Directory 2018

Top tips for

Planning your

Wedding By Angela Gibson Luxury Wedding Planner

P

lanning a wedding can be overwhelming - there are so many aspects to think about and decisions to make. However, it’s also a really fun process; there’s nothing more rewarding than arriving on your wedding day and seeing your vision and dreams come to life. To get you started with planning your own wedding, check out these top tips from Angela Gibson, a luxury wedding planner based in Hampshire.

WHEN BUDGET IS LIMITED, CHOOSE YOUR PRIORITIES The first step to planning your wedding is taking time to discuss your priorities as a couple. Break the priorities down into three categories: absolutely essential, very important and nice to have. This ensures that you include the elements of the day that are important to you both. DECIDE WHO YOU REALLY WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON Your guests will make your wedding the most amazing day of your lives, but they are expensive! Cutting down your guest list by ten people could easily save you more than £1000. Up to 30% of those invited will not attend, so break your guest list down into the essentials, the nice to haves and the maybes. After you’ve done this - consider how many children would be accompanying those guests, how that impacts your budget and space and how you feel about having children around during your day. DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE WEDMIN It can take around 250 hours to plan a wedding, so think carefully about your wedding date. 44

Consider how long it gives you to plan and how much time you can realistically dedicate to planning. It’s always worth calling on friends and family to help or employing a wedding planner to do some, or all, of the work. BOOK YOUR SUPPLIERS ACCORDING TO PRIORITY Now I don’t mean your priorities here, I mean those that need reserving first. For example, don’t book the musicians until you have your venue secured and choose www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Enjoy it! Remember, planning a wedding is fun! Take time to sit back and enjoy the process you’ll miss it once it’s over.

your flowers before designing the cake. The checklists in this guide are the perfect way to ensure that you’re on the right track. SPREADSHEETS ARE YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND You’ll need to record absolutely everything that happens from now on - create checklists for each supplier as well as a guest list with individual details and requirements (the Guides for Brides Online Wedding Planner is perfect for this). Most importantly, keep comprehensive notes of conversations you’ve had with everyone that you can refer back to. BUDGET FOR THOSE UNFORESEEN EXTRAS No matter how organised you are or how carefully you watch your budget, there will always be something that costs a little more than expected. I recommend leaving 5% of your overall budget for those unforeseen expenses. MAKE A TIMELINE FOR THE DAY It is absolutely essential to make a timeline for the day so that everyone knows where they should be and what they should be doing. Once you’ve made the timeline, visit the venue with key party members and walk through as you will on your wedding day this will make you so much more relaxed on the actual day and ensure that everything runs smoothly. 45

Catering

Hiring a caterer is a great option for your wedding day, whether your venue doesn’t provide a catering service or you just want to personalise your menu. Many caterers offer more unusual food options, like live paella and hog roast cooking, or sharing boards and antipasti. Most caterers will provide a full service including staffing and equipment hire, but make sure you check the details with your chosen caterer and your wedding venue, as some venues don’t allow outside caterers. 46

S

o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer. Remember, you are trusting this person to capture every moment of your wedding day, so make sure you look at their portfolios and online galleries to get a sense of their work. Next, it’s time to book your transport. A lot of brides already have

Other key suppliers to book at this stage are your DJ or band, evening entertainment, toastmaster, videographer, and your honeymoon. Essential Wedding Photographs

You Won’t Want to Miss... 1. Getting Ready

Invite your wedding photographer to take photos of you and your wedding party getting ready. This is such a fun part of the day and you’ll want to capture these moments forever.

2. The Dresses

Take a photo of your bridesmaids’ dresses hanging up on the morning of the big day. We absolutely love this unique idea – such a great way to show off the beautiful dresses for your beautiful bridesmaids.

3. The Bride and her Bridesmaids

Whether it’s serious or silly, make sure you get a photo of you and your bridesmaids together! No wedding would be complete without them, so make sure your photographer takes plenty of photos. After the wedding, sending your girls a group shot from the day would be a lovely gesture.

4. Confetti!

This photo is a must for all newlyweds. Your wedding photographer should get plenty of photos of you and your partner whilst your guests throw confetti in the air. Not all venues allow confetti, so make sure you discuss this with them before booking.

5. The First Dance

No wedding photo album would be complete without this classic photo. Let your photographer snap plenty of photos of you and your partner dancing together for the first time as a married couple.

6. Detail Close-Ups

It’s not just the big stuff that matters. You’ll want to remember every little detail, so make sure to brief your photographer to capture all the little things as well as the big moments! 54

Wedding Real

After four years together, Chris proposed to Emily with a very unique and personal proposal.

aking advantage of the beautifully clear night, Chris took Emily to Goodwood Hill, where they would really be able to appreciate the starry sky. He asked her to put on headphones and a blindfold so that she had no idea where they were going, then fireman lifted her for over a mile to the top of the hill...! When all was revealed, Chris was suited and booted and down on one knee, asking her to marry him.

Emily finally found “the one” at Anya Bridal Couture, in Hampshire. 56

Their beautiful wedding day took place at Cain Manor, with a rustic, country garden theme. Creams, sages and pinks were key to their decoration, with roses and gypsophila really bringing the theme together. To give the décor a really personal touch, Emily and Chris handmade their centrepieces using logs, tealights and jam jars as well as giving guests personalised love hearts as wedding favours. Emily’s father walked her down the aisle, accompanied by her sister and three friends as bridesmaids. After trying on about 20 different dresses in the lead up to the wedding, Emily finally found “the one” at Anya Bridal Couture in Hampshire a stunning lace Stella York gown. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Chris and Emily’s wedding day was truly magical, they couldn’t have wished for more. The weather was perfect and their guests spent the whole day smiling and laughing. Thanks to the excellent staff at Cain Manor, the only thing they had to worry about was enjoying their wonderful day.

TOP TIPS

for choosing your wedding transport

Choosing you r wedding car is an important dec ision in the wedding planning process and w ith so many factors to con sider, it can seem to tally overwhelmin g.

THE CLASSIC & VINTAGE CAR CO. 27 years of providing beautiful wedding cars

See the Cars Before Booking In order to avoid disappointment, make sure that you have seen the car that you intend to use before booking it. That way you’ll know exactly what you’ll be getting on the morning of your wedding, and you’ll be better informed to make a decision on which type of wedding car you’d like.

Consider your Wedding Dress Something that is often overlooked when booking a wedding car is whether you and your dress will actually fit inside! We advise practising sitting down in your final dress fitting. The first time that a bride attempts sitting down in her dress is often when she’s getting into the car ready to go to their ceremony, and it can be very uncomfortable and difficult to breathe – so make sure you and your dress are in for a comfortable ride to your venue!

Wedding Real

Becca and Alex met aged just 15 and 17 with the help of a mutual friend.

lthough they lived very close, their paths had never really crossed before one day, when Alex was waiting at the bottom of the hill for a friend, Becca managed to slip down said hill as they walked past (do we all remember those silly loafers we all used to wear?), causing Alex to ask, “who’s your clumsy friend?”

After saying yes, the couple ordered burgers to their hotel room. 66

Many years later, Alex proposed to Becca in Abu Dhabi. They’d been gifted tickets to the Formula 1, and Alex had kept the ring safe in a secret compartment in their rucksack all day, planning to propose on the hill at the track. Becca’s playsuit, however, had other ideas and split in a rather embarrassing place, meaning the couple had to leave before he’d got the chance! Since they couldn’t stay for the concert after the race, the couple decided to go out for dinner instead. While Becca was doing her makeup she heard Alex ask her to come and look at something in the bedroom. Naturally, Becca shouted back “can’t you just come and show me here, I’m doing my makeup!” Unperturbed by the lack of reply, Becca continued to finish her makeup first, and then went through to the bedroom. There she found Alex on one knee - he’d www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

been there since he’d asked her to go and look at something! After saying yes, the couple ordered burgers to their hotel room and telephoned their friends and family to share the good news. When the wedding day finally arrived, ten years after the loafers incident, Becca and her TEN bridesmaids got ready at her mum’s house, with the ceremony starting at 12pm. They exchanged their vows in a beautiful local church, before heading to Buxted Park Hotel for their reception. Her beautiful dress came from Fross Wedding Collections, a wonderful bridal store in Uckfield. Becca had such a fabulous GfB The Wedding Directory 2018

experience trying on dresses there and is certain that their seamstress is a miracle worker! Their guests loved their open photobooth, provided by Disco Fever - everyone commented on how great their props were and their personalised sign made for some hilarious photos. Guests were encouraged to stick a photo in their guest book with their message. They also asked guests to leave messages on a canvas with their initials and even had a fingerprint tree, organised by Becca’s sister. Becca and Alex also organised plenty of small elements for the big day, including lollipops for favours, personalised children’s activity bags and hangover kits for all of their guests! To ensure that the dancefloor was packed all night, Becca purchased enough flip flops for all the girls, which she tied with parcel string and a label indicating the size - that way, no one could complain of sore feet! They couldn’t have done it all without the support of their amazing family and friends, who all made sure that the couple had the most amazing day. 68

To top it all off, the couple honeymooned in Aruba, which was chosen and organised by Alex’s parents. It was kept a total secret until the wedding day, when it was announced by Alex’s dad during the speeches. Their beautiful wedding day was photographed by S Butler Photography. The photographers worked tirelessly from 8am-11.30pm and the couple couldn’t have been happier, providing them with the best memories from their magical day. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Green with

Envy

Use your wedding to create a luscious garden paradise. This year, greenery is Pantone’s hottest trending colour and we’ve come up with several ways for you to bring a stunning natural backdrop indoors for your big day. Why should you take note? Greenery is this year’s colour of new beginnings: It’s fantastically natural, modern and reviving! In the colder months, especially, it’s perfect for bringing the great outdoors into your venue. Installations

This year, take eyes upwards. Expert event planners have been raving about ceiling potential! Create a sense of wonder by hanging garlands or weaving greenery along beams or a freestanding framework over your venue. You can incorporate floating orbs or lights into the design, which will create an enchanted feel.

Trees

The greenest of evergreens are a major go to for creating an impact. You can line aisles with trees for a verdant vista, or, have them in and amongst the tables of your venue. There’s no limit to the choices you can go for – olive, citrus, cypress, birch… Plenty of these will work! We’d recommend either renting or purchasing and planting, so that after your wedding, you can stay as sustainable as possible.

Plant Life

Clippings, specimens, jars, terrariums: Anything with leaves has been making a big appearance on Pinterest this year. Focus on lush, leafy greens and accents for your wedding, set against the simplest of backdrops. The colour of the year can’t be wrong!

Pale Flowers

Less is more with this trend: To achieve a natural, rustic look, keep it pared down! Go for neutral, pale coloured flowers to compliment the greens – we think that white and peach look stunning! Remember, you don’t need lots of flowers to nail this trend. Instead, create small accents here and there with your florals…Let the greenery do the talking! 76

How to find your

Perfect Wedding Dress Finding your perfect wedding dress is one of the first things to tick off your list as a bride to be. It can often take a long time to order your dress, and you’ll need to leave plenty of time for fittings. It is the most important dress that you will ever wear, and it’s so important that you feel

comfortable and happy with your choice on your big day. Many brides find the task overwhelming, having no idea where to start - but don’t worry because we’re here with our top five ways to find your perfect wedding dress:

Work out your Budget

1

Your wedding dress is one of your first wedding planning purchases, so make sure you’ve got a clear budget worked out. There is no doubt that the better quality gowns are more flattering as they will have more support and structure built in, so think about how much you’re prepared to pay for this. You’ll typically be able to find a budget gown for £300-600, but for £800-£1500 you’ll have a great choice, and designer dresses can start anywhere from £1200.

Use a Directory

2

Using a Wedding Directory helps narrow down your search so that you can see what is available in your local area. Simply type in what you’re looking for and the directory will provide you with a list of all the suppliers in your area. You should also be able to find information on the site on wedding dress designers, with some even allowing you to browse their designs. Check out www.guidesforbrides.co.uk/find/wedding-bridal-wear to help you find your perfect dress.

Browse Bridal Stores A great way to get inspiration for dresses is heading straight to bridal boutiques and having a look around. You can get an idea of the kind of styles you like and get advice from those working there. If you’ve already browsed online, you’re much more likely to go into your wedding dress appointment with a clearer idea of what you’re looking for, and your consultant will be one step closer to finding you your dream dress.

Wedding Shows & Fairs If you’re looking for inspiration for the kind of dress you would like to wear on your big day, a great way to get inspired is by going to wedding shows and fairs. You’ll have the opportunity to get the first look at emerging trends and check out various designers while you’re there. This is a great idea for fashion-forward brides who are looking for an on-trend look for their big day.

Pinterest

3 4 5

Pinterest is the ultimate tool for brides to be. You can create a board for each part of your wedding and keep all your inspiration in one place that’s easy to reach. Begin by creating a board with all the dresses that have caught your eye, and then narrow down your research with boards for specific designers and styles. It’s a great tool that you can use in your bridal wear appointments to give your consultant an idea of what you’re looking for.

FIVE WAYS TO Personalise your Wedding Dress Your wedding day is the most important day of your life, but it’s also a hugely important occasion for those closest to you. If you’re looking for ways to personalise your dress and honour the most important people in your life, we’ve come up with 6 easy ways to do it.

1. Stitch your Wedding Date

into your Dress.

A lovely way to honour your wedding date is by sewing your wedding date into the hem of your dress. You could even use blue thread and have it count as your ‘something blue’, too.

2. Add a monogram into your gown.

To make your dress even more personal, why not have a monogram made and sew it into the lining of your dress? They are a beautiful way to make your dress even more sentimental, and it can also act as your ‘something blue’.

3. Incorporate some material from your

mother, or grandmother’s dress into your wedding gown.

If they don’t mind you chopping up their wedding dresses (we wouldn’t blame them if they did), you could find a way to incorporate some of their fabric into your gown. You could embroider pieces into the dress or use the fabric as a waistband, or if you don’t want it to form part of your actual dress, why not wrap some fabric around your bridal bouquet? Using the fabric of a family 80

member’s dresses is a beautiful way to honour the important women in your life on your wedding day.

4. Use a piece of your mum’s wedding dress fabric for your garter. If you don’t want to incorporate your mum’s wedding dress fabric into your dress, but you’d still like to carry a piece of her gown with you, why not find a way to use some of the fabric for your garter? It’s a fun way to include your mum’s dress in your wedding day.

5. Add a Brooch that belonged to someone important to you.

If you’re lucky enough to have a family heirloom in the form of a brooch, it’s the perfect way to add a personal touch to your dress. If you feel that it doesn’t quite go with your overall look, you can always use it as a hairpiece, add it to your band or pop it into your bouquet to give it a little more sparkle! www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

Which metal is best for your

WEDDING BAND? Why can’t I have a pure gold wedding band? Pure gold is too soft for jewellery, so it’s mixed with metal alloys to create different colours and ensure that it is hard-wearing.

metal types Platinum Hard-wearing with a cool luster, this rare metal is perfect if you’re after a durable ring that won’t lose its colour or brilliance. Despite being a more expensive choice, a platinum ring will last a lifetime and is considered the most prestigious metal for jewellery.

White Gold If you’re looking for the natural white colour of platinum without the pricetag, white gold is a great option. White gold rings use pure gold alloyed with various other white metals and are plated with rhodium to give their brilliant white colour, which does wear away over time. Replating is a simple process, which will restore your band to its former brilliance.

Palladium This white precious metal forms part of the platinum group, but can be more affordable. Popular for its hardness and natural white colour that won’t fade, palladium rings are durable option that provide a stunning backdrop for diamonds.

Yellow Gold With its warm mixture of pure gold, copper and silver, yellow gold is once again proving a popular choice for wedding bands. The carat of yellow gold you choose will make a difference to the colour and hardness of the band, so bear this in mind when matching your wedding band to your engagement ring.

Rose Gold Rose gold includes a higher percentage of copper, giving it its red tones. An on-trend choice for wedding bands, it is surprisingly affordable and more hard-wearing than yellow or white gold. Like with yellow gold, the carat affects the colour of the ring: A higher percentage of gold will give the ring a lighter rose gold tone, while more copper will give more of a red colour. Is your wedding bankrupting your bridesmaids? Weddings are expensive. For you, for your parents, for your guests, and also for your bridesmaids. But is your bridal party struggling to keep up with the costs? When you’re getting married it’s hard not to get caught up in your bridal bubble, and the budget often goes out of the window. You may have come to terms with the cost and are going all out to get your perfect day, and that’s a great situation to be in. However, it’s often difficult to remember that it’s actually only you that’s getting married, and all of your besties might not be quite so excited about the cost of your wedding. The bridesmaids especially can incur huge costs for your wedding, and most of that comes from the hen party. You might be super excited for your all out weekend in Ibiza, but your Maid of Honour’s bank account may not be quite bikini ready… Now a girls weekend away is always a great idea, but imagine if you’ve been invited to four next summer? That means serious saving for your girls. According to a Guides for Brides Twitter Poll, an overwhelming majority would prefer to stay in the UK for their friend’s hen party, because the cost is just too much. So if you’re planning on an overseas hen party, be understanding

86

if some of your friends can’t make it, or to search for close to home hen party suppliers, head to www. guidesforbrides.co.uk. Then we’ve also got the tricky subject of whether your bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. Although this is becoming a more acceptable ask, this definitely causes some bitterness between friends. According to our research the majority do believe that the bride should pay for their maids’ dresses, though those that thought it was totally okay to ask bridesmaids to pay weren’t far behind. Perhaps if they’re each choosing their own dresses (and therefore would definitely wear them again) it’s more acceptable to ask them to fit the bill, but if you’re asking your girls to cough up for a dress that they have no say over and wouldn’t wear again, it’s got to be on the bride. The most important thing is to listen to your girls and be honest with them – you’ll be able to tell if they’re concerned about where the money is coming from. All weddings incur costs for the guests, travel can be a huge expense, and if they need accommodation, things can get really pricey. But before you get caught inside the wedding bubble, spare a thought for your girls – they might not be fortunate enough to throw the budget out of the window.

Decadence

The decadent cake is a lavish trend for opulent and indulgent weddings. These large cakes cater for a large number of guests and are a real focal point at a grand wedding breakfast. The design aspects of the decadence cake are limitless. They are elaborately decorated

using Royal Icing, the perfect material to use on luxurious and grand wedding cakes. Rich, opulent colour tones are styled and embellished with jewels, pearls, sequins and sugar detailing, giving each cake a stunning regal flare.

Warm Metallics

Soft rose gold and copper tones are on trend in the interiors and fashion world, meaning we’re seeing these metallic tones within the wedding industry, too. Most popular around autumn time, warm metallics are now becoming increasingly popular all year round. The beauty GfB The Wedding Directory 2018

of these cakes is that they can be either bold or subtle depending on your theme. The design options are endless with the use of chic metallic sequins, materials and textures to create a unique cake to suit your style. 93

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last. Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write some speeches that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. This is a great way to ensure that your bridal look is exactly what you envisaged. We also encourage making sure that all your balances
