ongratulations, you’re engaged! Now comes the exciting part: Planning your big day. But, before you get carried away with fantasies about the wedding you’ve been dreaming of, we’re here to make everything a little easier for you. From finding the perfect venue to creating the all-important guestlist, some of the biggest decisions you make will happen in the early planning stages. So, to make sure your wedding is as beautiful as you imagine it to be, we’ve created this simple checklist to help you every step of the way on your wedding planning journey. First things first, before you even think about the details, you’ll need to decide on a budget. Sit down with your partner and think practically about how much money you’re able and willing to spend on your wedding. After you’ve thought about how much cash you want to splash, it’s time for the tricky bit: Working out which lucky people get to

T

his lovely couple first met at a ping-pong bar in London, and after four years of dating Emily and Gilles got engaged and started wedding planning. 18 months later they tied the knot in a gorgeous winethemed wedding at Kirtlington Park in Oxfordshire. Emily and Gilles chose Kirtlington Park for the beautiful building, its grand Saloon ceremony room with amazing views, and the useful location which was mid-way between their two families. It made the perfect elegant setting for their wedding, which had a wine theme. The table plan was a grape vine, and each table was named after a type of wine, with the top table being Champagne, naturally! Corks were used for the place names, and for wedding favours each guest received a miniature bottle of Jenever from Belgium, where the groom grew up. Even the bridesmaids matched the wine theme in their stunning burgundy evening gowns, and the bouquets created by Fabulous Flowers included deep red flowers like dahlias and peonies. The colour stood out beautifully against Emily’s ivory floral

lace gown - Tami from Maggie Sottero - which she accessorised with pearl drop earrings and an embellished veil. After the wedding ceremony in the Saloon during which a live pianist played, the newlyweds and their guests enjoyed a wedding breakfast of chilled seared tuna to start, a chicken supreme with tarragon cream, baby leeks and pressed garlic potato for mains. Dessert was a trio of lemon and passion fruit tart with lemon curd, summer berry pavlova, and dark chocolate torte with white chocolate mousse and pistachio brittle. Delicious! In the evening everyone enjoyed live music on the dancefloor, while a caricaturist kept the guests entertained. After the big day, Emily and Gilles travelled to Tuscany for a minimoon, before hitting New Zealand for a welldeserved three-week honeymoon.

CELEBRANT

Planning Your Wedding? Do you want to have total control over the content & style? Or hold it in a venue that is not registered? Do you feel restricted by the vows on offer? Or have quirky, romantic ideas that you would like to include?

Then you need a Wedding Celebrant Let me be part of your wedding team...

Erica Harley m: 07798 911734 enquiry@theridgewaycelebrant.co.uk

(You need to have used a registrar for the legal bit!)

celebrant /’selıbr( )nt/noun The Role of a Celebrant is to conduct non-religious marriage ceremonies, commitment ceremonies, funerals, namings and other ceremonies.

32

Celebrant-led weddings are becoming increasingly popular with couples looking for more freedom for their ceremony. Erica Harley, The Ridgeway Celebrant, explains a little about what celebrant ceremonies involve... What is a celebrant-led ceremony? While civil ceremonies have to be done in a certain way to be legal, celebrants give couples freedom with their ceremony. Couples can create their own vows, include poems, readings and music to suit their tastes and include religious elements or spiritual ones, such as handfasting. Plus, rather than having to choose a registered ceremony venue or a religious building, couples can choose any place or time for their celebrant-led ceremony. Not only does your celebrant offer more freedom and flexibility than a registrar, but they’ll make a concerted effort to become part of the wedding team, rather than just a stranger conducting a ceremony.

How can I make my celebrant ceremony legal? Celebrant weddings aren’t legally binding, so you must book a legal ceremony with a registrar as well if you want your marriage to be legally binding. The legal ceremony occurs either in a Registry Office or in a registered venue - this can happen before or after your celebrant ceremony. Fees for the legal ceremony can vary - just the 2 of you with no extras could be £50-£70, whereas 2 registrars attending at a registered venue could be as high as £720.00. Often it depends on the day of the week, time of day and location.

How do celebrants prepare for a wedding with the couple? Generally there is a free consultation to see if the couple mesh well with their celebrant and are happy to book. This is followed by a number of meetings to help the couple discuss the details of the ceremony, such as the vows, music, and readings. This can be done either by telephone or face-to-face. Most celebrants will expect a deposit paid at the first meeting to save the date, and then they can get to work on creating a personalised wedding ceremony for their couple.

TIP TOP TIPIS

There’s no doubt that wedding tipis are super popular right now. Tipi weddings are ideal for boho brides, festival-themed weddings and more laidback wedding receptions, but they can also be transformed into super glamorous outdoor wedding venues. We spoke to the lovely team at Katah Events about their amazing wedding tipis... a kind of rustic chic to a very elegant space. Lighting is key — once the natural light goes down, beautiful interior lighting transforms the space so guests have that ‘Wow!’ experience all over again. What’s more, we work in many beautiful venues where our uplighting of the trees creates a simply magical effect. Images by: Claire Williams Photography

TIPIS VS MARQUEES Our wedding tipis are a show-stopping alternative to a marquee — simply put, they’re much more beautiful! As well as that, the tipis can be put together in any number of configurations which means much more flexibility in terms of shape and space. The couples who we usually work with want the ‘wow’ factor and to be able to make their space their own.

A BLANK CANVAS WEDDING VENUE As well as being impressive in their own right, wedding tipis are a blank canvas. Interiors can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. It’s important that guests feel comfortable in their surroundings, so our interiors are a mix of luxury and cosiness. Our couples and wedding planners love our handcrafted furniture and bars, and all of this can be added to with the floristry and decor in keeping with each wedding’s unique theme.

It’s all about creating a unique and memorable space. No two weddings are the same, and we are always working with our couples and other suppliers to create a bespoke design every time.

BRIDES ON A BUDGET For the 2019 season we have just introduced our circular bar and a vintage hanging wagon wheel which are beautiful and can be decorated in keeping with the theme – your chosen flowers can hang from the roof of the tipi! We offer rustic table and bench dining furniture which are fun while still being elegant. With thanks to Katah Events.

What sets us apart is the option to have beautiful tent linings which really elevate the tipis from

S

o, you’ve booked the perfect venue and popped the big question to your bridesmaids and now it’s time to snap up your favourite suppliers. This crucial stage of wedding planning can be stressful, but it’s important that you start early (ideally 9-12 months before the big day!) so you can get all of the suppliers you want. The key to booking suppliers is to know what you’re looking for, so make sure you have an idea of what you want before you get started. We recommend attending local wedding fairs to get inspired (turn to the back of the guide for local wedding fairs). The first supplier that you should think about booking is your photographer and any other supplier that can only do one wedding per day. When it comes to booking your transport, a lot of brides already have an idea of how they want to arrive at their venue. So, whether it’s a gorgeous vintage car, or a stylish limousine, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Other key suppliers

VIDEOGRAPHY

How To Choose Your Wedding Videographer

D

ecide your style. Make sure that you’ve looked at a good range of videographers and their video portfolios to decide which style you prefer. Do you want something very cinematic, or more casual? Do you want direct messages to camera, or more natural, unobtrusive storytelling? Do you want a vintage effect, or something more modern? There are so many videography styles out there, so make sure you’re choosing something that works with your wedding theme. Look at the packages. Wedding videography packages can vary massively, from 5-minute trailers to hours of footage. Don’t assume that all videographers will include your ceremony and speeches as

separate cuts - make sure you look closely at the different packages your videographer offers and you know exactly what’s included for the price. Think about extras. These days there are loads of fun extras you can add to your wedding videography package. What about a video guest book, dramatic drone footage, a marryoke music video or stop-motion? Look at their reviews. It’s not just enough to look at a video portfolio - it’s important to read reviews for your videographer for peace of mind and to ensure your personalities will be a good fit. You find wedding videographer reviews from real couples at: guidesforbrides.co.uk www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

PHOTOGRAPHY Questions To Ask Your Photographer Is a pre-wedding photo shoot included in the price? Many photographers offer engagement shoots. These are not only great fun, but they enable you to develop a relationship with your photographer before your big day. Can I see an example of a full wedding album? Always ensure that you’ve seen a full wedding from your photographer from start to finish. Do you provide full-day coverage? Asking what time the photographer starts on your wedding day is a key question. Do they capture those getting ready moments? What time do they will leave the reception in the evening?

FINE ART REPORTAGE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Do you work with an assistant? Some bring an assistant to focus on capturing the guests and their reactions so the main photographer can focus solely on the couple. How long shall we set aside for photos on the big day? Your photographer can work with you to decide how long you’ll need for both group photos and couple shots, depending on your venue location, the season and the size of your wedding. How soon after my wedding will I get to see my photos? It is always useful to ask how long you will have to wait so you are not disappointed by a long turnaround.

A beautiful colourful English-Indian wedding in a barn.

Claire &Viren Photography Julia Evans Photography

V

iren and Claire got married in July in a beautifully colourful wedding day that combined both their Indian and English heritage. “We wanted to incorporate both cultures into one fantastic day filled with lots of colour, sparkle and - of course great food,” says bride Claire. The couple held their outdoor ceremony at the Oxford Thames Hotel, overlooking the River Thames, before travelling to Fison Barn at the Earth Trust in Little Wittenham for the reception. “The barn was amazing as it was a blank canvas that you could transform it into your perfect venue,” says Claire. As the newlyweds arrived at the reception, dhol players welcomed them to the barn.

An outdoor ceremony by the Thames. 40

For the ceremony, the bride wore a stunning tea-length gown from Brighton Belle, and in the evening changed into a vibrant magenta saree. The wedding colour scheme was bright shades and gold accents, so the bridesmaids all wore sarees in different colours. The groom and groomsmen all wore navy suits hired from Moss Bros. The bride and bridesmaids carried amazing bouquets made up of brightly-coloured wildflowers, www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

roses and sunflowers, which also appeared on the tables. The table decor also included bright organza chair sashes, mirrored candle holders, hummingbird place names and personalised Love Heart wedding favours. The guests enjoyed a delicious threecourse Indian meal cooked by Chef’s Flavour from Leicestershire, as well as an Indian buffet in the evening. There was also a scrumptious dessert in the form of their four-tier wedding cake decorated with white chocolate and fresh flowers. For the entertainment, a DJ from Calibar Events played a mix of songs from both Indian and English background. There was such variety that everyone was up and dancing! re’s bouquet w C l ai as ar io t

Honeymoon Inspiration:

Vietnam

Amanoi

What to do You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to visit in Vietnam, and there’s plenty of choice whether you’re looking for a city break, a beach escape or a mix of both. Internal flights and taxis are inexpensive and simple to arrange so we’d encourage you to explore more than one area. Vietnam’s capital Hanoi is a bustling and vibrant city packed with incredible food, sights and attractions, while Hoi An is popular with travellers thanks to its old world charm and fantastic blend of cultural influences. If you’d rather be exploring nature, then the 48

world-famous Halong Bay should be on your list. It’s made up of thousands of islands and is ideal for scuba diving, rock climbing and hiking. We also recommend Dalat, which is also known as ‘The Alps of Vietnam’ - this jaw-dropping region is home to Xuan Huong Lake and The Valley of Love.

Where to stay There is a huge choice of hotels offering great prices in every city and tourist area, however we’d really encourage you to make the most of the 5* hotels which offer excellent value www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

for money compared to similar hotels in other countries. It is your honeymoon, after all... Amanoi A 5-star resort on Vietnam’s South East coast, Amanoi is based on the edge of Nui Chua National Park, which makes it ideal for those who want to explore the rugged unspoilt beauty of this region. Each of the villas, pavilions and residences comes with a fabulous view of either the mountain, forest, lake or sea. The Aman Spa is set on a lotus-filled lake and offers a whole host of innovative treatments as well as an immersive wellness program. Take advantage of the complementary classes in the yoga pavilion before enjoying delicious food at one of the two restaurants.

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay

Six Senses Ninh Van Bay This luxurious 5-star resort is only accessible by boat from Nha Trang, which gives you the impression that you’re on your own private island. The incredible villa accommodation boasts breathtaking views of the bay. There are three great restaurants, as well as a wine cave and cocktail bar, and you can indulge in some post-wedding pampering in the Six Senses Spa.

HONEYMOON PLANNING - MADE EASY 50

www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

1 2 3 4 5

Top honeymoon tips...

Plan and book your honeymoon early. Not only do the best rooms in the most popular hotels get booked up early, but trying to plan a honeymoon on top of last-minute wedding stress is the last thing you need. Flight schedules come out 11 months in advance of travel dates, but accommodation can be booked before. Don’t forget about your name change! If you’re taking your new partner’s name or double-barrelling, decide before you book if you want to travel in your new married name, as it can cause complications to change names on tickets. Think about a realistic budget. There’s nothing worse than splashing out on an expensive hotel and not being able to buy a drink once you’re there. Much better to have the best room in a less expensive hotel and live like a king and queen. Be prepared for flight delays and changes. Remember, even scheduled airlines can impose flight changes. Our advice is to try to avoid flying the night of your wedding and wait at least a day. Enjoy yourself! Look after each other and enjoy your once-in-a-lifetime experience. Remember, paradise is who you’re with, not where you are.

honeymoon /’h nımu:n/noun The Babylonians started calling the month after the wedding the “honey month”, as the bride’s father would give the groom all the honey beer he wanted.

ow that you’ve got the admin sorted, it’s finally time for the best part of planning a wedding... deciding on your bridal wear! This is the most important dress you’ll ever buy, so make it count. Whether you’ve always known want you want to wear on your big day, or if you’ve got no idea, relax and enjoy this exciting step. To begin with, start with buying your bridal gown, shoes, accessories, veil and underwear. Why not take your bridesmaids to a bridal wear shop and get their dresses at the same time? There are so many fabulous wedding dress shops, and this experience will last a lifetime. At this stage of planning, we also recommend

Steps to Finding The Perfect Dress

1). Start Early Don’t leave it until the last minute to start looking for your dress! We recommend starting to shop around 10-12 months in advance, as designer wedding dresses can take up to six months to arrive in store. 2). Do Your Research Make a Pinterest board full of your favourite dresses to get an idea of what you’re looking for in your dream gown. There are so many variations that it helps to have a clear idea of what you like before you start visiting bridal shops. 3). Go with Your Heart Whilst looking for your dress, there’s no doubt you’ll be bombarded with opinions. Listen to advice and take it on board, but always put your own opinion first. It’s your wedding day, so wear a dress that YOU love. 4). Keep an Open Mind When shopping for your wedding dress, try to keep an open mind. Challenge yourself by trying on a style or colour that you wouldn’t usually go for. You might be surprised! 5). Have Fun If you expect to walk into a bridal shop and see “the dress” straight away, then you’ll only stress yourself out with the pressure. Try to have a lighthearted attitude to dress shopping and don’t overthink it.

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE

Top Tips for Wedding Hats

C

hoose a statement dress or a statement hat - but not both! A striking hat or fascinator can elevate a simple dress, or a minimal hat allows a bold dress to shine. You don’t want your dress and accessories to compete. Be sure that the colour compliments your outfit rather than matching it completely. Speak to your boutique or milliner about what accent colours they recommend pairing with your outfit. Experiment - but ultimately, choose something you’re comfortable in.

We always recommend trying a range of styles, sizes and shapes (you might be surprised at what suits you!), but feeling comfortable in your choice is key to looking relaxed and happy in photographs. If you’re looking for designer style on a budget, then many milliners or mother of the bride boutiques will hire hat styles out. Conversely, if you’re after a very specific design, you can have a bespoke style made just for you. Just be sure you leave enough time for the design and creation process.

A Chic Outdoor Wedding with a Coral Theme.

Ashleigh &Matthew Photography Alice Morgan Photography

T

his lovely couple first met at work, and seven years later, they were walking down the aisle in a beautiful outdoor wedding at Worton Hall, Cassington! Ashleigh and Matt chose their gorgeous wedding venue as it ticked so many boxes. “I liked the rustic theme, and we were keen for somewhere with onsite accommodation - Worton has a farmhouse which sleeps 21 people,” says Ashleigh. “We could also get married outside, and therefore Worton seemed the ideal place for us.” The couple tied the knot in a sunny outdoor ceremony under the pagoda before enjoying a reception with their 81 day guests in the main barn.

The cake was made by the groom’s mum. 66

Bride Ashleigh looked amazing in her Oleg Cassini wedding dress, while groom Matt looked dapper in a brilliant blue Ted Baker suit hired from Moss Bros. The bridesmaids wore strapless coral dresses with statement gold earrings, and carried bouquets made up of coral peonies, cream roses and gypsophila made by the bride’s aunt! Ashleigh’s bouquet featured matching flowers as well as beautiful white peonies and hypericum berries, and was made by Classic Flowers in Witney. www.guidesforbrides.co.uk

After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests enjoyed a sunny drinks reception on the lawn with an ice cream bike, before moving into the barn for the wedding breakfast. The menu was goat’s cheese salad, lamb, and dessert was chocolate mousse, and each guest received homemade chocolate tiffin as a wedding favour. “These were also doubled up as our name places as we put tags on which Matt’s sister wrote the names on using her calligraphy skills,” says Ashleigh. For the evening reception, Matt from Visually Sound Events kept everyone dancing with an amazing DJ set, which the bride loved. “Dancing with all my friends and family in the evening was probably my favourite moment of the day!” says Ashleigh.

FLORISTS

we r o l f ding d e W 20 0 2 r fo s d n tr e

We’ve picked some of our favourite wedding flower trends set to be huge in 2020...

Locally-grown More and more brides are working with sustainable floristry to help keep their bouquets and floral arrangements eco-friendly. Rather than flying in unseasonal blooms, brides are preferring to choose seasonal, British-grown flowers to keep their carbon footprint low. Grasses and Dried Flowers Although we’ve loved the greenery trend, it’s slowly giving way to the earthier, more neutral tones of dried flowers and grasses such as pampas grass, dried hops and wheat sheaves. We think this looks stunning at summer and autumn weddings in particular.

Floral Aisles For aisle decoration with impact, we’re loving the look of loose, wildflower-style arrangements placed all down the aisle. It looks incredible in photos and will make you feel like you’re walking through a meadow. Statement Blooms If your budget doesn’t stretch to a giant bouquet of traditional blooms, then why not focus on one statement flower and build your arrangements around it? A single protea, bird of paradise, sunflower or even artichoke can make a big difference in a bouquet!

ou’ve sorted out all the big things and it’s time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s often said that it’s the little details that make a wedding stand out from the crowd, so spend a little time organising the things that you’ve left until last. Whether it’s gifts for the bridal party and parents, or confirming the details with your suppliers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get a touch more organised. To start with, why not organise your table plan for the wedding breakfast, or write a speech that won’t leave a dry eye in the house? Whilst you’re putting the last little bits together, a lot of brides choose to have a trial run of their makeup during this time. This is a great way to ensure that your bridal look is exactly what you envisaged. We also encourage making sure that all your balances

our wedding is drawing near and excitement is in the air. You’ve spent so long organising every little detail and making sure that this day will be everything you dreamed it to be, and now it’s time to make sure everything is good to go. Some couples find the last week the most stressful, but try to relax and enjoy every single moment. Use this time as an opportunity to ensure that you have everything you’ll need with you on the day. No bride wants to spend her wedding morning frantically searching for her veil, so spend some time making sure that everything is accounted for. It’s also a wonderful time to arrange some time together before you say “I do”.

3 Visiting a wedding fair soon? Here’s how to make the most of it…

1

Wear comfy shoes! Wedding fairs can be huge, especially the national shows, so it’s a long day on your feet. Wear comfortable flats that you know won’t give you blisters. If you want to try on wedding dresses, you can always bring a pair of heels in your bag.

2

Speaking of bags, be sure to bring a large bag with a comfortable strap, as you’ll be getting lots of magazines, samples and leaflets on the day to carry around with you.

82

Make sure you bring the right people with you. Wedding fairs make for the perfect girly day out, but if you have a large bridal party, you may not want to bring all the bridesmaids. The maid of honour and the mother of the bride are perfect wedding fair companions, and we also recommend bringing the groom along. That way you can make any decisions together.

4 5

Plan ahead. Take a look at who’s going to be attending the fair and make a note of which suppliers you want to visit, so you can plan a strategy.

Make sure your ducks are in a row financially. Many wedding fair suppliers will have great offers and discounts available to attendees, but you may have to be prepared to put down a deposit on the day.
