There’s a lot to pay for when you’ve got your own home. And paying for unnecessary electricity usage shouldn’t be on the list. Here are a few easy habit changes to help keep money in your pocket.

Ever used a timer for washing machines, dishwashers or hot water? The cheapest and cleanest way to run appliances is to put them to work between 11pm and 5am. Guernsey imports over 90% of electricity from renewable sources in Europe, and the rest of your demand is topped up with diesel-generated electricity from the Vale power station* At night less people use electricity – so we never need to switch on diesel generators between 11pm and 5am. Any electricity you demand during this time will be 100% renewable, meaning you can wash clothes or run a car on cleaner energy. 85

These trackers sit on a countertop & help you take control of your electricity usage. You’ll be surprised with how much background electricity you use. Even 5p an hour spent on background electricity could cost more than £400 a year. Energy monitors help identify where this usage is coming from so you can decide if it’s really needed.

Electrical appliances rely on efficiency. The more efficient an appliance, the less it costs to use. Dirt and dust easily clog up appliances, so they don’t work as efficiently as they’re supposed to. Dust on radiator columns prevent heat from flowing freely, filter blockages in washing machines mean higher temperatures for longer, and even coils in your fridge collect dust. Clean off dust to help your appliances work more cheaply.

If you need a new appliance or you’re planning an upgrade, money spent on energy-efficient appliances will get paid back quickly in reduced running costs. Use Eco Cycles on appliances as they’re designed to cut electricity and water use, and could cut energy use by around 16%. Research the most energy-efficient appliances you can afford – such as washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers. The Energy Saving Trust’s website is a helpful source for the latest information.

Switch the timer on your hot water cylinder to start heating water from 11pm at night. This will cost over 50% less** than earlier in the day & is powered with 100% renewable electricity. If you don’t already have one, ask your installer about installing a programmable thermostat so your hot water cylinder isn’t running as much during expensive peak hours.
