Ever used a timer for washing machines, dishwashers or hot water? The cheapest and cleanest way to run appliances is to put them to work between 11pm and 5am. Guernsey imports over 90% of electricity from renewable sources in Europe, and the rest of your demand is topped up with diesel-generated electricity from the Vale power station* At night less people use electricity – so we never need to switch on diesel generators between 11pm and 5am. If you need a new appliance or you’re planning an upgrade, money spent on energy-efficient appliances will get paid back quickly in reduced running costs. Use Eco Cycles on appliances as they’re designed to cut electricity and water use, and could cut energy use by around 16%. Research the most energy-efficient appliances you can afford – such as washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers. The Energy Saving Trust’s website is a helpful source for the latest information.
