Electrical solutions could improve the market value of your home. A property powered by imported renewable energy could give you an advantage in a market striving for sustainability and efficiency.
How to future-proof your property If you’d like to enhance your property so it’ll still be a comfortable home and valuable asset as the world changes, here’s some products and tips to consider.
Air source heat pumps Future-proof your property with a 300% efficient heating system. The least expensive and lowest carbon intensive way to heat your home. The magic works by converting outdoor air into heat for your home, even when it’s well below freezing. Heat pumps are powered with over 90% renewable hydro, wind and solar electricity – and that’s all you pay for. Thanks to clever mechanics, you’ll enjoy £3 worth of heat for each £1 you spend. Save money and energy with home insulation. Heat pumps work best in well-insulated properties. Reduce heat escaping through the fabric of your property to knock electricity units off your bill. Insulation is one of the unsung heroes of the climate crisis as it stops a lot of artificial heat entering the atmosphere while leaving us with more money to spend on other things.
Need an installer? We can help with that. Our team of qualified electricians and plumbers are experienced in projects that help improve homes in support of Guernsey’s transition to renewable energy. Visit electricity.gg/ourservices or call 241984.

Electric Heating Enjoy cleaner, greener heating that doesn’t cost the earth. Upgrade to heating powered with renewables. Properties heated by gas, oil, or solid fuel will spend a lot of money on greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil-fuel systems are never 100% efficient, even at new. And gas and oil boilers lose efficiency over time, which means spending money on waste gases instead of precious home heating. Electric heating is practically 100% efficient and remains so throughout its lifetime - each £1 you spend is £1 worth of heat. And if your home is well-insulated, your money will go much further. Plan ahead and submit applications as soon as possible. The most satisfied customers found planning 2 years in advance helped manage lead times for applications, potential supply line cable upgrades, planning applications, and contractor timeframes. Don’t wait until your boiler breaks, get in touch with your preferred installer as early as possible.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) Drive forward a cleaner future in a vehicle powered with renewables*. Our recently commissioned study revealed electric vehicles in Guernsey can produce around 65% less carbon emissions than petrol and diesel vehicles across their entire lifecycle. This includes lithium-ion battery production, disposal, and on-island diesel-generated electricity. EVs typically cost around 2p (of electricity) per mile to run, which is far cheaper than petrol or diesel vehicles. Want to charge a vehicle as cheaply** as possible AND use 100% renewable energy? Set your on-board timer to charge between 11pm and 5am. As less people use electricity at night, we don’t need to top up our renewable imports with electricity from the power station.

Battery Storage Store renewable energy to use at a later time. Store electricity generated from overnight low-rate and 100% renewable electricity* instead of more expensive, ‘normal rate’ electricity during busy periods such as dinner time. Guernsey Electricity supply the Powervault 3eco system which uses second-life batteries from electric cars. *Renewable energy in Guernsey is imported from the European grid via a subsea cable and is used for over 90% of our electricity usage annually. **If you use the Super Economy 12 tariff.

EV Charging Points Got an EV or thinking about getting one in the next 5 years? Why not get a home charging point installed. Most drivers in Guernsey only need a charger up to 3.6kW. This means less hassle as there’s no need to apply for the additional load. Fast and Rapid chargers are available for those who need it, such as taxi drivers or tradesmen. These are more expensive to buy and Guernsey Electricity also needs to check if the electricity load needed is available in your local area. We recommend speaking to an installer as early as possible.
Important: Most electrical installations need an application to Guernsey Electricity for “additional load”. This assesses if the electricity network in your area & the electricity supply line cable to your property have enough capacity to power your new items. It involves various assessments of the underground high & low voltage cable network by experienced engineers & takes time to fully complete.

There’s a lot to pay for when you’ve got your own home. And paying for unnecessary electricity usage shouldn’t be on the list. Here are a few easy habit changes to help keep money in your pocket.
Ever used a timer for washing machines, dishwashers or hot water? The cheapest and cleanest way to run appliances is to put them to work between 11pm and 5am. Guernsey imports over 90% of electricity from renewable sources in Europe, and the rest of your demand is topped up with diesel-generated electricity from the Vale power station* At night less people use electricity – so we never need to switch on diesel generators between 11pm and 5am. Any electricity you demand during this time will be 100% renewable, meaning you can wash clothes or run a car on cleaner energy. 85

These trackers sit on a countertop & help you take control of your electricity usage. You’ll be surprised with how much background electricity you use. Even 5p an hour spent on background electricity could cost more than £400 a year. Energy monitors help identify where this usage is coming from so you can decide if it’s really needed.
Electrical appliances rely on efficiency. The more efficient an appliance, the less it costs to use. Dirt and dust easily clog up appliances, so they don’t work as efficiently as they’re supposed to. Dust on radiator columns prevent heat from flowing freely, filter blockages in washing machines mean higher temperatures for longer, and even coils in your fridge collect dust. Clean off dust to help your appliances work more cheaply.

If you need a new appliance or you’re planning an upgrade, money spent on energy-efficient appliances will get paid back quickly in reduced running costs. Use Eco Cycles on appliances as they’re designed to cut electricity and water use, and could cut energy use by around 16%. Research the most energy-efficient appliances you can afford – such as washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers. The Energy Saving Trust’s website is a helpful source for the latest information.

Switch the timer on your hot water cylinder to start heating water from 11pm at night. This will cost over 50% less** than earlier in the day & is powered with 100% renewable electricity. If you don’t already have one, ask your installer about installing a programmable thermostat so your hot water cylinder isn’t running as much during expensive peak hours.
