Ask the

Canterbury Vet Happy Cat Month!

September is Happy Cat Month. This annual event was created by the the CATalyst Council, a national initiative comprised of animal health and welfare organizations working to educate and inform cat owners. The goal is to help cats lead happy, healthy and enriched lives. Here are some of my favorite tips to help keep your cat happy! Provide entertainment for your cat. Make sure your cat has many different toys to play with. Set aside time for interacting and playing with your cat. It will help you bond with your cat and also promote exercise, an important way prevent weight gain and keep your cat’s mind stimulated. Make sure all your cat’s needs are met by providing a clean litter box, perches, hiding places, and scratching surfaces. A clean food and water dish is essential as well. In multiple cat households, you’ll need multiple sets of resources. Without these things, your cat is likely to become stressed and may start exhibiting unwanted behaviors. Stress can also be a contributing factor in illnesses for your cat. This next tip may not make your cat particularly happy but regular veterinary visits are essential for maintaining your cat’s health. A healthy cat is a happy one. Provide preventive medications, even to indoor only cats. No one likes fleas, ticks, or worms, especially your cat. A parasite-free cat is a happy cat—and will keep your family healthier, too. Keep your cat lean and fit. An overweight cat is more susceptible to a variety of diseases, including diabetes. Toys and interactive play will be a big factor in increasing exercise for your cat, helping to burn calories and keep your cat at a proper weight. Calorie control plays a role as well. Microchip your cat. If a cat ever escapes or gets lost, having this type of permanent ID will make a reunion between cat and owner much more likely.

If your cat enjoys spending time outdoors, consider providing a catio. A catio is an outdoor enclosure that will confine your cat to a given space and provide protection from the threats faced by cats that spend time outdoors unsupervised. A catio can provide hours of entertainment for your cat. Another option is taking your cat outdoors on a harness and leash. Your cat will enjoy investigating the outdoor environment and you will be there to keep him safe and secure. Train together. Cats are smart and can be trained to do fun tricks just like dogs. The mental and physical stimulation is great for felines. Teaching your cat to sit, for example, is easy, and training your cat to sit on stools instead of counters will make you and your cat much happier. An added bonus is that training will strengthen the relationship between owner and cat, which will certainly make a cat happy. Work for food. Feline obesity is a huge problem in this country, and one way to combat it is for owners to make their cats work for their food. Food toys are available to channel a cat’s natural hunting drive and release kibble in small amounts. Another option is to hide a cat’s food in different places around the house so they have to find it. Working for food makes a cat happy because it is great physical and mental exercise. Get your cat acclimated to the carrier. Many cat owners find that the worst part about taking their cats anywhere is getting cats into their carriers. Owners should work with their cat to make the carrier a safe, secure, and inviting place to be prior to veterinary visits or family vacations. When the time comes, the cat will be happy to get into the carrier and go off on an adventure. Provide prey toys. One of the easiest ways to make a cat happy is with a new prey toy. Cats are natural hunters and love chasing, pouncing, leaping, swatting and stalking prey, even when it’s not the real thing. There are many types of prey toys available on the market. Cats are wonderful creatures and are easy to make happy. Most cats just want a home with a comfy couch they can stretch out on and a loving owner to scratch them behind their ears. Talk to your vet about more ways to keep your cat happy and healthy. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

BAILEY’S GARAGE

CAR CARE TIPS

DOES ENGINE COOLANT GO BAD? Yes, engine coolant does deteriorate over time, but unless something unusual occurs, you probably won’t need to change the coolant in most late-model vehicles until 100,000 miles. Older vehicles probably require more frequent coolant replacement, so check your owner’s manual to be sure. Most manufacturers now use extended-life coolant with a recommended change interval of 100,000 miles. That varies based on maintenance schedules for each manufacturer and individual models. Some Subarus, for example, call for coolant replacement after 13 years or 132,500 miles. Many Ford engines say to replace it after the first 100,000 miles and every 50,000 miles thereafter, though heavy-duty applications (such as frequent towing) should have it done more often. No matter what the maintenance schedule is for your vehicle, after a few years of ownership it is a good idea to have the coolant checked by a professional periodically for acid buildup, rust and other contaminants, and for its resistance to freezing and boiling. If you have added water (particularly tap water) to top off the cooling system, you may have introduced contaminants or diluted the antifreeze/water mix (generally 50/50) and altered the freezing and boiling points. If your engine is running hotter than normal, deteriorated coolant could be a possible cause. Most manufacturers and service shops recommend flushing the cooling system at the same time the coolant is replaced to get rid of deposits that accumulated over the years. Manufacturers specify certain types of antifreeze, and some may be red, others pink or green, but don’t go to an auto parts store looking for the right color. You need to ask for the right type of antifreeze for your vehicle, whether you’re adding some yourself or having it replaced by a pro.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Use “Open Enrollment” to Help Improve Your Financial Outlook It’s Open Enrollment Season, so if you work for a medium- or large-sized company, you will need to make some choices regarding your employee benefits — and these choices can have a big impact on your financial situation. Depending on your employer, your benefits package may include various types of insurance, plus access to a 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Here are some suggestions for getting the most out of these benefits: •Health insurance – Companies regularly change plans and providers, so the coverage and premiums you had last year may not be the same this year. In any case, look at all aspects of your coverage options – premiums, deductibles, co-pays and total out-of-pocket limits. A lower premium may seem attractive, but you could end up paying even more if the coverage is not as good. So, choose wisely. •Life insurance – You may want to take whatever life insurance your employer offers, but it still might not be enough. To determine how much life insurance you need, consider a variety of factors – your age, income, family size, spouse’s income, and so on. If your employer’s coverage is insufficient, you may want to supplement it with a separate policy. •Disability insurance – This could be a valuable employee benefit – but, as is the case with life insurance, your employer’s disability coverage may not be enough for your needs, especially if you’d like to protect yourself against an illness or injury that could sideline you from work for a long time. Consequently, you might want to consider purchasing your own disability policy.

with Jerry Pittz

Apart from reviewing your insurance options, you may want to examine your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Of course, your employer may allow you to change your 401(k) throughout the year, but you’ve got a particularly good opportunity to do so during open enrollment, when you’re already looking at all your employee benefits. So look at your contribution level. Are you putting in as much as you can afford? Your 401(k)’s earnings can grow tax deferred, and you typically contribute pretax dollars, so the more you put in, the lower your taxable income for the year. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals made before age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) At a minimum, invest enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And increase your own contributions whenever you get a raise. As far as your investment choices, you’ll want to spread your dollars among the different investments within your 401(k) in a way that reflects your risk tolerance and time horizon. During the early stages of your career, when you have many years to go until you retire, you can probably afford to invest more heavily in growth-oriented accounts. These will fluctuate more in value, but you have time to potentially overcome the downturns. When you’re nearing retirement, you may want to shift some of your assets into more conservative vehicles – but even at this point, you still need some growth opportunities. After all, you may spend two or three decades in retirement, so you’ll need to draw on as many resources as possible. Open enrollment isn’t just a time to fill out a bunch of papers. It’s also a chance to reconsider – and maybe even upgrade – many areas of your financial outlook.

A Defining Moment for Politics Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Tip O’Neill said that “all politics is local”, a truth that is recognized in our time that carries through all levels of government and politics. And it is because all politics is local that local elected officials, but those at State and national levels too have an opportunity, a truly defining moment, to bring about the changes necessary to correct the ills of our system of politics and governance. The transformation needed will require the commitment, leadership and personal and political will of politicians holding elected public offices and those in political parties.

Who: Elected representatives and political party leaders need to be the force leading to meaningful and lasting change. Crusading federal and State prosecutors are vitally important to help right the system when it goes astray, but the strength of these initiatives and the resolve of the people behind them will vary. Strong legislation in various forms, such as campaign finance reform, is needed too, but legislation can be changed. The practical reality is that politicians alone are positioned and empowered to create a new political culture. A culture that practices and honors being a Statesman (or more inclusively speaking, a Statesperson). Many fine people enter politics and run for office to do some good in our world, and some good is certainly done. These people are still function in the system. But over time, and subtly, a political system for survival and advancement too often built on power, money, endorsements by powerful people and political parties, and control by a few, sets the expectations, conformity and mandates for political behavior. The current entrenched system for political survival, reward and advancement needs to change in the direction of political courage, public service and accomplishment.

The time is right for politics to change. The vast majority of opinion polls show that the public has lost confidence in elected officials, and that politicians are not trusted. Voter turnout for elections are at all time lows. People are becoming more disenfranchised and alienated with each passing day. This downfall is monumental in our society, where citizen participation What: Elected officials and the leaders of political parties need to set forth Guiding Principles for Politics is a fundamental value. -- and then live by them. The Principles must be based 219 years ago, in 1796, in his Farewell Address to on public service trumping politics-as-usual. They the Nation, President George Washington warned of need to embrace broader participation, openness, politics and political parties. "They serve to organize encouraging and empowering individuality and the faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to willingness to take political risk (even if that includes put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation, the losing an office or power). Real change calls for burying will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising the traditional political playbook and adopting a new minority of the community; and, according to the culture. One that looks more outwardly toward service, alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the and less inwardly toward self. One that recognizes and public administration the mirror of the ill-concerted rewards elected officials and political party leaders and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the who do their very best to be Statespersons! (I know organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by what it’s like in the heat of a political campaign to common counsels, and modified by mutual interests." use strong rhetoric, but lose some perspective on the Unfortunately, President Washington’s warnings time served and contributions of opponents. Being a describe all too often what we see, hear and read true Statesperson calls for better than that.) today. Change that matters is never quick or easy. But think Politics seems to be failing in so many critical ways of the rewards for government service and people that we need to ask: 1) Why should politics change? 2) when politics is part of the solution rather than Who can bring about that change? and 3) What must an insurmountable problem. And think about the tremendous possibilities when becoming and being a change? Politician is one of the highest callings anyone could Why: Politics is not an island unto itself. LOCAL CELTIC BAND RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL AWARDS Delmar natives Mike DeAngelis, John Haggerty and Scott Apicelli with their new band Get Up Jack just received two distinct awards from Celtic Internet Radio. Stemming from their second CD release, “Get Up Jack – Alive and Well, Volume I”, “The Spanish Lady” won the award for Best Traditional Song. Not long after the band received that news, the group was contacted yet again and told that “Alive and Well, Volume I” had been named the 2015 Celtic Internet Radio Album of the Year. This news came just before the band’s 2016 Tour of Ireland. The band is currently celebrating the release of their brand new CD, “Alive and Well, Volume II”, which was recorded live earlier this year on Saint Patrick’s Day at Revolution Hall in Troy, NY. Slingerlands Elementary School Celebrates 75 Years By Susan E. Leath

As early as 1843 the hamlet of Slingerlands has boasted a one room school, District Number Nine. Teacher Abel B. Wilder kept meticulous records in his elegant handwriting. His list of scholars dated October 5, 1844 has last names familiar in the hamlet including Wands, Schoonmaker, Conning, Couse and, of course, Slingerland. Abel’s accounting of the school’s library in the early 1840s has over 100 entries on a wide variety of topics. Examples include Swift’s Family Robinson, Life Sir Isaac Newton, Geology Elements, Counsels for the Young, Political Economy and Life of Dewitt Clinton. In 1845, Wilder moved on to teach at the one room school in Delmar.

In this rendering of the school proposed in 1941, one can pick out the architectural details that were ultimately incorporated into the exterior of the school. Look for the fan shaped window and the brick work that decorates the corners of the building.

of the children and not enough seating capacity. Enrollment was at 110 pupils with it sometimes necessary to “place three scholars in a seat.” In May, voters in the district approved $9,000 to erect a new school. This building, completed in the late fall of 1909 still stands today at 1500 New Scotland Road. (Quotes are from the April 23, 1909 edition of the Altamont Enterprise.) In 1941 (by then Slingerlands was part of the Bethlehem Central School District) the New Scotland Road school was in its turn deemed insufficient for modern standards and rising enrollment. The new building on Union Avenue was to be of Grade A fire safe construction including brick and concrete cinder block walls. The design called for glazed tile wainscot in the hallways – a feature that is still present today. Irwin Warren Whittemore of Troy was the engineer in charge of design and construction.

Monday November 24, 1941 was to be opening day for the new school. Students arrived to a brand new building that included a combined gymnasium and auditorium that featured a built in stage which became the setting for many years of musical productions performed by 5th grade students. There were six classrooms plus a kindergarten room. Over the years from 1941 to First graders Susie Kleinke, left, and Ann Rodgers, work on their today, Slingerlands has had just five principals: James Smith (1941-1944), Mary Bida (1944arithmetic at the blackboard in April 1955. 1971), Virginia Lows (1971-1977), David Murphy By 1909, the hamlet of Slingerlands was on its (1977 to 2000) and Heidi Bonacquist (2000 to the third school building, a brick and wood frame present.) school that was built about 1882. It was deemed not up to State Education Department standards. Cover - Students work at their desks in their classroom Deficiencies included “not enough cubic feet of at the Slingerlands Grade School. The date on the chalk air space for each child”, light shining in the eyes board is November 1, 1977. 27

This picture shows the circa 1882 schoolhouse that was on New Scotland Road.

A vibrant learning community, Slingerlands Elementary School has continued to grow and serve in keeping with their motto “Always our Best.” Slingerlands Elementary School is hosting a 75th birthday party on the afternoon of Sunday, September 25. They are looking for alumni and former teachers to share their memories of the school. Please visit www.bethlehemschools.org/ slingerlands75 for more information.

The former Slingerlands School on New Scotland Road is seen here circa 1940. After closing, it was converted to apartments.

Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York. The book is

available for sale at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall, I Love Books in Delmar, Tattered Pages in Glenmont, and many other retailers including online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com.

Buses arrive at the school circa 1975.

Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org

THE REVIEWS ARE IN:

Y SUMMER CAMP ROCKS! On the first day back at school from summer vacation, what will your child’s “What I did this summer” essay read like? If the essay describes great field trips, thrilling water park rides, kids summer Olympics, fun games and competitions, spending lots of time outside, swimming, smiles, laughs, making new friends, and lots of exclamation points!!!!! Then your kids must have spent their summer at the Bethlehem YMCA summer camp. This summer the Y had more campers than ever before, which is truly a testament to the great job done by our YMCA staff and counselors who carefully planned and organized our program to maximize fun every week. The Y received many positive comments about summer camp. Here are just a few unsolicited comments and yes, these are real comments from real parents of Bethlehem YMCA summer campers: I have a great granddaughter going to the Bethlehem Y and totally loving it. I think the program is well run and the kids have freedom to choose activities with gentle and caring supervision. Yesterday the whole camp went to the Great Escape for the day and today Emack and Bolios ice cream truck will be there after lunch. Swimming every day, making new friends, plenty of room to run, climb, play ball or do quiet activities, even just sit in the shade and read if you want!! I would like to express my appreciation for the staff at the Bethlehem YMCA. My nephew attended six weeks of Summer Camp and this has been by far the best experience he has ever had. The Counselors, and program director were all so amazing. He made amazing connections with everyone but of course he had two favorites Preston and Nicole. e ent Boutiqu or Consignm A Home Dec g featurin

The Bethlehem YMCA staff are all great from the moment you walk in the building. Everyone is so helpful and courteous. My personal experience has been great. Love the energy and staff. Thank you all for the AMAZING work you all do. Everyone was great; the counselors are amazing with the children. Not one single complaint. We even received a great review from someone who saw Y campers – well behaved and having fun-- at Great Escape: I just wanted to get in touch with whoever runs your day camp program and commend them for what must be an incredible program. We were at Great Escape in Lake George today and saw several groups from your camp. The kids were all well behaved and polite and the counselors all seemed so engaged and fun. Not the typical teenager texting and taking selfies. They were singing and laughing and making sure all the kids had fun. As a mom of two it was a great thing to see. Just wanted to let you know that your counselors are great role models. Thanks! The Bethlehem YMCA staff is already working hard to plan Y summer camp 2017 so it is even better than ever. Our camp is truly the best run, the most fun, the best for the kids, the best for the parents, and the best value of any summer camp program in the Capital Region. So next year, when spring is in the air and end-ofschool is around the corner, please check out and register for the summer camp program at the Bethlehem Y and guarantee your kids their best summer ever!

Dear Constant Readers…. As you read this, September has arrived! As I write this it is just a few days before my yearly vacation, that spiritual, magical, mythical retreat, 400+ miles northeast, Sebec Lake, the home of my husband’s family ancestry! The family traces roots to there in the early 1800s drawn by the lumber industry, the railroad and sustainable farming in the lake regions. My initial visit to the lake was to a wonderful summer home on the Bowerbank side as a newlywed. The camp had a name, “Many Windows” because it’s construction is created from these huge many paned windows from the Foxcroft Academy in town. The windows were laid out horizontally giving the camp the most incredible view & ambience. Built by the parishioners of the “Unitarian Society of Germantown” (Philadelphia) for their beloved pastor Max Daskum & his wife Gladys Dow in the 1960s; just a few miles from the Dow family farm and where my husband’s grandmother taught in a one room schoolhouse. The Dow aunts would tell such great tales of fishing, canoeing, swimming and singing around bonfires on the shore. Camps were rented or borrowed by friends & family. The “dooryard” call was common. You would bring fresh produce or baked goods to a camp or lakehouse… sit on the porch, play cribbage and listen to the song of the loons. The youngest, Aunt Elva Jane, lived near us when my children were young, and we lived outside Philadelphia. She would share tales of childhood in the back woods. One of my favorite tales would be of her accompanying her father for the “lake run”. She would pick berries, flowers and fresh produce and travel with her Dad on the lake from dock to dock selling their wares. She would ring the handbell and people would come down to the shoreline to buy from the boat. Jane often received a penny tip from customers. At the end of a good day, and if the weather was with them, they would travel to the head of the lake to the Packard Camps where the Wilson stream enters, salmon were bountiful, and a lovely café & music hall was situated. Jane would buy a “gelatin dessert” or a shaved ice, which was quite the treat in the 1920s! Sebec is about 11 miles long and 2 miles across in the upper lake. I swam across the lower lake a few years back (if you can call kickboarding with flippers swimming, I do!) about 1 ¼ miles across. After asking if I could approach the beach… the children and adults sitting on the dock agreed. The questions ensued (as my sister in law & niece approached in a dinghy that they rowed across the lake to make sure that I was safe). The children asked me how old was I? Their uncles swim across the lake every year to the town beach, but they’re drunk! I told them I had always wondered if I was strong enough & brave enough to swim across the lake. They all applauded me, we shared stories of the Bowerbank side, family names and more questions of me… and then I turned around and swam back! It took over 2 ½

38

hours total and not one boat came even near my bobbing white head! This year I am heading up with Seamus, my husband, my granddaughter Trinity and will be met by other family members while there. I can’t wait for this adventure to begin and to be in the lake with 3 generations of Eldridges! I am especially excited to have my 3 year old granddaughter, Raven, my little outdoors girl with me in the lake again this year! I will also be bringing books, but I have a feeling that I may not have as much time to read as I usually do, but I am bringing at least 5. Did you know that reading can be a wonderful (and healthy) escape from the stress of everyday life? Simply by opening a book, you allow yourself to be invited into a literary world that distracts you from your daily stressors. Reading can even relax your body by lowering your heart rate, slow your breathing and ease the tension in your muscles. A study at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%. It works better than meditation, drinking a cup of tea, or deep breathing! (I am a strong supporter of drinking tea while reading!) Find something of interest to read…set aside 30 minutes to read every day in a quiet place where you won't be interrupted (if possible) and settle in. The book you choose doesn't have to be on any "best-seller" list. Reading only helps reduce your stress if you pick something you enjoy that won't upset you. Choose a novel where you can escape into another world. Take note of how you feel after your reading break. I can recall most books that I read at the lake. But many were right here in the bookshop (my latest favorite by Frederik Backman, “Britt-Marie was Here” was read with Seamus snuggling next to me on the couch in the shop! As the new school year unfolds, remember that I would love to help your children find just the right book for their school needs. Call me, e-mail me, or contact me on Facebook at Tattered Pages, LLC and I will look for you. Please tell others about my shop and my unique program where you can earn an additional 20% off all books purchased here. For a small business, such as mine, I depend on word of mouth and your support. Taking 2 weeks off was risky but we all need that time to unplug, relax, connect with family and breathe…preferably fresh pine air, with dragonflies in flight overhead and hummingbirds dive bombing! Until next month…stop in…keep reading…spread the word…and thank you! See you in September!!!
