Ask the

Canterbury Vet Have you been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family?

There is no better time than October – it’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

WHY ADOPT? In the US, it’s estimated that 6 to 8 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year. Too many healthy, loving dogs are sitting in shelters waiting to go to their “fur-ever” home. You can make a difference in the lives of these animals. When you are ready to welcome a new dog into the family, consider adopting a shelter dog. Some of the nicest pets come from shelters. I should know: many of my patients were adopted from local shelters, as were my two cats and dog. DEBUNKING THE MYTHS There’s a lot of misinformation out there about dogs in shelters that might prevent someone from going the adoption route. Here are some of the most common myths: MYTH: Shelters only have older dogs, and I want a puppy. FACT: Shelters have pets of all ages. From puppies to seniors you will find dogs in all stages of life. And remember, while puppies are cute, older dogs will likely already be housetrained and easier to handle. MYTH: Shelters only have mixed-breed dogs. FACT: The National Council of Pet Population Study and Policy estimates that 25 percent of dogs in shelters are purebred. If you have a certain breed in mind, search shelters in your area by looking online at adoption websites such as Petfinder. MYTH: If a dog’s been abandoned, there must be something wrong with him. FACT: Dogs are relinquished to shelters for many reasons. Some owners have a change in life circumstances that prevent them from being able to keep a dog. Other owners underestimate the time or financial commitment of owning a pet. Visit your local shelter and you’ll be amazed by the loving, fabulous dogs you’ll find there. MYTH: Shelter staff won’t be able to find me the right dog for my family. FACT: Hard-working shelter staff spend large amounts of time with the animals in their care. They are experienced at finding every potential adopter the perfect dog. Remember, the last thing they want to see is a dog who gets returned to the shelter after being placed. The rewards of adopting a shelter dog and saving the life of a wonderful animal are tremendous. The years of joy your canine companion will give you will make it clear that saving a shelter dog is one of the best decisions you will ever make. CAR CARE TIPS

The “four B ” of fall car care: ’s

Blades, Batteries, Brakes & Belts

Sure it’s not winter yet, but car-care experts advise consumers should use these final fair-weather days to get cars ready for what lies ahead. We suggest attention also be paid to tires, shocks and struts, oil, fluid levels, air filters and headlamps and tail lamps. Regular maintenance is the best preventative for winter breakdowns, but here’s a closer look at the areas experts call out for extra attention: •BLADES – If you’ve ever tried to scrape frost from your windshield by dousing it with washer fluid and running the wipers excessively, you know worn wipers can’t clear your view. Driving through a snowstorm with frosty buildup eroding your visibility is a horrible feeling. Avoid it by replacing your wiper blades before the weather becomes nasty. •BATTERY – Mopar advises the extreme heat of the summer months can reduce battery life, resulting in batteries that then fail in high-demand winter months. AC Delco tells consumers to watch for corrosion on cables and posts and seek help from a professional if these contact points require cleaning. •BRAKES – Before winter has you sliding your way through intersections, have your brakes checked and replace the pads as needed. •BELTS and hoses – These will leave you stranded if they snap or leak. Look for thinning or cracking in belts and check all hoses for imperfections, too. •Tires – Changing temperatures can alter tire pressure. Make sure all tires are filled to their recommended tire pressure. Also check for tread wear. •Shocks and Struts – Mopar says shocks and struts are the most overlooked parts on a car but argue that this should not be the case. Shocks and struts do improve vehicle handling, extend tire life and improve ride control a for the driver. •Oil and other fluids – Top off all fluids that have run low. Windshield washer fluid is used frequently in winter driving, so keep a gallon in your trunk to ensure you will always have a clear view of the road. Check the oil, and change it if the time is right. 14

•Air filters – Mopar includes these on their fall inspection list. A dirty air filter is not generally going to cause your car to break down, but have it inspected too. •Headlamps and tail lamps – So you’ve completed a complete prewinter inspection of your car, but the guy behind you probably didn’t. Check your lights to make sure you are as visible as possible to other drivers. This may seem like a lot, but many items on this list can be handled quickly and easily. Once your car is prepared, you will be a more confident driver. Too bad there isn’t a list on how to prepare ourselves for winter’s wretched wickedness.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ It’s National

Save for Retirement Week – So Take Action

Congress has dedicated the third week of October as National Save for Retirement Week. Clearly, the government feels the need to urge people to do a better job of preparing for retirement. Are you doing all you can? Many of your peers aren’t – or at least they think they aren’t. In a recent survey conducted by Bankrate.com, respondents reported that “not saving for retirement early enough” was their biggest financial regret. Other evidence seems to show they have good cause for remorse: 52% of households 55 and older haven’t saved anything for retirement, according to a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, although half of this group reported having a pension. Obviously, you’ll want to avoid having either financial regrets or major shortfalls in your retirement savings. And that means you may need to consider making moves such as these:

Take advantage of all your opportunities. You may well have access to more than one tax-advantaged retirement plan. Your employer may offer a 401(k) or similar plan, and even if you participate in your employer’s plan, you are probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA. You may not be able to afford to “max out” on both plans, but try to contribute as much as you can afford. At the very least, put in enough to your employer’s plan to earn a matching contribution, if one is offered, and boost your annual contributions every year in which your salary goes up.

with Jerry Pittz

Create an appropriate investment mix. It’s not enough just to invest regularly through your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement plan – you also need to invest wisely. You can fund your IRA with virtually any investments you choose, while your 401(k) or similar plan likely offers an array of investment accounts. So, between your IRA and 401(k), you can create portfolios that reflect your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. It’s especially important that your investment mix offers sufficient growth potential to help you make progress toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

A

Don’t “raid” your retirement accounts early. If you start withdrawing from your traditional IRA before you turn 59½, you may have to pay a 10% tax penalty in addition to normal income taxes due. (If you have a Roth IRA and start taking withdrawals before you are 59½, the earnings will be taxed and may be subject to a 10% penalty – but contributions can be withdrawn without any tax and penalty consequences.) As for your 401(k) or similar plan, you may be able to take out a loan, but you’ll have to pay yourself back to avoid any tax or penalty consequences. (Also, not all plans offer a loan option.) More importantly, any money you take out early is money that no longer has a chance to grow to help you meet your goals. Try to do everything you can, then, to keep your retirement plans intact until you actually do retire. One suggestion: Build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid, low-risk vehicle outside your IRA or 401(k). National Save for Retirement Week reminds us that we all must act to help ourselves retire comfortably. By making the moves described above, you can do your part.

Heating and Cooling Systems - Digital Thermostats - Humidifiers - Air Cleaners - Hot Water Heaters - Tankless Hot Water Heaters

10 Tips for the Thermostat: Your Key to Savings Thermostats, where they are located in your home, and how you set them can be the most important factor in determining the size of your fuel bill. 1. When you’ll be out for an evening, turn down the thermostats. If you’ll be away for a weekend or more, lower the thermostats to 55 F. You’ll save on heating without risking a freeze-up of your water pipes. 2. Whenever you can lower your thermostat dramatically for a few days or more, you’ll save a little on the operation of the refrigerator and freezer, which won’t need to work so hard to maintain their cool. 3. How low can your thermostats be set? At our house, we’ve gotten accustomed to 68 F as a comfortable norm. Reduce the heat just 1 degree at a time and try it for a week. Each 1-degree drop for an eight-hour period reduces your fuel bill about one percent. Gradually, you might be able to go down 3 or even 4 degrees comfortably and save a chunk of money. 4. Try turning down the thermostat 5 to 10 degrees at night, and then turn it up again in the morning when the coffee is brewing. If you can get used to that, you’ll save 5 to 10 percent of your heating bill. Once common myth is that when you reduce the thermostat for only a few hours it will take more heat to bring your home back up to the desired temperature. This is not so. You will save money and fuel because your heating system will not have to keep your home so warm. You will use less energy overall even when you warm up your house from a cooler temperature. 5. For greater ease and comfort, install a programmable set-back thermostat. They are available for most gasand oil-fueled central heating systems. In this way, you can have the heat turned up before you get up in the morning and lowered just as you get into bed. You may not even notice that you are setting back your thermostat. Most of these thermostats come with two setbacks. Therefore, you can also set back the thermostat for the 24 hours when people are in school or at work.

6. Some setback thermostats have different setbacks for weekends. If you frequently forget to setback your thermostat, the programmable setback thermostats will be a great investment. Even if you are already pretty good at remembering, these devices can frequently enable you to set back the thermostat a few extra degrees, providing you with additional savings. 7. If you heat with electricity, you can take advantage of the individual room thermostats that make it possible to shut off unused rooms and to have cool settings in some rooms and warmer settings in others. Using this feature of electric heat will definitely reduce your fuel bills. If you have a thermostat that controls a relatively large area, you should still consider a setback thermostat. You will need an electrician for this installation. 8. Do you need to talk yourself into a lower thermostat setting? Here’s an argument. Your plants are healthier in the cooler air. The health of your plants isn’t in the same league with your personal comfort? All right, you’ll be healthier in the cooler air. Your body will burn a few more calories keeping you warm, thereby helping you to lose weight and improve your general health. Besides, if you’ve already insulated and tightened your home, you will probably be just as comfortable at lower temperatures. 9. When it’s time to open the windows for a little fresh air in the spring, remember to turn down the thermostats. Those cool breezes that feel so good will send your furnace on a fuel-burning rampage unless the thermostats are reset. 10. Planning a party? Turn the thermostats down. Each guest is the equivalent of a 175-watt heater, and a large group will warm up the place without the furnace or the heating units in operation.

Elm Estates and the Garrett Van Allen Farm By Susan E. Leath

Bethlehem’s many subdivisions can usually trace their origins back to someone’s farmstead. This article looks at Elm Estates, known as Skycrest at the time it was developed in the 1970s. The land is the former farm of Garrett and Ellen Van Allen. The Van Allen family is one with a long history in Bethlehem that can be traced back at least to 1717 when William Van Allen was listed as an owner of a farm in Bethlehem. Today we know that farm as the Nicoll-Sill House on Dinmore Road in Cedar Hill. William’s life was centered in Albany. He married Maria Van Patten 1695 and their eight children were baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church there between 1695 and 1709. Remember at this time, what was to become the town of Bethlehem was a sparsely settled area, practically still wilderness. Another early reference to the Van Allen family in Bethlehem is found on the 1767 Bleeker map of the Manor of Rensselaerwick. Gerritt Van Allen is listed as #118 on the map. The Van Allen family name turns up often in old Bethlehem records including a reference to a road through the lands of William Van Allen in 1796 and the marriage of John Haswell to Maria Van Allen in 1823. Two entries are found in the Record of Slaves for Van Allen’s. On November 12, 1820 Garret A. Van Allen manumitted and set free his slave Tom and on May 4, 1824 John Van Allen did the same for Mink. Brothers Jacob and Charles Van Allen both died while serving the United States during the Civil War. Jacob died of typhoid fever at Camp Reno in 1862; Charles at the notorious Andersonville prison in 1864. Garrett Van Allen and Ellen Becker Van Allen came into their Elm Avenue farm as early as 1854. That’s when a deed was recorded between Van Allen and Stephen and Harriett Van Rensselaer covering two parcels. One was originally part of an indenture made in 1814 between Stephen Van Rensselaer and John Van Allen containing 51 acres and another first described in an indenture between Van Rensselaer and Samuel Elmendorf dated 1805 which contained 64 acres. 26

Ronald Van Allen, shown as a boy in this photo, remembers when his father took down the front porch on the family’s

Garrett and Ellen had three sons that we know of. Two died tragically young and were buried in the family plot on the farm: John at age 19 in 1866 and Garrit G. in 1859 at age 18. Their son, James Van Allen and his wife Margaret Creble raised three children on the Elm Avenue property: Frank, Nellie and James. James married Dora Hallenbeck and they in turn continued the family farm and life in the

Houck’s Corners area. The Altamont Enterprise often noted their doings with reports like this one from October 12, 1894 when Mrs. James Van Allen “entertained a few ladies to a five o’clock tea” and another dated January 25, 1885 (when “harvesting ice was the order of the day”) which reported that “Mrs. Ezra Hallenbeck of Athens was visiting her daughter Mrs. James Van Allen.” Cover - The Van Allen farm house and barns are seen here about 1947.

Now known as Elm Estates, the development continues to be a vibrant community and your town historian has been pleased to call it her home since 1995.

The water tank on Elm Avenue is seen here from Peel Street in August 1979.

The farm remained in the Van Allen family until it was sold to Alfred and Rose Williams in 1946. According to their son Ronald, Alfred and Rose tried their hand at farming the property including dairy farming and an orchard. Alfred also worked driving a delivery truck for the Tobin Packing Company. The Williams sold the 70-acre property to developers in 1969 for $80,000. Shortly after the sale, Skycrest Construction Co. initiated a change in the zoning of the former Van Allen farm to a planned residential development which was granted in 1970. In 1972 new owners Joseph Kalichman and Izak Giwerc presented plans for a subdivision called Skycrest. Approval of Section No. 1 of the project was finalized in March 1975. It had 67 single-family dwellings and included Fairlawn Drive, Peel Street, University Street, Sherbrook Drive and Rigi Court. The fact that Giwerc lived on University Avenue, in Bronx, N.Y. probably contributed to the use of the University Street name. Kalichman lived on Marsdale Street in Albany and a later section of the Elm Avenue development included Marsdale Court. Bronco Development, Ltd. developed the property in sections with work on single family homes ending in the early 1980s. Development of the townhouses, Skycrest sections 5 and 6, began in the early 1980s.

Y SPOOKY SKATE OFFERS HELP AND FUN Do you suffer from cryophobia? Four in 10 people have this affliction.* Maybe it’s time to seek professional help at the Bethlehem YMCA. In fact, the Bethlehem Y is one of only four YMCA’s in the country that offers treatment for cryophobia in the form of our Spooky Skate on Saturday, October 29th from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Kids can wear their costumes to the Y ice rink and enjoy skating, treats, music and more at our popular, annual Halloween extravaganza on ice, and, in the process, overcome any fear of frozen objects. (* indicates that I made up that statistic). YMCA MISSION OUTREACH: OPERATION SANDWICH The YMCA’s Togetherhood Committee is the very embodiment of the Y’s mission to build a stronger community through unique outreach efforts. Last month, the committee, along with Bethlehem YMCA summer campers and Participation in Government volunteers from Bethlehem High School, worked together to assembly 600 sandwiches and 300 bagged lunches that were delivered to the Capital City Mission in Albany. The Mission provides more than 250,000 meals to the hungry and needy each year. The lunches were made from sandwich and snack supplies donated by Bethlehem YMCA members. The lunches were handed out to men, women and children who access the Capital City Mission for their meals. Thank you to the Y’s Shawn St. James who oversees the Togetherhood Committee program, to everyone who made donations, and to all the young people who participated in this tremendous effort to reach out beyond the walls of the YMCA to help people in need in our area.

an Olympic gold medal winning basketball player. The YMCA has the opportunity to join our travel basketball league and play against teams from other Ys in the Capital District. There are 10 regular season games plus playoffs, all on Saturdays with practices beginning in November. Volunteer coaches are needed. Please contact Rusty Decker at the Bethlehem Y for more information. YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT YMCA Youth in Government is a national program of the Y that involves thousands of high school students nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. Teens will meet once a week in their local groups throughout the year to discuss and debate issues that affect citizens of New York State and to propose legislation. Participants conduct extensive research on their issue and write a document based on their findings. Local attorneys and government officials are consulted during this process. After the documents have been presented at the District conference, they are sent to the New York State Youth & Government Model Legislative Program. Each spring, participants travel to Albany to implement the Youth in Government program events in the State Capitol, the Legislative Office Building and the Judicial Building. For more information about joining the Y’s Youth in Government program, contact Rusty Decker at rdecker@cdymca.org.

Y BACKPACK DONATIONS HELP KIDS GET READY FOR SCHOOL The Bethlehem YMCA helped more than 80 children from low-income families start the school year right by providing them with new back packs and school supplies. It’s an annual event that does so much to lift their spirits and get them set for learning and it was made possible by YMCA staff and volunteers, including people from the Bethlehem Town Hall Senior Services. The Y also received tremendous support from Cap Com Federal Credit Union. Thanks to everyone involved for their efforts. SAVE MONEY WITH THE YMCA 20/20 REFERRAL With fall upon us, many people are moving their workouts inside to the Bethlehem Y. And now Y members have a new way to save. The Capital District YMCA is offering an extra special value for our members – our 20/20 referral program. When you refer a friend who joins the Y, you and your friend save 20 percent on your memberships for as long as you are both members. Working out with a friend has many benefits – motivation, competition, accountability, more fun and better results, to name just a few. So now you can bring a friend to the Bethlehem Y, get them signed up and both can save money. YMCA TRAVEL BASKETBALL You have to start playing early if you want to be

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Readers, In my last article, I had prefaced that I would be heading to God’s country…my personal retreat, Lake Sebec, Maine, where Eldridges have resided since early 1800s. We brought our 9 year old granddaughter Trinity, who many have met here at Tattered Pages over the last 10 years, with us. She had asked, “What will we do every day up at the lake?” My response, “I don’t know. But it will be the most incredible time of your life!” I told her that we can never know what the day will bring until we see the day. She thought I was saying that to cover that I was going to do schoolwork with her in preparation of Fifth grade! Yes, I was a 5th grade teacher most of my teaching career, and I was going to cleverly work “my magic” while there, but notice I said cleverly! After a few days there, of perfect weather we had: early morning hikes where we studied the eco-system with its mushrooms, moss, low lying shade based plant life, babbling brook and muddied paths with deer prints; long swims (where she didn’t need any floating device to assist her) where we discovered where the creek enters the lake, watched loons fish, witnessed 24 ducks having territory battles and watched a mother bald eagle teach her eaglet how to fish! We studied 6” copper colored dragonflies that landed on my visor, darning needles in their brilliant cobalt blue brilliance, skimmers darting near the shady shoreline, and sunnies coming up to our toes! We found our cove on the map, calculated the distances of our swims and learned how to find just the right stones for skipping. She managed 5 skips on a very placid day. The lake presented placid, clear, calm days and rough days with waves similar to the ocean surf! We collected stones and then separated them into groups. Trinity made the hummingbird water and then discovered that bees like the nectar as well. We used our Audobon book to discover info about each lake bird that we encountered. We read directions in cookbooks and created cupcakes, pancakes, waffles and soup from scratch. We colored and drew. We played waitress, where she created the menus, tallied the bills and made change. A big part of my lake experience is the time available to read, and I was concerned that I wouldn’t have the time to read the books that I brought. I didn’t. But, I had one of the best reading experiences ever! Trinity looked at the dustjacket of the book that I had just started, “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” by sci-fi/fantasy writer Neil Gaiman. “Nana, that book jacket looks intriguing, could you read it out loud to me?” Although it is an adult/young adult book, I said that I would love to, I could resurrect my 5th grade teacher dramatic reading voice! This book involves the memories of our narrator back to an influential time when he was 7 and lived in rural England. He recalls his encounters with an 11 year old girl, her mother and Granny. They own a farm with a mystical duck pond and a mystery as old as time! Being that we were on a lake under a star filled night sky where the Northern Lights danced purple & green after sunset, the imagery of this story came alive! I loved when my granddaughter would shout, “Stop! Put the bookmark in and don’t read ahead…I have to go!” We 38

would take book breaks to swim and discuss the chapters. Even my husband would jump into our discussions…this reading experience is one I hadn’t anticipated and all of will cherish forever! We didn’t want the book to end…and her final words on the book were, “Nana, this would make a great movie!” Similar to “A Wrinkle in Time” or “The Never Ending Story” it is certainly a book that has appeal for all ages! I have sold several copies to people since I shared my love of the book, and they have loved it as well! The very adult book that I read after that one was Ursula Hegi’s 1997 book, “Stones from the River”. I have intentionally avoided this book because (and I was so wrong) I thought that the material would be too grim, sad & unpleasant! It is the story of Trudy, a young dwarf born during the beginning of Hitler’s regime in a small town in Germany, across the river from Dusseldorf. It is through the life, involvement & eyes of Trudy that we experience the life of citizens during this tragic time in Germany. We not only get Trudy’s perspective of those historic events, but the life of a young, highly intelligent girl who is dealing daily with living her life as someone outside the “norm”, especially the Aryan perception of a good German. I cannot adequately put into words how much I loved this story! Perhaps the water element of the lake created a bond with me to the importance of the river in this story. Also, Trudy and her father own a pay-library, and their role in the lives of the villagers with their books connected to me very deeply. If you have not read this book, I do have copies at Tattered Pages! I also strongly recommend this wonderful book, 2013s “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” by Rachel Joyce, which was recommended to me by my friend Helen. (Oprah called it : A gorgeously poignant novel of hope and transformation!) Similar in tone to “A Man Called Ove”, it involves a recent retired Harold Fry who receives a letter from a friend whom he hasn’t seen in 20 years. She shares tragic news and Harold sets out to walk to her in response. The thing is, she lives on the Scottish border of England and he lives in the south of England! He is ill prepared for such an endeavor of over 600 miles in his yachting shoes…but each step confirms that it is the journey, not the destination that is important. His life’s reflection is unveiled and we are with him every step of the way! As many of my loyal customers know, Tattered Pages will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary in October. It was in 2006 that the shop opened its doors as Tea & Tattered Pages. 3 owners later, the shop still offers a great selection, service and value! Great place to Holiday shop…and the crafting/cookbooks for Christmas will be coming out on the shelves soon. For October specials… check out our Facebook page at Tattered Pages, LLC or our website at www.tatteredpages365.webs.com. Please, spread the word about us! For those who have trade credits, don’t forget you receive an additional 20% off of our already reduced prices! Most of the books are in gift giving quality! Seamus & I look forward to seeing you in the shop soon! Happy Reading… Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages New & Used Books in the Glenmont Center Square, 365 Feura Bush Rd. #518-447-9910, Open M,T,W 10-5, Th. 10-6, Fri. 10-7 Sat. 10-2

Capitol Hauntings Does the night watchman who died in the Capitol fire of 1911 still make his rounds? Which two United States Presidents visited the Capitol after they died?
